Preferred Solution: Update failed (error: 3)An error occurred while checking for updates:

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Just uninstall Chrome then install it directly to the destination you want it installed instead of moving it post installation.

Hey everybody!

I'm in the process of overhauling our old family computer to run games and not much else (and not high-end ones, either).  I've removed bloatware, slimmed down the program list, updated all the drivers, etc.  Then I ran into a snag.  Windows Update won't progress past the "Checking for updates" phase and actually install anything.  It last updated in May 2015.

From following the advice over at the Microsoft Support area regarding Windows Update not working, I came up with two error codes: 0x80070057 and 0x80080005.  A search of these codes led me to this page (not advertising here, just full disclosure on how I've tried to solve my problem):  https://www.techjunkie.com/fix-error-0x80070057/

Running sfc /scannow gave me the error message of "Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log."  I couldn't open the CBS.log, so I moved on to the next step.

So... have you removed all of the updates and tried again, as a troubleshooting step? This would be a start, but only do so when you are not going to be browsing around. Until the updates are installed again, this computer will be risky to use due to the outstanding number of vulnerabilities over the past year-and-a-half. RESOLUTION
Use the following steps to resolve this behavior: 1. First, verify the proper configuration for the spelling checker. On the Outlook Tools menu, click Options. On the Spelling tab, make sure "Always suggest replacements for misspelled words" and "Always check spelling before sending" are checked.
2. If General Options are not available on the Spelling tab, quit Outlook. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.

Window Update failing error code 800736B3

I have followed the SFC, update readiness, and clean boot procedures listed in the thread I linked above. I believe I have a SIMILAR issue (not the same).

Can anyone give me a light in the proper direction?

SFC found nothing, readiness tool ran and installed hotfix but did not fix issue. I also tried to install updates 1 at a time, to not avail, as well as the clean boot.

Based on my checksur log, I have the following:

I just saw the new Client System Update utility for my E6500, downloaded, and installed it on Win7 x64. I've been talking about Dell creating such a util for years and finally Dell did.

However, it does not work. After I press the Check for updates button, after a bit it comes back with "Check for updates failed" and the GUI-U15 error in the logs. I tried many times, including after a reboot. Also, the app just disappears (probably crashes silently) when I go to Advanced->system details.

Any ideas? I was excited to spread the word around about it but can't as it doesn't work at all.

A:Failed to save settings. Error occurred loading a configuration file. Help!

Hi, you could try a system restore. If this fails or is not available try this. Desktop items are stored in a cache, this can become corrupted causing what you see. To fix right click on the taskbar and select Task manager. When Task Manager opens under the Applications tab click on "new Task" type:- explorer.exe press ok. Your desktop should repopulate. At this time reboot your computer. If all is well then the problem is fixed if not:-

Repeat the task manager (as above) and new explorer.exe then follow this:-

Go to Start all programs accessories and right click on command prompt select ?run as administrator?

At the prompt type:- taskkill /im explorer.exe /f press enter
(Your desktop will go blank)

Now type each line and press enter after each line.
Note the spaces.

CD %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local

attrib -h IconCache.db

del IconCache.db

Shutdown /r

Can someone please help me on this problem?

I have this message on this laptop once windows has loaded.

'Failed to save setting. An error occurred loading a configuration file: unable to open file'C:\users\.....etc...'

Apparently whilst web browsing something occured and on reboot this message appears and the profile doesn't load properly user documents and software not there etc..

Within the start menu the list of program folders are there but the folders are empty. Looking through the c drive and finding my way to the programs the stuff is there.

I created a new admin user to see what that does. The folders are still empty.

This is a windows 7 HP laptop. It also doesn't have a cd disc drive or a window disk apparently.

Many thanks in advance.

"This is a windows 7 HP laptop. It also doesn't have a cd disc drive or a window disk apparently."

If it has no CD drive it is most likely a "netbook" & not a laptop.
Try "rolling back" the system to an earlier date using System Restore:
Click Start > Run...........
Type rstrui in the run box, then click 'OK'

Hi all, I'm a bit of a noob and this is my first post here. Here's my problem:

I have an Acer Travelmate 6293 and have been dual-booting XP and 7 (on separate partitions) for about a year. Suddenly today, when I tried to boot up my laptop into XP, I got a BSOD with the error message 'UNBOOTABLE_PARTITION' or something along those lines. So then I restarted my laptop, and managed to get into the 7 Built-In Recovery Partition. So I went into that and selected Startup Repair. When it said it was completed, I proceeded to restart my laptop and I was greeted by a message: 'A disk read error has occurred. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to restart.' Again, I did this and when it restarts it shows the same message. I then rebooted and inserted my Windows 7 Disk and went into Repair Your Computer. However, when it searches for a Windows installation, it finds no Operating System and I am prompted to Load Drivers, so obviously I can't Restore your computer using a system image that you created earlier. So I restarted my computer, and booted up again from the Windows 7 Disk. On the language screen, I opened up a Command Prompt using a shortcut which I found on the internet (ALT + F10 IIRC). I then typed in diskpart, and then list volume. This is what comes up...

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Also...

Open Event Viewer
click on the Windows logs entry in the left pane to expand it.
Now click on the Application entry - wait while it loads.
Click on 'File' in the menu bar and select Save...
Save the file as Appevt.evtx
Repeat for the System log
then zip both, and upload them.

Hi,
I have been having some recurring problems with the attempts to install some automatic windows updates.

Security Update for Microsoft Office Acess 2007
Security Update for Microsoft Office Outlook Junk Email Filter

I am not able to install these updates, maybe any other updates in general. After attempting the install the following install window says, "Windows Update encountered an unknown error." Next to it an error code 80070643. Microsoft provides a solution to the problem, by re-installing Microsoft NET. Framework. They also provide a link to the program NET. I followed Microsoft's instructions to solve the issue, though I've been put at a standstill. I have used the NET. Framework Cleanup tool to uninstall NET. Framework and it's components (states that it uninstalls all versions, 1.1 SP1 1.1, 2.0, 3.0, 3.5.) Then afterwards instructed to reinstall NET. I start with 3.5, then as the installation starts it says that to contiunue installation I must turn off or on windows features in the Control Panel. I do so and turn off all Windows features. Then continue and it again states to turn off features in the Control Panel.

As the title says, I have problems with Windows Update. I tried some fixes like: Reset_Reregister_Windows_Update_Components, Reset_Windows_Update_History, MicrosoftFixit50362 (which is a Microsoft Installer Fixer that couldn't install PowerShell), MicrosoftFixit50202. But what I really need is installing .NET Framework 4. I tried forcing it to install, installing it step by step, but it couldn't go further than .NET Framework 3.5. I need that Framework, the other updates don't really matter. And the interesting thing is that my antivirus doesn't say that Windows is not up-to-date, which is not normal, in ESET Smart Security, if Windows is not up-to-date.
If specs matter:

A:Windows Update stuck at Checking for Updates and can't install Updates manually

Hi antoniu200:

Many other Vista users have reported that Windows Update seems to get stuck at "Checking for updates..." for long periods of time, and this problem dates back to the August 2015 Patch Tuesday updates - see my screenshots in ScousaJAY's thread windows update just seems to hang while checking in the VistaForums. This month's December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates required a full hour on my machine before it finished the  "Checking for updates..." phase and finally presented a list of available updates, so you might want to try running a manual Windows Update and leaving your computer alone for an hour or so to see if it eventually runs to completion.

You might also want to read Nikilet's recent thread Updates were not configured correctly in that same forum.  Some Vista users, including myself, received an error message this month stating "Updates were not configured correctly. Reverting changes. Please do not turn off your computer" when they tried to install the December 2015 Patch Tuesday updates.  Six updates for the Vista OS and one cumulative update for IE9 were marked as "Failed" on my machine after Windows forced an automatic rollback and re-boot of my machine.  I re-ran Windows Update today and all Important updates that failed yesterday eventually installed successfully ("Checking for updates..." still took about one hour and I declined one Recommended update KB3112148 for Vista and one Optional update KB3106614 for Silver... It was working like a charm with these two together, but one day, I turned my computer on, and chose "Windows 7" as the boot option. The boot screen loaded fine, but then, I got to the logon screen, and it was saying "Please wait.." It said that it was configuring Windows, but then, it says "An error occurred while installing updates, reverting changes.". I just waited for 2 hours, and guess what? Bam. It got into a loop. I had to turn it off with the physical button, and tried to load in Linux Mint. It worked perfectly. I tried to go to Windows' Safe mode, and it didn't work. It got to the loading drivers thingy, and froze after it "loaded" the drivers, and a weird line appeared on the top of the screen.. Is it a virus, or did I screw something up? By the way, I'm using Mint to write this.

A:"An error occurred while installing updates, reverting changes."

Do you have a backup image of the Windows partition? If so I would restore from that image and turn automatic updates off. The more stuff you have booting off one physical HD the more hassle when stuff goes wrong. In the old MBR days I had a 486 with a SCSI and an EIDE drive running Dos, Windows 3.0, OS/2 and Linux with several custom kernels. First it booted to Boot Magic, then if you selected Red Hat it loaded the Grub menu.

I juggled all that with no image backup program. It is much easier if you have image backups to bail you out. There are quite a few excellent free ones. These days the main fly in the ointment is GPT and if the Linux ones that say they support GPT really do in practice when you start doing multiple OS things.

Is your HD GPT based or MBR?

We upgraded our Oracle Application Testing Suite (OATS) to 12.5.0.2 which is supposed to work with Internet Explorer 11. This is on a Windows 2008 R2 SP1 server. Oracle says this error is an Internet Explorer 11 issue.  We have two users who are
getting this error and several users who are NOT getting the error when logging into OATS - Test Manager.  Everyone can log into OATS - Admin.  Logically, you would assume that if they can lot into Admin that they should be able to log into Test
Manager.  We just can't figure out why and need some ideas on things to try.  We do not use LDAP in OATS - it is not turned on as it is a new feature in OATS.  We were told that our problems running Open Script was because OATS needed
to be updated in order to work with Internet Explorer 11.  Does anyone know how to fix this login problem?

A:Failed updates error code 80070490

Hi Welshwizard,

The error does indeed say that the file managing Windows Updates, the file that contains all relevant data as to what updates are installed, when they were installed etc, has been corrupted.

As I don't know what instructions you were given by them;

1.
Open up an elevated administrator Command prompt.
Run this command:
sfc /scannow
Let us know the results.

2.
Insert the Installation DVD.
Reboot the machine > Run the automatic repair.

3.
Boot the machien into Safemode with Networking, see what the updates says.

Help is required here with a number of symptoms and issues on my Dell Latitude D610, with a XP Professional operating system. Here is a list of items to think about:
1. Slow and non-responsive start up.
2. Error message "SVHhost.exe application error. Instruction at 0xffbaddll referenced memory can't be written."
3. Cannot update Adobe- "update failed" message.
4. Cannot update AVG Freeware- "update failed" message.
5. Cannot update Java-Update failed message.

I have searched the forums for similar issues and found none like this. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

So I casually installed some updates with Windows Update. Several updates failed, I restarted computer as prompted.
Next thing I know I get bombarded with 30 or more pop-ups telling me things like; "The cordinal 282 could not be located in the dynamic link library iertutil.dll" among other similar messages.

Most programs wont open anymore, chrome starts up but it wont connect anywhere.
To make it extra odd; the only reason I can type this message here is because Firefox still works perfect.

Not sure what to do, I've tried the following.
1. Scf /scannow - Found some corrupt DLL files, restarted and problem persists.

2. Manually uninstall all the updates that I installed today, I managed to delete all except two of them...

3. Tried uninstalling those updates using CMD with wusa command, no success. All I get is this error message; "Installer encountered an error: 0x8007371c".

4. I should mention that I do not have System Restore or Backup activated...

The "cordinal 282" message shows up like shown in the attachment but several times with different programs.

EDIT: Added CBS.log!!

zephychan,

Are you having problems with Windows Update also?

Please do the following:
Downloading Farbar Service Scanner

Save to the Desktop.

Make sure the following options are checked:Internet Services
Windows Firewall
System Restore
Security Center
Windows Update
Windows Defender
Press: Scan

FSS creates a log, FSS.txt, on the Desktop.

Please provide the FSS.txt in your reply.

Also, let's see what your system shows with the following short scan...

Please download RogueKiller:
http://tigzy.geekstogo.com/roguekiller.php

Select the 32-bit version for your system.
Click the dark-blue button to download.
Save to the Desktop.

Close all windows and browsers.
Right-click and select: Run as Administrator

At the program console, wait for the prescan to finish. (Under Status, it says: Prescan finished.)
press: SCAN

When done, a report opens on the Desktop: RKreport.txt

Please provide the RKreport.txt (Mode: Scan) in your reply.

Please follow the Windows Update Posting Instructions and post the requested data

If the file is too large (8MB compressed), remove the older CBSPersist cab files until the final file is below the limit - you can always post them separately after zipping them. (the forum doesn't allow the upload of bare CAB files, for a number of reasons)

Please also post the C:\Windows\windowsudpate.log file

We recently deployed MBAM. While most users are not having issues, there is a group of users that continuously get prompted for the Recovery key every boot up. They wont even get prompted for the PIN. we have tried:
Turning bitlocker on and off (un-encrypt & re-encrypt)
Suspend and enable. (suspend, reboot, re-enable)

TPM is on &  activated on the problematic machines. they are different models. All computers in the environment are legacy boot (BIOS) and both, but no one is set to only UEFI.

If the UEFI was the issue everyone would have this issue. BIOS is up to date on these machines. These are mainly Lenovo T430 and T460, and one Dell XPS touch screen (2016)
Sadly this is hindering some of the top people within the company. I have researched this error code with no avail. any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

Please provide this information: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f217...ns-452654.html

Although you haven't mentioned any BSOD's, the info will provide us with some details so we can try to figure this out.

In general, a machine check is related to an error that's recognized by your CPU and reported to Windows. There's not usually much information in the error reports so we have to fiddle around trying to figure it out.

Most often these are either hardware problems (something's busted) or compatibility issues (either software or hardware).

Hello and welcome to the Vista Forums!

It is not .net Framework that you need, but the Visual C++ Runtimes, in particular the 2005 ones.

? Download and install the following VC++ Redistributables in the following order: 2005; 2005 SP1; 2008; 2008 SP1, 2010

Web addresses:
1. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable Package (x86)
2. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
3. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 Redistributable Package (x86)
4. Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
Download details: Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable Package (x86)

Retry. That should solve the issue. If it does not, I shall teach you sxstrace.exe!

I turned on my PC today for the first time in maybe 6mo, slow to boot up but that's expected. Got maybe ten minutes into using it (just fine, might I add. Linked to wifi, etc) and Norton popped up needing to restart the computer. Hit restart now, ten minutes
go by, PC is still trying to shut down. Black screen but the fan is running. I shut it off completely, push the power button again, and get the disc error. Try to restart twice with CtrlAltDel but same error. Finally soft reset (or try to, no indication that
holding the power button does anything) and then got the "Error loading operating system" screen. Now depending on how I restart it (trying to boot from the BIOS menu or boot menu) I get the disc read error but eventually come back to the OS error.

Nothing can get me into the system, period. I'm doing this from a secondary non-PC device. Any help is appreciated. I can get by on software fixes but I'm completely useless with hardware so all of the quick fix tips I've vaguely read have mentioned removing
things from the actual console which I'm hoping I won't have to do.
Please help thanks
