Q: How can I change default new folder characteristics

Everytime I open a new folder it happens to be optimised for images, I have to change manually to general items. How can I make that the default type will be general items? Thanks

Preferred Solution: How can I change default new folder characteristics

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello Juan, and welcome to Seven Forums.

New Folders inherit the same template as the folder that you created the New Folder in by default.

A:Can't change default folder

Windows Explorer Default Opening

In Start > All Programs > Accessories right-click on Windows Explorer and drag it to your desktop (Copy Here).

Right click on the Icon, click Properties, and in Shortcut tab, add C:\ after explorer.exe in the Target box ( space C:\).

You can then copy/move this to your Quick Launch Taskbar or, for that matter, you can change the original entry in Start > Accessories the same way.

You can also create multiple versions to start in any folder you want.

Is it possible to change the default folder for 'save' and 'save as' commands? I know that I can browse and select a folder but if I am saving several mail attachments (sent separately) it can be tiresome. I use both outlook express and outlook so either would be a help. Also in outlook express, is there any way to add a new folder option to the 'save attachments' command?

I often download files to a default folder of C:\My Downloads and then using the Windows 7 extract function extract the files to C:\Hold (my own created folder) to proceed with installation of a program etc. then I come back and delete all the files after finishing up.

The extract function in Windows 7 always suggests a folder under the folder I downloaded to (C:\My Downloads\folder name) and I have to change it by typing in C:\hold.

Is there any way to set up a default folder of C:\Hold when I extract files so I don't have to type it in everytime ?

Download 7-Zip. It's free, quick, and easy. And you can pick a default extract location

The default folder view for small-extra large is the folder open on its side with some documents sticking out.

I find this view rather confusing and would like to have the same view that XP had with some images or the image of your choice on the front of the folder. This is mainly a problem with my photo collection. The Vista/Win7 view just makes it harder to quickly recognize what's in the folder.

Hi, I want to change the default browse for folder dialog to point to Computer in any application that uses this dialog.

I do not use the explorer task bar icon, I have set my task bar to look like vista's

Had a look at the post by Brink Windows Explorer Taskbar Icon - Change Open To Target, but as I said, I dont use the task bar explorer icon. I'm trying to set this up for applications that open "browse for a folder".

Perhaps this is what I need - %windir%\explorer.exe /n,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

But I don't know where I would put this setting. I scanned the registry, but didn't see anything that suggested where the setting should go.

thanks

A:Change default Browse for folder location

You need a shortcut to be able to change the target to

%windir%\explorer.exe /n,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

You cannot change that on the orignal explorer.exe

Edit:

OK, played with this for a while, I think I have it:

1) Start> In search box type Windows Explorer
2) Right click the first result> Select Properties
3) In the Windows Explorer Properties dialog box, on the Shortcut tab, make sure that the field box to the right of Start in is empty
4)Type the following command in the Target text box and click OK:

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /root,::{20D04FE0-3AEA-1069-A2D8-08002B30309D}

That should do it

For some reason Adobe Reader and other applications, go to a "My Documents" folder that is not the one I store my files in. I think it's under "Documents and Settings - Administrator" But that isn't where I store my documents. I have another "My Documents" folder, and I've taught Word to use it, but these other applications always go directly to that unused "My Documents".

Is there any way to tell EVERYBODY that "My Documents" is where I want it and where I've put it (on the C: drive directory, directly)?

Some of that may not make sense... Ask for any clarifications...

Thanks.

As you guys are probably aware, when installing certain programs, some folders get created in the root of the Documents folder. I don't like how these mix with my actual documents. So I'd like to do either of these things:

Either change the name of the Documents folder (I'd name it Programs) and then I'll just create a new Documents folder under Users and use that for storing my files

Or change the default location where these folders get created (So I'd create a new folder called Programs and change the location to that folder)

Thanks!

Can anyone direct me to the registry setting for the default folder view in W2K. I want to make it List view.
We run mandatory profiles and when making new profiles always change the default view to list. But when we assign the profile, in some cases the views are fine but others if you go down 2 or 3 levels down the view changes back to large icons. We can have 2 identical users logged onto 2 different machines and the views are different. We have spent quite a bit of time comparing different users to find out why and have decided a registry change would probably be easier.
Any Help would be appreciated.

A:Change default folder view in registry

I don't know if I can be all that much help to you, as far as any registry settings, because I'm not aware of any. But what I would do, is log in as admin and change the profile to ntuser.dat, log in as that user, go through all the levels, changing the folder view to list each time you see it them not in list view. Log out and back in as admin and change the ntuser.dat file back to ntuser.man and delete the ntuser log file. Hopefully, the changes will stick next time you log in with that profile. Hope this helps if you haven't tried it already.

I have happily used Outlook for several years for POP accounts. My recent addition of an Exchange account has hijacked several default behaviors that I was used to. For one, contacts are now saved by default in the exchange related contact folder instead of the folder that is associated with my primary POP account. How do I reconfigure Outlook to save contacts to my preferred folder, so that I don't have to constantly move the new contacts after they are saved? I do not want this information on the exchange account. This bad behaviour occurs no matter what email account is read, from which I am saving the contact info.

To reproduce the problem: Open a message in the POP email, right click on the FROM email address, choose Add to Contacts from the menu, find the contact stored in the exchange contact folder instead of the contact folder for the POP account (the folder that Outlook USED to save to,prior to adding the exchange account).

Work around: (annoying the first few times, mentally unhealthy after more than a few) Save the contact, then manually move it to the correct folder.

I am looking for a solution in Outlook 2010 under Windows 7 Pro.

A:How do I change the default folder for saving contacts in Outlook?

I realize that this is an old thread, but I thought that I'd post an answer. As far as I have been able to find out (and I've spent weeks looking for an answer), it is not possible to change the default Contacts folder. The default contacts folder will always be the one in the .pst or .ost file which contains your default Inbox. If you go to Properties for that Contacts folder, you cannot remove the checkmark from "Show this folder as an e-mail Address Book" on the Outlook Address Book tab.

The best that we can hope to do is to change the order in which our various contacts folders are shown when we click the Contacts icon in Outlook's navigation pane, and change which contact list will be shown first in Outlook's Address Book (via the Address Book icon on the Home ribbon). To change the order in which contacts folders are shown, follow this procedure:
Select the Contacts icon in the navigation pane.
Under My Contacts, right-click the folder that you want to move to the top (or bottom) of the list and then click "Move Up" (or "Move Down").
NOTE: Unfortunately, you cannot remove any Contacts folders from any of your open .pst or .ost files from this list. Ideally, we would want to remove them, but we can't.
To change which contact list is shown first in the Outlook Address Book, follow this procedure:
Click the Tools menu (Outlook 2007) or the Home tab (Outlook 2010 / 2013) and then click Address Book to open the address book.
In the address boo... Read more

Here's my situation. I have preinstalled Win 8 on new desktop, now upgraded to 8.1. When I first started setting it up and it required an account login, I didn't really realize that it was going to exist outside my computer. I used my full name and primary email account for it. Then, it set up a folder(s) under Users (using my name), in the file structure. When I copied over say "Documents" from my Win 7 machine, they now show in a path of: This PC / Windows / Users / (myname) / Documents. I will not be using "the cloud" for anything, and want to only have a local account with Admin Privileges and a local account for using 99% of the time. Hence a multi-part question:

1) If I make a change to my MS password, like setting it up with a non-identifying username/password with a Hotmail email (which I never use), how will it affect my docs/pics/music/etc that is under Users / myname? If I change the MS login to a LOCAL login, what effect would it have instead?

2) Is there a way to get (myname) out of the file structure and rename it something neutral, or will that bring chaos?

3) And, as long as I'm asking things...I created the new Admin-Account and Daily-Account, but it seems like neither of them can access anything. They just get "permission denied" - even on the Admin one. I set up a Hotmail account for them both, so they have MS logins as w... Read more

It is a little dated, but I ran through the steps and it works on my machine.

You would need to change the path to whatever Drive you want to send to.
Steps #5, and 6 refer to the scroll (System) box below the box where you can add or edit the fixed (User) Variables.

My instinct tells me that you might, and it maybe better to create new user variables to accomplish your task, but I am not sure if it would (or how) it would affect System variables. I will check on that, and get back.
EDIT:
This may be a easier to do: User Folders - Change Default Location

Make sure you create a Restore Point before changing those variables!

A:Change the default save as folder in Microsoft Query

well that doesn't make sense, you use MSquery through Excel, get your Data and then use Excel to save it somewhere.

You can Save an MSquery file (.dqy) and then record a Macro that opens it and returns your data and then saves it to a specific location.

Do you follow what I mean? I've done this for years, some MS query's are saved with criteria, or you can replace hard coded criteria ( in MS Query) with Square Brackets like... [Enter Part Number] and you will be prompted works great with Macro's.

Many programs (e.g. internet browser) "save files"/"download location" by default will point to C:\Users\User-Name\Downloads

Q1) After I have moved I have moved to D:\Downloads, will the programs "save files"/"download location" automatically point to the new location D:\Downloads ?

Q2) If the programs "save files"/"download location" is still pointing to C:\Users\User-Name\Downloads, will the programs still save downloads to C:\Users\User-Name\Downloads ?

Q3) Do I need to manually go through each program settings to change the "save files"/"download location" to D:\Downloads ?

Thanks

A:Will moving Downloads folder change program default save location

It won't normally change the location that individual programs save their data files.
The download location is a setting in your browser and is NOT system wide. You could have IExplorer downloading to one location and another browser downloading somewhere else.

If you want the programs to change, you will have to change each one .

Hi guys,
I've recently attempted to patch my folder icons manually with Resource Hacker. It didn't work, in fact it had worked for some folders but most folders remains the same beige icons.
I got frustrated since every step seems correct, but anyways I decided to revert back to normal, by replacing the custom imageres.dll file with the original to both System32 and SysWOW64 folder, and deleting iconcache.db for it to rebuilt.
Most icons revert back to normal after that, but except the folder icons in the C:\Windows folder, where some of them are still showing up with the custom icon.
I've restarted, tried changing the icon and rebuilt the cache file so many times, I even restored to a backup point before the change is made, but still no luck.
I've taken ownership for the necessary files and have run as admin when necessary.

Any ideas why this is happening? and if anyone can provide some tips to successfully change all folder icons, I will be really appreciated. Thanks.

The Downloads folder by default is at C:\Users\User-Name\Downloads

I will follow User Folders - Change Default Location to move the Downloads folder.

Q3) Do I need to manually go through one by one program settings to change the "save files"/"download location" to D:\Downloads ?

Thanks

A:Will moving Downloads folder change program default save location?

Why bother with moving the folder? Every browser I've used may default to the downloads folder on the C: drive but also allows you to specify a different folder. I simply point the browser to the downloads folder on my D: drive and oftentimes I even create a new subfolder for that download. Works for me.

We have upgraded our systems to Windows 7 (From XP). I have setup Indexing on our server and the employees use the Search Bar (upper right on a window) to search for a file they are looking for. However we have over 100,000 folders that we are looking though. Is there a way to set the Search to default type:Folder? Or have it search just folder names instead of showing files also?

If I type in "12345" it will take a minute to search everything and give me 20 files+1 folder.
If I type in "12345 type:folder" it will take 10 seconds and give me 1 folder.

When the employees are on the phone, quicker the better, and having them put "type:folder" after everything is time consuming for them.

I've looked around online and i'm not sure if i can do this.

The computers using this are running
Windows 7 Pro x64
Updated to Current

Server is Windows 2008 (Indexed folder the employees are searching in)

A:Searching: Change Default Search options to set/add "Type:Folder"

You'll probably want to go with something like FileSearchEX to avoid retraining. There are a few others but this one closely matches your question.

A:how do i change the default "open" folder icon in application bar?

Welcome to the Seven Forums

It is ICO_MYCOMPUTER.ico in explorer.exe in the Icon folder in C:\Windows

You will need a resource hacker of some kind so you can open the explorer.exe and import a new icon in its place. I would recommend getting a copy of explorer.exe and putting it on your desktop and then edit it leaving the original untouched until you rename it using the steps below.
Then you'll want to change the explorer.exe do the following.
To properly change a system file you need to take ownership give yourself permission and rename the old file and then copy in the new one look at Post #6 of this thread will tell you how to do it Basic Networking Information

Let me know if you need any more help.
Jerry
