Lenovo Yoga 900 - Black screen after sleep or hibernate when lid is shut.

Q: Lenovo Yoga 900 - Black screen after sleep or hibernate when lid is shut.

Hi The laptop was working perfectly until i updated the intel HD graphics driver to version 23.20.16.4849 (27/10/17). As soon as I did this, the machine would not wake from either sleep or hibernate mode when the lid was shut. When I open the lid it will either enter staright into a black screen, and I can hear the fan spinning with lights to the right hand side but no further activity. Sometimes the Lenovo log appears on the screen first and then enters into a blank screen state. I am on Bios Lenovo C6CN34WW 29/10/15 As soon as I press and hold the power button to turn off, and then turn on again the machine loads into windows perfectly, with a visible display. Any suggestions how to fix this? Thanks

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi Neramusis, welcome to the forums.

Can you please post the full model number of your Thinkpad?

The only idea that I have right now is why do you try to update the drivers of you computer, specially the Lenovo Power Management Driver.

This are my tips about updating drivers on the Thinkpad:

1) Try first Windows Update and update all the drivers and Patches
2) Try Lenovo System Update to get any new/missing drivers.
3) Try to install Lenovo Settings and Lenovo Companion from the Windows App Store, Lenovo Companion also has a "update driver search"
4) Sometimes all that software does not recognize some updated / missing driver. Check Lenovo's Support Site and search for your specific model drivers.

I know that this is "trial and error", but I think that updating the drivers may help with this issue.

Hello, I would like to preface this by saying that I have spent a lot of time trying to figure this out myself and I would greatly appreciate your help. My laptop is a Lenovo Yoga (Machine Type Model 20CDX00) that has problems with shutting down and sleeping sometimes. The problem started after I restored my laptop with a clean copy of windows 10.  I installed all of the drivers and I also updated my BIOS.  I noticed that sometimes my laptop would not shut down completely and the battery would just drain in the blank screen that I couldn't do anything about.  This also happened with sleep to.  Not all the time, but sometimes.  I tried to turn of hibernate and also fast start-up.  But, that did not work.  I, then, restored my computer again and I tried to reset the BIOS to the original BIOS.  I am still having these problems even after the restore which makes me believe that the BIOS is at issue becuase it is ROM and would not have been changed by my restoring of the laptop.  But, I did try to reset the BIOS to a previous version.  So, I am stuck and I do not know what to do.

Hi,I have tried to install windows 10 enterprise 2016 LTSB, on two T480s and both have the and issue now with a black laptop display when I close the lid open the display again ("when I close the lid" is set to sleep). The windows installation is from the iso on a usb. And just after the Windows installation I have the issue. and it is still there after full windows update and lenovo update. When I got the 2. laptop it worked with the orginal image (start the pc for the first time and let it finish), but after re-installation I got the issue. I have tried a few things without luck (turn of fast startup, disable secure boot, monitor profile update) but i cant make it work. If I attach an external monitor I get a dispaly on this external monitor (via hdmi), and I can see one Generic PNP Monitor (the external monitor), it seems like that the internal display is disconnected if choose show hidden devices in the device manager, and can't be enabled (i have also tried to rescan for new hardware without any luck). When I reboot  the display is back again. I dont have this issue on the t470 model with the same approach. What do I miss, some driver/windows setting or ? Thanks in advanceregardsMartin

Okay so this is an odd problem I've started having. I don't know why it has started happening with hibernate as well. Originally on Vista x64 I always used to use sleep and everything worked perfectly fine, but now randomly on Windows 7 x64, resuming from sleep would end up having my ATI display driver crash and stop responding randomly (it would show up in event viewer). So instead i started using Hibernate, and now when i turn on my computer again, i will see the "Resuming windows" animation. But the screen will be completely black once it gets to the logon screen. I can even type in my password and hear the logon sound, but it will still be black. There are no display driver crashes shown in event viewer for this either.

Any ideas?

Edit: I found a bunch of these in the ACEEventLogSource, don't know if it means anything. Google didn't help.

Backup your data
There's no telling when this will stop working for you.

Uninstall all ATI software from your system.
Then go to http://www.ati.com and download the Display Driver Only (NOT the Catalyst Control Center) for your video card and OS
Install that Display Driver Only and see if the error stop.

I bought my laptop in 2015 and unwarranted, I'd like some help to get full functionality back into my laptop. While the subject states my problem, I do have some ways of getting use out of the computer:It can turn on if the battery is fully drained and after the computer is plugged in; it takes 8 days to drain. [Pressing and holding the power button only results in the PC flashing its backlit keyboard.] The battery can recharge and the PC can run on battery just as long the PC does not shut down, go to sleep, or the lid closes.Battery removal with the PC plugged in: the PC can always turn on, but when closing the lid or shutting it off, the power cord has to be unplugged and plugged back in.Additional computer information:-Windows 8.1 with updates-Installed BIOS update and Windows hotfix update from Lenovo.com

Hi forums, I am an IT professional supporting a business laptop refresh from older Dells to Lenovo t480s (20L7) laptops. For Bitlocker best practices and per our InfoSec team's directives we set our computers to hibernate whenever they would otherwise sleep.  We have noticed that several freshly imaged computers, with all Lenovo System Update drivers installed, and with the SCCM driver package from the Lenovo site installed, will show a black screen after resuming from hibernate. The laptop backlight and Function key lights are on, the power button is lit up, and the fan does spin, but the screen is black, no backlight, and the laptop is totally unresponsive until a hard reboot (hold the power button). Interestingly, the system cannot be pinged or remoted into while in this state, and opening/closing the lid has no effect.  Has anyone seen anything similar to this, or know what might be the cause?  Thank you in advance.

A:Lenovo Yoga C930: Laptop switches modes randomly, sometimes thinks it's shut and just goes black!

Problem seems to have fixed itself, but I'm still worried. It's like something is making the laptop confused. Sometimes it doesn't know if it's in tablet mode, laptop mode, or closed. There's been times where the screen just shuts off, and I need to close and open the laptop again to get it to work. In fact, it was this that caused the issue in the first place. Is there anything that might be causing this system confusion?

My laptop, running Windows Ten from a clean install, has issues with the sleep function. About once a day, when I either put the computer to sleep or when it does it on its own, the screen will go black but the computer will not stop running. All the lights are on, the fan and disks keep running. Nothing works to turn the screen back on and my only option becomes to force a shut down.

I've tried tweaking all the power options in various ways, I've tried disabling/enabling hibernation/fast start and I've searched for an answer but I do not have one.

Thank you,
Ed

Hi, I have the device since 2-3 months. Since some time, the yoga has problems coming back from sleep.  Usually i press the button, or open the lid and the device starts to the login screen in 2-3 seconds.  Sometimes, pressing the button or opening the lid does not work. The power button light stops "breathing" and turns on, but the screen stays black. It looks random to me. Only way to solve this is to press power button for 10 seconds and reboot completely (tried different things, e.g. detaching, attaching external screen, press the button shortly, close and open the lid).  I turned of hybrid sleep and fast startup, but did not help. Somebody else experiencing this?  Any solution available?  Best regards

I recently purchased a Lenovo Yoga 730-13" laptop, and I'm writing this post after only having the laptop in my possession a couple of weeks. Starting today my screen has gone began rapidly flashing to black (not asleep as the screen still emits a slight light), for no discernable reason. I haven't dropped or otherwise damaged the laptop in any way since receiving it, but I have very little technical knowledge when it comes to computers and the like so I don't know exactly how to pinpoint the problem otherwise. The flashing to black seems to come and go randomly, I thought it might have to do with the orientation of the screen but after some experimentation, that side of things seems unrelated. Restarting the computer seems to have helped for the most part and the flashes to black aren't as common, but still occur sparsely. I'm not sure at this point if I should take the computer into a professional or if there is some other sort of solution.

Please Someone Expain More Info For This 3 Mode ?

Sleep Mode It's Same Shut down But Save Time For Startup Again But Use More Energy ?

I'm Desktop PC

A:Shut down / Sleep / Hibernate ???

Sleep mode means your user session is kept stored in the memory (RAM) while everything else (other than LED lights) is turned off. If you unplug your PC while in sleep mode, you lose all unsaved work since RAM is not able to store data without electricity unlike Hard drives.

Hibernate means the user session that is stored in the memory is stored in a file called hiberfil.sys and then Windows completely turns off all the devices and the computer itself. You can uplug your PC safely by using this mode. When you turn on your PC, you basically get to your previous user session.

Shutdown is self-explanatory.

A:Sleep, hibernate or shut down?

It depends entirely on how you use your computer/laptop and how long its going to be unused in my opinion ,I shutdown when I go to work ,I use sleep when I'm at home and used it every now and then ,shut it down most nights ,I never use hibernate .

Hello,
I had upgraded by laptop computer from windows vista to windows 7 about 3.5 months ago. My computer has been working fine until about 2-3 days ago when it stopped being able to hibernate, sleep or shut down. Whenever I try to sleep or hibernate my computer the screen goes black but the computer is still on. When I try to shutdown my computer it forever says on the "logging off" screen. I'm not very tech savvy so I have no idea what to do. Programs I try to install now won't work either. They just will not open. I tried to do a system restore but it won't let me do that either, saying that there's an error. I've tried uninstalling programs that I had installed in the past week as well as used CC cleaner to no avail. Someone please help! I will need step by step instructions as I am not that computer savvy. Thanks!

A:Machine Won't Hibernate, Sleep or Shut down

You can try to restore via Safe Boot.
Go into Start, bottom left of screen. type msconfig. Click that, msconfig.exe.

When that opens, go to the Boot tab. Go to boot options, and select Safe Boot\minimal.

Once your system reboots, then try your system restore. See if that gets rid of error.

I've been experiencing this problem for about a week now. It started seemingly randomly, as I haven't made any significant changes to my computer. If I try to hibernate or shut down my computer it hangs up on either "Logging off" or "Shutting down" and stays there. I've let it run for as long as an hour, but ultimately I have to crash my computer every time I need to turn it off.

I don't know what to do here, so I would really appreciate some help

If yes, do a system restore and pick that date as your restore point.

I cracked my screen and replaced with a new one.   Now when I close the lid, it won't go to sleep; rather it goes to tablet mode.   I have to press the power button to make it go to sleep.   I put back the original screen and it goes to sleep as it should.   I've tried two different brand new screens and it will never go to sleep when closed.    Lenovo doesn't sell replacement screens so I'm forced to go to ebay or Amazon.   I have checked setting to make sure it goes to sleep when the lid closes.   The magnets are in the replacements.  Hmm, has anyone ever experienced this?  Any recommendations what to do?   Thank you for your input.

Hi Farazd5292 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

How was the display connecting it on the external monitor?
Is the display dim even on the BIOS screen?

Dim screen in BIOS with external monitor ok isolates the issue to the LCD panel lightning.
Call in technical support for hardware issue specially if the display goes out along with the Power LED.

Hope this help answer your query.

Whenever i lean my Yoga 920 at the center (so all the pressure is focused at top-center), instead of the gums at the four corners, my computer screen blacks out until I remove the pressure. It's a really uncommon way to lean the computer, but I was asking myself if this is a worrying problem. Perhaps, by repeatedly pressuring that point when I might keep the laptop on my laps or when I carry it in a bag it could worsen that problem even more.

As it says in the subject: my laptop screen keeps going dark for a second or two while in use (and plugged in). It's not going to sleep or shutting down; any music playing doesn't cut out, and when the black screen goes away I'm still logged in and my programs are all up and running as they were before the flicker. Last night while running on battery, it shut down on 18% power and wouldn't switch back on for almost an hour, even while plugged in. I don't know if that was the start of the problem; the black flicker started happening today. I think it's happened three or four times today. I only bought the computer three months ago and it's definitely not experienced any knocking around or anything.  Can anyone tell me what's wrong and how to fix it?

Hello DennyLarsonThanks for using the Lenovo forums.Sounds like something may have potentially got fried perhaps.

Try a static discharge for this, it may help to resolve the issue or at least get rid of any built up static on the motherboard.(If the battery is internal, please just skip the remove/replace battery steps.)1. Turn the unit off2. Remove the battery and the Mains adapter3. Press and hold the front power button for 30 seconds4. Replace the battery and the Mains adapter5. Turn the unit on as normal
If these steps do not work I would recommend, that you call your local Lenovo support line for a possible service. Below is the link to the phone list where you can find these numbers

Hope this helps, let us know how you get on.==================================================================================Did someone help you today? Thank them with a Kudo! If you find a post helpful and it answers your question, please mark it as an "Accepted Solution"!

Searching for Intel HD Graphics driver updates from Device Manager doesn't detect anything -- though I see the Intel site has a 15.40.14.4352 version that claims to address screen flicker. Automated brightness management is off. The laptop is plugged in, so battery power saving shouldn't be a factor. Question for the community: can I install the 4352 driver from the Intel site? Or do I have to wait for Lenovo to add special OEM features to the stock Intel driver?

Hi, I am join the Lenovo forums to seek assitance with an issue with my Thinkpad Yoga 14. I recently purchased the notenook from Best Buy and it has been great.  But there's an intermitten issue with the screen going black. My theory was that the ambient light sensor is what tells the laptop it's closed, and it was getting obscured, causing my screen to turn off. This issue occurs when I am using it in tablet mode and during the process of the folding the screen back. The screen is fine in laptop mode, unless I adjust the angle of the screen.  So it seems every time I place my hand on the screen to draw, or fold the hinge, the screen will turn black. I have taken the following steps:-Updated Windows and all my Lenovo Apps.-Changing power options to 'Do Nothing' when lid closes.  Does anyone else have this issue? I am hoping this is not a hardware issue   Thanks everyone.

Hi guys, My first message here and unfortunately, it's not for the coolest reason.I have a Yoga 500-14 IHW that works perfectly well when plugged, but I noticed a few days ago that as soon as I unplugged it from the USB type power port, the screen suddenly turns black. I thought it was a question of brightness, drivers, windows power plan, etc. I have also tried all the solutions here (https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/forums/v3_1/forumtopicpage/board-id/ll06_en/page/6/thread-id/28087), without success once again. One thing that I noticed and that bothers me a lot is the fact that once it is unplugged, if I try to power on the laptop, the screen is black and no Lenovo spash screen appears. The computer is working, the lights are on, I can hear the fans of the graphics card, but no screen. And of course, as soon as I plug in the power cable, the screen lights up and I'm in front of the Windows login page. If I want to access the BIOS, I can only do so once it is plugged. If I want to start from a live cd, I can only do it once plugged. All of this leads me to think that my laptop screen is broken and no longer works when it is unplugged. Is it a battery problem? The battery is at 100% right now, but is there perhaps a more specific test to be done on the battery?I'm waiting for good ideas to check what else is going on. Otherwise, do you confirm that I will have to return the computer in warranty?Thank you very much,Jed13

YOGA 900-13ISK2 SEPN: 80UEBIOS: 2UCN6WW16 GB RAM / I7-6560 / WIN 10 x64 Home    I got my new Yoga 900 few weeks ago and ever since it's been randomly freezing. The laptop is with this problem from day one and without any additional software installed. There's no error message or anything, it just freeze or flickering and than freezes completely without a BSOD and the only way to use it again is to shut it off and turn it back on. The freeze looks strange: black screen, any sounds playing would either stop or repeat indefinitely and the fan noise high. The LED backlight is on, but completely black display. I had to shut down my computer by pressing the power key and then restarting again. There is no clear error massage in Event log: ?Audit events have been dropped by the transport. 0? and ?Unexpected shutdown?. For some reason, it's much more frequent on battery power and almost non-existant on AC power and High Performance Power Options. But whit this solution the battery life is highly impacted and the fan noise is high, which makes no sense for this notebook class!!!!Action taken:Windows 10 Home ?
