ThinkPad L560 - searching for boot on "num lock" in BIOS

Q: ThinkPad L560 - searching for boot on "num lock" in BIOS

Hi,I have a new L560 and want to enable the num lock with system start. I found several posts about activating via Win registry, what was successful already - but using bitlocker I need the num keyboard before Windows is starting.I checked the BIOS but I did not found the right entry or something that sounds in the right direction.Someone any ideas or experiences? Many thanks in advance.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, I was wondering if you could help me, I want to upgrade the BIOS of the L560 from 1.18 to 1.43. Each time I try this, it boots into the bios system, I select bios update and follow the steps until the screen says that it will reboot, but it never does. (see screenshot) Frozen at this screenAfter hours of waiting, trying to long press (20 sec) the power button shuts down the computer. Afterwards the computer boots but displays "Secure Flash Authentication failed!"After forced rebootAfter that I have to long press (20 sec) the power button again to restart the computer and it boots back into the 1.18 (I have also tried to update to version 1.22 or 1.17 (downgrade), with the same results)And also tried to "upgrade" to the same version 1.18 as well, which doesn't work because the system says that there is no new version. Do you have any tips how to upgrade the BIOS on the L560? Kind RegardsOlaf

Hello Dear Lenovo community, I recently got my new L560 Thinkpad and installed Linux (Mint 18, based on Ubuntu 16.04) on it. Unfortunately the fan is ramping up quiet loud when it is starting to run, just to go down to an acceptable level after half a second or so. But that first half second it seems to run on full power which is actually quiet annoying. Not only to me but also in meetings. As it turns out, I am not able to control or regulate the fan's behaviour.Usually with the older Thinkpads I used to work with (ok that is some long time ago), it was possible to control the fan using the thinkpad_acpi kernel module thus having a virtual file in '/proc/acpi/ibm/fan' which allowed control of the Thinkpads fan within Linux just by writing level values to it. Another way was to write rpm values directly to the pwm file somewhere in the /sys section. However, it seems that newer Thinkpads tell the kernel where to find the fan and thus a '/proc/acpi/ibm/fan' file is provided. But any values I write to this file in order to change the level will be ignored, same for the pwm file in the /sys section. The fan-file constantly states:level 1rpm 257The pwm-file is stuck at 36.Even if the fan is not running at all or on full power. It seems that the new models of L/T series ignore any commands from the OS in order to regulate the fan's speed.  I assume that could be fixed with an update of the firmware/UEFI (I have 1.15 installed, the newest, 1.17 doe... Hi! I have a brand new Thinkpad L560, a week old. Installed brand new Windows 10 x64.Everything worked well.  When I installed ESET Endpoint Security, few times a day my LAN connection would break in terms that I will loose connectivity to the Internet and internal servers (I can not ping internal DNS servers, any of my coworkers have no problems). If I switch to wireless connection when the LAN is down, everything works OK. My LAN connection will not get back to the Internet until I reboot the machine (I will have yellow exclamation mark in notification area saying that I do not have the access to the internet and if I unplug and plug the cable, Windows will say "Identifying network" but will never finish it). I updated Intel Ethernet Connection I219-LM driver to the latest release (12.15.23.1 dated 10th may 2016) but the problem continued. I deinstalled ESET and installed ESET Antivirus without firewall. Same thing happened with exact the same behaviour. I deinstalled ESET and installed AVG. Same thing happened after half an hour. So I decided to ask for help here since I can not work without antivirus software.  Do you have any suggestions? Thanks! Best regards,Bojan Miljkovic

Hi! I have Lenovo Thinkpad L560 (Type: 20F1-0029MH). After ~2 weeks of usage, I faced a weird problem - there was no way I could power it off.The following actions:- shutdown- hibernate- press power button for 12swill shutdown the computer, but it will start up again immediately. Laptop has all the updates from Microsoft and Lenovo, including latest BIOS. The only solution, which worked, was to reset CMOS by removing the BIOS battery. I did it 2 weeks ago, but today I faced the same problem again. Removing battery fixed the problem again! But is there any better solution to try?

I just received a brand new Thinkpad P50 with Windows 10 Pro. It originally came with a 256GB SATA M.2 SSD where Windows 10 Pro was installed. I was originally able to get into the BIOS settings by holding 'enter' during boot up where it displayed a message like 'to interrupt normal start up, press enter'. I know this worked before because I went in to check on the virtualization settings to enable them. Upon booting Windows 10 Pro, I immediately used the Windows Backup and Recovery to take a full system image and created a Windows repair disc too. I then swapped the 256GB SATA M.2 SSD for a 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD and used the Windows repair disc to restore the system image onto the new 512GB SSD. The restore process completed successfully and rebooted, but at this point, the system would not reboot with error "INACCESSIBLE BOOT DEVICE". After a lot of messing about, I eventually did a "reset my PC" where it appears to re-install Windows and now it boots up just fine on the new 512GB NVMe M.2 SSD. Although not as smooth of a process as I would have hoped, but at least I made progress. HOWEVER, now when I boot the machine, and I see the message 'to interrupt start up, press enter' message, pressing enter does nothing and it immediately boots Windows. The only way I can get back into the BIOS settings is:1) boot into Windows2) -> 'settings'3) -> 'update & security'4) -> 'recovery'5) -> 'restart now'6) -> 'Troubleshoot'7) -> 'Advanced options'8) ->... Today I updated my P50 BIOS to latest version available on the Lenovo website: https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/rs/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-... Something is seriously wrong with this BIOS update. It worked like charm before, and now it won't boot when docked (Workstation Dock for P50/P70). The only way to use it docked is to first undock it, start the boot process and when Windows 10 logo appears on screen, then quickly re-dock it. I tried to load BIOS factory defaults, but it did not help. Discrete graphics (M1000M) is forced in BIOS and display priority is set to docking station. Anybody else having this problem and how did you solve it?  Regards,Dragan

Noob at this and need assistance if possible.... Installing a new SSD (taking out the current), and for the life of me I cannot get into the Bios anymore nor finding the "boot order menu" for my USB Thumb drive using the F-12 key, nor the F-1 key.  I did from time to time, but it was hit and miss using the F-12 key. When I did get into the Bios prior, I went into Settings> Update & Security>Recovery>TroubleShoot method, entered Bios, then "Start Up" menu, but I could not find the sub menu "Boot Up Order" to change it for my Thumb drive to install the OS to my new SSD.   Hope I was somewhat clear.  Anyone can assist ?  Thank You so very much

So, my friend has just received a laptop that isn't exactly functional at the moment. It only has Ubuntu on it, which is in guest mode, and there is no known password for elevated privileges (that we actually have). So I made her a bootable USB with Windows on it to install. The problem is that we can't seem to get into the BIOS, no matter how quick we are (tried everything). When taken to the GRUB bootloader, this is all we get:

Are there any commands I can use in Grub to get it to see the USB, or is there something I can accomplish in guest mode to change the delay so I can get into the BIOS? Or, is there a way I can help her get sudo access? I thought maybe it could have something to do with fast boot or something, but I have no idea. It's a little difficult because she's across the country, but I know more than she does when it comes to computers, so I'm trying to help.

The laptop is a Lenovo ThinkPad T450. Please feel free to ask me for any other necessary information. I wasn't sure if this would be enough, but didn't know what else to include.
Thank you in advance for your time! ^_^

Hi, I just bought the Thunderbolt 3 dock and remembered reading that you have to make some changes in BIOS for the usb hub to be detected in linux. So I entered BIOS and disabled thunderbolt security and enabled some other thunderbolt feature (the one below thunderbolt security, the tooltip tells you to enable this for linux support and older versions of windows 10). After saving and rebooting all I see is a blank screen and the fans start going at full speed. The computer does not boot into my OS and I am not able to enter BIOS again. Any ideas how I can fix this? Is there a way to factory reset the BIOS without entering it? Usual solution here is to remove the CMOS battery but I really don't want to open my brand new laptop unless I know my warranty is still valid. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We have two new Lenovo thinkpad P71, both identical. One of them started to have boot up issue (takes about 2.5 minutes for the first boot up of the day, then any restart during that day will be fine) So, I have been trying to resolve this issue this past couple of days without success. However, I found out that the BIOS version were different on both machine. Both machine requested to update the BIOS after the initial setup. One of them I updated but the other I didn't. The Laptop with the updated BIOS has the version 1.17 (which is odd since the latest version on Lenovo website is 1.16) https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/ca/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-p-series-laptops/thinkpad-... The laptop that was not updated has the version 1.15 and it does not have the long boot up time issue. So I was wondering if it was normal to have version 1.17? Also, is it possible and should I go back to version 1.15? Any help / tips would be appreciated. Thanks.

A:ThinkPad X280: After BIOS update, notebook won't boot anymore

It is not very difficult to remove the CMOS/Coin Cell battery on that system, just remove the main battery, and then loosen 3 screws to open the large bottom cover (see page 73 of the ThinkPad E560 and E565 Hardware Maintenance Manual for details on removing the cover)    Once the cover is open, unplug the CMOS/Coin Cell battery (you don't actually have to remove the battery), wait a few minutes and then plug it back in (see page 81 of the HMM for details). Doing so will not effect your warranty, but don't force anything and keep track of the screws.

My 230u has been stuck in a loop since a recent Windows Update. The machine crashes while booting Win 8.1, reboots and crashes again during the recovery phase, then this cycle repeats. Reinstalling Windows doesn't work, as the same thing occurs during the install process, even with a 'clean' install. I've run the pre-boot Lenovo Diagnostics, and every result reads 'PASSED'. I've attempted to update the BIOS from both a bootable CD and bootable USB, and the result reads 'failed to read bios". The machine is currently a brick that passes all diagnostics. Is there any solution to this? EDIT: Current bios version is 1.70

It keeps going into a loop for the boot order. When I select something it just takes me back to the menu. Any help here is appreciated. Thank you!

See subject.  Ever since the BIOS upgrade, the dock no longer crashes.  Two days running now with no problems; prior to the upgrade it would crash routinely when connecting via USB-C.  I had to employ the unsavoury workaround of connecting the laptop to a charger and connecting it to the dock via the USB-A port using the USB-A to USB-C adaptor supplied.  Now I'm connecting via USB-C cable only. In fact, I'd given up on using the dock at all and had it just sitting there.  I decided to give it another go after reading that BIOS v1.19 fixed instances of BSODs occuring when connected to an external monitor (which I did experience now and again when connecting to an external monitor via HDMI i.e. not via dock).    Dock Type : 40AFX1E Type : 20MF

Hello,
I am having problems with direct booting into Windows 8 installed into a VHDX file.
This is a four-partition UEFI boot on a GPT drive. EFI files are residing on a second partition of disk 0 (the ESP partition) in the EFI folder. The boot virtual disk is residing on the fourth partition of that disk 0.
When I turn on the PC, it shows black screen after the BIOS POST screen. No Windows 8 boot menu, no other information is displayed. However, if I press Shift+F12 (or F12) to start Dell BIOS Boot Menu and choose Windows Boot Manager from the UEFI part of
the boot menu, Windows 8 starts to boot without difficulties.
How do I make Windows to boot automatically without having to select Windows Boot Manager in DELL BIOS boot menu?
I believe I messed up with boot sector somehow... What needs to be fixed provided that Windows 8 will boot into VHDX file?
Thank you.

Well this is the world we live in And these are the hands we're given...

Try reseating your RAM securely in their slots.  I have read that blinking of any of the lock indicators is a sign of memory failure.

Hi, Can you match the sequence of 'blinks' to those shown in the table below.  Can you post back with the full Model No. and Product No. of your notebook - see Here for a guide on locating this information. Regards, DP-K

Hello People!

I've gotten an old 286 Mainboard with a 286 @10MHz. Now I'm searching the vendor of the BIOS / Mainboard because it sends out a beepcode not used by standards (AMI, Award, Phoenix).
There are two BIOS-EPROMS and a keyboard BIOS-EPROM.

Code:
2000
ODD RA03
V3.0 U70
Code:
2000
EVEN RA03
V3.0 U72
Code:
2000
PSA KB2.44
CKS:4A00 R
The Mainboard is a "PWA-286C BD" with Chips&Tech Chipset. Googling for anything written on the board was helpless...

The Beep-Code it sends is: Long - Short - Long - Short

Any Ideas?

Hello,

I have an issue with the detection of my SSD in the Toshiba Satellite L50-A-1EH (PSKK6E).
It only gets detected in the BIOS 1 on 30 times when booting (after which it runs great).
Setting the "SATA Interface setting" to "Battery life" fixes the detection problem, at the cost of a speed reduction of factor 4.5.

Some people who had similar issues, resolved this by flashing an older version of the BIOS.

Currently I have v1.70, which is the latest.

Where can I find older BIOS'es / the BIOS archives?

Regards,
Arthur Borsboom.

Unfortunately on the Toshiba download page you can find latest version only.
Have you upgraded your machine with SSD?

My 2 month old T480s is really annoying to use as the lock screen locks the laptop after less than one minutes of not using the keyboard or mouse. The notebook has Windows 10 Pro and I cannot for example watch a video longer than 1 minutes as the laptop lock screen is activated and I have to enter the user PIN or use the facial recognition feature to login back and unlock the laptop. I have tried all the tricks I found online including editing the (GPedit) group policy administrative template personalization, disabling the screen lock screen using Regedit to change the registry settings, and changing windows 10 Power & Sleep settings. Are there any BIOS settings that can prevent the lock screen from activating in such a short time or to completely disable it? Thank you,Hamdy
