alternative email client to Outlook (NOT WEB BASED) please

Q: alternative email client to Outlook (NOT WEB BASED) please

Hi there

I'm trying to look for an alternative robust email client to outlook -- want to start gradually moving away from Ms Office to cheaper solutions.

I don't like the way Ms is going with subscription based Office 365 and Office 2013 is IMO "The Pits" - office 2010 works fine but I want where possible to start using alternatives. Libre Office is fine for some things but not quite ready for prime time yet (IMO) especially for EXCEL but I can start moving away from office gradually with an email client first.

The email client must NOT be web or browser based (I Hate webmail type of things) and must support IMAP. I don't want it to have ADWARE or NAGWARE (you know those that keep persuading you "Please update to PRO version etc etc"). It must also support MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS. It should ideally have a similar or identical interface to OUTLOOK -- simple plain, not like the background I've seen on some Gamers machines !!!!

If it can integrate with GMAIL that's fine but not mandatory. Preferably free too .

I did see a portable client ISCRIBE at i.Scribe and InScribe: A Small and Easy to use Email Client but it looks as if it might be a little experimental.

I discarded OPERAMAIL -- don't want any BROWSER or web mail type of stuff.

Linux has some decent choices such as EVOLUTION (probably one of the best if not the best) but Windows seems a bit lacking in this area -- pity OUTLOOK EXPRESS wasn't continued after XP -- it was small, simple and could also manage multiple accounts.

Preferred Solution: alternative email client to Outlook (NOT WEB BASED) please

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

From my previous post in Need a good email client :
Mozilla Thunderbird. You might be put off by claims about its future (no more development) but it will still be supported for a long time (stability/security fixes still going on). Zimbra Desktop Incredimail Pegasus Mail Opera Mail eM Client Windows Live Mail / Windows 8 Mail App
When have you tried opera mail last ? It should be separate from the browser today (it still uses the old presto engine while the browser uses the chrome one), check here : Opera Desktop Team - Opera Mail

Thunderbird, and Zimbra are all good choices and should fit your requirements. eM Client is very nice but it supports only 2 mail accounts on free version. Pegasus Mail is quite good but the UI is old now and it doesn't feel like outlook. Incredimail has promotional tag lines in your outgoing email and some ads show up.

Not included in this list is Claws Mail - the email client that bites!, since I never tried it. It seems to be OK, it's open source and works on both linux and windows, the interface looks a bit like outlook express, and it supports multiple accounts and IMAP. It might be what you're looking for.

Hi folks,

Wondered if anybody could recommend an email client which can import Hotmail/Windows Live Mail accounts. I have been using Mozilla Thunderbird as an alternative to OutLook and really like it, but it doesn't support Hotmail. If anybody knows of something similar which does, I would appreciate it.

A:Alternative email client?

There are third party utilities you can install to get your Hotmail into just about any email client. I just can't remember the names of them offhand. Not sure about Windows Live.

Did you load the Webmail extensions for Thunderbird to get your hotmail.

I know once mail is uploaded to Outlook dot com servers or outlook dot com it remains secure.

Does it remain secure after outlook dot com sends the email or is it wide open? I hope you can understanding what I am asking.

I have been using Outlook for my Roadrunner email account for quite some time. Recently I purchased a newer version of Microsoft Office 2010 Home and Student edition, which does not have Outlook included. If I install the newer version of Microsoft Office, will it remove my Outlook program? If so, I need to know how to export all of my contacts and email folders from Outlook to a web based service like Time Warner Cable (Roadrunner). I skimmed over their website but could not find a way to do this. If I can't do that, are there any other applications similar to Outlook that will handle my contacts, calendar and email? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have seen posts similar to my requests but have been unable to put together a code to do everything I need it to do as I am very new to VBA coding.

I am looking for a VBA code that will generate an email when the date in a cell of a column is 7 days or less from the current date. The email will be sent to a recipient listed in another cell column and cc my coworker. I also need a code to change the data in another cell to "Approve, Email Sent" when the same cell date is between 7 and 1 days from the current date and "Expired, Email Sent" when the date equals the current date so that an email will only send if this cell does not equal "Approved, Email Sent" or "Expired, Email Sent" so that emails are not repeatedly sent every time the spreadsheet is opened. I plan on running task scheduler to open the spreadsheet every Monday so the code will run weekly at minimum.

Any help is greatly appreciated, thank you!

I work for a company that reports to many other companies, and they ALL have their own rules about where to send emails, what the RE line should look like, etc. I've got checklists for each company but it would be a lot faster (and less prone to 'forgetting') if I could set up something where if I'm sending to, say, <anybody>@abc.com, I can somehow get a reminder to come up that abc.com requires its file number first in the RE line and to cc their accounting department for all payment requests, but if I'm sending to <anybody>@xyz.com, it'll remind me that xyz.com requires emails to be sent to a central location, with the document name in its RE: line and attn: to the specific employee we're working with in their organization for that particular file. Not sure if this is possible using macros or VBA, but figured it doesn't hurt to ask. Thanks!

Well, it looks alright. Unfortunately, for those of us who left years ago, and now have everything registered to our [email protected] account...it's too much work to change again. Plus, I've registered a domain name through Google, my wife and I have a Google Apps account and we have a shared family calendar that we use between our computers and smartphones. Unforunately, for MS, I'm tied to Google for the forseeable future.

I need to move 8 of my email accounts to a different PC that already has MS Outlook running on it with a number of other email addresses that I need to monitor. I would prefer not to add the new email addresses to Outlook and would prefer to access them on a separate email client. What are the best choices in this regard? Obviously, Outlook and the client would need to play nice with each other, but that shouldn't be a problem, these days should it? I ask because the last time I needed to do this, I used Outlook and Eudora and they did not have any issues with each other, even running simultaneously. Yes, I know, I am getting old...

I don't think that it exists, but an email client that works with Outlook calendar invites would be ideal.

A:Best Non-Outlook Email Client?

I've been using Thunderbird for years and have yet to find anything to replace it. At this point I've migrated all of my accounts over to it and have nothing bad to say about.

As for calendars, I don't really know if you can integrate the Outlook calendar to it. There is an extension called "Lightning". That will integrate with Google calendar but that's as far as I've ever had to go with setting up a calendar in Thunderbird.

And for the record... I followed a near identical upgrade path as you did from the late 90s Eudora to Outlook (up to 2007) then finally just jumped ship. Haven't looked back.

So my question is pretty simple, but searching google yields no results. This may be because the problem is specific to obscurity or perhaps it is because I am unable to come up with keywords that are relevant enough. I have one contacts list. I see no reason anyone should ever need to maintain more than one. That's silly. Computer automation to the rescue! Except perhaps not. There seems to be an option in the 2013 distribution of outlook which implies that it can sync contact lists on command. But it doesn't do anything.

I did manage to find a post on a forum somewhere that talked about how outlook is just an email client and thus ONLY handles emails, but it wasn't specific to which distribution. My hopes are that they were wrong, or that 2013 is different, and I can do away with the third party application I downloaded.

I have XP SP2

I just recently got a new ISP so I called tech support to have him help me set up an email account. I prefer to use the email client Thunderbird by Mozilla. But the tech I got could only do it in Outlook Express.

When I go into Tools>Accounts>Properties and choose the Servers tab it says:
Server Information
My incoming mail is a POP3 server.
Incoming mail (POP3) POP3.live.com
Outgoing mail (SMTP) SMTP.live.com

Then right below that it says: Incoming Mail Server
Account name: [email protected]
Password *******

The Remember password box is checked and the Log on using Secure Password Authentication is not.

Then below that you have: Outgoing Mail Server
Then the box: My sever requires authentication is checked and this allowed us to set: Settings

The first thing says: Log on Information then the first radio button says: Use same settings as my incoming mail server This is not selected. The next button says: Logon using and then it says: Account name: [email protected] and Password ******* Under this is a check box that says: Remember password It's checked. Below this is another check box saying: Log on using Secure Password Authentication It's not checked.

So, the names of the servers appears to be POP3.live.com and SMTP.live.com. I tried plugging these into Thunderbird as the incoming and outgoing mail servers but it didn't like it. I'm admittedly far from being an expert here. Do I even have enough information?

As the title says, I use Microsoft Outlook '07 to access my Roadrunner and AOL POP accounts. If I send email from either account to one particular friend who uses windstream.net, and accesses his mail through Windstream's web mail page, it disappears without any trace that I can find. Not only doesn't he receive my newly composed messages, but he does not receive my direct replies either. That rules out a misspell. There is no evidence other contacts are not receiving my emails. I first thought maybe he had me blocked, however if I go to either of my two accounts' web based email pages, he receives my messages just fine.

And I always receive his emails. The only odd thing that might be a clue is that, since this began, about half of the email he sends me now, whether I view them in Outlook or on the web, is in plain format with system fonts. Sometimes they come to me in HTML.

I never get any delivery failure notification either. The last time he got one of my emails is when I sent out a July monthly newsletter to about a hundred people including him. I usually get the same few failure notifications because some of our members' addresses have changed or can't be found... the usual reasons, and I need to update my distribution list. But he got that letter in July, and that's the last time I've been able to send him anything through Outlook on either AOL or Roadrunner. Hey all

I just happily installed Win7 on my desktop and laptop. Included with that is Office 2010 Beta, which I want to use at least until October, when the trial expires.

I've decided to try and give all the stock MS programs a shot. I've become very irked by the fact that about six different companies offering two different suites with ten different programs in each suite, none of which compat well together, are what I get to sift through until I find my pick. I've currently been running Google Chrome and using GMail. Chrome is really nice, once I got used to the minimal interface. GMail, too, has long been a favorite of mine. However, I have Office and want to full utilize what I see as a great productivity suite, especially compared to Google's online suites, which seems to be still in the shaky ground of beta and new releases.

My issue is this: I've tried importing my GMail into Outlook, but there are a lot of discrepancies. Filters, for one, don't transfer from GMail into Outlook. I have like thirty messages in my inbox that should be in my school box. And I think trying to sync everything up would be a pain in the ass and need constant adjustment, especially since it's already been finnicky in the first day's use.

Is there some awesome way to get Outlook to recognize all my GMail settings? Or should I switch email clients (Which I'm fine to do. I just got a new phone, essentially a new laptop and desktop, and I'm moving, so why not go whole hog and change all... Read more

The best way of synchronising gmail and outlook is by the use of IMAP rather than POP3 access.

What this does is any actions performed at one location is duplicated in the other so if you have a rule operating in gmail the result is automatically reflected in Outlook and vice versa and the folder structure is also synchronised.

I actually find that gmails support for IMAP is not the best, (using tags rather than actual folders), but it does work.

A better Service for outlook/imap use is in my opinion Free Webmail and E-Mail by GMX | Sign Up Now!, which also looks more like outlook in use. you may want to have a look at this free service and as it has a mail collector, for your existing gmail account, can ease the transition

I have a domain, let's call it mydomain.com, and a whole bunch of domain email aliases (eg: [email protected], [email protected], etc) that all forward to my ISP pop3 email address account (default account).

I currently have rules setup so that emails sent to certain aliases at mydomain.com (which all come into my IPS email account) go to their associated folders setup in Outlook 2000, eg: [email protected] goes to the "Jim" folder, [email protected] goes to the "Mike" folder, etc, etc.

I also have a LAN email account setup in this copy of Outlook 2000 (although it's not set as my default). Emails on my LAN account use a virtual domain name to send within the network, let's call it mylanaccount.com.

Rather than have the emails go to folders on my computer, I'd rather they be forwarded on to the relevant address on our LAN, eg: emails that came in from [email protected] would be forwarded to [email protected].

Of course because mylanaccount.com is a virtual domain that doesn't exist in the big wide internet, these emails need to be forwarded on using the LAN account, not my default ISP pop3 email account.

So yeah, i still pay for my hotmail email just for the option to be able to use it with outlook Express (OE6)....without POP3.
Long story short, MS is killing OE6 ability to work with hotmail as of Sept 1. 2009!!!
(well except for POP3 access which i cant stand)

I liked thunderbird and the bat, but i really love the abilty to have totally separate identities like the OE6 offers. Not to mention the ability to password protect the entire identity / email client if wanted to with a password. (Without even being able to see any previously downloaded emails and whatnot)

Those are my two main things that i love about OE6 that i surprisingly have yet to find in any other email client....thus why i am still using OE6....and paying for a hotmail email.

Anyone got any suggestions?

Ill have to start my email client search and trials again...it's been about a year since i looked at anything else other than OE6.

Am beginning to wonder if Microsoft ever launch a product that works with other Microsoft products.

First all the browsers no matter where stopped working in windows 8. I tried command prompt as admin netsh winsock r (worked on 1st computer running win 8 that the browsers failed on) , but this had no effect so I did a clean boot which seems to have resolved this issue (2nd computer with win 8 on that the browsers stop working but internet running fine on them.).
Before this was done all of sudden outlook 2013 decided when starting to display the message: Either there is no default mail client or the current client cannot fulfill the messaging request. Please run Microsoft outlook and set it as the default mail client.

Now this I have done in all 3 areas, outlook, control panel and internet options within the IE browser. But nothing changes and they were all 3 set as default anyway.

Anyone have any idea why this happening and if there is a fix as I am getting to the point where I am beginning to despair with win 8 and outlook 2013 respectively, and recommend roll backs till they get their act together and sort them out.

Ya ya ya...i dont need to hear the bickering about OE6 and what not.

Basically im looking for a email client that has similar security features that OE6 has, like the option for seperate identity's and the identity passwords mostly. Particularilly how the identity passwords can prevent anyone from even opening the client fully so they cant even read any email that have all ready been downloaded.

If makes no sense why all these other email client are wide open so that anyone can click on a email client (firebird, thebat etc) and just waltz in and start reading emails. And to not even have a full lockdown option is pitiful IMHO.

Yes i could have it not save the passwords to download the emails...but the previously downloaded emails in the client can still be read...so whats the point?!?!.
Thats my main feature concern that im looking for in a email client. And since MS is going to kill the DAV protocol for hotmail in OE6 soon. Im looking for a good alternative email client, and hopefully stop using my hotmail account for good...which is the main reason i use OE6. I now i could use regualr outlook...but again the security issue...and the lack of future portability is also a thought..

A:Outlook 2007 (Exchange client) will not save contact email address

Appreciate that you have correlated the problem to Office 2007 SP2. I am having the same problem with an XP Pro PC using Outlook 2007 connected to Exchange 2003 over Http/RPC. There are two accounts: Exchange and one POP. If I take the Exchange connection "off line" it is possible to add the new email address to the contact. THEN, I can send the email via either Exchange or POP. Also, I cannot send an email to an address that is not already in "contacts", or apparently never sent an email to a particular address. So, same work around. Take Exchange offline and then send email via POP account. With Exchange back online, it is now possible to send to the new email address.

May I have the link to the help file you were referring to?  Thank you and when I get more info I will pass it on. The biggest con for me is no automatic updating when a new version comes out. I have had to uninstall and reinstall each time.

Hello friends. I am aware of websites like

and yes I have searched for alternatives through this site, but I am not satisfied with the results. The problem is, most of them don't allow as many e-mail accounts as I have. I currently use 18 e-mail accounts. Is there a good alternative to Thunderbird that allows unlimited accounts?
I can't afford eM Client, so what choices do I have? And please don't say Outlook.

Thank you

Windows live Mail...it's free and you can add as many email account as you like. It's what I refer to as the poor boys version of Outlook. I used it all the time until I got office and started using Outlook.

A:HELP! freeware server/client based pc monitoring?

If I'm understanding what you're asking, you simply want to know if a machine connected to the server is turned on?

If that's the case, you shouldn't need a program; every server software I've ever worked with maintains a list of connected clients. Even if it doesn't, couldn't this function also be performed by pinging the computers?

I am new to Exchange and am having some problems with it. I have two aliases set up and would like to move messages sent to either alias to a specific folder. In the past, I have successfully done this with client side rules based on a value in the subject line. Unfortunately, the text in the subject line is not standardized. When I receive an email sent to the alias it resolves to my username from the address book and is delivered to my inbox. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Hello message board! Just a few questions here I can not seem to find out via Google, manuals, and reading other forum posts... We are attempting to utilize a t610 with the Linux based o.s. and are running into a few hurdles... I have seen on "Windows" based thin clients, after you make a change to something, you must "Commit" the changes... Is there a way to do this on a Linux box? It seems that the o.s. partition is Read Only?? Also, is there a way to navigate files and folders on this type of thin client? I see the terminal in "Admin" mode and I can kind-of nav files and folders through the text editor, but I am at a semi-loss doing things this way... I know this may be a stupid question, but is there a way to re-image this thin client to a "Windows" based o.s.? The main problem I am experiencing is an add-on/extension in firefox is not "sticking" in my firefox browser.... I have installed the extension many times, and after I restart the browser, it is gone and my settings are reverted to "original"... I am taking a guess here, but I am guessing every time this client "reboots" it is booting to an image?? One last question, is there any "manuals" for these Linux based clients? I see most or all of the helps seems to be geared towards Windows, and would just like a reference... Thanks for reading!Brandon

A:T610 Linux based thin client

If you're talking about the HP ThinPro OS- Before you can make changes to the file system, you need to run this command from the terminal - "fsunlock". When you're done, "fslock" locks the file system again. There isn't another file explorer tool included that I'm aware of in ThinPro. Command line and the notepad tool are the only real ways to navigate the file system. If you're looking for help with something, keep in mind it is basically a stripped-down version of Ubuntu, with some extra utilities and GUI provided by HP. The nuts and bolts are the same as an Ubuntu build so I've gotten quite a bit of insight from Ubuntu forums online for problems that I've had. As for your browser extensions issue, depending on how you're doing this, you can configure connections to allow them to configure their own settings, or to use HP ThinPro settings. If you haven't allowed Firefox to create and use its own settings in the file system, nothing you change inside the browser will stick. I haven't tried installing a browser extension but I'm pretty sure that's where your problem is.

I use thunderbird to connect to my ARMY AKO email account. I noticed the majority of the time, the client has difficulty completing sending email. (Though some gets through without timing out.) IF I go directly to the website and use their email I have no problems at all. What could be causing this? I'd rather use my client email program than to have to go the email site. Bear in mind this only happens sometimes, more frequently than I'd like, and I am also overseas.

A:email client / online client difference

not familiar with thunderbird, but have you checked the usual settings against those listed at your army email service?
-POP3/SMPT/etc settings and addresses
-secure login/passwords
-firewall(s), ports etc..

A:Need alternative Email software for MS Exchange email

If you don't mind it being web based, I believe www.outlook.com will allow you to connect to an exchange account.
