Residual File Names in Save/Save As Dialog Boxes

Q: Residual File Names in Save/Save As Dialog Boxes

With regard to clearing lists of [recently opened and/or saved] file names in Windows file dialog boxes, Orbital Shark had described the following procedure (from his 01 Nov., '10 post-) How to Clear This Dialog Box ? :

"If you want to selectively clear the Common Dialog file names MRU, you need to delete these two registry keys manually:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ LastVisitedPidlMRU

HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ ComDlg32 \ OpenSavePidlMRU"

My question is as follows (and it is probably a silly one, therefore please bear with me and thank you):

Is the prescribed procedure to delete the *actual keys* ("LastVisitedPidlMRU" & "OpenSavePidlMRU"), or instead to delete the *contents* of those keys? i.e.: Should I select/highlight the key within the left panel of the Regisgtry Editor, and then select delete; or should I select/highlight the key within the left panel, and then select/highlight in the right panel all the contents of that respective key, and then delete all those contents (not the actual key itself) indicated in the right panel?

Thanks much for your patience and for your help! Win

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

When I tried saving in Microsoft Word, no save box would appear for me to enter file-name and location. I tried on other Microsoft Office and none of them would allow me to browse files with Save/Open dialogs either. I even tried other non-Microsoft products and some of (although not all of them) had the same problem where no Save/Open dialog would appear when I requested it.

The programs I tested which did show me a Save/Open dialog were: Paint.Net, Notepad

The programs I tested which did not show me a Save/Open dialog were: Notepad++; All Microsoft Office; Visual Studio 2008; Google Chrome; iTunes.

If anyone has any idea how I could fix this, as it leaves many of the programs which it affects unusable, I would much appreciate any support.

Okay, having a really annoying problem in all my Office Applications. I am running Office 2002 on Windows XP machine and lately whenever I go to Save a file, Open a file, Insert a file - pretty much anything that pops up that dialog box, it takes forever to respond when I click the drop down list to pick my drive/folder. By forever I mean ~20 seconds. I have 13 networked drives so I don't know whether it is an Office issue or a network issue but I need to find a way to fix it. It's only recently that I've had this problem although I've had the networked drives for quite some time.

If I open windows explorer and browse my files that way, I have no lag and no problems.

Any ideas?

Hi,
In previous Windows versions I always saved new items and downloads on the desktop or in folders in desktop.

However, with Windows 7 the option to save to Desktop is not as straightforward as before.

When using Save as... it always appears in the Libraries folder.

Before the Desktop, among other default save to locations appeared as big icons to the left of the dialog window but now it feels annoying to even access the Desktop as a save location.

I know I probably sound very lazy and so but I want the old feature to go back. I dont have any option to downgrade to Windows XP or anything so I have to stick with this annoying feature.

Since my primary language is Swedish the dialog winows might look different but I provide at least some screenshots here.

Ok, I have the full version of Avast Internet Security, Malewarebytes, and Super Antispyware, and none of them could pick this up. Sometimes when I click on search results it brings up a save as dialog box with misc. save names already filled in. I can close it out and click on the same thing again and sometimes it works fine. It doesn't happen every time, just once in awhile. And also, I can't get it to happen in Internet Explorer, only Google Chrome. A couple of times it even happened when I clicked the search button in chrome. It came up with a save as dialog box and had "search" as the file name.

Hi all

Just a stupid little problem with W7 I noticed which is VERY confusing but simple to fix.

I changed via the dialog the TEXT SIZE via the screen resolution in the control panel to CUSTOM SIZE.

With one of the newer "Cinema" or Very Wide screen (1680 X 900) displays after I'd increased the text size to over 160 % I didn't get the possibility to SAVE any documents any more via the SAVE AS button. The SAVE dialog would appear but the SAVE button was missing.

The effect was noticed in Office 2007 (all programs) Notepad etc etc.

Seems to be a Windows fault as this should not be allowed to happen.

on more traditional "Squarer" type monitors -- no problem.

I couldn't find the answer by googling but a bit of "trial and Error" fixed the problem.

I have tried clicking on DETAILS then on the NAME heading and it comes back to the right order but next time I open a dialog box it is back to reverse order!

I have also tried right click in the dialog box and select Arrange Icons > By Name

I have tried both the above with and without CTRL being held down

It happens in all types of programs, not just MS ones.

hello all, newbie here being driven to distraction by a fault that has manifested itself with the Open/save/Common dialog box.

In all programs I use - Chrome/IE11 and OpenOffice. when I wish to open or save a file the dialog box is does the following:

opens BUT without "save as file type" OR without the Explorer Tree. It seems to open a random storage file within C. The lack of either the file tree or the file type/location field makes it impossible to speficy where to save the file to. In 'open' it makes it impossible to find the file for emailing and because it opens random folders saving the file into that file is not an option.

any ideas? As a business and work tool without this function working the laptop is essentially useless.

I often attach files to outlook which are hosted on network drives. I typically like to add a UNC instead of the old-fashioned drive letter.

When I go to the attach or insert file dialog, I want to quickly navigate to one of several preferred server directories.

Is there any way I can add one of these directories to the left side of the dialog so that I can click on it directly? (I tried dragging the folder icon but that doesn't work.)

I've googled and not found any solution so far. (This is somewhat trivial in both Dolphin and Nautilus.)

I am running a fresh install of Windows 8.1 Pro 64 bit on a new computer. There seems to be a flaw in Windows 8.1 that randomly flares up when interacting with a "Save As" or "Open" file dialog. Most of the time it works fine, sometimes with a delay, and other times it just hangs the application. Windows is still running and I can do other things except do any file dialog in any application.

Furthermore, I try to kill the process in task manager and I get the message that I don't have permissions to kill the process. I am logged in as administrator. Running task manager as administrator does no good. Trying to restart the computer also does no good as Windows will hang on "Restarting". The only option at that point is the crash the entire system by powering off. Once powered on it seems to work just fine.

I do have mapped network drives but they all show "green" on Explorer. I've seen others having a similar problem, so I'd have to think this is a serious bug in Windows.

Has anyone found a solution to this?

Thanks

Dale

A:Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit save as or open file dialog freezes

I had Outlook hang trying to save an email attachment. Could not kill the process and received message "Error terminating process. Access denied.". While this was happening, I tried to save a file in Adobe Acrobat only to have it hang as well. It would appear that once one app hangs any other app trying to bring up the file dialog will hang.

I had only 2 mapped network drives and both were showing "green". Just experimenting, I removed the 2 network mapped drives while the app was hanging. After about 15 seconds, the apps freed up and the "Save Attachment" dialog popped up on both hung apps.

Now I consider this to be a bug. But to get Microsoft to admit that will be a herculaneum effort. This behavior did not happen on Windows 7. Does anyone know of a setting that can be changed to prevent Windows from trying to open every drive I have attached to the computer every time I open or save a file?

Hi,
Four days ago, suddenly file list pane disappeared when I try to save a document. At first file list was absent only when printing file to a PDF but now I'm not able to see file list pane in any of the saves in any document. I had updated Acrobat X when I had received an automatic update and I suspect that is when that happened so today I removed Acrobat X and problem did not go away so I made a fresh install of the version that was working for me but the problem still persists. I now have to type the name of the file I want to save while before I would select an existing file from the list and then modify the name slightly to reflect the version number. I have shown this problem to a few techies and they are stumped. I have tried to search for this problem but have not found a solution either.
Thanks,

Welcome to Windows Seven Forums.

I would imagine the simplest solution would be a system restore to a point before you downloaded and installed the Acrobat update, and then keep any eye out for any updates you're offered before they are downloaded.

I have searched up and down and around the web for a fix for this with no luck.
Hope I am posting this in the correct place..

Whenever I request a "File|Open" or "File|Save" from any application, the
mini-Windows-Explorer dialog box that opens freezes and hangs the entire
application. Happens with almost all applications. Not limited to just Microsoft programs.
It does not matter if I like change the download folder or if I rt click always the same.

Back when it was under warranty Hp tells me to just restore to original settings. I hate to do that. But I am about to see that this might be the only fix for it. (But I am hoping not.)

I think it started a long time ago when I was changing the USB ports I used for my external Hard drive and it changed drive letter. (maybe maybe not.. just seems I remember that being something that had happened when I first recall things hanging...) anyway I have all drives in the place I want them now and this issue still happens even if I dont have that external drive plugged in.

If I need to post more info please just let me know.
Thanks so much.
Appreciate the help...

Hi,

My PC has problem displaying flash drive icons correctly in file open and file save dialog boxes.

On my Dell Inspiron, there are 4 flash drives (Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, and xD/SM). The 4 drives' icons display fine from Windows Explorer but all 4 drive icons are missing in File Open and File Save dialog boxes. The problem exists in every application's file open and file save that I checked so I'm thinking it's a problem with Vista and not with specific application.

I'm running Vista x64 Home Premium.

Has anyone else encounter this problem? Does anyone have a solution for fixing these missing icons?

In any application under Win XP, when I use a Save As or Open dialog box, and click the down arrow next to the location box to search for the folder I want, the application never responds. Usually, I have to click the arrow a couple of times and then it sort of wakes up and responds, or the application crashes (the title bar of the dialog box will say "Not Responding".

Often, in the case of the Save As dialog, it won't say Save As in the upper left corner, only an "S" will appear there.

Seems like a memory issue or else something corrupt in the system. Before I shell out $35 to MS to have them fix something that shouldn't be broken, can anyone help???

are grayed out from making changes in that window.

Any thoughts?

One of my user is having this problem on her Windows XP PC:

Dell GX260 with Windows XP Professional running 512MB RAM, Office XP, Acrobat 5.0

When opening a Word file & edited in Word XP, the user cannot SAVE or use SAVE AS the file, when try to exit out the file, get prompt to either SAVE, CLOSE, or CANCEL the file, at that point it will still not save the file, the only way to exit the file is to hit CLOSE to exit.

I initially thought this might be a Word Xp problem, so I ran the repair tool in Office XP, that did not fix it.

I then uninstalled Office XP, reinstalled Office XP, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then ran the Office update to download the latest patches from MicroSoft, but that also did not fix the problem.

I then UNINSTALLED Acrobat 5.0 from the PC, that FIXED the problem.

WITHOUT Acrobat 5.0 on her PC, the user was now able to open & edit a Word file, and able to SAVE the edited file, also able use SAVE AS to save the file as a new copy.

I then reinstalled Acrobat 5.0 thinking the previous copy of Acrobat 5.0 on the PC might be corrupted, as soon as Acrobat 5.0 was back on the PC, the same problem with the SAVE feature came back in Word XP.

I then installed the patch update for Acrobat 5.0, that did not fix the problem.

At this point, I am out of clues on how to fix it....The user tried Acrobat 6.0 before on the same PC, but decided to reverse back to Acrobat 5.0 because of format problem with 6.0.......so Acrobat 6.0 is no... Read more

Firstly, my employee's are running into a problem where they cant save their files because the file is "in use" according to windows 7.

What i've narrowed it down to is the fact that windows uses the files to display details or even a preview of the file whether it be a thumbnail or a window pane preview of the file or even simple details barring it from saving the file after it is opened, edited, and ready to be saved.

I have disabled all the obvious frills that might be conflicting such as: "file previews, show thumbnails etc." just cant quite get this resolved.

Also, windows 7 and its short term memory loss wont allow some of my employees to save their favorite folder views (I understand that windows 7 tried to implement a more functional window mode, allowing users to have multiple view for their different folders) but the "pick one and stick with it option" of "Apply to all folders" the obvious approach doesnt work. Or merely works for a few days then reverts. I've seen regedits about changing the "bag size" and such but that looks a little more involved than i want to get with the registry, also potentially affecting something in the process.

Any tips?

Hi,

Previous suggestions for removing residual file names from "Save/Save As" dialog boxes involve deleting the following two keys from Registry (complete paths/strings omitted from this thread inquiry):

"LastVisitedPidlMRU", and

"OpenSavePidlMRU"

I noticed though that, in addition to those two keys in that Registry location, there is another & similar key entitled "LastVisitedPidlMRULegacy".

1) Is it advisable to also delete that third "...Legacy" key as well, and if not, why not?

2) What is the function of that third "...Legacy" key?

3) What would removing it do, or not do?

Thanks a bunch, Win

Hello readers,

I was wondering whether there is a way to tweak IE6 so that the default web page saving scope is a Dragnet-style "just-the-HTML-facts, ma'am," rather than the complete page with all the graphics from the advertisers etc.

I dislike manually having to override the default prewired into the product every time I want to save HTML ONLY.

Thanks for your help!

The only way I have seen, is to completely disable the save as web page complete. It will then default to save as web page, html only. But the save as webpage complete is missing altogether.

Open up regedit.

Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Infodelivery\Restrictions

Create a new dwrod value with the name NoBrowserSaveWebComplete

Double click the NoBrowserSaveWebComplete and set the value data to 1

Whenever I save something on Win 7 with the standard "Save" dialog (such as used by Firefox or Microsoft Word), the filename is still there in the drop-down list for others to see. Where is that list stored? A search with RegEdit does NOT match any of the filenames listed there (I even do a partial search without case sensitivity, to no avail) so I don't know where they're being stored. It's very puzzling.

Where I work, we still support the latest version of IE 11, since a sizeable portion of our customers still run it.
So we have a bunch of tests for downloading files that are blocked due to internet explorer 11 throwing up the download dialog asking whether to open, save, cancel etc... The dialog is the little narrow one at the bottom of the browser window.
I have tried various things like
unchecking "Notify me when my downloads are complete.", but that doesn't work with the latest versions of IE 11.
Our testing for IE 11 has taken a nosedive because of this issue.

I have XP pro and it's a new (2 weeks) installation that i maintain well. But i have this problem that manifests itself in a couple ways. In my audio editor, cool edit pro, when i save any file the save dialog box takes 10-25 seconds to appear.
The other problem happens with cool edit, but also with some other programs. When i try to drop down the "save in" field at the top of the dialog box to choose a destination for the file, it freezes for about 5-10 seconds before finally dropping down. This happens in notepad especially. In fact, it may be that it is a problem with notepad and that the reason it affects other programs is that when saving in them maybe it changes an ini file or something, which of course is done with notepad.

In any case, thats just conjecture. But i'm desperite for a fix because formatting in my situation will lead to literally 10 hours of re-configuration. so far i have tried a re-install over itself, run SFC about 10 times, downloaded all the updates, scandisk, defrag, done virus and spyware scans, run a few registry cleaners and other pc fix programs, un-installed and re-installed cool edit, and a lot more i can't even think of right now. It seems to be something like a corrupt shell, but i would think the re-install would have fixed that.

Please, if you have any suggestions i'm listening......Help !!!

I have had some problems with the save/load dialog not to mention the font and colour picker ones

The save/load screen just don't appear as they did... the only mention is on Notepad when it says "Not enough memory"

I might of accidentally shut a process down when I was closing iTunes one time...
I have tried a system restore to before when the problem started but that failed to cure the problem (and cause several others but I fixed them)
Can anyone help my problem?

When I go to Save as on any program that uses the special locations pane on the save as dialog The "My Documents" does not appear. I tried to use TweakUI to try to trick it to reset the register settings, but it doesn't appear to have helped. I think it's only one login profile that seems to be affected. Could there be something missing in the "Run" setting in the windows/current version key?

A:Save As Dialog problem

not sure but -
open regedit
go to
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User Shell Folders]
On the right side is there a key named Personal with a value of
%USERPROFILE%\My Documents ?

gee im stumped - been googling for some time- no clue-
weird - i never paid any attention to those icons in the save as window.
if it's only one profile- try deleting and recreating that profile maybe?

I have a Wndows 7 laptop with Acrobat 9 installed.  When I open the Save As dialog box, it opens in full screen mode (I have no idea how I accidentally did that, and now it defaults to that every time).
I can't figure out any way to change the default back to its normal size.  HELPMike Schumann

A:Un-Maximize Save As Dialog Box

With the "Save" dialog box open, click in the top left-hand corner of the window on the title bar, just to the left of where it says "Save".  (or you can simply press Alt-Spacebar).  A little menu will pop up, giving you the option to "Restore"
or "Minimize" or "Close" the window.  Choose Restore.
Hopefully all your "Save as" dialogs will open in Restored mode after that.
