Website runs installer instead of sound.

Q: Website runs installer instead of sound.

When I try to play a saved sound file from a website, it instead opens an installer for a random program that's already installed. It runs fine on other machines, I've reset my IE several times. Same issue. Very weird. When I hover over the play icon,
the address points to a .aspx shortcut to the actual file, since all of the play icons give that same url. Any ideas ?

Preferred Solution: Website runs installer instead of sound.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have two main problems, the first one is that the Windows installer is running for 2 seconds every time I log on to the PC. I have no idea why, and scans with EasyClean, Spybot and NAV shows nothing at all.

My second problem is that for some reason I cannot install MSN Messenger. It keeps telling me that the administrator has prevented this with security policies, but I am logged on with a user that has admin rights?

I am running a Sony Vaio W2, with XP Home SP2 installed.

Any advice at all would be appreciated.

Hi Everyone. Hopefully you can help me sort this out. My dad's machine always runs windows installer when the machine starts up. You can click cancel and proceed with things. However, you cannot install any program that wants to use windows installer.

I did look at the Event Viewer and it looks like it is saying Visual Stuido 8 is failing on startup using the msiinstall.

I also have run hijack this and am posting the log below. Any thoughts on this would be great. He needs to install the new Turbo Tax. Thanks in [email protected]

Hi guys,

for the past couple of days I have noticed that Windows Installer will suddenly, for no reason, appear and disappear within a few seconds so not long enough to see what it is actually doing!

MalwareBytes had caught two viruses it thought were Malware and I let MalwareBytes remove them, Microsoft Security Essentials caught a java exploit and removed it yesterday so I'm running a SuperAntiSpyware full scan (previous scans were all full scans) to see if anything has been missed.

I have Windows Update set to check for updates only and I have updated to Service Pack 1 on a 64 bit machine.

I am only concerned because I have spent days, if not weeks trying to make space on my External HDD in order to create a System Image for emergencies and don't want to end up having to go back to a system image that is infected with what most likely caused me to need to restore!

Thanks guys!

After full scans with your AV and Malwarebytes, run SFC -SCANNOW Command
to see if System files were damaged.

I have a problem that developed sometime ago. During Windows Startup I get some instances of the Windows Installer dialog box being displayed.

The dialog box is labeled 'Windows Installer' in the box it says 'Preparing to Install' and there is a 'Cancel' button in the lower right of the box. This appears to be a standard Installer dialog except that no program is mentioned as the program being installed. They last only a few seconds and then disappear.

I run Norton internet security; my system appears to be clean.

I have heard about Windows Installer Cleanup Utility but I don't know which programs are causing the problem. I am also concerned that I would be faced with an extensive reinstallation exercise, which I would like to avoid if possible.

Please can anybody help out there!

Well hello everyone.. I'm a new member and signed up because of this problem..
Here it is:
At startup, Windows Installer pops up and it tries to install something into the computer. then, a security message pops up saying "An unidentified program wants access to your computer". The program is by "Unidentified Publisher". Everytime it asks for permission, I deny it access for fear of virus/malware.
The problem is:
I DON'T KNOW what it is, where it comes from or who published it. It pops up at EVERY startup. It's annoying but at the same time scary. What if it is a crucial update or something?? What if it's a virus??

Waiting for a solution. Still denying access.

Thx

The Windows Installer CleanUp Utility can help with installers running at startup

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301

It may help remove that installer from starting up however you would have to know the name of the installer you're looking for. When you install the CleanUp Utility it will show you a large list of installers and you'd want choose the one that's starting up with Windows.

Hope it helps you.

Hi and Welcome to TSF

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

Now make a backup or a Restore Point. You're about to make changes to your system, and if something gets screwed up, you'll want to be able to recover, right?

Locate and run msicuu2.exe to install the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility.
Locate and launch the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility on the Start menu.
From the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility window, scan the list looking for something that appears to be Corel Paint or Sonic related.
Locate the application in the list and click the Remove button.

Once you're certain you've found the right thing ... remove it.

Once the application has been removed, click the Exit button to close the utility.

Now reboot, and see if that didn't make the problem go away. In many cases if you've selected the correct item it will.

Need some help if possible please.

Everytime that I start Windows XP (Home SP2), Windows Installer runs and takes a considerable amount of time to close (about 5 minutes). There is nothing in the Windows Installer window, just the window itself and a cancel button. It does not appear that anything is gettin installed but I can not be sure. However, as soon as the installer window closes by itself, I get a warning message in the system tray that I have no Firewall protection and then the warning immediatly goes away.

This leads me to beleive that some type of malware is responsible for this so I checked the Firewall status in the system properties and there are no programs identified that can clear the Firewall that I don' know what they are (File and printer sharing and Roxio UPnP Renderer9 - which I assume to go with the Roxio suite that I have installed).

I have run a spyware cleaner with no positive results. I have run an anti-virus scan with no positive results and both programs are up to date (the update daily).

I've searched the threads and tried what others have tried without success, so started a new thread. Please re-direct if necessary. Some time ago I tried to get access to a 32gb stick that came back as "write protected" (without success) and in the process attempted to download some drivers for it from a "search for drivers" prompt. Since then Windows installer starts up every time I turn on my computer saying "the software you are installing for this hardware -Generic volume- has not passed windows logo testing" with an option to continue or stop installation. If I stop or continue, a dropbox appears saying the software couldn't be installed, click finish to close.
I'm using XP with SP3, 2 HDD's, 2gb ram on an Asus mb.

After a security patch was installed by Windows, the Windows Installer runs every startup, never completes...and is almost impossible to kill or cancel. I tried system restore but it won't accept the 1 restore point before the patch, so no help there. I don't see anything obvious in Task Manager to track down, but may be easily missing something in the long list of processes.

Suggestions most appreciated how to resolve this.

I encountered a similar issue when I first got Windows 8. A good first step would be to use Microsoft's 'FixIt' utility for Windows Update if you haven't already. What ended up working for me was a refresh of the system; not a complete restore.

Got a strange one here. I am trying to load a website, The SAA - Society For All Artists, I use almost daily, on my PC, but for the last 4 days, it's taking over 2 mins to load and when ir does open, it opens with just text. Neither can I open links from the menu. I do not have any problems with any other site. My PC is a Packard Bell, Win 7 HP, 32 bit. I have no problem with my Laptop, also on Win 7, 64 bit, and my Android Tablet.

I first noticed this problem last Saturday, at first just a bit slow and I have daily auto scans with MalwareBytes and AVG Pro. Other tests I have so far carried out include CCleaner, full scan, AVG Tune up, AVG Optimiser and a couple of other little aps I have on the PC.

I have tried both IE9 and Firefox (Whatever the latest version is)

It's got me baffled. Why is it just the PC? I thought it might be their servers, but when I tried it out on my other 2 devices, it fully stumped me.

Hope you knowledgeable guys can help out. The PC is my main device. The laptop is used mainly for monitoring the weather. The Tablet, mainly as an e-reader.

Thanks.

Hello Stokkers,

You mentioned that you used AVG Tune Up. This program is good, but I wouldn't recommend it to people because there's not really a need to "tune up" your computer.

Is this issue only happening on one browser? Internet Explorer? Or do you have more than one browser?

Hello caramelyummy and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. After reviewing your log I do not see anything that would point to an infection but there are some items that we need to address.Step #1It appears that there are multiple anti-virus applications running on this computer (McAfee and AVG). It is not recommended to have this because it can cause file access issues and if there is an infection the multiple programs can block each other from dealing with the infected file. I highly recommend that you choose which application you want to keep and uninstall the other one(s) to prevent these problems.Step #2It appears that there are a couple of programs that were once installed but not completely removed. I looked at the list of sub-forum topics and don't know where I should put this, so I will try Discussion (a Mod is free to move it to a better place).

I have a Samsung Series 5 running Windows 7 Home Prem (and Norton 360).

There was a problem when I attempted to boot up this morning -- Windows attempted to fix the problem but did not succeed -- offered me the option to restore to an earlier version (which I declined, as I will suspect that might return to when I got the notebook which means I will lose installed programs such as Office, etc).

So, after that, I can boot up, but the problem is that it automatically starts up Windows installer.

But the real problem is that when I attempt to open any of my Office programs (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Windows Installer opens telling me it is 'Preparing To Install', but after attempting to do so gives a 'Fatal Error During Installation' message.

In order for me to properly diagnose your problem I need to understand a few concepts which caused this.

What restore did you do? Was it a system restore or a Samsung recovery type program?

If presented how far did you restore back to and was the programs you are having problems accessing installed after the time you specified?

Do you have any installation setups or discs for the affected programs?

I am having trouble with a website that is important for my work. I am a Realtor and it is the MLS, armls.marketlinx.com. It lets me login and then takes 10 or 15 minutes to load the first page after the login. Then it takes at least 10 minutes to switch between pages. I have it in my trusted sites and cookies for this site are enabled. I have tried dumping the temporary internet files and cookies and history etc. The same website runs normally on my husbands computer in the same room.

As for my computer, it is 2 1/2 years old.

It is a Gateway 3 GHz with 1 GB RAM, running XP Media Center. I also have an HP 3GHz with 2GB RAM with XP Media Center that I try to keep running for my husband, and a whole room full of ancient obsolete machines dating all the way back to windows 95. The HP is only 6 months old refurb.

The two are networked together with a Netgear wireless router using the wired ports and Cox broadband access.

They are firewalled behind the router and additionally, using Zone Alarm Pro. I am running the full suite of Zone Alarm security products including firewall virus protection and spyware removal tool on both. In addition I am running Webroot spyware removal tool on both and AOL spyware removal tool (which is due to expire soon.) All utilities run daily on both machines separately. Automatic updates for Windows is enabled on the HP because my husband can't be bothered with updates. On the Gateway I have the alerts enabl... Read more

A:Solved: only one website runs extremely slow IE7

Please plug the slow (site) computer directly to the Internet, and try the site again
This will eliminate all the network stuff.

Depending on the outcome, you may need to do all updates to Windows and drivers (windows update) and also Antivirus and scan

Please Help!

The most recent problem I am having is that I can't use the one website that is essential to my work. I am a Realtor and I have to use the MLS system on armls.marketlinx.com. The site runs so slow that it is completely useless, taking like 15 minutes to load and then 10 minutes to switch pages. Everything else works fine and loads at a normal pace, but the ARMLS website takes 10 or 15 minutes to open a screen after the initial logon which proceeds as normal. Most other websites run at a normal speed on this computer. I have put it in the trusted sites zone for my firewall and Internet Explorer and enabled cookies for it, and I have dumped the temporary internet files but it still runs ridiculously slow. If I bring it up on my husbands computer it runs fine. His computer is on the same home network in the same room as mine.

Thanks,
Audrey

A:[SOLVED] ONLY one important website runs slow

Audrey,

I found your post when looking for a solution to a problem one of my clients had. She is a realtor that had the same EXACT symptoms that you do with armls.marketlinx.com. I was dissapointed to see that no one had replied to your post and there were no other posts anywhere on the web about this problem. After hours of experimenting with her system, I finally traced the problem to ZoneAlarm Pro. After uninstalling ZA and then installing other AntiVirus, AntiSpyware, Firewall options, the armls.marketlinx.com web page regained its original speed!

Now I'm not bad mouthing ZoneAlarm, (I use the free version myself on my personal computer), but I could not find any settings or options in this program that would let this web page perform normally. If you have ZoneAlarm installed on your computer, (especially the Pro version), I would suggest uninstalling it and see if you get the same results.

Good Luck!

Anyone here familiar with making installer progs? I would like to make the first year of my website, Watch, downloadable and installable, if possible as a special on September 11, but I haven't the faintest idea on how to do it?

Just a simple in/uninstaller function would be great, making it possible to access the archive for the whole year easily from your harddrive.

Any ideas on programs/tutorials would be very much appreciated.

Here's Watch btw:

I have the same problem as this man here

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-7/1031402-please-help-bb-desktop-manager.html

Whenever I open a media file (.mkv in most cases) in media player classic home cinemaI run into this issue where the file doesn't open and BlackBerry Desktop Software 7.1 windows installer runs and tries to install Blackberry. It can't because most everything Blackberry related on my computer is gone...or so I thought. I ran virus scans using spybot search and destroy and windows security essentials and nothing changed. I have un/reinstalled Media player classic many times to no avail. When I open the same files in VLC they work just fine. I followed the last step in the thread I posted and the command line for the processes (found in process manager) that runs when Blackberry desktop software installers opens are these.

I did not go through the first two steps in the previous because the person said they did not work for him. I had used MPC-HC successfully for years until recently.

any idea on how to get rid of these?

I booted from a rescue disc, removed the hidden and system attributes from the above folder. Inside were three files, twain_32.dll, kesgquuy.tmp and 8afc49b02429a. Knowing there was no valid reason for this folder or these files to exist, I deleted the files and the folder, and rebooted. I have been running several hours now with no extra copy of explorer.exe loading, so I am assuming this is fixed. I know I haven't removed whatever code loaded this stuff, but since it has been rendered ineffective, I'm going to call it a day. No need to proceed with help on this post. I'd delete it if I knew how. Thanks.

Hi, first off I am very sorry if this is in the wrong forum. So, lately my computer has been running very loudly and very slow. Also, when I play any sound it makes a weird noise sometimes and skips. My CPU usage jumps from 20 to 30 to 100% for no apparent reason. I tired running anti-virus programs, but that didn't work. I did disk defragment and disk cleanup, but neither of those worked. I really don't know much about computers though, so I am stuck on what to do next. Please try to help me and thank you. I have windows XP. Sorry if this isn't enough information, I just really don't know much about computers.

I'm wondering if anyone knows something I don't that may contribute to additional ideas leading to the answer (that spark we all sometimes need!), or have a direct answer, to why this could occur:

I left the house at 4:55 PM with Sound Recorder running.

I came back to the house at 6:20 PM, unlocked my screen, and sound recorder was still running as expected. At that point I stopped it and saved the file.

However, the resulting file (pretty much silence, except for the sounds of us leaving at 4:55 and coming back at 6:21), was about 6.5 hours.

Other than the possibilities of magic, spiritual realms, or human intervention and some technical ninja wufoo concatenating silent wave files or WTF ever it could be along those lines, is there any reason this could possibly happen? No, I'm not drunk, nor have lost track of time, nor be mistaken.

Help!
My computer screen goes black, the sound goes jerky and then stops and the fan runs really fast. This is apparently random, I have run checkdisk and there are no errors. It happens when computer is cold so is not overheating. It was happening a few weeks ago and I figured it was my 4 year old processor or my mother board so I replaced both and got a new power supply but now it is happening again. When it happened before my hard disk was corrupted so I removed everything from it, formatted it and reinstalled windows, but this time my hard disk is fine. The only bits left of my old computer are my hard disk, my graphics card (which is only a year old) and the wires. I don't know what to do.

So, I downloaded a program the other day that has created problems similar to ones I read about on this forum. It has been running iexplorer in the background under my processes, along with the audio of ads for bleach, a trivia game, and toothpaste. It was popping up a Java error as well, and I got a pop up window at one point with a porn ad, though I was not actually connected to Wi-Fi at the time. I tried running AVG, Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, Windows Defender, and rkill.exe, but none of them caught the problem.Unfortunately, I may have broken what appears to be one of your main pieces of advice. I know enough about computers to try to fix it myself. I found some programs on my "Add/Remove Programs" log that were obviously malware, so I uninstalled them. I also unchecked a box that was under "Startup" in msconfig that appeared to be a problem. Having done all of this, the visible/audible problems seem to be gone, but I am concerned I didn't get everything. I hope I haven't gone too far and cut off your ability to help me.I have attached the DDS information. I tried running the GMER scan several times, but it froze my computer before the scan completed.Any kind of help you can provide would be wonderful!
