Q: explorer.exe not working....{Still to do: Get a copy of explorer extracted!}

Preferred Solution: explorer.exe not working....{Still to do: Get a copy of explorer extracted!}

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: explorer.exe not working....{Still to do: Get a copy of explorer extracted!}

I can imagine not much is working right without explorer.
Did you try starting(running) explorer from the task manger and see what happens? (File>>New Task>>enter explorer.exe in run window and click ok).

Its not a cure-all but it will get things functioning from that point forward if that's the only problem.

I can't use the native Windows 8 copy/paste. Copy works, but when I paste, I get the "waiting" cursor, then get dumped to the Metro screen. So far, the only way I can move or copy things is with CFiShellToys or TeraCopy, and I installed these only after the Native Windows 8 Copy/Paste kept failing.

I've already run SFC at the command prompt, and according the the results, all is well.

I checked the Event log, and here it is.

S.C., i cannot help you with your problem, BUT testing memory (i guess memtext) is not 100 % waterproof.

I had 4 gb OCZ 1333 mhz memory (2 x 2 gb) that was tested for 72 hours in the shop and they said it was ok.

But having problems (hang-ups) with my system, i removed 1 stick and bye bye problems.

What you could do, if not already done, is remove your memory and let only 1 stick in, then see what happens.

Hey guys,

Ran into a problem recently where I can't copy & paste, or move files whatsoever, in Windows Explorer. Copy and paste works everywhere else, so its not a keyboard driver issue. I took a look at a few other forum posts on this issue, and none seem to resolve the issue.

- I went through some pretty severe computer issues until I found out I had a bad stick of RAM, as determined by Memtest86. Around the same time, there was also a windows update, and I uninstalled a huge load of software I no longer used (Although I like to think I only uninstalled what I knew).

- Tried an early restore point, and the restore point seems to be conveniently after the problem was spotted.

- I believe I'm virus free. Microsoft Security Essentials says I'm in the green, and for added measure, I ran a Malwarebytes scan.

- sfc scannow says there are no issues.

- HijackThis file is included, if thats of any help.

Thanks for any and all assistance!

Hi, all. I was thrilled to see MS finally added the "copy path" function to the ribbon. To my dismay, it has suddenly stopped working. I can't think of any significant changes I've made to my system (no clipboard extenders recently added, etc.). If I use the SHIFT+right-click copy as path shell extension it works fine.

This is sort of odd. I'm moving some folders from my laptop's internal HD to an external one (actually copy and delete, but close enough), but with one folder I can't get to first base. Just one. I haven't had a problem using the drag-and-drop method inside WE for any of the others.

It doesn't matter whether I click on the folder on the left side directory tree column or the right side "folders and file" column, Explorer still craps out, generating the subject message. It then restarts itself.

The computer is an older Gateway that is maxed out at 2 gigs of ram. I was wondering if this might be part of the problem, but I don't think so. Not when I can successfully do a multi-folder drag and drop several gigs in size.

I have tried rebooting the system to see if that made a difference; it didn't. And I've attempted the transfer with no other windows open. That didn't make a difference either.

Finally, in order to move the files onto the external drive, I opened up a DOS window and copied them over the old fashioned way. Once the folder was empty, I was able to delete it from within WE. But now, the new folder on the external drive is behaving in the same screwy fashion as the old one. The new folder has a different name from the old one but the same problem has surfaced again. If I so much as click on the new folder, WE errors out and closes. Very strange. Makes me think there's something odd about one or more files. They copied just fine, though, and deleted ... Hi guys,

As stated in the title, the 2-finger scroll function doesn't work (anymore), ONLY in the windows file explorer. It works just fine in IE, Firefox, Adobe, Office, what have you - anywhere but the file explorer.
I just noticed this recently, which must mean it is relatively new, but I can't pinpoint when it started. I think it used to happen sometimes, but probably was fixed with restarting the laptop or the touchpad program... but I was mostly using a mouse, not the pad, so I didn't pay attention much.

I have searched for solutions, but I haven't been able to find any other thread dealing with this exact problem. My apologies if it has been treated already elsewhere.

So, your suggestions are welcome.

A:Two-finger scroll not working, ONLY in explorer.exe (Win explorer)

Same problem here. Scrolling was normal everywhere except inside of Windows Explorer windows. Found a bunch of worthless info about changing cursor theme, etc, etc, etc....... I realized that I had installed a wired mouse recently, and it must have taken over some of the scrolling functions.

The solution - Go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall your old Elan (or maybe Synaptics) driver. RESTART. Go to your touchpad vendors site, or your laptop vendors site, and get the newest copy of the drivers. Reinstall. RESTART. Everything should be back to normal.

I found that you had to do the restarts in between the uninstall and reinstall, or it will not work. I am using an Elan touchpad on an Asus laptop, but I assume that this fix should work with other setups.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

Maybe I missed this here or on the Windows help file

In Windows 7 can Windows Explorer you configured so that the true URL-IE double slash for servers etc.-can be copied into the paste buffer and then pasted back into another document-for instance for linking purposes. My window seven machine shares a home network with my kids Macintosh computers and in XP I could configure the title bar show me the URL for our own resources in this peer-to-peer environment and I could send them a link. When there are many nested directories this of course is a real timesaver.

Thank you in advance.

What happens if you click on the actual url in the address bar, and right-click? If its still not there, there is a workaround.

If you click on the url in the address bar, so that its all highlighted, and then press Ctrl-C. Then, in your email, either right-click inside the box where you normaly type your message and select paste, or press Ctrl-V (make sure you click inside box with right-mouse before using Ctrl-V).

I'm using Windows XP with SP2 and Internet Explorer 6. It's been this way since it was installed, and it's a problem I've never encountered before on any other XP machine (I have a Foxconn motherboard on a home-built machine, btw. Would not recommend that brand).

The problem is that whenever I copy a URL, complete with http prefix, Internet Explorer will open a new instance, or the most recent instance, and try to load that page. If I copy a URL from the location bar of the most recent instance of IE, it simply automatically re-pastes the URL over the current URL and tries to load the page, effectively the same as clicking refresh. I like to keep several different browsers going at once for different pages and end up copying URLs a lot, so this happens quite frequently.

Is there a way to stop Windows from attempting to do this?

A long time ago, in an app, far, far away, there was an app called XTree(Gold) that would let you copy/move -only- newer files, globally so you wouldnt have to constantly answer Yes.

I hoped MS would've made this a copy/move option for only newer files/same name with 7 (or with any other OS). The "use this option for the next xx files" copies/moves even if they arent newer..

2) When the desktop is displayed, the applications bar appears to be locked for a few minutes. In fact, the icons on the system tray appear very slowly and if I click on Start, the Start menu will be displayed when the applications bar is unlocked.

3) Sometimes, the "Windows Explorer has stopped working" window is displayed.

Using the sfc /scannow command, I verified that the system is integral.
In Safe Mode I have no problems.
Now, what can I do to solve the problem?

Sorry for starting a thread on this, but from reading about my problem online it seems like a different set of circumstances causing this for each person. So here's what I can tell you.

I was going through and deleting stuff off my hard drive, trying to clear up space and get things a little more stream lined and after uninstalling a program called iLivid I got the "Windows Explorer is not Working" error. As Windows Explorer restarted itself I wasn't too worried having had this happen before. About 2 seconds after Explorer restarted I got the "Windows Explorer Is Not Working" error again, once again letting it restart itself. After it restarted itself the error popped up immediately and now seems to be an infinite loop. I tried restarting but shortly after the computer loaded up it happened again. So now I'm in Safe Mode and the computer is usable. I tried using the System Recovery which let me go back to right before iLivid was uninstalled. Upon completion I thought I had it fixed but 2 or 3 minutes after loading up it happened again. I have about 2-3 seconds between each cycle, enough to maybe open an Explorer alternative allowing me to see and open my programs while not in Safe Mode, but with the error windows constantly popping up running in normal mode is basically pointless.

I've ran the SFC and it hasn't help. Like I said above, I've tried System Recovery to no avail. I've tried fixing the registry, still nothing.

DivXMFSource.dll suggests that it is related to DivX codec, most likely generating thumbnails for some files in the root directory of that drive. It could be a corrupt library on your computer or one of media files on the hard drive.

To confirm it is the thumbnails you could try moving the files away in the command prompt (see move /? for detailed instructions) and checking if the folder opens.

Then you should try re-installing your DivX codec. If the issue persists it is most likely a corrupt media file and you will have to turn thumbnails off to access the folder.

I cannot move, copy or paste files or folders within Windows Explorer or another file management program called xplorer2. I am able to delete and write to a folder though and I can copy and paste between programs. I have Windows Vista x64.

I have run both virus and anti-spyware scans, run System File Checker, gone into safe mode and looked all over the web; but no change and no answers. I hate to have to reformat; that takes me many hours, days, and weeks of work. I have been able, however, to use a syncing program called SmartSync which was able to copy and move the folders but is not as quick and easy for quick and simple moves.

Any help would be appreciated.

Import/Export Wizard in Internet Explorer does not list the Address Book, as available in Outlook Express. I'm using XP Home and this file will be imported to Outlook Express. The
steps needed to do the transfers with a floppy is appreciated.

A:Copy Address Book From Internet Explorer

I was not even aware that Internet Explorer HAD an address book. If there is some sort of address book , I'm pretty sure it ain't part of Internet Explorer, it may be some third party plugin or toolbar managing an address book.

I am familiar with Outlook Express' address book, that file is usually stored in C:\Documents and Settings\Username Here\Application Data\Microsoft\Address Book

After much frustrations from the functions that MS left out of windows explorer in vista and having spent much time chasing the net looking for answers, to the problem of not being able to customize the toolbar as i have been able to in previous versions, i finally gave up and found xplorer2 software and installed it.
This software has finally been able to get me back to many of the old and some new features as well. It works well and haven't had any system problems with it.
This is not an add or promo for xplorer2 but an answer to many peoples queries
that i have seen on the net.
As to the people at MS for deleting many of the features and not going the way of some other programs ( and i have been using MS programs since MS WORKS 1.1
came out on floppy 5 1/4") all i can say is

Hi, jetdriver, and welcome to the forums.

I have been using xplorer2 since before it existed, in the form of it's baby brother 2explorer, but I am not sure of what functionality you are looking for in Windows Explorer....

But you're right, my main grip with Windows Explorer is that it does not support dual pane - there is a lot of other features that Nikos has packed into his magnificent app, but that is primarily what I use it for.

I've been trying to fight with this problem for a few days now, but have had no success.
it started when I noticed my computer running slow and opened task manager to see what was eating up all my processing power.  I noticed that there was a 2nd copy of explorer running that was using both a huge amount of memory and upwards of 30-40% cpu.
I've tried virus removal, and about every piece of anti-mal/adware I could find.  On one reset as things were shutting down, all of the sudden there were a bunch of browser windows almost 'under (hard to explain) my desktop that I saw for about 1 second right before my computer switched off.  Upon restarting I checked my internet history and sure enough, there were a bunch of websites I've never visited in there.  (only user of this computer, so I can verify that no one else did it).  Its a seemingly random assortment of websites, everything from Canada air, to dating websites, to eco living for today.
task manager is unable to close the 2nd explorer process, but I managed to kill it with process manager, but it comes right back.  If I suspend it, it stays down for about 15 minutes before resuming itself.  I've run AVG, adwcleaner, jrt, malwarebytes, superanti-spyware, and spybot and had no real success.  Thank you in advance for any help on this, I'm getting ready to tear my hair out

I can't copy, overwrite or delete certain files in certain locations, like the desktop. The look like they are copying or deleting but the get stuck at 0%. Also, explorer.exe sometimes uses upwards of 50% to 90% CPU while idle. This makes the system pretty unusable. I kill explorer.exe and restart it which fixes things, but it will always reoccur.
I ran SFC and it says "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."
I'm not sure how to proceed.

Hello there!

Can you please help me with my problem? When I try to transfer files from one folder to another, Windows Explorer will not respond. I can open the Task Manager and I always need to manually end-task the folders.

Any help will be really appreciated!

Thank you!

Oh, by the way. I'm using a very, very old Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2. It only has 128MB of RAM.

A:Can't Copy/Cut > Paste Files in Windows Explorer

Hello and Welcome to TSF,

What happens when you open the folder up and try dragging and dropping the files where you want them?

First of all, I am running x64 Windows 7 Ultimate RTM. The issue I am having is really annoying and only happens when I paste a file. It doesn't always happen but here's how it goes: 1. Choose any file, copy it (I use CTRL+C). 2. Paste anywhere. Sometimes it will work, sometimes it will freeze explorer.exe requiring me to restart that process so I can use folders and my start menu again. Once I have restarted explorer.exe the bug wont happen again until a reboot. So this bug happens one time when I paste a file, I restart explorer.exe and it doesn't happen again until my next startup of Windows. I have searched around for this bug and can't find anything about it, I'm thinking it's some software I have installed that isn't compatible but I have so much stuff installed I can't really figure it out, and when explorer crashes it doesn't tell me anything. I have tried using this program called TeraCopy so Windows doesn't use the built in file copy system it has but it makes no difference, when I press paste, Teracopy doesn't even come up it still crashes.

A:Windows 7 explorer copy paste crash.

Hi mupet0000, You speak of explorer.exe freezing, and you speak of it crashing.  Which is it doing? Consider trying to reproduce the behavior with another user account, or when booted into safe mode.  Also, consider affecting what components are loaded by Explorer using a program such as Autoruns or ShellExView - perhaps try disabling a few items at a time and seeing when the behavior cannot be reproduced...

I've had this problem for a while now. The explorer is not allowing me to rename, move or delete certain files. It happens mostly with .mkv files. It displays the message "The file is open in windows explorer, close and try again ", I checked the task manager, and this happens even when no instances of the file are running. I managed to delete some files using command prompt, but I really want this solved and back to normal.

This usually happens when I move files between two partitions, or delete/rename any file in those partitions.

A:Explorer not allowing file operations (cut/copy/del)

Use the software Unlocker. It helps you do the following:

If you've ever been unable to delete a file in Windows, and can't figure out what program's using it, Unlocker is the solution. Have you ever seen these Windows error messages?
Cannot delete folder: It is being used by another person or program
Cannot delete file: Access is denied
There has been a sharing violation.
The source or destination file may be in use.
The file is in use by another program or user.
Make sure the disk is not full or write-protected and that the file is not currently in use.
Unlocker can help! Simply right-click the folder or file and select Unlocker. If the folder or file is locked, a window listing of lockers will appear. Simply click Unlock All and you are done!

Download it from here: Download Unlocker 1.9.1 - FileHippo.com
Hope this helps !

I know some images you can't copy and paste, but I use to go to free clip art sites and would be able to copy and paste into Word for kids school projects. Now I can't and I have not been able to for a while now. I think it is an Internet Explorer problem, but I could be wrong. I just recently installed Service Pack 2 for Internet Explorer and still does not work. I am able to copy and paste text, but not images. Can anyone help. mom22

A:Can't copy or paste images from Internet Explorer

If you have your Microsoft Internet Explorer security set high, you may not be able to copy and paste in the PureCMS editor. You can fix this by changing one small setting.

To allow copy and paste function in PureCMS
Open Internet Explorer.

1.On the menu bar, choose Tools > Internet Options.

2.Click the Security tab.

3.Select the Internet zone and click the Custom Level button. The Security Settings window opens.

4.Scroll down to the Scripting section of Settings.

5.Under Allow paste operations via script select Enable or Prompt.

6.Click OK to close the Security Settings window.

7.Click Yes when asked if you want to change security settings for this zone.

8.Click OK again to close the Internet Options window.
