T440p: M2 2242 SSD support

Q: T440p: M2 2242 SSD support

Hello forum, my goal is to find the best possible M2 SSD for a T440p TinkPad to use it as a system disc (OS and apps). I am going to run Win10 and Linux Mint on it. From what I have researched, the T440p can only hold 2242 cards in the WWAN slot. I am not sure about the next points. - Is there a limitation concerning max. capacity for a M2 SSD for a T440p? (max. 256GB?) - Which interface does the T440p support? (SATA III, PCIe 3.0 x4, NVMe 1.3) - Are there other limitations I have to consider before buying a SSD for a T440p? Can you please share your thoughts? Thank you and best regards

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Planning to buy Toshiba RC100 2242 nvme SSD , but not sure if x240 supports m.2 nvme SSD.

A:does x240 support m.2 2242 nvme SSD?

x240 supports up to two m.2 2242 SSDs, but with SATA interface, not a PCIe NVME one the RC100 has. So, x240 doesn't support RC100.

Hi. I've just received my T460s and a Transcend 2242 512GB SSD card, but unfortunatelly this ThinkPad doesn't detect the SSD at all. I'm disappointed because I was sure I read somewhere that it was technically possible to do that on the WWAN M2 slot, but now there are other reports telling it's not working. My question is: is this a hardware limitation or is it possible that a BIOS update can enable SSD support on the 2242 slot? This would be ideal to me so that I can have Windows 10 and Linux with dual boot, without sacrificing storage. Thank you.

I have a T440p with Windows 10 Pro and have no problem with Wake on LAN (WoL) with an ethernet cord plugged, but have been unable to get Wake on Wireless LAN (WoWLAN) to work. It has the Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 which does support WoWLAN and I've got the appropriate settings for the wireless adapter selected.  When I posted on the Intel board, they said that WoWLAN support is also dependent on support from the motherboard and suggested I check with Lenovo. Has anyone had any success getting WoWLAN to work?

I just bought a second SSD (Transcend 256GB MTS400 M2 2242) for my Lenovo T480 but it is not recognized in the BIOS nor Windows. The laptop came with a 512 GB M2 2280 SSD. When I plug the same SSD in my old E540, it works straight away. The old 16GB SDD from the E540 also does not work in the T480. I read this was also an issue with the T470 until a BIOS upgrade. Did anybody have the same issue or could Lenovo check this issue?

Hello and welcome,

The SSD you list is a SATA device.  The WWAN/SSD slot is described in the base spec as PCIe - and doesn't mention SATA.  It may be that SATA devices are not supported in that slot.

The P52s has a small M.2 2242 port.  I wasted money on Intel optane to be placed in this port and want to change this for an NVME drive. From what I have read this slot will not work with Sata SSD's, you have to use a 2242 NVME SSD. So far I can only find 512gb NVME drives in the 2242 form factor. Is this the largest option? Also, please correct me if I am wrong but I have read that you can only use NVME PCI based SSD's on this port, If I can in fact use a sata ssd in the 2242 form factor, that would be great. I just want to add a 1TB drive.

I would like to install a 1TB SSD into the unused WWAN slot of my P52. Is that possible? This would, BTW, be in addition to three other intalled SSD drives (one in the 2.5 bay and two in the M.2 NVMe 2280 slots.) I purchased a Dogfish SSD M.2 2242 1TB, and it fits into the WWAN slot (and lights up). But so far, after a high dozen reboots, I cannot get the laptop to recognize it. It does not show up in ?disk management? or ?Samsung Magician?. Is this installation possible, or simply incompatible? Can the P52 recognize four drives? Does it require a BIOS reconfiguration? And, if so, what would I need to do? Thanks, in advance, for any advice that you can provide. -FRANK (Baertracks)

I don't have one to try, but there is a slot for a WWAN card or a 2242 M.2 SSD that is easy to access.  Remove the big cover and it is visible.  If you lay the machine down with the memory slots and the HDD toward you, it is above the HDD, to the left of the CPU.  The other thinkpads of that generation (T440, T540, W540) will all boot fine from the drive.

My T480 came with the standard 512GB NVMe SSD in-a-caddy. I'd need some more storage so am attempting to tweak the laptop, putting in 2 SSD into the 2.5" space. Here's my plan: M.2 2280 NVMe/SATA
-> Proprietary connector (F) on the motherboard
-> Proprietary connector (M) 00UR495
-> SATA-600 (F) 00UR495
-> M.2(NGFF) SATA KEY B+M SSD to SATA Adapter card
-> Crucial MX500 M.2 Type 2280 SSD

M.2 2242 NVMe slot
-> NGFF M.2 PCIe M-Key extension card with 20CM cable
-> Lenovo SSD M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe 512GB OPAL 2.0 SSD M.2 2280 Samsung (FRU 00UP490)I thought of extending the M.2 2242 NVMe slot with an extender card but turns out it doesn't fit. These are the two pieces I'd like to connect by an extender card: Motherboard: Lenovo T480 M.2 B-key (NVMe only x4 slot, x2 physically wired)https://imgur.com/rutbx72--> The 6 pins on the bottom (only 5 physically wired) suggest to me that this is a B key M.2 slot.NVMe SSD:Lenovo NVMe SSD M-key (PCIe GEN3 x4 NVMe)https://imgur.com/dI1AyRq The extender card I had attempted early, but that doesn't fit the M.2 2242 NVMe slot:http://eshop.sintech.cn/storage-adapter-ngff-m2-pcie-c-130_137.html Am I correct to conclude that the M.2 2242 NVMe slot is B key? Hi, So I have an X270 with a 256gb SSD. I have been wanting to upgrade memory and the drive and ordered in what I thought was the correct path: 16gb SODIMM and a 2.5" Samsung EVO SSD. If I understand the terminology,  after opening the unit it appears that the boot drive is PCIe NVME 2280 mounted into a caddy placed in the 2.5" drive slot. So from other reading, it appears that I have some limited options. I had assumed that the boot drive was in the 2242 slot, and that I would just stick this new Samsung into the 2.5" slot and be done. But that caddy to the 2280 drive does not have a similar cable connector to my Samsung EVO 860 I purchased.  The questions I have are: am I locked into the 2280 drive form factor in my configuration? Presumably this means that I return my Evo 860 (or stick it in another machine in the house) and by a larger 2280 drive and do a restore from media? Any advantage/pros/cons to this versus adding 2242 on top of the existingIt appears that there is a much smaller range of manufacturers and sizes for 2242 drives (and apparently some Transcend units don't work?) but I could just bite the bullet and install a secondary 2242 drive in the WWAN slot and call it a day?On a secondary issue: is it possible to install a lighted keyboard into an X270 that has previously not had one? Hello,I know we have to choose between either:- storing a second SSD, of type this time 2242, rather than thick sataIII or NVME 2282 initial one.- keeping the ability (if we configured the laptop like this) to connect through sim card 4g LTE. But I was wondering, since I read the SSD type 2242 of several brands were using some only 2 out of 4 connectors (idk much about it), hence reducing the consumption compared to a classic faster NVME2282 plugged in the main dedicated area,would it be a way to overlap the fibocom 4g board AND the ssd m2 2242 into the same plug? I don't care if I have to do some risky iron solderings, just want to know if it was possible, should some electronics/hardware guy fell on that thread... Also, does someone know whether the fingerprint reader sensor has some linux drivers? What about the NFC card reader ? I have a T470. I took out the main sata ssd drive from the main drive bay. There is nothing in there. That is the way I want it. I put a Lexar NM520 M.2 2242 512GB NVMe Solid-State Drive in the WWAN port. I imaged that drive. I can boot to it. I don't know exactly how as it is not listed in the bios as a boot device, but it does boot to it. I assume it has something to do with it being NVMe and not SATA in the WWAN port. My problem is that before it boots to the WWAN m.2 NVMe drive it produces a boot error for the main drive missing. The error states MAIN DRIVE not found, esc to continue. Which requires me to push the escape button to continue booting. That is a problem for me. Is there any way to disable this main drive check? I know there is no main drive in that bay, obviously. I called lenovo consumer support and it was like talking to someone who had never heard of a computer before. Very frustrating.

A:T470 m.2 2242 Nvme WWAN as primary OS boot drive - error from missing main drive

That slot is specified as SATA with no mention of NVMe support.  It's surprising (to me...) that it boots.  I'd be concerned that some future BIOS update would remove the ability to boot.

My _guess_ is that a SATA drive would solve the error - but that's just a guess.  I have a bootable SATA m.2 drive in my T25 - which shares  the internals with the T470.  It's in the shop at the moment.  I may need to open it and will try to run a test when I can - but can't say when that might be.

Hi, I've been using my Thinkpad T440p for only few months, When I plug in the charger, battery doesn't charge and doesn't show anything (as if the charger is not plugged in at all). - The charger itself is working.- If i removed the battery and botted the laptop with cahrger plugged in it works.- if the laptop is off and i plugged in the charger the battery will charge.- Whenever I plug in the charger while on battery, the power light blinks but without charging. I've tried to uninstall ACPI Power driver and didn't work, I've tried to update BIOS and it isn't possible as the update require both the battery and charger to be connected which is not possible. Please help

A:Motherboards for t440p

Hi,

I don't have any direct experience with this but using your FRU numbers and The Google to cross to the 04X numbers listed here:  https://download.lenovo.com/parts/ThinkPad/t440p_fru_list_20140217.pdf

It looks like the differences are license (8 STD or PRO), AMT, and TPM.
