trouble hearing sounds other than system sounds

Q: trouble hearing sounds other than system sounds

my computer won't play any sounds other than system sounds. i have a creative sound blaster PCI512 sound card and im running windows xp pro. i tried downloading the driver update from the creative website, but it had no effect.

Preferred Solution: trouble hearing sounds other than system sounds

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: trouble hearing sounds other than system sounds

try uninstalling your sound card from your device manager and check if your card is seated properly in the slot. re-install and boot.
if problem persists call a doctor. lol.

I've got a weird one: I hooked the HDMI from the PC to the television and get great picture, but the sound is weird. I get system "dings" and whatnot, but I don't get the audio from games or YouTube videos. I've already tried setting the default audio device to the HDMI port, but I get sound from the speakers on the PC, not via HDMI.

The video card is an EVGA 750 Ti SC, running on a Biostar HiFi A85W.

A:Get system sounds, but NO YouTube or game sounds. Help?

If you have the Default Audio Playback Device set as HDMI then you should be getting sound only from HDMI. Sounds like that is not happening.

You should have the NVDIA High Definition Audio and the regular PC audio (whatever that is) shown in the Device Manager, Sounds section. If you do not have NVIDIA High Defintion Audio, or only the generic Windows installed "high Definition audio driver (codec) shown for the HDMI audio that could be the problem.

Uninstall the Video Card, in the Device Manager (do not uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the Video Card. See if this corrects the problem. If not, install or reinstall the latest NVIDIA driver.

Hey guys, I'm having a problem with my external HDD, just happened today, after I plugged it in, a dialog appeared saying "Do you want to scan and fix ,<insert drive name and letter here>", I clicked the option below which is continue unscanned if I can remember and because I was just gonna add a some .txt files, after pressing the option I heard subtle clicking sounds which has an interval of around 0.5~1.0 seconds, I immediately presumed that it's the click of death, I quickly remove the external drive, I returned it in place and did the scan and fix thing by windows, I'm currently not hearing some clicking sounds now. Question is, does the clicking sound appears when you don't do a check disk an external or internal drive? Just tell me if it's really need to go to a repair shop if needed.
External HDD:
Western Digital 32000BEV External HDD 298.09 GB (1 year and 9 months old)

Edit: I don't want to do the freezer trick because it's hot in here, the ice may condense and turn in to water, I'll only do it if I place it in a plastic and it has no air inside it and problem is don't have a vacuum.
Edit 2: The checkdisk stopped without any reason, when ever I click the check this disk, the dialog closes automatically, I can access the files inside though.
Edit 3: Currently doing a checkdisk for the external drive it's 3/4 on the way to the end.

A:External HDD, hearing some subtle clicking sounds

Your first task is to backup all data from that drive. Do not do anything else until that is done.

Then run the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic test program on the drive. You can download these from their website. See what it finds.

The click could be a disk head parking problem. It is possible for this to be a one-off event, but most times it is an indication of a larger, hardware based fault inside the drive.

Ok so I have a simple, but annoying problem. I have no Windows Sound Events like the login sound, the logout sound, and when the battery is low. Every other sound like playing music and running YouTube videos work fine. Even when I turn on my laptop I hear the whole computer startup sound, but I don't hear the login one. I don't understand the problem. I went into personilazation and went to Windows Sounds, but when I select one and click "Play" I don't hear anything. I tried the other Sound Themes and they don't work either. I ran the Fix It program for Audio, and it didn't find anything wrong.

Hi all; I have a weird problem. My Dell Dimension 3000 Running XP bla-bla....had no drivers installed when I got it back. Had to download Ethernet driver on another computer to a flash drive. And get it up and running. The writable CD-Rom sounds fine {it has a different driver than the player only] I double checked the driver twice and it is the exact one. I even tried a different cd-rom device and it had the audio quality problem. It just sort of sounds like it's clipping.I don't know where to go next........HELP!

Just set up my new Dell 660 desktop and noticed that with Windows Default sounds
that the "navigation compete" sound effect and some others don't seem to be working.
That one sound I mention is the familiar sound you get when using IE and clicking
the mouse to navigate around the web pages but a few others are not working either.
Is it possible that in 8.1 MS has eliminated those sounds?

I went to browse the .wav files and don't see that sound listed.

    Any help would be appreciated.

I bought some Logitech Z506 surround speakers for my PC, but after hooking them up I found the front right speaker (the one with the thick black cord) was making a crackling/popping sound. So I took them back and got another set and the exact same speaker was again making a crackling/popping sound. I noticed that the only time it would make the this sound was when I played certain songs that had a very low bass beat, deep chord or certain timber to the singer's voice. Also, when there was no sound at all I could hear a distinct hiss in that speaker.

I thought it was odd that the exact same speaker would be bad in both sets I bought, so I was thinking perhaps it might be something else (a setting, or something). I took the second set back also, so right now I don't have any PC speakers, but before I buy another set I thought I would post here and see if I could get some help or advice so I can figure out what's going on.

A:Trouble with right front speaker: crackling/popping sounds

Ive had this same thing happen to me before. Sometimes; it can be resolved by restarting the system; but if not; then you may have to uninstall the sound card etc. from the device manager; reboot; and let windows re-detect and reinstall the sound card and hopefully that will get rid of the crackling sound.

So I'm not sure what I've done to my computer, but I have no clue why I'm not able to hear my system sounds. When I log in and out, I hear nothing. When I click on something, I hear nothing. Now when I go into my device manager, the SoundMAX Digital audio tool is selected for all of the applications EXCEPT the voice playback. When I try to select it, and I apply it, it works for the moment. However when I go back in, it's greyed out again.
So there's WMP... I can listen to songs, and I can play games on the internet and listen to the sounds from that. When I go on YouTube or any other site that has inlying video, I can't hear anything. I'm also unable to use my little Microsoft recorder, even though my microphone will work with my webcam. Microsoft wants $236 to tell me what's wrong with my computer... I can't even see doing that. Please help!!!

No matter what sound scheme I choose all system sounds are a low frequency click.

If I open a wav file and select play from the context menu I hear what I would expect, but when I apply that wav file (e.g. a chiming bell) to say System beep - all I hear is the click!

Other programs - like my PIM can use the same wav files and produce the expected sound - its only Windows that is stuck on this barely audible click for everything.

I've been having problems with sound issues in this 3 month old system since day one and have searched here for days for a possible solution. I've tried all of the suggestions to no avail. My system sounds (on the volume mixer bar) never go higher than 10-15%. Media Player seems OK but not great volume. Internet sounds (You tube) reach around 50%.

I noticed a windows (optional update) this month is for a new driver for my Soundblaster card from Creative and I am thinking maybe I should try that first before further exploring.... BUT, I notice the new driver is released in August of 2009!!!! but published 6/2/2011. Is that possible?

My current driver is dated May 2009. Gee... was Creative on strike for 2 years?

Since the new driver is 41mb, I am assuming it will install a new control panel. My question, at the moment ... is, if I have to roll back the driver because it's worse, will I automatically get back my control panel?

I've never dealt with drivers, sound cards etc... and very shy about all of this. I really appreciate any help I can get. The Creative forums were pathetic (in my humble opinon) as 1,000's of posts never get responses.

    A:System sounds are very low

I suggest completely disabling any audio device you are not actually using for starters.

To do this click on the device, for instance the ati output
click the properties button, and at the bottom of the window that opens use the dropdown to disable the device.
It appears you are also not using the built in realtek device. The ideal thing to do here would be to disable the onboard audio in the system bios.
But following the above mentioned steps should do essentially the same thing.

If you aren't scared of your bios settings going in there and disabling the onboard audio would be best.

You do want to leave the x-fi stuff on, as that is your main audio device.

You will need to install the drivers again that you seem to have deleted for the audio controller.

I just did a fresh install of NT4.0 SP 4 and most of the system sounds do not work (default beep, program open, program close, minimize, maximize etc). Sound card is working fine, no driver problems, I get my assigned sounds on Windows Open and Close. What's with the rest of 'em?

    A:NT System Sounds

I have no idea. Try re-expanding them from your NT CD.

Go to the CD and do a search for all .WA_ files.

Use the expand.exe (or is that extract.exe) program that you will find in your i386 directory.

Hi all, I seem to have lost my System sounds but all the other media sounds are still there like for Games and Music, so I figured it had nothing to do with my sound card.

I've got Windows XP Pro with Service Pack 2 installed on my computer, I checked to see if the sounds had been turned off but found they haven't and now I'm at my wits end at trying to find out whats wrong with this thing.

    Any help will be appreciated,

    Thank You.

It's always best to do all Windows Security updates, just in case you get some type of infection, due to not having them done.

Seeming you haven't done them, I'd suggest you run through this first, (you probably have some malware installed)

win xp pro, ecs K7S5A mobo, soundblaster 5.1, ATI AIW 9000 pro

Sound from CD, mp3, etc works fine but win xp will not make any system sounds. When I go in to the Sounds and Audio Devices, Sounds tap and try to play an event sound I get this error message:

" windows cannot play sound %system root%\windows xp error.wav. your sound card may be in use. "

I got this message when I was using the onboard sound for my mobo. Upgraded to the soundblaster card, disabled on-board sound, cd's play, etc, but still get the same error message when I try to play a system sound.

    Thanks for any help.

Ive tried searching but havent found anything that has worked yet. I have a Windows XP PC and I can't get any sounds other than the system sounds to play. Ive double checked all the wires and everything is hooked up properly. When I go into my control panel> Sounds and Audio Devices, I cant manually adjust the sound settings and when i double click on the sounds icon in the bottom right corner of the screen, i get a message saying there are no active mixer devices available. If anyone could help me out, I appreciate it. Im usually ok with computers, i just cant figure this one out.

My Windows 7 computer won't play most sounds when an event occurs. I've already gone into the Sound window from Control Panel, and the sounds still won't play. The following program events DO play a sound : default beep, device connect, device disconnect, device failed to connect, empty recycle bin, windows change theme, windows logoff, windows logon, windows UAC, and start navigation. The following events DO NOT play a sound: Asterisk, Critical Stop, Exclamation, and System Notification. How can I fix this? I can appreciate any help. Thanks.

    A:Some System Sounds Won't Play

Have you tried changing the Sound Scheme to something other than the "Windows Default (modified)" that you have. Then change it back to the Windows Default Modified and see if that fixes it.

About 3 wks ago a game I had been playing Bejeweled2 just froze every time I launched it. I removed it - it won't re-install. Now when I go into My Music, double click a track it opens in iTunes, or Windows Media PLayer - looks like it is playing or freezes, go on the internet which is working fine go onto YouTube, or Live Radio etc - shows as though it is playing sound - but its not. Or it freezes! I have run all the suggestions through help and support centre, dxdiag etc - all works properly it says! When I switch on my computer it plays the normal jingle though and the intermittent bongs etc like when a new email comes still play too. What else can I try?Any help will be very gratefully received! Thanks in anticipation!

I've been doing fine with Win8.1 x64, until a few days ago. At that time there were two changes, one of which I assume to be the culprit. (1) a succession of Windows updates, and (2) my installation of HitmanPro Alert (HMPA) in place of Malwarebytes Anti-Exploit.

Then it crept up on me that I wasn't getting the system beep when I clicked on a program window when I had a dialog box open from that program. The program window title bar would flash, but no sound. Then I realized that I was without the very useful Toggle Keys beeps. Subsequently I found that also the Critical Stop sound was missing in this situation. Not all system sounds were missing - for example, the device connected / disconnected sounds.

This is NOT a matter of sounds having been turned off, at least in the standard manner. When I open the Sounds applet I find all my system sounds are still correctly configured, and all that I test there do play. Also, opening the "Making the keyboard easier to use" section in the Accessibility Centre shows Toggle Keys still enabled - and turning that feature off, applying the change, and then turning it back on and applying the change doesn't make any difference.

It is thus clear that something is blocking those particular sounds or disabling them in a non-standard manner.

I tried uninstalling HitmanPro Alert, and sometimes then got the sounds back after a full shutdown of the computer (but not just a reboot), but currently have now had two computer sessions (... Read more

A:Some but not all system sounds gone awol!

If updates are involved the quick fix is to run the restore point just before the updates. If that is not possible you can try uninstalling the updates one by one.

I'll start by saying that I'm not sure if this is in the right forum. Forgive me if it isn't.

What I would like to know is how to not have system sounds played while I'm listening to music. On my old (and I do mean old: win98, 64mb ram, etc) computer when I listened to music my system sounds were muted, which was really nice. My old computer had an older soundblaster sounds card. My new computer (xp home) has onboard sound and when I listen to music I still get to hear all the system sounds, etc (ie, cards being dealt in solitaire.) Did it have something to do with my sound card on my old system? How can I make the new system do what I want?

I have a Compaq Pentium 4 computer which has audio ports at the back and the front too.
The front has 2 audio ports for mic/ headphones and the back has 2 ports also (one for speaker and the other for mic)...
But when am playing music or something that has a sound on this computer, the sound comes from both the system and the mic.
I dont like it in a way that the sounds should come from the system because it disturbs so I want it to come out from the mic alone when connected but it should come out from the system when mic is not connected...
I have checked from the systray volume icon when I lower the volume, it affects both system sound and mic performance.
When i go into volume advance settings, I see the following tabs:
Volume Control, Wave, CD In, Line IN, MIDI, Microphone, SW Synth and CD Player volume controls...
When i mute Waves, it stopped the system from using sound effects and the mic also stops when i unmute the waves, the sounds come back again,.
How do I get the mic working only when its been inserted into the audio port and the system sounds not working whiles mic is in audio ports?

Hi I'm new here so if anythings unclear or not stated please ask and i'll try and explain better.

I've been having a problem with the sound on my laptop, when im doing nothing else at all it ok (most of the time) but when i do anything, even as little as to minimise a window the sound cuts in and out, its like its stuttering. sounds like my system was struggling to cope.

So i did everything i could think of, cleaned out my hard drive, defragged, run anti-virus/spyware software. But it's no better - i have no idea whats causing it now. Ive been trying to understand all the processes and CPU usage in the task manager to see whats goin on but ive been largely unsuccessful.

Im running a Philips freevents laptop, 2GB ram, 100GB hard drive (now 40% empty after a hefty clean out!) , WIN XP

I don't have a clue what I've done or if I had anything to do with it, but my system sounds are gone. In fact, ALL sound capability is gone. For several days I had been working blissfully with my volume control turned all the way down. When I turned it up recently, I noticed the sound problem.

I've reseated the SoundBlaster card, gone through the troubleshooter, answered all the questions, checked the cables, couldn't find any conflicts, and I'm still stumped. Can you please help?
