December Update on the Windows Insider Program

Q: December Update on the Windows Insider Program

Hi everyone,
Before heading off for the holidays I wanted to give a little bit of an update on how things are shaping up for Windows 10, especially since we don?t have a build for you this month. I know that some of you are disappointed that we didn?t release another build (though we know some of them escaped?.I?m looking at you 9888 & 9901?)* but now that we?ve announced our event on January 21st I can finally explain why we didn?t. We?ve been very hard at work putting together a great build for you that includes a bunch of new features and improvements. As all of those payloads came in we needed to stabilize code, fix any integration issues, and ensure all of the new UX is polished. We?re really focused on making the next build something that we hope you?ll think is awesome. In fact, just so that we have a *daily* reminder to ourselves that we want this build to be great, we even named our build branch FBL_AWESOME. Yeah, it?s a bit corny, but trust me that every Dev that checks in their code and sees that branch name gets an immediate reminder of our goal. We?re super excited to show you what we?ve been up to! Look for a follow-up blog post from us on where to tune-in to the live webcast on January 21st.

This Windows Insider thing seems to be gaining momentum

We have over 1.5 million registered Windows Insiders today which is amazing, and about 450k of you are what we consider ?highly active?. In other words, you?re really using the build day to day and putting it through its paces. In fact, Windows Insiders are using Windows 10 preview builds more actively than participants in preview/beta programs for any prior release of Windows.

Preferred Solution: December Update on the Windows Insider Program

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am using a Dell laptop and it says I am up to date, but the last update was on 11/11/15 "Cumulative Update for Windows 10 for x64-based Systems (KB31052130)". How come I never got the December 4 update, I have another laptop that I use that updated, but not on this one.

A:How do I get the latest December 4 Windows 10 update?

Cumulative updates contain all prior cumulative updates, and the December 4th didn't install for many of us easily. There is a new update today, the 8th. See if that one will install, and you will be back up to date.

My wifi suddenly stopped working on December 9 following a Windows 10 Update. Device Manager says that a working driver is installed for the device, but Network Connections says I have NO wifi device.  The airplane mode switch allows me to turn Bluetooth on and off, but has no switch for wifi.
I rolled back the Windows Updates to November, and my wifi reappeared and worked fine.  Unfortunately, after 10 minutes it vanished again.  I soon realized that WIndows Update had automatically installed the December update again and re-broken my wifi!  I repeated this cycle a few times, as there is no user interface for telling WIndows Update to not install things.
In the end, I went to Services and disabled the Windows Update Service.  Done.  Now my wifi works, and it stays fixed.
This is not a satisfying solution, as it means that I will NEVER run Windows Update again.  At least not until I turn the service back on.  But when will I know it is safe??  Do I have to try every month after each Windows 10 Update is released?  Ugh.
Help please.

Hello, Ive had some BSOD crashes saying watchdog error everytime. This all started occurring after I updated windows(the December update) and everyday I will crash at least once. I thought it was due to a game(league of legends) but I then found out it restarted while I was at work while it was just at desktop.
What I did so far
Updated anything that needs to be updated by checking my manufactories website
Updated Graphic driver on integrated and GPU
Memory Diagnostic passed
Intel diagnostic passed(BSOD the first time but passed 100% the second time same error)
Dusted out fans(no dust)

All I have left is to reapply thermal paste to my cpu and gpu but I don't want to do that yet because it will void warranty on my laptop. Ive only had it for about 1 year and a half.

Can anyone help?

Microsoft Releases Windows 7 and 8.1 Preview Update Rollups for December

Microsoft has rolled out new update rollup previews for Windows 7 and 8.1 to provide users with early access to next month?s patching cycle as per the company?s new approach that came into effect in October.

Specifically, Microsoft is no longer releasing individual patches, but rollups that include all updates for every month, and the company is giving users the chance to try out the next month's updates with so-called Security Monthly Quality Rollups available as optional.

Basically, these updates are only aimed at users who want to test in advance the company?s latest patches, but also for IT admins who need to prepare for the next Patch Tuesday cycle in their organizations. These updates are released on the third Tuesday of each month and can be downloaded from Microsoft?s Update Catalog.

A few hours ago, the company pushed this month?s preview for Windows 7 and 8.1 systems, and if you?re planning to install them, KB3197869 and KB3197875, respectively, are the ones you should be looking for.

What?s in these updates?
Individually, KB3197869 is called November 2016 Preview of Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1 and comes with improvements and bug fixes for the operating system and some of the built-in features - you can check out the full changelog in the box after the jump.

What is this strange message on blue screen? Last week I heard someone mention it on a podcast - if not for that, I would have been sure my system had been hacked! Read on ...

Have Lenovo Thinkpad W550s that was upgraded to Win 10 Pro from Win 7 Pro a few months ago. Hadn't used my computer for a few days (it was probably in sleep mode). On Tuesday eve, 15 December 2015, try to start up and see blank screen; had to hold down power button and then reboot. Here's where it gets interesting ...
I get a blue screen (not BSOD) with a message in large letters (like 10 mm high) that says something to the affect of "Don't worry, your files are still safe". The blue screen background slowly cycles between dark and light. After more than 2 minutes the screen displays a new message, I don't recall what it was. And finally my computer boots into Windows.

Sorry, I am not at my computer now, so cannot tell you what version it is currently running or what the update history is.

So what happened?

Hi everyone, I?m excited to share the news that we?re rolling out our next build update to the ?Fast? ring of the Windows Insider Program ? Build 9879! Once again this build has a ton of changes, some noteworthy new features, and a few gotchas to be aware of. It also has a number of things that YOU have influenced directly with your problem reports and suggestions. Thanks!

Getting started:

If you are new to the Windows Insider Program you may want to check out my post here from last month since this post is using some terms and concepts I first shared there. (e.g. our ?ring progression? model.)
Just like last time, this new build will come to you automatically via Windows Update, installed during your maintenance window if your PC is plugged in and on or sleeping.
If you don?t want to wait for it to download and install on its own ? you can go to PC Settings, Update and recovery, Preview builds and click the Check Now button to go get it now.
If you?re currently in the Fast ring, the build is available now. If you?re in the Slow ring, you won?t receive the build right away ? we?ll publish to Slow after we see how everything goes with the Fast ring.
This is a full build, and it will be installed as an in-place upgrade, so you?ll go through those colorful ?installing your apps? screens again. This is because your account is being re-provisioned after the upgrade.

Windows Insider Program: Frequently Asked Questions

The Windows Insider Program has been in full swing for almost a year now with countless Insiders helping shape Windows 10 as you see it today. Windows 10 is an ever-evolving operating system that relies heavily on Insiders' feedback to help shape the way it will evolve for the better. Below are some frequently asked questions about the Insider Program.

The Windows 10 Insider Program offers Windows users access to Insider Preview builds of Windows 10. Preview builds are effectively beta releases with the sole aim being for Insiders to test the build for stability, bugs, compatibility and general performance prior to the build being released to the general public.

As should be expected with beta software, Insider Preview builds can cause compatibility issues with programs (including anti virus software), drivers or hardware, damage or loss of data and network connectivity issues. With this in mind it would be advisable to not use your daily PC with an Insider build as your main operating system, but consider setting up a dual boot with your existing installation of Windows 7/8/8.1, creating a virtual machine or install on a completely separate system for testing purposes. It is also recommended to back up all of your data prior to setting up a dual boot.

The Insider Program is recommended if you:

Windows 10: Windows Insider Program participants can upgrade to the RTM build next year

Offering the latest build of Windows 10, Microsoft's upcoming operating system that is set to launch in 2015, via a special Windows Insider Program to eager beta testers is a new move on Microsoft's part, in the hopes of obtaining as much feedback as possible. With a simple click of a button, you can check for a newer build and download/install it for evaluation purposes. This allows you to be on top of the developmental process and give testers the chance to tinker with the latest improvements and features.

Microsoft has already outlined a roadmap for Windows 10's release, which is set to happen sometime between late summer or early fall of next year. But one question has come up regarding these preview builds. Will Microsoft allow testers the ability to upgrade a preview build to the RTM (final) version of Windows 10 once it becomes available? The answer is yes.

I have: Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview Evaluation copy. Build 14295.rs1_release 160318-1628
Every time I try and use Windows Update, I keep having the following errors...

No mater what I do I can not get the updates to install, in fact windows wont even let me go back to an earlier build.
Really don't want to lose all my settings, apps games, I've backed up what I can but really dreading all the customization and settings I had to tweak.

Anyway to stop the expiration? fix the updates so it works or download and install offline so i can keep all my settings and stuff?

Also tried WindowsUpdateDiagnostic and wushowhide. both didn't do anything for me. tried clearing the "C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution" and that didn't work.

Anyone know how to fix this?

Hi all, now I got a new laptop 3 days ago (Samsung NP-RC530-S05) which is an amazing machine. I really like it, and is very user-friendly. I just forgot the Rule Number One: as soon as possible you switch on your laptop for the first time prohibit windows update. So, one of these recent updates crippled my laptop. I wonder if anyone had noticed similar issues: next booting is very slow, often interrupts with the message "please select booting device or insert key", then if you can re-boot and reboot patiently you can get past the welcome screen (sometimes minutes of waiting in front of a black screen) and then no windows software works past Explorer: can't start even windows help or detect network. Fail to initialize anything with the error: failed to load Excel into memory or failed to initialize I/O error godknowswhat. The mouse also failed to work, the optical mouse did not emit light. I needed to do two system restores in safe mood and now I have to re-install a couple of things but still, only in safe mood I could restart because after system restore and the next reboot the screen remained black with the white mouse pointer in the center. Similar thing happenned once in my XP era with my first Toshiba laptop in 2003. I wrote a flaming post in a forum and I got criticized that I should not talk ill off Microsoft. So now I just want to express how deeply I am thankful to Microsoft again, and I hope all these guys are doing well, their family are happy and in good... Read more

Maybe a stupid question, but how is one's W10 licence activation affected by the Windows Insider program? Do the Insider builds use the existing licence? Is it possible to go back to the public release build cycle without a clean install?

A:Insider Program and Licence Activation?

The license is unaffected - the existing license is used.

If you want to go back to the public release cycle you have the following options:

Restore back to the backup you made before joining insider program (you really should make one).Revert to previous build (as long as you have only upgraded once). Windows 10 - Go Back to Previous Windows - Windows 10 ForumsClean install public build (10586 currently).Wait until Anniversary edition. At this point the insider and public cycles become synchronised again and you can simply leave the program. At least this happened the last 2 times for 10240 and 10586. A week or so before the public release the insiders got the (exact same) build. You can tell when this happens as the watermark disappears.

Hey guys. Before Windows 10 was released, I joined the Insider Program and upgraded to the Windows 10 Insider beta, or whatever they called it. That was around May. I had just built a new PC with an activated version of Windows 7, and I thought I should just go ahead and upgrade to the beta before I got too invested so I wouldn't risk screwing everything up after I had everything installed.

So now in December, I'm getting sick of all of these major updates, and I'd like to just opt out of the Insider program and use the normal release version. But it won't let me permanently leave. I go to the Advanced Options in Windows Update settings, and choose "Stop Insider Preview builds," and it gives me choices of times to turn it back on. When I click the link that says "Stop receiving Insider Preview builds" to permanently stop, it just takes me to some web page explaining how to do what I just did, and it won't let me opt out.

Just to clarify, I'm now on build 11082, and I did upgrade this from an activated install of Windows 7. It's not like I did a clean install from an ISO and I'm after a free key or anything. I'm really hoping I don't have to reinstall Win7 and upgrade to the normal version.

A:Can't leave Insider Program Build 11082

You're going to have to re-install a release build, such as the November update. Since you've already successfully upgraded, you can reinstall clean and it will automatically activate, just skip any requests for entering a key.

A:Insider update.

Usually takes 24-48 hours after switching ring. There is truly no rhyme or reason to the exact time MS clears you for the download. You will get 14393.0 first and then a Cumulative Update to 14393.5 if and only if you are set to the Fast ring. So be sure to check which ring you have after you get 14393.0. For me it was initially set to Release Preview.

The only update I've seen mentioned is to Build 14926 and may not yet be available to everyone in the Insider program, just as 14915 took awhile to get to those running 14905. Just requires a bit of patience.

I have been successfully updating as a Insider Win 10 since Oct 2014 with no problems. I recently did a clean install of build 11102 and it seems ok. A few slow downs and hangs but generally ok.
Recently I received notification from MS that build 14257 was available for download. I downloaded the file as always and it went through the usual prep and getting ready etc. When it rebooted to start the install I get a screen asking me to "Choose your Keyboard L/O" I choose United States and then it reverts back to "Choose an Option" I choose "continue & Exit to Win 10" and it boots back into my build 11102. I've tried this three or four times with the same result.
I have downloaded and run the MS Fit-It for upgrades to no avail. I have tried using a Local account, still does the same thing. I created an ISO TechNet and it does the same thing when trying to do a clean install.
Any ideas??
I have run DISM and SFC /scannow

A:My Insider build 11102 won't update to 14257

You can create an iso to manually clean install by extracting install.esd and converting to an iso using esd-iso tool in tutorials section.

Hi,My Sony VAIO(SVF15213SNB) currently on Win10 Home Single language version 1607 build 14388.I Just want to discontinue getting insider builds after anniversary update that comes this August 2nd .Is there a possibility to do this without losing anything from my pc ,something by doing an inplace upgrade of the rs_1 after getting that buid.If it's possible, what is the final build and version number??

I just want to get regular official builds instead of insider builds,Since too many builds and updates is using too much data which my data plan is incapable of.What should I do to get back to regular official builds after rs_1 without a risk of losing my documents, music and video .Is it okay to just stop insider builds after getting rs_1 without any further problems ?Please help me.

I have a Windows 10 Pro Insider (v.14936) and since the last update (the 14936), I do not anymore have access to my network hard drives (NAS Synology DS210j and another Thecus N2800 NAS).
Previously I had no problem accessing the NAS, I've also another computer under 10 on my network and this one i've no problems for access it. They both have the same antivirus and the same firewall settings (ESET Smart Security).
Here is the error message I get when I try to open my network drives :

I deleted the credentials stored in Windows.
In addition, following the recommendation of Microsoft support (KB912998) I checked the next local strategy was well off: "Network access: Do not allow storage of credentials or .NET Passports for network authentication"
I tried a system repair using the command "sfc / scannow" and "chkdsk / r" without any changes.
Do you have an idea to solve this problem? Is this a bug referenced in this release?
Thank you in advance for your assistance,

Today I tried to update my Windows 10 insider preview (fast) system to the latest build. During the first attempt I received a BSOD and rollback. After multiple reboots and cleanups (such as removing kaspersky) I was able to do the update again.
The update completed, since I once had the "hi" screens after login, however after a reboot I am not constantly getting the spinning white circle. (left for an hour), no desktop. This is the 2nd stage with blue background, not the initial loading windows flag. I've since rebooted a few times, but ... nothing ...
I booted a windows 10 USB to attempt to run recovery options but received a message that an update was in progress ("it looks like you started an upgrade and booted from installation media"). I was unable to revert to a previous build, and startup repair didn't help. I can get to the command line but other than copy files there's little else I can do (system is *of course* all backed up anyway to crashplan, and non system drive data looks intact in any case)
Any tips - other than a clean install? perhaps not such a bad thing after over a year of insider builds....

Hello all,
Immediately after the December 2016 updates, we started to see some serious issues with multiple services crashing on all of our workstations.  My band-aid fix for it was to change the recovery options on the below services to just keep restarting,
but I think I've tried everything else google has to offer on this. Has anyone else ran into this issue? See services below.
Multimedia class service
IP helper
Group policy client
User profile service

Hi Guys ......... I'm new to the site. I apologize if this post is in the wrong section.

Backstory: I purchased a Gateway NE56R47U shipped with Windows 8 in late 2013. I attempted UNSUCCESSFULLY to upgrade to 8.1 in December 2013 with an 0x80070004 error. Prior to this 8.1 attempt, I was receiving all the windows updates. So out of total frustration, and a lack of a technical fix, I gave up and ran the laptop as is. I researched Microsoft Community, but I never saw a solution to my problem. I ran across your site my accident, and I'm glad I did. Now with the upcoming Windows 10 free upgrade on the horizon, I NEED to upgrade to 8.1 to comply with the upgrade requirements. But first I need to get ALL the Windows 8 updates I've missed since 12/13 installed on this laptop, and upgrade to 8.1 from the Windows Store.

In the past week I've tried numerous attempts to receive the win updates with limited success, I'm able to get Office 2010 updates, but nothing concerning Windows 8. I've ran the SFC scan and the DISM tool to the degree where they both come back clean with no errors. I've ran the Microsoft (FixIt) Windows Update trouble shooter numerous times where it says it has fixed all of the errors it finds. Looking at the Windows Update log, it states the 'Window Update Agent 7.8.9200.1694 failed'. This has produced two errors (8007371C and 800703F1), from subsequent tries.

So, I haven't been able to get any 8.0 win updates to download, either automatically or m... Read more
