Giant Context Menu

Q: Giant Context Menu

Sometimes I seem to get a HUGE context menu that goes completely from the top of the screen to the bottom. It seems to have a lot of options that aren't normally there on a simple right click. I never know what I did to get this menu and it seems to pop off about as fast.

Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.2.13) Gecko/20101203 BRI/1 Firefox/3.6.13 ( .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0E)

Windows XP at home and XPPro at work.

It has happened on both computers.

Just curious as to what this is and what I did to make it appear and disappear.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I know that sometimes default settings get changed by accident. If you want you can try and change the settings for the browser. If you hold down the CTRL key and then use your scroll wheel you can change the size of the text on the page. I can look for a more permanent solution for you if this doesn't work.

Cheers!

Hi all,

I started a new thread as suggested in the other discussion.

I picked up a new HP laptop the other day and the icons in the context menu are giant. I remember HP installed a start menu program or something similar when I first booted up.

But as usual with all non MS Signature PCs, I did a crapware/bloatware cleanup. Deleted every single HP installed program until it's a clean state. (The reason I didn't do a fresh install is because of the beats theme....).

I removed that start menu program but the icons are still giant.
It seems like the system icons are affected but program-specific icons aren't. e.g. Chrome's icons for webpages aren't affected. But pin to taskbar and close window are.

Any suggestions?

Okay, I'm not sure if this can be done as easily as I'm hoping. What I'm wanting to do is move already existing context menu items into a cascading context menu to organize and reduce clutter. For instance, I would have a cascading menu named "Scan with" and inside it would be avast! Internet Security and Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.

On a side note, does anyone know how to remove the following context menu items?
Computer
- Show on Desktop
Control Panel
- Show on Desktop
Images
- Set as desktop background
- Print
- Rotate clockwise
- Rotate counterclockwise
Music/Videos
- Add to Windows Media Player List
.txt Documents
- Print

A:want to disable giant start menu right panel icon

You'd probably need a 3rd party tweak program.

You can change the picture by going to control panel (view large or small icons), user accounts, change your picture.

Or click the picture on the start menu itself, then choose change your picture.

Hi

I wondered if anyone out there has had a similar experience to me...

For some weeks now I have had problems where the START MENU wouldn't launch, metro apps (OneDrive, Tweetium, Money, News etc) would fail to launch (just a blank window up), right mouse clicks wouldn't work, internet browsing slowed up...
Signing out of my windows account then back in again solved it... FOR A WHILE. After an hour or two gradually (one app after another etc) the same problems would occur.
Researching this, I came to the conclusion that Windows 10 was corrupt (or at least my user profile was) and a re-install was necessary. OR I also read of compatibility problems with Windows 10 in my AV software (Kaspersky Internet Security 16.0.0.614) and wondered if the problem lay there.
Yesterday I uninstalled Kaspersky and relied on Win Defender. For 2 days now (unprecedented recently) my laptop has behaved impeccably, no problems as above.
So, am I to blame Kaspersky? Am I safe with Just Win Def? Any other AV suites throwing up problems? Any Kaspersky users with any experiences to share?
Thanks!

Hi, I'd like to add a context menu entry to the default set
Open/Open all users/Explore/Explore All users/Sort by Name/Rename etc
which appear when you

right click on a folder in an expanded Start menu (after 'Programs).

Technically, the 'folder' is a 'file folder'.

But the normal set of file folder context menu entries is suppressed by Windows in this instance.

Thus normal additions to the context menu set associated with 'anything' or 'file folders' or 'directories' never affects this set (so far).

I can add context menu entries which appear when I right click on a shortcut, but NOT folders.

I've tried Fast Explorer, and a couple of other utilities.

'Sort By Name', 'Explore All Users' are not in the registry. (Normally context menu entries appear in one of about 6 locations).

Ideas welcome!

Background: I want to do this 'cos I want to keep a 'bad' context menu entry that stops explorer running from this context menu (some programs do that, alas, thus you can't right click, explore the start menu once you install them and their context menu). Normally I have disabled such entries using Shellex View.

So I want to add one which uses a different file manager.

Thanks!

Almost all computer users need to restart, shut down or hibernate their systems at some time and doing all these things were easy enough in previous Windows versions such as Windows XP, Vista and 7. But suddenly Microsoft introduced Metro UI in Windows 8 and removed the Start button and Start menu from Windows 8. Although you can get start button and start menu back using this tutorial but that's a different thing. Many Windows 8 users are facing problems in getting used to this new Metro UI and Start Screen and the most difficult part of this new interface is the missing power options. Hey it's been a while since I've last been here, I really enjoy this Win 7 community hope everyone is doing well.

Anyway let me cut to the chase, basically I want to be able to remove the MagicISO context menu from the right click context menu in Windows 7.

See pics to understand what I'm talking about.

Even after unchecking the "Enable Shell Integration" (see picture 3) option in MagicISO Maker, it still shows up, and when I open the program again the check box is still ticked for that particular option.

I know I never had any issue in Vista or XP, but in this version of Windows it seems unable to work.

I looked on the http://www.magiciso.com website for an update to the program but there doesn't seem to be any at the moment. I've got the latest Build 0281.

Call me a "control/neat/OCD freak" who wants and needs everything in his life to be almost perfect ! LOL but really, I just like my right click context menu to be nice and tidy. I don't use MagicISO that often and when I do I do all my work within the program. Therefore I don't need the MagicISO option to be present.

Anyway I hope my issue is clear, perhaps I would have to modify the registry or something ?

Thanks for all your help I appreciate it !

You can use either ShellExView or ShellMenuView to make disabling that context menu item easy.

I don't know if this is a widespread problem, but I just noticed that I have duplicate context menu entries for "Files" and "Programs" that are reached by typing into the search box at the Start menu. See attached screenshot. This doesn't apply to Control Panel items, Videos, Documents, Music, etc.

Any solutions?

A:Duplicate Context menu entries in Start menu

A long standing issue (XP also) with the context menu when accessed from certain locations.

One menu is appearing for the target, one for the link.

If you right click the offending item - check properties - you will see that your viewing the link, not the actual file.

Wierd, huh?

If I recall, I could avoid the problem if there were no "customizations" in the context menu.

I also remember a connection to the shortcut arrow. With the arrow shown, no doubling.

I really don't remember why it does that. One of the two.

Hello All,

When I click on the search button in the start menu of WinXp,
or when I use the search item in the context menu, it doesn't work.

Nothing happens and I have to wait about 30 seconds

(the start button remains in the dark state, and nothing reacts,

Searching does work if I use the Search button in Windows Explorer.
It also works in safe mode.

Reinstalling the search assistant does not help.

I also checked my computer with adaware, spybot and some AV-programs,
but that doesn't help either.

Anyone have any suggestions?

We have a custom application which users are used to launching by right clicking on the start menu and selecting it from there.

We have made this customisation in both XP and Vista by adding an entry in:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Folder\shell

However when I try to do this in Windows 7 nothing appears.

The only item that appears are the default windows items:
"Properties" and "Open Windows Explorer"

Any ideas if we can actually do this in windows 7 or is there another location in the registry this kind of thing is read from?

I've never tried this, so I don't have back-up on this.

I doubt this could have been changed in Windows 7, since it is used for other options. I've added my own options, but when right-clicking files only. It is only an assumption, though.

I'll check on this.

Tell me if any of these here help. I can't find exactly what you're looking for.

Hello,

I have this rather annoying problem in Vista 32bit SP2. Sometimes my right click menu (Context menu) is invisible. I do see the outline/shadow, but everything is white/blank. Restarting laptop does seem as temp fix, but I have this issue very often.

I tried ShexView, but didn't succeed.

When this occurs, I also don't get to see power down options (Start orb> that menu with Sleep/shut down/log off..)

I know it has something to do with context listers, but not sure how to proceed.

Any idea what to do?

Cheers,
Miki

A:Right click menu (Context menu) sometimes invisible!

Hi miki69,

Open up command prompt, and type:

sfc /scannow

And then when it finishes copy and paste the following into notepad and save it as a batch file (.bat):

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%\logs\cbs\cbs.log >%userprofile%\Desktop\sfcdetails.txt

And run it as an administrator

(Alternatively, you could type all of that into an elevated command prompt, but its quite long).

From here, you should now have a SFC log file on your desktop, can you upload that for us?

Hi guys,

I have just bitten the bullet and bought a new machine with Windows 10. And I actually don't hate it, on the most part I'm getting along with it just fine.

Something I'm finding incredibly frustrating though is the lack of a full context menu in the start menu. I'm not sure if this is the right terminology as no amount of googling seems to address this.

Essentially though in Windows 7 I would click the start menu, click all programs and then right clicking the program I wanted would bring up the context menu. So I could run it sandboxed for example. The only way to do this in Windows 10 seems to be to right click, click more, click open file location, right click the program and then select from the context menu.

Am I missing something obvious? It shouldn't be this difficult surely.

The Item 1 - Item n menu will be populated from info saved in

It doesn't appear from your screenshot that you've specified "medium - 125%" for your font size, but have you?

I've done that myself on my own systems, and deal with this same symptom of yours fairly often but with other application programs. I prefer the slightly larger text characters, as they are clearer and darker... like "more ink".

If you've specified "medium - 125%" then this is a common long-standing problem for many years (including back with WinXP), related to the software product but really tied to Microsoft's providing a way to enlarge things but not automatically increasing window sizes to match.

With WinXP it was "small fonts (96DPI)" vs. "large fonts (120DPI)" and with Win7 it's "normal - 100%" vs. "medium - 125%". Unfortunately, unless the application program is written to use certain standard API's or recognize that the large fonts are in effect and draw its own window... Read more

My OS is WinXP Pro /SP2. On my desktop, I right-click and select "New", and a Context Menu appears with shortcuts to some document types. The same event occurs within a folder when I select File > New. Until recently I had only a few selections: Text documemt, Wordpad document, Rich Text Document, Microsoft Office Publisher Document. Then I installed several new software programs, and their shortcuts also appeared in the Context Menu: Hallmark Card Studio project, Microsoft Streets and Trips map, etc. If I had the option when I installed these programs, I did not choose it, and I do not want these shortcuts!

I searched my Registry and found two Locations where all these shortcut names appeared together:

#1 HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Discardable\PostSetup\ShellNew

This appears to be a feature of the Hallmark software - as such, I'd suggest uninstalling it and then removing the entries (if they remain).

The key at Location 1 is what Windows loads from Location 2 when your profile logs onto the computer. It may have been locked because it was in use - or it may have been locked because of the Halmark (or other) program. Regardless, if the thing installs stuff that you don't want without giving you the option - I'd get rid of it.

Whenever I am in Explorer and right-click on a folder my context menu does not come up and Explorer "hangs". I am forced to go into Task Manager to kill the process and reboot. This only happens with folders and drives. Files are OK. I am running W2K. Thanks.

Try Scandisking it.
Start>Accessories>System Tools>(System) Scandisk

Then, try defraging it.
Start>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmentor

Hop that helps

hey folks =)

i'm looking for a way/tool to customize the context menu in explorer.

having installed a couple of tools, i find my context menu very messy. there's stuff in it, which i've never made use of, yet it clutters so much space.

so,
is there any way without fiddling around with the uac?

thanks in advance.

regards

jan.

Which programs you have already used? What is the exact problem? (Better if you can post Screenshot).

UAC or registry?

You can do from registry. But you have to do one by one. Also you need to know the values of the reg.

Here is up to what I know; you have to modify it and add more values to make yours one. Click here.

hey everybody,

would like some advice on how to remove "briefcase" and "Compressed (zipped) Folder" from the New context menu. I've been tweaking it by going to specific entries in the registry, but don't know where to locate ShellNew for briefcase and zip folder. I've come across some downloadable automated ways of getting rid of them, but I won't do that, I want to do it manually myself.
Any advice would be much appreciated, thank you.

Hello Envy, and welcome to Seven Forums.

The tutorial below can help show you how to. If you do not want to use the REG files, then you can still download them, right click on the REG file and click on Edit to see what changes to manually make in the registry.

Hope this helps,

Which ones? I think WinRar and Unlocker both have options to remove in their settings. Restore Previous can as well as Copy/Move to.

I do alot of single file FTP's to a specific sites during the day. And I thought to myself, it would be really great if I could just right click on the File, select an FTP context menu and the select the site profile I want.

I found something thru my Google Foo but the company seems to have gone under and it doesn't really quite do what I want it to do anyways. It adds the FTP to the Send To menu and you can only setup on profile. I want a separate context menu with profiles. I can't seem to find a download for this either. The link is dead.

You would think they would be building this into all major FTP clients already. If anyone knows of one, let me know.

I use the following a lot:

Code:
I prefer (especially with images) to have them all in one folder that I can browse. If you do, too, then open up a command prompt by going to Start --> Run... and typing cmd and ENTER. Then, go to the folder that contains the folders you want to merge. If the folders were in C:\Documents and Settings, you would type cd\"Documents and Settings" to get to it. Then type the following. Be sure to include the dot at the end:

Code:
for /r %i in (*.*) do move "%i" .

The command above moves all files stored in all sub-folders folders of the current folder into the current folder. You can also move files of just one type. For .psd files, for example, you would replace the *.* with *.psd. The /r stands for "recurse," meaning it goes through not just the current folder, but sub-folders, as well. The %i is a variable. Finally, the dot at the end is shorthand for the current folder.
And I was wondering if it'd be possible to make it into a context menu thing, how I could right click on a folder and it would automatically take note of the folder/subfolders/files and run that command?

Or something quite like it. I believe I used to have something on Mac that did it actually..The Big Mean Folder Machine.

Long story short, I want the ability to right click on a folder and merge everything within seamlessly. Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

A:Would it be possible to run this from a context menu?

I was intrigued by the idea...and tried to come up with a right-click menu entry to do this. So far, this is what I've got:

Quote:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\merge]
@="Merge this folder with subfolders"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell\merge\command]
@="cmd.exe /s /c pushd \"%V\" && for /r %i in (*.*) do move /-y \"%i\" ."

Basically, you would copy/paste this into Notepad, save it with a .reg file extension and doubleclick that file to add the entries to your registry.
After that, you'll get a new context menu entry named Merge this folder with subfolders whenever you rightclick a folder in Explorer.

However: the actual command may not work correctly. DO NOT use this in its current form - I tweaked it a few times and was testing it, until I rightclicked a test folder on my storage drive and upon selecting this command, it started moving files in C:\Windows\system32 around. Needless to say, my heart stopped - thank God it only made a minor mess and I could trace all the files and move them back to where they belong.

I expanded the command line to first make the rightclicked folder its active working directory and then execute the for/move command. I'd just rather not test it again after the near-accident I had, but someone with more shell scripting experience than me can hopefully figure out my mistake.

Anyway, it's something to work with.

Dear all,

Could anyone please tell me if there any utility / software to change 'context menu' behavior in Windows 7, normaly 'context menu' shows up on right mouse click, but I want it on 'mouse over', without any click, just moving mouse over to particular file or folder.

Thanks

I would tend to doubt it since mouse hover triggers Windows "tool tip" handler. It's possible it could be done in AutoHotKey. You can post a request here and see if anyone volunteers to write it for you:
