(Vista) Computer freezing, incredibly slow with firefox, sometimes won't start fully on startup [Computer 1]

Q: (Vista) Computer freezing, incredibly slow with firefox, sometimes won't start fully on startup [Computer 1]

I have a HP Pavillion dv9417ca Notebook PC with AMD Turion 64X2 Mobile Technology Tl-56, 2.0G Ram, NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150 with Vista Ultimate 64-bit SP2.

The computer when running slowly makes a ton of noise starting up and running and tends to use more processing. The computer sometimes makes weird noises that aren't normal windows sounds and come from error's. Like intense beeping noises ocassionally. Firefox especially is insanely slow and the longer I run it the more processing power it uses up along with the plugins.exe. Sometimes it will uses so much that it completely freezes my computer. Lately I've also been having trouble starting the computer where it won't even load windows.

I've ran Ccleaner daily and Malwarebytes weekly and find nothing and the problem has been getting progressively worse. I have Avast which updates daily.

Preferred Solution: (Vista) Computer freezing, incredibly slow with firefox, sometimes won't start fully on startup [Computer 1]

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hopefully I have the right section. I have a few problems that I hope to get help with.

My computer is starting slowly. I don't notice it so much but when checking my performace information it says that startup programs are causing windows to slow. When I clicked to see what the program was it it says:

Onecare firewall service
msfwsvc.exe.
Date reported March 24 2009.

Can I remove it from the list or is it needed?

Also, when I clicked on the event log, I was getting a lot of critical, warnings and errors reported. Most of them are in regards to event id 100 boot performance monitoring and event id 200 shutdown performance monitoring. There are other event id numbers as well but these are the main ones. I am not entirely too sure what they mean or how to fix them.

Finally, my firefox is freezing alot and I am getting a lot of non-responses from it. Pages such as Myspace are taking a long time to load and then will freeze. At times, it will take 30 secs-a few minutes to load and if it freezes it takes a little while for it to come good or I will just close Firefox and start again. Having more than one tab open also seems to make it freeze alot more than it used to.

I didn't expect to have so much trouble since my laptop is fairly new. I am using a Vista service pack 2.

Any help is appreciated.
Thank you.

is taking forever to startup (2-3 mins waiting for login screen, another 5-6 minutes until I can see my desktop icons or perform any kind of actions) and once it does start it has some major intermittent speed/freezing issues. It seems that all programs are affected, some more than others. Windows Explorer freezes up pretty frequently, as well as things like my word processor, browser (both Chrome and Firefox), Steam, etc. However, infrequently as it is, the freezing and speed issues will stop and the laptop will fine again, I can resume activities from playing games to web browsing and it remains unaffected for a brief time. The problem is definitely most noticeable during startup and when trying to do things with Windows Explorer or anything in folders, control panel etc. It's essentially become unusable. Below is a HiJack this system log thing, that is if I did it correctly. Thanks to anyone who can help me with this, if there is more info needed let me know.

Go to Run and type 'msconfig' then go to the startup tab and remove anything that isnot needed, i.e. updaters, anything relating to itunes etc. Google if not sure and see if that makes any diffrence.

Hello!! This seems to be the best place to find out some answers! A few weeks ago, I had a nasty virus on my computer. Luckily I had internet on my phone and was able to look up how to remove the virus and thought the problem was taken care of. Over the last week or so my computer has slowed to turtle speed, when I click on any program to open it, I can walk away and do something else for 10 mins or so as that is how long it takes to open. I have run MalwareBytes as well as my Antivirus program(norton security suite) and they have found nothing. Granted I have only been able to do a quick scan for av, I tried a full scan and it took 6 days to go through 170,000+ files and wasn't even close to done. So I'm not sure if the virus wasn't fully removed, as I thought, or if this is a ripple effect from having a virus.

And now, upon restarting my computer this morning, it told me that it found new hardware, unknown, that needed to be installed. One of my drivers just disappeared it seems. I'm not sure how, why or what caused this but is there a way to fix it?

My computer has been running very slow lately and even freezes most of the time when getting to the desktop in normal mode. I was able to startup in Safe mode with networking and run several scans, including A-squared and Spybot. I get an error when trying to launch Ad-Aware. Each of the scans found a few things and I deleted them. The computer is currently allowing me into normal mode, but takes a long time to boot, freezes several times before I am able to do anything, and is even freezing as I am typing this message. Below is my HJT log. Any help you may be able to give me to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated.

So I've noticed today that my computer is starting up a bit slow, it takes awhile for the icons/gadgets/dock to appear, and instead of starting up with my wallpaper it comes up a black screen and then after that my normal desktop appears. Also it takes a bit longer to log in after entering my passcode...a bit strange.

Also as I have been working in some computer programs such as Photoshop or Skype, or even browsing through my photo files they tend to freeze up at times before coming back and responding. My internet sometimes freezes as well while scrolling.

I just want to make sure that it is not infected. I did update about two days ago...not sure if that has anything to do with it.
Thank you very much so taking your time to help! I appreciate it.

Hi,

With the above problems suddenly appearing, I have done the following:
Disk Clean
Defrag (even though the system said it wasn't necessary at this time)
McAfee Full System Scan (no problems found)
AVG Antivirus Full System Scan (a few problems found and successfully removed)
Spybot Full Scan (problems successfully removed)
Spyzooka 2.5 Full Scan (problems successfully removed)

Running the following:
Windows Defender
Spyware Guard
AdWare

I have also run msconfig and unchecked start-up programs that aren't needed, this seemed to help a lot, but the system still locks up after a while.

I also created a new Firefox profile as I have read that "old" profiles will tend to slow down after time. This help with the subsequent first couple of browser opens, but has again slowed down.

A:Computer Slow, Freezing, and Firefox slow

Hello and welcome to TSF.

You are running two antivirus applications, i.e. AVG and McAfee.

While this may seem like greater protection, it can cause problems including slowdowns and system hangs. Keep one and uninstall the other.

Any antivirus program must be removed via add/remove program.
For any program that doesn't have an add/remove entry, you will have to do this:
re-install the program -> reboot -> uninstall

As stated in our pre-posting sticky...NEW INSTRUCTIONS - Read This Before Posting For Malware Removal Help

Quote:

3. Uninstall the following via Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel:
? If you have more than one antivirus software installed, leave only ONE and uninstall the others.

If you're still having issues, please provide the logs requested in the above sticky.

Please note that the forum is very busy and if I don?t hear from you in three days this thread will be closed.

Hello,

I am having a few problems with my maching that I want to get resolved.

Firstly, I keep getting a some IE7 popups when I am logged on to firefox. These popups are usually related to whatever page I'm on in fireforx (i.e. if I'm on nfl.com on firefox, the IE7 pop-up will be something about sports). I don't use internet explorer and recently started using Chrome to combat this problem but Firefox is my preferred browser.

Second, my Firefox keeps freezing when I do try to use it and it has gotten progressively worse over the past week. Previously, I could use firefox despite the IE7 pup-ups but now firefox usually freezes or hangs for a few minutes. It seems to be working now as I am using Firefox to post this message.

Thanks for any help you can lend me.

My comp has been incredibly slow for a while now. i thought it was an installed software's problem, but now i'm sure it's permanent, since the software was uninstalled. I own an HP 3200 AMD Athlon with 512MB Ram and it runs Windows XP Home edition. I have tried lots and lots of software like registry cleaners, I have zonealarm and norton with windows defender, and Malware Guard and have used CCleaner recently as well as Spybot S&D and ad-aware, and a-squared. But somehow, even after lots of bad files and viruses etc have been deleted my comp is still very very slow. Please Help.
Thank you!

Hello All,

I have a (old) Samsung X20 1.6 GHz. 2 GB Ram. Running XP Professional SP3

I know it is by far not a quick computer but I have had problems recently with it becoming locked up and very slow. It does not crash but becomes very hot.

The main issue is CPU usage is taken up to 100% for extended periods and sometimes the RAM useage to over 1 GB. The main use is from BitDefender ? vsserv.exe. But sometimes it is also normal programs such as iexplorer, msnmessenger, bittorrent etc I?d say about 70% is the BitDefender.

I originally had Bitdefender Total security 2008. After the first time having this issue I received ?help? from their support people. They gave me the upgrade to 2010 and the same problem came back. They then suggested that I remove all the other security software I had running. This was software provided by my bank for online banking. This was indeed removed and no problems for a week or so. Then back to having problems again! Frustrated I uninstalled BitDefender and ran the computer without any protection. Realizing this was a little unwise I reinstalled it again to get a very slow computer!
I have taken the advice from the ?Is your PC running slow...?? forum. I have run disk cleaners, registry cleaners, anti malware, anti spywear, spybot, startlite and full up to date virus checks.

I really do not want to reformat the computer again? I have many things set up just how I like them!!

So? Any advice greatly appreciated. Please be basic wi... Read more

A:Incredibly Slow Computer - Help!

have you started up in safe mode, to see whether the pc behaves properly or does exactly the same thing? Could you also say what registry cleaners you have been using.

Another thing to try is to click on the windows key, click on run, type msconfig and go to the start up tab. See if there is anything you do not need to start with xp and untick the item - it may be that something is conflicting with bit defender. You say that you removed your online banking software and then the pc was ok for a week or so, then problems again: had you reinstalled your online banking software?

Please post back after trying safe mode: there seem to be a lot of people having had this issue with vsserv.exe so hopefully there will be a fix!

Hi there,

My computer became suddenly very slow about a week ago. It takes an age to startup and running programs is quite out of the question. The memory and CPU usage doesn't seem to be too out of the ordinary, it just seems weird that its gone from just running fine to this slow so sudden. I use microsoft security essentials, and malwarebytes for virus and malware scans, and try to defragment once a week. I am unsure if this slowdown is being caused by a virus / malware or if it may possibly be a hardware issue with my RAM or hard drive, but any help would be greatly appreciated as I am about to start an open university course and really need the use of a working computer!
One other thing I thought would be worth mentioning is that I have had some intermittent problems with steam files becoming corrupt, and am unsure if this may be related to any of the problems I'm having.

Hi.

My computer 's performance and internet connection has significantly slowed down since I downloaded and installed Norton security 360 (90 day trial) two days ago. (I have a Vista 32 bit)

To try and resolve this I have scanned my whole computer for any bugs or unwanted programs, i have also deleted any old cookies, etc. I have also reset my internet explorer settings. But nothing seems to work.

I have contacted my Internet service provider and they say there is no problem from their side.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Hi TITCH007...can you post some screenshots of your running processes please? Just open your Task Manager, select the Processes tab and take a series of screenshots showing the entire list.

Also, have a look in your Event Log and Device Manager for any errors or alerts please.

- Click Start -> Run -> type:
eventvwr.msc
- Click OK
- This will open your Event Log, check in the Applications and System section for any repeated errors

To check your Device Manager, type the following into the Run dialogue box:
devmgmt.msc
When it opens, select View -> Show hidden devices

My computer has been getting progressively slower and slower. I have done everything I can on my end (Deleting of old files, disk defragmentaion, etc.) No significant change has been made. Startup of the computer itself takes upwards of 5 minutes and opening folders or starting programs is a nightmare. And so I present my HJT and RR reports and turn things over to you guys.

I'm asking this for a relative who called me earlier with a computer problem.

Their computer is running very slow and they can't access the taskbar sometimes. It takes 5+ minutes just to open a folder. This all happened after they exited a game called Magic Vines that they have on their computer. After they exited the game some white boxes popped up on the screen. They also said that sometimes they get a gray screen.

They ran an antivirus program twice and it didn't show anything. They're still trying to run a spyware program (it's taking forever). They had recently installed some screensavers from Freeze.com. After this problem happened, they removed the screensavers and the wallpaper, then rebooted. It took over 10 minutes to reboot. But now they can access the desktop.

The computer is new, they've had it for 3-4 months. It's running Win XP Home, it's a Pentium 4 (I think), over 2.4 GHz, over 512 MB RAM, 100+ GB Hard Drive, wireless internet (DSL). They use AOL and Norton Internet Security 2005 (I think).

Norton showed that it needed to be updated but when they tried to update it, it showed that it already was up-to-date.

Any ideas as to what the problem could be/ why the computer is so slow?

I'm thinking it's either spyware from the screensavers or something to do with that game (Magic Vines).

Hi

Recently (last month or so) my laptop has been running very very slowly. I have tried everything: anti virus/spyware protection, disk cleanup, disk defragmentation but nothing seems to speed it up.

There are times where the computer will be fine, and run quite normal, but the majority of the time, it is very slow.

I have an Acer TravelMate 240, 2.6 Ghz, about 18gb of free space left. I dont really know what else to include. I have only had this laptop for less than a year, and just a few months back it was normal. I did have some spyware problems in February but after that it was fine.

I will be very grateful for whatever help you can give me.

Hello.
I have been having bsod issues for a while now, and I think the computer freezing and 5-7 minute start up times are all closely related.

The machine is a custom build but I don't have access to the one who built it. The machine has been like this since I got it but haven't thought much about it until recently.

I've tried optimizing the startup by going through and modifying the startup programs, like is the first step to do in getting a better start up speed, but no success.
I've taken it to an IT place where they ran antivirus stuff against it and that didn't help much either.

I don't know what further information I need to post here, so please let me know what I can do to get a reasonable start up time and stop having freezing issues (seems to be a driver related thing, not sure), and get rid of these bsods.

Note: After running the bsod program, it takes a while, but the generated .zip file has nothing in it.

Hello,
my computer has been slowing down for awhile, but I am hoping that I do not need to reload it. The slowness has been tolerable until lately when it got a lot worse. Also, it is now very glitchy. For example, usually when I have firefox open it will often freeze for about 10 seconds roughly every 2 minutes. During this time I can still move the mouse, but I cannot click anything in firefox, nor switch to any other programs that I have open. It sometimes does this without firefox being open, but seems to happen more often with it open.
If someone could please look at my log and help me to clean up some stuff on my computer that would be great. But if it comes to it, I could reload the computer. I have windows XP, and I have heard that it is good to reload that every couple of years.

Hiya

Are you still having this problem? If so, do the following:
Download TFC by OldTimer to your desktop

Please double-click TFC.exe to run it. (Note: If you are running on Vista, right-click on the file and choose Run As Administrator).
It will close all programs when run, so make sure you have saved all your work before you begin.
Click the Start button to begin the process. Depending on how often you clean temp files, execution time should be anywhere from a few seconds to a minute or two. Let it run uninterrupted to completion.
Once it's finished it should reboot your machine. If it does not, please manually reboot the machine yourself to ensure a complete clean.

Please download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here or Here

Double Click mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
Once the program has loaded, select "Perform Quick Scan", then click Scan.
The scan may take some time to finish,so please be patient.
When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
When disinfection is completed, a log will open in Notepad and you may be prompted to Restart.(See Extra Note)

Hi there folks.

I am posting this on behalf of my dad. His computer running really really slow. I have done a lot of the things in Glaswegians "computer running slow" thread but even that took me ages as going between files and folders was so slow. His hard drive has plenty of room and when I look at his CPU usage by pressing ctrl alt delete it is sitting at roughly 10%

I was wondering if running a DDS and posting it up here you guys might be able to spot what the problem is.

I will post the two DDS reports in the next posts to keep it tidy.

I?m running windows XP home 2002, SP3.

I have a really old laptop that is running incredibly slow and I would like to make sure it isn?t infected. I removed upwards of 30 pieces of malware using malwarebytes and AVG free. I put the computer through a slew of different virus scans and it is now coming up clean but it is still ridiculously slow. I?ve read the article on this site concerning slow computers and I?ve done everything I can do that isn?t above my half decent computer knowledge. Considering how many viruses I deleted and how long they have been on the computer it's probable that there are several that have become undetectable with my scans. At this point I want to rule out a virus before continuing on other avenues.

I defragged and cleaned out temp files using built in windows tools and downloaded tools. I Ran a system file scan, which closed when finished without displaying anything, so I assumed it found no problems. I Installed winpatrol and stopped a lot of startup programs to speed up startup. I Ran chkdsk. I Ran a free avg system tune up, and a few other things. After all this and more it?s not in much better condition.

Hope to hear you from you soon.

I am asking this question for a friend of mine who is computer illerate! haha
Basically, everything she does with her computer is slow, programs, internet, AOL AIM, etc. I have done numereous things to help her out: delelted cookies/disk cleanup, defraged, ran virus scans. Nothing helps, it seems her computer is getting worse. Someone else installed some Mcaffee program for her, a security type thing call Virus-Scan On Access. She has no recently gotten a pop-up from the Virus-scan saying she has a virus alert. However, she cant fix, clean, remove or delete the alert/virus.
She doesnt ever use her computer for anything but a few websites/check emails, to write papers, and to chat on AOL.
I talked to someone else, and they suggested reinstalling her windows program.
Is there anything else she can do to 'fix' her many comp. problems?
She has a toshiba laptop with windows 2000. Neither toshiba or best buy( where she bought her laptop) will help her solve her issues with high priced service fees.

I just got a new computer, and it's insanely slow loading websites. Sometimes it does not load them at all, and gives me the button I can click on to diagnose connection problems. However, it doesn't find anything when I click the button.

Anyways, I'm using Windows 7 Home Premium, and I'm on a desktop connecting to a wireless network with a usb card for PCs. I double-checked before buying it to make sure it was compatible with windows 7....And it seems to be working just fine.

Anyways, when I right-click the connection and click on Status, and then hit the Diagnose button, I get different messages almost every time.

Here's what I get sometimes:

Problems found: The default gateway is not available. Fixed.

Other times, I get:

Troubleshooting couldn't identify the problem.

But most of the time, I get:

Your computer appears to be correctly configured, but the device or resource (DNS server) is not responding.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

I'm using a 802.11 USB Wireless LAN Card (manufacturer: Ralink Tech.), and I installed the update for it that was recommended in Windows Updates (and my Windows is up-to-date).

Here are the model numbers I found on the devices that connect me to the wireless network (I know nothing about computers, so sorry, I don't know what they are called): Motorola SURFboard model SB5100 and Linksys WRT54GS.

Let me know if you need any more info, and any help would be very much appreciated .

I am running PC, Windows XP and recently had several viruses deleted from system. Problem started when running Internet Explorer and would receive an error tab every time stating IE must close. The data error was a mcsvrt.dll problem.

Now when I start the computer it takes 10-15 minutes to boot completely and accessing Mozilla or any apps after about 3-4 mins takes ages. It runs so slow, something has it almost completely bogged down. I run spybot but after a while it freezes up.

Not sure what to do???

Hello.

It seems that my HP laptop is experienceing a number of issues. With more and more frequency the computer freezes: i.e., it locks up so that I cannot use it. Normally it corrects itself after a minute or so. Sometimes I can move the cursor; somethimes I can't. Sometimes I can tab between programs; sometimes I can't. Often the spinning blue circle appears and often the screen grays out. I assume, without knowing, that some other program is using the computer's resources.Any idea on what this could be or how I could fix the issue?

Also, I notice that my computer is booting up more slowly than it used to. Any idea on how to speed up the start-up process?

Thanks.

Hello there, I am new to these boards.

I need some help with making my computer run more quickly. There are 2 problems I have noticed.

I have a new Thinkpad T61 which I bought only a month ago, I use XP SP3 it takes almost 4 minutes in total from hitting the power button to being able to use the internet. A screen before a login screen says "Windows is Starting up..." and that stays there normally for at least a minute, that is the brunt of the problem.

Also I noticed when I am using FireFox alot, it freezes up and it says Page Not Responding on top but then after about 10 seconds usually its fine. Any ideas on either of these?

Here are the programs installed on my computer:

AIM
Mozilla
MS Office 2007
Adobe Reader
eBay Turbo Lister
iTunes
Quicktime Player
WMP

and then other things that came with the comp that look important (Access Connections, PC Doctor, etc) I deleted the excess advertised programs that come with computers (not on my comp but example free AOL and such).

Thanks for your help!

Tom

A:Computer takes incredibly long time to start, any help?

gonna need more info. what are your comp specs? ram? cpu speed?

without that info, i can say: run ccleaner, defrag your hdd (with something like perfect disk 7), and eliminate unnecessary start up programs (start-up inspector).

I have a Intel Core 2 Dou 1.86ghz with 3GB of ram running Windows XP SP3.

I hooked up a corrupted hard drive to my computer to try to recover some data, and ever since then it takes 2 and a half minutes to come up with the log-in screen, and another 5 and a half minutes for the computer to completely load everything once I log in. That means from turning on the computer, and being able to use it, I have to wait 8 minutes. And even then it doesn't fully load everything...if I want everything to load, I have to log out after logging in, and then log in again.
Before all of this, I was up and running in less than a minute, so something is seriously wrong.

I have posted on many forums, but no one seems to want to help.

Please...if theres anyone on here that can help me even in the slightest bit, I would be so greatful.

I am pretty technically inclined, but can't seem to figure out what happened.

I don't have many things loading at start up, just the essentials (networking, anti virus, etc...)

Thank you ahead of time!

Well, some time ago I played my PC and it loaded perfectly fine. I had about 6-7 games installed (Ghost Recon Online, Aion, Mabinogi, DC Universe, etc) and then the next day upon opening my computer, it loaded VERY VERY slowly. Start up would take anywhere from 15-30 minutes, and loading any page (web page, computer, any process) would take a huge amount of time to do. Not to mention it also freezes before trying to load the page. I thought it was because I had too much *stuff* on my computer, so I reformatted it. I had Windows 7 Home premium installed at the time.

Nvidia GeForce 220 Series
8GB ram
Intel core i-3 2.33GHz
1 TB hard drive

I had bought Windows 7 Ultimate recently, so I tried installing it since Ultimate seems more awesome than Home Premium (not sure of the difference, I didn't check it beforehand) and installed that upon reformatting my computer. Still, after doing that the computer loaded the same. VERY VERY slowly. I didn't hear any *hard drive failing* sounds such as a ticking or flailing violin, but since my computer has 920GB of space left and my desktop is virtually clean, I'm not sure what to do now.

So is it my hard drive being bad? Or could it be other parts of the computer as well?
Could it be that I installed a different version of Windows 7? I read somewhere that some hard drives don't support certain Windows, so I am not sure since they are still both Windows 7.

My computer also came with 3 DVDs that had the computer name la... Read more
