Muffled sound in brand new laptop

Q: Muffled sound in brand new laptop

I just got my laptop on Wednesday, (yay,) but when I tried going on Youtube I noticed the sound is very muffled. I compared it to my old laptop and the sound was much better on the old one. Heck, the sound on my phone is better. The same thing happened when I switched to Windows 10 on my old laptop so I went to Microsoft support chat. They only told me to do the usual stuff I had already found in other searches. The sound is still muffled and very annoying to listen to because it's like something is covering my speakers. Can anyone help?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I just bought the Y50 yesterday with the GTX 960M. Unfortunatly i noticed while playing that the left speaker started to do a clicking noise, in addition the sound became muffled. When i tilt the laptop the problem is resolved i.e. the clicing stops and the sound returns to normal. After a few minutes the same problem returns until i tilt the laptop or lift it again.
Please help.

I did a full system recovery the other day because I was having problems with my cpu usage spiking to 100% when no programs were running. The reformat solved my cpu problem but now the sound is all messed up, it works but its so sharp and muffled and echoing kind of, and when I play cs 1.6 the guns sound so dense and muffled. I've tried everything from checking all the settings, making sure nothing is muted and making sure all the confirgurations are correct. I've installed driver after driver after driver but doesn't help. I've searched everywhere on the net but couldn't find a solution, I have broken my Icemat headphones over this becuase I got so mad that my sound don't work right and I can't seem to fix it. Some days ago I started noticing that the sound coming from my PC suffered from some kind of muffled distortion. I use earphones and theyre perfectly fine, since they work properly with any other device.

Windows 7 x64 (Completely updated according to automatic updates)
Realtek High Definition Audio

This kind of muffled sound occurs at random times in a video, song, etc, I honestly cant specify when does the distortion occur, its mainly a few times at random.

I connect my earphones to an audio entry in the volume and bass control wheel of my speakers and sub woofer.

What have I done recently that could have affected the sound?

-As I had said before, the earphones work perfectly fine, but the sound distortion occurs with all the earphones I have tried. So discard this.

-Recently I removed my speakers' cables which are connected to the sub-woofer, and the sound problem has started occuring closely to when I plugged them back again. This made me think that I messed up with the cables connected to my sound system, but unfortunately this isnt the problem, since when I connect my earphones to the PC tower audio entry, the muffled distortion occurs aswell.

Basically I must discard the effectof any peripherals and therefore believe that the problem revolves to the sound card

Not sure what help this might be, but keep it in mind while you troubleshoot:

If the audio entering an amplifier is too high, it will muffle. FOr ex: your computer sound is turned up, sending high amounts of ausio to powered-external speakers. those speakers will then have bad distortion, mostly at high olume points in the ausio track. (also sometimes at high bass points). try turning your pc volume quite low and see if the problem presents with standard, unamplified headphones directly connected to the pc. If this solves it then it is an amplifying problem almost guranteed.

Im having with w7 atm when i play music the sound is all muffled and screechy like its being amplified kinda like when you turn the equalizer up full. Ive gone through the sound settings but there arent any that i can see that would be causing the problem. The sound card shows up as Creative AudioPCI (ES1371,ES1373) (WDM) under device manager which is the drivers that installed automatically from windows update.

A:muffled sound

have you looked in control panel for the creative audio software, im not familiar with your sound card but it may have a settings panel in control panel.
,has this recently started happening have you installed any sound software recently and have you had an update that may have affected it?
if its a fairly recent thing then maybe a system restore to the point before it started happening will help.

Hey everyone. I just installed a new sound card (upgrade from O/B sound), when i play music like in Windows Media Player it sounds great. But when i play videos like on You tube its all muffled. What would cause this? Thanks.

A:Muffled Sound

It's probably just from the low bitrate used on online videos. The sound quality of those is bad because of it. If your sound is good with good audio files, then there's nothing wrong with your setup.

I've noticed that the sound on my HP dv7 laptop seems more muffled that it used to. I was trying to watch a video with the volume on low last night and I couldn't really make out what was being said. Usually this is fine.

Any ideas? - I checked the speaker drivers in control panel and apparently they are up to date and working okay.

I'm running win 7 RC by the way. Before that it was vista.

A:Sound Muffled

did this whappened when you started using W7? Drivers for audio on laptops almost always contain software that will enhance the quality of the sound produced by the speaker(s), a thing that can't be done with generic drivers.

I would go to Realtex and download the driver from their website. Microsoft's device drivers are generic the ones from the manufactures are better.

I just purchased a new notebook and when I turned it on there was no sound. Neither the speakers nor the headphone jack works. I tried using the troubleshooter, and it didn't find a problem. Initially, when I tried to select "test" for the speakers in the control panel it gave me an error message and said the device is already in use. After restarting, I am able to test the speakers, but no sound is emitted. During restart the speakers made a chime, so it doesn't seem to be a hardware issue.

Ok this is my first post on any tech help forum so my apologies if i miss out any key information.

Here's the problem, since purchasing my HP Pavillion dv7-1020ea laptop i have had intermittent problems with my speaker sound going muffled, quieter and losing all high tones. This is a continuous problem from the moment the computer starts and doesnt change.

My laptop runs vista 64 with IDT High Definition Audio codec and the drivers are up to date. I have tried enabling and disabling the device, it says it is working fine. Sound from my headphones works fine with none of the muffling. In the IDT control panel, the settings are set correctly, im not attempting to run surround sound or anything.

At first I thought it was a bad connection or something but suddenly the problem disappeared and never happened again for 6 months. But recently I reformatted my PC and as soon as my PC was running again the problem resurfaced. Restarting my PC sometimes fixes it but more often than not it doesn't.

Its very frustrating because I can't pin the source of the problem down. I dont think its a bad connection because it worked fine for 6 months and then when i reformatted it came back. I never experience crackling or jerky sound or short periods of good or bad sound. When i turn my PC on and it wrks, it works fine until my PC is turned off. The problem never just happens as im using my PC, it turns on with the problem, or it turns on without it.

Im having a problem which is driving me mad, muffled sound which makes speech (both in games and on youtube etc) completely inaudible. Just sounds like lots of bass and nothing much else.
I have a Foxconn G31mx motherboard which has built in Realtek audio running Windows 7 32bit. I have downloaded the latest Win7 drivers from both Foxconn and Realtek which has made no difference. I thought it may have somthing to do with a recently installed ATI 4850 gfx card as this has a HDMI port but looking at the installed playback devices all that is available is ''Speakers - Realtek high definition audio device'' which is set as enabled and default and ''Realtek digital output - Realtek high definition audio device'' which is disabled. I have tried every possible combination of enabling and dissabling the various options without success.
Any advice or help would be greatly recieved as my little girl is loosing the will to live not being able to play on Nick Juniour website lol.....
Many thanks in advance.

I am working on my neighbors computer. It's one I gave her, but I am always trying to get the best performance out of this old thing. It's a running a Mitac motherboard from a Compaq computer with a 500MHz processor, 253MB's of RAM, an ATI PCI video card and an AOpen PCI sound card.

I just reformatted and put Windows 2000 on there. It's a bit slow for the system, but W98 is so unstable and I had little success with that.

The installation went fine. I even updated the BIOS. Now it does have onboard audio, but disabled it, in one way or another, in the BIOS (It still shows up in device manager though for some reason, but that's now disabled)

I also ran into putting in possibly a hacked or virus-infected program on it and it, of course, screwed things up. Luckliy I was able to reload everything and get on with the installation of some other programs.

The problem is, that during start-up, the Windows start-up sound is slightly muffled. I tried putting in a different wave start-up, but it did the same thing. I'm pretty sure the problem isn't the sound card either, since I tested the wav in "Sounds and Multimedia" in Control Panel. It sounded fine there.

I also messed around with the advanced features in that category and changed things like hardware acceleration and such, but I really don't know what I'm doing there.

So it appears to me that the problem is in the startup boot sequence itself, right? Or what else could i... Read more

I have recently lost the sound on my Gateway laptop. However, when I checked the device manager it did not indicate any yellow! I have searched all the programs on my computer that have the capability to mute the overall sound, but it was to no avail. The last application that I had played sound on was a DivX player (a few days ago). My winamp bar levels indicate that the song is playing but I still have no sound.
My keyboard sound function(Fn Home) indicates that the sound level should be high.
I have contemplated reinstalling my soundcard but I do not want to lose my files on my computer. Norton Antivirus detected no viruses on my computer.
Does anyone know how I can get my sound back?

However, I do remember seeing "volume control serial XXX XXX" appear at the startup of my computer when it wanted to scan for errors.
Is there a master volume control that could unmute all applications?
Could I delete my sound card software and reinstall it to get it back?

According to everything under the device manager and volume controls everything is fine

thats all

I'm a noob when it comes to the computer world so bear with me. My laptop is about 3 years old and about a year ago, my sound started to get muffled and I couldn't hear voices when I played games. Whenever I move the earphones in the audio jack, I can sometimes pick up the voices, but I have to keep it steady of put a pillow under it to keep it like that. Is it just my computer? Or did something change?

A:Muffled Sound and can't hear talking.

Either the headphone jack is defective or the headphone plug. To determine which it is, use a different headphone (or the small earphones like are used on MP3 players) and see if that works properly. If it does then the jack in the PC is the problem. Unfortunately either the motherboard or a "daughter board" I/O board will have to be replaced. The jacks are enclosed and not (usually) repairable. The printed circuit boards are multi-layer and unless you have the special tools to work on a multi-layer circuit board you can't fix it yourself by replacing the jack.

One other outside possibility. A few PC's, but not all, have the option to reassign the jacks with a Sound Configuration panel. If yours has this, you MAY be able to make the "Line In" jack a headphone jack.

Hi Shay4383,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
You can first start to run diagnostics to check on the integrity of the internal parts. One in particular is the harddrive so it would be interesting to isolate what is the part that cause the noise.

This has been a problem for me for a few months now, but it's just getting unbearable.
So, here's the situation:Oftentimes, my headphones give out muffled audio. It makes it virtually impossible to make out human speech, and just generally isn't very good. In the past, I could fix this by adjusting the headphone jack somewhat, but over time I've had to do it more violently and I'm concerned at this point that I'll harm the computer if I continue doing it. Now, whenever it happens, I have to wiggle the jack around with a decent amount of force to get it to work properly.
I'm not particularly good with computer hardware, so I'm not entirely sure what the exact issue could be. If you need any more information, just ask. I'd be happy to provide it. Any help is appreciated.

I already tried contacting technical support, but I didn't get much help there, so maybe someone here can help. I have a brand new HP Pavilion g7-2270us laptop, and it makes an annoying click sound inside of it.  On average, I would say it makes this sound every 20 -30 seconds, but some times it does it more often or more spaced out.  It's just one click at a time, but it's irritating nonetheless.  I can't tell where it's coming from (sounds like the left side possibly), but I know it's not coming from the speakers and it's not from the disc drive (that makes a different sound). This is the second laptop of this model that I've had because the first one made this same noise.  I thought that returning it and getting a replacement would solve the problem, but this laptop is doing the same thing. Any ideas what this could be and what I could do to fix it?  Or is this a normal sound that I just need to get used to?

So can anyone help me or not?  I am already disappointed that when I contacted HP's "Technical Assistance", it was basically useless and was no help at all.  This is my first experience using HP, and after 2 HP laptops in a row making this noise and not getting any help to help me figure out what this noise is or how to stop it, I'm about ready to send this laptop back too and try another brand.

Hello. Test by switching to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager2. Expand the Sound, Video & Game Controllers section.3. Right click on the Realtek and select to uninstall.4. Put a check mark in the option to delete the driver software, and then ok.5. Restart the laptop and go back to the Device Manager and check again for a Realtek driver. Keep uninstalling & restarting until Realtek no longer appears under Sound...Controllers and "High Definition Audio Device" appears in its place. "High Definition Audio Device" is the name of the native driver.
[The reason you might have to go through the process more than once is because the driver files for more than one Realtek driver could be on the hard drive. When a Realtek driver is removed, the next one gets installed if Windows can locate the files. Windows installs its generic driver only after all Realtek files have been removed.]
6. At this point, test the audio while the native driver is installed and see if the same problem occurs.
7. When finished testing, download and install a fresh copy of the Realtek driver for your operating system. Get it from your Dell support page. Test the audio again
If the same problem occurs with both the Realtek and the native driver, then probably not a software issue.

I recently bought a PC with an MSI Z87-G55 motherboard. There is no sound card installed, but the motherboard has on-board sound integrated. I installed all the drivers, in Control Panel -> Device Manager everything is shown to be properly installed. Now check this out.

The volume mixer icon shows a red cross indicating that there is no sound. When I click on it, it asks to start the Windows Audio System. I click yes. Then it takes me to the audio mixer window, with my sound device listed in it. As soon as I click on ANYTHING in that window, the list is emptied and I get an error message that no sound device has been detected.

So, any suggestions?

PS. I CAN hear the windows startup music, but after that all sound is disabled automatically.

Hello everyone!

I got my new computer yesterday and I'm not getting any sound through it at all.

It's a Knight Series Gamemax computer on Windows 7 with brand new speakers.

I'm not getting any sound at all, and I need help please!

The speakers are mains powered with a jack connection that is plugged into the motherboard. They came with no disc or anything and when I looked up the make and model (Logitech Z130) it says no drivers are needed.

All of my drivers are installed and updated.

I've looked in sound settings etc but my knowledge only goes so far and I have no idea what to do, but by the looks of it it's trying to use one of my monitors for sound output when they have no speakers on them and it won't let me change the settings.

I have two monitors; monitor 1 (HDMI connected) is the one it's trying to use for sound output and monitor 2 is VGA connected.

The speakers work as I tested them on my phone.

Speakers: http://www.tesco.com/direct/logitec...-black/428-5294.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=428-5294

Any ideas please? I miss my music and Netflix & games aren't the same on mute!

I'm a layman, so please apologise if this all seems very low level to you.

I've bought the following product online from PC World:

Windows Vista (64bit) Home Premium

No sound comes out of this machine. Went through all checks suggested on Vista help, also tried speakers, but only (!) headphones with in/out plug work.

Running a check with a downloaded programme brought the following needed updates:

- ATI Radeon 3100 Graphics
- Realtec RTL8169/8110 Family PCi Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.0)
- Realtec High Definition Audio (although running the check on 'help' the outcome was it's up-to-date)

Yesterday, I bought a pair of Samson Studio GT studio monitors. which connect to my computer via USB. However, I'm only getting sound out of one monitor/speaker, that would be the right side with the power cable. I've checked the speaker wires and made sure they were hooked up correctly for polarity. There are no drivers for these speakers on SamsonTech.com. Windows sees everything correctly, as these speakers have a built in audio interface for audio production, which is what I do.
This is definitely not an issue with the speakers, because I managed to hook up my computer to the speakers'/monitors' aux RCA inputs and got sound out of BOTH speakers! What is most interesting is that headphone output from from the SPEAKERS/MONITORS functions the same in both cases. (One case with audio out the right speaker, the other case with audio out of both). However, these speakers (I'm just going to call them that from now on) have two headphone outputs. When hooked up via USB, and when listening on headphones, the phone output to the right only outputs right channel audio, and the left only outputs left channel audio. But when hooked up via the RCA inputs, both headphone outs put out as stereo.
I suspect there is something within my Windows 8 installation that's screwy. I can use these via the RCA inputs coming from my PC's sound card, but I would like to get this working via USB, as mentioned earlier, these speakers have an built in audio interface that I want ... Read more

A:New brand USB speakers. sound from one speaker only on USB

I have a studio using Sonar X2 and have Samson Resolv 6.5a studio monitors (they are not USB).

I notice in the manual these have a mono and stereo mode. Have you tried that or checked to see if they are set for stereo.

As they work with the Analog input, that does not say everything is working. The USB interface and associated internal electronics could have a problem.

One more thing to try. Connect the speakers and then go to the Device Manager. The speakers should be listed, probably in the Sound Video and Game Controllers section (most likely place). RIGHT click on the entry for the speakers to highlight them, then LEFT click "Uninstall". Then physically disconnect the speakers from the PC, restart the PC and after Windows starts connect them and Windows should detect "new hardware" and install them. If there were some type of system corruption this will fix that.

Last, try them on a different PC (doesn't have to be a Win 8, could be a Win 7 PC) and see if the work OK on that system or if you have the same problems. There are many different USB PC speakers available today and Win 7/8 is set up to handle them.

Hello you guys have helped me out before and hopefully you guys can figure out this little ditty of a problem.

My Girlfriends sister just got a brand new compac presario V5201US Labtop. She has had it for maybe a week or so and when she plays any type of music, (from cd,mp3 ,or streaming auido) it skips and pops, and is very unpleasant.

We have tried to talk to the tech help at compac but they gave us the run around about improving the virtural memory of the device and then closed the talk. we tried that (xp now looks like 2k) but we still have the same problems. I thought it was the sound drivers but im no techie. Do you guys have any ideas?

Not sure if this is the right forum, but since I can't locate the error, I start out here.
Bought a new computer 2 months ago, but I have a weird problem that I haven't been able to locate a fix for. The problem was bigger when I first received the computer, so I ended up returning it to the producer, and got the graphics card replaced. I got my computer back a few days ago, and sadly the problem remains (however in a smaller scale, and not so frequently), so I turn to you guys for help.

At random intervals the sound will get twisted and start lagging, and the overall performance of the computer will drop massively. The performance get so bad that I can't drag the mouse pointer over the screen without it lagging. This will happen when I surf the web, and often in combination with streaming videos or listening to music.

The problem I'm facing is that I can't locate the reason for the problem. For example I can play the new Dragon Age Inquisition on Ultra settings for hours at a time, with no problem. But sometimes I open Dragon Age, and the lag is so bad I just have to turn off the computer. At the same time I can stream videos, surf the web and play music for hours one day, while the next day streaming a video will be impossible because of the lag.

The problem occur on all browsers (Firefox, Opera, chrome), and on all streaming sites (youtube, live streams and so on). I have tried to disable almost all background programs (like skype, steam... Read more

A:Weird performance/sound issues on a brand new PC

as they have already replaced a part on the PC - i would take it back and see what they have to say

if you have all the latest drivers installed on the machine and its still a problem , i would return it personally, as they already must have thought there was an issue to replace the graphics card

I bought a brand new Ideapad 320S last week and today I noticed a strange buzzing sound which seems to be comng from the bottom of the laptop. The buzzing sound occurs roughly every 5 seconds and seems to stop when the fan starts to run. The sound comes back when the fan stops. After some time it changes to a grinding sound. Laptop was only bought last week... Can someone please give some advice on this? thanks

So I'm trying to get an external microphone (on a headset) working on my recently bought HP laptop (it's the Star Wars LE here), last night I was testing my headset but there is a really loud buzzing sound even when there's absolutely no interference in the room.

I've tried updating all drivers and even went and bought a new headset today for $40, so its definitely not the headset. In control panel I don't have Realtek Audio Manager (I did on my old laptop), but I have this "B & O Play" software which is a basic alternative. I've tried messing with those settings to no avail.

My older headset is one which has green and pink jacks, so I have a splitter for those, but my new headset has a combo jack so it connects directly.

Here's the weird part though, control panel > sound, whenever I talk into the mic on the headset, it actually comes through the "headphones" under sound:

But in recording, the microphone (which is seems to come through) doesn't have any kind of noise level, but if I disable it, the mic on the headset stops.

(The other mic available is the built in one for the camera).

So I've pretty much run out of ideas and really don't want to have to spend anymore money to do such a basic thing as use my headset on my new laptop, anything else I can do?

A:Buzzing sound through brand new headset (and other headsets)

I'm guessing there's no fix then? Makes no sense how it doesn't just work out of the box since it has a combo jack with a picture of a headset, did HP not even test it?

The sound on my new laptop intermittently crackles and distorts during mp3 playback. I have reinstalled the sound driver, tried many different sets of speakers and tried both Winamp and Windows Media Player, but the problem still persists. I contacted Dell support but they were no help. Their grand solution was for me to reinstall Windows, which--forgive my ignorance if I am wrong--sounds like a ridiculous idea. Besides, they did not even include a Windows reinstall disc with my shipment. My sound card is listed as "SigmaTel High Definition Audio CODEC." Can someone please suggest the next course of action for me? Should I just send it back to Dell to replace my sound card? Or are there configuration options which would resolve this problem?
