Word header text mysteriously changing

Q: Word header text mysteriously changing

(We use Word 2003 SP2. All files live on a shared server that we access through our WinXP laptops and company network.)

To facilitate speedy document creation we created a template called Lab_Modules.dot. At the top-right corner of that template's header is the italicized place-holder text Exercise Name, which we manually change to match the title of each document we create with that template. We have created dozens of two-to-five-page files with this template, and on each page of every file we have carefully replaced the dummy header text Exercise Name with that file's actual title.

After we Insert as Link several of these files to create our finished lab document, we notice that the headers in a few (but never all) of the sub-documents we inserted as link have lost their title name and that the dummy text Exercise Name has mysteriously returned. Because we have dozens of these short sub-files, and we typically string together ten to fifteen of them (using Insert as Link) to create our library of finished lab documents, we are puzzled by the seeming randomness of this behavior - it does not appear to be restricted to a select few sub-files. Can you tell us how/why our dummy header text is returning and how we might fix the problem?

Thank you for your valuable time,
Curtis

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am not quite sure why it would be happening.. Have you tried making a master document with subdocuments instead? You can create or link to subdocuments in the "Outline" view using the "Insert Subdocument" button. Try that out and see if it is still having a bug.

I'm working with a file in which somebody created headers that are the same width as the text (the whole page width minus some margins).

On the right side of the header, there's a Rev number and date of that page. But the person who designed this apparently didn't realize that the header is duplicated on all pages (or else didn't care). The Rev number really wants to go with that page so that different pages can have different revs. Duh! Yes, I know about Track Changes, but this needs government approval from an org that doesn't understand electronic manuals. They want paper so we use paper.

So my idea is to move the right boundary of the header to the left and keep the page number in the header, and then put the revision code (and date) to the right of the right boundary of the header box so it's not part of the header. And yes, I know about the problem of flowing text if we insert or delete a paragraph so the text expands or contracts; that's another problem.

But when I double-click on the header to get into edit-header mode, it won't let me go into the graphics mode to grab the dashed-outline of the right header boundary and move it. How do I change the header size, and do you have any better idea for being able to make a per-page 'header' of per-page editable text next to the real header?

Also, there's a fat horizontal line (same width as the header box) at the bottom of the header that I can move up and down, but... Read more

A work friend has just told me she has a 34 page document and needs to change the text in the headers in three different "chunks" throughout the document. So, eg., the first 10 pages would read differently to the next 10 pages etc. in terms of what is typed into the headers.

We tried using section breaks and clicking Same as Previous on the H/F floating toolbar but it did not help.

Help would be appreciated.

Hi,

I work in an office with a small network (1 PDC/File Server, a proxy server, and about 20 workstations). All of my clients store their files on a drive on the server. The problem I'm experiencing is that for some unknown reason, permissions are changing on individual files. Basically, all of the files are set like this:

GROUP: Everyone
ACCESS: Full Control

Now, I've discovered that certain files have changed to:

GROUP: Administrators; System
ACCESS: Full Control

I have not changed any of these permissions myself, and none of the clients here have access to the server. It seems to only have affected Excel files so far. In some cases, I can simply change permissions back to normal, but sometimes, the files become corrupted and I have to restore from a backup.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

P.S- The server OS is WinNT Server 4.0, SP 6a

I made a bootable CD and had some file names that included hyphens. In DOS mode, the hyphens are showing as underscores and long file names are ending with an underscore instead of the usual "~1".

I have never had this happen before and I am having to edit batch files or change file names to get batch files to work. The odd thing is that when this same disk is read in Windows, the file names appear correct (with hyphens and "~1").

Anyone else run into this? This is the first time I have noticed it happening here.

Greetings! I've searched everywhere for the answer to this issue. It must be common, but I can't find it anywhere. I'm using MS Word 2007, but the problem was the same in 2003. I sometimes get a text box that is behind regular text. I need to move it. One normally just selects a text box and drags, or cut and paste, it where one wants. However, when it is behind text, it can't be selected. I have found no way to select normal text and "send it behind."

How do I get to this text box that is behind my regular text? I've been told to "move the regular text out of the way, then you will be able to get to your text box." But the text box moves with text!

Thanks,

7nyerik

I had a Gateway Computer with an El Paso Motherboard, long story short the board died. It had a 1.7 GHz Processor and I bought a 2.6 GHz Processor. The old El Paso had support for old Technology.

I purchased a new Gateway Nimitz 2 Board because it had the support for the processor that I bought and USB 2.0 Front and Back Headers.

The problem is the front header for the power button and such was a 16 Pin Connector on the El Paso Board but its only a 10 Pin Connector on the Nimitz 2 Board.

I know what pins were used in the 16 Pin Connector: 2,4,5,6 and 13. On the 10 Pin Connector it uses 1 & 3 for HD Act., 2 & 4 for the Power LED, 5 & 7 for the Reset Button, and 9 for +5 Volts.

On the El Paso 2 the Pins used are 2 & 4 for HDR_BLNK_GRN and HDR_BLNK_YEL, 5 is GND, 6 is PWR, 13 is GND.

Is there a way to modify the 16 pin connector to work in place of the 10 pin connector.

A:Changing the Layout of a Front Header

Is the 10 pin connector actually 9 pins with one pin missing? If so, it will be a standard Intel pinout. Pins 1 & 3 are HDD LED, pins 5 & 7 are RESET, Pin 9 is EMPTY, on the other side pins 2 & 4 are POWER LED, pins 6 & 8 are POWER SWITCH and pin 10 is missing.

You can just move the wires around to the correct positions and let the extra 2x3 (6 shells) hang off the end of the header, OR buy a 2x5 molex kk connector and repin it, OR cut the 2x8 connector and make it a 2x5 connector.

A:outlook 2003 email shows header only no text in body

Hi pnbs44
Welcome to Tech Support Guy Forums!

Has this issue been solved?

If not, if you double click the header, in Outlook 2003, does Outlook download the body of the message?
If it doesn't check this setting in Outlook 2003:
Tools > Send/Receive > Send/Receive Settings > Define Send/Receive Groups

Click the: Edit button.
On the left side all mail accounts associated with this group will be listed, click each mail account and verify on the right side that the option: Download complete item including attachments is selected.

If that option was already selected, do you have the setting Leave a copy of messages on the server enabled?
In Outlook 2003:
Tools > E-mail Accounts > View or change existing e-mail accounts > Next
Select the first e-mail account and click: Change
Click the: More Settings button
Select the: Advanced tab

Place a check mark in: Leave a copy of messages on the server
I do not have a smartphone, does it have similar options for downloading messages, as in Leave a copy of messages on the server, or downloading the full message or just the headers?
Let us know what you find. If you have already solved this issue, future readers may benefit if you post your solution.

Ok this is wierd I have a client using Office 2007 pro and some of her docs that she recently updated and the problem is when she prints the docs text that she deleted is printing over the top of new text she inserted into the doc.

Now when you have said doc open in WORD the deleted text is not there in any view and does NOT show in "print preview".

I opened said doc with WORDPAD and the deleted text shows up at the bottom so its still in the word doc somewhere imbedded so it prints over the top of the actual text in the doc.

You can use the Document Inspector to find and remove hidden data and personal information in Office documents that were created in Office Word 2007, Office Excel 2007, Office PowerPoint 2007, and earlier versions of these Office programs. It is a good idea to use the Document Inspector before you share an electronic copy of your Office document, such as in an e-mail attachment.

I have created a document in MS Word 2010 that has a textbox with a background color. When I print the document to my printer (have tried multiple printers) or print to PDF, the textbox prints but the text itself does not print. (see attached image)

Upon further investigation of the PDF, I found that the text is actually layered below the textbox. For some reason, Word is printing the textbox on top of the text itself.

When I take the textbox, copy it to a new document, and try to print, it prints correctly.

I have also checked my printing preferences and I believe all the settings are correct.

Does anybody know how to fix this?

Hi There;

OS Windows 7 using MS Word 2003

So, I am on my laptop multi-tasking with books, note pads etc and accidentally hit something on the keypad, which changed the header / view. At this point I closed Word without saving but it did not change the view of the header. Oooops!
Anything could have been accidentally clicked, even more than one key. It could have been one of the F Keys because these keys are never used by me (No idea what they do, lol). The header/footer view went from a white background around the text to a grey background. Usually the view would go to the white background around the text after closing the Header/Footer. Now it stays grey (or gray) all the time.
Couldn't find anything on the Header/Footer toolbar. Went to "Format" drop down menu and opened most options that made sense to open. No Luck. Any advice? Thank You.

It seems that no matter what document I'm working on if I open the Header/Footer toolbar the Insert AutoText button is grayed out with the words No Entries. I checked the AutoText tab and sure enough it's empty. What's the best way to remedy this? I want to add the path and filename to the header in the document. If reinstalling Word will work that's fine. It only takes a few minutes anyway. Let me know what you think.

A:Word 97 header problem...

No reinstall needed. You have not created any autotext entries so it tells you there are none.

To insert date or file name, etc., you must hit Insert-Field, pick the appropriate category (date/time or document information, respectively in this case) and then select the field you want to place in there from the column on the left. Print date is a nice date to pick for letters. Save date is a nice date to pick for manuals that have had revisions, etc.

To create a (sample) autotext entry--and I think you'll see why it's on the header/footer toolbar--type the name and address of your company just as you would if it were a letterhead, you know, bold it, center it, if you like. Then select that text, you can even include a company logo if you like and select it too. Then hit Insert-Autotext-New. You'll see the first few letters of your text in the box. Replace it with some meaningful initials that DO NOT spell a normal word. For instance, if you are Smith Computing Services, you could just type scs in that box for a name. The name should be 3 or 4 letters so you can type the least and so Word has enough letters to recognize it as an autotext entry. Hit ok.

To test it, go down a little further in your doc, and type scs. You'll see one of those little yellow boxes pop up with some text indicating this is your letterhead. Hit enter and everything you'd originally selected, logo and all, will appear. It's a rather cool feature. If you're constantly... Read more

I see there is a way to do something close: Author, Page #, Date, by going to View, Header and Footer, Insert AutoText. But that's not going to cut it.

Is there a way to accomplish what I've been asked to do (Smith / Report / 17)?

What I found was that using Office Button/ Word Options (at the foot) and then Advanced; there is - right at the very end of the advanced options - a section which says "Lay Out this document as if created in.." and I selected Word 2003. This immediately revealed the H&Fs as per Word 2003 and I was able to edit them. Moreover .. when I reverted to viewing as 2007 layout it was still there AND the H&F menu section had appeared on the Insert Ribbon AND it has continued to appear on re-starting Word. So it must have been a "first-time" problem on switching over to 2007.
(But why does it have to be so complicated ???)

Hi All,

I am trying to protect the contents of the header only in MS Word 2003. I have field in there that are written to by a document management system and I want to prevent users editing them!

I have tried different approaches including one from Microsoft entitled specifically for this matter.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888184

My problem is that whichever approach I take using the inbuilt 'Protect Document' I can then only edit the text in the body of the document. I cannot insert tables, text boxes, word art etc.....its all greyed out?

Am I doing something wrong? I just want to protect the header and have normal (full) functionality in the body.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

Regards

Paul

Windows 95, Word 2000, a saved network document - when I type in the header or footer field it puts squares instead of the letter I'm typing. If I try it from a different computer it works fine. The settings for Word on both computers seem to be identical. Any ideas??

A:Word 95: Strange Fonts in Header and Footer

first see if it works while logged on a different user. If it still doesn't work export the registry section hkeylocalmachine\software\microsoft\office from a machine that it works on, then import the reg file on the machine that you are having the problem

I cannot figure out how to set different margins for the header and body of a Word 2007 document. I have tried to highlight the margin, select the margin I want, then select the Apply to Selected Text box, but it doesn't work. I have also tried the same thing with the body of the document but that doesn't work either. Please help!

Thank you

If you add a letterhead logo in the "Header" in Word - is there a way to only print the logo on the first page and have the remaining pages be text only - no headers on the remaining pages

A:Solved: Word - Graphic Letterhead - in Header

I have Word 2003. In the File -> Page Setup ... menu selection, there is a "Layout" tab that has a check box for different first page headers and footers. The built-in help has more information on using that feature.

Not sure about other versions of Word.

I am using word 2010 and windows 10 on a Dell Inspiron 5559. I have reinstalled my printer and it's drivers and I have checked that the text colour is not white.
I am having problems with printing word documents. Within a word document any images print fine, as do the lines in a table but no text will print (in any colour).
I can see the text correctly in the word print preview panel.
Even the print test page prints with no text.

Can you help? Thanks

Hii..

I need to write a macro to display the word entered through the text box. I have a column with a word say "ABC" in the row number 3. First i need to search that column, and i have a word say "No" in the work sheet . So i need to display the text(entered through text box) in the column "ABC" whereever i have the row with text "No".

I have written using the cells and the numbers, but when i dynamically change it to another column, this does not work.

Sub Gen()
TextBox1 = InputBox("Please Enter the text")
If TextBox1 <> "" Then

For j = 4 To ActiveSheet.UsedRange.Rows.Count
If Cells(j, 10) = "No" Then
If IsEmpty(Cells(j, 36).Value) Then
Cells(j, 36).FormulaR1C1 = TextBox1
Cells(j, 36).Select
With Selection
.HorizontalAlignment = xlGeneral
.VerticalAlignment = xlBottom
.WrapText = True
.Orientation = 0
.AddIndent = False
.IndentLevel = 0
.ShrinkToFit = False
.ReadingOrder = xlContext
' .MergeCells = False
End With
End If
End If
Next j
Else
MsgBox ("The value cannot be NULL")
End If
End Sub

I'm still unclear what you are asking for. Is it possible to upload a sample workbook showing exactly what you want the macro to do?

Hello experts, I have a word file that appears to have been corrupted. We were working on it through SharePoint and at some point the style information seems to have been corrupted. When you use the style inspector and click on a location in the text it will say the correct information. For example a level 2 heading will look and appear as a level 2 heading in the text and have the correct style attached. However, when you use the navigation pane or create a table of contents nothing is indented as it should be (level 2 is not subordinate to level 1). I have read that there are table of contents styles in Word but I don't know how to change these. Does anyone know if this would fix the issue?

I tried manually to 'reset' a few styles (highlight text and reclick 'level 2 header' ) which fixed the issue in that instance. However, this is a long document (150 pages) and I wouldn't want to do this for the whole document.

If anyone has some advice it would be greatly appreciated,

A:Word 2010 Document Corrupt Header/TOC information

Couple things you do, first apply guide below and second make use https://www.repairtoolbox.com/wordrepair.html Word Repair Toolbox

Moreover you read next interesting threads about ms word-

The first thing you must do is copy the file from the stick to the HD. Don't make matters worse by trying to work with it from the stick. There's a possibility the document is already corrupted, but the problem you describe may not really be document corruption. It may be just an annoying little glitch occasionally seen in older versions of Word, whereby letters in a line get compacted in printing:
The conventional solution is this:
In the Print dialog, switch to another printer and then back, or close Word and delete the files you find by searching for
     ~$*.*;*.tmp
Then restart Word.
If that doesn't help, then, since this is Word 2003, there are a couple of other things you can try:
In Word's Open dialog, select the file, click the arrow beside Open, and choose Open and Repair.
If that doesn't help, then change the "Files of type" setting to "Recover Text from Any File." You'll get a file with a lot of "garbage" at the beginning and end and just plain text in between, but, since I'm guessing there's not a whole lot of formatting involved in this document, just reco...
