HijackThis Log - When trying to access Windows Update..."Page cannot be displayed"

Q: HijackThis Log - When trying to access Windows Update..."Page cannot be displayed"

I've been having malware issues lately, and have performed numerous scans with different programs:

MalwareBytes (removed several threats)
Avira Antivir (found nothing)
Ad-aware (bad cookies)
Safety.live.com - found items but couldn't fix it

The popups (more like new tabs, as I had the popup blocker enabled) have stopped, and it seems to be running better, but the weird thing is I can't access Windows Updates. It just says "This page cannot be displayed".

Also, the yellow shield in the system tray shows up when you first boot up, but then it goes away, as if a program/registry entry has not loaded yet when that icon first loads, but then kicks it out when it does load up.

We did some searches, and found that we should just run HiJackThis and post the log for you smart guys to analyze.

So, here it is.

Preferred Solution: HijackThis Log - When trying to access Windows Update..."Page cannot be displayed"

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

When our website users click on an html attachment embedded on a web-page in IE9, the download manager will not display the "Open" option. It will only display "Save" and "Cancel" which our users don't like, having to save the
html document in a folder to open it. Whereas, when downloading attachments like pdf, word etc. all three options are displayed.

Is there any setting to tweak , which will display all the 3 options for HTML attachments as well?

A:IE9 download manager will not display "Open" option (only "Save" and "Cancel" is displayed) for downloading HTML documents.

As you know, the Open-Save-Cancel dialog box helps you prevent your computer from affecting by virus while downloading.
So I suggest you test to reset all zones to a lower level temporarily and then please attempt to download this html attachment again.

However, since you can normally download the other documents, I suspect there is some restriction in the website which you are trying to view. I recommend you to contact the administrator of that website if possible.
could you please send me the link of the website from where you are trying to download the html attachment?

everytime i go to a new page in IE I am getting a "the page cannot be displayed" message before the page loads. Sometimes it's only for a few seconds, but sometimes much longer, or the page does not load at all and I have to re-open the page. The address at the top of the page is: "www.ads234.com/adview.aspx? . . ." Sometimes the problem goes away for a few minutes after running spybot. any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

Just wondering.....
Very frequently when I'm moving around online I will get the classic page reading "The page cannot be displayed" bla bla bla.....
Sometimes when searching for a site I know exists.
Sometimes after I have inputed some info on an online form & submit it.
Moving from one page to the next in both large & small web sites.
Not a big deal most of the time but it bugs me!
Does anybody out there have any ideas how to prevent this without lowering my protection level too far?
I'm currently using the following (w/ XP&SP2 using IE) & probably more....
LavaSoft Ad-Aware
Spybot Search & Destroy
etc. etc.

On a side note this forum is amazing.
I have only posted a few times but reading what is going on is really helpfull.
THANKS in advance !

That happens to me from time to time too. It's usually due to packet loss. Frozen pages too (where it begins to load and goes stagnant). Go back and try it again and it often works.

I apologize if anyone has already asked these questions, I'm having such issues with the internet right now I can't check to see if they have been asked. Plus everytime I come here I can't seem to find out how to just log in and post my question.
I'm running Windows XP with the newest version of IE. I have a dial-up connection, and while I am aware of just how slow this is, something has to be wrong otherwise. It hangs everywhere I go - no matter what site I visit I wait and wait and wait for it to connect. The little flag in the corner barely flaps. Most of the time I get "The Page Cannot be Displayed" - so I then refresh only to get half the page with some of the buttons not filled in, or it just boots me off the internet altogether. I've called my ISP who says they've done everything on their end they can and that the problem must be my computer. My call manager (the program that shows me who's calling) won't work, once it's connected it gives me a pop error about a socket connection error and this pop up comes up continuously - once I click ok, it comes back up over and over and over.. so much that I have to disable it.
I'm at the end of my rope for how to fix these issues. It's slower than slow. As a matter of fact I've spent the last 90 minutes trying to get to the Tech Support site and had to type this in notepad first because I was getting frustrated waiting and waiting for the site to come up. I've been having a problem for several months with my browser(s) and hoping someone here might be able to help.

I use both Internet Explorer and Firefox, so I've decided this isn't a browser problem. About half the time I click on links-- either from inside the browser, whether I am opening in a new window or not, from an e-mail program or chat program-- I get the "Page cannot be displayed" error. However, when I click Refresh, the page will suddenly load just fine. Usually I have to click Refresh more than once, sometimes five or six times before the page actually loads. I have no idea why it's happening and I can't seem to narrow the possibilities.

Does anyone know why this would be happening?

I'm using Windows XP, if that's of any relevance.

Hi, everyone. Just found this website, and it looks like it will hopefully be helpful. Here's my problem:

I am unable to access a specific website: www.edline.net. I receive an error message stating that this page cannot be displaye (as if the site doesn't exist). However, on other computers, the page appears fine.

I have Norton Internet Security installed w/parental controls (haven't gotten a chance to try turning them off; don't know if this could be the problem). I'm thinking that maybe the oversensative parental controls are blocking the site, but can anyone think of what else could be causing this problem?

I only get the message when I go to www.edline.com. Other websites work fine.

Thanks for your help, everyone!

Hey There,

Was just hoping someone knows wtf is going on here-

Some .chm files, when I try to read them with the default winXP .chm viewer, display the standard Internet Explorer "The page cannot be displayed" error page in the viewing pane. The table of contents is visible, however, just not the page data.

Now, if I copy the same .chm file to my desktop, it opens fine!

This only happens with some of my .chm files, although it is always the same ones- and they always work when I copy them to the desktop, just not when they are in the folders I keep them in.

The data is there, it just can't be accessed for some reason (if I use a .chm 'decoder' to decode the .chm files to .htm format, they work fine; however I don't want to have to mess with a hundred different .htm files just to read a book)

BTW, I have tried changing the filenames with no avail.

If anyone has solved this problem or has any suggestions I would be greatly appreciative.

Someone please help!!

Specs: Laptop Manu. Toshiba, Satellite series
XP Home Edition, SP 2, IE6.

I've tried the following:

Make sure I have an internet connection by pinging the DNS server
followed most of the tips found here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=303807
Install another browser Mozilla Firefox...this also displays page not available message.
I've also updated my Internet Options to Default, I am not going thru a Proxy server, SSL 2.0 and SSL 3.0 are selected
completed a system restore to an earler moment in time...did not work

I've even did a system scan to detect if some of the files were corrupt everything seems fine. The only optin I haven't tried is reinstalling XP. If anyone could provdie any advice before i take this step I would greatly appreciate it!

Hi Guys,

I let my mate borrow my server yesterday, and I got the internet up and running for him fine, He's installed a few programs since then. They include:

Adobe Photoshop
MSN Live Messenger

and he left the computer on over night and restarted it this morning, and the default gateway has disspaeared and all he seems to get when going onto internet explorer is a "Page can not be displayed" error message.

I tried having a look at it, going in to Start > run > cmd > ipconfig

and it showed his IP and subnet mask, but the default gateway did not appear.

I couldn't figure out how to get it back.
Can you guys help at all ??

Thanks in advance

Very Slow dial-up but have tried cellular broadband which works only marginally better. The broadband in fact would be roughly the speed of what dial-up used to be on Windows 95 many years ago, I used to watch short videos then but cannot even do audio clips now unless I download them first. Some web pages and parts of many others will not load at all regardless of reloading many times. Tried Firefox, Opera and several different modems.

Computer -Win 7 64bit 4 core Compaq 4gig ram 3Ghz processor. All updates. Reinstalling Windows on a NEW HD made no difference and as a test I went on line with nothing on the HD not even the (AVG) antivirus, made zero describable difference. I ran a few checks on the computer hardware and everything was OK, have also had the telephone co. check the lines and I even Changed ISP's. Any driver update attempts has always indicated the best driver is already installed.

Two things I would really really really like to know for sure -
(A) Why will a page often fail to load regardless of how much time you give it and then display INSTANTLY after you give up and disconnect?
(B) I read of some setting a while back which was supposed to make a page attempt reload 10 times and tried it but it didn't help one byte. .... So..... is there some utility available that will DISABLE the the error message "This page can't be displayed" (and perhaps a few other assorted excuses) and reload the page AUTOMATICALLY as many times..... and f... I have a HP laptop with D-links router. The wifi signal was working for a few months and all of a sudden it stopped working. I have tried to reinstall the router and checked everything i could think of but it still isn't working???? I have windows xp and i checked to make sure all my wireless setup was right but still not able to get internet unless i plug straight into the modem. Please offer any advice you can think of. My ex-boyfriend was good with computers, but he isn;'t around and i don't know what to do. Thanks!

A:I am connected to a wifi signal, but I get "page can not be displayed"

Have you tried reseting your router? If not,

1. Disconnect the router from the modem (not always necessary, but sometimes it is).

2. Find the reset button on your router (you will probably need a paper clip).

3. Hold it for 15-30 seconds, then release and let it set for a minute or less (probably when the power light stops blinking).

4. Do the same for you modem.

5. Once all of "internet," "dsl," light, or both, are on and not flickering, connect the router back to the modem.

Give it a minute or two. Once your hardware components make friends again you may or may not have to run through a basic setup for you router (it depends on the model, don't worry, most new routers are very easy to setup). If it doesn't good for you. Either way, your net should be working. Hopefully, if not, keep posting!

That should fix your wired part anyway, as for wireless you may or may not have to reconfigure something. If it still isn't working, post what model/version your router is.

Okay, I'll try to explain this as best I can as I'm posting this for my husband. He is on a business trip in SE Asia (India, Korea, Taiwan) and while in India he picked up a virus. It's been cleared but he continues to have this problem with IE7...
He's able to open it and do a little reading or get his email, but after about 5 minutes he only gets the "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error and is unable to open any new tabs or windows, no links work, etc. (he then has to reboot to get it back). He's cleared files (history, cookies, temp files, etc.) using Internet Options and Explore, disabled add-ons, enabled & disabled pop-ups, etc., all to no avail. He's even tried using it in safe mode but the same problems occur. He was able to download HJT which got rid of hggff.dll (Vundo?). He said he would try to email the hjt.log file tomorrow morning (tonight EST) and I will post it, if this will help to decipher the problem. Meanwhile, if anyone has a suggestion of what else to try I (and he) would greatly appreciate it!
He is using a Dell D610 laptop running XP-Pro on a VPN (required to get his emails from work).

My brother's computer is running Windows 98SE and is connected to my XP machine via a Linksys router. I have no problems whatsoever accessing any internet sites or anything, but his machine is pretty messed up.

He can load his home page and connect to almost any site from his favorites list, but trying to access a webpage through the address bar (no matter if http:// or www is typed beforehand) or through the Google Toolbar, the result is always a "Page Cannot Be Displayed" error. As soon as you click enter. I mean it doesn't even act like it is looking for the site, it just gives that error message right away.

I've tried emptying out the cookies and temporary internet files, but that didn't help. I reset the router settings and refreshed them but that didn't help either. I ran an Ad-Aware 6 scan and it found some browser hijack attempts along with some tracking cookies, but removing them didn't help the situation either.

I can't go on his machine to even download something like the newer version of Ad-Aware or HiJack This. I know that HiJack This can be downloaded from my machine and saved on a floppy and transferred to his computer, but I wouldn't be able to upload a log file of his machine to here (because I can't access these forums from his computer). I suppose I could save the log file to the floppy, and upload it from my computer, but I'm afraid his computer may be infected with something and I don't ... Read more

This is frustrating me. Starting yesterday after dinner, the Internet has seemed slower and it sometimes takes several attempts to load a site (ex. home page, here, other sites). I have to hit Refresh a few times because I get a Page Can Not Be Displayed error message. Other times the sites load fine, but this morning for example, it took 4 tries for my home page (NASCAR.com) to load.

I've tried resetting the modem (power it down, reboot it), resetting the router, cleared the cookies and temporary internet files, and I've done virus and spyware scans and nothing turned up except a couple relatively minor cookies.

Hey everyone,

I have had this problem for about a week now, and I have tried everything I know of to figure out what it is, with no luck. Hopefully someone has seen a problem like this before and can help.

I am running XP, SP2. I will browse the net, and after about an hour after start-up, I will get the "Page cannot be displayed" error on all pages I visit. I had Norton installed, took it off. I had IE7 installed, reverted to IE6, no help. I reset my Winsock through the CMD box, nothing. I ran the Network diagnostic, and it said I have a Winsock catalog error, but resetting it does nothing. ALl this time, I am still connected to the internet, because downloads, uploads and whatnot continue.

I tried running the WInsock fix program, nothing. Once I restart, I am fine for an hour or so, then it happens again. I can't make an HTTP, HTTPS, or FTP connection. No firewall installed, other than WIndows Firewall. I have a DSL connection. I have cycled the Modem. I am at a loss. ANyone?

Ok.I spot the problem..

Please download FixWareout from one of these sites:

Save it to your desktop and run it. Click Next, then Install, make sure "Run fixit" is checked and click Finish.
The fix will begin; follow the prompts.
You will be asked to reboot your computer; please do so.

Should you have problems connecting to the internet after the fix, follow these instrutions.

Please go to Start -> Control Panel Network Connections. Rightclick on your default connection (usually Local Area Connection or Dial-up Connection if you are using Dial-up) and leftclick on Properties. The ASUS K54C laptop supports up to 8 GB of RAM, so I'm surprised you're running Windows 7 64-bit in it with only 2 GB of RAM.

You really need to add another 2 GB or max it out with 8 GB.

We don't know how you use that laptop and what you have installed in it, so there could be any number of reasons for the issue with Internet Explorer 11.

Hello, this is my first post here and I'm having a terrible, frustrating problem.

It all started about 6 months ago with issues trying to get to my mother's hotmail account. Every time she logged in, she would get the "Page cannot be displayed" message. I deleted all the cookies and cleared the temporary internet files and still no change. I ran all sorts of virus scanners (McAlfee, Norton Antivirus, Ad-Aware, Trojan Hunter, Spyware Blaster, CC-Cleaner) and still no results.

So, we just stopped using Hotmail and switched to Yahoo! Mail. Everything was alright until about a week ago when Yahoo! got the same message: "This Page Cannot Be Displayed". Oooh-kay. Now the whole family is screwed.

It's spread to much more than just E-Mail. I can't search shopping websites (Ex: Target.com, EBay), I can't apply for jobs online (Borders.com, Monster.com), and anything involving a log-in sequence is pretty much a "Page that cannot be displayed".

I'm at my wits end and I could really appreciate any help. Thank you for reading.

What's going on? The last two days has seen every second or third page view being the "this page cannot be displayed" page. Sometimes hitting BACK gets me to the page I wanted rather than the page I previously looked at. Then when I try again it all goes OK.......for another few pages and then it happens again.

I run AVG antivirus every night. I've logged out, logged back in. Run Adaware, Spybot. Deleted temp files and cookies. Turned the 'puter completely off. Disconnected, reconnected. BUT IT IS STILL HAPPENING!

I will even copy/paste this post as the first time I try to submit it, I just know it is going to say "this page cannot be displayed".

Any ideas what might be happening?

Hey guys,

I am working on a 2005 Compaq Persario, runs fine except every time you attempt to go somewhere on the internet, it says "This page cannot be displayed" in both IE6 and FF2. If you enter in the IP of the website, it will come up just fine. But if you type in "www.google.com" for example, it won't. I Can't find any traces of malware that would be stopping it, either.

Another thing I don't get, is even though DCHP is turned on for the modem, it says it isn't on in ipconfig /all... I tried repairing the winsock (Netsh winsock reset) and then re-establishing the IP (netsh int ip winsock reset) to no avail. I am pretty sure my winsock is messed up because every time I try and release the ip for anything it gives the "The operation failed because there are no permissible devices" error that we all love so much.

One other annoyance is that when you try and view the firewall, it says that the service isn't started and when you try and start it, it says it cannot be started (I even went into services.msc and tried).

Here is what I have attempted:
Repairing winsock through CMD
Deleting winsock registry keys
Put holy water on the computer (Okay, maybe not )
Turning on DHCP and then off again
Different Dial-up numbers
Resetting IE options
Malware scans
Reinstalling modem

Along with a ton of other things I cannot even remember

Any insight would be helpful!

I'm using IE6 with WindowsXP. I frequently have a problem using the 'back' button. Instead of going back, I get the 'page cannot be displayed' message and sometimes even 'refresh' doesn't work. For example, amazon.com's site tells me I have a bug in my browser. What's puzzling is that it also tells me I'm using Mozilla - which I'm not. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I am including the results from my scan at Hijackthis. Thank you.

A:"back" button - page cannot be displayed

I'm using IE6 with WindowsXP. I frequently have a problem using the 'back' button. Instead of going back, I get the 'page cannot be displayed' message and sometimes even 'refresh' doesn't work. For example, amazon.com's site tells me I have a bug in my browser. What's puzzling is that it also tells me I'm using Mozilla - which I'm not. Does anyone know how I can fix this? I will include the results from my scan at Hijackthis asap. Thank you.

I recently got my computer reformatted because it was having issues with the sound card. But now, when browsing the web (IE7) I get a "This Page Cannot Be Displayed" message where the advertisements should be.

I searched the forums and found one post similar but his problem wasn't solved.

So someone please help.
This didn't happen before the reformat.

See anything that would be causing me grief? Most times I click on a link or open a web page I get the message and if I refresh or go back and click again I usually get what I want, though sometimes it will do it a second or third time, too.

I go to a court site, click on a link and a new window pops up. It is supposed to display a PDF but IE gives this messsage:
?This page can?t be displayed.? It mentions TLS and SSL should be enabled.

I have them ALL enabled.
I set them to default values.
?Fix connection problems? results in ?Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem.?

Chrome and Safari work just fine displaying the PDF correctly.

I set everything back to default values. No joy.
I?ve ?repaired? IE 10. No joy
I re-installed IE 10. No joy.

What?s a good next step to diagnose this?

A:IE 10 says "This page canít be displayed" Chrome, Safari can.

Government site are usually the most out of date site on the net,
Press the F12 key and verify Browser mode and Document mode.
On such a site using Browser mode with ie8 would most likely cure the issue or switching in or out of Comp-view,
But lets first switch to Software rendering/ Alt+TO or Gear symbol on the top right and Internet options,
Advanced section/ Check the top box-Use software rendering..../Apply and Okay.
After that make sure Adobe Reader XI is Enabled/ Use Alt+TA or Gear symbol/ Manage add-ons.
Make sure Active x filtering is not getting in the way/ Alt+T or Gear symbol/ Safety/ Uncheck it.

Please download Ewido Security Suite at http://www.ewido.net/en/download/.

1. Install Ewido Security Suite.
2. When installing, under 'Additional Options' uncheck:
* Install background guard
* Install scan via context menu
3. Launch Ewido, there should be an icon on your desktop, double click it.
4. The program will now open to the main screen.

I need help. Someone installed SpyBot 1.4 on my advice. Now they can not access the internet. They said they received an error when they attempted their first scan and it locked up the PC. Now, if you go back and try the Recovery, you get a Registry recovery error.

They are connected to the internet via USB DSL modem/router. They are receiving a private IP address and Gateway from the modem and can ping the modem. However, nothing past the modem can be pinged.

Just to double-check, I had them connect via dial-up with the same results.

They are running W98SE.

Any suggestions?

I am having trouble with IE (have tried with Firefox and still get same problem). On certain pages, certain sections of those pages will not be displayed and will say "Page cannot be displayed." Also, on the bottom it says "Done but with errors"
Here is a list of some of the sites that do this and the sections so you may get a better idea of what I mean.

www.aol.com - the whole white sections under the aol search and to the left of the Already have high-speed?.....(this section does not say Page cannot be displayed, rather it just doesnt display at all.)

www.nba.com - under the list of games tonight and to the right of the advertisement for the NBA store that says Destination finals, gear up for the ride, shop now displayed in flash. The little box next to it.

www.espn.com - if you scroll all the way down, right under the poll and under the Today in the show listings says page cannot be displayed.]

Another thing i have noticed about this is that these websites have the privacy report icon in the bottom right of the window. However, I have opened that and clicked on always allow cookies and still have the problem. Any clue what may be happening here? I have been working with Hijackthis log help with some popup problems as well. Please get back to me as soon as you can. I appreciate all of the help. Thank you.

P.S. I have removed all spyware/adware removal programs. Have tried disabling my Windows firewall as well as lowering the security set... Read more

A:Certain sections of website say "Page cannot be displayed"

Please download HijackThis - this program will help us determine if there are any spyware/malware on your computer. Create a folder at C:\HJT and move HijackThis.exe there. Double click on the program to run it.

1. If it gives you an intro screen, just choose 'Do a system scan and save a logfile'.
2. If you don't get the intro screen, just hit Scan and then click on Save log.
3. Get HijackThis Analyzer and save it to the same folder as the hijackthis.log file. Run HijackThis Analyzer and type in y if you agree. The result.txt file will open up in Notepad. Copy the whole result.txt log and post it in the HijackThis forum. We do not need the original hijackthis.log (unless we ask for it). Do not fix anything in HijackThis since they may be harmless.
