Preferred Solution: comp. shuts down and wont turn on most times

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

My girlfriends pc this is. It happened when she was using farmville. Got the bsod. PC was working really amazingly beforehand like brand new. Very little software, on it, and no music or movie downloads. No file sharing. Satisfactory AVG etc

bsod.!! arrrggh. I noted down what i could from the first one before it restarted automatically.

A:Newbie bsod. Wont boot, wont even turn on most times, but does sometimes

If I leave it alone for a few hrs, the system might seem like its going to work, the on switch goes blue lit, theres the normal beep it makes, the three lights on the keyboard flash, then i get packard bell screen for split second which gives me options like enter BIOS, but that scares me. Then it will go straight to the American Trends page i explained earlier and wont go further

Then if you switch power off again and see what happens, it may not even power up next time, no blue lit on, a split second of fan noise then nada. Or it may have nothing happen except you can hear the fan running and the dvd drive can open

Of course she cant find her vista disc!!! We will find it 2moro somewhere though. There is no important data on the pc so if it was possible to reinstall vista I would just leave it in to get fixed. I got quoted 25 pounds.

Can anyone help me out or have any clue. My brother had a problem last month with a firefox update which gave him similair trouble. But lucky for him, it resolved itself after 3 days of turning it on/off and hoping for the best

hey, i just finished putting together a pc for my grandpas office, ive checked like 81239812 times, everything is connected properly. When i hit the power button, nothing happens. Not even an attempt to boot, no fans turn on, nothing.

any suggestions??

A:New comp wont turn on

Don't worry this happens all the time! Remember to power off before disconnecting anything. Do you get any beeps? 1 beep is good - more beeps is bad and can tell you what is going wrong.
First take out the motherboard and make sure that there not too many stand-offs; any extras can short out the board.
If this is OK, check you have all the front panel connections on the right pins - an LED connection on the reset button for example will stop it booting.
If this still does not sort it, disconnect everything and take out all the cards except the front panel and power supply cables. Does it boot? Reconnect one thing at a time and that will tell you what is causing the problem.

THe Hard Driver i think is the problem.

the yellow LED on the front is flashing. Whatever I do to the computer it wont turn on, so I pulled the power cord out to stop it(the led that was flashing). When I plugged it back in today, it just started flashing again. The computer is off but it still flashes, . instead of turnign on It just flashes this yellow light. Any ideas? i am runing windows Xp home and a 71GB hard driver
it worked fine when changed the hard driver to another hard driver(20GB Windows Xp media center). i pluged the 71GB as slave and it steal wont turn on.
i really need to access that hard drive my entire website data is in there.
PLease if some one can help me

Thanx in advence

A:HELP MY COMP. Wont turn on

Hi Igli and welcome to the Techspot Forum

First its a Hard Drive not a hard driver, from your post I can only guess that the 71GB Hard Drive has failed, either mechanically or electronically.

Suggestions, go to the maufacturers website and download the test tool for the drive in question and test it, sorry to say if the test tool finds it faulty then all your data is gone.

I was on my computer i got a bright flash and now my comp wont turn on is this just my power supply or worse

A:Comp wont turn on

Where did the bright flash come from?
If you're lucky it's just the power supply. Worst case scenario? Everything in it is fried.
I'd try a different power supply first, then take it from there.

We have a comp plugged into a surge protector, and when you flip the switch, it won't turn on unless you flip it on-off for about a minute (literally) We tried plugging it into the wall, and a different surge protector, and same problem. Is the relay switch inside the comp going bad?? If so, how do we fix it?

hi there

my problem is the following..sometimes (happened 3 times so far) my PC just shuts down (usually when am playing games), i wouldn't call it shut down though..the fans still running but the screen goes blank and it stays that way...if i try to restart it doesn't respond so i unplug the power and try to boot it up again..i get the fans running but my mobo start beep wont sound off like usual..so basiccaly i get the fans running and the screen is still black then nothing, it stays that way..

i try and remove some ram sticks (got 4x1G) one by one without luck..so i leave it that way for like an hour and when i try again with all 4 rams in place it starts!!..

the second time it didn't start again till i put just 1 ram.it booted up..i put 2 rams together..it boots up..put 3 it still does..but when i put the 4 together i get an abnormal long beep and nothing..just the blank screen..leave it for an hour, put all 4 , and it starts again!!

now this time (3rd) i remove all rams and disconnected the power for like 30 mins then put them all in again and it booted up..i ran memtest on all 4 together with no errors, so now i am running memetest on each one alone..so far 2 passed with no errors and am still testing..

am starting to think it's not my ram..but every thing else is kinda new..my rig

A:PC shuts down, wont turn on for a while then it just does!

If the computer was operating without any errors before it died, then I would suspect the power supply. If you have another computer, you could try and swap the power supply.
The first thing I would do is check the power cord and make sure it did come unplugged.
If the power light is off — The computer is either turned off or is not receiving power.
• Reset the power cable into both the power connector on the back of the computer and the electrical outlet.
• If the computer is plugged into a power strip, ensure that the power strip is plugged into an electrical outlet and that the power strip is turned on.
• Ensure that the electrical outlet is working by testing it with another device, such as a lamp.
• Bypass power protection devices, power strips, and power extension cables to verify that the computer turns on.
• Ensure that the main power cable is securely connected to the system board.
• Ensure that the front panel cable is securely connected to the system board.
• Toggle the voltage selection switch on the back of the computer. For more

As title says, computer randomly shut off without warning and won't turn back on. However if I wait for a while or reset the bios by removing the battery it will then decide to start again. It seems to occur when I am putting decent load on the system, and will always happen after about ten minutes of running prime95.

My initial thoughts are overheating however monitoring with core temp the CPU never goes above 65 degrees. Another weird thing is after the shutdown the bios will reset by itself if I wait. I tested the PSU with a multimeter and the voltages are fine. I'm thinking PSU, CPU or mobo. What are your thoughts?

A:shuts off then wont turn on for a while

Another strange thing I've noticed. If I plug the CPU fan into the CPU fan connector on the motherboard the system overheats when under load. As the CPU heats up the fan seems to slow down. Starting at about 1100rpm and slowing to about 600rpm as the CPU overheats. I shut it off at 80 to prevent damage. I tried all the different fan settings - pwm, voltage and running at max all with the same result.

If i plug the fan directly into the PSU it doesn't overheat, but system still shuts off.

Im not sure what to do! Don't want to start replacing parts if I don't know what the problem is.

I'm running a Prescott P4 3.2 gHz, 1.5 gigs of ram, nVidia 5500 card, on an ASRock Motherboard model p4v88, running WinXp sp2 and every single update...

Last night I shut down the system before I left with no problems. I haven't had *any* problems with it, really, as long as I've owned it. I take great care of it and it's been devoid of viruses or disk error or anything since I've had it (only 5 months). Also no BIOS updates in a long time, and no windows updates in a few weeks.

This morning I pushed power and the fans whirred up for maybe a half a second before the system turned off. I pushed power again and the same thing happened. I unplugged everything from the back but the power, same. I opened it up (unplugged) and pulled out the ram - same. Uplugged the harddrives - same. Cdroms/pci cards/video card/ etc., until the only thing that was plugged in was the motherboard. I'm still having the same problem. The little green LED on the front of the case remains lit even tho the sys isn't on. I think the PSU is okay... what the hell could the problem be? The computer was plugged into a surge protector so I don't think it got a shock. I haven't like spilled water on it or anthing.. ahh...

A:Comp Wont Turn On - No Symptoms!

Read other 12 answers

Well my computer doesn't turn on anymore. It was working fine and then the power cord of the surge got unplugged from the outlet. Needless to say the comp wont turn on anymore. I was wondering if its the psu or the mobo that has messed up. When I plug in the comp the steady power light turns on, on the mobo which i assume it means it receiving some type of power. But when I press the power button the led lights of comp flash on and then turn back off. So does anybody know if its the psu or the mobo that is damaged?

A:Comp Wont Turn ON is it the PSU or the Mobo

Probably Power Supply (hard to say really)

Just for a quick option:

Remove the power cord
Hold the On button in for 30 secs (releasing all internal voltage)
Put the power cord back in (securely)
Turn on (I hope)

ok, so lets start like this: i dont know too much about computers, but i did a little research. i know what the motherboard is and i know that the actual power button on the tower just sends the signal to switch on or off to the power supply unit... And i havent done anything to my computer recently just have gone online. So All i did was shut my computer down last night, and it WOULDNT TURN ON this morning.
- i already tried unplugging and plugging back in, and changed the the power bar. everything else on the bar works (my light, the monitor, the dsl box, and the speakers) except the computer base.

A:I Really Need Help. Comp Wont Turn On, No Idea Why

It could be a power supply issue, have you made any hardware changes lately? Also, is the power button wire correctly placed in the slot on the mobo (could've been loose)?

hello and to start off i'd like to thank anyone who takes time to read this and try to help me out, thank you.

I'm running win xp sp2.

On July 1st an infected file was downloaded and run. AVG and Winpatrol noticed this and prompted the user to take action. The user checked to block all changes that the infected file tried to make, and deleted the file. Then music started to come from the speakers. All kinds of completly random stuff that is not installed on the computer. In task manager there was a file "c.exe" after ending this process the music stopped and it never came back. I don't know if it is related, but the next day the computer started to have problems.

Gaim 99% of the time hangs and timeouts when trying to connect a screen name. I do not have a firewall and windows one is disabled.

To get firefox to work, i had to open the browser, it wouldnt appear on screen but the process showed in task manager. Then i used task manager to end the process tree. Then when i opened the browser it would open but run slowly. This no longer works. Now when i click to open it nothing happens and the process does not show up in task manager.

Internet explorer works fine and that is what i'm using to write this. The computer was also having this overall lag with everything i'd try to do on it. Ex: open the start menu, open folders, etc. However as of this last computer restart, not that i've done anything to fix it, the computer runs at normal spe... Read more

rick is right about what is the most likely cause of the lockups ( drivers) with via chipsets I have found the most common source of instability to be problems with the USB drivers. many times people do not even load the drivers which are seperate download and install from the via 4 in 1 drivers.

the very first thing to check is device manager and make sure there are not question marks or triangles with exclamation points in them next to any devices.

And I immediately switch the power off and then turn it on again after a couplea minutes and then it'll go to the black screen with the option "Start Windows Normally" which I always choose and everything is ok and all but then in a couplea days it happens again.

This has been going on for quite sometime as everytime it happens, I get really nervous coz i dont know the cause of the problem.

Would really appreciate your expert advice on to wat may be causing this sudden shut down and is it causing harm to my PC and how i can prevent it and all.

What is the cause of this and is there anyway that I can keep it from happening? Also, it takes a lonk time to load even though it is just a homepage (http://www.optonline.net/Home ). Is there someway that I can speed this up?

Help please!! I am rather new to the world of computers, but I have just built my own in the last week. After assembling all the parts, I popped in windows XP to load and it seemed to do it allright. Then it restarted the computer. I got to the same place and I think I may have loaded it a second time. I couldn't figure out what to do so I shut it down myself. The next day, I turned it on and it said that it had quit working due to an incorrectly set processor speed. I am running an AMD XP 3000 (400fsb), so I set it to 2100Mhz. It then proceeded to load a bunch of stuff and then, it said "loading windows" and promptly shut down. I pressed the power button and nothing happened. I waited and flipped the power switch a few times. Finally, it comes back on, only to shut down at the same place. I took out XP and stuck in the Western Digital help CD, which caused it to shut down faster, as soon as it began loading from the CD. I don't know what to do!! I tried again and took the disk out, but it stopped the systerm and said something about bdos... I need help. Does anyone know whatI should do? My system has an Asus A7V600-X mobo, an 80 gig Western Digital HD, 512 mb of PC3200 Corsair value RAM, a 480 watt psu, an nvidia geforce4 mx4000 graphics card, and, ummm.... lots and lots of fans. My case lights up too...but right now, it's just an expensive paperweight. One that lights up. Oh, and the XP 3000 was OEM, but everything else came new in a package.

I built the following computer:

Antec SLK2650-BQE with 350W PS
Intel Pentium 4 3.0 GHz
Two Corsair ValueSelect 256 MB DDR400
ATI Radeon X550
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 Platinum with Front Panel Jacks

It's running a fresh install of Windows XP Home. At random times, it will shut off by itself with no error message -- sometimes after an hour, sometimes after a day or two, sometimes with applications running, sometimes with nothing running. It boots back up fine and has no other issues. All drivers and BIOS are latest and nothing is flagged in the hardware manager.

The ASUS PC Probe reports CPU temperatures no higher than 53 C, even under continuous heavy load, and all voltages stay very close to spec (within 0.3 V).

Any ideas?

Thanks. Larry

A:Computer shuts off at random times

Forgot to mention

I forgot to mention that the Intel Pentium 4 630 didn't come with any thermal paste, so I didn't apply that below the stock heatsink.

Is that an issue?

Would the ASUS Probe report a false heat score and the CPU actually be considerably hotter?

It could be your battery is not working right or your charger... some kinda short circuit messed either up, but im not sure though. Or you didnt remove the driver properly if thats whats causing it.

We have Win7 Home Premium on a Compaq CQ2014...AMD E300, Radeon graphics, 3gb RAM, 500gb HDD, Realtek HD audio. About 3.5 yrs old, faithfully updated, but I'm sure there are other, largely hidden issues I don't know about, or would take much too long to find out.

Antivirus is MSSE, and I also have Malwarebytes products (needed their rootkit one just the other day when some **** dumped something in our application data folder)

Lately there are times of the day, mostly late at night around 11pm to 12mid, when it gets nearly to the end of shutdown, then stops. No disk activity at all. (Turned verbose on, it says "shutting down" when this happens.) If the power is shut off manually at said point, there are no visible problems if/when it is restarted in the morning.

Should I look into, say, M'soft SDK for a trace?

Thanks for anything you can suggest/provide.

A:Shuts down most times, but not late at night

If the problem occurred AFTER installing Malwarebytes then uninstall it and give System Restore a try.

I have a perplexing issue.

The internet at a clients office, they lose their internet at exactly 4:30pm, and they get it back at exactly 4:45pm

I already checked the router, not only is the time restriction not set, it doesn't even exist, there is also no third party firewall. I would normally suspect virus, but this is odd behavior that i've never seen a virus do.

Any thoughts?

EDIT: Malwarebytes reports no infection

A:Internet shuts off at set times consistantly

Exactly what happens?

What is the frequency..."consistently" is pretty vague, IMO.

How many systems are involved?

If others...do they lose connectivity?

Anyone consult the ISP?

I has been doing this for a while. I am surfing the net and it will shut down with no warning, then sometimes it turns back on on it's own and immediately shuts down again then repeats this sometimes. Sometimes i will turn it off and it will turn on in the middle of the night on it's own.

My PC is an XP Home, service pack 2.
My internet has been acting strangely lately. Sometimes it comes up with a white page or takes a couple of trys, also difficult to close at times.
These messages are now showing and the pages closes down even when I try to debug, also it closes down immediately at times when I click on something and sometimes I can't type on the search line.

dbgheap.c, line 1132, debug errorm debug assertion failed, breakpoint.

I have disabled 3rd party browser extensions, and have took off Google as my search engine.
I'm clean of malware or viruses.

Go easy on explaining to me, I'm a senior and a little slower then I'd like to be at times understanding.
Thank you.

Hi .

What browser? What version?

You realize that not having SP3 installed...makes your system more vulnerable to malware....than it would be if you had SP3 installed?

While online through AOL dialup my computer will randomly shut down and leave the blue screen message that Zorro had in another problem. I could not find if Zorro got a solution but I hope he did.

This problem origninally occurred anytime but has refined itself now to just when we are online.

This is a new computer, home built, XP PRo, Pentium 4, 586 ram, 1.2 G harddrive...anything else you need to know, please advise.

Sadly my Advent 9215 has a habit of shutting off sometimes and it is annoying.
I am aware of my laptop being fairly warm but no where near too hot!
Weirdly it refuses to turn on afterwards sometimes without the power lead plugged in. Weird or what... and it wasn't low on battery! Is a cooler pad worth a try. I cleaned the fan in January, shall I clean it again?

Hope you can help!

When I try to install Windows XP onto my computer, my computer shuts down. I'm pretty sure I have enough power, as I am using a Intel i3 and the only other things that require power are my CD Drive and my Graphics card (NVidia GeForce 210, which can be seen here http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5271085&CatId=28). They are all low profile things, and I am running on a 300 watt power supply. All fans are spinning, and I connected everything correctly. No noises happen when it shuts down, it just does it.Do I have to buy a new PSU?

A:Computer Shuts Off Multiple Times

A 300w power supply would not be considered enough power. It may be tht you need a new power supply. More along the lines of a quality manufacturer 450 or 500 watt power supply. Corsair, OCZ, Thermaltake, Enermax, Seasonic, PC Power and Cooling are quality manufacturers among a few others.
