Jumpy TV and sound in Media Center after video driver install

Q: Jumpy TV and sound in Media Center after video driver install

Have recently un-installed my ATI Radeon x1300 video driver because it caused endless problems and re-installed the NVIDIA GeForce 6150 LE that my computer (Dell C521, Vista Ultimate 64-bit) originally came with, plus a recommended NVIDIA update. And, by the way, I use an ATI Theater 650 Pro card, 32 bit version with Media Center.

Problem: old TV recordings (from the ATI Radeon days) work perfectly. With new recordings, as well as live TV, the pictures and sound jump from one frozen 1-2 second episode to the next. Sound the same thing. Is there a setting in the NVIDIA control panel, that could fix this, or is it something else??

Thank you in advance for your help.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello everyone, I have a problem that is driving me crazy. I am able to access all my channels when viewing them on my Windows 7 laptop using Media Center. When I hook up a HDMI cable to the laptop and connect it to my TV I get the following error.."display driver error the video playback device does not support playback of protected content". I have updated the video card drivers and this issue still persists. Does anyone have any ideas to solve this. I am using a HDHomerun Prime and this is the only way I have to watch live TV on my TV. Thanks in advance for everyone's help

A:Windows Media Center display driver error the video playback device does not support

"display driver error the video playback device does not support playback of protected content"

Infers the content/media that you are playing is protected and/or the HDCP handshake is not taking place. This is likely a hardware issue. The video chipset (ie: HDMI port) or the TV does not support HDCP.

Try viewing a different channel or content.

I uninstalled several dvd conversion programmes on the 18 dec 08, They did not work and then installed one that did. After this my pc ran very slow, sound from online bbc radio was distorted and online videos would not play without jumping, firefox was very slow to load in fact any programme i tried to load was very slow and i occasionally had a crash. I tried cc cleaner, norton and several other registry cleaners but other than telling me that i had a problem and saying they had been fixed, the problem remained. I also uninstalled as many programmes as i could including itunes, google earth etc.etc. I cannot play itunes without distortion. I reset to an earlier date but this was on the 18th and could not go back further. My pc is an Acer Aspire 1640z with xphome and service pack 3. It's time to replace it but I would like to keep it going a little longer. I am reluctant to do a system restore as I'm not too savvy. Can anybody suggest a solution that a none too technical person like me, could try?

Trimming down that bloated Startup directory might help:

Click Start > Run > type msconfig

Select the Startup tab.

Other than Symantec/Norton, almost all items can be unchecked.
Reboot the computer.

After rebooting, when the small System Configuration Utility window appears, ignore the message. Put a check mark in that window, then click OK.

I have a HP Media Center PC m7160n. It shows Legacy Audio Drivers along with other sound drivers. The sound works on everything except live and recorded tv. I have tried to hook up the cable box with the media center and it works (with sound until the setup asks for an "IR Control Cable." I tried the IR blaster (Virtual IR Cable) but it only works with Vista (I am running XP, SP3.) Is there a virtual IR Control Cable (software) for XP? If not, can you help me figure this out? I have been through all the setting, there is nothing muted. I have adjusted the advanced controls like hardware accerelation and sample rate conversion quality to every possible alternative and I still get nothing. In the UK, running Windows Media Center Edition Version 2002 with Service Pack 3 installed.

When I start the media centre thing and try the live tv, which has worked previously, the little tv screen in the bottom left corner starts but then locks up with 'video error' reported. This completely locks the media software and I have to use crtl-alt-del to get out of it.

The patches on Microsoft's site won't load and I can't find any advice anywhere else. Seem to remember that the error, which is quite old now, started after I downloaded some updates, ages ago.

Any help appreciated otherwise I'm tempted to reload everything from scratch (or buy a tv ha ha!).

Recently I've started having problems with video playback in media center.
I've tried different sources (USB HDD and SATA HDD) with the same result; the video suffers from horrible stutter. The audio is OK though.
Playback in media player is OK, but has poor sound quality instead (distorted).
VLC player is all good except scaling issues.

Is it possible to adjust buffering in media center, since that obviously seems to be the issue.

Note: It used to be good, but suddenly it has become an issue. Maybe a silent update to windows has done something.
I have disabled almost all windows features, like ready boost, indexing etc - no improvement

Was wondering if anybody else had the problem I'm having. Just bought Acer x1200 miniPC. Here are the specs

Athlon 4850e 64x2
3GB ram
320Gb HD
Came with HDMI built onto MB (Nvidia Geforce 8200) opted to go with PCI-E ATI Raddeon 4550 with HDMI because Nvidia would not scale to fit screen.
Running Windows 7 Build 7264 32-bit

The problem I am having is I have alot of HD movies in mkv format and pretty much all of them play except for the higher bitrate 1080p movies.
They will play fine in MPC but will become pixelated and choppy when playing in Windows Media Player or Media Center. I like the media center because its easier for me to search and play movies with the remote.

I have tried the Shark codec pack, I tried VLC and also PowerDVD. What's wierd is that in order for it to work in MPC I had to use and older version of K-lite codec pack. If I use a recent pack (like from the last couple of months) then it will also be pixelated in MPC.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Media Center sound not working

Check to see how your audio device is configured
Right click the Speaker in the tray next to the clock, then select playback devices. Highlight the device with the green check mark. Then click configure. If it is not configured for 2 Channel, try setting it for 2 Channel and try Media Center. I have been having this problem and this makes Media center work although everything else only plays in 2 CH.

I have Asus 4550 video card
The drivers are crashing in MCE very frequently ( Black screen and then BSOD and instant reboot so I can't even read the error) I tried driver that was optional in W7 update, Catalyst 8.12, 9.1 and W7 beta - they all behave the same way

Any ideas ?

A:ATI driver crashing in Media Center

When I first installed Win7 on my wife's HTPC which has an ATI X1400, the Win7 optional update was not available. I searched around the Internet and came up with six ATI driver sets that might work. ATI does not directly support the X1400 because it's supposed to be a video controller for a laptop and they want the laptop maker to support it. In my case, this is not a laptop, but a Shuttle X100 mini-PC. It's not a net-PC, just a rather small PC the size of a hardbound book. Shuttle did have a version of Catalyst for XP, however, it didn't work well in Win7. I tried most of the others I found and the results were poor. When that Microsoft optional ATI driver came out, I tried it and it worked very well.

In your case, try searching around as I did for different versions of Catalyst and see if you can find one Win7 likes.

In the end, I had to blow away the Win7 installation and install fresh, only installing the optional ATI driver for Win7. Then the system worked very well. What also helped was excluding the RecordedTV Library from the virus scanner.

Just installed vista x64 SP1 with all latest updates, installed latest Shark codecs and K-lite codecs.
Have no problem playing video files in Media player, but the same video files are not properly played in MediaCenter. They blink from time to time. It looks like a problem with codec, but after installing Shark and K-lite codec packs the problem still the same.
May be Media center gets different codec. How do I change it?
Any idea?

My second question is:
How do you add extra programs to Media center in vista x64?
In XP MCE 2005 you could just drag desired program to the start button and prop it there and it would end up in MCE.
It doesn't allow to the same in Vista MCE.
If you drag the program to start button it will open MCE, but you won't find the added program in MCE.
Could you help?

I just built a new system using the Sony BDU-X10S blu-ray player. Blu-Ray plays fine using the PowerDVD Ultra software. However, if I try to play a plain DVD using PowerDVD Ultra or Windows Media Player, I get a message that my resolution needs to be lower in order to play the DVD due to copy protection (PowerDVD Ultra), or just that my resolution needs to be lower (Windows Media). If I try to play the DVD in Media Center, when the DVD starts playing, I get totally scrambled lines as if the refresh rate is incorrect (which I suspect it is).

I can set the resolution to 1980x1080 and down to 1024x768, but no lower. I can set it to 1080i, but not 768p.

This PC is hooked up to a Philips 1080i CRT television using the RGB outputs from an nVidia 8600GTS 512MB card.

Any ideas on how I can get the DVD to work? I had it working for a brief 10 minutes using Media Center when I first started, but I've obviously botched something up.

There are no problems playing downloaded video, internet TV, or HDTV via PCI tuner

Any suggestions?

A:Windows Media Center Video Error

First undo any other application as being the default player, eg: Divx, ITunes, RealPlayer, Quicktime, VLC Player......
 etc  etc.
search your documents find Videos and delete or move ones you do not wish to be displayed in windows media centres library.
Remember Windows Media Center runs off the MEDIA PLAYER LISTINGS so do it from there. open Videos in MEDIA PLAYER LIBRARY. be sure to remove any DIVX Videos and put them in a seperate location, even though MEDIA PLAYER will play them where as WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER does not have the codec, and will have trouble creating thumbnails.
Some may be experiencing a problem when going into WINDOWS MEDIA CENTER/ VIDEO LIBRARY. you will most probably see it shutdown saying it has stopped working and is trying to find a solution...well it won't it will only restart media centre again and the same thing occurs, just cancel the solution message.
You have to choose whether or not you like MEDIA PLAYER OR MEDIA CENTER for your video files, i have a few divx files and vob files and avi and mpeg movies on my PC and found especially if i removed the divx, and Vob Files out of the MEDIA PLAYER / VIDEOS folder it works fine, i just use Media Player to play Divx in the MEDIA PLAYER LIBRARY.
I have opened the Windows Media Center after doing this and MEDIA CENTERS VIDEO LIBRARY works fine with Mpeg, and Avi and Quicktime.

Does anyone know an easier way to switch video inputs in Media Center? I'm running an HP Quad core with Nvidea TV tuner. The computer has 2 separate video inputs for either s-vhs or composite video. In order to switch from the tv tuner to a video input, or from video 1 to video 2, you have to go through multiple screens and spend 5 minutes reconfiguring the card. Nvidea was of no help. Their answer? "We just make the chips, we don't write the software. Contact HP." HP doesn't have the slightest idea how their product works (or doesn't) and blames everything on Microsoft.

Anyway, I'm trying to find something that will let me access the video inputs without using media center. Gotta say that this HP is easily the worst computer I have ever owned, and I've owned a LOT of computers!

I tried this on a forum specific to Media Center and got 0 responses, so I'm going out on a limb here, but figured I'd ask.

What happens is I can watch Live TV just fine, if I pause the tv then resume it works fine, until I decide to fast foward or rewind. Once I hit play again (same thing happens with >>| ) the video locks and the audio goes on for about 1 second, then the audio stops, and the video goes back to playing. The fix is to hit Stop, and then select Resume. But that isn't very convienient, and its unacceptable.

On my search of the other forum (thegreenbutton.com) I came up with one guy that had a similar problem and the same "fix", and a suggestion was that Nero had taken over the video decoder. I have Nero, so I downloaded and installed the util to check the decoder status, and none were set to preferred. So I set it to InterVideo Video Decoder (ivimcevx.ax which was compatable with MP10 and MCE. But the problem still exists.

Anyone else have any ideas?

However, when I try to play this new dvd I notice that nothing is written on the DVD? I even takes vista a very long time to recognise the DVD...
Does anybody know why this is happening?

another window will open
#4 type in (sfc /scannow ) then press enter ( notice the space between the (sfc & /)
now a scan will start , have your (Windows XP software disk ready ) your pc may ask for this disc when it starts or during the scan( so you must sit with the pc while this scan functions ) , if it does then incert the cd into one of your cd/rom/player's , your pc will then reconnize it and continue , you will then have to minimize the splash screen for the cd to see the scan , when the scan is finished you will need to close the cd and all open windows , then remove the cd

He suggested tripling it - since i have a 320 gig HD I increased the size to 16 gig.
Now the live TV functions perfectly.

I added Media Center feature and tried to play VOB video. I double clicked the file and the Windows Media Player said there is no video in the library. I added it to the library but still no avail. What could be wrong with this W8 or add-on WMC?

Hi there
Not quite an answer to your question but a get around.

Download VLC (Free) from videolan -- plays almost every known Video (And Audio) codec in the known universe. Excellent FREE player.

VideoLAN - Official page for VLC media player, the Open Source video framework!

Forget Windows MC if I were you.

A week ago I was downgrading the video card in my HTPC from a Radeon HD 4870 to HD4850 to use the 4870 in a crossfire setup in a gaming pc. After installing the HD4850 in the HTPC it started freezing during while using Media Center- especially during video playback or live tv viewing. I have Hauppage 2250 and 950Q
tv tuner cards installed though at the moment they are removed so I can try to isolate the issue. After switching back to the original HD4870 and doing a fresh install of Win7 on a new hard drive the computer still freezes during video playback. I just learned about this forum, so I am hoping someone can help me out. I've attached my BSOD files below. Thanks!

Windows 7 Ultimate x64 installed OEM version on a home built HTPC.
The hardware is 3 years old. I reinstalled the OS 2 days ago on a new hard drive .

Without digging through all that debug info it would be much easier if you just described the problem. I'm guessing it's codec related without digging through that mass of debug info.

Hope someone can help, I've been unable to figure this one out. I've got a HP computer that has Windows Media Center Edition installed. My problem is as follows. When viewing videos (wmv, avi, mpeg, etc.) using the Media Center, I'm able to view them full screen, small screen, whatever. But when I try to view them using Window Media Player, the image doesn't fit the screen or the Player. By this, I mean, it looks as if it is playing full screen, but I'm only able to view the upper corner of the video or the middle section of the video. It seems stretched out or at a higher resolution than the player window. I've tried adjusting the video size, screen size, screen to fit video, video to fit screen. It doen't work in any of these senarios. Even watching streaming video online doesn't play at the proper size. Any suggestions or help? I don't know what to try next...

Vista Home Premium SP2
In the past, I have used WMC to record some television programs. It's been many months (perhaps over a year) since I've used WMC, but tonight I went back to view some of those old recorded programs. I found that WMC will display the videos' information correctly and will play the audio of the videos correctly, but the video itself is simply a black screen. I tried some of the sample videos that are loaded with WMC and they too will play the audio but not the video.

I suspect there's a codec issue here, but need help understanding what to do.

Possible related issues: Not sure it these are related, but there are 2 other issues I am aware of. First, my browser will not play embeded video (audio yes but video is black just like WMC). I can view YouTube clips from the main site, but never embedded video. Second, the most recent security update for .NET 1.1 SP1 will not install. I just get an error code 643.

One last note, I did upgrade my video card a year ago and can't remember whether I ever used WMC after that change. Could the problem be related to this?

Can you help?

A:Media Center video not playing correctly

Ok this one has me stumped! I Bought a TV Tuner card (Asus PH3-100) I have been trying several different PVR software to see what i like best, i started with the the software that comes with the tuner, it was horrible, so then i tried Media center and i liked it, but the files were just huge so i tried a few more and didn't like them either and decided to go back to Media Center but now when i go to Live TV the video is grey, i uninstalled and deleted both my video card drivers and codecs and then re-installed, still grey. Anyone have any ideas or do they alteast know which codec media center uses? My system is Vista 64bit.

My Fios tv plan is up for renewal and am planning on cancelling it and setting up a media center pc. I have an older pentuim 4 pc with 2 GBs of ram and would like to use that. I have a tv tuner picked out and now just need to decide on a graphics card. It needs to be under $30, have HDMI out and be quiet. The output will be going to a 42" HD Tv.
Any thoughts on good video cards? Also, on a similar note, any ideas for free internet video services?

A:Advise on video card for media center pc

Short of used your chances of finding a card with HDMI out for that low are next to zero. Would help to know what kind of slot is on the motherboard, as if it is AGP then the chances drop to less than zero.

Hi all...have you guys experienced this? Even when turned all the way up, the video playback is great, but the audio is simply too low. Virtually every time. I installed some x64 codecs, but to no avail.

The same happens on my 2nd T60p which runs Vista Ultimate 32-bit. I use the VideoLAN player, which plays back almost anything, and I also am the proud owner of a license for PowerDVD Ultra, Deluxe version. No audio problems there. I have installed Service Pack 1 on both Ultimate x64, as well as x86, and the issue is the exactly the same.

Am I overlooking a small thing, such as not putting a checkmark in the right place? Is there some other kind of workaround?

Thanks all!

A:Media Center works great, but sound is usually LOW!?

I know this is prolly a dumb question but have you gone into control panel and made sure your speaker setup is correct (5.1 or 7.1 etc) and checked the volume levels? I know it sounds silly but I've seen it happen a hundred times.
