Q: computer slow to boot, slow response, very slow internet, fans on high - HJT log

(adding system info):
Dell M90, Vista, all updates current.
Wireless: AT&T Expresscard

Concurrent wil all this, something is resetting my trackpad settings back to default on every reboot. Solved this last summer by removing something from Logitech, but the problem is back now. Weird.

Internet MUCH slower than usual, responses sluggish on- and offline. System fans kick on within 2-3 minutes of startup. I've run all the usuals - McAfee, Ad-Aware, SpyBot, disk cleanup, and chkdsk. Hard boot after all that, then ran HijackThis:

Hello Techspot!!!!

I have had my laptop for nearly 3 years but I wouldn't deem it to be a poor performance laptop. Recently I have been getting slow internet, poor keyboard response and slow scrolling, and it is very frustrating!!! I share the BT 3 homehub with good connection speed which was checked and found fine! My housemates laptop has started having the same problem as mine and I really want to fix this issue. The internet, keyboard and scrolling speeds vary everyday but overall are slow performers. I have looked through some of the threads and have seen people posting long threads of code etc :/ Is there anyone out there who has the time and patience to help me fix this problem? It would be most appreciated!!!

Hello, I have a Dell 5558 Inspiron.  the internet is very slow to load.  My wife has a macbook pro that runs circles around my PC for web browsing.  I have tried various tricks to minimize startup functions and background apps.  is this a hardware issue that can be upgraded?  would upgrading the GPU, upgrading to SSD, or adding more RAM help?

My computer just recently has been running painfully slow. Boot up takes about 10 minutes while log in time has increased a little also. When I attempt to open my programs now, some wont open until 15 minutes later, after I already gave up on them; some don't even open at all. Internet explorer works but takes about a minute to load the homepage and loading times vary. Sometimes it loads quick, sometimes it seems like it has stopped responding. Sometimes explorer completely freezes and I get the "checking for solutions" message. I am really getting frustrated because I have ran all of my anti virus anti spyware, malware etc. I have pccillin antivirus, malwarebytes, ad-aware, and spybot search and destroy, all of which say my comp has 0 problems. Itunes seems to be extremely bad in loading because i can try for 30 min and not get it to load even after uninstalling and reinstalling. I also have cleaned out the comp using ccleaner and have defragmented. I am running low on options and don't know whats wrong this time. Please help!

Less than a week ago, I used Control Panel to disable Google Chrome automatic update checking & installations. I did this because Chrome sometimes automatically checks for available updates and ties nearly all of computer resources while some unknown process associated with Chrome occurs. I thought this was because of the automatic update checking and installing, which why I turned this off (through Scheduling Tasks, in Control Panel.)

Just a couple of hours ago, I fresh-started the computer (Windows XP, s.p.3, 2.0GHz processor, 512MB RAM, Norton Internet Security 2011, Internet Explorer 8, Firefox 7.01, Google Chrome (belief up to date, 15.0.874.121 m)), visited internet using Internet Explorer - NOT CHROME - and had not yet even opened chrome during this user session. A few minutes after the internet usage, the computer became suddenly very, very, very slow, and Norton File Insight indicated high memory usage from Google Chrome. It reported "setup.exe" as the file causing this. I clicked to see where file is this was file, and after maybe 5 or 7 minutes, a folder opened in response indicating C:....CR_2D830.tmp\setup.exe.

When the Chrome business finished, apparantly not accomplishing anything that I could tell, computer responsiveness returned to normal.

I just wonder, is my computer so affected not really well suited for Google Chrome Browser? Also, must I completely uninstall Chrome in order to make sure this unknown process regarding Chrome... Read more

For some odd reason, in the past 4 weeks, my streaming video has become VERY slow, and I do not know why. I have a high-speed cable connection, the same I have had for the past 6 months. It is slow, sound-with-stil-images and/or constantly rebuffering, and this is true with WIndows Media, Winamp, Realplayer and even Flash videos (on YouTube for example). I cannot take it anymore. Running older PC Clone 2.0 Ghz Dual CPU Pentium, 1GB Ram Win XP Home Edition system.

While navigation on Internet Explorer or Google Chrome, system runs extrememly slow and/or crashes. When using applications such as Itunes, Email, or simply opening up Word and other applications, it runs very slow and almost seems to stop. The IE7 that was on the computer had changed to an operate with add-ons off as a result of the infection. I downloaded and reinstalled IE7 and this seems to have fixed that problem for the time being. MalwareBytes and SuperAntiSpy icons dissappeared from my desktop. When trying to use them from the Start / Menu options the programs no longer worked. I reinstalled them and they appear to work fine now. However, the system still seems to run very slow over all and its performance is greatly hindered.

Next, I ran free version of SuperAntiSpyware and all it detected was a couple Adware cookies. Secondly, I ran free version of Malware Bytes Anti-Malware and it detected PUP.GamePlayLab infections located in the Registry Key: HKLM\SOFTGWARE\Microsoft\Windows.... These files were removed and quarantined by MWB. Thirdly, I ran Old Timer's TFC and then rebooted the computer and it appeared to run a little faster, but still sluggish while using IE7. So, finally, I ran ESET Free Online Scanner, and it detected "Win32/Toolbar.Babylon and Win32/TopMedia.a" virus infections. Scan took about 2 1/2 hours. I set it to search the drives/ar... Read more

Hello, all. I just joined this site, after installing HijackThis. Here are my concerns:

Despite having an up-to-date copy of McAfee Security Center running all the time on our home computer, I'm fearful that something may be up. With essentially nothing running, it frequently dogs badly. Checking out Windows Task Manager will show high CPU usage but, in the "who's getting high percentages of CPU" listing, it's almost always "System Idle". I would expect CPU usage to be really low. I'm running Windows XP Home Edition SP2.

I've done tmp file cleanups to no avail.
McAfee reports everything is fine.

I stumbled upon someone else who used HijackThis. HijackThis sounded cool, was easy to install, and use. I've pasted the contents of the HijackThis log below. If *anyone* has a suggestion or a clue as to what I could try, I'm all ears:

I'll get to that in a minute.Before we do rootkit scans and use some other tools to confirm that malware is not the problem, let's do a quick check of resources.Press <Ctrl>-<Alt>-<Del> to open Task Manager, then click on the Processes tab. Place a check next to Show processes from all users. Note the numbers at the bottom, CPU usage should be running at 0 to no more than five percent if your system is idle (no background tasks running). If that is not the case, scroll down and see if any of the processes is running at a high percentage of CPU usage. On a normal system at idle the System Idle Process should show about 98 percent, meaning nothing else is using the CPU. The next columns to the right, memory usage and peak memory usage, may also show something out of line if one process is using a large amount of memory. If you see anything showing high CPU usage or high Memory usage, make a note of it.Now, click the Performance tab. Hello,

I am experiencing a very frustrating scenario on my machine.
It started out of the blue. I have dial up still and I hardly ever
get on the internet. maybe only an occasional Google search.
It started during a period in which I had not been on the web for at least a week.
*When I click on a folder it stalls and then opens after a few seconds.
*Videos played off my hard drive stutter.
*Startup takes longer than usual.
*Basically, any task I try to perform is stalled.

I have performed the following actions:
ScanDisk
Checkdisk
Defrag
Ran Malwarebytes in Safe Mode and Standard
Ran Super Anti Spyware in Safe Mode and Standard
Ran Hijack This
I have checked programs running on Startup and cleaned that out.
I have 90GB of free space and 1GB of Ram.

I also have done in depth research into the DMA/PIO
possibility.
I am showing UDMA 5 for my HDD, and DMA for my CD/DVD.
It never displayed PIO at all anywhere. However, the symptoms
associated with a HDD reverting back to PIO match what I am seeing.
Is it possible to be in PIO mode, even though it displays DMA?

I am at a loss for what it could be...Please help...Any help would be appreciated greatly.

This may be irrelevant but when was the last time you changed the MB battery? I have had a lot of machine and still do, when the battery is dying funny things can happen. I sure looks like you have covered all the other bases!!

Hello,

Over the past couple of weeks my laptop has slowed down very much, there is constant HDD activity and internet activity, I would assume I got a virus or something from somewhere, I scanned the computer with Avast and it found nothing, so I scanned it again with McAfee and it found nothing either.I tried to remove a couple of BHO's and miscellaneous entires I found and it wiped out my browsers, I primarily use Firefox and occasionally use IE.

Norton 360 shows no viruses. When I boot up computer, programs in system tray are slow to load. Also, on first attempt only, Internet Explorer 8 takes 2-3 seconds .. after that, it loads faster. for about the last week or so i have noticed Windows is taking a lot longer to boot than usual. upwards of 4+ minutes.

i have run an AV scan, Malwarebytes Anti-Malware scan, Spybot S&D scan and cleaned up trash with CCleaner. i disabled all unnecessary services except for Avast which still runs the engine even though i disabled all the shields.

there were a few infections found which i was able to quarantine and delete.

I started with problem here: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-8/1089279-solved-video-hang-up-new.html which I think was handled well.

In the process of installing the new hardware, a couple concerning things happened. I had a tough time getting the 24 pin PSU-mb connector in and I feared damaging the connector on the mb side. I also had trouble with routing the SATA power supply cords to the hard drives, and had to pinch the connectors pretty tight against the wires they were connected to to squeeze them through parts of the frame inside. They are not squeezed in their connected position however.

But everything seemed to work great for a while. Both my new video card and PSU seemed to help my system. But after a while I started noticing things were getting slow, clicks not registering, any web browser locking up frequently. The problem got a little worse over time and now things load incredibly slow, though when they load they can run smoothly for a bit of time and then abruptly freeze again. Startup often takes a minute and shutdown can take sometimes more then 10. I often have to press the power button on the case due to a locked up program and then wait a very long time.

I checked my sensors with 2 different programs and they both show me consistently getting 2.128 volts on the 3.3 rail. I went back to my old vid card to see if the problem was the new one all along, no luck. I tried disconnecting and reconnecting all the PSU connectors, still no luck.

Hi,

This problem started a few days ago and I'm not sure what is wrong so I'm going to describe what is happening. My computer is running Windows 7 64-bit. The last thing I remember doing with the computer running fine was watching a stream from justin.tv or a youtube video, followed by a standard computer shut-down. From then on, the computer boots to the login screen at around the same speed as before, but from the login screen to showing the desktop takes over 5 minutes. The screen is black with the white cursor being able to move (my desktop background is not black), so I know my computer is not frozen. After 5-10 minutes, the desktop icons and background show up, but everything runs very slowly, from opening folders and programs. Firefox and internet explorer cannot even load a page and the program freezes.

The computer still runs fine in safe mode and I am able to access the internet and browse fine their. I have run through the suggestions from the slow computer checklist on bleeping computer. In safe mode, I have run complete scans of Malwarebytes, SUPERAntiSpyware and Avira anti-virus with no threats detected. I have also tried running scandisk in an elevated command prompt (as an admin) in safe mode, but I get the message "Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation" and the scandisk never completes. I also ran CCleaner and defraged my computer.

 Hi The computer  that is slow is a desk top tower. In a home.  it is a E machine.
 it has windows 7  professional  with service pack 1
DO KNOW :  I am very new to windows 7 and all it's features. 
When I brought this computer home  last Nov. it was lightening fast at everything! so much better than  the windows XP  it replaced, I was thrilled.  yet Now starting in  April 2015  it is as slow  or slower  as my old Windows with XP ever was  ( and partially the reason for saving my  pennies to get this windows 7 computer)...and  now I'm upset. feeling  like I have been taken.

Have run TFC and JRT  and the computer shows no signs of improvement.

Hello,
 
I was here a few months ago, with my computer/firefox running slow.
 
I've had malwarebytes anti malware  running ever since.
A couple weeks ago the computer has literally come to grinding halt.
When I start the computer it takes a couple of minutes to go from the "Starting Windows" screen to the Windows login screen.
From there it take another 3-5 minutes to boot up. I have Soluto installed and I watch all the programs that are being started during boot up and how much extra time has elapsed for everything to load.  
 
I've run spybot search and destroy,  Avast, eset, and SuperAntispyware and nothing has been detected.
All programs have a large lag time from when i dbl click the icons to start them.  They run slow, I type something and there is a delay before I see it on the screen. Also I'm always seeing the "not responding" message.

As stated in this subject. My computer is about 6 months old, recently I have been having issues with it being loud and overall very bogged down. I used Superantispyware, malwarebytes and panda virus. Please help and advise what I can do to correct the issue.

Hi there,

My computer has been running slow for few months now despite having a high speed internet connection. I have tried to fix it by having its set up changed. It didn't fix the problem. It was working fine but one day it suddenly started running slow. At first I thought it must be a problem with the servers of my network provider but that wasn't the case. I've called the cable company to check several times but they said other users were able to use internet in full speed without any problem. I noticed the problem by trying to watch videos from various websites and after this problem occurred, they started loading super, super slowly. It has gotten to a point that I can no longer watch TV shows, movies, and other videos. The only video website that works is YouTube and even that doesn't function completely normally. Only most YouTube videos work without getting stuck too much. Another thing which I must mention is that quite often the internet cuts off in midst of browsing sessions and it doesn't reconnect without restarting the computer. My computer is a Dell laptop pc with Intel core i5 processor. I suspect that maybe my LAN card has worn out and it needs to be replaced. Although, I have been told by some computer technicians to not to do so. But they weren't able to give me any solutions. So here are my questions:

Erm hi. Last night my PC was absolutely fine, and today it seems to be completely broken.

I turned the computer on today and received a "malware detected" message from Avast antivirus. I tried to move to chest/delete and the message kept popping up. I looked up NewDot malware on the internet (which is what Avast was detecting) and it said that NewDot prevents access to the internet, which seemed about right as i was having to use my laptop to access the internet as the time, because the other computer wasn't working properly. It said that i could get rid of it easily my going to Add/remove programs and uninstalling it, which i did.

After this i restarted the computer and the loading time was exceptionally slow, i thought it had frozen, but it was just taking 5-10minutes to load. When it finally did load i tried to access the internet through a number of different browsers, but none of them would load. I tried to open some other applications too, and they wouldn't load either. I went to msconfig and disabled the majority of my startup items, and then restarted the computer. Once again the loading time was slow, and no applications would start. I then tried to do a defrag, but the program didn't work. Then i tried system restore, and the application didn't load, i came back to the computer 5-10minutes later and it had loaded, but it came up with an error that said something along the lines of "system restore is unable to protect your computer, please restar... I don't know if there's an edit option on this site, but i couldnt find it.

Anyway, i've found a website dedicated to this newdot "foistware" as it is known: http://www.cexx.org/newnet.htm

It says that deleting the .dll will result in a broken internet connection. IT also mentions that sometimes uninstalling it will still leave errors in winsock.
This seems to be what has happened to me, so i'm going to try the LSP fix utility available for download on that site. The problem is that this laptop has no floppy disk drive, and i don't have a UBS storage device available.

I was just wondering, if and when i do repair the LSP problems, could that be what is causing my system to run slowly? I hope so.

This machine is on a server-based network in a nonprofit. I am the "IT person" but frankly, I am not an IT professional... I'm in charge of it simply because I have some basic "do it yourself" skills!

The machine was running very slowly for the past week, with hangs that lasted from 30 seconds to a few minutes, but always did come back. Shut down was taking over 2 minutes; restart was taking nearly 5 minutes. Programs such as MS Word 2003 opened very slowly. Our employee who uses this didn't mention all this to me until...

During an MS auto update this past Wednesday, when XP rebooted to add 11 updates, the machine hung entirely. It took 6 hours before the first update was installed, then sat another 2 hours showing "2 of 11" and "do not turn off or restart your machine."

I contacted MS and after heehawing around for a while, the person said to go ahead and do a hard shut down. It rebooted, slightly faster, and did not hang again, so last night, I was able run Ccleaner, then Spybot Search and Destroy and Malwarebytes. No malware. The machine normally runs Vipre Enterprise (which will show as SBEAgent in the log below); the Vipre log for the past three days for the machine is clean.

I also scanned the disk for errors (none found) last night. And, I changed the page file size so that its virtual memory is now 2500 to 3048.

My computer is very slow to boot up, slow to load IE home page (MSN) and very slow to open any programs. I have run Adaware, A2 anti malware and Spybot and cleaned all that I found as far as malware, spyware, etc. but to no avail. The lights almost constantly shows my hard drive is working. Any help would be appreciated. Below is my HJT log:

Hello, i'll be grateful if you could help us with a problem that we are having with our laptops at home. Let me to explain you, my wife have his own laptop at home, as I have mine laptop too, both of the computers share a wi-fi internet conection. I'm not sure of what's going on but the internet conection it's extremely slowly, sometimes when we reboot our laptops there is no internet conection. According to our ISP there's no problem with the internet conection, they said it could be something with the laptops.

Now, It's true that the two laptops are more slowly, specially my wife's laptop, it takes too long for any processes, I always take a look to the running processes and it seems like there are too much process always but I'm not sure of what is good and whats isn't.

I decided to attach The HiJack log from my wife's laptop, maybe with this you could help us to figure out what's going on.

Hello, my computer has been extremely slow on boot and my desktop has been hijacked with a message about changing it to a website. I also have a program called "error fix" showing up on my desktop and I have no idea where it came from. I've run Malware Bytes twice on the computer with numerous problems found. After running it the second time, I got a message saying I needed to run CHKDSK which I ran. Also, my internet is running very slowly and I just got a message that says "A program on your computer has corrupted your default setting for Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has reset this sietting to your original search provider, Live.Search (search.live.com). Internet will now open Search Settings, where you can change this setting or install more search providors."

This is my first time posting a question on bleeping computer. We are so thankful that you are out there to help us and not rip us off. I think my computer is infected. My desktop starts up very slowly, my internet connection is slow (it's slow in pulling up websites and some never come up). I'm getting lots of pop ups (even though pop up blocker is enabled). When I go to open the control panel, a flashlight pops up as if it is looking for it (it eventually does open but it takes a while). I had a problem at one time with a lot of POS.TMP files and followed advice from posts on this site to get rid of them. Well, my current problems started when a friend downloaded a music program. I believe it was called Soundman. When I noticed the computer acting funny, I went into the control panel and deleted it along with some other programs I found (PPC Booster, P2P Max, Ron Tool Adsoftinc, Wyzo, Eco Bar). Any help will be greatly appreciated. Hey, basically computer's been a bit slow and tried clearing some stuff and done other things, but still no luck, to make things worse internet's been a lot slow and when using either firefox and internet explorer. For example when going on youtube some videos would freeze in the middle and i would have to reload the page, and sometimes takes ages to load a page.

Hey I recently bought a new computer that is much better than my old one in stats but its not acting like it.

Windows XP
Service Pack 3
Intel Dual Core E5200
2.50GHz
2GB RAM

Now it was running ok to begin with but then the internet started having problems. It kept dropping out or fluctuating in speed and nothing seemed to fix it. It didnt happen on my old system it sat nicely at 54MB/s all the time.

Then the rest of the computer started going slow to start up so i got rid of some start up programs and desktop items which didnt seem to do much. And now ive noticed that when songs are playing in itunes they skip seconds every now and then.

Also when i click for programs to come up after i wait till everything is started up properly i have to wait a minute or two before they open. And burning DVDs has doubled in how long it takes.

Any ideas of what could be wrong, ive scanned for viruses using Avira and spyware using SUPERantispyware, ive cleaned registry using Registry easy and removed all unnecesary crap using CCleaner.

It got suggested that my computer was going slow because of AVG8 so i got rid of it and with got Avira but it slowed up again.

I recently cleaned up my "Start Up" items (this may or may not be associated with the problem I am having - may be coincidental). No viruses, Firewall at Medium security, SpySweeper in operation. 512MB RAM. XP Pro. Working on Cable Modem.

Pages are either VERY slow to load, or will not load at all. Often I must Refresh to get a desired page to show up at all. Many pages will not load at all. "We're sorry but the internet contant you selected is not currently available" message is common.

AOL loads, however slowly. IE is also slow loading the "home page". Going from either home p[age to through a link is a tedious process (including even bringing this form up).

Any ideas as to what the issue might be?

A:Slow Internet Response

First, have you tried powercycling your equipment (like your modem and your router)? Basically you would want to turn both off (if you have a router) and then turn back on your modem first (allowing it to remain on for about a minute) and then turning power back on to the router. Many times speed issues can be correctly by this simple process.

Also, if you have only been using IE then you might want to try clearing cookies/cache/etc if you haven't already. Go to your Tools menu at the top of your screen and go to Internet Options. Depending on the version of IE you have you could see different things like the option to "Delete All" or you might see separate buttons for "Delete Cookies" and "Delete Files". Either way it is a good idea to clear both of these up.

You could try downloading a different internet browser like Mozilla Firefox from getfirefox.com just to see if it's something with the program or not also.

Also, I would run some speed tests to see the speeds you are getting. Especially it might be a good idea to run a speed test while your firewall is on and to run one after you have disabled your firewall. Speed tests are available at:

Hi. I'm a new user to the forum. I found the link from Spyware Warrior. I'm currently having very slow internet access through my cable modem, and I think I might hav some spyware on my PC. I'm running Windows 95 (I know, I know - I'm going to be upgrading soon, but I'm not there yet). Anyway, I have SpyBot S&D on my PC and have run it and cleaned evrything it found. Hello,

I've recently experienced some difficulties with my Toshiba Satellite. Initially it started with a verrrry slow boot up, and then all programs constantly freeze (desktop, internet browser, Microsoft Office, start button, you name it). I ran a malware and antivirus and cleaned up the hard drive, which seemed to solve the problem, until all the same problems started up again. Re-ran the antivirus and nothing popped up, but not sure what it could be if not malware/virus. Any help at all would be GREATLY appreciated!!! I am personally limited in technical prowess, and really appreciate any wisdom or insights! THANK YOU!

Hi,
 
My laptop has been moving very slow lately. I am not sure what is going on. I have cleaned out old registry files and deleted old programs. Still nothing. I have attached a hijackthis file as well. Thanks for any help.

Please note, on the Windows 7 forum page you will see a black megaphone icon with "Announcement" printed in green in the upper left part of the page.  There you will see that No DDS, OTL, HijackThis, or ComboFix logs should be posted in this forum.
 
Please post the make and model of this computer.
 
Please download and install Speccy to provide us with information about your computer.  When the  FileHippo website opens, click on Download latest version in the upper left pane.
 
When Speccy opens you will see a screen similar to the one below.
 

 
Click on File which is outlined in red in the screen above, and then click on Publish Snapshot.
 
The following screen will appear, click on Yes.
 

 
The following screen will appear, click on Copy to Clipboard.
 

 
In your next post right click inside the Reply to Topic box, then click on Paste.  This will load a link to the Speccy log.
 
 

Please download MiniToolBox  , save it to your desktop and run it.
 
 Checkmark the following checkboxes:
 
• List last 10 Event Viewer log
• List Installed Programs
• List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
• List Minidump Files
 
 Click on Go to start the scan.  Once it is finished highlight the text, copy it and paste it in your next post.

Please help me. I am using RoadRunner connection. I am experiencing long response times. Can someone look at my HJT log.
