No sound from speakers, red cross on speaker icon

Q: No sound from speakers, red cross on speaker icon

Help!! I have a new (ish) laptop and everything has been fine until a couple of days ago when a red cross appeared on the speaker icon. I've run the diagnostic tool by clicking on the icon but only my Bose wireless headphones appear in the list, and the tool is unable to resolve the probem with the speakers. When I use the Bose wireless headphones, the red cross goes and the headphones work fine. I've tried the Device Manager too to clear the red cross issue, but cannot find a way for it to help resolve the problem. The laptop doesn't have any sound from the speakers, nothing. If I plug normal/ regular headphones into the jack, then the Bang & Olufsen message appears on the screen to notify that the headphones have been connected, but there is no sound from the headphones and the cross remains on the speaker icon. If I hover over the red cross then a message appears "no speakers or headphones are plugged in"

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello @George73, Before we go to the software part of this red x volume icon we will first have to check if your hardware is operating in the necessary parameters. Move the mouse pointer over the lower right side of the screen for the ?Charms? bar to open.Left click or tap on the ?Settings? feature you have in the charms bar. In the search box you are presented in the ?Settings? feature you need to write ?Device Manager?. After the search is finished you will need to left click or tap on the ?Device Manager? icon. If you are prompted by a window you will need to type in the administrator account and password to go further with the steps below. Double click (left click) on the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature in the device manager window. In the expanded menu in the ?Sound, video and game controllers? feature look to see if you have there a sound card and if it is properly installed. Note: if it is not properly installed you will see a yellow sign next to it or you won?t have a sound card present in that menu. If you have a yellow sign next to the sound card you will need to left click on that icon. Left click on the ?Properties? feature after you clicked on the sound card. Left click or tap on the ?General? tab you have in the properties window. You will have a box under the ?Device status? feature and you will see in that box what exactly the issue with the sound card is. Note: In most of the cases you will need to update the sound card driver . The volume control won't display.

I have an MSI 785GTM-E45 Mother Board. I have no sound coming from the speakers. Tried new speakers and still no sound. If I click on the speaker Icon on the bottom right it shows the speaker graph going up and down as sound is being produced. I tried the head phones and nothing coming from them either. I tried playing a CD and nothing from there either. I first noticed it when I was trying to play something from YOUTUBE and thought it might just be the site but then I tried off line as well. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium. This is the first day that I have noticed it. Thanks for any help. I have checked all the settings I can think of but probably have missed something somewhere.

A:No sound from speakers but showing sound graph on speaker control

Go to the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound and finally the Sound Panel. In the Playback section, set your "Speakers" as the Default Playback device (if it's not now set). Then see if you have speaker and/or headphone sound.

Windows 7 32-bit won't play sound.

Device Manager\Sound, video and game controllers\High Definition Audio Device ok.
Double click and window says:
High Definition Audio Device Properties\General: Device status says This device is working properly.

Speakers are plugged in and make a crackle when plugging in to correct holes.

Mystery?

A:Sound/Mixer icon has red cross. No Audio Output Device is installed.

If it's shown as "working properly" in the Device Manager, the speaker icon you have can also be because the sound is muted.

You show "High Definition Audio Device" rather than the actual sound device which suggests you have the generic Windows/Microsoft installed sound driver rather than the actual sound driver from the motherboard vendor. In many cases the generic Windows driver does not work or work correctly.

You can try and uninstall/reinstall by RIGHT clicking on the entry for the sound and then LEFT click "Uninstall" (DO NOT check the box to uninstall the drivers) then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall the sound. This fixes a lot of flakey problems.

If the uninstall/reinstall does not fix it, the next step is to get the correct sound drivers and install them.

Yesterday, I bought a pair of Samson Studio GT studio monitors. which connect to my computer via USB. However, I'm only getting sound out of one monitor/speaker, that would be the right side with the power cable. I've checked the speaker wires and made sure they were hooked up correctly for polarity. There are no drivers for these speakers on SamsonTech.com. Windows sees everything correctly, as these speakers have a built in audio interface for audio production, which is what I do.
This is definitely not an issue with the speakers, because I managed to hook up my computer to the speakers'/monitors' aux RCA inputs and got sound out of BOTH speakers! What is most interesting is that headphone output from from the SPEAKERS/MONITORS functions the same in both cases. (One case with audio out the right speaker, the other case with audio out of both). However, these speakers (I'm just going to call them that from now on) have two headphone outputs. When hooked up via USB, and when listening on headphones, the phone output to the right only outputs right channel audio, and the left only outputs left channel audio. But when hooked up via the RCA inputs, both headphone outs put out as stereo.
I suspect there is something within my Windows 8 installation that's screwy. I can use these via the RCA inputs coming from my PC's sound card, but I would like to get this working via USB, as mentioned earlier, these speakers have an built in audio interface that I want ... Read more

A:New brand USB speakers. sound from one speaker only on USB

I have a studio using Sonar X2 and have Samson Resolv 6.5a studio monitors (they are not USB).

I notice in the manual these have a mono and stereo mode. Have you tried that or checked to see if they are set for stereo.

As they work with the Analog input, that does not say everything is working. The USB interface and associated internal electronics could have a problem.

One more thing to try. Connect the speakers and then go to the Device Manager. The speakers should be listed, probably in the Sound Video and Game Controllers section (most likely place). RIGHT click on the entry for the speakers to highlight them, then LEFT click "Uninstall". Then physically disconnect the speakers from the PC, restart the PC and after Windows starts connect them and Windows should detect "new hardware" and install them. If there were some type of system corruption this will fix that.

Last, try them on a different PC (doesn't have to be a Win 8, could be a Win 7 PC) and see if the work OK on that system or if you have the same problems. There are many different USB PC speakers available today and Win 7/8 is set up to handle them.

I have got a Toshiba Portege M400 laptop, there only the left speaker works on it. I've tried going into properties making sure the right speaker is unmuted and made sure both speakers are balanced but still no sound from the right speaker. When i actually test my speakers, where you would expect there to be one sound coming from the left speaker, then that stops then there should be another sound in the right speaker shortly after, i get BOTH sounds coming from the left speaker. I get a loud tone the first time, then a quieter tone but still audible again in the left speaker. So my assumption is that the sound that is supposed to come from the right speaker is in the left aswel. This causes problems when i play my music because instead of sharing the sound between the two speakers, they are both being played through just the left speaker which causes crackling in sound and distortion.
Ive tested the sound when i put headphones in, and both the left and right ear speaker works, just not when i try and play from the inbuilt speakers.
I have a SgmaTel HD Audio CODEC, Vista SP2 , any help would be appreciated

A:Sound from both speakers coming from one speaker only

If only speaker is working on your laptop, it is possible that the right speaker itself on your laptop could already be failing and needs to be repaired. Since you tested the sound by using a headphones and the left and right works properly that means there is no problem with the driver. So my suggestion is send your laptop for repair and have the right speaker replaced.

I have no sound as of this afternoon. Also, my speaker icon has disappeared.... and when I try and access my volume control through Start/Programs/Entertainment/Volume Control NOTHING happens, nothing at all.

Someone suggested a driver problem. In my device manager, there is a yellow mark next to what I think is my sound card. When I try and update the driver, it says that it is already installed and I then reinstall it.

This is very confusing. Is there any site that will scan my PC for drivers needing updating at no cost? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks DAVID

So the two speakers I use for my computer are not completely working. When plugged into my computer, the main speaker with the controls and stuff gives out sound but the other speaker doesn't.

I tried plugging the speakers instead into my phone and both speakers had sound coming out, so I thought it's probably the audio jack on the computer that is the problem.

Is there any way to maybe replace the jack or use the other jacks on the computer for the speakers?

Hi Questionerer,

Seen as though you have tested with your mobile phone and sound IS coming out of your two speakers, it is safe to say that the speaker is not at fault.

I think that your computer is outputting sound panned right, in other words its only sending the audio information to the left side speaker.

To help you with this problem and to eliminate any driver problems please can you do the following:
Go to: Start > Type: msconfig.exe - Press Enter
Go to the tab 'Boot'
Bottom of the window there are check-boxes, tick the one called 'Boot log'
Press Apply/OK
Shutdown the PC
Wait 10 seconds
Turn on PC
Go to - C:\Windows and find a file called ntbtlog.txt
Upload this file to this thread

After a recent power outage, when I booted my computer up again (HP Pavilion 750n), there was no sound and the speaker icon did not appear in the systray like it usually does. I tried to troubleshoot with my limited computer abilities by looking the the Sounds and Audio Devices>Hardware>Properties. The only thing that it said wasn't working properly was the Intel® 82801 BA/BAM AC'97 Audio Controller. The message was "This device cannot start (Code 10)".

I don't have any disks for this computer (running Windows XP as an OS). When I called the local computer tech and explained this, he said that I was lucky if that was all that was wrong and he refused to help me because my computer was so old. He doubted that he could get a replacement board or card of it had become fried. I wanted to know if this is more likely a driver or a sound card problem, what can I do about it (if anything) and could the power outage have caused it? Looking on the internet most suggestion for this problem is to re-install the driver or do a system restore. I don't have any disks for my computer since I bought is as a used tower. If it is a driver or hardware problem, would doing a system restore help?

I'm having a really baffling problem with my laptop resulting in no sound whatsoever. The sound icon shows a red 'x', and in my audio playback devices in the Sound Manager - none appear except a TV I connect by HDMI (my on-board microphone has also gone AWOL). I downloaded new drivers to no avail, performed a system restore, ditto, and the Acer support team are advising resetting the machine to factory settings, which I am loathe to do if I'm unconvinced it would work.

(The speakers are internal, so I've not simply forgotten to plug them in).

I've noticed a few similar problems on this page, does anyone have any solutions? It might be a hardware problem as an attempt to plug in headphones didn't help (although the headphones themselves made a 'feedback noise as they normally do when plugged in to a silent device') .

Any ideas?

Dear all,

I am in dire need of help to fix my laptop sound card. My laptop (TOSHIBA M600 on windows vista basic as its original operating system) has been working perfectly for the last 3 yrs. Just about 3 weeks ago the the volume icon on the bottom right hand corner of the screen had a red cross marked on it. I am no longer able to listen to online lectures, music, videos etc. I opened the device manager and found no such things as Sound, video and game controllers. This happened after one of my friend installed a faked windows 7. Since then i decided to buy and re-installed a legal window 7 professional, but the problem persists. The volume icon at the bottom of the screen still has a red cross on it.

Some kind people out there please help me...i am a student and cannot afford it to be fixed by those expensive computer genius in the computer store. Also....please use simple lay people english when you give instructions or help.

Thank you so much in advance

Hi buddy,

Usually such a red cross means that there is a no sound driver installed or driver is muddled up? Have you already tried to reinstall the sound driver?

What sound card you have installed?
Normally you can get all drivers on official Toshiba website but for an older model like yours I could imagine that you must check other pages. For example if you have a Realtek sound card, check the Realtek page directly: www.realtek.com

On the odd occasion when I lose connectivity, it's only to the Internet so my icon just shows a yellow triangle with the exclamation mark superimposed on it. Fortunately, my router automatically reconnects if this happens, so I'm not down for more than about a minute.

As your board is based on the NVidia nForce 570 SLI MCP, you could try to see if these drivers might help (make sure that you create a restore point prior to installing) NVIDIA DRIVERS 15.53 WHQL

Hi guys, just reinstalled windows 7. everything works great, then I went to paly a file and to my surprise, no sound. Tested speakers on another device, they work. Sound card drivers are working and up to date.

When I play a media file, I can see the sound gage go. So I went in sounds, playback device, and all I see in there is my sound card, no speakers or headphones icon. Thus no sounds from speakers. Tried other headphones/speakers they also dont work on the PC.

First two screenshots are my Device Manager, third one shows my playback devices.. My wife needs this for her business and I am losing sleep over this for days now I tried everything. Any ideas?

Hi -

What sound card do you have?

Double-click on the HD audio device in Device Manager - what is driver and date?

Usually there is an audio codec/ drivers, e.g., IDT, Realtek, etc... that must be installed.

What are system specs - exact model number from label on back of PC, please.

Regards. . .

A:why does the icon of my computer (drive c) is changing to a red cross symbol?

Save HJTInstall.exe to your desktop.
Doubleclick on the HJTInstall.exe icon on your desktop.
By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
Click on Install.
It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
Once installed, it will launch Hijackthis.
Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" to copy the entire contents of the log.
Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I can't access Internet, the Wireless icon on toolbar has a red cross trough it. The device IS enabled. When I check the device and run Troubleshoot it tells me it is working properly. The computer is new to me, it looks like it has been configured to access
the internet via another computer. I have tried to reset the computer to its default settings vis System Restore but it will only allow me to go back a year and then crashes just over halfway through the restore.
The computer is a Gateway Laptop MOD 7320GZ + Windows XP Prof Version 2002 Service Pack 2 + Broadcom 802.11g Network Adapter
Any advice? As you can guess I'm a novice.

Hello,

My Dell-VOSTRO laptop is kinda in a weird situation now with spyware, and hopefully someone can help me fix this. It's been bugging me for the past 3 days. The problem is on desktop bottom right corner, where the volume icon and msn icon are, there is always a round red icon with white cross pops up something like this:

"Your computer is infected!

Windows has detected spyware infection!

It is recommended to use special antispyware tools to pervent data loss. Windows will now download and install the most up-to-date antispyware for you.

Click here to protect your comupter from spyware!"

I know this is a spyare spam try to trick you to install their program and not a real windows warning, so I haven't clicked it yet. but I just can't get rid of it. I've tried quite a few things, but nothing works.

There is also a weird thing is that I can't run HijackThis on this laptop, I even renamed it to "Fumble" as someone previous suggested, but it still won't work. Once you double click on the icon, nothing happens. Therefore, I don't really have a HJT log to post. I did follow the steps to run a Panda virus scan and attached the log. Hope it helps in some degrees.

Someone, please help me on this to get rid of that red round icon with the white cross spyware or let me know what need to be disabled to get HiJackThis running to produce a log for you guys.

Thanks a lot in advance!

A:Trojan/Spyware infected! [Red icon with white cross appear on task bar] Please help!

Just want to give an update, I think the trojan or spyware not only disabled HijackThis to run, it does the same thing for other anti-virus software as well. Kaspersky and Windows Defender neither will start now on my laptop. I tried safe mode too, no luck! I guess online scan is the only way to scan it, which I attached the log in the first post, Please help......guys!

Thanks ahead!!!

Hello, I am new to this Forum.

My Wireless Network Signal Strength Icon is currently displaying a red cross as per this Screen Shot:

Despite the incorrect icon display, my Local Wireless Network is functioning perfectly.

How can I restore the Icon to display rising bars?

Assistance will be gratefully accepted, thanks.

That's the icon for your wired network, not your wireless.

I have a new quick launch icon on the taskbar. It is a red circle with a white cross. There are also pop-up dialog boxes associated with this new icon. These include, "Click here to protect your computer from spyware!" and "Attention! system detected a potential hazard (TrojanSPM/LX) on your computer that may infect executable files. You private information and and PC safety is at risk. To get rid of unwanted spyware and keep your computer safe you need to update your current security software. I am running the following:
Windows XP Media Center Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 on a Dell XPS DXP051. Intel Pentium D CPU 3.00 GHz, 2.00 GB of RAM

At this point, I have disconnected my computer from the internet and have tried to do a "repair" on the OS using the Windows installation CD. Then, I restarted and the red circle/white cross icon was still there. Next, I performed a Trend Micro HijackThis-v2.0.2, and saved the log file. I am currently working off my laptop to troubleshoot this virus/malware. Please help me solve this problem. Thank you.

Can i do this from Windows 8? I've heard there might be a 2 second delay! Thanks

A:Bluetooth speaker and speakers simultaneously?

Windows will only allow one default playback device. If the Bluetooth is set as the default audio playback device, that is all you will get. There MAY be some third party application that allows more than one, but I don't know of any.

Hello,
I have a fresh install on my PC and for some reason it doesn't detect my headphones,
I've plugged them in the front and rear and still no luck, all drivers and software are up to date,
any idea what's happening?

They did use to work before the fresh install.

A:Red cross on sound

Open device manager and see if you have any devices needing a driver update.

I cant get these things to work together I think I just dunno what Im doing..

Installed my PCI card and setup my speakers and plugged em in etc.. Installed the drivers for 7.1 sound as the instructions suggested for me to do, even though my speakers are actually 5.1 (Logitech X-530) wonder if thats whats wrong...anyway

now my woofer works and so do my front two speakers but my other 3 are left out..what to do?

Thanks all!

A:Chaintech AV710 Sound Card and Logitech 5.1 Speakers: only 2 speakers work

I'd say install the 5.1 drivers and be sure the speakers are plugged into the correct ports
