How do I know what to upgrade/repair on laptop for game to function well?

Q: How do I know what to upgrade/repair on laptop for game to function well?

My son recently bought himself Skyrim for his HP Probook4525a laptop (which he also bought himself, so it's not top of the line). He said that it doesn't play well, glitches or freezes. He has tried reinstalling it a couple of times.

I see that it requires 2gb ram, but his laptop shows 1.8gb. So I assumed that means I should add ram. My brother told me he needs a new hard drive or video card. How the heck do you know what to add or change?

I tried scanning at crucial.com but after I open the download nothing happens. No results, nothing.

Preferred Solution: How do I know what to upgrade/repair on laptop for game to function well?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: How do I know what to upgrade/repair on laptop for game to function well?

using the laptop in question go here; http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri
select Skyrim from the games menu and run a test. It will point out the areas that fall short. (with the java problems of late, you may want to download and install the test scanner if you have Java disabled)

also, the 1.8 gigs shown does mean 2 gigs. just the way computers read the bits and stuff. Also might not be showing the chunk of Ram it took for video memory. (All depends on what is in the system specs.)
More ram would help, but for heavy 3D games usually a graphics card is the best option.

Think TSG has a system analyzer, might want to run that on the laptop so we can see what is in it.

A:Is 'Upgrade install even meant to function as a repair install at all?

In Windows 7, a repair install is also known as an "in-place upgrade install". This tutorial explains how to perform a repair install and also shows how to obtain a legal installation disk if one is needed.

Repair Install

I've successfully repaired several Windows 7 machines and in each case it took less than 90 minutes. After completing the process it will be necessary to reinstall Windows Updates. That could take another 90 minutes or more depending on how many updates are available.

Some folks prefer doing a clean install just to get rid of the factory bloatware and start off with a wiped hard drive. One of the Forum experts prepared a tutorial on how to clean reinstall a factory OEM machine.

And the basic clean install tutorial.

well, the xp cd has the repair stuff on it you could try(if its not booting properly or at all). Dont know exactly what it does but i know its there. You just pop the cd in, start up the computer(make sure it boots off of cd ie cd before ide-0 in bios) and pretend your making a fresh install and somewhere along the way it will ask if you want to fix a current xp install(or something like that). I have a version of windows XP Home where the boot up is corrupted or damaged. What happens is that the system trys to reboot when it gets to the screen that indicates that it has not been properly shut down.

As there are some personal files on the drive I want to keep I have been trying to use the Windows XP Home Edition Repair function.

I have been trying to use the command to restore the files that I found in Windows XP Professional Help

"msiexec /f[p][o][e][d][c][a][m][v]"

When I try this command the system doesn't recognize it.

The system has a NTFS File system so a boot disk to read my files hasn't helped me

Does Windows XP Home have a different command for this function?

Any help I can get to resolve this problem and recover my personal files would be much appreciated.

Cannot Repair Windows 7, 64 bit, with Disk provided with computer.

My problem started with right clicking on a remote drive and hoping to view the Properties of the drive. I got that infamous "Windows explorer has stopped working" message.

I tried most of the solutions listed on the forum to no avail.

As a last resort I was going to use the disk provided and access the repair capability. That did come up but when selected I got the message "This version of System Recovery Options in not compatible with the version of windows you are trying to repair. Try using a recovery disc that is compatible with this version of windows".

Has anyone run into this? Other than the above everything seems to function OK.

I do use MS Security Essentials and Spybot Home.

Thanks in advance

Is this a pre-built system or a home built PC? If it's pre-built (DELL, HP, etc) turn off the PC and restart, as soon as you turn the power on press F8 repeatedly until you get to the alternate boot menu. There should be an option to Repair Computer which should allow you to access the repair function.

Hey guys... I have some problems with IE6.0... it won't let me log into my web-based email accounts...

I keep getting an "intrusion detected" notices (even if I ask to "expire page views" at login).

so I want to REPAIR IE6.0 using the ADD/REMOVE option in Control Panel, and then Click REPAIR.

I tried to re-install IE6.0 from the Add/Remove Programs dialogue.... BUT my computer came pre-installed with IE6.0 (I'm using windows XP), so the Add/Remove IE6.0 option is not there.

So how do I start the Repair IE6.0 option if the Uninstall/Add/Remove button is not there????

Please help.

A:How do you start IE6.0 REPAIR Function in Windows XP???

There isn't a IE repair option with XP/6.0.

But what are these 'intrusion notices' you're receiving?
They probably don't point to anything being wrong with IE itself.

I started up my laptop the other morning an just as windows is loading a BSOD flashes for a millisecond and then the computer restarts. It did this 5 times in a row before I finally gave up. I found the windows vista cd that came with the computer and booted from it. Once the DVD loaded I clicked accept and it took me straight to a new install with no repair function which should be included on the recovery disc. I rebooted multiple times, here is no repair option. To make matters worse, I only have 5.9 gigs free on my hd and vista requires 6.6 to install. The only option I have is to reformat the drive, which is out of the question as I have lots of documents saved that I cannot lose. So at the moment the recovery DVD is useless to me, and I cannot load windows to delete some files to make room for a new install.

I took a video of the loading screen and was able to pause it at the frame when the BSOD flashes, here is the stop message: STOP: 0xc0000005, 0x00000200, 0x83354964.

I tried removing one stick of ram at a time thinking maybe one had gone bad it didn't make a difference. I'm at a loss right now. No matter how I try to load windows, safe mode, etc, I get a BSOD and it restarts, and my windows recovery DVD is useless with my hd nearly full.

A:BSOD during startup, no repair function on recovery cd

Nobody? There's no way to delete files/folders without using the command prompt on the recovery disc?

This really makes no sense and I'm beyond frustrated. Why is there no repair selection when I boot from the vista DVD.

Dear Everyone,

Sorry to trouble all of you, but I've pretty much exhausted my google-fu. Thus, I figured that I should stop trying to throw things against the wall, and rather just see if there's someone wiser here who can help me out. Now, before you tell me, I am totally aware that I could easily cut my losses just by doing a re-install, which would make the Windows.Old folder and such, most of which can be easily put back via a command prompt script. However, being that this computer has software whose installation disks I do not have, I do NOT want to do a re-install, since it'll break program association and possibly other things which I cannot correct by re-installing them.

I am terrified of losing all my files so I don't want to toy around with anything. Thoughts?

A:Startup Repair on laptop cannot repair computer automatically.

Welcome DelaneyNicole.

Sounds like a shame that you do not have a backup of your files.

Some things you could try:
> Try accessing windows repair from boot (press F8 and select the recovery option),
> Borrow a disc drive from another system (maybe a friends?),
> Use a bootable USB drive with say some version of Linux on it to access your files.

Do you know what happens to cause this problem?

HI guys

Long time lurker, first time poster. I?ve been driven to post by an issue with the Refresh Windows option since the update to 8.1 I cannot find a viable solution.

I am sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but I cannot find it if so!

It appears to me that the Refresh Windows function is broken for those of us who upgraded from 8 to 8.1 for free via the start screen Windows Store.

When I tried to run Refresh on two of my 8.1 machines it failed, responding with the error message ?files are missing, insert your recovery drive or installation media? or similar.

However, if you have upgraded via the Store, neither your original W8 installation disk NOR a newly created recovery drive will work. If you try to use either, windows will tell you the media is invalid.

Research and fault finding indicates that the refresh function won?t work because of a product key conflict.
From what I can tell this is because:
When you upgrade from 8 to 8.1 through the store you don?t create an ISO or receive an updated product key.

If you have upgraded via the store, Refresh will tell you files are missing, as above. If you use your original 8 installation media as windows directs you to, it will fail because the product key is no longer valid.

If you create a new recovery drive on your updated 8.1 machine, again this will not work ? Refresh will say the disk is invalid. Again I suspect this is a product key issue.

Trying to find and use a Windows product key on my machin... Read more

A:Refresh function broken since upgrade to 8.1

It is a very handy feature indeed. Assuming that your PC is working now and when you want to refresh you want to refresh to 8.1 with whatever you have installed today then do this Refresh Windows 8 - Create and Use Custom Recovery Image

This will refresh back to your current state which (assuming it is OK) is more useful than going back to 8.

Is this what you are after or do you want refresh to (somehow) downgrade you to 8 again?

Hi all,

Recovery - the PC could not properly start 0xc0000001 Recovery - PC / device needs to be repaired. It can be not loaded properly the BitLocker key. 0xc210000
After this I disabled the TPM chip in the BIOS. I could start Windows using the recovery key. I reseted the TPM chip - no improvement then disables BitLocker and reactivated, there is now also the message that the TPM could not be used. At the TPM MSC the chip is available.
Currently i have TPM Version 1.2, according to MSFT Website it's supported. But i can't change the Version to 2.0 with the Dell Tool. I get the following error codes:

A:Qosmio X770 loss of function key after Win 10 upgrade

Best option is to clean install it, chuck out all the Toshiba bloat including all the so-called eco stuff and do power management via Windows. Trust me it runs a whole lot better. I was forced into a clean install after the SSD failed recently. Amazingly Windows took care of all the drivers on my X870 and the laptop is functioning perfectly, my only concern is CPU temps which seem to be too high, maxing out at 90 degrees during games but about to strip down and redo the heatsink paste on the CPU/GPU cooler. GPU temps are OK, around 75 degrees max.

However, downside for me was some of the F keys no longer work. WiFi does but is now just WiFi/Bluetooth on/off, speaker volume, mute, display and display brightness all work but touchpad on/off doesn't. Media keys don't appear to work either (play/pause, track skip) Plus only the display brightness, volume and multi display keys have a graphic, none of the others do.

Toshiba doesn't support Windows 10 for anything earlier than X-70A. Disgraceful when you pay so much for these Qosmios. Won't be buying Toshiba again when the X870 dies, not only do I think it's a disgrace not to offer better support on flagship products like the Qosmio series, the X-70B is now little more than a toy with it's AMD R9 M365X GPU, no more powerful than a Geforce 940M!

I've got a problem using Windows 7 on a Tecra S4 notebook:
After installing of all the available drivers (most dedicated for Windows Vista 32 bit, but working) there's still a problem adjusting the brightness of the display:

After Installing the value added package, th Fn-buttons are working, but not Fn-F6 and Fn-F7 for adjusting the brightness.

Pressing this button, there is a reaction in moving the slider on the screen (only 3 positions 0% - 40% - 100%), the brightness 'sun' displayed in Windows XP when changing brightness had 8 positions), but nothing happens. Moving the slider by mouse action, it's exactly the same behaviour. Slider can be moved, but nothing happens. The monitor backlight is always maximum powered.

Does anybody know what to do?
I'd like to change from Windows XP to Windows 7 completely on this device, but this requires for me all the basic functions have to work.

Yesterday I went to play a Steam game I haven't played in a few months. Since I haven't had Steam on during this time, it decided I needed to update a number of things, which included installing the 2013 version of the game. While it was doing this I got a BSOD, and now I can't get to my desktop or login screen or load startup repair.

Things I have tried:

1 - Attempt to boot in safe mode (with or without command prompt or networking) this got me past the login screen to a black abyss once, normally it gets stuck around the file ahcix64s.sys. Yes, I have read some guides on how to get around the ahcix64s.sys problem, but all of the guides I've found assume you can make it to the desktop or startup repair.

2 - Launch Startup Repair. It will not load from the computer (load bar gets completely stuck) and loading it from the install disc just tells me Startup Repair cannot fix anything because it is offline.

3 - Try things like chkdsk and sfc /scannow in command prompt when I could still load the install disc. Didn't yield any useful information, just told me I either couldn't do these checks or they were already happening and I can't get the results because things are offline.

4 - A friend installed Ubuntu on a flashdrive and we attempted to boot to the computer image on that flashdrive, but apparently with this particular motherboard you can't boot from a flashdrive.

I'm running out of ideas, best option at this point seems to be grab the hard drive from the upstairs comp... Read more

I purchased a Satellite S50-B-15N just a few months ago which came with Windows 8.1 and decided to do the upgrade to Windows 10 about two months ago. Initially the laptop worked fine but over the past few weeks it has been having various issues with the keyboard, trackpad, and function keys.

Keyboard: Sometimes the laptop will boot and the keyboard detects no input whatsoever. A few restarts fixes the problem. If I hold down backspace to delete multiple characters only one character is deleted upon a single click of backspace, I cannot hold it down to quickly delete multiple words.

Trackpad: Similarly to the keyboard sometimes upon boot it just doesn't work. I am forced to use the keyboard to access device manager where I have to roll back the trackpad driver for it to start working again on next reboot.

Function Keys: All top row keys on the laptop (brightness, volume, track selection, etc) do not work at all. I am able to hold down 'FN' and select an F key such as F5, but other keys are completely unresponsive.
I have attempted reading forums for solutions, and I've gone to Toshiba's driver page and installed all the Windows 10 drivers for my laptop, so far nothing has worked. Is there anything I can do to make the laptop work properly with Windows 10?

I needed to "repair" my Win7 Home Prem 64-bit (OEM) because optical drives could no longer write. sfc /scannow found nothing. So I chose upgrade in place because the idea of re-installing everything would be too disruptive and shouldn't be needed for this kind of problem. I had Kaspersky AV turned off. I was "upgrading" within Windows, as suggested here in Brink's tutorial and would not change versions.

After finding all the 550,000 files the upgrade process started to expand Windows files. The computer restarted right away after the beginning of that process but it went to the log-in and put up a message stating that "This version of Windows could not be installed." Nothing has changed on my mobo since the original install except a flash of a new BIOS version from Gigabyte. In fact, recently (but before the BIOS was flashed) I did re-install Win 7 from scratch (clean) and that went off without a hitch. As suggested in the message box I looked at the "Upgrade Adviser" pages but nothing seemed to be about this issue: same Win7 and same install DVD as its last clean install.

Any suggestions? I had considered fixWin before doing this, but sfc /scannow seemd like the stongest tool in its arsenal and I already did that and found nothing.

Thanks, in advance, for any suggestions.

A:Upgrade/repair stopped mid-upgrade. Why?

Hello jonathan7007, welcome to Seven Forums!

"because optical drives could no longer write"

To me, this doesn't seem like a Windows issue.

Hi: I upgraded from Win 7HP and everything went well.  After a few weeks(and I assume an update) I cannot use the start menu or the search bar/ Cortana. I have to right click it to be able shut down or access control panel. No apps are accessible
either.  I don't get the start menu/smart screen tab when I go to settings either.

After updating to windows 10 I had a few minor problems with the start menu and ran a fix tool to get this working. This tool seems to have broken the sound and wifi (it now won't turn on and cannot detect any sound devices). I tried to do a restore but I misread and seemed to select an option which deleted all the installed software and this has now removed all the initial software from Toshiba.

As such I have a fairly major problem... I could just restore my factory setting but I am not keen to do so and I have been very lax with backups of all but the most important files. Is there anywhere to download the original toshiba software so I can restore all this functionality?

Interesting issue. Have a Win7 x64 ultimate oem box, lost the original key, replaced motherboard, cpu, bought a retail copy and key, used the key to activate to get the nag screens without using a program to circumvent. This was a couple years ago.

I can't do an in place upgrade/repair. The option for "upgrade" never shows up. It will allow me to install on any of my hdd or in a new folder on my ssd. The system as a whole is usable and has no major issue that I can see other than this one. It may also be notable that the installation DOES NOT check for updates before moving on to the license agreement and partition check.

It will not upgrade to 10, either. It gets as far as setting up temporary files then crashes to the desktop. The reason behind the 7 reinstallation was to correct any issues with the OS that may be causing the 10 installation issue.

Any ideas? I've done the basics, malware free, chkdsk, my checksur log is pretty f-ed up for windows updates. I'm thinking that's probably not the cause, however.

A:Overlay/repair/in place upgrade - no "upgrade" option

Hello fxdmusic Welcome to the Seven Forums! No upgrade to repair option?

Well I won't recommend a repair of the present installation but seeing a fresh copy of 7 go on and grabbing SP1 required if you are planning to move onto to W10! Presently I have a working dual boot of both 7 and 10 across two separate hard drives where the second first seeing a clone of the previous 7 host drive now set as the second in 10's BCD boot order had failed on the spot to see the upgrade go on! What?

Following the failed first few attempts where the clone was thought to be the problem preventing the upgrade from completion when just after the first restart once the setup files had been copied to the drive from the usb installation key the Media Creation tool first used and later a 3rd party program for seeing another iso single not combination 32/64bit for 10 Pro that went onto a 16gb flash drive but seeing both 32bit and 64bit downloads the 32bit for a planned VM project later it wasn't either usb key or the second fresh install of 7 to the second drive.

But?! it was discovered that two storage and backup drives were what were seeing the newer version's boot files and temporary set up folders placed on them! Do you have any other hard drives internal or external plugged in while trying to upgrade? Unplug those before trying again!

Before I ended up taking a good look at the clean install guide seen at Ten Forums one of the other sites seen at Windows 10 Tutorials[2]=Installation%20and... Read more

When I bought my ASUS laptop it came with Windows Vista. I recently upgraded to Windows 7 and certain function keys (such as the ones used for volume control) stopped working. The strange thing is that some function keys still work like the ones that control the screen brightness. Please Help.

A:How do I fix the function key on my ASUS laptop

It's probably a driver issue. Go to the ASUS website and see if they have drivers for Windows 7. If they do, download and install them and you should be good to go. If not, you may not be able to get those special keys working.

HP Stream Notebook does not work anymore. All I get is a black screen.

A:Laptop does not function anymore

Things to try: Check if the charge light comes on when plugging in the charger.Check that all lights go out when powering off indicating it is fully powered off.If the lights will not go off, leave it unplugged from the charger until the battery fully discharges.Plug in a TV into the HDMI port to check for a display there.Hold down the Windows logo key plus the B key when powering up to reset the BIOS.

Morning all
I have somehow altered the setting on my laptop keyboard so that when I am typing, my laptop uses the numeric instead of the alpha. (the keyboard has shared alpha / numeric keys that so that the numerics are accessed when you hold down the Fumction key). However, the numerics have become the primary function instead. How do I change this back so that the alpha keys remain the primary function ? Thanks - Its driving me mad !

A:Laptop function keys

There should be a fn lock on your keyboard somewhere.

A:Game Upgrade

Welcome to the forums.

TBH - Your system specs are too low to run such a modern game.

The min requirements cited by games companies, are themselves on the low side ... they possibly could run their own game, with every setting turned down - but then what satisfaction would there be, with everything chugging along at a snail's pace ?

That notwithstanding, you will need a higher spec system to run this game.

hello. im new to this board and hope maybe someone can help me. i have an old Dell CPX latitude laptop. it has windows XP on it. i mainly use it for internet since its old and slows down when i do much else. it always works fine til today. heres what happened, i was online with it and had forgot to plug it in. by the time the laptop told me the battery was about to die, it pretty much just shut off on me, no biggie has happened before..NOW when i restart it, it will not recognize my wireless lan adapter or even recognize it connects wirelessly at all.

when i open network connections the window is empty, also the icon in the bottom that would show my wirless connectiion and signal strength is gone. i have tried starting a new connection but it wont even recognize it is wireless. the lan adapter itself (Cisco Aironet 350 series) lights up and the the status and activity lights continue to work, but when i insert it in and out, my laptop wont recognize it at all. it does this in both slots for a LAN adapter

also, when i try to go into device managers, none of my devices show up just a blank window. could the loss of power and shutdown have done something to cause all this? again it has happened a lot (battery dies and laptop just shuts off) and ive never had this problem. any help would be great..thanks for taking time to read this

also i dont think its a issue with my wireless router, as my Wii and xbox360 connect wirelessly to the same router and have been working fine.

My laptop used to have Bluetooth, but it seems to have disappeared. When I go to the Settings > Devices > Bluetooth and Other Devices, it has the "add a bluetooth device option, but there is no longer a switch to turn the Bluetooth on. I checked Services and made sure all the Bluetooth services were running. Some were not, so I turned them on, but it did not help.

There is a Bluetooth section in the Device Manager, though it's "events" tab says it migrated and requested an install (I have no idea what that means, but I've attached some images). When I run the Windows Troubleshooter for the Bluetooth, it says this device is not bluetooth capable. I know it used to be! Plus, if it were not, why would there be Bluetooth stuff in the device manager?

Does anyone have any idea what could have happened, and how I can fix this?

What to do?

I'm sure you must be doing this.

But are you first highlighting the text that you want to Ctrl C ?
Or at least placing the cursor in the text area
