Windows Explorer freezes when opening and after every file change

Q: Windows Explorer freezes when opening and after every file change

Some time yesterday my PC began acting strangely. Every time I open Explorer, I see "Working on it..." and have to wait several seconds before I can do anything. In addition, any changes to the file structure (deleting files, copying, moving, etc.) cause another freeze. This occurs on all drives, SSD or HDD.

There are no error messages in Event Viewer, no problems reported by SFC /SCANNOW, and no file system errors reported by CHKDSK. Any advice?

Preferred Solution: Windows Explorer freezes when opening and after every file change

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows Explorer freezes when opening and after every file change

Addendum: If I launch Explorer from "This PC" I see the "Working on it" text. If I launch via the task bar shortcut, it freezes quietly, and loads Explorer after 10-15 seconds. Accessing files through the command prompt has no delay, which leads me to believe this is an issue with Explorer. I tried rebuilding the search index, but that had no effect.

A quick Google search did not turn up anything.

I want to change the Fie Explorer default opening location from the Libraries to 'This PC -> Desktop'. However, both 'Target' and 'Start In' fields in the File Explorer properties are greyed out.

I am an administrator, and as far as I can tell with my level of know-how, I have full permissions.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

My computer freezes up sometimes when I open up Explorer windows, such as my downloads folder. There is also another related problem where when I click save in ANY program, the save button in the dialogue doesn't work, and I have to close the dialogue and reopen it to make it work. Sometimes it freezes all together on the save dialogue -_- this is getting irritating..

I've had this weird issue for about the past three weeks now. I'm not sure what the problem could or might be. What happens is when I boot up my computer, I can launch any and every program. Problem is when I access my windows explorer for the first time, the desktop will actually freeze for a good 30 secs to 1 minute then go back to normal. This only happens when I open a folder for the first time, then after that, I can access my normal files and folders as usual. (It doesn't matter if the folder has media, videos or documents. Only just the first folder I open will cause the desktop/windows explorer to freeze.)

I am not sure what to do regarding this. I've done every single method I've known so far on checking my computer. I ran rkill, then malwarebytes, then ESET online scanner after turning off malwarebytes - they've all come up negative, even when I do the process in safe boot as well. The only odd behavior that I do recall is the desktop refreshed the icons once by itself and I didn't have the problem that I mentioned during that day.

Other than that, I am at a complete lost. The only other culprit I can guess is maybe my nVidia driver updates. Ever since the updates after version 350.12 (the last known update that worked like a charm) is also when my computer started acting up. I've only considered I just might need to reinstall my Windows 8.1 because I have everything backed up and updated. Any thoughts on what I should do?

Please run System File Checker. The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces corrupted and incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.Important:  There will be a short message at the end of the scan informing you of the results.  If you receive the message "no integrity violations were found" you don't need to do anything else, no corrupt files were found.  You should watch the scan to see the results at the end of the scan. This needs to be run using an Administrator account.  You should not do anything else with the computer while this scan is running.  Do not stop the scan as this can damage Windows files. You will need to open the Command Prompt to run the sfc /scannow.  The easiest way to do this is to press the Windows key and the X key.   A menu will open with the option Command Prompt (Admin), click on this.  This will open the Command Prompt. If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, enter the password, or click Allow.Copy and paste the command below in the Command Prompt, then press Enter.sfc /scannowThis scan will take a while to run, please do not abort the scan as this can result in damage to the operating system. If integrity issues are found in the scan please post the CBS log using the instructions below. To find sfc /scannow log click/tap on File Explorer, select the drive which Windows is installed on (this usually is the C: drive), click/tap on Windows, t... A couple of weeks ago I downloaded a movie using a P2P

I put the movie into a folder with other movies

When I open the folder the computer freezes for a few seconds with an hourglass pointer indicating it is working and then I get a window with the Dr. Watson postmortem debugger error message stating that explorer needs to close. After a few minutes it does not close and i have to manually close dr watson in the task manager window at which time windows explorer completely closes and re-opens.

I went into the command prompt and manually moved the new movies to a new folder to see if they were the cause but now if I open any folder with movies in it, I get the message.

I feel that the movies I downloaded were embedded with some malware possibly infected by the very people that make the movies to prevent people from downloading illegal movies.

We bought a new Dell XPS 8500. We connected it to our file server which we are using a file server with Windows 2003 Server.

I am using a program called Strucad V15.5.

Basically, it is a 3-D modelling program. The model is stored on the server. If we store the model on the local machine the program and model opens up in about 2 secs if that.

If I open a model folder stored on the server, the program freezes at about 50% open every time.

I turned the network card down to 5 meg half duplex and I got the model to open up but it takes 3-4 minutes.

Can anyone suggest something or know how to fix this?

Thanks in Advance!!!

I realize there are many posts on this issue. When I click a Word 2007 document in Windows Explorer, I get the message "Windows cannot open the file (path\name) make sure...etc." Word opens but file does not. With Word open, clicking brings up another instance of Word (without file) and same error. Same as other posts on this issue. Issue does not occur with any other files (Excel, PowerPoint, Access, Acrobat, etc.) Happens with only Word extensions (docx, etc.) If I open Word and open the file from inside Word, all is fine.

I tried saving documents in different Word extensions, saving to different locations, but still get the error--only when opening directly from Explorer or Desktop. I have repaired Office 2007 (Ultimate Version), uninstalled Word, reinstalled Word; tried the registry fix posted here and MS site (removing Data reg entry under Word). Used tool posted here to unassociate/reassociate .docs with Word. I reimaged my hard drive using an image from two weeks ago, but apparently it started before that, because I still get the same error. I reset my index and waited for it to regenerate. I'm sure there might be other solutions I've tried, but these are the ones that come to mind.

It is a three-week-old Dell 1545 laptop, 64-bit Vista. Not impossible to live with, but has me stumped. According to all the posts in networld and here, fairly common problem that seems to have no single solution.

If anyone knows of new tips, I'd sure appreciate it.

A:Windows cannot find file path\file name when opening from Windows Explorer

Error is "cannot find (path\name)...before someone yells. Also, thorough scan for malicious software, trojans, etc. Do not have BSPlayer, whatever that is. Also, if I search for the document in the menu, I can't open it from there either.

This is my first time on the forums, so I hope I don't screw this up. I have searched the forums and not found an answer to this problem, so I hope I'm not re-asking an old question...

I am running Windows Seven Professional 64-bit and Windows Update isn't showing any more possible updates.

My computer is a Dell Precision M90 laptop with a Intel Core2 Duo 2.0GHz processor.

Problem:
When I use Windows Explorer to open files that are associated with the program SolidWorks I receive the message: "There was a problem sending the command to the program."

I am running SolidWorks 2010 Professional SP0 which is a 3D modeling program for mechanical engineering. The program ran under XP without this issue.

I only receive this message if there is not an instance of SolidWorks running. Even after I receive this message, SolidWorks still loads and opens the file I selected through Windows Explorer.

This problem occurs no matter where the file is located (network or local).

This problem doesn't keep me from getting my work accomplished, but it is a bit of nuisance. Any help that anyone could offer would be much appreciated.

I'm including a screen capture of the message.

A:Error when opening a file in Windows Explorer

Hey. Nicely laid out explanation. Refreshing.

You could very well try installing the software again using compatibility mode for XP SP3.

To do so, right click on the installer's .exe file and choose properties. There's a compatibility tab to go to. I trust by my estimation of your intelligence that you can figure out the rest.

If it is on CD or DVD, copy entire contents to HDD first. Then do as I've outlined.

After, run the .exe and install. Might be better to uninstall original attempt prior to new install.

Good luck and let us know if this works for you. Hopefully you make some great designs. heh heh

A:Windows explorer crash while opening folders/file

It may be related to some Explorer extension that was installed and crashing on network drives? Try disabling installed programs "shell integration" as much as you can to test.

Also, you probably want to install Windows 7 Service Pack 1, as it might fix something related to this crash, in addition to some other minor bugfixes.

A:Right click on file windows explorer freezes

Hello Pete Diebenow

I think this might be caused by a bad context menu handler. A context menu handler is a shell extension handler that adds commands to an existing context menu (Example: cut, copy, paste, print, Scan with Norton etc).

Download ShellExView and run it.

It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. Once the scan is over and the list is displayed, you need to spot the context menu handlers. Sort the results using "Type", so that the context menu handlers are displayed together.

General rule here is to disable non-Microsoft context menu handlers *one-by-one* and verify if the problem is solved. If disabling one does not solve the problem, undo the disabled item and disable the next non-Microsoft handler. Do the same until the problem is solved and finally identify the culprit. Scroll right to see the Company Name column in ShellExView.

You can disable them ...they say "one at a time" and see what effect it has on the problem. You can do it a lot quicker by bisecting the list, disabling half of the entries in one fell swoop, rebooting and trying the right click. You just have to narrow it down. Then keep bisecting the list until it is just a few and do these one at a time. The problem is that you have to reboot between tries to get accurate testing of the results of your disabling.

The latest version of ShellExView marks all the non-Microsoft extensions in Pink for easy identification. All other types of shell e... Read more

16 Bit Operating systems haven't been around for a long time, it is either 32 or 64 Bit.
Running multiple anti-virus systems can cause conflict and only one should be installed.
You may have more luck posting this in the Virus/Trojan/ Spyware help section as it could be a virus.

For the past couple of weeks, when I open Internet Explorer it will freeze and eventually freeze my computer. It will work normally most of the time, but it seems to do this once in a 24 hour time span. This has even happened, just like once or twice, when I tried to open ATF Cleaner. I have ran scans with A-Squared, Malwarebytes, and SuperAntiSpyware. So I was using my computer all day yesterday then around 9:30pm my computer kept freezing while running firefox. I restarted and it did it again. I rebooted and opened internet explorer and the same thing kept happening. It had been a while since Ive done a fresh install so I thought that this would be a good time to do one. Backed everything up and reinstalled. Everything runs great now. Here's the problem. All of my clients are calling me with the same problem. I can quite put my finger on it. It seems like a virus but I cant get a scanner to detect anything. Could it be a virus or possibly a windows update? Anyone else having this issue? I amy end up just reinstalling computers all day.Edit: Moved topic from Windows 7 to the more appropriate forum. ~ Animal

I have internet explorer 9 on win7 home premium X64. When going to gmail.com and read my mail, the mail sometimes has an URL in it. If I click on that URL that URL opens in new tab (or new windows if I configure so). I can use that tab without problems... I can click on any link (url in address bar changes) on that tab and can also refresh page.

What's not working there:Press HOME button
Open favorite websites
Enter a new URL myself in address bar
That tab is trying to load forever!! It's busy all the time, but doesn't do anything.

What I did so far:Created a new user....same problem
Uninstalled IE9 and reinstalled IE9...same problem
I even clean reinstalled win7 making my computer dual boot. New fresh instance of win7 (fully updated)...same problem.

I ask a friend to test it on his win7 internet explorer 9..... same problem.

Anyone having same problem? How to solve it?

When I open the link from gmail using CTRL-click it works as expected.

Hi there

My computer recently started to do this:

Everytime I click on a link in an e-mail, (and I know the sites from the link) it opens Internet Explorer and then the computer freezes. And then you have to press Ctrl+Alt+Del, and then press "end task" to make the computer work again.

So what is causing this? And what to do about it?

Hello,
This is just a nuisance, but I'd like to find out if there is a way around it.
At work we have Windows NT ( I forgot which versionO). When I am for example in Word or Excel, and I go to File, and Save, I would like to change the default directory that the open or save window opens to instead of having to go find the drive (we have many many drives, so it actually takes a while to look through).
I hope I am being clear, I dont know really know how else to explain it.
Any suggestions appreciated.

A:How to change default directory when opening or saving a file?

Why not create a folder on your desk top, and when you save files save them there.

hope this helps.

Hi there ,

I've been struggling trying to find out how I can change the Selected File color , in File Explorer since

I switched to Windows 8. Looks like it's now a setting in the registry under control panel - colors -

and have to enter values manually ???

I am sick of the always blue-ish selection color when selecting multiple file in Detail view and or

thumbnail view , it's so HARD to see what's selected in this Powder blue color.

Please if anyone can assist in help me with this , much appreciated .

Thank you

If you like, the selected file color can be changed in high contrast mode from personalization.

I am trying to use a .bat file so that when my computer starts, it automatically opens some programs.
It's working fine in some ways, but I can't get Explorer 8 to open 3 different sites. It only ever opens the last one in the list.
Is there a resource for learning how to write these scripts or does anyone know how to do it?

I have a petty little question.

Is there any way to make File Explorer open in the same position and the same size as when it was last closed.

Currently, it always opens in the same position and size and I almost always want to resize it.

A:Opening File Explorer

Hello dsscottage,

Not sure I follow that.

By default, File Explorer already does open in the same size and position as when it was last closed.

If you want to resize it, then you should be able to.

Hello,

I was away for 4 days cause of work, my computer was off. even from electricity. But now when I turned it on, no updates were applied, but File explorer started to open randomly by itself.

I tried sfc /scannow - nothing found. I am gonna do start-up test by Avast, I hope it's not caused by virus.

Any tips on fixing? Thanks.

File Explorer not opening maximized. Its shortcut ignores the 'Run' setting and always prefers to open the window as 'normal window'. I have tried this:
1 - Close any open File Explorer windows. The shortcut 'Run' setting is 'Maximized'. Click on shortcut. It opens as normal window. Maximize the window. Close it. Click on shortcut. It opens maximized THAT ONE TIME. The next click on the shortcut - it opens as a normal window again, and subsequently.
2 - Close any open File Explorer windows. The shortcut 'Run' setting is 'normal window'. The behaviour is the same as above. Change the shortcut 'Run' setting to 'Maximized' and repeat the test. No change in behaviour.
3 - Close any open File Explorer windows. The shortcut 'Run' setting is 'Maximized'. Click on shortcut. It opens as normal window. Instead of maximizing it resize it to fill the screen until it maximizes automatically and close it. The behaviour is the same as above.
4 - I added the following DWORD value to the registry:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer] "MaximizeApps"=dword:00000001
That made no difference.

This was happening before I reinstalled Windows 8.1 update 1 from scratch (for a different reason). It is still happening.

I have a new-ish PC running Windows XP with Internet Explorer 7 installed.

There is a website I use from which I need to download .csv files. When I open it, it opens in Excel, but rather than have all the columns separated, everything appears separated by commas in just the first column. I know I can then get it into columns by doing the whole 'Text to Columns' thing, but I would rather it just opened correctly in the first place. I didn't have a problem on my previous PC.

I think it is an IE set-up issue as I have tried opening using Opera and it seems to open correctly.

Any idea

I am using the "Windows 7 Basic" theme (with some modifications), but I find the selection colors difficult to distinguish in file explorer windows.

Hovering on a file is a light blue, clicking on a file is a slightly darker blue. There have been a number of instances where I accidently dropped a file into a folder because I had selected it by accident.

Is there any way to change the colors of the file selections (without changing the theme)?

I have an existing OpenOffice document, (it's actually a 375 page book of Spanish) in File Explorer's 'Documents' that I transferred from an old XP laptop by flash drive. All my other documents except .doc & the Oo one, which is: .odt have opened up successfully. I downloaded Oo 3.4.1 which is the latest one. It will by right clicking & selecting 'Open with', after a long period open in Wordpad but a lot of the lines have jumped out of column. I tried right clicking, selecting 'Share with' & 'Specific people' & typed in 'Administrator'' along with my User name of robinp. It didn't solve the problem. I'm going to have a try at right clicking & selecting 'Properties'>'Security', etc. & trying that route. Any suggestions?

So we have a label printing program that the manufacturer built in a nice little "If WindowsVersion > 7 Then t('.'t)" message. We upgraded all officially supported by Dell machines to Windows 10, and we tested the program with Compatibility Mode set, everything worked fine. However, one of our users reported an issue we didn't test; if they open a label file (.lab) from Explorer, it completely ignores the compatibility settings that are on her machine. The settings were changed for all users, not just her, so it's not the problem. Does anybody have suggestions on where to look?

I'm going to be digging into the registry myself, just hoping somebody's seen this before or can help narrow my search. I'm going to start with the file association and see if maybe it's launching a different exe or something...but I don't think it is.

A:Compatibility Mode Ignored When Opening File in Explorer

Hi, not quite sure what you're saying..
- do you mean that if you double click a .lab file, the wrong program is launched (you later refer to file association)
or
- do you mean that if you double click a .lab file, the program behaves as if it hadn't been launched in Win 7 compatibility mode
or
- sthg else

Thanks!

Hello again kind people

I have recently updated my anti virus software to the free AVG. This, once updated, found a virus and deleted it. Today when I open any window that utilises windows explorer (my computer, my documents...) I get a 'virus detected from AVG resident shield. Specifically it says

While opening file: C:\ WINDOWS\system32\msxpe.dll
Trojan horse Clicker.2.l

when trying to delete/heal/move_to_vault this thing it says "requested action not available for this object". All I can do is click on the continue button and the warning goes away.

I have looked for it myself and cannot find it in the location given. Yet everytime I open a new window the virus detected warning returns in the sme state.

I ran TDS-3 with the latest Radius definitions. It found two results which I deleted. The log is below if it is of any use.

A:AVG virus alert when opening file explorer

First I would suggest getting rid of one of the antivirus programs. They can cause problems when running together. So uninstall one of them now.

Download KillBox (http://www.greyknight17.com/spy/KillBox.exe). Run KillBox and check the box that says 'End Explorer Shell While Killing File'. Next click on 'Delete on Reboot'. For each of the following files below, check the box that says 'Unregister .dll Before Deleting' if it's not grayed out. Copy and paste each of the following into KillBox (hitting the X button for each file - choose NO when it asks if you want to reboot):

C:\WINDOWS\system32\msxpe.dll

The Temp folders should be cleaned out periodically as installation programs and hijack programs leave a lot of junk there. Download CleanUp! (Alternate Link if main link don't work) and install it. Run CleanUp! and click on CleanUp! button. When it asks you if you want to logoff, click on Yes.

Restart and see if you still have that problem now.
