Dell XPS 8300 desktop PSU upgrade gone wrong, horrible wrong....no audio!!

Q: Dell XPS 8300 desktop PSU upgrade gone wrong, horrible wrong....no audio!!

To all -

My first post in this forum, but I've been around the block a few times building my own machines (and for others), but a month ago i ended up springing for a dell xps 8300 desktop b.c i got a great deal on a scratch and dent system with an i7-2600 processor, 1.5tb drive, and an ATI 5770 1gb graphics card.
So long story short I've added one component and upgraded one existing component. The first was adding an SSD drive to the mix, which worked out wonderfully (i boot from power off to desktop in 13 seconds). Very pleased.
The second seemed to be just as successful...I replaced the stock PSU (460watts) with an Antec 650watt continuous power PSU (certified and all). Reconnected all the cables, crossed my fingers, turned on the power supply...got the green light on the motherboard so turned on the computer and all was fantastic!!!
The catch is..........I didn't notice until hours later i'd not heard a sound from the computer in quite some time. Tested by playing a few songs and nothing.

Here's where i got lost. In the "playback devices" (right clicking on the audio icon in the task manager tray) it shows the music playing (as in the levels are bouncing up and down). First thought - i'm an idiot and plugged my speakers into the wrong hole.....not the case. Second thought - speakers could be toast - not the case. Tested speakers on mp3 player and tested the audio cable by plugging headphones in the front audio ports (the xps 8300 has the rear audio and a mic and headphone jack on the top of the casing). Still showing the sound as registering, tells me when i've unplugged a the speaker cable or plugged it back in...........but i'm not getting any sound.
So did the usual. Reassembled everything to make sure all connections were secure (twice). Reinstalled all audio drivers. Even got out the OLD psu and plugged that in to see if magically the audio would work and it did not.
My thinking is that i bumped/banged something when removing the PSU and installing the new one as the audio worked before but not after. Remember seeing something bent slightly on the MB (a tic-tac size black and white cylindrical object standing straight up) and just moving it back to a 90 degree angle....but something tells me that is my problem.

Anyone know how to test and see if i've damaged the motherboard or if it's possibly some other unrelated problem? I'm thinking of stopping by my local best buy and buying a $25 usb external sound card to test it out tomorrow.....any idea in the meantime? I just can't come to any other conclusion than i nixed something removing the PSU....i mean the audio worked fine before and stopped working after and now i see the audio playing and the playback levels jumping up and down in my volume tray but no actual sound......
I *think* my specs are listed below, but i'm running win7 ultimate x64, i7-2600 processor, 1.5TB HDD + 128 SSD, 650 PSU, 8gb RAM (checked to make sure all modules were seated correctly already), and have a ATI 5770 graphics card.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My speakers have a strange buzz,& sound kinda wavy. But it seems if I turn it up louder then regularly it goes away.I have not turned them up loud for a month or so.Just started happening today. What kinda setting should I set it too?Theirs alot of different settings,I used one in the middle for awhile.I been fiddling with it & forgot just what one it was.The amp in the speakers is probably going bad.
But I got curious that maybe the bit & hz setting may have caused it.Idk,so thought I would ask.

A:I think I blew my jbl desktop speakers, wrong audio settings?

Whatever settings you make in the PC should have no affect on the speakers. It's still just an analog output and the output level can't go high enough to hurt the speakers. The buzzing is an indication of an internal problem in the speaker system.

Situation 1
Hello. I had “music store card” [gift card] that I received as a birthday gift lying around so I figured let me it out. Anyway, I purchased 3 songs from iTunes.com. Attempted to burn them. It didn’t work I got some sort of write error on the CD.

While in main screen I clicked Edit > Preferences > Advance > Burning: Discovered that the settings were set to burn an Audio CD. However, I was using a Data CD. Is this why it didn’t work? Last I read up it should have worked. The disk was a CD-R Memorex Cool Color CD-R. This shouldn’t have proven to be a problem right?

This disk can’t be played in Xbox (original not Xbox 360).

Situation 2
In another situation I tried burning a copy of and an mp3-to-Audio-CD.

When copying the Audio-CD I was using Nero Burn Ultra Edition Got the error message saying along the lines of “write fail, unable to finish end session.” Same thing happened when I was trying to make an mp3-to-Audio-CD, except I was using Microsoft Windows Media Player Version 10.0.

This disk can’t be played in Xbox (original not Xbox 360).

So what am I doing wrong? Here are my objectives:

1) Want to burn audio CDs that will play in cars, stereo systems, DVD players, Xbox, and Xbox360 – when I get it . If I keep purchasing music from iTunes.com, this may prove difficult?

2) What media should I use for what ty... Read more

I have a Dell 8300 with an audio problem. Using the Dell Creative Diagnostic Test results in a "mixer setting driver" failure. When the fix button is actuated the failure is fixed. However, when I test again the failure returns. I can maintain sound only by clicking the "wave/ mp3" volume control in the "playback control" every time the audio disappears. My sound card is a Creative SB Live Series.

A:Dell 8300 Audio Problem

Have you just installed the card or was it working fine until recently?

If it worked before, try installing the card in another PC and see how it behaves. If the problem follows the card, it is likely you need to replace it.
If it works fine, then you can try reinstalling it in your Dell but use a different card slot if possible.

Another possibility is the driver software, have you only used the CD drivers or have you managed to download the latest from Creative's site?

Hey guys,

This is my first time posting here. Anyway, I bought a Dell XPS 8300 and I love it. I've had it for about 2 years almost now. I got it because it just seemed like the right choice at the moment and I heard really good reviews about it. Well, as of right now, the GPU is not meeting my needs. I started playing Battlefield 3 and I get about 15 FPS (with lowest settings). I want something that can allow me to run it at high settings with much better FPS. Below are the cards that I would like to get, but dont know if they will work. If someone who  has the 8300 can confirm these work, I would really appreciate it. Btw, I will not be getting another PSU. It is not in my budget to buy a new card and another PSU.
AMD Radeon 6950
GTX 560
AMD 7770
AMD 7850
AMD 6870
GTX 760
I know that these cards will run it a little dangerously close since they will be on a 460W, but I want to know which ones will work best. I really want the 6950, 760 and 7850. If anybody knows if these will work, I would really appreciate it.

Thank You.

I have a dell 8300. Dell told me I could upgrade my 1gig memory to no more than 4 gig. I bought 4 - 1gig cards and installed them. When I look at the system information, it says 3.25 gig. I thought there was something wrong with one of the memory cards but I tried it without and it goes to 3. gig then I tried along with the 3 1 gig cards I put in an old 512 and it went back up to 3.25. I read that since I"m using winxp home edition it won't read more than 3 gig. Is that true and is there anything I can do to fix it. (I don't want to upgrade to pro). My other question is. is the 4 gig in there wasted (should I remove 1 gig and only have 3 gig) or is the the other .75 gig being used at all.

Thank you in advance

Yes it will not see all the 4 gig......I personally would just leave the 4 gig in

Hi fro,

not burn, but the case fans won't shut off. Dell uses proprietary motherboards and power supplies you would have to change the motherboard too, or get an adapter. I googled it and found a couple of places that make them.

Dell true to form has made the cmos non-upgradeable for use with WIN8. So, with regrets, I need to know what motherboard, cpu and sound cards, memory, etc, I will need in order to upgrade this elephant.

Then of course, I need to know if my graphics card, NVIDIA GeForce 6200, power supply 250W, etc are sufficient. The power supply is welded to the frame of the box, so will be a pill to change out. I also need suggestions on which Sound card, since there isn't one now. It too is part of the motherboard.

I guess I should also ask if this upgrade is even possible. Is WIN 8 backward compatible with xp software? I hope so, since it would be cheaper than purchasing a new machine and software.

Any and all advice will be appreciated.

Hi. I'm looking to upgrade the video card for my aging Dell Dimension 8300 for $150 or less (preferably $50-100). I have a new computer on the way which I'll use for the heavy lifting, but I'd like to be able to use this one as well - for 3D animation/video editing and light duty gaming for my kids.

I have a Dell Dimension 8300,
Intel Pentium 4, 2.6 GHz
Socket 478 mPGA
Chipset i875P
Graphic interface supports AGP version 3.0; 8x

I can't open my computer right now to get at the power supply, but the system came with a 305 Watt supply with 1.5 V (as opposed to .8) for the video card.

I currently have an nVidia GeForce5200 FX with 128 MB RAM, and would like to upgrade if it's economical enough and would boost the performance of this machine as it gimps along.

Can the Dell 8300 handle a 512 MB card?
(I've heard it both ways; Dell sales support said yes but I wasn't sure how tech savvy the person was).

I've seen recommendations for the nVidia GeForce 7600, 8600GT and 7950GT.

I don't know much about video cards, so any advice would be appreciated.

A:Video card upgrade for Dell Dimension 8300

An added note - a Dell Tech representative just told me that he doesn't think the Dell 8300 motherboard will let you benefit from anything above a 128MB video card, because the motherboard only allocates 128 MB for Shared Memory.

Not sure if that's true. I've certainly seen plenty of 256MB cards recommended as upgrades for the Dimension 8300 (and the first sales person there was suggesting a 512MB card)

You don't need a new card to run the screen. You do for modern games, but not the screen. In fact, your old card should be working just fine for everything but gaming.

I'd consider something like an nvidia 7600GT. What is your budget?

Hi all -- I have a Dell Dimension 8300:

Intel Pentium 4
CPU 2.6 GHz
2.00 GB of RAM
80GB Harddrive

Currently I have an nVidia GeForce FX 5200 graphics card but I want to upgrade. I do a fair amount of gaming, not a great deal but I do enjoy a higher performance, I also recently got BioShock which I was looking forward too but requires a higher performance card.

Does anyone have any idea on what cards would be compatible with my system and any recommendations on what would be the best fit. I do tend to prefer nVidia cards but am in no way constrained by that. I'm happy to spend a little more for that added performance, I would rather get something better now and not have to upgrade again for a while.

Thanks in advance!

Your psu (power supply unit) will undoubtedly be the limiting factor. Dell psu's are NOT among the best by far. They also use their own wiring so you cant just buy any old psu and throw it in.

Hey. I've had experience upgrading the stock graphics card to a Nvidia 650TI, but i've decided to upgrade again. This time, i've upgraded from the Nvidia to a Radeon RX560. The issue is, the card will not send signal to the display while it is plugged into the computer. I have checked to make sure that all the pins are connected, but there is still the issue. I've also noticed that the computer has issues finding my keyboard/mouse while the new card is in.
I tested to make sure that the card was not DOA, but it seems to be working fine on my brother's system. This leads me to believe that it may be an issue with either the BIOS or the PSU. I'm afraid to install the new drivers without having the card plugged in as i might lock myself out of visuals while using my older card, which is currently my only method of viewing the system.
Does anyone have experience upgrading this system to the RX560? Any ideas what the problem here might be?

It's looking more like my old XPS600 is shot, so I'm probably about to order a new desktop. I have done a "practice" run and have constructed what you see below.

(I mostly just surf the web but I do play some games such as Microsoft flight Sim)

So, does anything look out of whack? Is there anything I would benefit massively from if I just upgraded that component a bit, or is anything overkill or mismatched with other components?

XPS 8300 desktop
intel core i5-2320 processor (6 mb cache, 3.0 ghz)
windows 7 home
8 gb ddr3 sdram at 1333 mhz
1tb 7200 rpm 16mb cache hard drive
Nvidia Geforce GT530 graphics
THX Trustudio PC sound card
24" ultrasharp monitor

The more expensive options for a graphics card are:

AMD Radeon™ HD 6670 1GB DDR5 [Add $20.00 or $1.00/month1]

Single 1GB GDDR5 NVIDIA® GeForce® GTS 450 [Add $40.00 or $1.00/month1]

AMD Radeon™ HD 6770 [Add $80.00 or $3.00/month1]

Nvidia® GeForce® GTX560Ti with 1.25GB Memory [Add $230.00 or $7.00/month1]

Single AMD Radeon™ HD 6870 [Add $280.00 or $9.00/month1]

Would any of these be 'dramatically' worth the extra cash?

Personally, I would build it myself. You could build an identical machine for the same or less, use all quality components, and be able to hand pick everything that you want/need.

Hi, I had a GPU fail in my Dell Vostro 1500 laptop. The card that failed was an NVIDIA GeForce 8400 GS. The Vostro laptop actually can accept an NVIDIA 8600 GT card too. So I ordered the replacement part from Dell for the 8600 and they shipped me a refurbished unit.
The surgery to put in the new card took all night for hack like to do. I did not look carefully at the refurbished unit they shipped me as I was nervous handling the card (that I might break it).
But when I turned on the laptop after the installation, I did not get a pause at the BIOS saying “I see new hardware” like I did when I upgraded the RAM.
After the computer booted up I uninstalled the 8400 driver and then installed the 8600 driver. There was a snag at it’s possible that Windows automatically reinstalled the 8400 driver during one the required reboots but I KNOW that I wrote the 8600 driver over top at least (I had hoped to do a clean uninstall then reinstall but Windows tried to grab a driver for me).
So now when I right click on computers, properties device manager it shows the video as still the 8400 card. The 8400 card I removed has a sticker on it that says KU907 on it. The invoice for the 8600 that Dell sent for the 8600 says KU907 on it too.
I think I was sent the wrong part from Dell (I paid a higher price for the 8600 GPU) . Is it possible that a legacy driver is making the Vostro think it has the 8400 when the part IS an 8600. Or when I go to the Device Manager, does the computer physically c... Read more

Hey guys I play a lot of games on and off when I get the chance and it seems that lowering the in-game video settings isn't going to cut it anymore.

when i run dxdiag it says: NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 - 128MB

I have gathered that some manufacturers pre-overclock it for you out of the factory... is that the difference between the different brands? How important is this? I think for me, it's best to get the cheapest one... yes?

The BFG 7600 GT is 142.99 USD while the eVGA is only 109.99 without s&h from newegg. That's a big difference to me.

Hmm... I just found this but newegg is selling the eVGA 7600 GS for 89.99 with a $20 rebate so it's 70 bucks plus 5 dollars for s&h. What is the difference between the 7600 GT and GS? They're both listed as good value cards:
- http://internetgames.about.com/cs/toppicks/tp/tpvideocards.htm

thanks again!

edit: actually the $20 rebate is good for any evga 7600 GS and GT, 7800 GS, 8800 GTX and GTS bought on newegg... but only for very specific models that I couldn't find. It is sooo confusing how many different makes of one 7600 GT / GS model there are ... Read more

I am running Windows 10 64 bit.
I bought an Asus GTX 950-2G (no power cables) Video Card looking for a quick upgrade.
Installation was super easy but I get a black screen. When I hooked up the VGA cable to the onboard video card and tried running the GEFORCE experience could not recognize the video card. Also tried using the DVD with provided drivers to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas ? Really appreciate the help.

Just posting my advice to upgrading my computer to run a 4K monitor which I was unable to find through searching and helps others in doing the same to their 5 year old system thinking of doing the same.
My system specs
XPS 8300 Intel core I-7-2600 CPU @ 3.40GHz, 6Gb ram 64bit operating system running windows 7 home edition.
I only had to change the graphics card and monitor.
Fitted ASUS NVIDIA GeForce GTX 950 STRIX 2GB(Supports 4K output) at a cost of £100 UK pounds.
Fitted Samsung U28E590D 28-Inch 4K LED Monitor (3840 x 2160, UHD, 1 ms) at cost of £340.
Both items fitted and worked without the need to load their install disks as the computer worked it all out for me on reboot.
Hopefully anyone else wanted to upgrade their 8300 to run 4k monitor this will aid them. please note no other part was changed and still running the same PSU power supply and there are other similar 4K monitors to choice from and obviously different graphics cards but I was working on a budget without buying a new system that could run a 4K monitor.
PC is also much quitter when running than before.
Thanks for reading and hopefully helping others.

Hi everybody,
since friday we have a strange problem with some clients and ARP answers. We notice that our switch recognize wrong MAC addresses on some ports.
We use wireshark to see what happens and we get the following:
5 clients: (XX:XX:XX:F7:52:75) (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8) (XX:XX:XX:c2:b0:b9) (XX:XX:XX:88:c7:4f) (XX:XX:XX:7b:67:4d)
Wireshark runs on client 1 (, promiscuous mod off)
Client 5 ( send a broadcast arp question (who has - tell and client 1 ( is sending ARP replies with src = XX:XX:XX: 38:d1:a8. (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8) is offline (network cable removed) and has no entry of (XX:XX:XX:38:d1:a8) in his arp cache.
The clients run Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 8.1
Why we get these phenomenon and how can we solve it? Is there maybe a problem with some updates of the last patchday?

Thanks for the reply and kind regards

I'm having some problems with the sound on my computer. There seem to be some discrepancies with the sound - some things work and some don't, and I am confused as to why. I need some help! Please bear with me. I need to explain everything that is/isn't working so that someone may be able to tell me why and how to fix it.

I posted a message earlier today (in the Multimedia section) about problems with Windows Media Player 9 series. It wouldn't open .mp3 files or play CDs, and kept freezing on my system. I am able to play CD's with the CD player under Accessories just fine.

So I installed realplayer to see if anything would change. It will play CDs; however, when I tried to play an .mp3 file it said "cannot open the audio device. Another application may be using it". I clicked for more information and it said to make sure that your sound card/driver are working properly. Everything I check seems to indicate that all is working fine. I only recently installed the sound driver (ADI SoundMAX audio driver for Win98SE) as I only recently acquired this computer. When I check under Device Manager-->Sound, video & game controllers-->SoundMAX Integrated Digital Audio Device is working properly. In the Control Panel, under Multimedia Properties, Devices, the Driver is enabled and active. I checked for updated drivers and it says that the most up-to-date driver is currently installed. So, all indications seem to be that the sound card &am... Read more

Hi all, I'm new to this forum (I have introduced myself in the introductions forum). Starting recently, something seems to have happened to the on board audio on my Asus P5KR motherboard. You see, the left channel is fine, but the right channel is about 50% volume compared to the left. Also, when I turn the volume up relatively loud, I can quite clearly hear severe fuzz/distortion in the right channel.
I have done a number of things: I tried with headphones and speakers, I swapped around the cable going into the amp (when I did, the problem swapped), used different cable, went through every darn setting, installed the specific motherboard audio driver rather than the default OS driver, and I even uninstalled the audio device in the device manager and reinstalled it. After all of this, I still have an extremely annoying problem. I would appreciate any help, thanks in advance.

A:Something is wrong with mobo audio

You will likely have to disable your audio, and install a PCI or PCI-E audio card. You have all the symptoms of damage caused by over-driving the audio. They are very fragile, and often cannot take high volume loads. Doubt that you problem will otherwise be fixable.

The other night I was having problems with my sound, so I ran the troubleshooting feature and now I can't use headphones with my laptop. When I troubleshoot now, it doesn't show work the way it used to. When I open the volume mixer and click on device, it only shows speakers instead of showing headphones and the communication's headphone is completely missing. The product number is: QC400AV Also, how do I check the chipset?

Hi: There is no W10 audio driver for your model. http://support.hp.com/us-en/product/HP-Pavilion-g6-1c00-Notebook-PC-series/5145708/model/5165738 The only suggestion I can offer would be to try this W10 audio driver from a different model notebook with the IDT audio. Install and restart the PC. This package contains the driver that enables the IDTHigh-Definition (HD) Audio in supported notebook models that arerunning a supported operating system. File name: sp63555.exe

ok. I have a W2260 emachines pc all factory except a 2nd hard drive (been in there for months). Now I ordered graphics card, sound card, ram, and psu to put in it.

The psu came from different factory from newegg for some reason so I installed it before anything else arrived (which should come today). I decided to make sure it was working and turned it on. Everything seemed fine. It started up like normal but while loading desktop it froze. ctrl+alt+del did nothing, although I did't plug keyboard in until it froze which may have been why. So I had to hold power button to shut it off.

Then I turned it on... Screen is black. Power light isn't on. I can hear the hard drives and such but they aren't really working or loading. CD and DVD players open. So I open the pc.

GOOD! Some of the power supply wires were against the CPU fan which wasn't turning. I moved them and it started spinning again but pc just doesn't run.

I thought it might be faulty psu but I put original back in and pc does same thing. So I assume my CPU overheated, even in 2 or 3 minutes? If so that sucks because there is no cpu upgrade for socket A made today. Just the same one for around $50 shipped so if I have to buy another it won't even be any better.

Does this sound like cpu? Could the motherboard be damaged? I don't want to buy another processor to find that it still doesn't work.

A:PSU upgrade gone wrong

It is very possible that the cpu did overheat. A hot cpu will act up (freeze etc.). You found the fan not cooling. It's a straightforward situation. If you check ram and everything and it checks O.K. then you may have to upgrade your motherboard/cpu bundle. I would replace them both because of heat stress. Good Luck.

hey guys i recently just bought a 2GB stick of ram because the price was right. Im at 8 GB now and its not the same brand and etc as the other 3 that came with the PC i hear that this can cause issues and make it slower then before... soo i took a pic using CPU-z to compare the frequency's . The one on the left is with the new Chip, the one on the right is without.. as you can see there are 2 Numbers that are different, is this a cause for concern? or should everything work smoothly?

I decided to buy some new ram :

to upgrade my PC from two 512 PC3200 sticks to two of the above 1gb sticks. My bios is set to auto detect the memory and upon replacing the old memory with the new and booting the system once windows started to load the power supply died rather impressively, sparks and all.

I quickly went and purchased another power supply (relatively cheap at £25). I installed the new power supply and after changing my bios to use ddr 400 ram it seemed to work fine as leaving the bios to auto detect the ram didnt work. I left my pc on for several hours using it normally and shut it down. The power supply, like its dead predecessor, has a switch on the back to turn it off and on. when it is on and the computer is off, the mouse infrared is still on. returning to by pc i noticed that the mouse light was out but the switch was on, indicating there was no power. I tried booting my pc but it appears that the ram has claimed a second power supply as nothing happens:

My specs are:

ASRock K8S8X motherboard
amd 3200 64bit clawhammer
agp 256mb nvidia 7600gt
soundblaster audigy se sound card
120gb hdd
nec dvd rw
Please help. what would cause this to happen? would it be faulty ram? is it a ram voltage problem (the ram says it has voltage of 2.6) should it be 3.3v? could this be that the bios isnt picking up the ram details causing it to overload the cp... Read more

I am upgrading several computers from 8.1 to 8.1 Pro.

All but 1 follow this procedure:
Run "Setup.exe" from ISO disk
files install and update, restarts twice
reboots to 8.1
click "Add features to Windows 8.1"
put in upgrade key
it runs for a couple of minutes then presents error "Something went wrong"
I reboot, at this time 8.1 begins upgrade process and ends up with 8.1 Pro.

On the one causing a problem:
run "setup.exe" from ISO
setup immediately asks for upgrade key, tries to update and gets something went wrong

If I try to "Add features" it asks for upgrade key, gets same error, but without loading files from setup, it won't upgrade windows.

Does anyone have a suggestion as to how to get this PC to upgrade? I have tried to refresh windows and have made a restore point, but I can't wipe the machine and start over. None of the others had to be refreshed.

I recently purchased a Mach Speed P4X400DBP motherboard to upgrade my computer. I made all the hardware changes and get an error with the new mb during windows (2k) bootup that says the hard drive controller is not functioning properly. I've tried booting up in safemode, which did not help. the error is:

***STOP:0x0000007B (0xEB41F84C,0xC0000034,0x00000000,0x00000000)

microsoft (KB) suggested I install drivers for the new hardware controller... but they don't install unless it detects the mb, and I can't install until I have a successful boot.

I don't have any problems booting under the same configuration with my original. I've done a virus scan, hard drive scan/defrag (w/ the original mb), windows emergency repair (booting from windows cd).

motherboard. The manual didn't say anything about installing drivers before
installing hardware.

UPDATE: I talked to their support rep and he says that I'm looking at a new windows install... I'd rather not buy a new harddrive or go through the rigors of backing up my old one. I have a hard time believing that these kinds of measures are necessary to intall a new mb.

Can anyone please advise me on what to do next?

What's the normal procedure for mb replacement w/o reformatting?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys have!

Boot up the PC and nothing getting to the screen (no signal), no 'beeps', fans start up, i think i hear the HD spin (its a quiet one) but nothing else.

Have tried changing the graphics card (with one i know works), cable/ monitor ok, tried clearing the cmos, i have no idea whats going on;

It started with a simple upgrade from a 3800 Athlon 939 to a X2 3800 and 1gig of DDR, i figured the board was fried, as it wouldn't display anything even when i swapped the CPU back and removed the extra DDR memory, so decided to upgrade to AM2...

Bought a MSI K9N Neo 550 series with a X2 5400 Athlon, a 650 psu and 2gig of ddr2... plugged it all together, checked it, booted it, same damn problem as before! In fact the first time it booted it shut itself back down (don't know why). Now every time it boots i get nothing on screen, no errors, no beeps, nothing.

I have XP pro OEM version which probably won't agree with the new board -but should boot anyway, shouldn't it? <plus i should still get system stats if this is a OS prob.. i don't

Please, any help, suggestions, comments, I've been without a PC for a week now and have no clue where to go from here.

So yesterday i was attempting to upgrade my windows 7 home edition to professional for my laptop, and the update did work (sort of), except i appear to have lost the drivers for my wireless connection, and thus cannot connect to the internet. Is there any way to undo the upgrade, or get the drivers i need to get it up and running again? i have tried looking myself but have been unsuccessful.
I am using 64-bit with an Intel Core i7-2630QM CPU @ 2.00GHz if it helps. The laptop is a dell, but can't remember the exact name of it, i think it's an XPS.

A:Upgrade gone wrong

How did you attempt the upgrade? - it sounds as if you did a Custom install, rather than an Anytime Upgrade (which is a lot quicker, and safer, and leaves all your data and programs - and drivers - intact)

Download the drivers from the manufacturer's website, and transfer them on USB sitck or CD, and install them.

Hello Chocolatebear, and welcome to Vista Forums.

It seems that it may not have converted back over from game mode properly. You may be able to logoff and logon, or restart the computer, to sort this out.

Hope this helps,

I recently did a fresh install of my operating system. I used DBAN to wipe my drive and re-installed windows 7 home premium.

Almost all the programs I run seem to put my computer under a lot of load and make my fans loud.

I do have programs like utorrent installed, but they are rarely used and not kept on 24/7. I also turn my computer off every night.

Another thing is the game minecraft makes my fans very load and freezes during gameplay (which i'm not sure if it is because of the use of mods or my computer)
