All folder contents lost?

Q: All folder contents lost?

Well here's my current situation:

Been trying to combat some issues, my previous posts can be found Here:

While I was running my GMER scan, I started to have a huge issue with another virus. "Data Restore"

I ran MBAM to remove the virus, which I have done successfully, but now all of my desktop icons are completely gone, all my shortcuts on my bottom bar are gone, as well as the ones on my start menu. Had very important things in the folders on my desktop, and now they're all missing.

Edit: Looks like ALL of my folders in my computer are empty, or showing AS empty. However, I CAN find the files if I search for them individually, but my desktop is blank, and any folder I open is empty...

Preferred Solution: All folder contents lost?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: All folder contents lost?

OH LORD, I'm as daft as they were clever... "They" being whoever created the virus I got rid of... Made all of my files and folders to be set as Hidden. Fixed the problem myself with your helpful guide found here:

I have a slave drive (E drive for me) where I store all of my non system folders and files. Photos, doc, etc. While looking for something the other day I noticed that one of the folders that I regularly use was not accessible. It is a folder directly off the root directory. There are MANY other 'same type' folders in this root directory that seem unaffected. And while checking, I found a couple other folders that are also not accessible.
I have a lot of data potentially at risk here and I am VERY worried that it may not be recoverable. When I click on one of these problem folders, after a long pause, a message pops up asking me about formatting this drive. Of course I click no.
I right clicked on the drive letter, properties and selected check disk for errors, this prompted me to reboot so CHKDSK could work at startup.
While that was going I saw on the screen "File record segment xxxxx is unreadable"
Then "deleting an index entry from index $0 of file 25"
Wondering if there's anything else I can do to recover this section of the drive that may be in trouble. Why would one folder be fine and the next one in the list be corrupt. and then the next 5 be fine and then one not? Very strange - happened overnight too - one day working one day not. And no other changes were made to the system. The only thing I've done on this system lately is to dump photos from a digital camera onto another drive.
Any help would be appreciated.

Working on my Acer Aspire yesterday, I went to open a file in Photoshop and couldn't find the file in the folder where I knew it was located. Furthermore, none of the files previously located in that folder were there anymore either, though the folder itself was in its proper location in the file hierarchy. After searching desperately around, I finally found the missing files in an entirely different folder. That folder had always been there, but with nothing in it. What Gives? Anybody?

Hello, first I want to apologize up front if this topic has already been posted with the problem resolution as well. I have searched throughout the networking and sharing threads but was unable to find what I'm looking for...

I have two computers in my home, a Tower PC and a Laptop both running Windows 7 Home Prem 64bit. Both computers use the same usernames and passwords to log-in to each respective computer locally.
Both PC's are in the same HomeGroup using the same HomeGroup password.

I'm attempting to access the user folder on my laptop remotely from my Desktop. I'm sharing the user folder on the laptop and the permissions are as follows:
Username: Owner
HomeGroup: Read/Write
Everyone: Read/Write --->recently added 'Everyone' in the hope that I'd be able to change the contents of the remote user folder from the desktop... In this case, I'm attempting to rename a folder within the remote user directory..

--When I go to rename the folder within the remote user's folder/directory, I get the following error:

-You need permission to perform this action.
-You require permission from Administrators to make changes to this folder
--Try Again or Cancel buttons are my only choices.

So why is it that I've given read/write permission (on the laptop end) to my user folder for 'HomeGroup' and 'Everyone" but am still unable to remotely rename a folder within that shared folder? I appreciate any help or suggestions you may have to help me through this. Again, I'm... Read more

How does one display the full contents of a folder and all its subfolders in Vista?

In XP all one had to do was right-click on a folder, select Search and press Enter (typing nothing in the search box) and it would display everything in a folder and all contained subfolders.

It's frustrating as I have to use my netbook with XP when I want to search through my external hard drive rather than my spanking new Vista laptop!

If I copy something to the clipboard, then load Excel, or Word, or some other programs, the clipboard is apparently cleared because if I try to Paste nothing happens. I have to go back to the original program, select and Copy, then Paste. Why would loading a program clear the clipboard? Can I avoid that happening?

A:Lost Clipboard Contents

I found this, which applies to Word only but might be a clue as to where to start to find the fix:

"This is, most likely, being caused by a macro or a Word add-in. To verify this, simply close Word. Then copy some data from other applications so you have some in your clipboard.

Then, rather than starting Word the traditional way, click Start then Run the type winword.exe /a and click OK. This starts Word in its default install mode, ignoring any customizations or custom macros or anything in Word Startup folder.

If you can then paste from the clipboard you know that some third party add-in or some other customization is causing the problem with your clipboard.

One of the most common culprits is the Works to Word add-in. Check your Add/Remove programs section of the Control Panel and see if this is installed. If so, just uninstall it and it should clear things up."

First I'd like to say hello to all at TechSpot. HELLO.

I accidentally applied the following command at a system restore command prompt to a secondary hard disk: "D:\boot\bootsect /nt60 c:" (without the quote marks). I thought it was my DVD drive.

Now when windows boots up and I try to access the drive in Explore, Windows asks me to format the drive. When I right click properties, it doesn't show any sizes and it shows the pie graph as 100% free space.

Is there any command I can enter to reverse the above? Is there a specific switch I can use in the command that pertains to hard disks?

Any help will be greatly appreciated,

A:Lost Hard Disk Contents

Hum.. Why would a hard disk utility do anything with your DVD drive? Or were you just trying random commands?

What Windows versions are we talking about here? WIndows XP and earlier do not support Vista partitioning or boot sectors. So if the Windows that cannot acces the drive is XP, then you have to revert the boot sector back to the older format. (Use the /nt52 switch).

Hi all!
I'm using Pinnacle Studio 15, in my Win 7 laptop. I have been using it for a long time now without major problems (though sometimes it freezes and I've to restart). Now, there is a video that I have been editing for a couple of days now. However, today when I opened the same project file, there is nothing in the timeline. The project contained video clips, DVD menu, titles, transitions, photos and music files.

When I went to "My Documents\Pinnacle Studio\My Projects", I found out that there are now two folders for the same project, the other one has .(2) in the end of the file name. Also, in "My Documents\Pinnacle Studio\Render" there are also two folders for the same project, though each one has a different suffix in the file name.(One is 4.28GB, the other is 7MB)
There is only one Studio project file, as usual.

Can someone please tell me how to solve this and what could be the cause of the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Hi all,

I went to install a new video card (which hasn't worked out) that required me to install SP1a (I had SP1 in prior to this). I also updated the mobo chipset INF software as well as making my bios current. I was having some booting up problems with this card, which at one point had me enter my username and password before booting up. The old card is back in.

When trying to access System Information, I get the following:

Can't Collect Information

Failed connection to this computer. Check to see that the Winmgmt service is running.

The service is running. I've tried rebooting to see if it takes, but it hasn't to date. The session history has my computer name, Windows XP Professional and a third item, 1048032 as REMOVED. How do I go about restoring the information? Do I remove the SP1a install and revert to SP1?

Mike T.

A:Solved: Lost contents of System Information

At this point, you might consider a repair reinstallation.

There was no need whatsoever to install SP1a if you had SP1. SP1 contains the exact same thing as SP1a and includes the Java Virtual Machine. That is the only difference between them, so you actually "downgraded" by going to SP1a.

Hi to all you WLM experts out there ... with apologies if this question has been asked before.

Can anyone pls suggest a method for analysing the e-mails in a WLM folder ... eg by author, by date ...

I?ve a large folder containing approx 2000 e-mails from approx 20 colleagues ... I?d like to be able to count how many from each! And how many per day, etc ...

This would be possible by eg exporting to CSV file for analysis in eg Excel... But how to do? Or is there a better way? (PS ? I'm using WLM 2011. And I don?t have Outlook.)

Suggestions pls.

Thanks in anticipation.

A:Analysis of WLM folder contents

Display the folder within WLM (e.g. as Inbox or a subfolder of Inbox either in the Storage group or under one of the email accounts set up in WLM). Make sure there is a column shown called "From". Click on the word "From" at the top of the column to sort by name. You can count them there or move them in groups to new folders (one for each unique "From" field). In the latter case, the number of emails in each folder should display at the bottom of the main window called the "status" bar (one of the view options).

1. I have noticed that my system32 folder is adding around 92 MB every day for the last ten days, seriously depleting my HDD space.

I attach a screenshot of the contents.

Please see items 3 to 10 on the list, with a strange file name.

kindly advise how these files are suddenly created and how to get rid of them and also ensure they do not get created every day.

2. Kindly also see item no. 1 "dllcache" which has 448MB. is it possible to reclaim some space from this?

thank you very much for help.

A:system32 folder contents

The Dllcache folder contains copies of important system files and helps your system to recover from errors. You should just leave it alone.

Under Windows XP, WFP stops populating the Dllcache folder when less than (600 MB + maximum size of the page file) of space is available on the hard disk.

In fact, you shouldn't be in the system32 folder at all thinking to delete files to save space. Windows and your applications use space dynamically. If you are close to filling your drive then it's time for a new drive purchase.

Quick question...

(FYI.... I do NOT have windows 7 - thats why I am asking this question)

In "Vista" you could click on START then MYCOMPUTER then RIGHT-click on the CD Drive and a menu would come up with the option to "Explore" so you can "browse" the folders and files on the cd.

But in Windows 7... when you Right-click there is no longer the option to "Explore" - what is the equivalent to "browse" the folders and directories on the CD.

Is it just "Open" ?

(I know in Vista if you just try to double click on the CD Drive it trys to to the auto-play)

W7 machine has started doing something the past week: when I open a folder it does not let me use nor sort the contents. Instead, it starts making a bar go across the top where the folder's path is shown. Until it completes the bar across that top, I can't do anything with the folder's contents.

I suppose these are novice questions but:

1) What is it doing?

2) Why is it suddenly doing that as it had not done that with these folders before?

3) How can I stop that so that I don't have to wait and wait after I open a folder to be able to use it's contents. This is rather annoying and frustrating.

Thank you.

A:W7 Delays being Able to use Folder Contents

Its reading the folder content the bar being a progress bar. If you open the folder a second time it should be faster as it will be cached. If it taking a long time its either a very big folder, low memory/cpu time or the disk is corrupt. Check the drive for errors find cmd.exe right click choose run as admin then type chkdsk c: /f (assuming its drive c) it will say disk locked test on start say yes

I have not moved or deleted anything.
I have these sub-folders consecutively numbered; 01_FolderName, 02_FolderName, 03_ you get the idea.
A while ago, when I went to add a new sub-folder in Explorer, in the folder-tree list on the left margin, sub-folder 01_FolderName is listed as though everything is okay; however, when I clicked the main folder to display all the sub-folders on a page, sub-folder 01_ does not show up, even though it is listed as being there in the folder tree.
When I click on sub-folder 01_ in the folder tree, I get this message :

Is there software out there that can examine all folders of a specific source and all its sub-folders (nested up to 40 folders) and output the number of files and types?

A:How to examine folder contents?

Maybe not exactly what you want. But for NTFS only partitions, WizTree is very fast and shows a breakdown of files/folders contained in each folder.

Antibody Software - WizTree finds the files and folders using the most disk space on your hard drive

It's freeware.

Edit: for a visual representation of folder structure see console Tree command.

There must be something that does specifically what you request but I don't recall seeing it. I would check the freeware sites such as snapfiles, softpedia, download.com and sourceforge.net

so what you do is add a account on your current computer with the SAME user name and password ( this will give the computer pass through authentication ) then reboot the computer log on as this user and try to pull the data again...

Hello Guys,

I got a problem with my Windows Xp; I can?t hide the contents of my system32 folder (System Tasks are not coming). The contents of system32 folder are hidden (by default). And Windows hides the System drive (which is containing windows) and the following folders (which are system folders):-

My problem is this, I can hide the rest of the folders (windows and program files) and the system drive but I can?t hide the system32 folder.
(Almost 5 - 6 days before I was able to hide the system 32 folder too by the option coming in the system tasks of ?Hide the contents of this folder?)

Other than a command line form of what you need, there are no real ways to do this in Windows without a third party program such as JDirPrint or Treesize
both are free utilities with upgrade versions that support more functionality for a fee.

I use both of these on a fairly regular basis.

Recently I have been part of a virus removal team, specifically the w32/blaster worm. The primary tool we have been using is McAfee 7.0. Normally it moves the svchost.exe in the winnt\system32\wins folder to c:\quarantine. A simple delete of this file does not work and requires scanning the svchost.exe.vir file and then deleting using McAfee. Is this an ownership issue? and... is the file still locked into the operating system? I have understood it is recommended to delete this file. Who actually owns/controls this file? Can anyone explain what effect/significance of the existence of this file in the quarantine folder could be to the OS/network? My understanding of quarantine is that the file is simply being preserved so it can be recovered in the event it has important data. I havn't been able to find any documentation or specifications that say otherwise. I would happily be enlightened.

Anyone with several reg cleaners may have noticed that the only Start
Menu shortcuts that get tagged for deletion are orphans. (That's a
shortcut where the target or command line is invalid.) This makes no
sense because as you make changes to your Start Menu whole blocks
of shortcuts may be moved to new categories or subcategories, renamed,
etc. Because they still have the same path name you usually end up
with several redundant Start Menu registry entries. You could export
the Start Menu reg key to a text file and try to edit it manually, but the
job is overwhelming!

There's an endless list of apps that will compare the contents of two
directories, and show you the differences. I'm wondering if there is an
app that will compare a folder with a registry key, and show the differences
between the two. An app like this would allow you to reorder and clean up a
registry key that contains dozens or hundreds of redundant entries.

I had to change the name of my Folders.dbx file to foldersold.dbx and restart OE6 to clear up a MS problem with sending mail. Now, since I opt to keep all sent messages, the sent folder is empty..... I found that there are 2 sent items folders in the windows/application data/identities/4f703-----/microsoft/outlookexpress folder--- Sent Items and Sent Items(1)--- the Sent Items folder is loaded with kb, so I assume this is my old sent stuff-- the Sent Items(1) is almost empty--- how do I restore my sent folder?

I hate to admit this, but I can't figure out how to restore XP control panel contents to an alphabetized classic view, insted of being grouped so everything starting with "A" is in one group, with a bold heading of A, then there are spaces, and everything starting with "B" is in the next group, and so on. Sometimes I goof and clicked too many times on the "name" column heading and this happens in normal folders. I think I've gotten it back to normal by clicking on the "name" column heading a few times (it's always a pain), but I can't get that to work in control panel now. This time I was working to change from classic view to the new Category View in control panel, when there wasn't an option to do that on the left. I finally got the new catagroy view by going to tools, options, and changing general tab, Tasks, to "Show common tasks in folders", instead of "Use Windows classic Folders". That also perminantly brought back the change option on the left It affected only some things, like "My Computer" and Control Panel, but it dosen't affect directories, like the contents of C:, or sub-directories under it. This is so strange. Viewing "My Computer" give me fits too. I can't get it to show drives in letter order. It does a catagory view too.

Any ideas how all this works, especially undoing catagory view in the control panel?

A:Restoring XP folder contents to alphabetized?

Go into Control Panel, then Click VIEW. And Make Sure that you are set on TILES, then click on VIEW again and make sure that under ARRANGE ICONS BY there is nothing checked (I'm guessing that you have "SHOW IN GROUPS" checked marked by accident).

Optional: Then if that is the view you want for all folders Click TOOLS-->FOLDER OPTIONS, then click on the VIEW Tab and then click APPLY TO ALL FOLDERS

Aside from the folders that belong in my username folder (video downloads pictures), other things also appear there (Bluetooth Software, Tracing) They generally come when i add new software. why do these things end up in this folder?, where do they belong?, how can i prevent this from happening in the future?,

A:contents of my username and documents folder

Yeah, I understand what you are talking about.
I'm afraid that is how Windows Vista is, now you might be able to change the folder settings, but this is complex and will most probably have a destructive affect on your PC.

Just to let you know, that the documents folder which is called 'YourName' is basically the same as XP's 'C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\'.

First and Long!

(First time poster - long time lurker)

I was getting the "hal.dll corrupt" message every time I attempted to start in Safe Mode and after reading a number of posts decided to recover my system to fix it.

It was a success and everything is running fine. On my C: drive I now have a folder "My Back Up 07-10-21) that is 35.8 GB and contains the entire file structure (including files) of my system PRE-Recovery. After a full virus scan I went through and moved any files I needed out of this folder.

This is where I run into problems ... As far as I know I no longer need the "My Back Up" folder or any of it's contents BUT every time I try to delete it I get "Cannot delete BOOKS: Access Denied" error message . I have even tried to uncheck the "READ ONLY" box under properties and that just gives me a bunch of "Access Denied" alerts for various files .

This folder is 35.8 GB and I would love to get that space back ... any solutions? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

With work i'm constantly printing a large number of PDF files and have found that the quickest way to get them printed is to select all of the required files (in windows explorer), right click and select print. This works great except the documents don't seem to come out in any sort of order.

If anyone knows of a way that i can have the documents print out in alphabetical order could you please let me know.

A:Printing Contents of a Folder in order

Have you tried, with the PDF's in a folder. Select View> List> Arrange icons by> Name.

These past few months, i've been noticing my C drive space getting smaller and smaller even if i did not download/install anything. I did a search for folders in my C drive that's taking up a lot of space and i landed in my temp folder ( C:\Windows\Temp ). That folder is packing hard with almost 4000 files and close to 80GB. They mostly consist of .sqm and .tmp files.

So my Q is am i able to delete everything in there without actually getting any crashes, issues and whatnot? Are the files there absolutely required? What are those files?

Enough questions for today. Looking for suggestions, tips, etc.
Thanks !

A:Could Temp folder contents be deleted?

Deleting them is fine, do what I do and delete but don't empty recycle bin. Any problems after you clear the folder then you just restore the files from your bin.

I have a folder containing four Adobe PDF files. All of them are valid PDFs and are not corrupted. Size of the PDFs range from 200 MB to 500 MB. Every time I double-click this folder to access it, my system's hard drive spins for about 20-30 seconds and I get a blue screen of death or the system locks up entirely.

When I get the BSOD, I also get the following message:

This only happens with this one particular folder. My system's OS is Windows 7, 64-bit. Any insight appreciated.

A:Folder/Contents Causing BSOD?

Could be corruption in the file system. Try running a full checkdisk on the drive: in My Computer, right-click the drive, go to Properties, go to Tools, then click Check Now. Tick both "Automatically fix..." and "Scan for..." boxes and click Start. If it's the system drive, it will tell you the drive is in use and ask if you want to run the check on the next system reboot. Click OK, then reboot, and leave it to do its thing (it will probably take a while).

I apologize for posting this in the wrong section before!

Problem: User's temp folders that store recently opened PDF files gets full and has to be manually emptied so they can continue to open PDFs. Is there a script I can create to do this automatically? Maybe something the user can run on their PC when it happens?

Thanks for your suggestions.

A:VBS Script to Delete Folder's Contents...

Never mind, I got it. In case anyone is interested:
dim aweekago
dim dir

dir = "C:\Documents and Settings\jwingate\Local Settings\Temp"
aweekago = date -1

Set fso = CreateObject("Scripting.FileSystemObject")
Set fldr = fso.GetFolder(dir)
For Each file In fldr.Files
If file.datecreated < aweekago then file.delete
