External Monitor

Q: External Monitor

I close the lid on my laptop to enter the "Sleep Mode". when I open the lid to return to a normal state, I lose my external monitor. In order to get it back, I need to go through personalize option and redetect the monitors.

I have employed the use of the MCE standby tool, Slick Solutions - Home of the MCE Standby Tool (MST) useing various configurations, but nothing has worked. Any ideas ?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have an HP laptop and I have been running it with dual monitors. I finally decided to upgrade to Windows 7 and after I installed it I noticed that the built in monitor of my laptop looked strange and when I opened the display settings to change the screen resolution and set the external monitor as a separate monitor rather than a mirror I noticed that only one monitor was detected and it was the external one (Generic non-pnp monitor on standard VGA graphics adapter) and the built in monitor does NOT show up at all.

I've tried the detection button, in hopes that the computer would read the built in monitor and I could fix the problem. This did not help. I tried unplugging/replugging the external monitor to no avail. I tried restarting without the external monitor plugged in and it STILL reads the built in monitor as if it is the external one. Is there anyway to fix this? I have not tried re-installing the OS, not yet anyways.

Any suggestions ?

A:Monitor Issues - Laptop Reading Built In Monitor as if it were my external monitor.

Only thing I can think of is to disconnnect the external monitor, uninstall any monitors listed and then reboot and hope the computer installs the correct drivers for the laptop monitor.

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

I believe the monitor has quiet a few inputs however I am not 100% sure which lead to get to connect them both and which port I use on the Dell Laptop. I'm using a T430s and a mini dock plus series 3. This is the dock with the dual DVI, dual DisplayPort, 1x VGA. I do not use the laptop's built-in screen; just the 2 external monitors. Intel HD4000 graphic chip and Nvidia Optimus/ I previously had 2 20" monitors with a 1680x1050 resolution using DVI-to-DVI. They both worked fine. I upgraded to 2 24" monitors with a 1920x1200 resolution. The laptop is not recognizing the second monitor. I have tried:dual display port (dock side) to mini display port (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizeddual dvi (dock side) to HDMI (monitor side): only 1 monitor recognizedI ruled out monitor and cable problems by swapping...each by itself works fine. Looking up specs, I believe this resolution should be supported by DP or DVI. Can anybody confirm that this is a supported config? Any ideas what is wrong? UPDATE - I did try 1 DP/mDP and 1 DVI/HDMI: this does work. However, its not an ideal solution because it would interfere with the monitors ports which I want to use for a second PC. UPDATE 2 - OK, now I am beyond aggrivated. I also have a support ticket w/ Lenovo where they suggested switching to Integrated Graphics only in the BIOS. I tried that, no luck. After changing that setting back, i tried to get my 1 DP / 1 DVI working, but now it would not recognize dual monitors. ??? After some testing, I'm finding that the -only- setup that works is the following: Dock DVI port 1 to Moni... Fixed; was a driver issue. Problem seems exclusive to a Dell u2415 on DP port 1 only of the dock or to the laptop's DP port (at least for the couple monitors I tried). It's possible it could affect other monitors. My starting point: 9.18.13.4535 / 9.17.10.2843 (Nvidia /  Intel) The latest driver from Lenovo is 9.18.13.4535 / 8.15.10.2725. I'm not sure how i have a slightly newer Intel, but that's what it was. I couldn't install the Lenovo driver. I also couldn't install a newer driver from Intel (10.18.10.4276). In both cases Windows or the Intel installer stopped me saying the mfr provided the drivers and that the installed version was up to date. I worked around by first rolling back the Intel driver. The manual (.zip) install of the latest intel driver worked. This immediately fixed the Dell u2415 on DP port 1 and laptop's built-in DP port.

I have a dell laptop that has 1920x1080 resolution. However, i connect it to an external monitor that has 1920x1200 resolution. Basically almost everything i do is on my external monitor which acts as my main primary screen. Thus i do sometimes open some windows or drag a window or so to the other screen like youtube etc to the laptop screen which is the secondary monitor.

My issue at the moment is everything is way too big on the laptop screen. I want to have 1920x1080 resolution but its way too big. I googled what is my resolution on it and it shows 1536 x 864. Can someone tell me how to change this to 1920x1080? I googled what is my resolution on the external monitor and it does show 1920x1200 which is correct.

My external monitor which is my main monitor is fine at the moment with the 1920x1200. Its windows 10 but im assuming this should be very similar to windows 7 to fix this issue?

Windows 10 laptop. I connect it to an external monitor and use hdmi cable. My external monitor is my main monitor. I use the laptop monitor as the secondary monitor. I extend the display.

My desktop icons are always on my external monitor desktop. I had moved the hdmi cable connected to my laptop i believe which caused all my icons from my external monitor to go on the laptop monitor. Also there is even spacing on all of the icons. Has anyone had this happened? I then clicked sort and then it rearranged so there is no spacing etc. However, i then noticed hey why are my icons on my laptop monitor and not my external monitor.

Does anyone know why this happened? When i open chrome and other programs, it does open up on my external monitor though which is my primary monitor. I believe i can just drag each of the icons on my desktop on my laptop screen to my external monitor. So just do this and that fixes the issue right? Or is there a way to have all the icons just move to the external monitor. The reason i ask this is in case the icons just suddenly move to the laptop screen again.

I'm not sure if I should have put this in "Hardware" or not so...
I am, by far, a professional at this so hang in there with me if I confuse you. A few months ago my children broke the screen on my laptop and for a few weeks I was trying to use the External Monitor so it would show up on a monitor my sister gave me. Well I finally got that up and working however, now when I connect my external hard drive to the laptop, it will not show up on the desktop monitor. (The external hard drive is Western Digital).

This external monitor is a new thing for me, actually I knew you could do it but didn't try it as an option until my nephew - who is much younger than me - thought of it lol. Anyway, I have pictures and such on my external hard drive that were put onto the external by the very laptop I am using. I'm not totally sure of the montior I am using, all I can tell you at the moment is it's a Dell. The laptop is a Toshiba Satellite A135 S266; the laptop has Vista Home Basic (32 bit) and I believe the desktop monitor is running with Vista too but I'm not sure if that's important since it is only serving as a "view." Anyway, I would love some help with why the drive may not be working with this set up.

Thanks,
Kerri

Also, are you saying it's not showing up in 'My Computer', or are you not getting the option to open files?

Hi, all, I have a Dell XPS 15 laptop and recently bought a Asus MB169B external USB monitor.  When I plug the monitor in, the laptop monitor (not the external monitor) flickers about every half second.  If I unplug it, it stops.  I upgraded my video driver to no avail.
Is it simply a power supply issue (the external monitor  does not have a power cord)?  Anything I can do?  It does it even if I have the laptop plugged in and charging.
*something interesting - I just discovered if I duplicate the display and not extend the flickering goes away...but that kind of defeats the point of a dual monitor for me.
Thanks.

Hi NATURAL1DAVE,
What is the exact system model?
Have you connected the external monitor to a dock or hub or directly to the system USB port?
Update the BIOS - http://dell.to/1n3X2po - enter the service tag and download the BIOS, update and restart the machine and check.
Reinstall the video drivers and chipset drivers for the system from the above link and check.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.

Hi, few days ago screen on my notebook Probook 6560b  with discreete GPU 6470M went black.  Monitor does not have any backlight and also there is no picture on it (looking at angle...so it is not faulty backlight). Pulled all devices out (HDD, CD-ROM) but monitor still remains blank (no BIOS screen). On external output (VGA or DP) there is pictrure, but it can not load any Windows (I have dualboot Windows 10 and WindowsXP). In Windows 10 shows error: VIDEO_TDR_FAILURE What failed: atikmpag.sys. In Windows XP, also blue screen with error in atikmpag.sys. So, I booted in SafeMode and remove Radeon HR6470M driver and put Standard VGA driver. Now PC boots to OS, but still only on external monitor. Tried to reinstall drivers, but it always fails with blank screen and PC freeze. With some many tries and restarts, in one moment notebook monitor starts to working again. But only up to next Windows restart.I tried to put new HDD in it and install fresh Windows...but same thing. Booted from live linux distro...only external monitor works. So, as I can see, external monitors on VGA or DP can work but only with generic VGA drivers. OS correctly recognize graphic card, but when driver is installed external monitor also goes blank and windows freezes (not responding on caps/num lock, no longer pingable on network). As in one moment internal monitor went back online it seams that maybe is some bad connections...but where...GPU or video memory? Also tried HP diagnostic... Hi All,
I have an external Envision flatscreen monitor that I have been using attached to my laptop for around a year. I have the monitor displaying on both laptop and the external Monitor. Just recently I had a pc issue which I have rectified and my external monitor since rectifying that issue now displays fuzzy. What can I troubleshoot to find out my issue. I've reviewed the Graphics and Display Properties. It is currently sitting at 1024 by 768, Color: True Color and Refresh 60HZ. The odd thing is that when I am in Display Properties, Settings tab, the left monitor in top is black (this should be my laptop) and the right monitor in the pic, which should be my external monitor is gr3y. When I have pressed on the black monitor, and press Identify it indicates 1. When I press on the grey monitor and press identify, it says it is not active, although I do have an image on my external monitor (fuzzy image). When I click the arrow on 'Extend my Windows Desktop this monitor' the right monitor then is black and when I press on it and press 'Identify' it says it is 1 as well. Is this correct. I know this has nothing to do with the fuzziness but still thought I might see if this is an issue or not.
When I right click on my desktop and go into Graphics Properties - I just get confused as to what this is all about. When I go into Display Tab the Monitor is checked, I can check on any of the others i.e. Notebook, Intel Dual display clone or Extended Desktop. Re... Read more

When my laptop is plugged into an external monitor, the laptop screen is the "primary" display, where programs automatically open, etc. Is there a way to make the primary display not the laptop screen but the external monitor screen? Here's the catch--is there a way to do it *without looking at the primary monitor*?

I have this strange request because my laptop's screen recently died. I have connected an external monitor, and so can still use the computer--more or less. The problem is that I can't see my start menu, etc--they are all on the laptop screen, ie, the dead one.

I know, normally, how to switch the display: I would right click on the desktop and select "personalize," then "display" But when I do this, it opens the display in the primary monitor (the broken laptop monitor) and I can't see it to change the settings. It's a sad catch 22.

If anyone could help me with this is would REALLY appreciate it. Thank you.

I have a Dell Latitude D610 laptop running XP Pro SP3.

In the past, I could plug an LCD monitor into the laptop's video port and either replicate or extend the desktop using the blue Fn and CRT/LCD keys.

Now I can't get an external monitor to work. I've tried two LCD monitors that work on other PC's, so I think the problem is in the D610.

The external monitor function stopped working when I was attempting to get an LCD monitor to work that had a different native resolution that the laptop was set to. I don't know if that was coincidence or I messed up some software settings or there was a hardware failure in the laptop . . . or something else.

Any advice or thoughts as to what I might do to get the external monitor going again? Or verify a hardware failure?

Thanks.

My external monitor works but it just recently started doing something weird. It might be the VGA Cable but I'm not sure. It's visible enough that if you compared my laptop screen towards my external screen you would see this like tiny tiny tiny tiny (emphasizing tiny) like white flickers. Some what moving up and down the screen. It's like almost if your VGA cable was just slightly not all the way in. I've wiggled the cabled replugged both ends. Turned my laptop off, the screen off. Reset the screen settings. Everything and I still see it. Is my VGA Cable going bad or my monitor?

If you really want to be sure either take the monitor to a repair shop and try with a cable there or get another cable, I would try the former though.

I'm not a expert/moderator/tech!

Have you tried opposite clicking in a open area of your desktop, clicking the properties button, then clicking the settings tab and tried changing your monitor configuration.

Also if this is not the fix (highly likely), try using your internet's search engine to search for how to connecting a external monitor to a laptop.

I am capable of connecting an external monitor to my notebook via VGA, however, the output is only the same as my notebook screen. The question I have is if I am able to have, for instance, 2 explorer windows open, one one my notebook monitor and another on the external, both having different information displayed. In other words, i want to be able to, for instance, surf the net with having one site on one monitor and another site on the other. I know i would have to have a video car capable of doing this and since my video car enables me to mirror the viewing on my notebook on the external would i need some type of software or would i just configure my computer differently.

I hope this makes sense and someone understands what i am asking. All input is appreciated. Thank you.

Your looking to have a dual screen capable setup, generally this is reserved for desktop computers. You would have to have either a laptop with a laptop pci/agp graphics port that also had the capability of dual screens OR you would need to find a pcmcia vga card that is specifically for dual screen output. I don't believe any such thing exists for a laptop but there is this

http://abcnews.go.com/sections/scitech/FutureTech/futuretech021227.html

thing

and also if you can find the place that makes

that they might have something capable of dual screen

Good Luck

When I connect my TV - as a monitor - to, for instance watch a DVD, I always need to select settings so that my display (laptop, Windows XP) changes it resolution. Causing all my icons to move all over the place.
It seems as if it HAS to do that - though I'm sure it can be done so that my laptop is left "intact" afterwards. I am probably just doing the wrong thing...
Any suggestions?

set the tv up as an extended desktop then when you change the resolution you are only change the output to the tv not your laptop screen!

extended desktop is selected from the display settings screen (right click desktop and select properties)

So, I have a laptop and a Lenovo Ideacentre, which is a standalone desktop.

The laptop screen is very small. However, the laptop's specs are waaay better than the Ideacentre.

How can I use the Ideacentre's monitor as a display for my laptop?

Should I buy a HDMI-to-HDMI cable?

A:Using a second PC as an external monitor?

If the monitor on the ideacentre has an input then you should be able to do that. You could use a VGA, DVI, or HDMI connector depending on what is available. If it does not have additional ports for input then you won't be able to do this.

The HDMI receptacle on the PC portion is for output.

I have 2 PCs connected to one monitor here. I can switch between them with an input button on the monitor. That would also be very important to have. Standard PC monitors have these. I'm not sure about All-In-Ones.

See the External monitor (Flat-Panel and CRT) troubleshooting solutions guide for more information.
Note: Using a resolution lower than the native resolution on flat panel monitors will cause distortion, loss of detail, and general blurriness.
See the Enabling TV-Out guide for using a TV or projector with the S-Video connection if available.
Connect a known good external monitor and press the Fn and F7 keys simultaneously to change the display mode.
Notes:The Presentation Director menu window may interfere with the functionality of the Fn and F7 keystroke.
There are generally three display mode settings to toggle through (LCD, CRT, and both).
Some ThinkPad models only support two display modes. CRT only or LCD only.

Verify the cabling and connections between the external CRT monitor and the ThinkPad system external monitor port.

Remove any signal cable extensions and switch boxes.
Note: Signal cable extensions and switch boxes are not supported.
Ensure the external display is setup and configured according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer.
Verify the external display passes any applicable self tests according to the instructions provided by the manufacturer.

I am using a Gateway NX560XL with XP Media Center Edition. When I extend the desktop to the secondary monitor (projector or the screen for my desktop) the only thing coming through the monitor is the screen saver. This featured worked previously, but has not since Gateway replaced the hard drive. I downloaded and installed new drivers, bit to no avail.

How can I resolve this?

I have an old all in one Hitachi Vision Desk 2600 series computer with Win2000Pro OS.

New tower computer uses a 21" external LCD monitor.

Have no trouble attaching old computer to new monitor as the Hitachi has an external VGA port, but both monitors are then on.

The Bios has only two display choices:
1. Auto - This makes both monitors work
2. Inboard - This makes only the small monitor work even though external is attached.

I want to turn off small monitor permanently and use only the large one. Is there any way to do this without opening the case and detaching the monitor (if this is even possible)?

Thanks

I have added an external monitor to my H?P laptop (Pavillion zd8000). When I play a DVD the laptop monitor shows information on the right side of the screen and my mouse pointer is also visible. The external monitor's screen is entirely taken up by the picture (lovely but) my mouse pointer is not visible and neither are the DVD controls on the right side of the monitors screen.

So basically i've been pulling my hair out over the past few days over a problem. My main monitor is broke (black running down 1/3 of the screen) but still useable. Anyway i have another monitor that i can use however it only has one slot for input. We'll call it input A.

The screen that is broke has input A and input B but the COMPUTER that i'm using only has output B.

I have no wires that are A to be, only B to B (what i'm using with my current monitor) and A to A so this is what i've tried:

Connecting one monitor literally to another but to no avail. It does say "in power save mode, please press any button on the keyboard" etc on the secondary monitor which is promising because at least it's connected however not recognized when i go to desktop: properties etc.

I know it's probably a lost cause but any help would be appreciated. Sorry if i made my post confusing, its hard to explain.
