Edge won't open after windows update

Q: Edge won't open after windows update

Hi
Since my windows updated automatically I haven't been able to open microsoft edge. The "e" flashes up and then it closes.
I have tried deleting the updates and a couple of things I found on google - scanning and removing the group profile but to no avail.
As removing the update didn't work I have reinstalled the update.
I am using windows 10 pro, build number 15063

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Ian

Preferred Solution: Edge won't open after windows update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Edge won't open after windows update

Concerning Windows 10, I don't like or use its built-in Microsoft Edge, so I use its built-in Internet Explorer 11.

I'm currently using Windows 10 Pro "Creators Update" Version 1703 Build 15063.540 64-bit, but since I don't use Microsoft Edge, I'm not aware of any issues with it.

"Fall Creators Update" Version 1709 Build 162xx is due to be released next month, so that may resolve your browser issues.

Since an automatic Windows 10 update, over which I had no control, Microsoft Edge is not working - as described by others in this forum.

All my bookmarks and history have been wiped and I'm unable to perform web searches other than through Chrome, which I haven't used in the past so have no history, or through web addresses contained in emails - which is how I managed to log into my Tech Support Guy account.

I feel this is totally unethical as not only am I being forced to use Chrome, which is not my choice, I have lost a great deal of information, links and web addresses that are of great importance to me.

At no time before, after or during the process was I warned that I would lose this facility and all the history that went with it.

I am beyond words and would appreciate some advice.
Thanks - to anyone - in advance.

My Lenovo Edge 2 appears to have done a Windows 10 update yesterday and now has issues with the wireless adapter.   I was working fine the day before and yesterday morning. I started the laptop up in the evening yesterday and was greeted with full-screen messages indicating that Microsoft was setting things up for me and all my documents would be available in their proper locations.   I'm used to these screens from upgrading other computers from windows 8 to windows 10, however, this Edge 2 came with Windows 10. When I was finally logged in, my laptop had no internet connection from the wifi adapter.  In fact, the device manager shows an error with the Intel wireless adapater.   I downloaded the drivers from Intel and installed them ("Repair" in this case) and things seemed to work for a short time (~1-2 minutes).  Then the wifi disconnected and the adapter dissapeared in the networking section of device manager with an unknown device listed.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers a couple of times, sometimes with the 1-2 minutes of wireless connectivity, othertimes with no improvement. I do have other wireless laptops connected to the wireless router during all of this, so I'm sure it is a laptop issue. Does anyone have any ideas on what to try next to get my wireless working again? Thanks Edit:  My laptop is a Lenovo Edge 2-1580 80QF

A:Edge 2 wifi issues after Dec 10 Windows 10 update

I would probably try using System Restore to restore the restore point that should have been made automatically during the Windows Update that started the problem.  (See link below) If that resolves the problem, look for, and install, any updated WiFi Adapter driver from Lenovo (preferred) or Intel before allowing Windows to update again to make sure it works.      I would also run checkdisk on the system before updating again too. (see below) If you cannot restore from a restore point, locate the WiFi Adapter in device manager and delete it;  and when prompted, delete the existing driver files and reboot.    When prompted for drivers when Windows detects the WiFi adapter, point to the latest driver you downloaded from Lenovo. Best of Luck. Recovery options in Windows 10http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/windows-10-recovery-options  How to run CheckDiskRight Click on Start MenuSelect Administrator Command PromptType Chkdsk /FType Y to check on next restart when prompted  C:\WINDOWS\system32>chkdsk /fThe type of the file system is NTFS.Cannot lock current drive.Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by anotherprocess. One of the updates today set MS Edge as the default app for PDF files. I have Acrobat installed and after the update and reboot, Acrobat asked if if I wanted it to be the default program. I didn't realize it had changed. So when I said yes, I got an error that said Acrobat cannot be set as the default app, or something along those lines.

When I went into settings to try to change it there, Edge was shown as the PDF default app. When I tried to change it, Acrobat was listed but it wouldn't change when I clicked on it in the list.

Finally, I went into the Set Default Programs in Control Panel and I set Acrobat as default to open all file types it can open by default. Hopefully that is the correct choice.

If there is some other way to do this, please advise. But maybe this will also help someone else who had this happen.

When I first got Win 10, the Edge browser worked great but after a time it simply quit working. The opening screen with the icon comes up but then it goes back to my desktop. It isn't a critical problem yet because I can still use Explorer but Edge had some features I liked and I would like to go back to it before too long. I have seen some comments here about proxy servers and the like but I am not brave enough to tinker with that. Any sugestions?

A:Edge won't open.

I had this happen. The only I could get it to work again was deleting the Edge favorites folder and letting it create it again. My Edge favorites were located in:

I don't know why but the s keeps getting separating from favorite. I tried to edit it but it keeps doing it.

Sometime over the past couple of days I have lost the ability to download any files when browsing with Edge and I cannot open PDF files from within Edge either.

A:How to add MS Edge to Open With menu in Win10?

Edge should be pinned to the task bar upon delivery of the OS to your machine.but as in many cases it can be easily moved, without realising.

try going into Start menu/screen, find Microsoft Edge icon, right-click, select "Pin to Taskbar," and done. Edge should be pinned back at the end of the taskbar.

other ways may help, too:
Don't click on the Microsoft edge icon on the start list. Go to the list of programs (all app.) after you click on the start button and search for the Microsoft edge program (or app) and then right click it. You will see "pin to taskbar" there.

Does anyone find Edge on rare occasions does not open? I have it pinned to the taskbar and on very, very rare instances nothing opens. It's a very easy remedy, either reboot or quicker still if I go into taskmanager and kill the edge process. Then if I click on the pinned taskbar for edge it opens just fine and happy browsing.

I must re-iterate replicating the issue is tough because it is quite rare. Happened yesterday and before that a couple weeks ago. So I'm thinking it's just an 'Edge' thing that happens from time to time.

The first question I could ask here would be when the laptop was bought but still end up being available after 10's launch but not after the Threshold 2 Update released in November! So you likely have the OEM version for the 10240RTM build there and can try a few things before considering a refresh!

Since Edge is still a work in progress but only lately has been seeing some much needed corrections in the latest Windows Insider Preview builds you have the option to go that route to see the 10240 replaced by way of the Windows Updates into the latest build. With the Threshold 2 being buggy on me I went for the 14271 just now being replaced by the 14279 build. The first things to try would be the System File Checker "sfc /scannow" command entered at the Command prompt(admin) option you get to with a fast right click on the Start button and simply scroll down to.

After that tool runs for a good period of time allowing you to take a break for coffee or tea it will report whether or not any system files were fixed or not able to be fixed where previously with past versions the recommendation of having the Windows disk in the drive while running the tool was made since the tool would then be able to extract the replacement files needed..

The other tool available will run while Windows isn't running and while you can run a fast Disk Check by bringing up the properties screen on the C drive in particular to open the Tools tab and click on the Check button under Error chec... Read more

I came to this website as i'm having a issue with malwares.

Earlier this morning, i started to have problems when using Microsoft Edge, the browser keep open another unknown links when i click.

So i searched online and then installed Malwarebytes, the ran the update and the scan, the scan detected some problems so I removed it, then i restarted my computer.

I thought the stuff in the quarantine are not good for my computer so for some reason i deleted the files in the quarantine too!

After that i opened MS Edge to check and now it can't even open! It just close immediately after the window pops up.

Now i have no idea what to do, i haven't done anything to my computer since then. Please help

Oh and i also had a problem started to have when i tried to open the mail app in my windows 10. The app can't sync with my gmail account. When i tried to sync it says the error is: 0x80040154
I found this error when i tried to activate my account to get to this forum, so i don't know if the error occurs after or before i ran the scan with malwarebytes.

Thank you

All other settings are at the default recommended, I've also imported the default Popular Software.xml profile. (Edge is not shown under the apps Window, so it's likely an issue with the one of the main EMET settings which apply to the system)

Folks,

Using Edge, if I click the "+", open a new tab, then drag that tab out to start a new browser window everything seems fine.

I can open more and more tabs on that "daughter" window. If I then choose "close all tabs", they all go away...but the edge browser window stays open. Clicking the "X" in the upper right does nothing, as does the right-click on the task-bar. The "mother" window still works. It's the "daughter" window, devoid of any tabs, which is unresponsive.

I need to ctl-alt-del and close BOTH (all) edge browser windows (totally shut down edge) to make the blank edge window disappear.

This is repeatable.

(By "blank", see the image, attached.)

Windows 10 Microsoft Edge opens in Bing.
I would like it to open EVERY TIME using Google.

I went to More Options, Open With, A Specific Page Of Pages shows Custom with Google below that.
I then went to More Options, Settings, Advanced Settings, Search In The Address Bar changed to Google.

Edge still opens in Bing.com

A:Force Microsoft EDGE to open in GOOGLE NOT Bing.

Hello John,

The tutorial below can help show you how to set the startup page for Microsoft Edge to be "a specific page or pages" with a custom google.com.

I've been using Edge for awhile now (on Windows 10), and noticed that when I click a hyperlink that links to a .jpg format, Edge opens a blank tab, instead of opening the tab the picture embedded. It then immediately closes the new tab.

For example, on this site: http://www.paslc.org/RECard/#/propCard/58166

Left clicking on the photo results in an empty new tab that closes immediately; right clicking on the photo and "open in new tab" does the same but tries to download the picture to my computer. In previous versions of Internet Explorer clicking on those links would simply open a tab (or a new window) with a preview of the picture.

Does anyone know if this is even a feature in MS Edge, and if so how can I enable it?

I have had good results with MS Edge browser until MS update of 4-7-17. Since then, Edge has been slow as molasses. Now all I can get when I click on Edge is the main page. I can click on a story but cannot go back.  I cannot type a website I want
to go to pay bills, browse, etc.  Edge will not close unless I open Task Manager and shut it down that way.  Really frustrating.  I have a Lenovo Z50 laptop computer, 8 GB RAM, 64 but OS, x64-processor, 906 GB storage

When I try to browse with Microsoft Edge it opens initially but after a short time it closes without any error message. I tried a number of fixes I found on the Internet but I was not able to get Edge to work (but Chrome works fine). In desperation I downloaded an ISO image of Windows 10 and installed it on a flash drive. I then went through the process of doing a repair install, selecting the option to retain my data and applications. Everything appeared to work okay except the reboot did not go through the long update process that I was expecting. And Edge still did not work.

I checked that I had the latest version of Windows 10 (see attachment Windows - About) and it showed 1703 and checked the Windows Update history (see attachment Windows - Update History). This showed that a reboot was needed to install 1709 which is odd because I had already done a reboot. I tried again to do a reboot but got the same result.

Can anyone let me know what is happening and why I cannot install 1709 and fix the Edge problem?

The "fixes" don't work. You have to create a new profile, transfer your personal stuff and reinstall apps.

I've upgraded to the Anniversary version 1607 Build 14393.51 and nothing will shut Edge down other than stopping the task in Task Manager. Has anyone else come across this? I can at least minimise it.

A:Edge won't shut down after Anniversary update

Do you have the live tile on the start menu?
Try turning it off, or unpin it all together.

Hi all,

I've not been able to find a permanent fix for this so thought I'd join up and post on here....

MS Edge (used rarely!!) has stopped working since the November update has been installed. Oddly it works if I point it directly to a proxy (we use a bluecoat appliance at work) but if I don't, the packets don't even hit our site FWs. If I stop the windows FW service then it works perfectly and the packets(requests) are sent directly to our site FWs as expected and I can see it all on the FW tracker.

IE and chrome are not effected and work fine either way.

Has anyone else come across this? We're not deploying windows 10 right now so it's not causing a major problem, I'm just interested to see if anyone has been able to resolve the problem or has an idea as to what could be the issue. Obviously leaving the windows FW service stopped and disabled is not favourable for when clients are not on the LAN.

Thanks.

Damo.

A:MS Edge not working after November Update

I guess you have already checked that Microsoft Edge is ticked in the allowed apps for Windows Firewall but that would be my first thought.

I installed an update today which says in Microsoft's notes about it that it patches Edge among other things. Yet, the version displayed in Settings in Edge is the same as it was before this install. Is it supposed to stay the same?

A:version of Edge does not change after update

Yes I would think so because it was only patched not upgraded.
The upgrade will most likely come with Redstone

I keep getting messages in Edge telling me that Flash Player needs to be updated. I cannot seem to find a clean update that will finish the install and one that does not have a bunch of junk attached to it. Things like Chromium and Byte Fence. I had to perform a system restore to get rid of it all. What to do now?

After an update days ago many configurations were changed , including the default application to open pdf files ,
it was changed to open with Microsoft Edge.
I changed it to open with my preference , Adobe Reader.
However It happens that every day I boot the system pdfs are set to open with Edge once again.
Is there any other way than ?Choose default apps by file type? or ?right click the file > choose open with > choose other application? to change the file association ?

ps.: the same happens with files such mp4 , wma and .flac to be opened with Groove
I think this is a dirty trick on behalf of MIcrosoft to favor Edge and Groove

A:Every time I boot the system “Edge” is default program to open pdfs

If you're trying to open PDFs from within Edge, then Edge will automatically open them, regardless of what your system default setting is. AFAIK, that doesn't change with the Anniversary Update. Bad Microsoft, bad boy!

However, once you've chosen "Default apps by file type" or other system settings -- AND you haven't been synching your MS account with other devices -- then, opening a PDF file in File Explorer, IE, or any other program will open it in Adobe Reader (or Reader DC, as the case may be).

Does anybody know how to get rid of the Edge shortcut that has been placed on the task bar? I don't want that thing there but unfortunately it cannot be "unpinned".

A:Anniversary update, remove Edge from taskbar

You must have another issue, I can unpin anything, first check that your taskbar isn't locked. Right click on it ...

I'm unable to get to up-date.micro-soft.com or window-supdate.micro-soft.com (I put the dashes in the url's because just using the regular url's in this forum post triggers the same problem as using them in the web address).
