Preferred Solution: setting up a linux based proxy server

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Is there any way to he IE proxy settings apply via gpo when users are on the LAN and to be disabled when the laptop users are remote.
Any help on this would be greatly appreciated, as most of the laptop users need to manually change the proxy settings for getting connected to internet.

Based my research, this may not be accomplished with Group Policy.

how can i configure that, here we used a PSTN connection, using one 56 kbps external modem to telephone line, i have to configure the connection and get make connection to other windows machiens working together in the LAN, so plz Explain step by step how to do this

plz help, in present condition i used one 2000 server as netserver and use one software proxy to share that connection, i wants to substitute this with Linux...

so plz help me

A:Linux Internet Proxy Server

Assuming you already have set up the internet connection on the server..

To share the internet connection you have to set up IP masquerading. If you need proxying too, set up Squid.

Doing either of these is not trivial and explaining it would need a full-length guide which I am not goin g to write. You can search the web for those keywords for some guides and howtos.

hello all,
I'm facing problem to bootup OS installed on different drives on my rx2660 HP integrity server.
System F/w :3.01 {4739]
BMC version:5.21
MP version :F.02.17

I have 3 hard drives on my server. I created Raid 0 on all the drives as below:-
LD #1 Raid 0 146GB (dev/cciss/c0d0)
LD #2 Raid 0 73GB (dev/cciss/c0d1)
LD #3 Raid 0 73GB (dev/cciss/c0d2)
I installed Rhat5.1 on LD1(c0d0).After finish installation, i could see the RHat5.1 boot entry on the EFI boot manager and I could boot up. Then I installed RH4(c0d1) and Suse10(c0d2) on my other 2 drives. Installation was completed successsfully but when it reboot after installation complete, I can't boot up to the OS installed on other drives although the boot entry of Rhat4 and Suse 10 appears at EFI boot manager. When i select the entry(Rhat 4 or Suse 10) it says file not found.
When I boot up to Rhat5.1, installed on the 1st drive and mount c0d1 to /mnt/floppy, i could see the files that has been installed on other drives.

Then I tried installing RH4 on the same drive on different partition on LD1 (C0d0) and i can successfully multiboot.I could also install Suse10 and boot if I install on the 1st drive different partition.
I'm not sure why I cannot setup multiboot when I install the OS on separate drives. Is there anything I need to do for the EFI boot manager to detect my other drives?

Even at EFI shell, when I switched to fs3: I only can find the files installed on the 1st drive.

My Win8 Start Page apps stopped working - could not access internet. Then I noticed Dropbox couldn't get a "secure connection". But Firefox browser and my email client had no problem with the internet. After hunting around a bit, I discovered that Proxy Server was checked in the LAN Settings of Internet Options-Connections tab. I turned it off and all was well, but it came back on the next boot. I can't find anything suspicious in my autostarted programs and the built-in MS security software isn't complaining about anything.

Anybody have any ideas? I'm fresh out of things to try. Meanwhile I keep resetting the Proxy check box whenever I have to re-boot.

A:Something is setting proxy server

If you haven't tried using System Restore yet, it's pretty handy for this sort of trouble.

From the Windows 8 Start Screen, type Recovery, then click Settings, then click Recovery, and then select Open System Restore. Choose a restore point from before your proxy settings started reinventing themselves.

Hello, I use a web accelerator called ExpressLink. When I connect to the Internet the proxy server setting is getting turned on automatically even though
it is not necessary when using the accelerator. If I disable the proxy server setting, it usually gets turned on again. I do not have any ISP software
installed. I have tried setting my connection to "Never dial a connection." but as soon as the accelerator starts the proxy server setting turns on. How do I keep this from happening? I am using Windows XP Home.

A:Disabling the Proxy Server Setting

The accelerator IS the proxy. The proxy settings probably look like "localhost:8080" or something like that, right? If that's the case, you would need to disable the accelerator, which is probably not something you want to do anyway, so you will need to leave the proxy settings enabled.

I have Squid installed on a Linux box running OpenSuSE 10.3. Does anyone know of a guide for configuring it for public access. So far it works fine from inside my internal network.

Does anyone know of any other proxy server programs for linux? Thanks.

A:Setting up a public proxy server

Hum.. Why are you doing this? You do realise that you will not be able to keep this proxy "secret" (even if you use non-default ports)? There are literally thousands of machines out there doing port scans and looking for open proxies just like yours. Once found, your machine becomes a conduit for everything that needs to be hidden from law enforcement officials. (And you will be the one questioned about all that child porn, hacking attempts and spam.) You should be prepared to keep throrough logs of everything and have a fast internet connection.

Anyway, first you should find out whether it is your firewall or Squid itself that is blocking access from the internet.

For all the Squid documentation you would ever want, try the totally unthinkable www.squid.org

OK so I've pinched the old mans ancient (Like Just overclocked a PII from 266 to 456Mhz ancient) PC and am looking to install a linux based OS to use as a file server...

Thus hitting 2 birds with one stone finally checking out Linux and developing server experience in one go...

Current PC specs:
Intel P2 456Mhz
64MB RAM (Will max out the board this week)
El Cheapo LAN card (It's fairly small so I wouldn't expect it to be very quick)
Will be getting a wireless card for an ad hoc network too

I need to know what build I should run...The Computers connecting to it will be XP and Win2k
I would prefer some form of GUI

Any pointers would be appreciated...I realise the specs are pretty lousy but will get a P3 (or 4) when I start getting the hang of it...

Cheers folks

A:Linux for a newbie setting up a server

If you don't care about a gui, then something like CentOS would be best.

However, almost any linux distribution can work well as a server, and the're all pretty much the same to install.

If you want a gui, go with Ubuntu or Fedora, since you want to check out the desktop environments anyways. I prefer Ubuntu personally, but either is fine.

Once you've installed the OS, go to the package manager and search for/install the following:

-Apache (web stuff)
-Maybe mysql for database stuff
-Samba for windows sharing

Be warned that it might be a bit slow while running a gui on a P2

Hi all

We have just installed Websense Software for Internet Filtering. We now want to point all our 250+ PCs to the Proxy Server. Rather than doing this individually on each PC, I understand this can be done via Group Policy (GP). I have identified that in the UserConfig, under Windows Settings\Internet Explorer Maintenance\connection you can select Proxy Settings. Here I enable Proxy, set the Proxy IP and to use the same proxy for all addresses.
On saving and assigning the GPO to the workstation, it fails to apply the settings. However, if you manually set the options under the Tools\Connections Tab within IE6 it works fine.

We are running Server 2003 with XP Workstaions (Sp2) with IE6. All fully patched.

Anyone got any ideas!!!!!

A:Proxy Server setting via Group Policy

You can make that change in your default domain policy
under the user configuration.
It should work withou applying it to workstations.
Since you are making the change apply to users....no workstations
are needed to be specified.

Hi, this is my first post here so i hope u´ll go nice on me

My private network is configured like this, ADSL ISP -> Fedora Core server/router -> switched network to one linux workstation and my win/Suse workstation.. As i bought a nokia N95 mobile and also got a free Zyxel Wifi router from my ISP i thought that i´ll set up the wlan now. But thinks aint working as planed, ie not working at all.

i use static ip troughout my LAN, , and i connected the zyxel to the switch after my linux server , configurating it like my computers with static ip. ie, gateway as the linux router and DNS as my ISP uses. For a test to see if i got out trough the server i conf. the LANpart in the router to, since the WAN and LAN are reprecent seperat NIC this shouldnt be a problem? anyhow it didnt work, and neither did the WLAN.

i read in some article that u need to use subnet to get this to work but i have a hard time beliving that. also, is there a way i can reach the LAN trough the WiFi?, i only want it as an access point in part of the excisting LAN but thats maybe impossible with WLAN routers?
please give me some tips on configuration, my head is acheing and i cant think clearly

A:Setting up WLAN behind Linux server/router

Disable DHCP in the router and connect it you your LAN on one of its LAN ports (not WAN port). It will act as just an access point now.

Hey guys,

I've been digging through forums and sites for the past couple months now trying to find a way to help me turn my home PC into a proxy server so I may use Pandora Radio on my iPhone over public WIFI at work. Recently our corporate offices upgraded their network and in turn added a firewall which blocks many common external sites, one of which included Pandora.

I have found a temporary workaround by way of using Hotspot Shield's free VPN services, but I would like to create my own proxy server at home instead so I can avoid the constant timeouts/disconnects involved with the free service.

So far I've set up my PC to use a static IP on the network, and forwarded port 1723 to that address. I've also enabled incoming connections under adapter settings, but it just seems like I'm missing something big here. I am unable to make a connection to my home PC from my iPhone over WAN, and even if I was able to I'm not sure how to enable internet connection sharing over that connection.

Is what I would like to do at all possible or feasible? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have strange issue with Windows 8.1 x64 Pro with Media Center. Since it was upgraded from 8, there have been issues with Software Store. Despite internet connection working fine with Firefox and other applications, Store would not connect to the internet. After long investigation I found out that Proxy server setting in Control Panel -> Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN Settings must be disabled in order to get Store working again. For some reason proxy server only stays disabled for the current session, which means when the windows is rebooted it comes back enabled again. My question is how to make it stay permanently disabled, as I don't use any proxy. Thanks.

I appear to be the victim of some piece of malware or virus that has added a proxy server setting that I am unable to get rid of. The main symptoms are that I am unable to change my proxy server settings in Windows 10. It appears to use this setting http=;. The result of this is that I am unable to do searches in the omnibar of Google Chrome (just takes me to a blank page) and I can't visit certain webpages, also if I am able to do a Google search the "Search Tools" button is missing.
I looked around on the internet and have tried a few fixes, I've deleted or changed the registry entries mentioned in Philip Turner's reply here: https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/446898-can-t-disable-proxy-in-ie10?page=1
I also changed the entry mentioned here: https://fixedit.itxpress.biz/2014/10/08/unable-to-disable-windows-proxy-setting/
Making these changes allowed me to change the proxy server settings and once I change "Automatically detect settings" to on and "Use a a proxy server" to off then the issue is fixed and everything behaves normally.
The problem is, once I restart my computer the settings revert back and are again unable to be changed unless I delete/change all the above registry entries again. I'm pretty sure that whatever did this is still on my computer somewhere and I need some help finding and eliminating it. Either that, or there is still some hidden registry entry that I am unable to find.

Thanks for for your time,
I couldn't find any post close in nature to this problem.

I have a crashed Lacie network storage device, something in it's networking board is fried. It's comprised of 2 separate HDD's, both 500gig. I was afraid they were going to be stripped but it appears they hold their own complete files. I was able to look at the files through a file recovery program on Hiren's bootdisk. Said program was unable to keep file structure however. It seems theres no way to activate it to be read as a disk in windows.
Computer management reads both of the disks as having 5 small partitions and a large (476gig) partition on it. No real way to look into that partition though?
A couple other programs analyzed the disk and tell me it's 'linux native'.

Does anybody have any suggestions on how to pull the files as well as folder structure out of it?

It seems that the o.s. partition is Read Only?? Also, is there a way to navigate files and folders on this type of thin client? I see the terminal in "Admin" mode and I can kind-of nav files and folders through the text editor, but I am at a semi-loss doing things this way... I know this may be a stupid question, but is there a way to re-image this thin client to a "Windows" based o.s.? The main problem I am experiencing is an add-on/extension in firefox is not "sticking" in my firefox browser.... I have installed the extension many times, and after I restart the browser, it is gone and my settings are reverted to "original"... I am taking a guess here, but I am guessing every time this client "reboots" it is booting to an image?? One last question, is there any "manuals" for these Linux based clients? I see most or all of the helps seems to be geared towards Windows, and would just like a reference... Thanks for reading!Brandon

A:T610 Linux based thin client

If you're talking about the HP ThinPro OS- Before you can make changes to the file system, you need to run this command from the terminal - "fsunlock". When you're done, "fslock" locks the file system again. There isn't another file explorer tool included that I'm aware of in ThinPro. Command line and the notepad tool are the only real ways to navigate the file system. If you're looking for help with something, keep in mind it is basically a stripped-down version of Ubuntu, with some extra utilities and GUI provided by HP. The nuts and bolts are the same as an Ubuntu build so I've gotten quite a bit of insight from Ubuntu forums online for problems that I've had. As for your browser extensions issue, depending on how you're doing this, you can configure connections to allow them to configure their own settings, or to use HP ThinPro settings. If you haven't allowed Firefox to create and use its own settings in the file system, nothing you change inside the browser will stick. I haven't tried installing a browser extension but I'm pretty sure that's where your problem is.

It's time for a "war"!

For this round, the user audience is from new users to Linux to intermediate users of Linux.

All distros are built upon the Ubuntu Family, offering several desktop environments (DE) to custom built ones.

This time no poll will be selected. Instead, in hopes to achieve not only discussion but helpful feedback for anyone reading this forum, we will do a slight different thing. Feel free to research on Distrowatch, reviews up on Distrowatch and even on personal testing and usage preference to list:

*Overall distro that works best out of the box for new user (list name of distro + DE)

*Ease of use in general for new user (list name of distro + DE)

*Lowest Resource usage distro (list name of distro + DE)

*Drivers support:

To note: some distros only offer specific DE, so some cannot simply be compared to others, but any feedback is welcome. Also, all of them have access to Ubuntu's repositories and can be maintained/upgraded accordingly.

For reference:
Ubuntu Family:
Ubuntu - Unity Desktop Environment(based off Gnome) (targeted at mid end to high end computers for optimal performance)
Kubuntu - KDE Desktop Environment (targeted at mid end to high end computers for optimal performance)
Xubuntu - Xfce Desktop Environment (targeted at low to mid end computers for optimal performance)
Lubuntu - LXDE Desktop Environment (targeted at low to mid end computers for optimal performance)

My dell laptop came with a windows home basic 64bit initially.. I installed windows 8 and then further ubuntu 12.04 through windows 8 to my system.

Due to some unrecognized problem, windows 8 became highly unresponsive as it made the screen unstable as soon as it booted. Due to which i had to delete windows 8 from my system. But i made a mistake of formatting the drive windows 8 was in without uninstalling ubuntu from my system. Since then it didnt boot any other system other than the original windows. If i try installing any OS to my system, just as the installation is about to start the laptop shuts down..I am incapable to load any other OS..I have tried various versions of linux based systems.

I have re-installed windows 7 on my system; making all new partitions. Now many errors that used to occur before in my system are resolved but this problem of the OS installation remains.

Any help on the matter is most welcome..Since I am a linux user..I'd like my system to be responsive to it asap..Any ideas on how windows 8 might have effected my system boot is also welcome.

Hi there bleeps :D
I got a sony vaio laptop, and it has windows 7 OEM on it. Tried to install Linux on it on another partition, and the installation was fine and finished. Then I got into the windows and used BCDedit to add a new value for the linux distro I installed. Now, when I boot the laptop, it gives me 2 options, win and linux... but if I run linux, it gives me an error and doesnt find the bootloader.
If someone can guide me through the process I'm ready to erase all my data from the HDD and repartition everything. My only aim is to be able to dual boot Windows 7 with Kali Linux.
Current partitions:
1- SONY partiton (dont know what the hell that is) ~260MB
2- Recovery parition ~20GB
3- EFI boot partition ~260MB
4- XXXXXXX partition ~300MB (has no name and i don't know what it is for)
5- Windows 7 installation ~70GB (C:/ drive)
6- Linux boot partition ~300MB (/boot)
7- Linux root ~12GB (/ )
8- Linux home ~40GB (/home)
9- Unallocated space ~450GB
Hidden partitions
NTFS partition
Ext4 partitions

A:Want to dual boot Win7 with Linux on a UEFI-based laptop.

I don't know Kali Linux at all, but I have installed Linux Mint 16 on a UEFI Windows 7 system.  Current versions of Linux Mint, Ubuntu, Fedora and OpenSuse at least have support for UEFI.  For Kali Linux, it appears you will have to make a custom ISO with UEFI support - https://forums.kali.org/showthread.php?271-How-to-EFI-install-Kali-Linux
To install Linux Mint, dual booting with Windows 7 in UEFI mode here is what I did...
- Starting point was Win 7 x64 installed in UEFI mode, GPT partitioning scheme on all attached disks, and 100Gb unpartitioned space on one of the disks.  If you need to re-size existing partitions to create space use Gparted.
- Boot Linux Mint DVD in UEFI mode (this involves going into the BIOS, and in the Boot Override menu choosing the name of the DVD drive with UEFI in the name, as per below).  NB This is important - if the installer is not booted in UEFI mode, it will install in Legacy mode and this will not work if the existing OS is installed in UEFI mode.

- Choose "I want to do something else" aka custom installation in the installer
- Created separate root, home and swap partitions (swap, if using, should be equal to ram).  The root and home partitions were formatted to Ext4 FS.  I allocated 20Gb to the root partition and the leftover free space to the home partition.  Mount point for root is /, and for home is /home.
- Find the existing EFI partition created by ... Read more

We run a web proxy server on our network for internet access.
On client machines (running Windows 2012 R2) I have configured the proxy server setting in Internet Explorer "Tools\Internet Settings\Connections\LAN Settings" to point at the designated web proxy server.
When attempting to browse websites from IE I receive the "The proxy server isn't responding" error.
Conversely, browsing the same sites via Google Chrome and Firefox (installed on the same client server) return web pages without error.
In addition, if I run Internet Explorer as administrator (Right Click\Run as Administrator), I am able to browse web sites without receiving the error.
It would appear that the issue is isolated to browsing via IE when not run in elevated mode.
Has anyone come across this issue?

A:Server 2012 R2 - Internet Explorer Proxy Server Issue

Hi Dicki,
First, please try to reset the Internet Explorer. Some plug-ins may affect the proxy.
If it doesn't work, please try to perform a network capture on the client.
Please check if the client send the http traffic to the proxy server at the correct port.
If the client has sent the http traffic to the proxy server, please check if there is any warning or error in the proxy server.
To download Network Monitor, please refer to the link below:

This is a spoofing vulnerability that exists in the affected products and that could enable an attacker to spoof trusted Internet content. Users could believe they are accessing trusted Internet content when in reality they are accessing malicious Internet content, for example a malicious Web site. However, an attacker would first have to persuade a user to visit the attacker’s site to attempt to exploit this vulnerability.
Affected Software:

• Microsoft Proxy Server 2.0 Service Pack 1
• Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 Service Pack 1 and Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 Service Pack 2

Note The following software programs include Microsoft Internet Security and Acceleration Server 2000 (ISA Server 2000). Customers using these software programs should install the provided ISA Server 2000 security update.

Currently we are on an NT network with a few 2000 servers tossed in. Today I learned that the plan is to migrate everything to Linux. Lets assume that this only applies to the servers and that the users will still operate with 98/nt/2000/xp. What are your thoughts on this?

I put this in this forum for a reason. Because I'd rather get the advice from 2000 and 2003 experts who know what Linux cannot replace than to hear the Linux fanboys and anti-Microsoft activists praise it to the high heavens.

What would your concerns be if this was done on your network? What problems have you encountered if you'd tried this? Or what successes? Know of any businesses that have done this successfully?
