Disk clean-up failed after deleting Datastore.edb

Q: Disk clean-up failed after deleting Datastore.edb

I had to free some space space on disk C: using treesize and soon I realized that I don't have anything that I can delete from user side do much so I was looking at big files in Windows directory and put my eyes on DataStore.edb 1GB size.
After searching an looking on internet I saw lots of posts and article saying that there's no harm just that I will lose updates history that can be remade. So to be safe, I moved the DataStore file to my PC in case i will need it. Now I had lots of free space but short after I was having a lot less free space than I had before! less than 1 GB and Windows is asking for a restart to install update.. Datasore.edb is now arround 8MB After checking a little bit, i think Installer and winsxs folder filled up.
Can this be fixed somehow ? It will free up after restart ?

What could I do to fix this ?

Preferred Solution: Disk clean-up failed after deleting Datastore.edb

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, Welcome to TSG!!

You have two anti-virus programs running, which will cause trouble. Uninstall one of them. Restart the machine and post a new HJT log.

Download this tool to your desktop:
http://www.uploads.ejvindh.net/rootchk.exe
Run the program. After a short time a logfile will turn up. Copy the contents of the log into the thread.

Notice: Some security-programs prevent the creation of dummy drivers with certain names. This may cause false positives. If the log of rootchk contains a lot of hidden drivers, you may want to turn of your security programs while rootchk is scanning (you should then unhook your network connection as well)

I am running out of disk space and it is starting to slow down my PC running Windows 7.
I noticed that the folder datastore.edb is taking up 11% of my hard drive.
Is it safe to reduce or delete this file.
I believe that there may be consequences. If I do will the benefits outweigh any consequences?
Any help would be appreciated.
Many thanks,

Using ASP:

I have an ACCESS database called maui.mdb saved in the same root as a folder named inc.

In the inc folder I have 2 files, adovbs.inc and datastore.inc

I want to write to the maui.mdb and at the top of my asp page I have:

Option Explicit
#INCLUDE file="inc/adovbs.inc"
#INCLUDE file="inc/datastore.inc"

In my datastore.inc my code is as follows:

'declaring a variable for the connection
dim objCon
'built in asp object.. Defining the connection object
Set objCon = server.createObject("ADODB.Connection")
'give the connection a name
objCon.open "DSN=??????" 'DSN means data source name

I do not know what name to give my datasource so the maui.mdb will open.
HELP PLEASE!!

A:datastore connectivity in ASP

You have to go into ODBC manager ot create a DSN for the local database. If you want to do it easier use the file path and a different connection

strConnect = "Provider = Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;" &_
Data Source = path to maui.mdb; " &_
"Persist Security Info = False"

I have Windows Server 2012 R2 and it is my file server and it auto syncs user's file every minute. I have 3 disks. The primary partition (Disk 0) and two others (Disk 1 & Disk 2). My question does not include the primary
partition.

I shrunk Disk 2 so that I had unallocated space. I then extended Disk 1 using the unallocated space from Disk 2 creating spanned volume on Disk 1 (extended volume on Disk 2). It did not do what I wanted so I want to 'undo' it. Can
I just delete the spanned volume on Disk 2 (space that added to Disk 1)? Or more accurately if I'm going to delete the spanned volume on Disk 2, will it affect my users' files?

My PC seems to access DataStore.edb a lot, bringing my hard drive to a crawl for minutes at a time. It happens when I first boot up, and on and off as I use it throughout the day. What is triggering this to be accessed? Is there anything I can do to minimize this file being accessed so often? (no viruses - I already scanned for viruses).

I already put the datastore files on my Avast exclusion list, as I've read that antivirus scanning those files can tie up the system.

I also just installed optional Windows Update KB3050265 as I read it fixes a major issue with Windows Update tying up system resources.

Is it correct that this file is tied into the update service? if so, would it make sense to disable the Windows update service and only manually enable it just to update my PC when needed rather than leaving it on?

A:svchost.exe (netsvcs) using DataStore.edb

It doesn't make sense to disable windows updates - for security reasons. You can try Brink's fix here:

Windows Update - Reset - Option 3

If that doesn't work you can try another fix but please do not go ahead unless you have a system image backup and know how to restore the backup.

Very high memory (and sometimes CPU) usage by svchost.exe: up to 1 GB

Note: The Windows Update download links and force install instuctions relate to Windows Update Agent 7.6.600.320 and as you have installed Windows Update KB3050265 which adds improvements for those wishing to upgrade to Windows 10 - those instructions probably don't apply unless you can find a standalone installer for whatever version of Windows Update Agent that you have currently installed.

Quote:
Fixes included in this update
This update addresses an issue in which system performance can be decreased during scans. This issue has the greatest effect on computers that have a small amount of physical memory.
This update addresses an issue in which Windows Update scans can fail and generate a 0x8007000E error.
General improvements are made to support upgrades to a later version of Windows.

Also note: You may need to run the Hotfix in aggressive mode two or three times with a reboot each time for the settings to take effect.

Another option would be to remove KB3050265 using Powershell.

For me personally - Windows Update Agent is 7.6.600.320 and all Windows 10 Upgrade updates have been removed.

Today in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\Logs the

Current Win Update History has Only 5 Entries.
The DataStore.edb file in DataStore is ....

Is the History Loss actually in the Logs file section and is DataStore.edb Immune from changes when a New SoftwareDistribution Folder is created so that its contents Transfer to the New SftDist Folder?
Could I have Copied a File from the Re-Named SD Folder and pasted into the NEW SD Folder to retain old Update History?

So this really irritates me because I just spent hundreds of dollars sending my laptop to HP last year because the hard drive completely failed. I have a 1TB hybrid hard drive and 22Gb solid state used for caching.  When I booted up my computer Intel Rapid Storage Technology said there was an issue.  When I opened it, it says that the status of: SATA disk (932 GB)(System) Accelerated, is Failed.  My SATA_Array_0001 22GB is fine though.  So I ran a System Quick Test, everything passed except Hard Drive Short DST Check: FAILEDFAILURE ID: Q4MP7Q-6RA82U-MFGJWK-60W303 This is weird because other than the computer telling me there is something wrong every time I restart it, It seems to run just fine.  Im just worried because I don't want it to randomly die on me one day.

A:SATA disk failed and Hard Drive Short DST Check: Failed

Hi there @nmulji,  Thank you for joining in on the HP Support Forums and Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions, find solutions and get help from others in the community! I read your post on the HP Support Forums and understand that the Hard Drive in your HP ENVY TouchSmart 15t-j100 Select Edition CTO Notebook PC failed the Short DST Check.  SMART (Self-Monitoring Analysis and Reporting Technology System) uses a technology known as predictive failure analysis to tell you when a hard drive failure is imminent. Have you tried to Restore the BIOS? If not, please try this step first. Then, just to be on the safe side, back up your data that way it does not get lost. However, there might be certain conditions that cause a hard drive failure message to display when a problem does not exist (a false positive). To fix false positive hard drive errors, please try updating the hard drive firmware. You can check whether an update is available by going to the  Get software and drivers page. You will need to put in your Model Number and then click the links that pertain to the computer configuration and see if a hard drive update is available.  You could also try to do a  Disk Defragment to consolidate files and move them to another section of the drive where errors are less likely to occur. Did this reply resolve your issue or answer your question? If... Greetings,

I've done a clean install of Windows 8 + installed all Windows updates.

After doing so I ran the disk clean-up tool to remove temp files and saved files from Windows updates, however I have ran into a problem. The disk clean-up tool gets stuck when it reaches the Windows update Clean-up stage. It's literally been on there for the past hour. When restarting it does say configuring updates but no % bar and also would just get stuck there unless you manually reboot.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

A:Disk Clean-up - Windows Update Clean-up Stuck.

I had the same problem with windows 8 a while back and googled it and found some sites that said to delete everything in C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution, do not delete the SoftwareDistribtion folder, only the folders and files in it, these are for the windows updates when installing or something like that. The sites said the the files in the folder could be corrupt. The deleted items will be recreated the next time you check for Microsoft updates. The clean up tool then ran fine BUT it has occurred several more times and I again had to delete the files. I also installed Windows 8.1 beta on a separate hard drive and guess what, it is doing the same thing. Looks like a bug in windows, but deleting the files I said will allow the clean up tool to run. I would only do this if you are brave or see what other people say first.

Let's say I have several different updates I know I don't want. For example:
KB2952664 KB2976978 KB2977759 KB2990214 KB3021917 KB3035583

After a fresh install of Windows 7, there are a few hundred updates to be installed. I don't want to have to manually compare each update to my list of unwanted updates...

I would like a script or batch file which I can run before running Windows update for the first time, which will automatically mark these updates as hidden in the DataStore.edb file, so that I can just run all the updates without having to manually hide my unwanted updates.

It looks like maybe a solution can be put together using this information:

Mark A. Ziesemer: Scripted hiding of Windows Updates under Vista

This is slightly above my level of competence. Can anyone who is more familiar with this environment please comment as to how easy it would be to do what I want here?

Thank you!

Hi guys,
I hope some of you can help me out. I upgraded my mini-pci wireless card in my laptop and I'm having trouble getting it to work. It is compatible so thats not the issue. The card I had was an Intel Prowireless 2200BG card and now is an Atheros AR5001x card.

When I install the drivers for the Atheros card, about 75% through the installation, the computer freezes. I have to restart and when I do, during the windows starting progress screen, it freezes. I go into safe mode to delete the Atheros driver from the device manager and when I restart it works. So obviously, there is some sort of conflict. I'm pretty sure the conflict is with the previous Intel 2200BG driver after doing some research.

Hi swiftbmx,

Try going into the CMOS setup for your laptop. You may have to press delete or F10 or something similarduring startup. (A message about setup will show during the boot, but before Windows starts) I am guessing the intel adapter is built into your laptop. You may have to disable it in CMOS setup.

After doing that, try reinstalling and the uninstalling the driver for that adapter. Another option would be to reinstall the intel adapter and then disable it.

As for the Atheros AR5001x card, try installing that with your firewall and virus protection turned off. I have seen those block installations. Just be sure to turn both back on when finished.

Good Luck,

Yesterday when I turned my computer on, it was really slow and I couldn't open any programs. Then it went all blue then white. When I rebooted I see " Checking .media presence, media present, start pcs over ipv6, then Error: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed. I've tried hitting f11, but it just fills the screen with the error message. Is it dead or is there hope?

A:Error: no boot disk has been detected or disk has failed.

Seems like your hard drive has failed. You may have to replace the drive and reinstall Windows. Please use these instructions for testing your hard drive.*Works even if your PC doesn't boot to Windows.    If you found my answer helpful please say thanks by clicking on the Thumb's Up icon. If my answer solved your problem please mark it as the Accepted Solution. Windows 8 HP Pavilion 500 boots to "Error: No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed" - Hard Drive Diagnostics pass - If I go to "Run UEFI Application" in the boot menu, then manually browse to the Bootx64.EFI file, the system boots to Windows correctly. - Enabling/disabling Secure Boot or Legacy Boot in BIOS isn't making a difference. - System Recovery from the boot menu is accessible. - Automatic Repair has no effect. System Restore has no effect. - Process that I found for rebuilding corrupt UEFI partition has no effect (Command Prompt, DiskPart, assign drive letter to EFI partition, browse to the boot folder, Bootrec /fixboot, Bootrec /fixmbr, etc) - Am now out of ideas. Hoping to avoid a Format/reinstall, as the client use applications that he no longer has installation cd's/downloads for.

A:Error no boot disk has been detected it disk has failed

That message is coming from the Intel network (nic) card looking for a network boot source.  It could also mean the hard drive has failed since the network boot option should be the last choice on the boot menu.  Enter the BIOS to verify whether the hard drive is detected or not and check the boot order, too.  If the hard drive does not show on the boot menu, then it most likely has failed.

A:Error: no boot disk has been detected or disk has failed.

It does appear that your hard drive has failed.  You didn't give the specifics about your PC but if you want to troubleshoot further and it's a desktop you could open the case and place your fingers on the hard drive after boot up. If the hard drive is mechanically running you should be able to feel a slight humming vibration. You should also check that the data and power cables and connectors are securely attached and not damaged. You can also boot into BIOS/UEFI to see if the hard drive is being detected. You could also try a different SATA connector to rule out a bad connector.  If still no luck. Replace the hard drive and use Recovery Disks to re-install Windows. If you didn't create your own you can buy them from HP or a third party vendor.  If you found my answer helpful please say thanks by clicking on the Thumb's Up icon.          If my answer solved your problem please mark it as the Accepted Solution. When booting into my pc the computer doesnt boot windows but instead shows this error.

Ive performed SMART And Long DST Tests and both passed
Ive even tried putting another hard drive that i know works, in as well and i still get the error.

In the Bios Menu i do not even see the hard drive at all, neither the CD-ROM.
But when i go into the BIOS Startup, and go to storage, then Device Config, It Tells me about both my Hard Drive and CD-ROM.

Im absolutely stumped and ive tried everything.

The BIOS I use is: AMI 2012

Its an HP Pavillion p7-1446s

hello
I had many problems with BSOD crashes, and decided to make a new clean install (SSD or harddisk).
If I make a new clean install (no upgrade) is it enough to create 1 continuous unallocated disk and then it will make a clean install
Or do I have to "clean up" my old disk first before making a clean install?

A:Clean disk before clean install?

You can delete all of the partitions on the disk that you're installing Windows to. The installer will automatically create the partitions that it needs (2 for an MBR disk, 3 for GPT), and format them. It takes very little time, at least on an SSD.

Hi:
On XP, there is a handy tool, clicking 'my computer' with tools which have three different tools. disk clean, defrag and disk error to run XP in good condition.

Wonder how or where those tools on Win 7?

Thanks for your help in advance.

A:Defrag, Disk error and disk clean

Hello Snowflake10

You can follow this guide to use Disk Cleanup.

You can follow this guide to Scan And Fix Your Hard Drive.

You can follow this guide to Defragment Your Hard Drive.

P.S: The Windows Defragmenter now defrags your hard drive automatically, so it's not really necessary to do it on your own. It works better than XP's too.

Happy Computing!

Hi,

Unfortunately, I used a 3rd party registry cleaner and now I cannot use disk deframenter or disk clean up. My disk defragmentor says, "please run chkdsk/f" but it does nothing to help. I get a message that says ..."could not lock current drive." Then is asks if I want to use Chkdsk /f upon closing and on next restart of Windows chkdsk will occur. When I press "y" and restart my computer nothing happens. I am very frustrated. Have uninstalled all 3rd party registry cleaners and still disk defrag will not work.

Thanks
Jill

A:Having trouble with disk defrag and disk clean up

in the run box type
sfc /scannow

then try running cleanup and defrag from safe mode

Hi, I brought my HP ENVY Phoenix h9-1405a about three years ago, it has been very slow when I start the computer (display with hp logo loding sign) and when I just get into windows 8 (pre-loaded), so I reinstalled windows 8. However,  it sometimes turn up with a black screen and says "No boot disk has been detected or disk has failed" after long waiting at hp logo without a loading sign or a blue screen with Error Code 0xc0000185.  Other times might be lucky to get into windows 8 after very long time of waiting at hp logo with a loading sign. Tried hp System Diagnostics, all passed.Tried reset BIOS setting,  still not working.Checked all connectors of the hard drive that they are properly cabled and firmly seated. Help plz.

I just cloned my OS HD to a new Crucial M4 128Gb & it is working just fine.

I later noticed a failed disk - that is about the same size as the new M4. Screenshot is attached.

Do I dare delete this failed phantom disk? Please - no guesses!

OK - I went ahead & deleted it. No ill effects.

Hello. I left my computer on for 2 hours and I come back to see this error. I ran the hard disk check and it passed everything however the error keeps showing up. Is the disk dying or is there some faulty connection?

A:No boot disk detected or the disk has failed

The first thing to try is to disconnect the connectors at the disk and on the motherboard. Reconnect them afterwards and then power up the PC.

A:no boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed

Hi @Jimmy56,Welcome to the HP Support Forums! I understand that you had a "no boot disk has been detected"  type of error on start up, and that you replaced the hard drive and have the same issue. I am happy to help with this. If you put back the original hard drive you can use the following to test the hard drive. It is possible there was a connectivity problem and just re-seating the hard drive could make a difference. HP PCs - Hard Disk Error Displays before the Computer Starts As to the newer hard drive you put in, if there was not an operating system installed you are going to get the same type of message. You could do the same hard drive diagnostics from the above link, just to be sure the drive is good. Please let me know the results, but if just installing the original hard drive back in to the system works, and it starts up properly, then please mark this post as a solution. Kudos would also be appreciated.

Not sure if this is the right forum, but two days ago, I was using my computer when it suddenly froze. Couldn't get it to unfreeze so I powered it off, and when I powered it on, the message "No boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed" appears.

How can I fix this?

Thanks.

You didn't provide a description of your computer and how old it is, but it sounds like its hard drive has failed and needs to be replaced.

I have an HP Pavilion Series desktop serial number 2md3380gp5. Model number p7-1380t. I can't remember if I was running Windows 7 or 8. I had a virus awhile back (ransomeware) and did a factory reset on the computer. All of my stuff was backed up, so that wasn't a problem. I don't have backup disks with this computer. I bought it a few years ago and can't remember if they sent them with or not.

Anyway, it was working fine for a few months and I wasn't doing anything special with it. It started shutting down, than shutting down when I was doing virus scans, progressively until it locked me out completely and I couldn't do another factory reset.

Now, when I try to boot it up, it says,

Intel UNDI, PXE-2.1 (build 083)

This product is covered by one or more of the following patents (please message me if you really want all the patent numbers)

Realtek PCI3 GBE Family Controller Series v2.44 (10/07/11)

My old hard drive crashed I think. I replaced the hard drive on my all-in-one and when I turn it on, I get the message 'no boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed'  .  I want to install Win 7 but when I put that into the CD drive, it won't boot.   Is there something else I need to wake up the hard drive? Thanks for any advice!

I brought a new hard drive to go into my Hp pavailion p6 series p6-2302 eam and when I put the new hard drive in and booted it up it came up with this error message.  no boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed.  this came up even before I put on windows so I'm not to sure what to do? I've gotten into the bios and tried to boot the system from a disk and a external hard drive but neither of them worked I'd also tested the hard drive but it said all was okay and the computer could read it so I'm kind of stuck now of what to do.

A:no boot disk has been detected or the disk has failed

That message would be appropriate for a blank hard drive.  The Windows system needs to address the drive and make it ready.  This can be done either with a Windows install disk or the Recovery media disk set

A while ago I posted about changing my W10 32 bit install which works flawlessly, to a W10 64 bit install.
My desktop PC is fully 64 bit compliant and before upgrading I ran a full retail version of W7 (I have both 32 and 64 bit versions).

Anyway, I backed up everything I wanted to keep to a spare usb hard drive, and put the install disk saved from an ISO  64 bit version of W10 into my DVD drive and re-booted.
The setup started and I got as far as the option to perform a repair or custom install, I choose 'custom' and a screen appeared showing my drive partitions and various options including 'format'.

That is where the problems started:  I could not format my drive (format option did nothing), and got this error message:  " Windows cannot be installed to this disk. The selected disk has an MBR partition table on EFI systems,Windows can only be installed to GPT disks."

Anyone got any idea what this means?

So I re-booted again and tried to start the already installed 32 bit version ..... It wouldn't start! Instead I got messages saying that the system was trying to repair Windows, this ultimately failed, and I haven't been able to start W10 since?

I also found out that no restore points have been saved, so can't go back to a working version.

Any ideas what I should do to correct this problem? Or better still how to install the 64 bit version?

Hello. I recently bought a m.2 ssd because my HD was to slow. I used Media Creation Tool to make a bootable usb and installed the windows, but a problem appers when I try to boot the PC.It gives me a error code: 0xc000000e when I try to boot it, saying "A required device isn?t connected or cannot be accessed". So it gives me 4 options:1 - press enter and try again (doesn't work)2 - press F1 and go to the recovery menu (doesn't do anything, computer just restarts and it shows me the same error again)3 - press F8 for Startup Settings (also doesn't work, screen just starts flickering when I press F8 and nothing happen)4 - press ESC to open Firmware UEFI settings (I click it it opens the bios I closed it and computer starts normaly, but the error keeps showing up every time i start up) I already try to fix the issue using Troubleshooting, but it can't repair anythingI also tried to update the computer using the same pen drive that I use too install the windows, but it gives me the error: 0xc1900101 - 0x20017. My computer is a Lenovo Y700-15ISKMy BIOS version is CDCN54WW.Something I think it's weird, on BIOS my Windows Boot Manager is the HD WDC, even tho i'm booting with the SSD
