All files show empty, no items on desk top except recycle bin, only solitare usable, cant run any program

Q: All files show empty, no items on desk top except recycle bin, only solitare usable, cant run any program

I am using Windows 7 with IE8. How it hsppened: I have been looking to buy a car and a guy emailed me and I thought it was a scam and then IO found the listing on eBay. On the auction page there was a tab that said "report item" I clicked it and it went to what looked to be an eBay chat, never used it beofre so I didnt know what one would look like, it looked pretty good. Person came on and asked what my problem was and I gave the auction number and the so called eBay person stated eBay backed the auction with their 50,000.00 guarantee and the user had been on since 2002 and kept on and on and offered to help me buy the car. It did have a 100% feedback 106 purchases. Ok so I called out after I figured the whoel thing was BS and he started rambling all kinds of weird stuff and then my computer acts weird. I figured he must of loaded something to me. So that is what happened. I know the guy pulled the ad and deleted the profile. I guess he won though. What the computer is doing: all my files are stating they are empty, nothing except solitare is working, the desktop is empty except the recycle bin. If I try to run Malwarebytes from the desktop I get an error. The error states "An error has ocurred. Please report this error code to our support team. PROGRAM_ERROR_UPDATING(12007,0,WinHttpSendRequest). I went to "Am I infected" and was directed the run "Window Recovery 7" I ran the rkill and it stated it stopped "InfDefaultInstall.exe". I then ran tdsskiller and it found nothing. I ran Malwarebytes and it would not allow me to update. Per the instructions I came to this forum.I have: Put in safe mode networking, run rkill, run Malwarebyes non-updated since I cant, unhide.exe, ran tdsskiler and can not tell I have done anything to help.I have follow the instruction and the start of the forum and posted the log below as requested. It has been a long time since I did a back up, I know, I know, but I got lazy. I cant get it to do a back up now because of the problem. Just let me know what to do next and again thank you. .DDS (Ver_2011-06-11.01) - NTFSAMD64 NETWORKInternet Explorer: 8.0.7600.16385Run by Robert Hill at 7:26:32 on 2011-06-11Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 6.1.7600.0.1252.1.1033.18.3838.3116 [GMT -5:00].AV: avast! Preferred Solution: All files show empty, no items on desk top except recycle bin, only solitare usable, cant run any program

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello and welcome to the forums! My secret agent name on the forums is SweetTech (you can call me ST for short), it's a pleasure to meet you. I am very sorry for the delay in responding, but as you can see we are at the moment being flooded with logs which, when paired with the never-ending shortage of helpers, resulted in the delayed responding to your thread.I would be glad to take a look at your log and help you with solving any malware problems. If you have since resolved the issues you were originally experiencing, or have received help elsewhere, please inform me so that this topic can be closed. If you have not, please adhere to the guidelines below and then follow instructions as outlined further below:Logs from malware removal programs (OTL is one of them) can take some time to analyze. I need you to be patient while I analyze any logs you post. Please remember, I am a volunteer, and I do have a life outside of these forums.
Please make sure to carefully read any instruction that I give you. Attention to detail is important! Since I cannot see or directly interact with your computer I am dependent on you to "be my eyes" and provide as much information as you can regarding the current state of your computer.
If you're not sure, or if something unexpected happens, do NOT continue! Stop and ask!
In Windows Vista and Windows 7, all tools need to be started by right clicking and selecting Run as Administrator!
If I instruct you to download a specific tool in which you already have, please delete the copy that you have and re-download the tool. The reason I ask you to do this is because these tools are updated fairly regularly.
Do not do things I do not ask for, such as running a spyware scan on your computer. The one thing that you should always do, is to make sure sure that your anti-virus definitions are up-to-date!
Please do not use the Attachment feature for any log file. Do a Copy/Paste of the entire contents of the log file and submit it inside your post.
I am going to stick with you until ALL malware is gone from your system. I would appreciate it if you would do the same. From this point, we're in this together ;)
Because of this, you must reply within three days failure to reply will result in the topic being closed!
Lastly, I am no magician. I will try very hard to fix your issues, but no promises can be made. Also be aware that some infections are so severe that you might need to resort to reformatting and reinstalling your operating system.

Hello,

I hope I am not doing something wrong here violating any rules. I am new in this forum.

My programs are in the system but the links from Program Files show empty. i.e. if I open a word document Office 10 opens the file with Word but if I try to open Word from Program Files then it shows empty.

Here is a screen shot of Snagit where it shows empty but I can open it from its folder:

This is a screen shot of my Program Files window:

I had an ugly virus and all my icons and programs disappeared but I was able to recup all icons but now my problem is the above.

Thank you in advance.

Hi I have XP and my recycle bin items don't show. I redid the whole registry due to a computer virus. Now the thing still doesn't show! I thought it may have just been a corrupt file. I noticed a link someone suggested to someone else.....

http://forums.techguy.org/t98784/s.html

But it didn't work for me.
The recycle bin hid items also upon removing Norton, so that's not the problem. I did remove manually the user info so I didn't have to log in with a password everytime I start my computer but don't think that's it. It seems like Windows has a lot of problems for people who want to see recycle bin items.

I have just bought a new pc with Vista Home Premium x64. Problem is that the recycle bin won't show deleted items. The bin just looks empty. If I click on empty recycle bin it prompts me if I want to delete these 16 (or whatever number) items, so they must be there but will not display. I have tried displaying hidden files and checked in recycle bin properties that files are not deleted rather than placed in the bin to no avail. If I click restore items nothing happens. Can anyone suggest something please? Thanks

Windows 7-SP1

This is only happening on my internal data drive ( E: ), system drive ( C: ) and external drives ( F:, G & H: ) are OK.

If I delete up to 6 items in a single operation (folders, files or a mixture) the items show up in the recycle bin. But if its 36 then 30 items will not be in the recycle bin, and the 6 that are there are not the first or last 6. If its 80 items then 74 wont be in the recycle.bin etc, etc, If I delete 200 items in a single operation from the C: drive then all 200 will be in the recycle bin.

Weird. I tried creating a fresh $recycle.bin on E: (by removing it), that didn't fix it.

This drive also contains E:\RECYCLER\S-1-5-21-117609710-2025429265-682003330-1004 which I believe is the recycle bin contents. If I remove this directory will windows create a fresh one?

I ran chckdsk on the drive in mid-May no errors reported and SMART say its healthy, anyway its not a hardware issue.

A:Not all Deleted items show up in Recycle Bin

As a quick experiment you could use sike command line utility to send files to the recycle bin and see if it acts any differently. The program is free. No nags, tracking or advertisements etc. on my site.

Edit: If you run sike in a command prompt with no params it shpws a usage dialog.

I recently posted this in the Windows XP forum and they tried to help but directed me here. When I delete my files they don't go to the recycle bin, and my computer asks me if I'm sure I want to delete them. I've checked to make sure my recycle bin properties are in order and they are. Also, the first time this happened, I noticed an extra my computer icon on the destop, as well as a my network places icon that was never there before after I rebooted my computer. I immediately deleted them, but they didn't show up in the recycle bin either. The bin is just empty, and the empty recycle bin option is greyed out. I've completed the Adaware, SBSD, HJT scans and did a full virus scan with AVG. I did not use the online scan, because last time I tried on this particular computer, it crashed. Please help once more, if it's not too much trouble.

Peace,

A:Recycle bin empty, where are files?

OK, I think I know what the problem is here.

Is that the only problem you are experiencing now? We'll fix that up now.

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should not have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Download KillBox (http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe). Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

c:\recycler\desktop.ini

Make sure to close any open browsers. Run a scan in HijackThis. Check each of the following and hit 'Fix checked' (after checking them) if they still exist (make sure not to miss any):

I have had basically this same problem: Nothing I delete goes to the Recycle Bin. It remains EMPTY. I checked the settings and it is NOT set to "Remove Files Immediately when Deleted" in Properties. I have run Virus Scans and other scans with: Micro-Trends, Symantec, TDS-3, Ad-Aware, Spybot and AOL tools. No WORD documents or even game programs will go to the Recycle Bin. I sent trouble report to Microsoft Windows, but their support did not help. They had me run: "sfc /scannow". I did that, but it did nothing to resolve problem. My Recycle Bin Icon is fine, however. It is not grayed out or showing any other problems, other than it remains empty. But, my computer will often run slow when online. I have to delete cookies and files from "Internet Options" in Control Panel and then do a "Disk Cleanup". The "Compress Old Files" is usually in 100's to 1000's along with Temporary Internet files. But NOTHING in Recycle Bin. I clean up those and RESTART to use my computer again for awhile. I have a nice computer and TONS of disk space, so I don't understand why this won't resolve. For some reason when I try to empty my recycle bin it says there are three files to delete when on my screen theres nothing there even with "Show hidden files" on. Second when i go to empty the recycle bin, it says "Cannot remove folder De42: The directory is not empty"

I've reinstaled windows atleast 5 times and everytime that file is on there. Even made a new partition this time and the file(s) is still there.

If someone can please help me that would be appriciated.

A:Cannot delete files (empty) from recycle bin

Hi. Try this.

Download unlocker here and install it.

Goto "Control Panel" -> "Folder Options" -> Click "View" tab -> Select "Show Hidden Files" and deselect "Hide Protected Operating System Files" -> (Click "Yes" if a warning message comes up) -> Click "OK" -> go out of "Control Panel"

Go to "My Computer" -> "Local Disk C:\" -> Right click on "Recycler" -> click "Unlocker" -> on the "Action" select "Delete" -> then depending on the next screen either click "Unlock All" or "OK"

Hope that helps.

A few days ago I was copying some files to and from my portable drives. The progress bar sat frozen at a few instances, and I had to hit "cancel". Eventually I got my files to all copy to where I wanted them, but now I can't delete the folders and files that are still on my desktop.

I'm using a Toshiba Satellite laptop running Windows Vista Basic.

I tried to delete the folders and files, and it ran progress bars for over 12 hours that just flashed the blue bars across really fast while reading "Recycling 1 item (0 bytes)".

When I finally give up and hit "cancel", it flashes to "Recycling 24 items (251mb)" for a second as it is closing. But it just won't seem to delete these.

I also tried to empty the recycle bin, which now has 1.83gb of photo/video files to delete, but the "Calculating Time Remaining" bar just seems to flash on endlessly.

Does anyone know what's wrong with it?

Hello and welcome to TSF

Lets try this:

Click Start => All Programs => Accessories => System Tools => Disc Cleanup. Select your drive and press OK. Tick all the options then click OK, then click Yes. Just let it do its thing.

Lets hope this clears away the files.

I'm trying to do some general hard-drive cleanup, and deleting temporary files and whatnot. Regardless of how I select any group of files from any directory, or even from the recycle bin, it simply opens the delete dialogue and says it's deleting, but nothing happens. It stays there interminably. Never finishes, never deletes any files. It doesn't hang , I can cancel and stop it, but nothing has happened in the interim.
I'm stumped. I did search and follow the thread on an earlier post MSKB, but that didn't help.

Hi,

I was given two CDs of .jpgs that show as empty when inserted in my PC's CD drive. I know its not a problem with my drive, because I can easily view files on other CDs.* I also know that these two CDs are not blank, as their files can be viewed on my work Mac. I've tried a couple Mac-to-PC freeware programs, but they also do not read files on these two CDs.

* Interestingly, I burned a few .jpgs to a CD from my work Mac and this cd opens fine on my home PC.

Whenever I delete something and send it to the Recycle Bin, the icon will change to show that it's full, but when I open the Recycle Bin, it takes a while to load and when it does load, there will be nothing in it (window is just white except for the taskbars on the top and side) and the bottom-left side will just say "0 items." What's going on here and how do I fix it?

A:Deleted files don't show up in Recycle Bin

There must be a setting somewhere that deletes them without going through the recycle option. I've set all my files do that - maybe just your Firefox files do.

A couple of random suggestions.

Suggestion 1
Have you restarted your machine? If not, try this first...

Suggestion 2
Try browsing to it (this isn't a permanent fix, but if you are needing something now)
1. go to an explorer window
2. Tools> folder options
3. click the View tab
4. click show hidden files, folders, drives
5. uncheck hid protected operating system files.
6. hit ok...
7. go to the root of drive that you deleted the item off of
8. There will be a folder called $Recycle.Bin go to this
9. Then there will be some folder(s) inside, browse these.
Suggestion 3
Was this a clean install, or an upgrade? If it was an upgrade, it may possibly be an issue until you clean install.

I backed up all of my data files over to a CD/ROM before restoring my Windows 7 PC due to a hard drive failure.

After successfully restoring the Windows 7 PC, I also restored my backed up files from the CD/ROM using HP RecoveryMgr, which was included as part of the backup process. Then I see all folders show "This folder is empty", even though the folder "Properties" show that the folder is not empty and contains files being backed up during the restore.

How can I make the files in the restored folders visible/accessible again?

Thanks a lot,

Welcome to the windows 7 forum.

Have you verified that you have show hidden/system files visable?
you can do this in control panel folder options and uncheck the options for show hidden/system files.
Your restore program might be hiding the files by making them hidden or system.

Just an idea.

1) You can go open recycle bin and then empty it. It just takes one more step to accomplish it.

2) If you have ccleaner you can restore or just clean with ccleaner itself. Honestly I've not used recycle bin for over a month.

when this issue start happen? for first bet try to perform system restore using restore point

try to login using local admin PC, check if this issue also persist there
turn of antivirus and security software to check, or you can perform clean boot

try to run system file checker to fix registry issue

try to login at safe mode with networking, and check
is this issue not persist at safemode with networking, maybe 3rd party software caused this issue
is there any important data on the D drive? please backup if any. Try to reformat this drive and check
the other workaround is try to re-create user profile. Maybe you need local administrator here

Good afternoon,
Hopefully someone has experienced this and can offer advice.

A user is deleting files, but they are not appearing in the recycle bin

- user is deleting from her computer, and not a network location, or flash drive
- computer is not partitioned - only has a "C" drive
- computer is W7 32-bit
- user is not a local admin
- Use has 6 different recycle bins (right-click on RB desktop icon > properties > recycle bin location); some of the locations are "My Pictures", "My Videos" etc.... We are not able to manage the size of
these locations.
- all of the RB locations are set to "Custom Size"
- have tried:
a. deleting everything out of the RB
b. (running as admin) RD /S /Q C:\$Recycle.bin
c. set to view hidden & system files/folders, gone to "C" and deleted the $RECYCLE.BIN folder. clicked yest at all the prompts, including: Do this for all current items

** after both b & c, rebooted the computer

So far, nothing has worked. Might anyone have any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Hi
I'm helping a friend who had a malware infection, which has now apparently been eradicated. Vista Home Premium SP2 32bit. I don't know if the problems it still has are a result of the malware, or if they were preexisting on my friend's computer. But I suspect they were used by the malware to protect itself.

*The taskbar won't unlock, even temporarily (in contrast to the folder properties issue mentioned below).
*I can't show hidden files/extensions, even temporarily.
*Folder properties can't be altered permanently, e.g. the user documents folder is always displayed as "Pictures and Videos" type instead of "All Items" ; can't set to use Windows Classic folders, show full path in Title Bar, etc. These items CAN be altered temporarily, but the previous settings always revert on rebooting.)
*Context menu items such as new folder, new text document are not present.
*Deleted files do not show up in the recycle bin.
*No matter which browser (FF or MSIE) is set as default, when the default browser is reopened it always states to this effect: "This is not the default browser. Would you like to make it the default browser?"

These did not return to normal after doing a system restore to 3 weeks before the time the malware became apparent.
The system restore was done before eliminating the malware. The following were tried afterwards:
I ran Unhide (from Bleepingcomputer) several times; no effect.
I ran System File Checker several times; ... Read more

My OS of choice is Windows 2000.

Yes, you read right. I managed to turn my Program Files folder into a Recycle Bin. How did I do it, you ask? My Recycle Bin had 2 damaged files it refused to delete, so I looked around for problems like mine. I got this link ( http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;136517 ) and did what it said. However, I didn't have a recycled folder. Instead, I did a search after uncovering all hidden folders, copied the original Ini, then changed them all to read what I was told to put in a new ini file.

I did this in the Program Files folder, the System32 folder, and WinNT folder. I restarted, and found all my program icons in the tray changed to nothing. I have no back ups, and the new recycle bin reads as having all the data of the Program Files. I can't extract it, but it's there. Any idea what I should do to change it back into a file folder?

Newbie to this site...this is my first post here.

Last week, the dreaded Windows Recovery console malware found it's way onto my PC. First thing I noticed was the recovery icon and the transparent destop icons (which are now fixed). I spent a lot of time this week researching how to remove this, using Super Anti Spyware, Malbytes, Combo fix...Looks like the malware is gone, but here's the thing. The start up program files menu shows all programs from my C:\drive as empty folders - programs on other drive show up as normal and can be accessed. Once the Malware appeared to be gone, I did a restore point, first I went back about a week, the program files were still empty...then I went back to April 1, 2011 and they were still empty. I read that this malware somehow deletes shortcuts, but I have several programs that I cannot access (zune software, itunes etc). I tried using unhide.exe and althought it fixed the transparent desktop icons, the program file problem is not resolved. Also, my windows installer wasn't accessible (I repaired that), but when I went to reload itunes twice, to C:\drive, the program loaded, but desktop icon does not appear. When I access the program folder, there's no .EXE files. Oddly enough, when I d/l utility programs to help fix the malware problem they appear on my desktop. I run Kapersky, Iobit360 and tried using some other utility tools that I wound up uninstalling.

Any recommendations would be great!

Greetings group.
I have a 2 month old hard drive that failed on my desktop PC, taking My Documents with 7 years worth of data. I had just moved the folder to the new drive and hadn't gotten a chance to backup yet.
I'm trying to check Recycle bins on my External hard drives to see if I ever had even a partial Documents folder on one of them..
Problem: All 3 of my external hard drives have multiple recycle bins. All of the recycle bins show the same content as my local C Drive on my laptop. I am attaching 2 screenshots for your review. One shot is of the recycle bins on external drive, the other shot is a screenshot of the recycle bins on my C drive on laptop.
I'm logged in as Administrator because my normal login cannot access any of these recycle bins. And my normal login is in the Admin group. Using Windows Explorer as Administrator, I'm unable to see the Recycle bins. I can see them with my regular login. Very odd.

I'm so desperate for help. Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks for any help.

There are a lot of post here and elsewhere of people who want to show previews of PDFs and images rather than the generic program icons of the viewer programs. There are a lot of posts of people who don't want to show the previews and only want to show the program icons.

I want to know if there's some way I can choose which extensions show previews, say only JPG and GIF files, while leaving other files, like PDFs showing the generic program icon.

I know the File View options setting (Always show icons, never thumbnails), but that's an all or nothing option. I want to choose which extensions show thumbnails. (Specifically, just want generic PDF icon for those files, rather than first page preview, but want the previews for photos.) Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I have already checked if the auto delete option is on, and it is not. Does anyone know what is going wrong or how i would go about repairing this? I have run a microsoft antispyware beta on the computer as well as webroot spysweeper and neither will fix the problems. Here is the Hyjack this log:

A:Recycle Bin Will not empty

Hello, and welcome to TSF!

Please print out or copy this page to Notepad. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes. You should 'not' have any open browsers when you are following the procedures below.

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' (or 'Show all files') is enabled. Also make sure that 'Display the contents of system folders' is checked. If you have Windows XP, the search feature is a little different. When you click on 'All files and folders' on the left pane, click on the 'More advanced options' at the bottom. Make sure that 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders', and 'Search subfolders' are checked.

For the options that you checked/enabled earlier, you may uncheck them after your log is clean. If we ask you to fix a program that you use or want to keep, please post back saying that (we don't know every program that exists, so we may tell you to delete a program that we think is bad to keep).

===============

Now, let's open a command prompt and unregister the dll(s) we're going to remove, by entering the following:

regsvr32 /u sdmexhavqq.dll

It's ok, if these aren't found or 'error' out. If you want, just copy and paste the individual lines to the command prompt to save on the typing.

I have an external HDD that when I run a print directory of it I end up with 300 lines of misc. previously deleted items that are still appearing with names (no actual files or size but 300 plus folders and files of no size all named anything that's been deleted off the drive). I have tried emptying my recycling bin on the desktop, I've tried running ccleaners method of cleaning the free space and emptying recycling bin on the external hdd and also enabled viewing of system protected files to try and manually delete the files. Can someone please help me figure out how to clear those out of my recycling bin so they will stop appearing in my print directory?

A:How to empty E:\$RECYCLE.BIN

Well, I know you can decrease the size of the recycle bin on that drive, or even turn it off. that should empty it. Right click on Recycle Bin on desktop and choose Properties. Click on the bin for your E: drive and either change size, or choose Don't move files to the recycle bin...

The Recycle Bin in your 2nd Drive is a hidden folder. Click on Tools> Folder options> View> Show all files and folders

Also have to click show protected operating system files to see the recycler folder.

Help!My problem shows up when I try and empty my recycle bin by right-clicking on it and selecting "Empty Recycle Bin". Each time I try, I get the same error from Windoze: Cannot remove folder Dc21: Access is deniedYet there is no folder Dc21 in the recycle bin. There did used to be one, but it's long gone...And I can manually delete everything that's showing in the recycle bin.A user on another forum (soft32) suggested it might be malware infection, and recommended this site, so I have come here in the hope that one of you kind folk could help me work out if there is a rootkit on my system.Yesterday evening I removed some old software packages from my PC (eg ABBYY, WinZip) and after that had a few problems, particularly Windows Explorer crashing, and then that funny message when trying to empty the recycle bin. So I ran CheckDisk which found no errors, and AVG (Free) which came up 100% clean...Then today I tried to empty the recycle bin again and got the access denied message.I really hope someone here can help me.My DDS is below, and other files attached as per the (very clear) instructions. I couldn't get the GMER log though as it ran overnight and failed with a delayed write error and my computer was effectively hung. I'll disable "HDD Health" and re-run it, perhaps there was some conflict there? But in the meantime I thought I'd post what I'd got so far.Best wishes,DavidDDS (Ver_09-12-01.01) - NTFSx86 Run by IBM USER at 17:... A:Recycle Bin - bug - cannot empty

Hello Flav,

Are you not able to actually empty (permanently delete files) the Recycle Bin, or is this just an issue with it's icon?

If you are unable to delete the files in Recycle Bin, then the tutorial below may be able to help with that.

when i visit my recycle bin it is always empty ,even after i have just deleted items.
somtimes i want to restore an item but it's not there where are they going.
can anyone tell me please.

A:empty recycle bin

when you delete an item how are you doing it, do you right click then select delete?
or are you using a key shortcut.
the key shortcut deletes without putting the item in the bin. also your bin size may have something to do with it, as if the items are too large they will be deleted without being stored in the bin, although you generally see a pop up regarding that.
may be worth checking the size of the bin
