BSODs in Windows 7 x64. Graphic card or memory issue?

Q: BSODs in Windows 7 x64. Graphic card or memory issue?

Hello,

Few days before New Year i bought new "fancy" and "strong" computer.
Configuration:
Motherboard: GIGABYTE PP55-UD3P
Processor: Intel i5-750
Graphic card: GIGABYTE ATI RADEON 5870 1GB DDR5
Memory: Kingston 2x2GB DDR3 1600MHz (1333MHz is default i didnt overcloacked)
Hard disk: 1TB Samsung 7200rpm 32MB cash
Monitor: SONY LCD TV 32" Bravia

I installed windows 7 x64... and my nightmare begins.

First I got some BSODs during installation of drivers that came in card package. I am not sure if it was graphic card or motherbord drivers. I downloaded and installed newest 9.12 Catalist from ATI site, drivers for 5800 serie for windows 7 x64.

Then I proudly installed DIRT 2 that came with ATI RADEON 5870. I got couple of crashes during DIRT intro as many other ati card owners complaint about on forums. I think I eliminated that problem when i set GPU and memory frenquency to be 850MHz and 1200MHz for all windows energy saving states (there are 3 of those in ati profile file). Before I did that I had quite a few graphic card crashes with stripes on screen and had to hard reset the computer (problem that is also well known to ati card users according to forums).

And finally when i thought i had solved all issues (no crashes for a few days) i got two BSODs in last three days. I leave computer to download something and after few hours ... crash.
I have plugged this computer and my work laptop both to SONY TV (PC is connected via HDMI cable and laptop via VGA cable). I switch often between computers. Most crashes happens while TV is turned off (maybe there is some issue here?).

I havent overcloacked anything in bios. I didnt flashed motherboard or graphic card bios.

Please if anyone can help to get my system stable i am afraid hard disk will get corrupted due all this hard resets.

Preferred Solution: BSODs in Windows 7 x64. Graphic card or memory issue?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: BSODs in Windows 7 x64. Graphic card or memory issue?

The debugger can't access symbols for your copy of Windows 7.
Please let us know where you got your copy of Win7 from.
If it was on a disk, what did the disk say?

There's really nothing that's identified by the BSOD's.

First, please uninstall your copy of Acronis True Image - it's an older version that may have some issues with Win7 (even if it's listed as "compatible"). You can reinstall it after we've finished troubleshooting.

Please run Driver Verifier according to these instructions to see if it can get us any extra information:

Quote:
Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you can restore the system using the Vista/Win7 Startup Repair feature).

Then, here's the procedure:
- Go to Start and type in "verifier" (without the quotes) and press Enter
- Select "Create custom settings (for code developers)" and click "Next"
- Select "Select individual settings from a full list" and click "Next"
- Select everything EXCEPT FOR "Low Resource Simulation" and click "Next"
- Select "Select driver names from a list" and click "Next"
Then select all drivers NOT provided by Microsoft and click "Next"
- Select "Finish" on the next page.

Reboot the system and wait for it to crash to the Blue Screen. Continue to use your system normally, and if you know what causes the crash, do that repeatedly. The objective here is to get the system to crash because Driver Verifier is stressing the drivers out. If it doesn't crash for you, then let it run for at least 36 hours of continuous operation (an estimate on my part).

Reboot into Windows (after the crash) and turn off Driver Verifier by going back in and selecting "Delete existing settings" on the first page, then locate and zip up the memory dump file and upload it with your next post.

If you can't get into Windows because it crashes too soon, try it in Safe Mode.
If you can't get into Safe Mode, try using System Restore from your installation DVD to set the system back to the previous restore point that you created.
If that doesn't work, post back and we'll have to see about fixing the registry entry off-line.

Hi,

Any advice on this?

A:Windows 10 or Graphic card issue

If you can get into Device Manager try updating your driver. If no driver is available try rolling back or using the generic driver and see if your problem goes away.

first, i'm apologizing for being a computer idiot, but I've never actually messed with / installed a sound card myself. I had it installed by someone who knew what he was doing. :\

okay, so:
i just did a clean install of Windows 7.
a few months ago, i had a new graphics card installed to allow me to play The Sims 3. everything worked fine for months, just exactly like it is now, until I installed Windows 7.

Now, in my device manager, I show two graphics cards:
- Radeon X1300/X1550 Series (Microsoft Corporation WDDM)
- Standard VGA Graphics Adapter.

Both show up as fully updated with working drivers, and claim to be working properly, but in my display settings, it shows up as "Generic PnP Monitor on Standard VGA Graphics Adapter." I've disabled the VGA Graphics adapter in Device Manager, but when I restart the computer, it says "Default Monitor on," with no adapter listed.

Even though I always hooked my monitor into the motherboard, I tried plugging it directly into the graphics card, but the monitor shows nothing except for the "Monitor is working, test red, test blue, etc."

I also tried to enter BIOS and disable my onboard video card; but I didn't see an option to do that (I have Phoenix BIOS on an Emachine T2615, btw).

I actually uninstalled the OnBoard video through device manager, but it automatically installed when I restarted my computer.

I would just wait and take it to the guy who installed it (i won't go to best buy or an... Read more

Hello,

Five days ago I accidentally knocked over a glass of water on my Asus ROG G551JM. After a few seconds, it shut itself off and I immediately unplugged it from electricity and wiped the water off as best I could. I then removed the battery and left the laptop upside down to dry for a day and a half before first trying to turn it back on. It seemed to work well for about 20 minutes before I got a BSoD 'DPC Watchdog Violation Error'. I restarted, and got a BSoD again, this time the 'System Thread Not Handled' error. It was at that time that keyboard began to behave strangely (ctrl registering as a letter, and some of the keys on the right side not working properly). I thought some of the components must still be wet, so I turned it off again, took out the battery and everything and placed it on cat litter sand for it to soak up any extra liquid.

After two and a half more days (today), I decided to give it another go. I plugged it in, and got the same 'System Thread Not Handled' BSoD again, as well as the 'n' key typing 'nj' (which is not too big of an issue considering I normally have my laptop connected with an extra keyboard and monitor). I've been googling the errors during the waiting days, and as unlikely as it seemed, people seemed to mostly suggest it would be a driver issue. I felt that couldn't really be the case since obviously water spill would sooner affect hardware than software, but I thought what ... Read more

A:Graphic Card Memory

Part of the card. No special settings needed. Physically install card correctly following instructions that come with it. Then install latest driver from Drivers & Support | GAME.AMD.COM once Windows is loaded. Then you will be happy. Done.

If the card is an NVidia one, get the driver from http://www.nvidia.com

Does having a low memory graphics card cause BSOD's?

Also if my AGP Aperture Size is 128 MB does that mean I can only have a graphics card with 128mb memory and no more?

A:Low memory graphic card

No, and No. Something is probably unstable or overheating in your computer if you are getting BSODs. Try downloading speedfan or everest. Google them to find their websites.

Hi,
I have a laptop on which the Graphic card shares the main memory, 16M.
I heard that it's still possible to adjust some software setting so the shared memory could be increased(of course on the other hand the main memory decreases), thus the graphic processing performance will increase as well.
Do anyone have experience with enlarge the shared memory from main memory?
Thanks in advance.

Hi.

I just installed the driver for Ati Radeon x2300. Everything was fine but when I checked the Catalysts Control Center, and when I clicked the graphics hardware option, I see that my video memory is 895mb but when I look at the system information panel and click display, I see the card ram is only 128mb. But I really know that x2300 is really 128mb so why does it display in CCC that the memory is 895mb?

A:Weird graphic card memory

Because there is system memory it can use if 128MB is not enough, system ram becomes a fallback.

If I buy a Dell Desktop with Windows 10 64 bit, is it possible to change the Graphic card such as NVIDIA GeForce  and add 8GB memory ?
Or there are restrictions that Graphic card and memory can not be replaced in some models? If so then which model do you recommend?
Any suggestions or help will be much appreciated.
Thank you

A:Adding Graphic card and Memory

The rule of thumb with Dell is you can replace anything you want in terms of HDD, SSD, graphics cards, memory, etc.  IF you have an issue with a warranty covered part, you may have to replace all the Dell supplied components for them to fix it and Dell will not warranty or provide service for any parts you install after the fact.  Example I have an Alienware Alpha R2 and I replaced the HDD with an SSD.  Dell will not help me if I have SSD problems and if I have to send it in for anything else, I will probably have to put the HDD back in before they work on it.

Hello. I was wondering whether it is better to have more memory on board or in a graphic card. I have 4 gig of memory on the board but when I put a 512mb video PCI-e card in the motherboard, it only shows as 3gb usable but if I only put a 256mb video card, it will show 3.5 gig usable. I imagine someone will probably say, it depends on what you are doing but I wondered which setup is better. I am thinking that more memory on board is better overall for the system but more video ram is better for more intensive games or graphic intensive apps. One thing is clear, that a 64 bit system for larger graphic cards in newer computers that recognizes more than 4 gig memory will be better. Unfortunately, this Dell Optiplex gx620 Pentium D 3.6ghz, even though it runs Windows 7 64bit very well, it will not recognized more than 3.5 gigs of memory. I dual boot WinXP & Win7 but I'm not sure this computer really profits from a 64 bit system. I'm not even sure what real advantages there are to Win7 with either 32/64bit at this point in time; of course eventually there will be. Windows 7 is nice and actually boots faster but definitely a memory hog.

And it says that Directdraw and AGP texturing acceleration are not available even though they both reported "Enabled" the last I checked which was about 2 weeks ago. The Directdraw test works however the Direct3d Test (even though its enabled) fails with reports of "Test failed at step 8(creating 3D Device): Hresult =Bunch of numbers and letters(Out of memory). I think the reason might have been cause by "PowerStrip" I used it to slightly overclock my Graphics card by 5 points. However I have been unable to determine how to fix this issue. Hi everyone,

6 Months ago I switched on my desktop PC after a long aircooled night, noticed that my case fans (actually two of them) are running extremely fast and the PC keeps rebooting before reaching the OS screen. I looked into the pc and was shocked! the PC was just sinking in water! Yes, you read that right! I was turning-on my PC multiple times while ALL the parts were covered in water (motherboard surface, all expansion cards surfaces, hard disks ... everything!). Condensed humidity was transformed by the air conditioner into a complete water shower! I unplugged the PC and dried it out using an air blower and let it dry near the window for about an hour, then turned it on again, and YES! everything was working fine! felt very happy as I survived the catastrophe, and returned back to the normal daily use of the PC, but of course without using ANY air cooling in that room again!

2 Weeks ago, I got a defect in my motherboard: one memory slot is malfunctioning (the PC never boots with that slot occupied). I emptied that slot and currently using the other 3 slots only, and resumed using the PC.

1 Week ago, my expensive graphic card suddenly died (GeForce GTX Titan).

I am now confused! Are these defects directly related to the water sink that happened 6 months ago (delayed effect?), or it is just a coincidence? A:Memory Slot and Graphic Card Dead!

Hi and Welcome to TSF!

It's very likely that the water damaged caused the failure. I question if it was a bad PSU that began to destroy the motherboard and GPU. If the PSU is damaged from the water, it could easily take down the system.

The ATI Radeon x1650PRO does not have a high power requirement so it is unlikely to be related the PSU. There are two possible problems,

the first to look at is did you install the card correctly?

the second is, do you have the correct drivers for the card. ie 64bit

Hello TSG.

First off, I think I should start by saying my PC specs:
OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Service Pack 2, .Net Framework 1.1 and 2.0 (about to reboot and install the rest), 32 bit
Processor: AMD Sempron, 2600+, 1.6GB GHZ
RAM: 512mb + 1GB tablet
Graphics Card: ATI Radeon x550, 256MB (I know, old)
Hard Drives: C: Total - 30GB, Free - 8GB; D: Total - 45GB, Free - 44GB;
I've been having some trouble since last friday.

I thought of adding all what I did, but it'd be long and unnecesesary. I'll just post what I did after formating.
I was getting some blue screens saying that ati2dvag.dll was stanked on a infinite loop. After a lot of unsuccessful fixes, I formatted my Hard Drives (which explains why I have so much free space).

Now after I installed the ATI latest driver, my computer keeps crashing. It doesn't crash on secure mode though. I don't see any blue screen now though, the computer just freezes, screen goes black for a second, and when the image comes back, the graphic card is not working right anymore (I know this because the image refreshes much slower). Or it just freezes permanently.

I tried older display drivers, like 8.1 and 9.1, HECK, even 5.2. None of them made a difference.

I'm so tired... I've spent hours and hours on this... I also lost everything I had when I formatted...

Please, help me...

EDIT: I don't know if this is in the right section or not o.o
If not, please excuse me.

Welcome to TSF.

Sorry, but I have to ask this . . . . Why are you still running WinXP SP1 (or even SP2 as it indicates under your username)?? If this PC is connected to the internet, you subjecting it to a lot of vulnerabilities. You really should install SP3.

You can download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/e...displaylang=en

Both the download and the install will take a chunk of time, but it'll be worth it in the long run. Also, I'd strongly suggest leaving your PC running overnight for a couple of nights so that it picks up all of the updates released since SP3.

Anyother suggestion: Exhaust all least destructive troubleshooting methods before doing something such as formatting your HDD. Although that is occasionally necessary, it should be a last resort.

It could very well be that the graphic card is going bad. The only way to tell for sure would be to install it in another PC and see if you have the same problems. You can get a similar card on eBay pretty cheap or you can upgrade.

Since you've gone as far as formatting your HDD, reinstalling the OS, drivers, etc., I'd say that you have pretty well knocked out any chance of it being a software issue.

Do you have a link to your GPU because everything I'm finding is showing a dual fan configuration. What slot do you have it installed in?

Hello. Recently I bought Gigabyte HD 4650 1gb agp 8x card. I unistalled drivers for my old card, removed the old card, put this new card, and plugged in everything. I turned on my pc, installed drivers and directx from cd, and restarted. But i then i noticed some problems.
First, Aero looks weird(picture: http://oi56.tinypic.com/2qu87xz.jpg), so i turned it off. Second, in game scenes and game itself works perfectly, but intros, and other prerendered scenes are really slow and laggy(1 fps!).
Third, when i start playing some game, it lags a bit but after a few seconds it stops and works perfect.
Fourth, some games don't show graphics correctly. Examples:
Assassins creed 2(first scene): http://i51.tinypic.com/16c9kzp.png
NFS Carbon(if i set visual treatment on high, otherwise it works normally): http://i53.tinypic.com/21e5kb7.pn
Also, I noticed that Catalyst Control Center doesn't show SmartGart and VPU recover tab, and I think they should be there.
I installed new drivers, installed newer version of directx, didn't helped. I removed drivers, same thing, i played with some options in Catalyst and ingame options, nothing. I changed some compatibilty stuff in windows, same thing. Please help, I really don't understand why it doesn't works properly. I meet all the requirements for this card, and this problems really frustrates me. Thanks in advance

Hi, welcome to the forums

Firstly, when you say "new drivers" are you referring to the one's provided on the install CD/DVD? If not then download the latest and see if that helps.

Secondly, for uninstalling drivers I'd recommend using Driver Sweeper to completely eradicate any trace of the previous driver and see if that helps.

I'm really confussed about this issue, but I'll explain whats happened and if anyone has any tips please pass them on.

I have a machine by Tiny.com, running win 98se, 500mhz celeron, intel on baord graphics and audio.

I purchased a prophet 3d 4000xt 64mb pci graphics card and followed installation procedure and install card success fully and have been using it with no problems.

3 weeks ago I got given a 700mhz P3 prosessor and replaced it with my tied celeron, and the machine works a dream (considering it's spec!!) again no issues.

I then decided to upgrade my OS to Win XP (Pro). I booted Win98 and started to upgrade, everything started fine until the computer had to rest.

After searching for the MBR the cumputer would 'Hang' on a black screen with a white flashing cusor in the top left corner.

It took me ages to figure out that it was my graphics card that was the problem and after uninstalling it the system booted with no probs and completed the upgrade.

So no I start the install process of card and the same black screen on start up appears.

I've downloaded up to date drivers for XP from Hurcules website but nothing seems to be working.

HELP!!

A:Maybe Graphic card issue?

try booting into safe mode
start the PC and keep tapping F8 a menu should appear - choose safe mode
if that opens ok
a couple of things to try
1) Do a system restore to before it went into hibination & turned off
start>
programs>
accessories>
system tools>
system restore?
choose a date before problem
2) update the graphics / video driver - whats the make and model of PC - what version of windows are you running - the driver should be available on the PC manufacturers website - support section

Hi

I have been having excessive CPU usage on my acer M laptop this is often followed with a BSODs with various codes and messages. error reports (whocrashed) such as these were given:

"This was probably caused by the following module: ntoskrnl.exe (nt+0x14F1A0)
Bugcheck code: 0xC9 (0x6, 0x103, 0xFFFFE00150D0D010, 0x0)"

"Bugcheck code: 0xC1 (0xFFFFCF8124836FE0, 0xFFFFCF8124836036, 0x770020, 0x23)
Error: SPECIAL_POOL_DETECTED_MEMORY_CORRUPTION

I'm not sure which is the root cause of these problems to try and start troubleshooting! bsods often occur shortly after laptop is switched on - once it restarts or is shutdown and restarted its usually fine for a good few hours.

attached is zip with further info. lemme know if any more info is required, cheers!

Hello all

I need help with some issue:
My system says that I have 2,66GB RAM available for applications, services etc. The rest of it (between 1,1 and 1,3 GB RAM) is shared and reserved for the graphic card. I searched for a way to reduce it via BIOS (how it normally works), tried an update for the bios hopping that it would add this feature. But that wasn't the case.

I can't understand why Toshiba doesn't allow his customers to modifity this setting!
I can understand to put such a setting by default, but also giving an option for advanced users to modifiy this setting.

2,66GB RAM are not very much and I often need more than that... 500MB more RAM for sys would be really nice.
And 64bit OSs are currently not supported in our company.

So does anyone know a way to reduce the shared memory to e.g. 500MB?

My system specs:

Windows 7 Pro SP1 (32bit)
Modell: TECRA R850
Serialno.: 7B042670H
Partno.: PT525E-03E00KGR

Thanks in advanced for your answers!

A:Tecra R850 - How can I reduce the shared memory of the graphic card?

As far as I know shared memory works automatically and notebook user cannot control it.
It is nothing new and the same principle is on all Toshiba notebooks.

Sorry but there is nothing to do about it.

The hardware/gaming experts here can help you better if you provide a description(brand name, model number, wattage, speed, etc.) of the following:
Motherboard
Processor
RAM
Power supply

If that's a factory-brand computer and not a custom/home-built one, also provide its brand name and model name and model number.
