HDD replacement in Portege R400-106

Q: HDD replacement in Portege R400-106

Hi
i have a Portege R400-106, which no longer has a hard drive - so can't just get the number off the old one :-(
i'm trying to work out which hard drive i can put in it,
i can see that hard drive space in the laptop has IDE prongs. It is possible that this is PATA type, but my research so far suggests that when drives say they are IDE, i should be OK (please tell me if i have this wrong!)
i believe it is a 2.5" drive i'm looking for and the original drive would have been 80GB, which is about what i think i need.
I think i may be wanting an MK8025GAS ???

i found one at: http://www.memory4less.com/ConfItems.aspx?modelid=80028876
but the cost is pretty prohibative as i live in the UK and the shipping is loads.

I can't seem to find anywhere that can tell me which drive is suitable
cheers in advance for any ideas :-)

Preferred Solution: HDD replacement in Portege R400-106

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi

I found info that original HDD is 1.8-inch PATA HDD with 80GB capacity and you can use TOSHIBA MK8007GAH.

Hi

My Portege's DVD drive is making horrible clicking noises and appears to be on its way out. I have read from a thread on here that universal drives might not work as the Portege's BIOS has assigned the DVD drive as slave and that the new drive must be slave in order to work. Is this correct? I really do not want to be doing the soldering fix!

I have another laptop which has a TSST drive in and i plugged this in and the portgege showed an ide error. Is it just a matter of having the correct firmware or is the issue regarding the ide settings mentioned above.

I have shortlisted a Toshiba dvd drive PA3162E-2CD2 but it says it is compatitble with the Portege 4000, 4010, M100 and Tecra 9000, but does not list the A100 as compatible. Does anyone know if this drive will work on my machine?

Thanks in advance.

A:Replacement DVD drive for a Portege A100

Hi

If you check User?s manuals for Portege A100 is there a list of compatible ODDs? Problem is that all Toshiba notebooks do not have the same hardware platform and all ODDs will not work on each notebook model. As far as I know pin assignment is different. Because of that you need compatible ODD for your notebook model.

As I said at the beginning usually all compatible ODDs are listed in User?s manuals document. Please check it. If not please let us know.

A:Portege 3020ct: Replacement of RTC battery

Huh it is so old notebook model.
I presume you have disassembled the whole machine, right?

RTC battery is placed on the system board. To get RTC battery free you must at first disconnect the speaker harness from PJ16. It is covered with tape. RTC battery is connected to PJ12. It is covered with RTC insulator.

I hope this few info will help you to find the way how to remove RTC battery.

Hello;

I had the keyboard pretty bad and I took it to be changed, but when I brought it back home, we realized that it was not the same as it had before. His explanation was that the original would be much more expensive ... but it does not match the volume keys or many others and also sinks a lot in the center when writing.

Anyone know how much it can cost an original keyboard of this model to replace it ??

I would like to put a claim but I want to have all the details first.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi,
can anyone tell me what the size of the connector should be on the Portege A600-120 keyboard?

My keyboard failed last week and I ordered a new one which was supposed to be compatible with A600 but the connector was too wide.

Mine is a flat ribbon termination 15mm wide.

Keyboard serial number is G8C000903EN but a Google serach shows that is the keyboard for the R500....

thanks

Unfortunately I cannot help you with this info but at the bottom side of the keyboard you will find label with exact part number.

Strange thing is that using Google and G8C000903EN I cannot find anything.

Can you please check this part number one more time?

A:Hard drive replacement on my Portege A200

Hello James

Unfortunately the A200 is not known to me but the concept is always the same. At first check if you can find HDD cover at the bottom side of your unit. If you can not find it from the outside than is the situation much complicated. It is possible that the HDD is placed under the keyboard.

If you have no much experience don?t do it alone because you can damage something and the warranty will not be valid anymore.

Good luck!

Recently got a 3500 off of ebay, happy with it as it does the job I want well, however, it looks a bit tatty and has some damage (due to age etc), and I was wondering if anyone knew of anywhere to get new replacement housings for the portege 3500 and approximate costs. I've looked around, but can't find anything anywhere.

Any help pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Daniel

Usually all parts can be purchased from the Toshiba authorized service provider in your country. The technicians should be able to order the original parts from the Toshiba head stock.

Here you can find the ASP which is responsible for your country:
http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/generic_content.jsp?service=EU&ID=ASP_SUPPORT

So just make a call and ask for the assistance.

Hi Widget,

To be honest I doubt that somebody here can tell you the part number from this cable. It?s only an user to user forum where you can talk with normal people like you and me.

In my opinion you should contact nearest authorized service provider in your country. On the Toshiba website you can find a list of them:

The parts for Portege R830 should be compatible with the R835 too.
Usually this is the same series but released in another region.

The display seems to be compatible with the Portege R705, R830 and R835 series.
Therefore it should be compatible with your model too.

Hi Everyone,

I have a Portege M750 Model PPM75A-007010 and I need to change the CMOS (RTC) battery.

Can anyone share with me
- where to find this battery
- is this the normal round battery and if you can tell me the battery number?
- or where can I purchase this battery and price range?

Thanks,
RC.

A:Portege M750 - CMOS (RTC) Battery replacement

Hi

Normally the RTC batteries in these models are rechargeable.
If not yet done, please let the unit run overnight (not off, not hibernated, not standby - but ON) and see if the issue is resolved.

I think the charge-description/characeristics of the RTC battery is mentioned in your users manual.

ThinkPad Super Low Profile TrackPoint Cap Set, Part number:4XH0L55146. this is the cap fits to thinpad x1 yoga.

since having z20t for the last year and half. I still can not find any other 2-in-1 to be better. this comes from someone who had previously only used the most expensive thinkpad models and updating every 1-2 years.

however, the trackpoint cap drives me a bit crazy as I rely on it most time as a 10+ year thinkpad user. it is tiny, needs a lot of force to move, and after a while, the surface becomes smooth and easy to slip.

I did tons of search and bought quite a few replacement caps to try, none worked. and it bugs me that toshiba does not sell a replacement either. so one day when the cap wears out or damaged, I would need to buy a new keyboard dock at least.

finally I found one that works perfectly, from no other than thinkpad itself.
ThinkPad Super Low Profile TrackPoint Cap Set, Part number:4XH0L55146. this is the cap fits to thinpad x1 yoga.

It fits perfect into the space, right size recess to connect to keyboard, just a bit higher than keyboard surface for easier usage. It is also low enough that it does not touch screen at all (far from it) when closed.

more importantly, as it is bigger and have many dimple on it. it is actually much much better user experience. I would say now it would give similar feeling as the best thinkpad trackpoint now. no slip, needs much less force to move around.

I found this solution by accident as I bought a... Read more

In your case I wouldn?t try it, in worst case you destroy the computer.

I have a Toshiba Portege Z835 P330 ultrabook. I accidently broke the old screen and ordered a replacement from laptopscreen.com My original 14" screen was a samsung model. The one laptopscreen.com sent me was an LG. The First LG screen I received partially worked as in I could see graphics, but no backlight. I sent the screen back for an exchange, and they mailed me a replacement. Same problem: Graphics, but no backlight at all. I am perplexed. What could the issue be? I've quadruple checked the connection and restarted the laptop multiple times. It doesn't appear the video cable is damaged.

The Samsung model # of my original screen is LTN133AT25-T01
The LG Model # of the "compatible" replacement is LP133WH2

Any insight would be appreciated as im not looking forward to hashing it out with the laptopscreen.com tech anymore. Thanks

There are two types of laptop LCD displays: older versions that use a separate fluorescent backlight bulb with an inverter, and newer models that use a true LED backlight integral with the display screen.
Do you know which type your laptop uses? Pure LED backlit screens with have only one ribbon cable to it. CCFL screens will have a second connection.

A:R400- Does not boot with new Kingston ram.

Those modules are Kingston Value RAM modules (identifiable by the KVVxxx product number), which normally don't work well with ThinkPads, if it's possible I would return them back and get a different brand, for example:

Corsair (but avoid the "Value Select" line!)
Samsung
Hynix
Crucial
Elpida
ADATA
Kingston (but not the "Value RAM" line!!)

It sounds like it's not booting to the Windows XP CD. You need to get into the BIOS setup and be sure the boot sequence is set to CDRom Drive, Floppy Drive and then hard drive in that order.

When the PC first powers on, you should see instructions to press a key to get into Setup. It's usually the DEL or F1 key. Once in the BIOS setup set the Boot Sequence and be sure to read the instructions on the screen to save the settings as you exit.

Let us know what happens.

Quick question - will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Layout looks similar; albeit a different colour.

A:Will a keyboard for a Portege S100 work in a Portege M100?

Hi

I think you cannot use the same keyboard because the Portege S100 supports the an-easy-to-use 84-key (US) or 85-key (UK) keyboard and the Portege M100 supports the an-easy-to-use 85/86-key keyboard.
Furthermore the connector of the S100 supports the CN3230 keyboard interface 34 pin connector and the M100 supports the PJ3230 keyboard 34pin connector.

So possibly this could be a problem.
I recommend using the original keyboards released for the each notebook model.

I have a Dell XPS R400 with a Pentium II, 400 MHz processor running Windows 2000. (It originally had Windows 98). I currently have one socket filled with 128 MB of SDRAM (PC100, unbuffered, CL=2) . I would like to upgrade and add more memory.

Information from Dell says the computer supports 100 Mhz SDRAM 168 pin DIMM with a maximum size of 128 MB up to a total of 384 MB (3 sockets).

The motherboard is an Intel SE440BX-2. The documentation for it says it supports up to a 256 MB DIMM SDRAM for a total of 768 MB.

Why the discrepancy? Is it based on the OS? And how high can I go?

A:Memory Upgrade - Dell XPS R400 with Intel SE440BX-2 motherboard

The old W98 did not function properly with 256MB or over.
W2000 does not need more than 512MB, but works fine with up to 1GB.

Intel said:

System Memory Combinations
The motherboard has three, dual in-line memory module (DIMM) sockets. Minimum memory size is 16 MB; maximum memory size is 768 MB. The largest DIMM supported at this time is 256 MB using unbuffered 128 Mbit technology parts. The BIOS automatically detects memory type, size, and speed.Click to expand...

I would believe Intel rather than Dell.
Make sure you get PC100/CL2 SDRam, anything else does not work.
You can mix different MB-sizes memory-chips. So buy what you can afford.
Unless you do intensive graphics, even just 1 256MB-stick will do wonders.

I've recently updated my old laptop to a 64-bit Windows 10 system. And it runs and works fine. However, I'm getting these three listed items without a driver in the device manager. I've Googled a lot, but not found anything that works. Any solutions? And has anyone else the same/similar issue with their Lenovo R400 or Lenovo laptop?

Thanks.

(Just posting this here so people in the future can find it.) I replaced my motherboard and just wanted to leave this here for future reference to some poor soul who has to do the same.
If you replace the motherboard on your Dell Studio XPS 8000, (service tag 3L8DHK1) and you need a new motherboard you can use an INTEL DQ57TM, it's compatible and I did a successful transplant. Your processor is an INTEL Core-i5 750 CPU 2.67GHZ it uses a SOCKET LGA1156. It uses DDR3 memory.
Once you take out your old motherboard and disconnect all those usb and audio wires and the power button wires. To hook up your USB front jacks, audio jacks etc.... here's which blocks go where:
Wires from the audio jacks and usb ports go into these colored block connectors, and those connectors get plugged into those little rows of pins/jumpers called Internal Headers. Every motherboard manual tells you about them. Grab the manual for your new motherboard and it'll tell you where your audio1, usb1, usb2, usb3, usb4 Header connectors are they look like 2 rows and 5 collumns of short little pins. (They almost always have 1 or 2 pins missing on purpose.)
the wires leading to a YELLOW BLOCK gets plugged into the audio1 header on your new motherboard, it's for audio jacks on top of the computer
wires with the WHITE BLOCK gets plugged into the usb3 headers on your motherboard (they are for the usb jacks on the very top of the computer tower)
wires with the GREEN BLOCK gets plugged into ... Read more

Hello.
I am new to this forum, therefore I hope I have searched properly before posting here.
I have a problem with the FN key. It does not work anymore. The flash card function is enabled, I did not change anything, but the taskbar on the top with all the function keys does not appear anymore when I press FN. However some of the functions still work, like FN+F1 (to lock the pc) or FN+ESC (to turn on/off the volume). Other combinations do not work, especially the most important one for me FN+F8 (to enable/disable wifi...).
I looked for a solution on the web, apparently it is a well known problem in many computers, but I cannot find a solution for Toshiba.
Any suggestion please?
Thank you!

Hello!

I would like to know if it is possible to use the Prot?g?-Z series (or any other convertible or hybrid model) with a pen ONLY. Meaning that it should ignore hands and fingers. For me this is very important for drawing on screen as it is much more confortable to draw, when you can lean a hand on the screen and don't have to pay attention not to touch the screen.

Best Regards,
blumentopferde

I am also looking for an answer to this - Toshiba please respond.

From what I can tell (and have confirmed with Toshiba Customer support) the Satellite Z30 is identical to the Portege Z30 except for the following differences:

* The Portege Z30 has Active Management Technology (AMT), allowing certain remote administration for enterprise environments
* The Portege Z30 has a 3 year warranty (as opposed to the Satellite's 1 year)
* The Portege Z30 is preinstalled with Windows 7 and Windows 7 system restore partitions (and Windows 8.1 media provided) whereas the Satellite comes preinstalled with Windows 8.1 system and restore partitions

My question is whether the roll out of an image taken from a Portege Z30's Windows 7 installation will transfer to Satellite Z30 machines? I suspect there will be no issues with the hardware, but am curious about the Windows activation and whether the SLP key on the Satellites will match the Portege.

A:Satellite Z30 vs Portege Z30

I don't have time to check exact difference because these two models because notebooks are country specific products and it can happen that offer in your country is not the same as in some other and you can check this by your local dealer.

Anyway, at first I must say that that Portege notebooks are ?business line? products. Satellite models are more for people who don't have some special needs and mostly common notebook users.
With Portege line Toshiba offers some benefits like better hardware, more options, very often two operating systems, maybe some additional software and of course different warranty conditions.
According to this Portege notebooks are more expensive.

Back to your question: recovery image is specific image designed for certain notebook model.
I don't know which Portege do you mean exactly. Toshiba offers Z30-A and Z30T-A. For instance Z30-A is offered as 6 different models. You know it is not easy to say how it will works.

Theoretically you can try to install this image and see what will happen.
I don't know if you will be so lucky to find someone here who can confirm that such installation will be 100% OK.

Hello,

yesterday i bought new Portege Z30-A-18M and I am a little dissapointed with the fan noise.
The fan is idle only when I am not doing anything with the notebook or when i read something in pdf or microsoft office. As soon as i start Google Chrome or Mozilla, the fan start cooling at 48% of its operating speed (according to Toshiba pc health monitor) and does not stop until I close browser and cpu is cooled to 36 % of its maximal temperature.
My question is, if it is normal for notebook like this to start continuously cooling when the only thing I am doing is browsing internet, and if there is any solution for that problem.

Thank you

A:Portege Z30-A-18M - fan noise

Hi

I don't have this notebook model but I can imagine that cooling fan is active when some applications are active.
I don't know which power plan do you use but, as far as you know, you can change power plans depending on your activity. For every day activities you can use your notebook with power saver plan. It slows down CPU but also cooling fan activity.
Open advanced power options for each power plan and check settings for cooling method. Set it to battery optimized and I hope this will reduce cooling fan activity.

I use the same settings on my Satellite notebook and cooling fan is very quiet.

Hi,

I have a problem with my new notebook Port?g? Z30-B-117,
It has realy noisy fan, I was forced to use baterry saving mode, without that I can not work on this machine.

The fan speed is absurdly designed.
It has much more speed even when it does not heat up.

Please make a new bios with clever fan speed, then it will be the best notebook on the market!

Thanks in advance.

A:Portg Z30-B-117 noisy fan

Sometimes the fan activity would increase in case the CPU is loaded by some background processes.
I had notebook from another manufacturer and the fan speed was high due to process which was running in the background. From time to time the process locked the CPU (up to 80%-90% CPU utilization) and during this time the fan speed was very high.

I spend lot of time to search for details about this process and finally I found out that my antivirus software (it was Norton) loaded the CPU. I switched to Avira and Avast and this issue did not appear anymore.

However, I guess that the CPU could be busy due to any background process?

By the way: you are right: the BIOS contains the fan table and this fan table contain information how to control the cooling modules. But fan activity does not depend only on BIOS? as I said above: background processes as well as the CPU utilization affect the fan speed.

Hello,

I've checked over countless forums for support for this and cant find anything that works to fix the issue so I've decided to post here.

The laptop has been specced to be used with a sim card and windows picks up the internal sierra aircard (em3705) and the latest drivers have all been installed, however using both dedicated software (Sierra Skylight / AirCard Watcher) and the built in windows mobile manger I cannot manage to get this to work. it detects the sim card and shows signal however it wont connect it just says failed.

The built in windows feature is a bit more tricky as it says there is no APN configured but it won't save any that I enter into the system.

The sim card is confirmed working as it will work in other devices such as mifi devices etc. and other sim cards wont work in this laptop either.
Tthe laptop is on Windows 10 and it has been tested before on windows 7 and would work, I have since reinstalled 10 and still no luck with getting it to work

Any help appreciated,

Many Thanks,
Adam

Hi!
I have a problem with my Portege Z30-C-12Z. The camera app in win10 doesn't work.
Error code: 0xA00F4273. Have tried all following steps in: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/w...0-71c220c123a9 and alot more like check BIOS etc.

I feel I have tried and checked everything, please help!

A:Portege Z30-C-12Z cam does not work using Win 10

Try this:
Type Storage in the search window and go the Storage system settings page. Make sure the save locations point to existing folders.
I had moved the library folders to a SD card and the camera couldn't find the pics folder. Elsewhere I saw the suggestion to verify that the pics folder has security settings set to allow access.

If still no good, remove the webcam driver from Control Panel, then let Windows Update install an updated webcam driver.

Reinstalling the Camera App may also help.

Can I insert second HDD instead of DVD drive in my Portege A600-157 ?

A:Second HDD for Portege A600

Hi

As far as I know this is not possible with Portege A600 series.
From my knowledge some other Portege series like Portege M400 or Portege M7xx series supports an Ultra Slim Bay HDD adaptor in order to insert an second HDD in place of the CD/DVD drive but A600 does not support this?
