Settings screen only flashes up then disappears - SFC and DISM issues

Q: Settings screen only flashes up then disappears - SFC and DISM issues

I hope someone can help. W10 (64 bit Home) has been working OK on this laptop but recently I have been able to open the settings screen for only a micro-second. Having found people having the same problem I have tried running SFC several times, as suggested, but it says it found an issue it could not resolve.

Again following instructions on the forum I tried running DISM with an iso loaded and this hung at 40% for hours (overnight). I could not find a solution to this, but someone posted their CBS log and was given a solution to the original problem.

I do not understand what to look for in the log file, but there are several lines that mention an error. I attach the log file (zipped as it was too big for the forum), and if anyone can help I would be grateful.

Preferred Solution: Settings screen only flashes up then disappears - SFC and DISM issues

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Settings screen only flashes up then disappears - SFC and DISM issues

Please open an admin command prompt and run the following command (copy/paste this command)

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\Logs\CBS\CBS.log >"%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt"
On your desktop a file called sfcdetails.txt will be created, please upload this file.

I do not remember the exact time that this problem first occurred. Maybe it was a few months ago.. Anyway, I thought nothing of it because it did not and still does not effect my system's performance. However, it is annoying and I would simply like to get the the bottom of it.

When I turn on my computer, the Windows loading screen appears. About halfway through, the screen goes black, and then then logo pops up once more and continues to load XP. It is important to note that screen does not turn off, it simply goes black. Similar to when you make a change to the video settings, such as resolution or refresh rate.

It also goes black every time I click the NVIDIA Control Panel tray icon. Every time, without fail.

I have updated to the newest drivers for my video card, and the problem still persists. I do not have any viruses, spyware, etc.

Any suggestions or experience from similar situations would be helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hi. I am new to this site. A friend of mine has asked me to find out why his Toshiba Satellite, L305D-S5974, Windows 7 32-bit Home Premium, AMD Sempron Processor SI-42, 3GB DDR2Ram 250GB HDD computer will not boot up. He, somehow, dropped the laptop.

At boot up, the "Toshiba" screen comes up and requests selection of F2 or F12. Pressed f2. Screen changes to blank screen with flashing cursor. Cursor flashes twice.....then nothing. Learned that I must click f2 twice in order for boot manager screen to appear. Have clicked on Windows7 selection, the screen remains blank for several minutes while the disk slowly flashes (indicating it is loading). Error Recovery screen says "Windows failed to start"........then screen says "Window has encountered a prolem communication with a device connected to your computer. This error can be caused by unplugging a removable storage device such as an external USB drive while the device is in use, or by faulty hardware such as a hard drive oc CD-ROM drive that is failing. (There was a wireless mouse and the modem cable connected at the time of the incident.....but nothing is plugged into the laptop now). Make sure any removable storage is properly connected and then restart your computer. If you continue to receive this error message, contact the hardware manufacturer. Status: 0xc00000e9.....Info: An unexpected I/O error has occurred."

Can you help me with some ways to get this computer back into operation? Thanks... Read more

Howdy, got an unusual problem with the CLI window in every command-line exe I try to run. I have several MBR backup utilities and all of them are acting up i.e., when I open the exe, there's a quick flash view of the interface, then it's gone. Nowhere to be found. If it's running somewhere, I can't find it. It's not in processes, either. The XP Run/Cmd util works fine, by the way. I can open the said exe in the cmd window but it's awkward for me to run it there. Anyone know what I have to change to make this work like it should? I'd really appreciate.

Hi Everyone this is my first post, i have searched the problems with windows updates on the site but cant seem to find anything that matches my problem. I will do my best to explain to you and if anyone has some advise i would be really grateful

OK then, When i start the computer up it comes up with "Windows can't check for updates" Then when i click on this icon the screen flashes up with no writing on it at all, completely white. And the disappears almost instantaneously.

There are no error codes at all. I have tried to go in to "all programs" and start windows updates but the problem is the same. If i go into control panel and try it there, it will make a click sound but wont even flash up.

As well as this when in control panel it will not let me access "System" to change settings or check performance etc.

I have tried disabling my firewall and AVG and Spyware Terminator Real time protection, but nothing changes it will not allow me to access updates.

I have run checks for any infections on the computer but comes up clean.

I am running Vista Home Premium and have also installed vista service pack 1 without any problems.

The computer seems to be running ok can be a bit slow but i put that down to Acer e management. I'm the only user as its a home laptop and this problem has been happening for as long as i can remember.

I just started having this problem:

1.) Click Start menu.
2.) Mouse to desired program group...
3.) (POOF) watch as your start menu closes.
4.) go back to step 1, repeat as many times as you wish with the same result.

I am almost certain it is related to Internet Explorer 9 which I just installed. I used Sytem Restore to reset my OS into a usable state, re-installed IE9, and the problem is back.

Do you have any ideas?

My machine is a WIn7/AMD Quad Core/4Gigs of RAM/MSI motherboard.
MSE antivirus is the only security I'm running.

Hi Everyone,

I'm completely stuck and need help. My wife's notebook - compaq presario mobile athlon4 1.2GHz with 384mb ram running XP home SP1 has been melting down! She started running adobe photoshop 7.0 to edit some large images and it would just suddenly do one of two things 1)say it had an eror and couldn't save anything then just freeze 2)suddenly flash to a blue screen filled with white text and shut itself down. We sent a system error report to microsoft and it suggested a problem with the synaptics touch pad. I then spent about 2 days downloading all compaq updates and microsoft updates including XP service pack 1. However it continues to do the same things. If you go on the photoshop website it suggests thngs like disabling MMX extensions etc which I've don't to no avail.

Anyway I just thought this was a photoshop thing but now it seems to be affecting XP itself. When you just open the folder with the work and images that my wife has been working on the folder flashes open then the desktop icons and lower bar disappear leaving the background and then the icons and bar return with no report of error or anything. If you copy the folder to another disk drive you get the same thing when you open the folder. Also if you share the folder and open it across the network on another machine - in photoshop under windows 2000 it crashes photoshop. I have tried running chkdsk and defragmenting the drive but it still happens.

Hi, I recently hauled my desktop back to college last weekend and much to my dismay she didn't run. I turned her on, and after a while, she would beep, and the bios would appear, but only for a split second, before disappearing, and then commencing with a second beep before facing me with a black screen and sitting there eating power.

So far I have tried:
Taking out the ram, and putting it in a different slot. (Didn't do anything)
Making sure everything is plugged in (but if you're sure something is disconnected I can try again)
Checking for a faulty plug

I am really stumped, and being at college I am somewhat limited in terms of what I've got to test with. I'm pretty sure the problem is with the motherboard, which is an ECS model.

Thank you for any your time and consideration!

Try looking at this, might give you some insight. Your system specs are not filled in, so it's difficult to analyze.

A:Issues while running DISM

Hi warrior50, welcome to 10F!

Error code 1726 indicates a temporary remote procedure call (RPC) connection problem, and may be caused by an unstable wide area network (WAN) connection.

Before we can go much further It would help if you would fill in your system specs, how to do that is here: System Specs - Fill in at Ten Forums

Some added information that would be helpful:

Has this just started recently, can you give a reference point as to when this may have started from other activity you may have had with your machine? What was the command that you entered that resulted in the 1726 error? Are you on a home or work network? Is a server involved? If home, do you allow other members of your family, or friends access to your machine? If a home network, have you had previous problems with your internet service provider (ISP)?Are you using their router or one of your choosing?Have you recently moved your router, including unplugging and re-plugging the router?
One item you can check is the Services setting for the remote procedure call (RPC) to make sure it is set to Automatic. Use this to get to Services: How to Start, Stop, Restart, and Disable Services in Windows 10

Then start at Option One/step 1, once the services window opens scroll down the alphabetical list until you see the entry for the remote procedure call (RPC):

Meanwhile I'll see if I can get you more help, hang in there weekends are notoriously slow.

Hello, as you already know from the title I have problems with the windows utilities that fix corruptions. After I upgraded to build 1607, those utilities worked, but now after a few weeks I tried to do them again after some driver updates just to be sure and now they find corruptions and can't fix them. I modified my windows a bit, nothing too serious, but since then after getting the errors I reverted them back to win default ( I think I did all of them, not 100% sure, since I don't write down my modifications... silly me) Here are the logs from an hour or so ago, when I tried the DISM / SFC combo. Please help

A:Windows DISM and SFC fail to fix corruptions. DISM error 1726 / WIN 10

All of the CSI Payload corrupt warnings reference .lnk files only. These are File Explorer shortcuts only, not actual binary files themselves. I wouldn't worry about them unless you're noticing issues related to the files they "touch." Try accessing cleanmgr.exe at the command line (or in the run dialog box) and see if it works. If it does, that tells me Explorer still knows where to find things without the shortcuts. Worst case, you can always navigate to these items manually.

OTOH, if you have access to the ISO from which you made your most recent install, you can use that install.wim (from the \Sources folder) as the target for the /source parameter in the DISM command. This should find those missing links (pun intended) and set you straight.

A:Windows booting fails when the BIOS flashes with new settings after loading a driver

Well you should always verify the drivers you download. But BIOS's are not updated or restored in the 'software' sense, they are flashed in the hardware sense. So, to 'restore' simply take the original BIOS and flash it again. You'll probably have to see if you can download the original BIOS from HP.

If your HDD is not detected at boot, WHILE BOOTING you will be prompted to hit F6 to install 3rd party SCSI drivers, hit F6 here. It will prompt you for a floppy containing the drivers for your disk. Make sure you have a floppy ready to go. Again HP will have the drivers on their site, if you do not have one ready.

My wifes laptop, a Toshiba P840 (running 8.1 64bit) has a problem. I also have a Toshiba laptop, a P50t (running 8.1 64bit). On mine, I ran sfc /scannow which found corrupted files. Using this forum as a guide, I ran the DISM cleanup tool, which fixed the problem(s). sfc /scannow is error free.

Ran sfc /scannow on the P840 which found corrupted files. Ran the DISM cleanup tool. It failed with this report: "error: 0x000f0906 The source files could not be downloaded. Use the "source" option to specify the location of the files that are required to restore the feature," etc, etc.

I was puzzled as to why one laptop would obviously download the required files but not the other. Thinking that it might be that I have Windows Update set to notify me of updates but not download them, I changed the setting to allow updates automatically.

I ran DISM Cleanup tool again and it failed again, reporting this: "The restore operation failed. Either the repair source was not found or the component store cannot be repaired. Error: 0x00f081f. DSIM Failed. No operation was performed."

The DISM log file looks strange (not that I have ever seen one before). I will copy/paste some of it here. Once it gets into the "Chinese/Japanese" characters, they go on forever, lol) Th... Read more

I can't tell exactly when this started as I have upgraded the NVIDIA drivers as well as the Dell bios and switched from running the onboard Intel HD 630 to GTX 750ti , but now on a cold boot, with the fast startup off, the screen flashes white for a sec after the Dell logo. It could possibly be white noise but I can't focus on it fast enough. It doesn't happen on restarts. I'm connected via hdmi out to a LG TV.
Dell XPS 8910 using the NVidia GTX 750ti and an HDMI TV as monitor Bios version is 1.1.0 ,1.1.0 Original version was 1.0.9, 1.0.9, can I revert back to 1.0.9 ?

I just built a new computer and I'm fairly certain all the components are compatible with each other, but I've never built a computer before.

All the components are brand new and anyway I built it, the first time I booted it; it ran my windows disc but it was scratched up so I went to clean it. Upon using the computer again, it kept saying 'BootMgr is missing, press ctrl-alt-delete to restart' - now this didn't change upon using or not using my windows disc and I could not enter bios screen.

I'm not using a usb keyboard - using one of those ones with the purple adapter.

Anyway I thought I may have plugged the sata cables into the hdd and optical drivers wrongly and have changed them about multiple times as well as removing the CMOS battery and tried clear the CMOS by touching the two pins.

All I get now is my screen flashes a quick image of the initial load screen and then straight to a black screen, everything in my PC seems to be running fine. Plus I've tried it with and without my graphics card and I get same issue.

What can I do?

A:New build - flashes load screen then black screen

Hi BC welcome to Techspot,

Firstly the "purple adapter" is a PS2 conenction.

There are many reasons as to why this error may occur and how to to sovle this issues but it sounds like you have tried to start a windows installaiton and becasue the disc was scratched it hasn't completed the it hence it comes up with the error "BootMgr mssing". The best solution here I think would be for you to get another Windows disc and try re-installing windows.

to get into the BIOS remove the windows disc from your PC and restart. when the PC is laoding up hit the F2 key and this should allow you to load the BIOS.
I wrote this thread if thsi is any help

hope this helps

A:Screen flashes Dark Blue then goes to Login Screen

Hi Joy

Your computer is likely having serious errors occur, which cause it to reboot. We'll need to change a setting so that it won't automatically reboot when it has such a serious error, but will instead show you an error message that can help you identify the source of the problem.

Disable Automatic Restart
1) Click on the Windows-7 Start button
2) Click on the Control Panel item on the menu to the right.
3) If your Control Panel view is set to Category: click on the System and Security item. [If your Control Panel view is set to Large Icons or Small Icons, go right on to step 4].
4) Click on the System icon.
5) Click on the Advanced System Settings in the left-hand menu.
6) In the Startup and Recovery section, click on Settings.
7) In the System Failure section, uncheck the checkbox next to Automatically Restart.
8) Click OK to save the change.
9) Click OK to exit the System Properties window.
10) You can now exit the Control Panel.

From now on, you'll see error messages rather than instantly restarting. Whenever you see such error messages, be sure to copy them down: they can help identify what's wrong.

But for the moment, we'll move on to a quick-fix try - using System Restore.

Windows System-Restore:
1) Start your computer in Safe Mode
---a) As your computer is powering on, start tapping the F8 key on your keyboard: this should produce the Safe Mode boot menu.
---b) Choose Safe Mode from the list (it will b... Read more

Hi all,

I have Win7 Ultimate x64 installed on an brand new HP Pavilion s5-1205z Slimline desktop.

When I am reading an email or document the screen will just suddenly flash to a black screen for a second. Sometimes it does this several times in a row, and other times just once or twice. It is random and does not matter what program I am in, if I am browsing, playing a video on-line, or typing. I have installed Java and done as much troubleshooting as I can and can't find anything that relates to that kind of behavior at all in the Help Files or FAQ's.

Any suggestions of where I might look to see if I need to check or uncheck something, and what, would be very much appreciated.

A:PC screen suddenly flashes to a black screen and back

Combining the info that you posted here with the info in this thread - I gotta wonder if someone is able to remote into your computer. If you are not too far along in setting up your computer, you might want to consider a clean install without all of the bloatware.

Unless you have a specific need for Java - uninstall it. If you need it, then it might be worth the security risk of having it installed. If you don't need it - then why risk having it installed?

I have a Gateway MD2614U laptop OS Win7 Home 32bit. Now my 15" flat screen tv can also serve as a computer monitor. When I am doing ham radio digital transmissions I have 2 primary prog's open and running at the same time. I setup in Win7 for the flat screen tv to be an extended monitor so one prog is on the flat screen tv and the other is on the laptop screen.
Everything was fine. Then everything went hay wire. At random times prog's started changing colors, blinking on and off on both screens, then the hole desktop started in doing it on both screens. Then everything goes black and a blue box pops up saying "a problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage" There is a lot more writing on the blue screen. That's just the 1st top line. Then the laptop shuts down and reboots. This has happened many times since I plugged in the tv as a 2nd monitor. With the monitor cable to the tv unplugged from the laptop there hasn't been anymore of that random stuff. And there wasn't anything like this before I plugged in the tv as a monitor. What gives here?

I am updating our corporate/enterprise Windows 7 64-bit image with drivers for the new Latitude E7240 model we intend to use. I loaded the drivers like I normally do: mount the Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit custom image using DISM, then inject the drivers:

 dism.exe /image:"C:\build-mount" /Add-Driver /driver:"C:\build\drivers\E7240\USB3" /ForceUnsigned /recurse

Everything loads fine in DISM, no errors at all. Every single INF reports "The driver package was successfully installed."

But when I apply the image to a new E7240 laptop, all the drivers load except the USB 3.0 driver. I go into Device Manager and see the yellow caution sign on that device.

I have tried changing the registry in the image to look at a folder called C:\Drivers as a driver repository and then placed the drivers in there raw... but no luck.

What's frustrating is that you can go into Device Manager, right-click on the USB 3.0 device with the error, then update the driver and it loads fine. Why doesn't this driver load automatically like all the other drivers?

A:Issues with USB 3.0 Driver on Latitude E7240 laptop - loaded into offline Win7 image via DISM but will not install automatically

I had something similar happen on an image I made, geminitx. I ended up mounting the .wim, via DISM, manually copying the driver(s) into \system32\drivers, and re-committing the image. Once applied to the target PC the driver was magically used. I assume what happened was, upon first boot, it realized there was a problem and scanned \drivers for what it needed, found it, and moved on. Pure conjecture but it worked for me at the time and I moved on.

Remove or disconnect the battery.  With the system unplugged, hold the power button for 30 sec.
Try powering up on AC only - if it will but won't with the battery installed, the battery is bad.
If it still won't power up, the mainboard is bad.

A:Having issues with all web browsers. Window disappears to the right.

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums, Miss Allura.

As the problem occurs with all browsers, you might want to check your screen resolution settings in your Control Panel. Chances are you've got the resolution set too high.

So I am really stuck, not realising that I didn't have my restore points turned on..which is frustrating as I had it from windows 7 when I updated..but anywho one of my hard drives crashed (not OS) but froze the computer and on restart I got this crazy flashing bellow is a video I made of what is happening. I left it overnight to see if anything but still was flashing

I have read through a lot of stuff about graphics cards drivers etc..so I've removed drivers, even tested with other Nivida Cards.

In safe mode and in command prompt I tried then SFC which failed then DISM but being not the latest version of Windows build I tried getting a matching WIM (older build of Win ISO) and still getting the not found error..so not sure where to go from here..surely there is gotta be a way to get passed it..its already in windows as I tried the windows + P and that came up and some accessibility stuff but thats it..alt+ctl+del not working..

Hope someone has figured this one out..thanks in advance

Okay - where do I begin!? First off - hello! I'm new. Yup, first post - and it will be a doozy! Heres my problem...

When I open a video file, or certain games - my computer goes nuts. I can see the monitor resolution change to that of the game, then the CPU usage of that game goes to 100% and the screen starts to flash between the game resolution and a blank black screen!!!

If I kill the program - everything goes back to normal. It only does this when I try to play a movie file or some games.

Also, every once in a while - while my computer is booting up - it will stop at a black screen for about 5 minutes, then continue to startup normally. I can't tell anything that might cause these long startups...

Any help would be greatly appreciated - If you need me to post logs from any programs, just tell me what and I'll get on it!

THanks so much!!!

Hi. I have been having this problem for about half a year and I finally decided to ask someone about it.

Whenever I boot up my PC, or come back to it after it has been in Standby/Hibrinating and I enter the Internet (IE or Mozilla Firefox) the entire screen flases from black, to the webpage, black, to the ebpage and so on. It will not stop this until I have been in another webpage for like 10 minutes. If I enter a new webpage, it will stop, but while these pages load, it flashes. I have updated all my drivers and scanned for and viruses, spyware and adware. It isnt my homepage (google) because if I swich it this keeps happening. I really want to put an end to this annoying problem. Please try and help. Any advice is appreciated. Thnank you in advance.
Also, this only happens in the Internet. If I select sometihng else in the task bar, it will stop until I re-enter the browser.

While viewing a web page my screen will begin to flash uncontrollably. It does it with no regularity, and the only way I can stop it is to close explorer then reopen it. Going back to the same page and it will be just fine. At first I thought it may have been something to do with my mouse. It was old and the flashing would only happen when I used the wheel to scroll. I have since replaced that mouse with a new one and it does the same thing when I use the wheel to scroll.
