BSOD? Removeable drive?

Q: BSOD? Removeable drive?

well it seems i have a removeable drive, and i've been having trouble with a 0x000000B8 BSOD, and i've been told one problem might be a added device, well i just noticed that i have this removable drive, that i dont really have, all i have is one hard drive, a cd-rom, and a floppy disk, i also have that 3 in 1 printer scanner thing, i think that the removable drive might be a problem but i dont know which drive is the removable one, i have my floppy and my cdrom in my disk drive section, then i have one called WDC WD102AA and one called HP psc 2175 USB Device, well my printer is a HP so i think the removable drive is the WDC one, but how do i know for sure? could it be my printer making this removable drive? the WDC is in location: location 0 (0) and the HP is in Location: on USB mass storage device, so if you guys could help me it would be appreicated, i'm going to run scan disk

Preferred Solution: BSOD? Removeable drive?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A few months ago I got enough advice on this site to successfully install a new hard drive to my E Machine...a small capacity drive that was a suggested replacement for the one that was "noisy" and had a really great number of defective sections...tho it was still working.

Prior to the new installation I was unable to hook up my camera/cables through the Camedia software and see it recognized on the old drive.

I did successfully install the new drive this morning...except for "STILL" not able to see my removeable drive "E" recognizewd, everything else works fine. I really felt I had accomplished something in getting the pc back workinf well...

Question, obviously, is "WHY" E drive, in the camera is not being recognized...the same cables and camera function perfectly on my new Dell pc. (?)

I have a NexStar CX external housing with a Toshiba MQ01ABD075 that a pull out of something. Slapped the 2 together an plugged it into a spare USB2 port on my laptop. Then is used DISKPART from a CMD window (running as Administrator) and after SELECTing the drive, I did a CLEAN and PARTITION making one partition on the drive. Then from DISK MANAGEMENT I did a Quick Format. I have also set the USB Device Properties Policy for Better Performance.

Every thing is fine, but the disk can NOT be EJECTed.

Using the Safely Remove Hardware FAILS because it says the device is NOT removable.

I have researched this issue and I am not the first to encounter it. I am looking for a definitive answer so please, no SWAGs.

A:External drive NOT Removeable

Well ... The Devices and Printers menu DOES have an Eject selection on the right click menu and it does work !

It would still be nice to Eject from Windows Explorer right click menu.

A friend has a recently purchased a cheap second hand PC and the HD is removable, sat in a tray at the front of the PC, with a handle for easy removal.

Unfortunately I don't know the spec etc at the moment, but my questions are:
Is it usually straightforward to fit a new HD into the existing tray?
Are HDs generally the same physical size?
Or might he need a new tray too?

He says the existing drive is easily removed and a jack plug at the rear of the drive simply clicks into place when it is put back in the bay.

It would be hugely useful to replace the existing 2 Gb HD and replace it with say, a 20Gb drive. Does this sound feasible?

A:Replacing a removeable hard drive

Yes, its feasible if the BIOS can see a drive of that size. But, I would love to have a unit like he has - it is designed/built for great flexibility. I would recommend he buy another tray for the new HDD. If he's only going to use one tray and/or one HDD why use the tray at all - just pull it out and mount the HDD permanently in the case.

Same physical size ? Yes ! These are what's referred to as form factors. There's 5.25 in. and 3.5 in. (width) and (I think) standard height and half-height. You should not have any problems in this area.

If it's a cheap second-hand PC as you say I would pull the "mountable" equipment to use in a higher-end system and just permanently mount the HDD in the lower-end box.

I have just started to use such things as removeable Disc Drives and Flash Drives...I have had an old 100mg Zip Drive permanently attached since I bought my computer in 2004, but now I've bought an HP laptop and realize that it's totally inadequate for transfering files and back-up. I have bought a 2G flash drive, which I love. Then, I bought a Seagate Free Agent-Go (80 G) which I hated with its confusing softwareit and I returned it and replaced it with a Data-To-Go by I/OMagic (809G)to transfer data. I like the Data-to-Go...no software, no mess...just a straight old drive.

Since there was no uninstall on the Seagate software I used add/remove to get rid of it. It all seemed to be gone, but now here's what MY COMPUTER looks like when I click on it:

Hard Drives: Local Disk (C

Devices with Removeable Storage: 3.5 Floppy (A; DVD Drive (D, CD-RW Drive (E; Removeable Disk (F; Zip 100 (G

Now, if I right click on (C or (F and click Properties, then Hardware, thy both highlight i.e point to WDC WD800BB-53DKAO, which I know is the number for my 80G hard drive.

If I click on (C, all my files come up. If I click on (F, it asks for a disk. If I plug the IOMAgic external and/or the flash drive into a USB port the drives will be designated (H and (I, depending on the order I did that. The IOMagic will go into the Hard Drive area of MY COMPUtER - the flash drive will show as a Removeable Disk.

I hope this has been explained well enough. Should I just ignore it. I&... Read more

I dunno where the "release me" icon went! Had this happen once before and had to do a clean re-install. I went to a restore point and got it back but only temporarily. It went away again. This might be related to recent patches from M$. Anyone know how to get it back? (I really need this because I OFTEN hook external drives to this computer to back them up and scan for viruses. Having to shut down each time is not practical.)

A:Lost my removeable drive icon in the systray

I have to admit that I never use it to release a USB storage device, and have never yet had a problem.

All it does is ensure that the "buffer is flushed" and that means all files are written, not still waiting to be written. Unless you were disconnecting almost immediately, or while the PC was still very busy it is unlikely to be a problem in XP, in my view?

I went for take ownership at security tab at their properties. But there was not security tab there. I formatted my pen drive with NTFS file system and found security tab. But no use. I cannot take ownership. I am getting these errors : “an error occurred while applying security information to: :F" and “access is denied”

I went in safe mode. Everything was accessible there. From safe mode, I tried to give permission to "administrators" including my user account, but same error occurred.

I just recently built a new system with Vista Home Premium x64. I have two hot swap hard drive trays that I installed with 750 GB sata hard drives. They do not show up in the "safely remove hardware" list but my hard drive containing Vista does. How do I set up the two hot swap trays so that I can swap hard drives while Vista is running?

A:using removeable hard drive trays with Vista Home Premium x64

since the disks are SATA, I don't think there will be a problem or any need to "safely remove" them first, before you can disconnect them or re-connect them.

If the disks are SATA powered (this means if the power cable giving power to the disks is the new SATA slim style, and not the regular 4-pins power cable) you should be able to plug them and unplug them JUST AS YOU WOULD with external USB disks. I've been doing this for years to SATA disks and even without trays. Just plug them on, plug them off.

If you're not sure though, just go to Device Manager, right click your hard disks, select properties, and in Policies tab, select "optimize for quick removal".

Upgraded a friends PC to Vista Business from XP, In My Computer it now shows his card reader's drive all seperatly and always visable. So for each SD card slot it now has its own drive letter.

My question is, is their something i can do to have these drives auto hide when no SD card is in a slot and only show when a card is plugged in? I do not want to disable/remove the drive letters permantly but i do not always need them showing.

Any thoughts?

BIOS: AMD 0401, 5/15/209 v 02.58

I have an IDE hard drive that slides in and out of the computer to connect / disconnect from the IDE cable.

When I had two internal hard drives it booted up using the correct C:\ regardless of whether the removeable hard drive was in or out.

I have now installed a third internal hard drive that contains the C:\ that it should boot from. One of the other drives has a mangled XP Pro OS that does not function well enough to use. So, I installed XP on the drive that I just installed.

Problem is that when I set the Boot Settings / hard disk drive to be the new hd, while the removeable drive is plugged in, it all works the way I want it to. However, if after having backed up to the removeable drive, I remove it for safe storage, the computer will then boot up from the wrong hd. When checking in the BIOS setup, I see that the Hard Disk Drive setting has been changed.

I just want it to stay with what I specified and not change things on its own. Is this possible?

I have a digital camera with Window's XP. Originally, when I turned the camera on, it would launch a wizard to transfer the files.

Lately (maybe since I installed SP1), it doesn't recognize the camera as picture files, but as a removable drive. I have changed this setting in the drive properties, but the setting won't stay so something must be overriding it.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the camera, but the same thing happens.

A new program called "safely remove hardware" might possibly be involved, but I can't find any settings there to change that might impact this. I'm not sure where this came from unless it was part of SP1.

Any help out there?

Hello Please be patient I know enough about computers but not the terms or anything. I had vista at first then got a virus long story short my uncle removed everything then put XP back on. I dont really understand why its important for a drive to be a certain letter my hard drive H the removeanle disk is C Im working from home and was told I need my internet explorer and certain things on my C drive. First off what is the difference and is this possible Ive been up for hours looking but I am not sure and cant get a hold of my uncle. Please let me know what needs to be done. Thank you all in advance.

A:How to make my to make my C which says removeable disk to my H drive?

It's easy to change the removable drive's drive letter name.

Start>Control Panel>Administrative Tools>Computer Management>Disk Managment

Right-click the removable drive's graph and select "Change Drive Letter and Paths" and change the letter.

Do not change the drive letter of your boot drive. If you do, none of your programs will work, your computer may not even boot, and you'll be reinstalling XP all over again.

The time to deal with the boot drive not being C: was before/during the installation. Now it's too late, unless you want to reinstall. It's inconvenient and annoying, but almost everything will work just fine. I've read about some programs not working, but have never seen it first-hand. It's possible it never happens, and the people that are saying this are just repeating some kind of "urban myth".

If you HAVE to change the boot drive, you'll need to reinstall XP.

Hi all! 1) Am I correct in understanding that the batteries on the P50 and P70 are removeable (and one doesn't have to use a screwdriver or remove a port to get to them). Are they similar to batteries of old where you slid a lever or two a pulled them out (like the T40's, only in a different spot)?2) Do either of them have that horrible thing known as an internal (attached) battery?  Internal batteries prevent one from sucessfully removing the battery to force a power-down. Thank you!

Can't speak to the P50 question but the P70 battery is easily removable by flipping a latch.  Early reports of non-removable batteries were incorrect and probably precipitated by Lenovo showing early, non-production prototypes at trade shows. No screws or Molex connectors, etc. are required.

Time for my 6 month Format and Re-install. Right now I think this might be impossible as drives like this have to be configured by the Bios on startup, am I right? Or is there a work around.

Hi and greetings to everyone,

I have bought a 1GB Thumbdrive (Brand: Pendrive) some time ago, and just yesterday I have finished using it after completin one of my projects. Everythin was working just fine.
However, this morning when I tried insertin my thumbdrive back into my PC, it had clearly showed that my thumbdrive cannot be read as it usually does, (The autoplay that comes out automatically). As such, I really hope someone could help me in this matter as I really need the resources that are being stored in that particular thumbdrive.
I have tried manually right clicking to see if i could autoplay it, instead it gives me the same old "please insert Removeable Disk ( L: )". It seems that my thumbdrive is merely dead because when i clicked properties on the L removeable disk, it shows that the memory space is 0GB, but its kinda weird as well cuz the light that usually flashes on my thumbdrive reacts the same. Im really hoping that this isn't due to the fact that I haven't safely removed my thumbdrive, as I usually don't.
I Hope that someone could really really help me in this matter, as my coursework etc r still being stored in that thumbdrive, and wuts worse, I havent backed any of them up. please help ..

Thanks a lot in advance,

My SATA fixed hard drives are in removeable bays ( drives C & D ). In XP, I could HOT-SWAP drive-D with no problem. Windows7 does not allow this. I'm using an older ASUS A8N-SLI MOBO, and there are NO Windows7 drivers for it, so this MAY be the root of the problem. Has anyone had success using removeable trays with Windows7???

A:SATA Removeable Tray

I have two trays that I use with both Windows 7 x86 and x64 but it is not Windows that is usually the problem. I have a Gigabyte board with an Intel ICH10R set up for RAID and two of the non RAID drivers are in the removable bays. With this contoller , the only issue I have is that there is no safe to remove capability natively so I use a program called Hotswap that works very well. If I use the other (JMicron) controller in ACHI mode then I get the safe to remove icon that occurs normally with Windows.

I want to put a removeable HDD rack into a new PC so that I can put other HDD's into my machine without the hassle of taking the top off etc.

I see one advertised as "hot swappable". To me this means I can put another HDD into the drive bay while the system is running and it will read the new drive. But also to me IDE means that a new drive must first be recognised in the BIOS which cannot be done without switching the machine off.

What is the apparent conflict?

Thanks for any ideas.

Iíve been banging my head against the wall due to a kindle touch/windows 7 issue.
Last week I had my computer re-imaged and now when I plug in the kindle via usb it doesnít show up under removable storage devices.
It does make the noise that you hear when plugging in a usb device, and I can see it under device manager, but not disk management.
Iíve tried to uninstall then reinstall kindle software, but when itís reinstalling it crashes by computer every time. I get the BSOD.
Iíve tried all of the simple troubleshooting I could think of. I thought giving it a file path under disk management might work but it isnít there. Iíve tried reinstalling usb drivers, using a different cable, resetting the kindle.
Oddly enough, my roommate has the exact same computer as me and we both got our computers reimaged at the same time and his kindle has the same problem.
I found a post from a user with a very similar problem:

She even has the same computer as I do. But hers was resolved by updating an unrelated driver (acronis) and Iíve searched my computer and donít see anything like that.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Went to use our Vista box, did updates and rebooted..for some reason I clicked "My Computer", think I was checking to see what game what was in DVD..when I did instead of showing what was in it, all I got was an odd icon..think of a white piece of paper with the top right corner folded forward and down with an old windows box inside it, lousy description I know. All of the icons for other removeable media had disappeared. I double clicked the icon for the DVD player/writer and nothing happened, so opened it, saw the title, went to Games, clicked it there and it opened and played so it is functional.I'm not certain what all other devices should show up (never used them) but from looking at the front of the box it has 4 "ports" with names such as

Strange - all of my hard drives, even my C drive, show up on the "Safely Remove Hardware" menu. They are correctly listed under "Hard Disk Drives", not "Devices with Removeable Storage", yet they still appear on the "Safely Remove" menu. I am not going to try ejecting the C drive for fun. How do I get the "Safely Remove" menu cleaned up? All drives are selected for "Better Performance" and "Enable Write Caching" on the Policies tab. I am using Windows 7 Pro 64.

A:All of my hard drives show as removeable

Hi, you need to use Optimize for quick removal instead of Better Performance.

Hi I am running windows 7 64 bit on a Copaq Presario CQ 62-219 Model #WQ778UA
I can not play cd dvd de nada.. it pops open drawer says insert readable media. please advise how to fix this. thanks

A:DVD wont work States as Removeable

Go to Start/Search and type devmgmt.msc, right click the devmgmt results and Run As Administrator. In the Elevated Device Manager, expand CD/DVD rom drives. Are there any yellow marks for your optical drives here? Or are they listed at all?
Try the Microsoft FixIt. CD-R drive or CD-RW drive is not recognized as a recordable device
If this fails, the laser diode that reads and writes CD/DVD's has failed and the drive needs to be replaced.

I've been getting error messages when I try to use this software called StorageCrypt. It works on one machine, but won't work on this one and their tech support says that it has to do with problem with my 2nd SATA HDD that I have installed in my PC. I have been trying to figure out any incompatibilities and I just realized that when I use the "safely Remove Hardware" icon in the system tray to detach my external HDD, it also lists my internal SATA HDD. I thought that this SATA drive would be considered a permanent internal HDD. The primary HDD is an IDE and the 2nd SATA HDD is connected to a PCI SATA card. Did I miss something when I installed it to make it read not as a removeable drive? I am only guessing that this may be related to my StorageCrypt error issues.

The Removeable Storage Service on one of our servers does not always start. It is set to start automatically, as it is on all of our servers, but on one server in particular, it does not start automatically.

Any ideas? We have searched the MS knowledge base with no luck.

Okay I really need help.
In my 'computer' - By that I mean the place where OS (:C) Is located and all - There is no more an option for removable media. Or removable storage. I run windows 7 home premium 64 bit.

So basicly no SD, Usb use to work. UNLESS I go to change driver letters and paths and then choose assign a letter and assign one but it only works for one time and then next time insert a different or same usb nothing happens. This is crazy. There is suppose to be a drop down bar in 'computer' but its just not there. Only hard drive disks drop down menu is there.
And I have a asus laptop. U50 F Series.

I tried to copy pictures from my camera SD card and when I plugged it in, nothing happened. There are 5 removeable media slots that used to be listed in My Computer and none of them are there now. If I put the SD card in the slot and re-boot it will appear and work properly, but none of the others show up. They are all listed in device manager under Disk Drives, but in Storage volumes, which ever ones were not plugged in when it was booted have a yellow exclamation mark. They all say "This device cannot start. (Code 10)."

I hate to reboot every time I want to use the slots, any ideas?

When this picture was taken, the SD card was inserted and working after the most recent boot. Otherwise there would have been 5 items in the list of yellow exclamation points. It will stay that way until the next boot.

A:My removeable media slots are not showing in My Computer.

Try removing them in Device Manager and then reboot

Hi there
on W2012 server if you don't enable "Desktop Experience" in the manage your server ==> add features then you get boot straight to desktop although you have the bland desktop screen -- you can add backgrounds etc.

I'm currently not on W8 but was just wondering if there was a similar option in control panel ==> turn windows features on or off.
If the desktop experience could be disabled then Metro would vanish at a stroke --not sure if it can be done on W8 though.

Does this feature exist on W8 anyone.

I might look into the "Hackability" of W2012 server -- most of W8's code is based on this anyway.

A:w8 desktop experience -- removeable or not - to kill metro

Had a look a look expanded all options but cant find any reference to desktop experience.
Do have a look, but those users who do not approve of the metro start window have in all probability installed classic shell the latest version takes you direct to the desktop
