I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Have you tried to put UAC back on to the first settings and see if that works?† There seems to be some issues with having UAC off and being able to perform some tasks as running Gadgets.† Maybe this is another one of those instances where having the UAC on is needed.I jsut checked and i am able to modify files in my C:\Windows folder and i have UAC on the lowest setting before actually having it turned off. ~Alex T.~Windows Desktop Experience MVP~

On Startup, Windows displays the "File waiting to be written to CD" message but the folder is empty.
If I attempt to copy a new file to the CD, it casches to the temporary folder but will not write of the CD. Either the "save and retry" message appears or sometimes a "file is wrong size". The file has been identified as CAKTIZWD, which no longer exists on my computer.
I can read the CD but can not write to it.
I am running Windows XP SP2 on a dell Inspiron 6000 laptop.
The CD is OK. I can burn CD's using Roxio.
I have run Mcafee virus scan and System Mechanic registry cleaner in an attempt to clear the erroneous tag, with no results.

Hi,
I am able to read but not able to write on shared folder from Windows 7, however i was able to do the same from Windows XP compture.

I have following setup:

1) Shared Folder is on Windows 2003 server on same workgroup and network. Private network
2) Accessing Shared Folder resides in Windows 2003 server from Windows 7 Premium. Can read folder but cannot write anything to the folder

I made sure that folder has access to "Everyone" - read and write on shared folder on windows 2003 server. Drive is not full.

I am getting message on Windows 7 compture that "You need permission to perform this action"

I am pulling my hair off with this issue. Seems like it is small issue but not able to resolve.

I don't have any kind of burning software, and am forced to rely on Windows XP's built in Write-to-CD software. The problem is, even with a rewritable CD drive, re-writable DVD drive, and re-writable CD's and DVD's, any material I put on them with the built in Windows XP writing software, becomes write-protected, making it impossible not only to remove the material at a later date, but also to add anything to it. A CD can have over 675 mb of free space that is absolutely inaccessible because of this problem.

Is there any way to reformat these CD's or otherwise remove the write-protect on them? Some of the data on these CD's is not the kind I'd like anyone else to see, meaning that if they are absolutely absolutely ***ABSOLUTELY*** untouchable forever and ever and ever, I would be forced to destroy them altogether (likely breaking them in half or something) and dispose of them as trash (environmentally unsound or not) rather than submit them to a recycling center and risk some noseybody reading what's on them before recycling them.

A:Windows XP Write-to-CD: Write-Protect blues

All CD's are read-only and the contents cannot be changed. Some use packet-writing, but those only erase the previous version and write a new one, so they can't be changed, either. Space is less and gets used quickly.

The best way to have read/write access to data is to use an external USB drive or thumb drive.

It is best to stick with the standard ISO format. Save all your changes to a folder untill you are ready to burn the final copies to CD.

Hi I have a Windows program that is installed in the default C:\Program Files (x86) folder, and of course it cannot write some of the data it needs to write to that folder. I assume that is because of the Windows 7 permissions.
Is there a simple way to allow this particular program to write to its install folder despite permission restrictions? I already moved its data folder to my data partition but this is for some files that I do not have the option to move to another folder.
Thank you.

A:Program cannot write to installed folder

Run the program as administrator. Right click the programs .exe file and click 'Run as Administrator". Then it can do what ever you need it to, despite permissions.

So I was browsing my email and found a msg that I was chosen to beta test the new MMO Skyforge which I had registered for almost a year ago. Excited, I followed the directions to download the beta client file, and when I ran it, I noticed that it was trying to default to an additional disk drive that I had plugged in that was from an older rig build (the only component that survived a lightning strike). It should have defaulted to my C drive but instead is trying to install on the older drive which is marked as F drive.

So I tried to change the location, and I got a msg I've never seen before: "Insufficient permissions to write to folder....."

HUH?!

I'm logged in and ran the program as administrator, and yet windows refuses to allow me to install it.

Is there a way to fix this?

**UPDATE01**: I decided to try and run a command in cmd prompt as administrator: sfc /scannow, thinking that maybe there might have been corrupted files in my OS (Win7 Ultimate 64). sfc found nothing. Still stumped.

A:Insufficient Permissions to write to folder

Right click on the folder, and select properties. Make sure the Read-Only attribute is unchecked/deselected, as it could've been installed as read-only for some odd reason.
From there, open up the Security tab. Scroll through the list of "Group or user names", and look for your Windows log-in name/username.
If you do not find your username there, select Edit... underneath that list, select the Add... button near the middle of the window, and enter in your Windows username, and select OK. Make sure your username is highlighted.

After that, try and set the Permissions to Allow:Full Control. Select OK. If it asks you if you would like to apply settings to sub-folders, then yes apply changes to sub-items.
Let me know if this helped you out.

I am applying a solution to take backup from clients machine to a shared folder location, the share management will be done through their AD accounts through a backup application.

However, I want to prevent user from accessing the shared folder location and deleting contents
it would be possible to use another account for shared file access but am looking for better option.

if Anything from the following can be done it should be great:
- Modifying permissions to allow writing and modifying content but not deleting
- Disable web access to shared location through windows explorer
- Only allowing access to shared location through the backup application in any way
Really appreciate any help.

A:Shared folder, write but not delete

not done any Active Directory work for a while but I'm sure the delete permission was separate so a deny could be applied the the delete for the group concerned who would have the other permissions, you would need to check the stacking of the actual permissions to be sure though, a deny is a dangerous thing for sysdmins as you often forget what groups you've assigned yourself as for testing

Also it's worth having a look at Sysinternals as I think they still have some advanced AD tools

As most of the others should be possible through normal NTFS permissions and even the parental controls it should be possible using Group Policy

Hi,

I notice in Windows 8 slight changes have been made to where screen shots are written to. In previous versions of windows they've always been written to the clipboard with each additional screenshot being overwritten but now in windows 8 they appear to be written and stored in a folder which means you can take multiple screenshots without the previous one being overwritten.

I want to know if it's possible to make that feature available in windows 7 since it was a big leap for me to upgrade from XP and if it wasn't for carrying features over from XP I wouldn't have upgraded ie T800's Folder Options X It would be really neat if they could add that to their utility

Do you have to scan the folder - check for errors like in my 500GB Seagate USB external disk drive?

I just wish to put some other data on the disk and able to transfer to another computer.

I have a simple question to which I cannot get a simple answer.

I went to My Computer (XP), double clicked on my MP3 Player drive icon,
double clicked on the Internet Storage icon and then came to several folders, including the Music folder. I double clicked on Music folder and several sub folders came to the screen including a PLAYLISTS FOLDER. The problem is that the Playlists folder has several files which I did NOT create, labelled Playlist (1), (2) and (3).

I deleted Playlist (1) with no problem, however, when I went to delete Playlist (2) and Playlist (3) a message came up that it:

" cannot be deleted because it is write protected. Remove the write protection".

Another terrific Microsoft message which doesn't tell you what to do, which is why I will shortly install Linux on my computer.

I tried to get help in the "help" file, which is generally useless. It is not even listed in the glossary under "write protection" how to do this.

I went to the "help" file in Microsoft Word. It says to select the tools menu and click the option which says remove write protection. The only problem, is that this seems to only apply to this word processor, because when I click "tools" on the menu above the above folder opened in My Computer, there is no such option.

I clicked on "properties" for the folder.....no option there either.

A:How do I remove "write protection" from a sub folder on a drive in My Computer?

Well...what you describe is unusual...and Microsoft has nothing to do with the manner in which a manufacturer sets up the native folders on an .mp3 player.

My experience with such folders (any and all) is that they are deleteable, like any other file.

If the folders cannot be deleted in either normal or safe mode...I would simply do firmware update. Should be avaiable at website of player maker.

You could also try a product like Revo Uninstaller.

You could also entertain the idea that...the folders may be viewed that way because of some problem with the drive (such as bad sectors) and try to run the chkdsk /r command on the player from My Computer/Properties.

Hello everyone,

I've been struggling with this issues for some weeks now and I have nowhere to go...

I have found many (really many) tickets with similar problem, but none had the same scenario and none of the proposed solutions worked for me.

Here it goes:

My COMPANY has a project that is a joint venture with a partner and we have employees from both sides. Therefore, we must have both networks available for the project. But, only one fileserver.

This fileserver one network interface my company's network and one on the partner's network.

But, the authentication  to access the folders is only at the AD of the partner which is in another domain.

So, when we map (manually) the network drive T: we choose to use different credentials.

Some weeks ago all the computers from my company's network stopped writeing on the network drive T: and got the following error:

"<mapped drive letter>\ refers to a location that is unavailable. It could be on a hard drive on this computer, or on a network. Check to make sure that the disk is properly inserted, or that you are connected to the
Internet or your network, and then try again. If it still cannot be located, the information might have been moved to a different location."
None of the computers on the partner's network have this issue and none of the other network drives on my company's computers have this issue.

I tried unchecking read only.
When apply and look it is back to read only.

How can I make this read and write permission?

A:public tv folder read only? mythtv needs read write persmissions

You can do this by going into the C:>Users>Public folder properties, click the Sharing tab then click on the Advanced Sharing button showing in the first picture.

Click the box to share the folder like in the second picture, at that point the Permissions button will light up.

Click the permissions button, Add check marks for full control "third picture" then hit the Apply button, on all windows click Ok etc.

At this point the Public folder and it's subfolder will have read/write access.

New dv6-7000 laptop (Win7 64-bit) has a problem I can't seem to solve:  When using any SDHC memory card you cannot write or erase files to the card.  You can read the files just fine, but you get a "Write Protected" error when trying to write or erase.   The card is, of course, not write protected, and can be written to in several other laptop/desktop SD drives that I've tried.   And I've tried different brands/sizes of SDHC cards.  Smaller capacity regular SD cards work just fine.   I tried removing this device and rebooting to reinstall the hardware, but no help. The Realtek SD Driver shows as version 6.1.7600.16385 in Device Manager properties, dated 6/20/06.  HP's support site shows a newer driver version 6.1.7601.29005 dated 2/24/12.  When I download and run sp56166.exe to update the driver, it seems to go through the update process successfully. But the driver still shows as the older version in Device Manager.  And, of course, the problem still exists.  Any ideas would be much appreciated!  Hard to believe that a new dv6 laptop can't properly write or erase files from High Capacity SDHC memory cards.   Thank you!

A:dv6-7000 can't write to SDHC cards ("write protected" error)

I understand high capacity SD cards return the message they are write protected in your system.

I take it the write protect switch is in the off/disable position on the card since they work in other systems.

What is the product number?

NOTE: Do NOT provide the serial number.

What brand and model is the SDHC card?

I am trying to write disk to my model of dvd¬ plds+dvd-rw+ds8a9sh el3a firmware¬  but on the wndows 10 and windows 7 ultimate I am getting the same error that write process goes very fast and ends with fail. I am using the normal cd writing way provided by both windows.
the firmware utility says that there is no update needed for the el3a as it is the latest one.
in the even viewer I am getting the same error ""error 7 ,rom0 device has a bad block" .
when I am using bios built in function of Lenovo it passes the test successfully but when try to write using above of the operating systems then it says that above error in both of these. the dxdiag command result is as follows.

some files are here.

Mod's Edit: System model added to the front of Subject line to improve visibility / clarity and moved post to a model specific forum.

A:B590 - dvd rom write test works but failed to write disk

It looks that it is firmware error after trying all the tests. But there is no firmware on the manufacturer webisit(LENOVO) or PLDS manufacturer(DVD ROM) website.Any suggestions.

Hello,
I am unable to write/modify/replace files in the Program Files or Program Files (x86) folders, we have folder that is placed in Program Files folder, lets say MES folder
we use Active Directory System and all user take file from FTP server if there's Program's Update from System that I make, so new file/files will replace old file/files in MES folder, it was work smoothly in Windows 7 Pro, but not in Windows 8.1 Pro
the things I already do was :
1. Change User Account Control Settings to Never Notify (lowest)
2. Turn Off Windows Firewall setting (Domain, Network Location, Public Network)
3. Change advanced security add local user for Full control, modify, read and execute (to take ownership and grant full control permission of the folder and all contents in it)
I Know from forum it must be about user security issue but this 3 steps still not change anything
How can I defeat this?

Many thanks.
Regards
Michael H.

Hi
about cortana , can it write an email , i mean the body and can i use to use it and write a word document

because i bought word 2010 ,that's pretty old
thanks

A:can cortana write an email or can i use to write with microsoft word?

Cortana is essentially a search tool. It's a bit of a toy (my personal opinion!) which attempts (sometimes) to give a slightly intelligent answer to a very limited range and format of questions, otherwise simply opening your browser and launching a search.

It can recognise speech as well.

It can also search your indexed files and folders.

It also gives some sometimes amusing answers set up by MS to silly questions.

So no, it's not a word processor, nor is it an email client.

If you're worried about the age of your office suite, I wouldn't particularly, unless there's a particular document type you need which it doesn't support. You can always use one of the free office suites, or one of the many free word processors if you prefer.

I almost never prepare text for emails in a separate word processor, unless it's to be attached as a document.

Hope that helps.

Hey all,

I am having an issue with a Western Digital 320Gb SataII drive that I purchased a little while back. The store I purchased it from insists that there is nothing wrong with the drive, but I think there has to be?
The first time it happened, I was downloading files from a P2P application. Failed to write to disk on the partition and something along the lines of G:/$mft kepy popping up(I guess to do with the boot table on the disk?). Figured that there was just an error, so I ran a chkdsk, but it didn't find anything. I rebooted the comp, and tried chkdsk again, but this time it couldn't access the partition. I had a couple more errors or problems with it (tried partition magic, but that wouldnt even open because the partition table was screwed up or something), so I decided to backup and then format the partition. Great, everything eventually worked again, and I copied everything back.

A couple of days later, I was copying some files over, and I had the same issue again, random popup saying something like "failed to write to disk - delayed write failed" and then my system crashed and I rebooted. Couldnt access the partition when I tried to chkdsk again. However, I still cannot find any bad sectors on it when I finally managed to get chkdsk working again (after a couple more reboots). It also took me three reboots/tries to get an image of the disk because it had problems reading it.

Is there any way I could convince the retailer that there is s... Read more

A:Failed to Write to Disk - Delayed Write

Well what you need to do is get a copy of Diskeeper. Go to www.diskeeper.com and get a trial version. Then you open that up, and analize the drive your having trouble with. Soon you can go into your options and run a program in there called Frag Shield or something like that. That will change your MTF size to a proper size (Cheoose Recommended settings) and the problems will go away. I had the same thing happen to my old 250 GB drive. But that should take care of everything.
