explorer.exe crashes and restarts at specific times

Q: explorer.exe crashes and restarts at specific times

After days of troubleshooting via trying resolution methods from various forums, I finally have to submit a help topic, because I am out of ideas short of re-installing windows.

explorer.exe crashes whenever I do one of the following items:
- Right click on desktop to see display properties; the right-click menu never comes up; explorer just crashes. (I can get to the display properties fine through control panel.)
- Open up Start/Programs and enter an application sub-menu. Explorer doesn't crash until the sub menu opens, sometimes instantly, sometimes in a few seconds.
- Hovering over an icon on my desktop. Explorer does not crash when hovering over shortcuts, only when I hover over a file sitting on the desktop.
- Trying to open My Computer. A window opens up and the flashlight appears momentarily, then explorer crashes, which also closes the window.
- Trying to browse files via Start/Run or through Task Manager. Explorer crashes after several seconds, regardless of which drive or directory I am browsing. There may be an additional pattern there too as the time it takes explorer to die varies, but I have yet to determine a pattern if there is one. For Start/Run, the window closes, for task manager, sometimes the window freezes when explorer crashes and restarts, and the task manager icon in the task bar never goes away until I pass over it with my mouse.
- Trying to open up administrative tools from the control panel. Other controal panel options work, but this one always crashes explorer.

I have tried the following solutions:
- Scanned for malware and removed a vundo virus using Malwarebytes. The virus was reported to cause a similar reaction to explorer, but so far no forum post sounds exactly like my issue.
- Cleaned my registry using Spotmau, PcMatic and RegTweaker. My system is moving a tad faster, but explorer still crashes.
- System Restored to a point before I started having the issue. No luck.
- Renaming explorer.exe and updating the shell value for the Winlogin key.
- Replacing explorer.exe with another copy from another computer.
- sfc purge and scan, several times, after each other failed attempt.

The first time I had this issue was right after either Comodo or Avira picked up a virus, or at least the behavior of one. It was off the Red Lobster site; I allowed the file to come in, thinking it was a false positive (Comodo has a lot of those), but was to slow to block the second warning, when it picked it up in the cache file. I do not know if this is a related event, but it is the last thing I remember that was unusual prior to this problem occuring. The only other thing I can think of is that I uninstalled SQL Server and VSS logging off of my system, because I couldn't ever get it to install correctly and I received an error everytime windows booted.

Other symptoms I am experiencing since this issue started, again maybe related or not:
- Avira won't update anymore; files download but will not install.
- Quicken will no longer open.
- Media Player 11 was having issues locking up and would cause explorer to crash continuously. That issue is resolved since I reinstalled it.

I should probably also mention that my HD is on its last legs. I am trying to correct the explorer issue before I attempt a final backup, which will be used to ghost my new HD. If I can't do it, oh well, but fixing this issue first would save me a lot of time (or would have, at this point).

Please let me know if any other information may be helpful. I am not too experienced pulling system logs, but take direction very well :-)

Thanks for your help!!!

Preferred Solution: explorer.exe crashes and restarts at specific times

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I forgot to mention, I'm running XP SP3.

Hi to all, i have a laptop running Windows 7 Professional. The problem is strange and havent had it on any other Windows 7 machine.

If i click the folder icon on the bottom tool bar (windows explorer) then in the left hand pane expand the C drive then right click on any folder it instantly displays a dialog saying Explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close, windows is
looking for a fix for this problem (cant remember exact wording) then Explorer.exe restarts. This happens on the local C drive and Network drives.
I though it could be a permissions problem so have taken ownership of all files & folders on the C drive which made no difference, i have removed the laptop from our server / domain and it is still the same / no change.
Can anyone shed any light on this problem or offer any ideas on fixing it? the laptop is only a few months old and is i5 / 4GB RAM Dell machine running Windows 7 Pro SP1 office 2003 Pro, checked for virus & adware & all clean.

A:Explorer.exe crashes when righ click on item in left pane on windows explorer nothing in system logs, explorer.exe restarts.

The faulting module (Fault Module Name: SHELL32.dll) shell32.dll is a Windows system file however the file that is actually causing the crash may be a third party file which from the symptoms
may be a third party context menu handler.
The following link has some info and a download to ShellExView which you can use to selectively disable third party context menu handlers to find out a problematic one:
You could try disabling all non-Microsoft context menu handlers and then, if the problem resolves, re-enable them one at a time to see which one was the problem.
BTW, the error should be logged in the Event Viewer Application log as a Application Error involving explorer.exe

This happened recently after my sister downloaded something from the internet, and when I opened the folder to transfer it to her flash drive, a notification popped up telling me that, "Windows Explorer has crashed," and then it restarts (not the computer, just explorer. It sort of "refreshes" the desktop), then loads, and then crashes again.

I can still use my laptop normally from adjacent accounts, and when I tried deleting the file (the source of all of this, I'm assuming) it says that I need the permission of my main account, even though this account that I am currently using is also and administrator.

Can someone give me a little help? If there is none to be found I can use this side account for a while until something can be done, but it is incredibly inconvenient.

I am using Windows 7 currently.

The computer is probably infected with a virus or other malware. Post this in the Virus and Malware Removal forum:

I'm not sure when this started, but now as soon as I try to access anything in a specific folder, Windows Explorer will crash 100% of the time. If I so much as right click the directory itself, WE will crash.

I've already tried using ShellExtend View to check Context Menu Handlers. I checked all the ones not made by Microsoft by disabling them one by one and checking to see if any of them is causing the problem. None of them seems to be the culprit.

This folder contains a few hundred gigabytes of software, so I can't just delete it.

I can open folders inside the directory, but if I right click on any file or folder in that directory, WE crashes.

I'm not sure when it started, but when I open a certain folder on a network share windows explorer "looks for a solution" and then closes. There is only one folder this happens to and it only contains other folders, html docs, and php docs.

We have dozens of computers that access it fine including 2 identical machines loaded with identical images so I am assuming the user (or software) did something.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:[SOLVED] Explorer crashes when opening one specific folder

The user that logs into this computer with the issue, have them to log into the identical machine that does not have the issue as him/herself.

Does the issue persist, if it does you know it is probably a permissions issue.
If the problem does not persist then you narrowed it down to that computer or their profile on that computer.

A:Solved: Explorer crashes when opening one specific folder

I found the issue with the machine. After re-imaging and letting him have the machine back it started happening again. It turned out to be an on-line backup program he installed called "MiMedia" which monitored that directory. As soon as I removed it everything is fine.

I'm one of those people who uses Limewire for my various filesharing needs. And last week, it simply stopped opening. It would get to the point where it was initializing folders, and just crashed. So I uninstalled it, and went to delete all the folders it had created. Well, when I attempted to delete the folder "Shared", windows explorer crashed. Same thing when I try to just open it, or view the folder properties, or even select it with my mouse.

Is there any way to fix this and/or delete the damned folder?

EDIT: I'm running Windows XP Pro, SP1, no other patches or anything
Also, attempting to navigate to the folder from a command prompt is successful, but even just typing "dir" simply quits command.

Incomplete avi files are probably to blame. You could try deleting it in Safe Mode or use Emco Move On Boot to delete it at next boot.

Extract this zip and run the exe to fix the avi problem.

You should install SP2 for the 100's of bug fixes.

Ever since I started using Windows 8, both my HP Pavilion desktop and Sony Vaio Pro 13 has explorer.exe crash pretty often. The Vaio crashes more often - multiple times a day - maybe because it's my main computer now and I use it more often. Upgrading to Windows 8.1 didn't make a difference. Crashes are sometimes caused when I try to copy a folder, right click on a disk image or USB drive, right click on a file, or even when not while using it. Sometimes it crashes when I'm just watching a movie and it's pretty annoying because it shows the taskbar over the full screen movie after it restarts.
So far, I haven't lost any data, but I want to get this fixed before anything really bad happens. Is there a way to upload a crash dump or something so someone can take a look at this problem? I have similar programs installed on both computers, so I'm guessing it's a specific program that's just buggy with Windows 8 (btw, I have never had this problem with Windows 7 on my old macbook, so yeah...)

The HP desktop specs:
Ivy Bridge quad core i5 and
AMD 7770 graphics card
256gb Sandisk Extreme SSD
6GB DDR3 dual channel

Sony Vaio Pro specs:
Haswell i7 ultra low voltage
Integrated Intel 4400 graphics
8GB single channel LDDR3

A:Windows explorer.exe crashes multiple times a day

Check Event Logs for clues and answers.

Recommend AVG removal to test, although it's probably not the problem.

You can not lose data and nothing bad can happen (unless there is malware present.) The issue is very common and happens from 3rd party junky software.

If you have poorly encoded media files, and you navigate to the folder with them, or a folder above them where explorer tries to make thumbnails, those can cause it too.

Play with this: ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows

I first noticed that explorer would crash a few weeks ago after I stumbled across an infected .wmf file while surfing the net. I was logged in under my limited account and my anti-virus detected the .wmf but it could not take action, I believe due to the fact I use system restore. I finally was able to delete the .wmf after which I ran several different scans and could not detect anything except Microsoft (R) HTML Application host had been altered (24,576 bytes to 24,064 bytes), so I replaced the file (note: explorer was already crashing before this point). The only time it seems to crash is once in a while when I click on My Document, Control Panel, My Pictures etc...

Hi this just started happening today. I'm not sure what happened to trigger it. I have run virus scan and it didn't found any infected files.

Explorer.exe will load when my machine starts up. About every 5-10 seconds, it will close, meaning my desktop blinks off. Another 10 seconds later (or around that) explorer.exe will start again and my desktop will come back.

Eventually, it stops trying to load and the desktop stays off. I can go to task manager and run explorer.exe to repeat the process of having explorer.exe run, stop, run, etc.

I don't receive any error messages when this happens.

This machine has the latest Microsoft updates incl service pack 2.

Any help would be appreciated.

I have a problem that started yesterday. Every 30 seconds Windows Explorer (not the browser) crashes, then restarts. I run Xmarks within FireFox, I thought this was the problem because Xmarks as of yesterday asks me every 40 seconds if I want to sync my bookmarks, if I choose cancel, Windows Explorer will crash then restart.

When Firefox is closed, Explorer continues to crash and restart, almost every 30-35 seconds. I have Windows 8.1 up to date, with all the latest updates, FireFox is up to date. As of writting this post, Windows Explorer has crashed and restarted (5) times.

My explorer.exe constantly crashes and restarts; however, when I go into safe mode it works perfectly which means it is a driver problem. So I began to use the app, DriverView, to look at all the drivers I have and sure enough I find 3 very suspicious files that are most likely the cause to my problem.They looked suspicious because their file type was listed as unknown and their description was blank.the three files were:dump_dumpata.sysdump_dumpfve.sysdump_msahci.sysThey are said to be located at C:\Windows\System32\Drivers but when I looked there i couldn't find them. I tried scanning for viruses in normal and safe mode using AVG but I found nothing. I then uninstalled AVG and installed Avira. I also scanned in normal and safe mode using Avira but I still found nothing. The virus blockers i used also were updated. For some reason I just can't findi them. I've had this problem for a year or so. I've since formatted at least 3 times. Nothing seems to cure it. I can begin having this issue the very same day I have formatted my system. My only idea is that some Windows Update patch from the last year has had some kind of adverse effect with my hardware. There seems to be no trigger. I can leave my system alone, with absolutely no software running, and I can come back to find this error popped up. Maybe it has something to do with Windows Scheduling service? But nothing is scheduled...

What could be causing it? It's nothing more than an annoyance, but I'd like to fix it if possible.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Please move hijackthis to the root of C: (C:\HJT) and NOT in a temp folder.

Before attacking an adware/spyware problem with hijackthis make sure you have already run ad-aware SE with VX2 add-on cleaner, Spybot Search & Destroy (with updated database) and CWShredder as these programs will clean a lot of the crap out first. All links to programs are in my signature. Ok..on to the log?..

If you have a highspeed connection please Run an online virus scan from TrendMicro Please select the ?autoclean? option when prompted to do so.

Download and install CleanUp http://cleanup.stevengould.org/

Download Winsock2Fix and unzip it. Then double-click on it to run it.

Download and Run the FixAgent tool from https://beta.activeupdate.trendmicro...entv1.0007.zip
After that is done run the bat file in this file http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/home_missing_114.zip (ONLY if infected) and this will fix the permissions flaw created.

Download Hoster http://members.aol.com/toadbee/hoster.zip

Run the Look2 Me uninstaller http://www.look2me.com/cgi-bin/UnInstaller

Go to My Computer->Tools->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that Show hidden files and folders is enabled. Also make sure that the System Files and Folders are showing/visible also. So for the past month or so, explorer.exe has been crashing continuously. It happens on several occasions...

-Most notable when I first boot up Windows 7, it crashes and restarts in an assiduous manner, for maybe 10-15 times until it stops suddenly and starts working again

-When accessing files which force explorer to open, e.g. when I open a document, open the 'My Downloads' folder, and such locations (the crashing and restarting scenario occurs in every situation)

I haven't found a solution as of yet. I even tried ending the process in Task Manager and running it again... with the result of it continuing to freeze and restart even after I run it form Task Manager, until as usual, it suddenly stops crashing and starts working again.

Is there any possible solution to this which doesn't involve any type of System Restore/OS wipe?

Thanks in advance.

P.S. PC is defragged, registry and junk files cleaned using CCleaner and Disk Cleanup, issue still persists. SpyBotS&D cannot detect any malware, and ESET NOD32 cannot detect any viruses or infections either.

A:explorer.exe crashes and restarts when certain actions are performed

This is usualy caused by a bad file filter installed in explorer. And you can usualy trace it down to what type by noticing what files are in the folders you are opening.

Unless this happens at the default "libraries" or "Computer" entries as well...

Can you shed any light on where it does and maybe does not crash?

Did you install anything (Codecs, Office programs etc) just before this started?

Hi Guys,

This issue has been driving me nuts for the past few months and I've found no solution as yet.

Windows explorer (windows 7 Home Premium, SP1, 64 bit OS) will frequently crash with seemingly no pattern (opening directories, scrolling through files, copying files etc) even when running in safe mode. I've tried various malware applications and hard drive
checks, but to no avail.

I am trying to run a few different repairs but they all require me to right click and then run as admin. My problem is that if I right click any Icon or desktop anything explorer crashes and restarts. I can not find any way to give myself admin access. I am the admin of the computer and logged in under my account but it does not matter what account I log in under it always crashes. Is there any other way to run the CMD sfc /scannow?

A:Problem- Right click on anything and explorer crashes and restarts

Hello Dave84 Welcome to the Seven Forums!

You can start up the System File Checker tool at the Start>Run command line. (refer to image attached)

That won't require any right clicking on anything. You could even add the Takeownership option to the right click menu but will need to first repair the present Windows installation since this sounds like one or more system files are corrupted.

The other thought on this is a possible malware infection leaving you with corrupted files like the explorer.exe sheil file used by Windows Explorer as well as the Computer desktop icon for browsing drives.

HI, I had no problems this morning, but after I put some videos from my camera onto my computer,and then tried to upload them to youtube, I couldn't do it. Internet Explorer kept closing and restarting everytime I tried to upload. So I went to firefox, same problem, then to chrome, same problem. Finally I decided to just go to the video on my computer and show it to someone, I went into the picture folder, and then Explorer closed and restarted. It happens all the time, where I can't even get to open a file. I ran the SFC and got a SFC detail sheet. I think some file is corrupted. Can someone help me? I am going to post the SFC details so someone can give me a starting point to work on this. Thanks

I have recently had an issue with my computer...when I open my picture files, Explorer "cannot open, file corrupted" & "encountered a problem" and restarts. I have had an on going issues with Vista crashing and then restart, some times it does it so quick that I hardly notice it because it was just the OS restarting not the computer rebooting. The how and why Vista would restart was unknown though I do remember a couple of times I would get a media player error but that was not consistant.

However, now the error is consistant and I can replicate it. On certain files, when I would RIGHT Click on the file to look their property Vista will crash and after scanning itself, restart up. At first I have not paid attention to the files in question but today I noticed that when I went to look at the properties for Gas Powered Games' Dungeon Siege 2, because it crashes every time I try to start it (I just reinstalled the game yesterday and while I ran into an online issue, was able to play the single player version fine but today when I tried to start the game it won't start and crashes).

I did two searches under Vista restarting and Vista restarting when Right Clicking properties and after reading the 75 results, there were a few threads that had very similar issues but they were locked and none of them had an answer.

So, let's try it again, anyone got a clue about this issue?

My system is an ACER, that I keep updated with Microsoft Update and protected by AVG as well as the Microsoft utilities.

A:Explorer Crashes and then restarts when Right Click on Properties

Are you sure its not just Windows Explorer crashing? I don't see how the OS could restart but not the computer. Try typing sfc /scannow into your start menu. This will check you system files and repair them if they are indeed damaged.

Hi. Today morning I started my PC and just after the start up Windows Explorer crashed and restarted and then did (and does) the same every 10-15 seconds. I googled the problem and did following steps (not in the same order as below) which didn't resolve the issue:

- restarted few times and switched off PC completely;
- tried to fix registry with Vit Registry Fix;
- did SFC /SCANNOW and it finished with information that some issues couldn't be fixed;
- ran Malwerbytes with no malware found;
- did a full Kaspersky Internet Security scan with no viruses found;
- did a clean boot (all non-windows services were not used) and it still crashed;
- did a diagnostic start up (so only basic windows services were used) and it helped;
- I wanted to do a system restore but Windows doesn't have data on any restores, meaning I probably haven't started the service (doesn't it make it automatically?);

Other info:
- system works fine in Safe Mode and diagnostic start up, thus eliminating issue with external applications;
- when in normal mode and crashing I looked at processes appearing and disappearing and found out that at the crash process the file dllhost.exe disappears then and shortly after appears back (it may or may not be relevant);
- I didn't do any major updates yesterday (only updated Steam platform and installed one new game);
- I can't do perfmon /report as in Safe mode it doesn't display anything and in normal mode I don't have enough time to start the applicati... Read more

A:Windows explorer crashes (and restarts) on system start-up.

Just an update - based on my experience with "fixing" the system, I've decided to back up the data and make a fresh installation (no point in loosing more time on trying to resolve the issue but just spend the time on new system and at least enjoy a faster Windows for some time). Funny though that a year ago I had to do the same due to some dll corrupt file (it was much worse then). I really love Microsoft!

P.S. Thanks for reading this thread, if you think you may add something (so in the future if someone looks for info on how to fix it) feel free to add some advice.

Hey all.

I'm looking for a way to make the computers at the local library here log off at closing time. Unfortunately the library hours are not on a standard schedule. So I need to make the computers log off at 4:50 PM Tuesday - Thursday, and at 1:20 PM on Friday and Saturday. I've tried using the task scheduler but I must be screwing something up as it isn't working the way i want.

Anyone have ideas how I can do this? Preferably without downloading any software but if i have to I can.

Oh and 5 of the computers have W7 Pro 64 bit and 2 have W7 Ultimate 32 bit.

If you want you can create a Standard account with No password and prevent it from creating the password

Hi all.
This is simply a shout to see if anyone can help me.
My internet connection slows considerably, from around 6 meg to 1 meg, between the times of EXACTLY 5:15pm, and Exactly 10:45pm. I understand that it is 'peak time' between these hours, but as my neigbours all get a decent connection speed at these times i would like to know why I don't, and resolve the problem.
I play on a PlayStation 3 very regularly and my connection is fine until between 5:15 and 10:45pm, at which time it becomes completely unplayable due to 'lag'.
We are currently on AOL internet in the UK and i am aware that they are not the best provider [but i got a good deal to stay with them!!], but they are obviously capable of providing us with a decent connection as they do so during the day until 5:15.
i have changed G-band routers twice, and the problem persists, but i have an N-band on the way.
Any Ideas why or what or how this is happening and how to fix the problem?
Thanks, Frankie.
