Q: pc starts but monitor wont

hi and thanks in advance. i have an HP a6152n. ive had it for about a year and yesterday my brother's (who has the same PC) PSU went out. i wanted to make sure that was the problem so i used mine to test it. when i go to put it back into my computer the pc powers on. the fans spin on the cpu the video card and on the side of the case. but the monitor shows no activity, the keyboard only flashes and mouse doesnt work. i have tried the ram test to and i got beeps out of the mother board. i also tested the swapped out the video card but so far nothing has worked. i also reset the bios to see if that would work. i even bought a new power supply (gave the old one to my brother) if any of you have any more sugestions i would really appreciate it

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It must be the motherboard right? I just bought motherboard 4 months ago.

Have you tried a different monitor, al though you say it works on your friends you also say it's intermittent, it could simply be that the monitor is faulty and moving it cures the problem.

I just repaired my computer that was shocked and fried in an electric storm 2 months ago, And now its been 3 days and whenever I start it up it goes to the windows logo and shows it loading but right before it goes into the account select screen it just stops loading! I've tried everything, safe mode, start it last time it worked, start it normally, and I even repaired all my files.

Any ideas?

Well the obvious answer is that the computer is not "repaired".

What fried and what did you do about it ?

I am trying to fix a friends laptop, a Sony Vaio running Vista home premium. The problem is that after booting you can start 5 or 6 programs by clicking on the icons after that you cannot start any programs. I have scanned the machine with Malwarebytes and avg and the pctools pctuneup onetime fix, I have also manually found and removed a couple of malware programs and used msconfig and regedit to look for anything suspicious. ( I am an electronics engineer and also write software so not computer illiterate). If I boot up to safe mode programs run normally. Any suggestions as to what is causing this?

Hi,
I have been using my computer for the last 3 years. The last hardware I changed on it was my graphics card about half a year ago. It was working fine earlier about 12 hours ago; due to a power outage it was off for about 8 hours. The power has since come on, but the computer will not start up properly. As the title suggests, the computer will start up (fans, lights) and the CD drive will open and close but it doesn't seem to acknowledge the monitor, mouse, or keyboard (none of them turn on at all).

So far, I have verified that it is the computer and not the monitor by testing the monitor on a different computer. I have reseated the graphics card and have tried starting up the computer with everything except the monitor unplugged. I'm at a bit of a loss because a lot of my troubleshooting options are limited by not being able to see anything on the screen.

The power outage is really the only thing that has "changed" since the computer was in perfect working condition; I have not installed any new software recently.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance.

OS: Windows 7 64bit
CPU: (Quad-Core)Intel Core 2 Extreme
MOTHERBOARD: (Quad-Core FSB1333) Asus P5N32-E nForce 680i SLI Chipset LGA775 FSB1333 DDR2 Mainboard
POWERSUPPLY: Thermaltake ToughPower 1,000 Watts Power Supply (about 1 year old)
VIDEO: ATI Radeon HD 5770 (just one)
MEMORY: (Req.DDR2 MainBoard)4GB (2x2GB)

A:Computer starts up, monitor does not

Hi, you can have a try with the method below:
1.Please first check your PC power, maybe the power of monitor, mouse and keyboard have some problem although the fans and lights can work. Because the power outage will sometimes lead to insufficient power supply.
2.you can replace a new Graphics card to see whether the previous card has some problem.
Hope works.
Regards.

A:monitor starts up and goes blank

Have you tried connecting a different monitor to that Dell Dimension 3000 desktop to see if the same thing happens or if the monitor stays on?

At this point, it appears to be the integrated graphics/video card - or - the monitor - or - the cable that connects the two.

First thing to check are the cables to the monitor..

It could also be buggy power management (better turn it off in system BIOS completely) or a dodgy vid card.

This is not a big problem, more of a nusance.

At times, when I turn on one of my monitors, it is blue and will not recover until I turn it off and on a few times. It will eventually return to normal colors.

I have taken to leaving it on (it will suspend) when I power down the machine. This so far has worked.

Anyone have similar trouble and did you resolve it?

Hi,

Over the past few weeks, when i went to turn on my PC it would start for anywhere in between 1 and 4 seconds and then completely turn off. After a few tries though, it would stay on. But today, after many tries it doesn't stay on.

When i start it, all fans, lights, drives turn on/light up then 1-5 seconds later everything just turns off completley. It doesnt even get to the point where it makes that beep sound. I thought it might be my power supply, but i bought a brand new one only a few months ago. i've tried reseating the RAM, cleaning the motherboard area, re-connecting wires/cables but nothing is fixing it.

Anyone have any ideas what this could be?

Here my keyboard is non responsive. I've had this issue before and used to solve it with windows restore settings to a previous date through safe mode, however this time i can't get into safe mode because clever windows felt like making it so secure.
Also the option of going back to previously good settings after pressing F8 desnt help. I've tried all sorts of boot disks made on my other computer but nothing seems to get it to that BIOS screen. As i said the buttons work before windows starts up just i cant do anything useful with them. About a week ago I was playing Fallout:NV when all of a sudden my monitor went black (I can't recall if the game was still running or not). I restarted my computer and all seemed fine; so I started the game up only to have it go dark again a few seconds later. Frustrated and tired, I figured I'd leave it until the next day to try and solve it. Only the next time I powered my computer up, I got the "No signal to monitor" and an abnormal post beep but I could hear Windows XP starting fine. I checked all the cord and wire connections and reseated my msi 8800gts, none of which helped. I assumed my gts had bit the dust, so I went and bought a pny 9800gt that night and after installing it, everything worked fine. Normal post beep, monitor worked, and no crashing in Fallout for the few minutes I played.

Ofcourse though, I was disappointed in buying something that was marginally of lesser quality then my last card, so I went back to BestBuy the next day and returned the card for a Galaxy GTX 460 (786mb). After installing it and powering up, I was greeted by the "No signal to monitor" message again but I could still hear Windows start. I checked the connections again and reseated the card like before. This time though, it entered a power up and down loop for a few seconds until it would finally abnormally beep.

I thought it may all be because of my OCZ 500w psu, so I went on newegg and bought a 750w Corsair, since everything worked fine when the card di... Read more

I have 2 weird things in a row this morning and I was hoping to get some opinions. I was the last one out of the office last night and the first one in this morning. I come in and my office door is locked. It is never locked and I never lock it. So once in my office I wake my computer and Resource Monitor is running on my PC and I didn't even know this program existed.

So I understand Resource Monitor is a common tool that I just never noticed before but is it possible that it started itself?

To come in to find a program running on my computer that I have never opened before is pretty weird. I also do not share this computer with anyone else.

I understand the locked door and this program may be unrelated but I need some assistance to debunk conspiracy theories.

Thanks!

Possibly an IT person was called in? Use Resource Monitor to see if all is correct here:

In the power settings, I set the monitor off time to 10 minutes.

When I get away from my computer more than 10 minutes, an invisible program starts running. It uses harddisk like crazy, and I also hear the CPU fan working faster.

I used "Process Explorer" to detect this program. I see a "svchost.exe" terminating in the last second as soon as I turn the monitor on by a mouse move or keyboard input. Unfortunately I am not able to see the parent process because it terminates immediately when the monitor turns on.

How can I detect this suspicious program?

It might just be the Windows Indexing Service. Have you enabled or installed any "Folding at Home" software? That will use your computer for various number crunching tasks devoted to science during periods of no use. I'm not sure if ATI still has that "Folding" option when you install the drivers, but you may have installed it when you installed the ATI driver package. I've never installed it, but it's either a startup program or a service you can disable.

-removed power from pc, pressing the power button for 30 sec, and starting it up again.

-monitor works fine, tried other pc on it.

-different cables, different sockets

-cleaned the pc inside

-checked for loose connections

-took the ram out and cleaned them

-took that battery thing out for 1 hour, to reset the bios something

It seems to Work all fine, except that theres no picture. I even heard a Windows sound from the monitor (tv screen with hdmi cable), so i guess that the pc is actually running fine, i just cant see anything. It even reacted to that reset, so i guess that i did it Right, but it didnt solve it..

Hey, I'm using Windows Vista and when I startup my pc I can see the windows loading image but the moment windows starts up the screen goes into standby mode and wont come out of it even if I turn on and off the monitor.

I googled the problem and it definitely seems that my graphics card is the problem. I have a Geforce 7900. I started up the pc in safe mode which worked and uninstalled the cards drivers from the device manager. I then reboot and windows works fine except now I've no graphics card installed. It pops up automatically to install drivers which I allow and then asks to reboot. However, on reboot the same problem arises. Monitor goes straight into standby mode.

I've tried this many times, I tried uninstalling the drivers from the add/remove programs list and tried installing the drivers with the setup utility I downloaded straight off the nvidia website but I keep getting the same result.

I also tried the actual dell drivers straight from their site using my code but when I run the setup all I get is this.

img81.imageshack.us/img81/6289/68197825dw0.jpg

I am out of ideas.

Has anyone got any suggestions as to solution? I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Are you getting the right drivers for your video card? Make sure if you have an onboard video card that its disabled in the BIOS. I can't really think of much since you tried certain things. If nothing helps I'd try calling NVIDIA or Dell.

Sound familiar, anyone? Well I just saw this same kind of thread over in the XP place.
Let me tell you what happened and then where I am now.
Last night I was having trouble with Punkbuster while playing Call of Duty 4. I reinstalled it tons or times and it just wouldn't work (a whole other story is in there). Well I restarted my computer and right after the Windows bars for loading disappeared, my monitor lost the signal. I have done a ton of work and research so far as to why it is happening. I also reformatted my hard drive and reinstalled Windows. I have a Geforce 8800 GTS, so I have taken off my drivers and installed new ones dozens of times. I've even tried older drivers. I looked over at http://forums.techguy.org/windows-nt-2000-xp/662165-solved-no-input-monitor-after.html which is the other thread that talks about the issues I'm having. I've tried all I could from there but it won't help.
Any suggestions?

A:Computer freezes to desktop when it starts and wont shut down.

tuplad89, Welcome to Seven Forums. This is not my area of expertise, but I would suggest, starting in normal mode. Hold down the windows key(the one with the flag on it) and push the "R" key. It will bring up a dialogue box. type msconfig in the box and go to the startup tab. Uncheck everything there except your anti virus program, you will be prompted to reboot. Do so. Reboot even if not pompted. after reboot go back and make sure everything is still unchecked. See if you notice a difference in your issue.

Next press the start button and open an elevated command prompt ( Start-type cmd in the search boz, right click the cmd entry there and select run as administrator) In that window that appears type/copy-paste sfc /scannow If you decide to type it notice the space between the SFC and the /. If it says it found no integrity issues, type exit and let us know. If it says it found problems it couldn't fix, exit and restart the computer. Do the same thing again run scannow again. reboot. Keep doing that for 3 or 4 times until you get found no integrity violations. It is scanning system files looking for corrupted or missing files and trying to replace/repair them. It may take up to 3 times with reboots in between.

Please let us know the results of those things.

hey all, im new to the forum but i have a problem. My computer is an e-machines and is about a year old and for the past maybe 6 months ill turn it on and all the fans start up but the processor fan stops and then it wont boot up. Normally i just keep turning it on and off and it will eventually rev up really high and then slow down and then be fine adn work ok. Now its not doing anything, Just over and over turns on and then turns off while both other fans stay running. Power supply seems to be working properly. Doesnt make any noise and i have power everywhere. Any ideas? Thanks

A:Processor fan starts but stops and computer wont turn on

Sounds like the CPU fan is dead. Replace it. In my area a new CPU fan is $20-30.

last night my computer froze and i had to shut it down holding the power button. since then when i have tried to turn it on, it first looks like its gonna load, but then goes to the screen w/ the 3 safe mode options to start in, and to start in windows normally. the arrow keys will not work for me, so i cant get to safe mode and dont know how. after it waits for 30 seconds, it will start in normal mode, and go the the screen where it looks like its gonna load, the "Windows XP Professional" screen, where there is the time bar thing (not sure what thats called). once it is there, the screen will turn black and then restart and go back to the startup page w/ the safe mode options and normal mode option. rinse and repeat. i dont know what to do and any help will be appreciated. thanks!

A:Computer Starts And Goes To Boot Screen But Wont Start Up

If using keys at boot won't work and XP can't start then you could try using you XP installation disk to boot windows or try a linux OS on a dvd. If you still can't get it to go then try a repair install off the XP disk. http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Ok, it all started when i was dloading a program to make windows setups.(.msi). Then i decided i didnt like it and uninstalled it. After tht was done. I decided i was going to stick with Inno Setup. I have used it before and liked it. But then i noticed all or most of my desktop icons were missing. And all the start menu ientries were missing. So i figured i had a virus. SO i went to do a system resotre. But found that i oculdnt find it...due to to missing folders. So i decided i would then try to boot into safe mode. When i tried to boot it said it cannot find a file(same with normal mode). Ubfortunely i dont remember what it said. I think it said windows cannot find NRDL press ctrl alt delete to reboot. or somthing like that. Any ways i tried a few more times and it all failied. SO then i tried the windows recovery console. Nothing. I really didnt know whre to go with it. Then i decied to go into the bios and reset. Or i thought i was resseting them. I seleteced. "fails proof settings". But then i rebooted and things got worse. My monitor is now getting no signal, it says it is ocnnected though..... So i cant see what i am doing. Please any ideas. I have a Programming project that i have been working on for months now. i dont wanna lose that. And a Lang arts project. I am very computer savvy but i have tried everything. and yes i tried a differ monitor. No Dice.

Without more details about your motherboard, it sounds like your memory is not seated properly, or you damaged it when you took it out.

Ok, my computer gives me hard time that I have no idea what to do. Before that my computer was running fine. One day when I got back, I realize the computer was automatically turn off (usually I have it on for days).

Then I restart my computer, but whenever it comes to the moment where we can press the F8 screen, it will quickly turn to the blue screen for 1 second and then the computer will restart again.

I even try to access to safe mode and hope to have the problem fix but it does the same with restarting the computer again and again.

Now it even worse, when I turn on my computer, even the PC is running but there is nothing show on the monitor. I know there is nothing wrong with the monitor because I test the monitor with another computer and it just works fine.

Any one knows what cause the problem or how to fix this problem? This really drive me crazy as I totally have no idea how to fix this problem. Thanks in advance for any suggestions/solutions.

Hi Joe, first things first... try another montior. This will tell you if the monitor is bad or if the computer has a problem. Post back and tell us what you found out

First of all, I'd just like to say that old technology hates me.

What's usually supposed to happenwhen I start an older computer that I have (2001-ish) is:
1: Fans start spinning
2: Internal speaker give out a beep
3: Monitor switches on
4: HDD starts spinning
Now when I try to turn it on, I only get 1 and 4.

This has actually been going on for a while, but it was only every second time I switched it on, then 80% of the time, but the computer never works.
Is this a problem with the motherboard?
I've tried switching RAM and GPU, as well as resetting the CMOS.

Hello and Welcome to TSF!!!

Did you upgrade any hardware component recently???
I see you have an on-board graphic card.
Clean the case from the dust from inside.
Also, you can try with another monitor.
Double-check all the hardware components, especially RAM.
Keep us posted...

My 9 year old daughter was on the kid's Compaq computer using the "Jumpstart" Web site when she says "the computer started doing something and then the monitor went dark." She thinks there was a message that said something about "internet explorer" right before the monitor went dark. I wonder if what happened was that there was a problem with internet explorer so it "turned off" OR I wonder if the computer was just restarting itself after an automatic download in order for the new stuff to take effect. I think it was highly possible that when the computer started "doing its own thing" that my daughter started clicking keys to try to stop the process not knowing what was going on.

So now here is what I am left with. The green power button on the monitor is not lit and the screen shows nothing. I can turn the computer off by pressing the power button on the tower (I hear one ding). I can turn the computer on by pressing the power button on the tower...I hear the computer power-up, I hear the usual "ta-da-ta-da" and then a few seconds later a "da-da," but the monitor does nothing. After the computer has set for awhile and is quiet, I can move the mouse and hear the computer "wake up," but still see nothing on the monitor.

Do you think my daughter pushed something that is the reason the monitor seems to be "turned off," and if so, what can I try? I understand computers very little so ... Read more

A:Solved: computer starts but no picture on monitor

Hi momathome,

It sounds more like trouble with the physical connections on the monitor, but it is possible something changed on your windows settings. Try disconnecting the monitor cable (the cable that runs from the back of the monitor to the back of the computer) and reconnect it on both ends. You can leave the computer on to see if the display comes back.

If that doesn't work, try booting the computer in Safe Mode to see if this will allow you to get the monitor to come up. Press the power button on your computer to turn it off, then turn it back on. Begin hitting the F8 key on your keyboard repeatedly (don't hold it down) for about 20-30 seconds. Then press enter and give your computer a few minutes to power up.

If your monitor comes back in Safe Mode, things will look really strange. Right-click anywhere on the desktop that does not have an icon, then click on "Properties" in the menu that appears. This should open your display properties. From there, click on the Advanced tab and see what your monitor settings are. If you have more than one monitor that shows up in that window, make sure Monitor 1 is active and set as the "Primary" display. If so, click OK and try restarting the computer.

Hope this helps!

--- Russ
