Dell Venue 10 Win 8.1 updates cause Secure Boot Error

Q: Dell Venue 10 Win 8.1 updates cause Secure Boot Error

This has happened on two Venue 10 tablets after the most recent group of "optional" updates. Rebooting after installation causes a Secure Boot error. The fix is to access the bios setup using a keyboard, turn off Secure Boot, reboot and go through the BitLocker recovery routine. The updates are KB3087137, KB3087041, KB3087390, KB3073874, KB2999226, KB3084905. KB3080042, KB3080800, KB3082353. I have no idea which cause the problem. Dell Support says that Secure Boot Off is supposed to be the default condition. Either one of these updates turned it On or it was always On and the update triggered the error.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Dell Venue 10 Win 8.1 updates cause Secure Boot Error

I have the same problem with a Dell Venue 8 Pro running Win 8.1. This had been working just fine and the only thing installed recently were the updates you mentioned. I tried doing a system restore to before the updates, but it didn't make any difference. Just get a red box saying Secure Boot Violation - Invalid Signature Detected. Turning Secure Boot off in the BIOS is a workaround, but because device encryption was enabled (it's enabled by default when you sign in with a Microsoft account) it then prompted for the BitLocker recovery key on every cold bootup. Entering a 48 digit key every time is a pain, so for now I have disabled encryption.

I think Dell are mistaken if they say Secure Boot Off is the default condition. It was definitely On already on mine.

I do notice the device boots up quite a bit quicker with the encryption disabled. I will probably just run it the way it is (secure boot and encryption disabled) but does anyone know how to fix this properly? Would a full reset from the recovery partition put things back?

Hi,
Thank you for writing to us!
We would suggest you to update the Display and chipset drivers to the latest .
This could either be a hardware or a software issue,If the driver update is complete and if still have an issue then it could be a hardware issue .
Connect an external display to check if the same happens .

Hello all,
I own an Asus laptop with pre-installed Windows 8.1 and, after downloading & installing recent Windows updates (20th of September 2014, if memory serves me correctly), I am unable to access desktop because system freezes at boot sequence returning me this error: "Secure Boot Violation. Invalid signature detected. Check Secure Boot Policy in Setup" printed inside a small red box.

After googling around, someone suggested to disable "Secure Boot" from BIOS and enable "Launch CSM". I performed such operations but I got no results (BIOS menu automatically appears after every reboot). Someone else suggested to change boot sequence and start system from a Recovery CD but I got no CD supplied with my laptop as Asus stopped providing CDs from very long time AFAIK.

I am quite sure problem relies on Windows Updates because I used this Laptop very little times and no p2p or hacked programs are installed. In addition to that, as far as I read, it seems other Win users experienced the same issue after installing WinUpdates but they have different BIOS so is not easy for me to understand my BIOS accordingly to what they do in their own BIOS in order to solve issue.

What annoys me most is that I bought this Laptop in July 2014 and, just three months later, it got freezes because of official Windows Updates and not because of bad behaviour of user.

Thank you all for reading.
I appreciate your help very much.

Hi All
I bought my daughter a Dell Venue 11 Pro in September last year with a 2 year warranty.  When I receoved it, I checked the service tag here:
And confirmed the warranty.  Now there is a fault with the device and I've just checked the warranty status again, but get the following info:
Warranty details for your Venue 7140 Pro

Service Tag: XXXXXXXShip date: January 01, 0001Country: Unknown

No information available.

Can anyone help with this?  The problem is that when I turn it on, it buzzes, shows the Dell Logo, displays a progress indicator then up comes the rolling dots in a circle, where it just stays there.

Hey guys, I have a question before it is too late to return my tablet. I have a 64 gb Venue and it is intel atom bay trail processor. I was playing Far Cry 2, and had to alt-tab out to use my trainer program. It stalled a few times alt-tabbing, and I had to go to Start, Switch Users with windows 8 a few times to log out and come back in and restart the game.

Anyways, after alt-tabbing too much, I must have hiccuped the pc and the heat was too much, and it shut off from overheating. I panicked and let it cool for a while, but first I turned it on and ran HWMonitor. I will upload a screen, but it shows a temperature of 191 degree Celsius which is outrageous. This thing was very very hot, it took ten minutes or so and it still felt a little hot.

Anyways, also, from the sleep state, I tried to log in and when I typed my correct password, it said there was not enough resources to log in another user. I tried and after the third time it logged me in. Is this resource problem because of the heat and things were acting funny, or is it because I went to Start, Switch User a couple times to un freeze my game from alt-tabbing.

The tablet works fine, but that 191 degrees bothers me. I played Far Cry 2 for a half hour just now, with the trainer, and all was fine.

Should I return it because it overheated and had the error logging in, or are these known issues? I have another week to consider keeping this. I know the thermal shut off is designed to prevent damage, b... Read more

A:Dell Venue 8 Pro tablet question

by the way, this screen shot is from today, not when I overheated it. for some reason, the 191 goes away and comes back. if i reset values or shut down, it always still comes back to 191, so it can be an error with HWMonitor. I used this screen to show the 191, but the time it overheated, the processors were much hotter.

This screenshot if after a half hour of playing Far Cry 2, so that is what these temps are from.

We are experiencing an issue with the Dell 9030 AIO and Secure Boot. We have a custom Windows 10 image that when deployed with secure boot disabled, works as expected. The issue begins when we enable Secure Boot in the BIOS of the machine. When the machine is restarted, it looks as if Windows is restarting then hangs on a black screen forcing us to power cycle the machine. We turn Secure Boot back off, we will see one normal restart. All consecutive restarts after that will hang on the black screen again like it did with Secure Boot enabled. This is a domain joined machine recieving the same GPO's as a Dell Optiplex 9020 and a Dell Optiplex 7440 AIO which are not experiencing the same issues as the 9030. Both other models have Secure Boot enabled. We have searched high and low, adjusted just about everything in the book to try and resolve this issue but we have not been successful. The only thing that seems to resolve the issue is reimaging the machine with Secure Boot disabled and leaving it disabled.

Hi,
We have a Venue 5130 Venue Pro tablet.  Its about a year out of warranty.  I noticed recently that the battery pack had expanded and was expanded from the tablet casing so it wouldn't shut.  I bought a replacement battery (not cheap) but only not started researching what the problem might have been and I can see that other people have had issues with their tables.  The old battery pack has expanded to a worrying extent - and since removal appears to have expanded further.
Advice online seems to be to NOT try recycle this and to treat it carefully as its unstable.  Not sure what to do it with so?   If the battery packs are liable to being unstable how can they be installed in tablets to begin with.  Reading online it would appear that there are issues with such batteries if they are overcharged.  I don't know if that was the problem in my case.  All I know is the batter packy is swollen up to an unreal extent.  See Photo below.
Another problem is Dell Customer Support doesn't appear to be contactable in a tangible way after the 12 month service period is up.  Negotiating the Dell website looking for a way to talk to a human about the problem is frustrating as everything leads to dead-end options, particularly at the weekend.  Not happy with Dell hardware and not happy so far with Dell service
A dissatisfied customer,
Mick

A:Dell Venue Tablet Swollen Battery

Most computer shops and most municipal solid waste sites will take back swollen batteries for disposal.   It isn't uncommon for lithium ion batteries to swell when their end of life approaches, just as ordinary alkalines will leak if they're left in a device when they've been used up.  Don't puncture the swollen battery - simply send it off for recycling with a location that can deal with disposing of it.

I would like to say I have been dinking around with Dell PC's for many years, use to purchase "dead" Dell laptops off of eBay and fixed them down to replacing chips on the motherboard.. I got involved in this forums as a result of a scripting question, while trying to create a program that would run a single script instead of having to run several, or even remember the commands... That single script now runs the Partitions, setup, recovery, wimboot images scripts perfectly and the project was uploaded in the Setup and Installation Forum..

Well now I am into tablets and wimboot images and system recovery on 16GB-32GB drives..

The interesting thing I found out about Dell Tablets is the amount of wasted drive space that is allocated to the UEFI Partitions

So in regards to Dell Tablets - I have one suggestion - even on brand new purchases

Go into Control panel - Recovery - Create Recovery drive and create a recovery usb

Then boot from that usb and reset the partitions and re-write the windows image...

Not only does Dell over allocate partition space and size - it writes a production folder that contains the images that are then copied to the other partitions, so you end up with more then twice the needed file size. PBR_ does away with the un-needed folder and can gain you about 6GB of space on a 32GB drive.. that's a 20% gain in usable disk space

We are trying use secure boot with a Dell 9030 All in One and a custom windows 10 deployment. We have successfully imaged multiple machines without secure enabled and have not seen any issues. When secure boot is enabled, the machine will freeze at a black screen when rebooting.
When we go back and disable secure boot, the machine will reboot once as expected and then revert back to freezing on the black screen during additional restarts of the machine. The only way we've been able to get the machine to start performing normally is re-imaging the machine without secure boot enabled.
We have searched high and low, changed just about every configuration we can think of in the BIOS to attempt to resolve this issue but none have yielded results.
Has anyone seen any issues similar to this or have any suggestions about something we might be overlooking?

Folks:

Dell Venue 8 5830 Pro cameras are not working.
I have installed the Windows 10 Anniversary version twice but I cannot get the cameras to work at all. For the installation, I have managed to use an external USB flash drive to upgrade with no Internet updates during the process. After several boots later, the tablet appears to be OK except for the camera app. I have looked and checked there is no problems in the Device Manager. (I should have wrote down the error number, I was using the tablet to check for the errors)The error led me to the following website:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...art-the-camera
It was suggesting that my antivirus might be at fault. I went ahead and disabled the antivirus to test this suggestion, but the result is still the same, no cameras. During this install, I tried to update the drivers under Image and under Sound. It did not work and after several attempts, I did screw something up and the sound was not working at all. I tried to reinstall the sound drivers but to no avail. Therefore, I restored the previous backup. A few days later, tried to install the Anniversary version for the 2nd time. This time, I added the registry hack for the 32-bit fix from what was floating around online, and tried the camera program but Windows kept on saying cameras cannot be found with the long error code that takes me to previous microsoft web site regarding how to troubleshoot problem areas. I have it working in Windows 10 before. Therefore,... Read more

A:Dell M6700 Nvidia Quadro K4000M No display After Secure Boot

So i managed to solve the problem.
There are issues with K4000m running in secure boot. You must not disable legacy boot rom.
If you have no display at all here is the painful solution:
Make sure you can open the notebook and put it back together again. (Use an anti-static band etc). remember the screw type and locations etc. refer to a manual or take it to a technician.
So, you will have top open up the whole laptop. remove the Graphics card, remove the screen connectors and connect the laptop to an external display via d-sub (VGA) port. You have a display now. Go to the BIOS and disable secure boot and enable Legacy boot ROM.
Put back the graphics card and everything is back in place.
Recommended BIOS: A15, Still dont use secure boot.
I think the K4000m did not have an EFI rom boot. So hence no display.
Hope it helps anyone having the same problem.

I am having a problem with a precision M6700 with a Nvidia K4000m. I installed Windows 10 Pro in the UEFI mode and Legacy ROM enabled. Later, i enabled secure boot from the BIOS and now there is no display. Tried resetting by removing power and removing CMOS battery. No change.
Need immidiate assistance.
Thanks.

Computer Does Not Turn On Or Go Into Windows
=== Quote ====
No Video
If the power indications are normal but there is never any video seen on the computer's display during the startup process, this probably indicates a No Video issue.
If you have a desktop computer and the monitor has its own power supply, make sure the monitor has a power indicator showing that it is turned on.
To troubleshoot a No Video issue, click on the links below:

Desktop
Notebook

For a notebook, press and hold the Fn key and then press the power button. This starts the pre-boot testing and will launch ePSA. ePSA will test video with a series of patterns. If they look fine but you want to test more, you can respond to the video test with "N" and ePSA will then launch the LCD BIST test. If you have a no video issue, you can either run the Fn+Power to enter ePSA or D+Power to run the LCD BIST.

Hello,
I tried to solve an installation problem for a friend of mine by GPT and as I tried to complete the installation, I most probably made a mistake in trying to turn UEFI boot on. I invalidated the legacy boot option and now the system does not start at all, no Dell logo nor anything else. I tried to boot on several installation DVDs with no results.

Is there a way to reset the settings I made in the BIOS ?
Is there any other solutions to boot ? Is possible that, I am able to find one, an UEFI iso image could be used to start from the DVD and go on with  the installation ?
I think the BIOS version was A11 but I am not 100% sure. Anyway, I am pretty sure I did not try to boot aother BIOS.
Is anyone can help me ;-)

Glad that solved the problem.

Thanks!

I have a Dell XPS 8700 that failed Windows 10 anniversary update until UEFI secure boot was turned off. It apparently then completed but I cannot re-enable secure boot without the same boot problem advising

I am using a Dell XPS 8700 pc with an SSD drive. The Windows 10 update was installingthen after one of the reboots the error above  The pc was running prior to the update and had UEFI OS , secure boot enabled,  no prior problems.I attempted to do any of the safe mode boots but none would proceed.Disabling the UEFI safe/secure boot mode apparently let the install continue and the das it did before with I believe completion of the installation of Windows 10 anniversary update.PC now shows Windows 10 home Ver 1607 ..
The problem returns if I enable UEFI secure boot and the PC stops. I would like to determine a wayto locate the problem or issue. related to the secure boot.  Using the media creation tool may justrepeat the problem once secure boot is re-enabled.
Dell lists that they have tested XPS 8700 with this update and have not indicated problems no mention of secure boot issue.

rdubayah,
If your computer was running WIndows 10 without any issues prior to downloading the Anniversary update, then you would not have had to change any settings in the bios to install the update. The UEFI and Secure Boot settings are to enable booting with a USB or DVD to install Windows.
Disable Legacy Boot Mode and Enable UEFI
Start the computer and TAP the F2 key to enter the bios. Once in the bios Press F9 to Restore the bios to the Default Settings. F10 to save changes and exit. You could have a hardware problem. To run a hardare diagnostics on the computer you would start the computer and TAP the F5 key. Insert a cd/dvd in the optical drive for running the diags.

Your UEFI/BIOS firmware needs to be set to UEFI before installing Windows 8/8.1.

To clean install:

Never seen this message before but I can't get around it. All I did was reboot for a game and this popped up.

I've gone into bios and secure boot is greyed out.

How do I get around this?

Running win 7 64 bit with an Asus x99-A motherboard. Specs updated below

A:"Secure Boot Violation" Invalid signature detected. Check Secure Boot

What is your BIOS version? Have you flashed it?

Unfortunately as I have lack of experience with such an issue I can only refer you here:

I am aware it says "Windows 8" but just have a read through it and get back to us.

So today I went to use my computer when all of a sudden I got a message giving me the 3f0 error. I ran a diagnostics test and it said it could not detect the hard drive. I decided to open the pc ( p7-1234) and make all the wires were plugged in (which they were) then tried again. It didn't work so I did some research.I found a bunch of post on forums about people saying open up you secure boot configuration menu and enable legacy bios. The only problem is I don't have that option under the security tab or anywhere to be honest. Can any one tell me what to do now?

Microsoft has been attempting to patch a serious Secure Boot vulnerability that can be exploited to bypass the security feature and install rootkits and bootkits on Windows devices. Researchers believe the security flaw cannot be fully patched.

-

On systems where Secure Boot is locked down and cannot be disabled (e.g. Windows RT, HoloLens, Windows Phone), configuration changes can be made using policies, signed files loaded by the boot manager (bootmgr) from a UEFI variable. There are some boot loader executables (EFI files) signed by Microsoft that can be used to provision such policies.

Before loading a policy, bootmgr checks it to make sure it?s valid. However, researchers discovered that Microsoft introduced a new type of Secure Boot policy during the development of Windows 10 Anniversary Update (v1607) that can be abused to bypass the security feature.
