Is it possible to upgrade my CPU and RAM on my T440p?

Preferred Solution: T440p CPU and RAM upgrade

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Welcome to the forum!

Yes, you can upgrade both. Max RAM is 16GB (2x 8GB), and you could install any CPU from the below list:

i5-4210M
i5-4300M
i5-4330M
i7-4600M
i7-4700MQ
i7-4710MQ
i7-4800MQ
i7-4900MQ

I'm only listing few models for the sake of keeping the list short. Basically any Haswell CPU should work.

To do this upgrades you need Lenovo's Hardware Maintenance Manual, which you can download from here: click me!

Welcome to the forum!

That should be no problem, this mod has been reportedly done by many forum members. Is plug&play.

You will need to have a good thermal paste though, and clean the old one from the heastink.

The problem predicted by me can be related with the number of lanes (1 or 2). I don't know if cable on my machine has 2 lanes. How can I check it? 2:can you provide FRU for cable with 2 lanes?

Hello everyone, I need to ask you a question about ram voltage of a t440p. It came with 4gb, and wanted to change one slot to a bigger memory module.Techincal data say this laptop uses ONLY DDR3L (1.35v) because of the Intel i5-4300 (which also states this in its tech sheet). My question arised when I opened the backplate and found there are already 2x2gb modules of DDR3 (1.5v) working in it. When searching for data sheets of the rams, both work only at 1.5v.What's happening? I really don't underestand if they are running in a lowered voltage state, or why they are working at all. Here's one of the modulesThank you in advance

A:[QUESTION] t440p RAM upgrade

Is this a second hand T440p? (I don't recall Lenovo installing Kingston Value RAM modules in ThinkPads...)

Basically there is nothing you should worry about, a T440p can use both 1.35v and 1.5v RAM if I remember correctly. And 1.5v RAM can also run at 1.35v.

If you plan to upgrade your RAM I would remove those modules (they're Kingston's cheap RAM line) and install 2x 4GB or 2x 8GB (the latter is the max RAM supported by this model).

Anyways...) Two questions:- what upgrades could I do? I am in doubt, as cpu-reviews only give it a 10-25% speed advantage (and for multicore even less). Or are there real improvement options around? ThxTuur

I have recently sourced a known-working i7 4800MQ processor to replace the i7 4600M in my 440p. The system is on the latest BIOS according to the Windows 10 update tool and I am already using the 20v 4.5A (90W) power brick. Swapping the processor, appling thermal compound and attaching the fan unit it simply won't power on with the new CPU - pressing the power button just flashes the power LED 3 times in succession (it never stays on to indicate the battery is charging) - no fans, no LCD, no beeps. Exchanging the processor back for the original 4600M it fires straight into life again. I've tried resetting the CMOS by leaving the coin cell unplugged for 30 minutes or more, static discharge by holding down the power button with everything disconnected. All of the normal tricks I can think of - nothing makes any difference.  I found one other case where a CPU upgrade caused the same symptoms: https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/4iv5sn/t440p_cpu_upgrade_woes/  but not many people seem to have had problems using the faster processors from the qualified hardware list. Is there something I am missing here? John

There is no error code nor a prompt for ThinkPad setup. When a swap the old processor back, I am able to boot. I've talked to a few places and they have stated that it may be due to an incompatible socket type.  I looked at Intel's site and it states that the FCPGA946 is a supported socket type - http://ark.intel.com/products/75131/Intel-Core-i7-4900MQ-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-3_80-GHz I looked at CPU World' site and it states that the rPGA946b is the supported socket type - http://www.cpu-world.com/sspec/SR/SR15K.html The FCPGA946 socket seems to be compatible with my rPGA947 socket since they are both G3.  Wiki says "Socket G3, also known as rPGA 946B/947 or FCPGA 946, is a socket for Intel microprocessors that supports Haswell-based mobile CPUs."Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_Socket_G3 I have read that the "rPGA947 has one extra pin hole, but otherwise it is similar to the rPGA946. Hi,I recently purchased a used T440p, more specifically a model 20AW-S0RK03. Unfortuntatly it arrived damaged and, naive as I was, I accepted a small partial refund and figured it wouldn't be too much on an issue to replace it...However, it seems that this part is rather difficult to obtain and furthermore I now realize that the palmrest for the T440p exists with several different internal designs (number/placement of screw holes etc.).If possible I would much prefer not having to disassemble it twice - once to figure out the part number and once again when the part arrives - so if anyone can inform me what part number I need for my specific model (20AW-S0RK03), then that would be a huge help.Any tips on where to buy (if allowed) will also be greatly appreciated. Note that I'm a student, so both cost and delivery time (I'm in Europe) needs to be considered. Thanks in advance. I really hope that someone can assist me with this tiresome situation.Rasmus

Before I buy and install an M.2 card, I wanted to ask just what do I need to know or do before and after the installation. The installation itself is basically simple but I'm not real sure how to set it up or what it can be used for? Do I really need it? I've read several articles about this and found more confusion. Some claim to use it as a boot drive for storing Windows, while others claim it is only good for existing drive cache. I'm wondering if adding the M.2 will even be of any use or improvement to me. Does anyone know anything about this? Please keep it like me, very simple. I'm not even sure which one to get for my T440p. So I got myself a T440p and upgraded the i5 to a quad-core i7, also got a new charger (it requires a 135W for quadcore+Nvidia). For some reason it constantly throttles the CPU down when under load to the highest non-turbo multiplier. For example, when running Prime95 with the multiplier maxed out (ThrottleStop) on both the T440p and the T530 I've been using, on the T530 it stably stays on 35 and on the T440p it goes down to 27 while running. 3740QM vs. 4800MQ, both are 2.7-3.7GHz chips, OS is the same (W7Prox64) So far I've tried the following:setting stuff in Windows power management (minimum CPU states to 100%, high performance profile etc.)using ThrottleStop and setting the multiplier to maximumgetting the newest driversenabling everything enable-able in bios.I have no further ideas on how to squeeze the turbo out of it and I just need that, longer rendering means slower work, and that speed decrease adds up to hours and hours after a while when you do work day by day. And anyway I paid for a product they said can do this performance so I think that's enough explaining in itself.I'm feeling I've been missing some really obvious setting to get that speed, where that might be?

When I power on my T440p it gives me the black screen with THINKPAD in large letters, then goes straight to some Windows Start-Up Repair screen. After a while I get an error saying "Windows cannot repair this computer automatically" and I select the "View advanced options for system recovery and repair". I select "System recovery options" however this is an old computer from my work that still has Windows 7 Enterprise and I do not know the Admin password (I have tried all the typical default passwords to no avail). I was able to reach a Lenovo Diagnostics page and ran a Storage Test(?), see attached screenshot with failures and result code. SEAGATE ST500LM021-1KJ152 Smart short self-test: FAILEDDrive self-test: FAILEDTargeted read test: FAILED Resulit code: UHD016016-UM7WWJ Can someone please help me? Does this mean that I need a new hard drive? Do I have ANY options for getting into this computer in its current state? I am at a loss for what to do next.

Hello Lenovo Community, I got my T440p three years ago. Now it cannot power up at all. I did the following test. 1. Removed the memory modules, removed hard disk, removed optical driver.2. plug the external battery and AC adapter.3. The red LED on the A side, the dot on "i" of "ThinkPad" will blink three time. I can tell the laptop is intial powered per the manual.4. Press the power butoon, nothing displayed, the light on the power button is off, no fan running, no beep.5. Disconnect the coil-battery of BIOS, and re-connect after about 10 seconds.6. plug the external battery and AC adapter.7. The red LED on the A side blink 3 times. Press the power button. I heard 5 short beeps. The fan is running. That means the power button is still functional.8. Unplug the AC adapter and external battery (because i donot know how to stop the fan)9. Plug the AC adapter and external battery back and press the power button10. no beep, no fan running, no sound, no display.11. the output voltage of the AC adapter is 20.6VDC. the voltage of the coil-battery is 3.06VDC. both are good per the manual. I guess something going wrong on the main board, maybe the BIOS, the CPU... Any reply from you is very appreciate.

Repeat the above step, but leave the CMOS battery disconnected for at least 20 mins...

You will need RAM to boot, if you have two RAM modules installed try booting with only one, alternating the RAM slots.

If it still doesn't work, also disconnect the wlan and wwan cards, the touchpad and try again with one RAM at a time.

Let us know how it goes...

Hello forum,  my goal is to find the best possible M2 SSD for a T440p TinkPad to use it as a system disc (OS and apps). I am going to run Win10 and Linux Mint on it.  From what I have researched, the T440p can only hold 2242 cards in the WWAN slot.  I am not sure about the next points.  - Is there a limitation concerning max. capacity for a M2 SSD for a T440p? (max. 256GB?) - Which interface does the T440p support? (SATA III, PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.3) - Are there other limitations I have to consider before buying a SSD for a T440p?   Can you please share your thoughts?  Thank you and best regards

Hi, I've lost one screw from the bottom of my T440p. I'd like to buy a replacement, but I don't know the exact specifications of the screw.I found this manual.  The missing screw is the 1c screw on page 77, but the manual is wrong as it says they are M2 x 3 mm screws, but those are definitely longer than 3 mm in my T440p. I'm not sure about their exact length though. The manual I found on Lenovo website doesn't even mention the screws' specs. Can you please tell me the specifications of that particular screw?Where would you buy it?Thank you very much in advance.

First of all greetings to all of you on this forum! This is my very first topic in here and, quite frankly, might be one of the only threads I'll ever make, that's because I'm on an impasse where I need some advice before doing anything that might mess things up. Anyway! Back to the situation at hand. While working earlier this week I accidently spilled coffee all over my computer (thanks body for having a sudden urge to sneeze just when I was taking a sip of it). Presently I shut my computer down, removed the keyboard and dried everything that I could below the keyboard/"fluid-shield" and squeezed some paper towel below it keys as well. After all that I hooked everything back together and turned the computer on to check for failures and unfortunately one little key wasn't working: my dear little left key. Luckly it wasn't a letter key and I could carry on with my work for up until I had some time to try to resurrect it (which is today). I have to mention that my warrant expired an year ago and I do have some experience working with electronics, so it wouldn't hurt to disassemble the keyboard itself and check for coffee-blockage in the circuitry, which I suspect it is the case because otherwise I'd expect a whole array of keys to go bad all at once. The thing is, after removing the board from the computer I can't remove the plastic back (the one that slides and hides the screws) save for the lateral plastic clamps. Digging the web for a solution didn't... Read more

Just started in the last week, when powered on, the unit powers on/of anywhere from 2-5 times before finally staying up and running normally.I tried this fix: removed battery and AC line, hit power button 10 times at 1 second intervals, held power button for 30 seconds...but no luck. The unit is ~ 2.5 years old and had the 9v battery. Thanks for any help!

Hi, I have a T440p thinkpad with a docking station. I am able to display 2 monitors fine (HP L2245wg). I have recently acquired a 3rd monitor (Dell P2214H) and would like to set it up. I have the DVI and VGA in the HP monitors and an SD port cable in the new monitor. However, when all 3 are plugged in, the DVI HP monitor fails to display anything. I went into the display settings on my laptop and it is reading the monitor is connected but not displaying anything. Am I missing a driver? Or are these monitors/laptops just not capable of displaying 3 monitors? If you could let me know I would very much appreciate it. Thanks
