Q: VN7-791G: Wifi slow and unreliable when a memory s...

Wifi becomes fast and reliable whne the memory stick is unplugged. Consistently reproducible. Does not happen when the memory stick is plugged into the left side USB ports. Has anyone else seen this behaviour? Qualcom Atheros QCA61x4 wireless network adapter with driver version dated 2016-03-21. Thanks,Chris

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello, E.g. this brand or this one.

My laptop's wifi does not work most of the time.
The power led is onWiFi status shows I'm connected, at 3/5 strength in my usual location.

When I check the task manager, it'll download at roughly 30mbps for half a minute, and then the next hour it just sits there at 0kbps. Often, turning off wifi (for example, airplane mode) and back on will repeat the cycle, where it seems to work just fine for half a minute, and then flat out stops. It stays at 0kbps, occasionally jumping to a whopping 8kbps. I'd rather be on dialup.

The store has diagnosed the laptop and found no problems with the internal adapter.

So one of the things I eventually did was taking the wireless adapter from one of my other computers and plugging it in. It worked. After days of frustration, I figured: "Whatever. I'll just use this adapter since the other PC is basically a dust collector at this point". Fast-forward a few months and I'm back to where I started: for some reason my external adapter is now giving me the middle finger and I'm having the *exact* same issues now.

For example, I go to youtube and start watching a video in 1080p.
Works fine, buffers the first half minute, and then it's over. Nothing. No youtube, no mail, nothing. I'm not even getting local firefox error pages (the typical "connection failed" message) but the spinner just keeps spinning indefinitely.
I took this screenshot right after the problems started. The next ... Read more

Seems like here we go again.
Seriously, is there a compatibility issue with Windows 8 and wifi adapters?
I think this is the 3rd laptop running windows 8 that we have had that cant seem to stay connected via wifi.
The other 2 are no longer with us.
This laptop is still under warranty but I DREAD contacting tech support.
Anyway its a DELL Inspiron 15 3521. Running windows 8.1. Wifi adapter is Atheros Communication Inc. 1705 802.11b/g/n 2.4ghz. Wifi drivers are up to date.
What happens is signal strength will fluctuate and sometimes loses connection. This will happen even when computer is close to router. Does not happen to any other device connected to router.
This laptop was sent back to dell before and they replaced wifi adapter and I believe the main board. Worked great for a couple of months. Previously it would stay connected to router but lose internet connection.
Every laptop with windows 8 we have had, regardless of manufacturer, has had wifi related problems. Two were/are dells and one was an HP.
We have NO issues with any other device connected to same router. Iphones, Ipods, Windows 7, dell, lenovo, XP, Xbox etc etc.
Just anything with windows 8 is an issue.
Thanks again, Mike

For the past year, my external wifi adapter for my laptop has been very temperamental.
Often times it will suddenly either drop completely, or become very slow, with the only solution being to have windows troubleshooter reset the adapter.
Although this usually fixes the problem, sometimes the problem persists, and only a restart can help.

Rolling back the device, trying to find updates, and reinstalling have provided no help, and I'm unsure as to what else can be done.

I'm not tech savvy in the slightest, and looking up the problem doesn't seem to show any results, so if anyone can help, it'd be much appreciated.

Guys I have a recent vintage HP M6-1035 with Atheros AR9485 wifi card. The WIFI connectivity is really unreliable with this device and I can not figure it out thus far. I compare it to my daily-driver thinkpad x120e, a couple of ipads, three android handsets, another laptop [gateway] running windows 8, my HTPC, a xp workstation - all of them handle the network sublimely with no drama.

the behavior is simple: from a fresh boot or disable/re-enable or other fresh connect, it will often show 150mbps - then after a few minutes or tasks, the connection will just drop, I get the yellow caution notice from windows 7, it will show disconnected. whether or not I manually intervene, it will eventually reconnect, and show 72.2 mbps.
when it is connected its almost as fast on internet d/l u/l as the others - maybe 20% less but acceptable.

I've tried various versions/vintages of driver but none offer real improvement - its about the same.
the driver carries very limited settings in Device Manager driver properties - i'm not seeing much to work with there but maybe someone more knowledgeable than I can suggest such.

I attach a couple of screen images. will be glad to capture details if someone gives me direction

thank you!

A:Pls help: HP M6 w/Atheros wifi unreliable connections

Make sure you have the latest wireless driver from HP's web site.

Please attach a screen shot of the Networks page (don't collapse the Radar, Connection or Signal History) of the Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector. If your only email accounts are free (Hotmail, gmail, etc.) try this direct link. If you need help with a screen shot see TSG Posting a Screenshot. FWIW to take screen shots with Windows 8 or 7 or Vista I prefer to use the built-in Snipping Tool.

Let it run for at least a minute before taking the screen shot so that we can get a good look at the signal history.

I have been having on-going internet trouble where webpages will not load or will load very slowly. I have wireless internet and my laptop is the only computer currently on the network. I will attempt to load a webpage, get the firefox 'server not found' page, and when I click try again it will generally load on the second or third attempt, though it takes a while. Programs like msn will stay connected to the internet steadily and will not experience any cutting out. However, when downloading a (legally shared) file I can see it gradually go from 150kb/s down to nothing, and then back up again. If I use the Windows Network Diagnostics during one of the downtimes, which only last about 30 seconds to a minute, it either says it 'can't identify the problem' or says 'your broadband modem is experiencing connectivity issues' and tells me to restart my modem, which doesn't help. When I spoke to my network service provider about an unrelated issue and mentioned this to the tech support guy he checked my network connection and provided a bit of additional information. I cannot remember exactly what they are called, but of the 800 or so 'lines' available, one computer should only use about 4 or 5. My laptop was using something like 350. On his advice I ran a spyware program and found nothing, so he said the cause was probably something to do with P2P uploading from my computer but the problem persists even when the software is not runn... My husband and I both have Windows 8 computers hooked up to our router and networked together. However, when I try to go into his computer or vice versa, there are times that it will say I can't get to his computer and to diagnose the problem and then I just have to wait for it to "load" and then a few minutes later I try again and I can get to his computer. How can I stop this from happening? I just want to be able to get to his computer or he to mine without having to wait for it to find the computer.

A:Network being slow or unreliable

When the problem happens was either PC recently off the network (e.g., sleeping, hibernating, restarting)? If so, there's little to nothing that can be done. Because of the way the Computer Browser Service (nothing to do with "browsers" such as IE, Firefox, etc.) works, after any network change it can be up to 20 minutes (or longer in certain cases) before all devices on the network are updated with the current names. You can access by IP address instead of by name to get immediate results.

Greetings. It seems is if IE has been slow to load pages. Sometimes it even gets network errors and fails when trying to follow a link to a new page. It could just be my ISP is bogging down, but I wanted to rule out Malware too.

I ran a full system scan with the latest version/database of Avira Antivirus Pro.

I then ran MalwareBytes, with all default settings, after checking for program & database updates.

Finally I ran DDS.COM.

The logfiles for MalwareBytes and DDS are below.

Thanks, in advance, for your kind assistance.

Note: Logfiles exceed 50k char limit so I'll break them into 2 or 3 posts.

Note: I'll start a separate thread for my housemate's laptop. We share the same DSL line, so it occurred to me that my Internet response might slow down if he has some malware that is generating a lot of network traffic. (pure speculation on my part)

This is the second machine, a Dell laptop, they are both running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit.

I ran the latest version of Avira Pro and it found no active viruses in memory or virus files on the hard disk.

MalwareBytes did find 256 PUPs. I deleted them and saved the log files, but then restarted the 4-step process.

The second attempt, Avira & MalwareBytes both came up clean. Then I ran DDS.

The log files for the latest pass are attached below. (older logs are available on request)

Right now Avira is active, but realtime protection from MWB is turned off. (I don't want them to clash)

A couple weeks ago I surfed a site with a lot of pop up ads and my internet started slowing down. I ran windows Defender and it detected Trojan: js/tracur.f and three of the Java/CVE exploit family members (java/cve-2011-3544 is the only one I remember and I didn't record them before removal). Defender was able to remove all of them, and later MBAM threat scans and Windows defender full scans detected nothing, but my internet is still slow. I use the latest edition of Google Chrome and often times it either takes a long time to load a page, or the page takes multiple reloads and sometimes just killing the page and reloading from there to get it to load. Just about everywhere on the net acts like this, it doesn't seem linked to anywhere specific. And when I download stuff on Steam, the download speed rarely stays above 600 Kb/s and frequently drops below one hundred, or into the bytes/sec range. Usually it can reliably get up to 700 Kb/s or more, and rarely drops below 200 Kb/s, if even there.
Can anyone tell me what's going on?

Bought a new Windows 7 Home Premium notebook a few months ago. Bought microsoft Office Home & Business 2010, hoping that buying the newest stuff would save me lots of times on problems like this one....

Mail was fine for months, until about 2 weeks ago, sending messages from Outlook suddenly became very slow and faltering on my two IMAP / SMTP accounts.
Small messages got sent, messages of about 100K took many minutes and several attempts, and messages of a few MB never made it. Flakey errors, timeout errors, connection terminated, and so on. Result: I couldn't do my work anymore.

Tried working out solutions with my ISP and the mail hosters. Tried disabling virus and firewall. Tried changing settings. and so on. No improvement.

Then I noticed that sending large mails from my iPhone (using the same wifi network, ISP and mail settings) worked fine. Conclusion: it's in my PC.

Then I tried several times to follow advice telling me to look for hidden, faulty read receipts. I tried to find them with OutlookSpy and MDBVU software (as described in those tips) but found nothing.

After a long time searching and trying I found a tip somewhere to run SCANPST on the PST file of the accounts. Did that on both PST files for the two IMAP accounts. ScanPST told me for both PST files that there were only 'minor problems' and repairing them was 'optional'. Still I repaired the PST.
Result: problem gone!

Cost: several frustating days of not doing my work but trying to ... Read more

Hi there,I'm having all sorts of issues with the Lenovo Settings app on my X1 Carbon:- it's terribly slow, not a single action that doesn't show some sort of spinning wheel. - after launch it takes approximately 20 seconds to "update", until then it shows wrong data. - sometimes it shows wrong data even after some time. I mean it shows things switched on or off, which I definitely set differently.- sometimes it recognizes my 45W power supply as the original (saying "45W Power supply connected), sometimes not.- depending on above, it sometimes "thinks" I'm in an airplane, hence slows down the charging and shows a nasty airplane icon in the tray- almost all the time the app is active the fans are blowing full speed (I wrote in the title that the CPU load is high, I actually haven't verified that, I only noticed the fans revving up)- sometimes some of the power settings (airplane mode) aren't shown at all. I first have to click a few other buttons and then return to the power settings. I would have gotten rid of the app, but I find the 80% charging limit pretty useful and also the airplane mode.Unfortunately the Lenovo support doesn't even know what I'm talking about. They think airplane mode refers to WIFI and Bluetooth being switched off, like on the cellphone. They didn't believe me until I read on the phone what their own app says.  I tried to re-install the app and to un and/or re-install some of the services the Lenovo page recommends for my notebo... Everything was fine when I shut down last night, but this morning when I booted up, I kept getting "Windows Protection Error. Restart computer" over and over along with this error:

HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 02006CF0 XMS driver not installed.

After booting with the startup disk, step-by-step confirming, editing config.sys & re-installing Win98 over existing, I ultimately reformatted my two drives (240MB & 520MB) and installed Win98 (again), and still I get the same thing. Can't even get in under Safe Mode.

I know I've got bad sectors (??), as Scandisk reported, but can't fix?

Any input is appreciated.

I have to daily copy/move files on a small network that consist in a Windows 2003 R2 server and some Windows 7 workstations.
Mainly are PDF and CDR files (is a DTP business) having sizes merely around 100-200 MB
On all I disabled firewall and antivirus and I try solutions such as:
Disable Remote Differential Copy
Use RichCopy instead of File Explorer Copy/Paste

The trivial task of copy of some files across the network is still unreliable: sometimes is regular as behaviour, sometimes it takes long minutes for size as I stated above (e.g. RoboCopy reports transfers as slow as 3000 to 30000 bytes/sec)

Any hints are welcome

i have cable internet that is connected to a belkin wireless router. one computer gets slow internet access when connected to this. multiple other computers get better speed. the one affected computer gets fast speeds when accessing the internet at other locations, like a friend's house. also, the affected computer gets fast speeds when connected to the router by a cable.

so the problem seems to be very specific to the connection between these specific devices.

the laptop in question is a thinkpad e420 running windows 7.

thank you in advance for any solutions or suggestions you might have.

Hello, i have a Windows 7 64bit OS and i am running a Laptop.
Ever since i had this virus (Win32 malware gen) which kept coming up with a notifications of the virus on avast every 2-5 minutes my computer was running slow and when i deleted the virus, by dragging it in to the recycle bin and erasing it, my computer was still running slow?

System manufacturer- EMachines
System Model- eME443
RAM- 2 GB DDR3 memory
Processor- AMD Dual-Core Processor E-350
Graphics card- AMD Radeon HD 6310

I've tried so many things to fix this problem, I have tried;
-Deleting the cache of all my browsers
-Cleaning and defragging my registry with "Clean My PC- Registry Cleaner"
-Deleting the 'appdata' cache
-Installing new drivers
-Searching for viruses with avast
-Doing a Memory/RAM test with "MemTest"

(By the way I currently haven't been getting virus notifications, so i don't think the problem is a virus)

(one time i got a BSOD, which on the top of the BSOD it said something about 'PAGEING ERROR)

I attached Images of;
-My Task Managers 'Processes' tab
-My Task Managers 'Processes- All users' tab
-My Task Managers 'performance' tab
-My Avast virus report of the virus I had before

A:LOW Computer Memory- ONLY 90MB or less Free Memory? Soo Slow?

Hello GiCOMMANDO and welcome to Seven Forums.

I would run another full scan using the free Malwarebytes. It has a good reputation of finding things other products miss. Another highly recommended free on-demand scanner is ESET Online Scanner. (No anti-malware product is 100% effective 100% of the time. If there was such a thing we'd all be using it. A second - or third - malware scan is a good thing.)

From your first screen shot it appears that a portion of your 2GB RAM is being set aside, most likely for your graphics card. Your computer is starting out with less than a full 2GB RAM and 2GB is the absolute recommended minimum. I'd give serious thought to increasing RAM to 4GB (I believe your machine will handle up to 8GB and prices are very low right now.)

Because of that virus, it's possible that critical system files may have been damaged or corrupted. Try running a system file checker scan from an elevated command prompt (option two, this tutorial.) If problems are found run the scan 3 times rebooting in between each scan.

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

And don't forget your basic maintenance chores such as disk cleanup, defrag, disk check, etc. Please post back if anything helped or not.

Hi,I have a problem with my laptop.Since a few weeks I noticed the right fan was spinning very loud and the overall perfomance is worse than before. Especially when playing Overwatch I noticed the lags. After further investigation I saw the the CPU is always at 0,78 GHZ even when there is nothing running at all. When I do nothing the temp is around 50 degree and doesnt really go up even when i play something (propably bc the CPU always stays at 0,78 GHZ) So my question is why the laptop is always throtteling and if it has something to do with only the right fan working on full speed (is this normal?) If someone has an idea I would love to hear it

Hi, 0.78 GHZ is the lowest speed of the CPU. You always have this speed? I mean, even when you stress the CPU?If yes, that means that something is really wrong. Did you use some custom fan control sofware? I don't really know what to say. I would try to boot for example a different OS (eg ubuntu live CD/USB) just to check if you have the same issues. Also you can try to update the intel management engine driver but if it worked before I don't know if it will help. MgmtEngineIntelME (Management Engine)Driver11.0.0.115560.7 MB2015/07/21Download Also do you have the latest BIOS? It is 1.11

I converted to Win 10 last Feb and have all the latest BIOS and drivers and patches from the Acer support website.  I just checked for updates last week. I get the Blue Screen Of Death if I keep Win 10 running over about 3 days.  I regularly hibernate overnight.Win 10 has a ton of stuff running in the task manager, but I primarily run just 2 apps that I interact with.  Google Chrome and NinjaTrader 7. It always seems to get the BSOD when I'm running NT7.  It creates a crash dump on BSOD, but I have no idea how to read it.How can I figure out if it's a driver, Win 10, some hardware, or my applications that are causing the problem - and fix it so it doesn't happen. When I had Win 8 this did not happen, I could hibernate and run Win 8 for months without a problem. Many thanks!

Hello, I hope that somebody can help me. I've changed a cooler in my laptop, because it was so noisy. After that my touchpad stopped working. First i thought that I damaged the flat cable, so I bought a new one,but nothing happened. After that I bought a new touch pad, and it still didn't work. Also it isn't showed in the Device manager (and also not as an unknown device), in the Windows 10 settings and mouse properties. I tried several Synaptics drivers (Win 10, 8 and the generic from Synaptics site). The Windows 10 are in Uefi mode. So it looked as a more serious hw problem, but then I tried a portable Linux version via legacy boot, and the touch pad worked. It even works when I boot into Dos via Hirens Boot CD. But strangely it doesn't work when I boot into portable Win 7 or Win XP. And of course I tried Fn+F7, disconnected or reset the battery. An interesting thing is that after the battery reset, the cursor is shown in the center of the screen, bu it can't be moved, nor is the touchpad shown in the device manager. After the next restart, the cursor is gone. Does anybody has an idea? It's pretty annoying! Thank you!

hello, I bought an internal SSD disk (Samsung 500GB 850 EVO, 500 Go, Serial ATA III with a caddy) to replace the CD-DVD ROM reader that will be now as externe usb drive). So have 2 hard drive (1 SATA Toshiba for Windows 7 and the new SSD one for Linux).I have installed the SSD driver before install the disk, then Windows detect it and I could able to partition it to get a SSD part for Win and leave the rest to be handled by Linux install.Linux installed well via USB (after change Boot order in Bios)Grub also  with 2 os on 2 different disks. But boot only occurs on Windows. So I looked again into bios and I noticed that the SSD wasn't detected in BIOS. My BIOS version is 1.14. Bios keep seing the ATAPI CDROM where I put the caddy and SSD drive replacing the CD-DVDROM reader. Questions :>>Is there another version update higher thant 1.14, with advance options ?On acer website support there is only 1.10 and 1.11If there is 1.14 is there a way to have mod for it  ? >>Could it be more relevant to switch place of disks. Put the Sata on caddy and SSD in place of Sata ? >>If I only boot via Windows because only SATA detected on Bios, could it be possible to use BCDEDIT or some EsayBCD stuff to configure the boot and tell it to...act like Grub and propose my Linux at boot os list thanks if can help

Hi,My webcam isn't working any more.I didn't use it for a while and I only found out about it yesterday. In device manager there is no imaging devices, only one "Unknown USB device (Device descriptor Request Failed)".I verified this is a webcam when I unplugged it and then plugged it again. In Events there were entry about driver migration on 2016-09-14, possibly around the same time when Anniversary update was installed (I can't be sure). Then, there are these entries Device USB\VID_0000&PID_0002\6&16ad8f3&0&5 could not be migrated.Last Device Instance Id: USB\VID_04B4&PID_00FA\5&1FEEBF0F&0&7Class Guid: {36FC9E60-C465-11CF-8056-444553540000} I've tried to uninstall driver, let windows install it again but it didn't help.I also tried to install driver from acer drivers site but that is for intel and installation can't go through.I also tried to manually install Cypress USB-Serial MFG mode, because googling for last device instance id was showing it was Cypress. Uninstalling Usb controllers also didn't help. Basically, I've tried everything I could think and found on internet, but nothing works. Is it simply dead or this could be some driver issue? I forgot to mention - it displays error code 43.

At first it would just take a few power cycles and then it would come back.  Today I tried to restart it after Windows updates and it won't come back even after many hours of trying.  Symptoms are the lights come on, fans spin up, but nothing on the screen.  Doesn't even show the Acer splash screen, can't get into BIOS.  If you listen closely you can hear the fans power down after 20 seconds or so, then the smaller of the two fans (left side if you're looking down at the keyboard) will spin up and down over and over, I just hear a short little *whirrrr* sound then it spins down, then back up, etc...  Don't know if that means anything, could just be the fan reacting to a tiny amount of heat from the vid card.  What I've done.  1.  Did the power reset thing with the pin hole on the bottom.  Nothing. 2.  Popped the keyboard up and disconnected the battery entirely.  No change. First time I did this was a few months back, but after a couple tries it booted up.  It doesn't get restarted very often, but it seemed like every time it took a bit longer to get it to boot.  This time I don't think it's coming back.  When it was running it ran great.  Played games, it didn't run hot at all, no problems.  I never had it crash while running, just this boot issue.  It's one of the early V17 Nitros, came with Windows 8.1 64 bit.  I hadn't yet upgraded it to 10.  My gut... Hello, I have acer aspire VN7-791G and Windows 10. I'm playing COD4: modern warfare, but i can't get FPS to 250(it's always around 180-220). Please help me, I think that this laptop should be strong enough. There's must be something that i have overlooked...Thank you.

A:ASPIRE VN7-791G FPS problem

Hi, The only suggestion is to check if your notebook runs into thermal issues, like thermal throttling. If yes, changing of the thermal paste could help to improve performance. A more simple solution? Reduce the graphic settings from the game settings Also, why you want 250 FPS? Since you have a build in display at max 60 Hz (aka 60 FPS). No matter if your graphics card is able to pump out 200 or 1000 FPS you will not see any improvement, contrarly you will have issues with screen tearing, thus you will need to enable Vsync.  Unless you use a 300 FPS monitor (i know just about 144 Hz) it is completely useless, visually speaking.

Hello!  I realize that my issue is about a month old now, but it is still a catastrophic problem for me.  I haven't tried asking a question here, but after weeks of trying to work on the issue with someone on the Microsoft Windows Community forum, it probably is a good idea to see if the issue is something unique to my ACER VN7-791G-78ZM.  Here is the issue as I described it in the Windows Community forum:A couple of weeks back (shortly after my laptop attempted to install the Windows 10 Anniversary Update), my ACER Nitro 17, with both a SSD and conventional Hard Drive installed, bricked itself. By that I mean that the system went through the download and preparation steps, then began installing the update, and shortly after the installation began the screen went black, the system fans came on and stayed on high for several hours (more than 3), and then I finally gave up, forced a power off by holding down the power button, and tried to restart the system. When I attempted a power-on restart the system went to the initial ACER splash screen (indicating that the  initial BIOS boot had been completed), and the "rotating circle of death" was displayed for about 5 seconds. After that, the whole power-on boot sequence restarted itself, and the same result is repeated... and repeated... and repeated....  I found that I could use the ACER power hotkey to force the system into Advanced Troubleshooting, but almost nothing there works.  Neither Refresh nor...
