Q: Internet wont work, but does if i plug in cable

so a couple of weeks ago my internet stopped working wirelessly, after restarting, and doing everything i could thing of i plugged it in to the router and it decided to work but the wireless still wont.

its like my network card isnt even there, everyone else in the house can connect fine, but nothing is showing up for me. i downloaded xirrus wifi inspecter, but that couldnt even detect a card. nore can the device manager.

Can anyone help me fix this, i hate sitting on the kitchen benchtop to do my browsing

Preferred Solution: Internet wont work, but does if i plug in cable

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Internet wont work, but does if i plug in cable

the xirrus cannot find the adapter

make and exact model of the pc

lets see a device manager screen shot
Device Manager
Post back the results in device manager
You will now need to take a screen shot and copy that back to the working PC.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the screen shot and attach the screen shot in a reply on the forum here.

how to access device manager for different windows versions

Hold the Windows key and press Pause key, should open to allow device manager to be seen

on a laptop you may need to use Hold the Windows key and press FN key + the pause key

if this does not work then -

Windows 7 or Vista
Click on the Start Orb
In the Start Search box type
device manager and then press enter

Start > control Panel {Vista set to classic view}> system > {Vista, device manager on left hand side} {XP hardware Tab, device manager button} >
windows 7
start > control panel> System and Security> Device Manager
network adaptors, click on the + > post back the devices listed there
are there any ! ? or X
post a screen shot of the device manager - network adapters

To post a screen shot of the active window.
1) hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
2) if you are using Vista/Windows 7 you can use the "snipping tool" which is found in Start> All programs> Accessories> Snipping Tool

To upload the screen shot to the forum, open the full reply window ("Go Advanced" button) and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

Hello guys and gals,
The internet will not work on a computer and I am think that it is a driver problem but I have had a brain fart. Where should I go? Thanks

A:Cable internet wont work

Device Manager to see if driver is installed or to uninstall one.

The Driver CD that came with the computer or the internet (with another computer) to find a driver.

Is either of those what you meant by "Where should I go?"?

I do not understand what you mean. Is it a 3.5mm jack mic or a USB mic?

Are you plugging in the mic into the front jack input on your machine or the back? Is it a laptop or a tower?

Also what is your machine make and model?

I'm trying to set up my modem/router on a different cable outlet, and on the original one, we're using a modem that does our phone as well, I'm trying to set up a normal modem in another outlet, but when I set it up, all I get is "Limited Connectivity," I've tried with ethernet and wireless. I use that outlet for cable TV, is that same outlet not compatible with Internet?

I really need some help with this, I don't know anything about networking..

So any help would be appreciated, thanks!

I finally crimped the ends and went to test it and it doesn't work. I made sure that the wires went into the connectors correctly. I cant figure out what is wrong! Any ideas?? Thanks in advance!

Hey all.

I can't track down the exact thing that changed, but many of my internet plug-ins (QuickTime, Silverlight, Air) won't work properly. I will install the plug-in, then when I go to a site that requires it, it says it's not installed, despite clearly being the Program registry.

When I use QuickTime, I can go to various sites that have QT movies and they load fine, but if I go to Apple.com, it says I need to grab the newest QuickTime.

Silverlight apps won't load at all.

Any time I go to Adobe's marketplace for AIR apps, despite having one running, it says that I need to install Air.

This is in both IE7 and Firefox.

A:Solved: wireless router wont work with cable modem

This may be a simple case that you forgot to power cycle (unplug for 30 seconds) the modem when switching devices. Otherwise, ...

Reset the router to factory default settings.
Unplug modem and router and shut down computer(s).
Connect modem to router's WAN (Internet, Modem) port.
Connect computer(s) to router LAN port(s).
Plug in modem.
Plug in router.
Boot computer(s).

This should get you internet access on the connected computer(s). If not, please show for a Windows PC ...

Start, Run, CMD, OK to open a command prompt:
(For Vista or 7 type CMD in the Search box after Start)

Type the following command:

[Note that there is no space between the slash and ALL.]

Right click in the command window and choose Select All, then hit Enter.
Paste the results in a message here.

If necessary use a text file and removable media to copy the results to a computer with internet access.

MB is Asus P5QC
So is it dead?

A:Plug in GTX 260, hooked up one 6 pin power plug, motherboard wont post

Did you read the GTX 260 manual to see if it has to have the two connectors on?
This is an old MB, so it has a story. Tell us how did you get it and what memory, GPU etc it has before.
With no memory it won't boot. Do you have a speaker connected to the MB so you can hear the beeps when you turn it on?
Witch power supply you have? GTX 260 requires 500W as minimum.

Hi there, my mother went to work a few days ago and came home to find that her computer had restarted itself and is now displaying a "Plug an Ethernet cable into this computer"/"A network cable is not properly plugged in or may be broken" error message in Windows Network Diagnostics. She's running Windows 7 on a Gateway ZX4971 and we use a NETGEAR n450 for WiFi.

My Macbook and both of our phones can still connect to our WiFi perfectly fine, it's just her desktop having the issue.

I ran Start>Run>cmd>ipconfig /all and this is what came up:

I've restarted our NETGEAR n450, unplugged it completely from power and plugged it back in, and restarted her computer but nothing has worked. I ran a Malwarebytes scan and removed some bad files but that didn't solve anything either.

I've done this and everything checks out fine:
Check Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. The DHCP Client service should be Started and its Startup Type should be Automatic.

Also, I've run DriverUpdate from Slimware Utilities, Inc. but the scan reports that "Your system has the latest stable drivers and updates installed."

A:No Internet Connection/"Plug in an Ethernet cable" message after random restart.

Easiest solution - try a different ethernet cable. Yes they do go bad.

Next attempt, move the cable from the slot it is in, in the router, to a different slot. Yes, those slots also can go bad.

Harder, it is possible the NIC (ethernet card has died). In that case, you'd see what empty slots the computer has, buy a card, install it and plug into that.

I just had a poster on another forum who bought a new card for $15 and his computer which wasn't connecting, is now working fine.

My internet connection has been working just fine on BOTH computers. Recently, JUST THE HP will not connect to the internet saying "plug a cable into the network adapter local area connection". I have tried various repairs to diagnose where the issue is occurring and think it might be something to do with an HP update that may have messed something up or a driver issue?!?! Hi, great site/idea.

I'm having a strange issue regarding internet.
Moved country...Ireland to Australia.
PC had never caused any issues before and was connected to net via a wireless adapter.
Moved to Australia, set up PC, everything seems fine apart from not being able to connect to Internet.

Wireless - when I plug wireless adapter into usb port, toolbar displays Monitor with red x, so i double click and to view network list but my network isn't available....but my neighbors one shows up.....even though according to the status of wireless network connections adaptor is "Not connected"??????but my network is a very strong signal and am actually using it right now on my notebook to send this mail....so adaptor's sees asnother network but not my network which is 1 metre away?????

Ethernet Cable - Plug in cable but nothing happens, no change on toolbar, nothing in Network Connections.
Tried internet with but doesn't work....stumped.

Am I making a simple schoolboy error here?

Checked Device Manager and there is a yellow question mark at Other Devices, opened that and inside yellow question mark and exclamation mark over "other PCI Bridge" and "Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

Any advise, cant update any drivers as I cant get PC online obviously.

Thanks in advance.

Connect an Ethernet cable from the laptop to your router. Or connect the laptop's wireless network adapter to your wireless network. If you don't have router, power off the laptop and the broadband modem. Then connect an Ethernet cable from the laptop to the modem, and power on first the modem making sure that all lights come on. Then turn on the laptop.

I have a problem. We have one cable internet account with Time Warner. I want to have two modems--one connected in the game room for the kids to use and one connected in the home office to the two computers in the home office.

A wireless connection from the game room to the office doesn't appear to be workable since the computers aren't set up for wireless. I'd just like to add another modem connection to the cable outlet in the office instead of having to move the whole thing between the two rooms every time someone needs to use it. You can imagine the wailing when there are competing needs.

Time Warner says this won't work because the modems have specific ids that identify them and make them work. They day I'd have to set up wireless or buy another cable account.

So my question is: Is it possible to program the same id into both modems if I buy another one. Or any other suggestions that will solve the problem.

Thanks in advance for the help I know will come from you guys.

Well I just got a new ISP and I couldn't get my laptop to pick up the internet so I disabled my firewall (zone alarm) and forgot to put it back up so I left it off for about 6 hours. About 5 days later (today) i decide to run all my scanners to make sure everything is alright. When I ran adware se, it found a dialer and so i hit next and quantined it. I google up dialers to find what they are, and its talking about how they dial these expensive phone numbers and run up your bills. I found they only work on dial up connections or if your broadband has this the sites says "the connection has an ISDN adapter or additional analog modem is installed, the dialer might still be able to get a connection."

I don't have an router and Iam not on a network. I do have a cable modem (motorola) and a software firewall (zone alarm) on my computer. I scanned with Spybot search and destroy and zone alarm's pro spyware scanner and found nothing. But adware se found a dialer.

My question is could this dialer have called phone numbers on my computer? I do not have my computer hooked up with a phone cord, nor do I have Dial up internet, I have Cable. What is this ISDN adapter or additional analog modem, DO I have one on my computer?

Please let me know all is good and im just jumping the gun. I really appreciate all your help and I searched and read all the stickys.

hello ! Recently my uncle redid my other laptop to its original, out-of-the-box state due to slowness. Afterwards, when my father plugged in the ethernet cable of Motorola's SBV5120 SURFboard Cable Modem (we use the optimum service) into the computer, the computer icon at the bottom right of the screen indicated that the network was unidentified and has only local connections---therefore no internet. On the laptop I'm on right now, the network is correctly recognized and has both local AND internet connections.
Why is that ?
I concluded that since the other laptop is "redone" then I must reinstall the installation cd of the modem... and I did, today.
All went well in the installation process until the near end where the cd automatically checked to see how the connection was (btw the comp and modem). It resulted with an error stating something like that invalid or something (I forgot).
Thus, my installation attempts of the modem on the other laptop failed.
I tried to reboot both the comp and modem but still failed.
I don't understand. Why is there limited connectivity?
I don't even have perfect wireless connectivity. I mean, both of my laptops have the wireless capability and I can go around the house with the working one and find linkys with one bar of signal. But I don't have the wireless modem or something that gives stable wireless connectivity to either of them---only the motorola modem that gives internet to only 1 of the 2 right no... Read more

A:P L E A S E H E L P ! internet does not work even when I connect the ethernet cable

You want to first establish a connection from the laptop to the Motorola modem, with the Linksys router out of the loop. Is the laptop running Windows Vista or XP? When you go to Network Connections or Network and Sharing Center, do you see a LAN?

If you are connecting via an ethernet cord to a cable modem, then you would not need to install any modem. The disk you have for your Motorola modem may be for installing USB drivers in case you were using a USB cable.

A:My internet will only work through ethernet cable not wireless

There may be an issue on the ISP side or router side since restoring to defaults didnt help. Or it could be an issue with the network adapter. Or it could be an issue with the firewall.

Try downloading running these tools (download via ethernet, run on wireless): Network Fix-It Tool (right click on the internet bars on the task bar in the bottom right hand side of the screen, and click "troubleshoot network...") and Firewall Fix-It Tool.

Did you install anything on your PC before this happened? Did Windows install any updates?

Try disabling your AntiVirus. That may be the issue. I doubt it though.

Tell me if any of these solutions help.

The DNS settings you have appear to be for Virgin Media in UK

who is your ISP

can we see an ipconfig /all when you are connected by cable and working please

you may want to check you DNS settings and see if changing those to use google open DNS resolves the issue

Google public DNS
Note using google public DNS servers from outside the US may actually slow performace - so use the following as a test to identify DNS issues - if these resolve the issues , then we need to investigate further to optimise the use of DNS
Google public DNS

Theres also a link on how to setup those DNS IP address up on a PC

Then once you have set up those DNS entries

Flush & register DNS

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box (A new dialogue box - black with white font, will appear on screen ):
In the command prompt window that opens, type the following commands:

If you receive the message

A:Internet programs wont work even thoe internet is connected

I'm not sure if this will work but it does for my laptop. Restart the other computer which is the main source. Then go into one of the accounts on that computer and check that the internet is working.
Disconnect from the network on your new computer and then connect again.
If this doesn't work, make sure all the plugs are in your router and correctly plugged in. Turn the modem off and then on again.
I'm not sure what to do about the firewall settings but make sure that they allow access and that you haven't blocked it. Also try and repair the connection through msn when you try and log in. A warning will come up and click 'troubleshoot'. Then see what is wrong. Click 'repair' and see if that fixes it.

I hope this helps

Now I have never had Norton and clicked no. Upon clicking no, my internet crashed and everytime I try to get it up again, it says it can't connect. When I check my modem, it says the signal gets to the modem and that's it. I know most of you are saying, its probably not compatible, but it was running just fine up to the point that Norton came up. I ran anti virus, anti malware removers and nothing has worked. The modem is not faulty as I have another computer running Windows XP Home Premium SP 1, and it connects to the internet on it. I have even tried using command prompt to identify it, but nothing. How can a computer I used for nearly one year on the same modem, just crash like that and not work again? Can someone help me please?

Have you run Malwarebytes Anti-malware program, because it does sound like you got infected. Download the Anti-Malware on the XP pc and save it to a jump drive, boot the desktop running Vista and run the Anti-malware program. If it finds something, go to the main forum page here on this site and following the directions for being infected there.

A:My internet wont work !

Does it work at all?
you don't need the original disk for the drivers,
downloading this
re-install the driver for the Wifi adapter, then try redoing the steps to connect to the network.

Ive had a virus and though that i got rid of it, but just about a week after removing it using avast, i cant use the internet anymore. Everytime i open up the internet explorer it gives me an error message saying "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and when i try to go to a different site like google it changes the address to http:/// and gives me an error saying that "The address is not valid". Ive already tried to fix the internet connection, but that doesnt work, and all other computers connected to the router work just fine. Also all programs trying to update anything cant do so because they cant connect to the internet. I had to get HJT on another computer and put it on a stick, run it on the infected computer, put the HJT log back on the stick and now send it from the working computer just because the internet doesnt work. Someone please help me because im staring to get really mad and i feel really helpless. Here is my HJT log:

I formatted and now it wont pick up on my internet the network card is old so it should just pick up on it with no problems and no driver installation but ever since i installed windows xp sp3 it will not pick up on it any clues?

Bios: PheonixBios 4.0 Release 6.0
Processor: Intel Pentium 2 398 MHZ
Video: Nvidia RIVA TNT2/TNT2PRO
WINDOWS: XP, Service Pack 3

A:Internet wont work

Hi there,

Just because the card is old does not mean that the drivers are included in Windows. Windows includes the most common, not the oldest. i'd recomment checking the model number on the card and searching Google or DriverGuide for the right driver. If you post the model number, i can find it for you if you need.

Hope this helps.

Hi, currently im using windows xp home edition. My router is a netgear DG834gt. I'm also using avast antivirus, zone alarm firewall and spywaredoctor which monitors the background, not sure if this might explain it -_-.

The problem only occurs when i update my windows. I would be able to access the internet for a few minutes before it disconnects, if i click repair it says it's connected, however after a while (varies from few minutes to few hours) it disconnects again. My brothers internet also goes a bit strange when he updates the windows update. So can someone help please? thanks =)

Since you guys call accessing someone's open/unsecure connection theft.. I tried this the legal way. Took my laptop to starbucks where they have free access point. My laptop connected to it with no problem, but internet still wont work. When I check status of the connection I see that it sends packates but none are recieved. So basically when I open the IE it just gives me the DNS cannot find network error with the default error page.

This is probably very simple, but I can't figure it out. Iam building a system around a new Intel D955XBK motherboard, which has the integrated audio, and I cannot determine where to plug the little audio cable that connects to the CD-ROM drive. In my old system there was a port on the audio card for it.

you need drivers , for the devices with a yellow ! - possibly the chipset
its possible the hardware is damaged , because of the water issue

however, post back the exact sony model and windows version and can look for drivers - should be on the sony support site

My internet wont work, ive tried using both crome and IE but both browsers say that I am not connected to the internet despite the fact my computer says that I am connected to the internet. I know its not a network problem because my other devices are connecting fine. Also I tried connecting to the wifi at home and at school and it still does not work. My laptop is a HP ProBook 6390b and I am using windows 7. This problem started occurring after about 4 months disuse of my laptop which I think might be a factor as to why its not working. I have run windows updater and run a scan with my antivirus but still nothing helps. Thank you for any assistance in advance.
