Solved: Sony Vaio PC Shuts down when tower is moved

Q: Solved: Sony Vaio PC Shuts down when tower is moved

about a week ago I was given a used Sony Vaio desktop model RS310 with XP, 256 ram, 2.8hgz, and a 80gig HD.
The owner had the PC (layed on its side) in a box in the garage for maybe 2 years or less. The PC outer case was pretty dirty, but the inside had your typical dustiness. But I took the whole PC apart and cleaned it like new. Used only liquid cleaners on non electronic boards and such.

Ok, here are the issues
XP boots fine, but when the tower is moved around the Sony Vaio Monitor would shut off, along with the keyboard and mouse. But both fans, and DVD drive were still functional (maybe HD too, but I cant tell). The PC would reboot automactially, sometimes it wouldn't.
I checked the Sony monitor/keyboard/mouse on my other PC to make sure they weren't faulty and they worked perfectly. When the Sony Vaio was up and running normal, I moved the back ports around, the monitor/keyboard/mouse/internet cables and were functioning perfectly.
But this time when I slightly tilted the Tower back, these issues returned. After having the PC on for about 30mins without movement the PC would of all of a sudden do these problems again, sometimes reboot other times not.

Now the PC stays on for hours, sometimes restarts, other times it doesn't. I don't even bother moving the PC around Im too scared. I been able to do all important updates on XP, with SP3.

So the question I have, what do some of you guys think it might be? I personally think the Power Supply might be going out but honestly I don't know much about Hardware.any advice would be appreciated

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Friends of mine just got a new Sony Viao. I'm sorry buy I don't have the model number. It was working fine, displaying the screensaver then all of a sudden the monitor went into a sleep mode and the keyboard went dead. The mouse or keyboard would not wake it up. I turned off the cpu which had a blue light on the power bar. When I turned it on the system was still asleep and the cpu kept beeping intermittantly (approx. 3 seconds apart) I tried to reset the cpu by shutting it down with the power button and unplugging it to no avail. My friend did say that yesterday she moved the tower and the keyboard and mouse plugs pulled out. I imagine that when she plugged them in the cpu power was still on as she got them to work. What would cause the system to shut down all of a sudden and not wake up?? Please help as the user manuals are junk. Why is the cpu now beeping?? HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I just recently upgraded my sony vaio laptop pcg-934A with windows xp and installed a wireless wlan1500 pc card. Before installing/upgrading, my battery was working fine, up to 2 hours of watching a DVD movie on it. Now, while the battery shows as 100% charged, whenever I disconnect the power cord from the laptop, the battery power instantly shows up as 10% charged within seconds and automatically shuts off. I have to replug the power cord onto the laptop in order to have power. Is it possible that the battery went bad overnight? I have been trying to figure this out for a week now and am nervous about taking the laptop to a repair shop, only to charge me $100 just to tell me to buy another $100 battery.

A:sony vaio pcg-934A laptop shuts off automatically when using battery only

Actually call afew of the shops in your area including battery vendors and ask if they can test the battery for you. Most will not charge you to do this.
Unfortunately with batteries there's no rhyme or reason to their failure, ive seen them go both ways; gradually over time and just plain dead overnite.

just recently got a vaio pcg-z1wamp notebook, unfortunately, the hard disk crashed and i had to replace it with a new one and reinstall windows.

i've had no problems in searching for drivers online in the past, but the pcg-z1 is a particularly difficult model to locate drivers for. especially since the sony website isnt working very well.

so far i need the sound driver, video driver, wireless driver for the vaio or better yet a bundle of all drivers for the z1 family.

i have been able to find a few sites but none of them are free, i would pay for them but i dont have paypal or a CC.

I've never had BSOD's on this, but then in the past couple weeks started getting them. It will kind of be like, i won't get any for 2 days then 1 day I'll get it. but that day i get it as soon as i restart, it will give a BSOD after a while of being on the destop. so i leave it for a few hours or overnight and it seems to get better but think bar once. So the BSOD's are more like it doesnt happen doesnt happen then when it happens will give a lot.

The CPU temp has a max of 84 degrees currently probably average of 60 degrees at 20% CPU workload. Ive re-applied thermal paste to the CPU multiple times to lower the max temp but no luck.

Last BSOD i got was approx 36 hours ago

Help will be much appreciated

1. Ensure you have the latest video card drivers. If you are already on the latest video card drivers, uninstall and install a version or a few versions behind the latest to ensure it's not a latest driver only issue. If you have already experimented with the latest video card driver and many previous versions, please give the beta driver for your card a try.

2. Remove and replace AVG with Microsoft Security Essentials for temporary troubleshooting purposes as it may likely be causing file system conflicts:

AVG removal - http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities

MSE - Microsoft Security Essentials - Microsoft Windows

3. In your loaded drivers list, dtsoftbus01.sys is listed which is the Daemon Tools driver. Daemon Tools is a very popular cause of BSOD's in 7/8 based systems. Please uninstall Daemon Tools. Alternative imaging programs are: MagicISO, Power ISO, etc.

4. Uninstall TuneUpUtilities ASAP.

Hi there

I needed to replace the hard drive on a laptop, no recovery disk and it was XP Media Centre. I had an old XP Pro with Service Pack 1 disc and code from a defunct desktop. I have done a clean install on a new hard drive but there a few issues:-
The following hardware will not find the drivers:-
1 - SM Bus Controller
2 - Network Controller
3 - Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus

I do have a standard XP with Service Pack 3 disc that I could use, again from a defunct laptop but I assumed because I was able to locate and download SP3 for the XP Pro installation that would have updated XP Pro.

Finally I cannot get the wireless to connect and do not know if it is because of one of the issue above. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have a Sony Vaio VPCZ1 with a HDMI connector. When I connect the Vaio to my new LG LED TV via a HDMI cable, the TV does not detect any signal. To send a signal from the computer to the TV, I used the F7 key to tell the computer to run either a duplicate output or a projector only. Neither option works. Does anybody know what is going on and how to get the TV to recognize the computer signal?

My laptop has recently decided to not connect to the Internet anymore. It does not detect any networks (wired or wireless). The little wireless switch on the front is still on, and has been on since i bought the laptop 7 months ago.

I have tried a system restore, disabling the wireless and wired adaptor but still just get the message that no networks are available. There are networks available as it is sat about 15cm away from the wireless router/modem and is also connected via an ethernet cable (which I have tested on another laptop).

Is there anything I can try? I have tried phoning the Sony Support line but it is closed until tomorrow morning.

I have posted a few other times recently regarding this epic piece of junk Sony Vaio laptop that I am helping a friend set up.

It was performing so poorly that I disabled many services to help speed things up a bit. I was told here that disabling services could lead to more problems, so for the sake of troubleshooting, I've restored the system to the state it was in right out of the box.

There are a couple of blaring problems. Things seem to freeze up at times, I can't click at certain times and the biggest issue is that the system appears to hang and/or go at an EXTREMELY low speed during certain functions.

One example is Windows Update. I'm quite familiar with Windows Update on XP. I've never used Vista, but I would think it would be similar. I've never seen updates take this long, and these aren't large updates either.

This screen had stayed like this for almost 10 minutes. No movement on the progress bar whatsoever. Eventually it starts up and will finish but, it takes FOREVER:

There were other updates too, that were rather small (under 100 mb) that just froze for an eternity before finishing, at best going VERY slowly. I'm talking having to wait 20 minutes for updates that should have taken minutes.

Some of the updates required a restart at which point I could have written a couple of novels by the time it finally booted into windows after various reboots and a stra... Read more

Hi There

This is just a query and apologies if in the wrong forum.

I have just bought a new Sony Vaio VGN-NW20ZF/S recently with windows 7 on it. i removed mcaffee and put kaspersky 2010 suite and FM 2010 and need a quite powerful machine and the guy in the shop said this will be ok which it has, which is one of the main reasons i bought the machine.

The battery seems to take ages to charge (it is at 66% at the moment) and still has an hour and if down to 10% and takes over 2 and half to maybe 3 hrs to charge but am not sure exactly as i charge it over night when the machine is switched off. Is this normal? The battery is a 2.5 hr battery.

The battery seems to discharge quite quickly although this might be that i am using the machine and loose track of time.

i am trying "batteryBar Pro" for 30 days and it seems quite good.

Also it seems to take a wee bit longer to to load than when i first got it. Especially the VAIO GATE which takes a wee while to come up.

I have the machine connected wireless to a router and connected in a network to 2 other desktop machines (running Windows XP).

The bottom of the latop seems to get hot after an hour or 2 and wondered it that is normal,. When using it on my lap i use a book to put it on between my legs and the laptop as it is hot.

I want to recover the huge amount of space tied up with the recovery files that come with the system new. I have made my 8 recovery CDs. Has anyone successfully done this? If so, how should I go about this? I want to lean down my C drive because it will not defrag enough to do any good.

Not really sure what you're asking, but if you want to get rid of the partition, then I suggest you look up the HDD manufacturer and then use a bootable HDD diagnostic kit. Mine is a Hitachi and I burned a bootable CD and used it to check the health of my HDD - however there is an option there to erase the partition as well...

I think a lot easier way is to go to administrative tools and disk or computer management. You should be able to figure out something... all the best.

I have a Sony Vaio, FS740/W lap top, whose video will hopefully that will go into a Sharp LC big screen Model LC52L65U with a 15 pin PC input

Any ideas? I was hoping I could plug in the laptop and use the big screen to teach some of the veterans here, how to access the internet. Easier to do with a big screen, if ya know what I mean.

So, this is what happened:

1. A pendrive infected with virus was inserted (unknowingly)

2. Malwarebytes scanned and removed them. After removing asked me to restart, which I did.

3. I remember some system32 folder files were shown as infected but I dont remember exactly the names.

4. After reboot, I got vaio splash screen and then just a black screen. Nothing else!

What I have tried so far:

1. Tried the "unplug battery and power plug, then press the power button for a minute or two and then connect just the power plug (not battery) and boot" thing, didnt work.

2. Tried the assist button. But the first option named "start troubleshooting (recovery)" option restarts the laptop and again after the vaio splash screen, I get the black screen.

PS: The only way to get to see the 'boot into safe mode, network mode, etc" options is through that assist button. It doesnt work! I can however access the bios options.

3. Tried booting ubuntu live from a flash drive and it worked successfully. However, when I tried to open the windows paritions within the ubuntu live usb drive, it said they were "unclean drives"and failed to mount them.

4. So, I tried the Bitdefender rescue cd and scanned the whole system. It found 1 infected file (although it was more like a potentially unwanted program or something, not a malware or serious virus.)

5. Also, tried a windows 8 installation disk but it too would not boot. Tried a windows install... Read more

Hi, all!

So, my older Sony Vaio has been running incredibly slowly lately. Several weeks ago, my fan died and I had to send it to a repair store to get it replaced. Mind you, I got this one as a refurbished model with modifications, so I suppose you could call it a bit of a custom build. They had a bit of trouble finding the proper replacement model because of this, but eventually I got my beloved laptop back. After getting it back, it was even slower than before. It has gotten to the point where simply checking my email is a 5 minute process (Feels like forever - it used to be so fast!)

OS: Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Processor: Intel(R) Core(TM) 2 CPU T7400 @ 2.16GHz (2 CPUs)
Memory: 2046MB RAM
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400

Let me know if you need further information! Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

hey my bios is not recognising my hdd so when i took it apart i noticed the hdd had no labels on it and looked very different to normal hdd's. i wanted to know how i can check if my hdd is the problem or the connector. i cannot find a replacement hdd but found a link to the connector. here it is: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/SONY-VAIO-VGN...6QQcmdZViewItemQQssPageNameZRSS:B:SRCH:GB:105
Plz help as i don't know what else to do with this laptop other than chuck it. thank you in advance

A:Solved: Sony vaio vgn-tx1hp hdd problem!!

It might be a 1.8" drive instead of a 2.5" drive, but there should be a label on it. You sure it doesn't have any additional casing on it that needs to come off? Can you take a picture of it including one of the connectors? Hopefully a better picture than the fuzzy one on eBay.

got a replacement battery and a different original from a computer bought at same month when the initial one became a brick for some undetermined electrical charging problem. Initially, if the larger generic replacement stopped being recognized, I could put in the other original and the system would reset. After a night when the hibernation file was deleted (now restored), and the batteries changed, the unit has never recognized either battery. The complaint is the same as this prior : It shows that there's a battery there when I plug it in, and will power the computer when I unplug the power supply. However, my orange battery light blinks very rapidly, nonstop and the batter will discharge but not charge. Should I turn off my computer, it will not t... Read more

A:Solved: Sony Vaio battery not recognized

This problem solved by two steps:
1) replacing the ISBMgr.exe in registry with the 'Version.txt' stopped the ISBMgr file from working AND notifies me of the registry switch to be corrected later by showingup on boot, but
2) using device manager to delete Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System from the System category of devices seems to have re-initiated the entire system.

On deletion of Microsoft ACPI-Compliant System, I had to be ready to replace the video driver; all the other drivers seem to have been found automatically.

Both portable batteries now charge and are charged. The system boots by battery; operates on battery.

The system hibernates correctly after having followed instructions to rebuild hibernation file by
using an administrator command prompt, & typing:
powercfg /hibernate on
followed by a computer restart.

I also fixed the power settings to protect hibernation by following these instructions on all power settings:
•Click “Change advance power settings”
•Scroll to and expand the “Sleep” option.
•Select “Off” to the “Allow hybrid sleep” option.
•Scroll to and expand the “Power buttons and lid” option.
•Select “Hibernate” for the “Sleep button action” option. 10. Select “Hibernate” for the “Start menu power button” option.

The VAIO VGN-CR320E now uses its battery function as it should. I continue to get the text at start up for having replaced ISBMgr.exe in the registry with Version.txt. I have not yet decided to delete ... Read more

Hi, I'd appreciate your assistance please.

I didn't know whether to post this in this forum or the Vista one so feel free to move it.

I recently purchased a Sony VAIO laptop running on Vista and cannot get it to connect to the internet wirelessly at home using an ADDon GWAR 3500 router. The laptop shows that it is connected wirelessly to the router but not to the net. It gets this same problem even when I disable security.

I have a desktop (running XP) that can connect fine which uses a Belkin usb wireless adapter.

The laptop will connect to the net if I connect it to the router via lan cable.

I have tried the laptop at other people's houses, and it connects in seconds, which is really frustrating, also I tried a Toshiba router using XP and it connected at my house without problem.

In the end, I contacted Sony and they took the laptop back and could find no fault and returned it to me in the same state. Sony have suggested there is a fault with the Vista. I'm at the end of my tether and I'm even thinking about putting XP on there. I have tried a friend's Vaio which was the same model, and had the same problem so somewhere there is contention between the Vaio and this ADDon router.

Having searched other logs, I can see that you usually ask for certain info, so I've posted it below. Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Screen keeps freezing, not sure if it would be considered a crash because the hard drive activity light will keep blinking. When it freezes the mouse doesn't move and I can't input anything in the keyboard (doesn't show on screen). I am still able to turn off the display with the "display off" button and the num lock/caps lock/scroll lock lights can still be turned on/off. I've tried restoring the hard drive and reinstalling the OS but I'm not able to get far due to the freezing problem. This is the third time this has happened. The two previous times I have been able to restore everything, but this time i cannot. During the restoration/reformatting process, the screen froze but I pressed enter when the hard drive stopped spinning and it was able to complete the reformatting and restart by itself. The freezing problem however, still exists. I would really appreciate it if someone could help me out!

Vaio VGN-Z520N won't boot past the initial BIOS splash screen. Screen goes blank, but power light is on and backlight for laptop screen is on. No HD access noises, fan winds down after the screen turns black. Can't check w/ external monitor, as I don't have the correct cables...

I have tried:

* Shutting it off and removing the battery for several minutes
* Resetting BIOS to default (can get into BIOS using F2 at splash screen).
* Re-seating memory chips.
* Checked for video and panel function using Knoppix - A-ok there, everything works fine in Knoppix.

System is running Win7 32 bit w/ 4GB RAM. Recently installed Win7 and all Win7 drivers from the Sony website.

My uncle gave his Sony Vaio laptop to me to try and remove the viruses.
What I found was shocking.
The Vaio probably had hundreds of viruses.
For example most of the time when I click on any link on any search engine I get redirected to a random page called pub.findology or something like that.

I will post the HijackThis log soon.

I am having this problem with my laptop.
Today I was on my laptop for about 2 hours or so then it turned off because I ran out of battery.
So I turned it back on and it gives me two options launch startup repair (recommended) and start windows normally.
When I click on launch startup repair it pops up with a loading bar at the bottom and when it loads it pops up with the windows 7 background with a mouse cursor but nothing else. I waited about 1 hour to see if anything would pop up but nothing did .
So then I turned it off and tried start windows normally, but still no joy. This just crashed the laptop and restarted it.
I also tried running it on safe mode but when I do this its just a black screen saying 'safemode' in each corner of the screen.
I tried all the advanced boot options but nothing worked.
I was going to try to restore the computer but I didn't have the windows 7 install cd and I can't use safe mode so this wasn't going to work.
I also tried the draining battery technic, that didn't work too.
After a couple of hours trying to fix this I started it up one last time and it pops up saying:

SMART. Failure predicted on hard disk.
WARNING: Immediately back-up your data and replace
your hard disk drive. A failure may be imminent
Press f1 to continue.

I have a basic idea of what this means but I am still not to sure.

Any help would be appreciated.

I had a bluescreen on this sony laptop, and I have attached the dump file to the thread.

Can anyone identify what caused the bluescreen (driver... program... etc??)

I was watching a flash video as the computer crashed. I am thinking it was perhaps the graphics driver. If you can't identify what caused the BlueScreen thru that file could you tell me where to check to find out??

Hello to all,

I have a 7 yr old Sony Vaio GR370 laptop with a loose hinge. When
the laptop is open at any viewable angle, there is about 1-1.5in.
of "play" on the LCD portion of the lid. It stays up fine - it's more of an
annoyance then anything else.

Is there any way to tighten/repair/replace the hinges ?

thanks in advance !

A:Solved: Sony Vaio - Loose hinge

I'm just guessing, but I think you're missing a retaining screw that holds the hinge post in place.
Look at the back of the machine to see if there is a place for a screw that is missing.
