Giant oversized desk top icons

Q: Giant oversized desk top icons

At some point a few months after I got my Sony VAIO the desktop icons became huge. It doesn't appear to affect working of the computer. However it gets pretty crowded with only two or three short cuts. It looks all kind of wrong.

I have looked for other advice. I have tried the screen resolution etc etc so I am all out of answers. Any help would be fantastic.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi KaneBridge
What you need to do is change the icon size from large to small just right click on the desktop view and small icons.

Hi all,

I started a new thread as suggested in the other discussion.

I picked up a new HP laptop the other day and the icons in the context menu are giant. I remember HP installed a start menu program or something similar when I first booted up.

But as usual with all non MS Signature PCs, I did a crapware/bloatware cleanup. Deleted every single HP installed program until it's a clean state. (The reason I didn't do a fresh install is because of the beats theme....).

I removed that start menu program but the icons are still giant.
It seems like the system icons are affected but program-specific icons aren't. e.g. Chrome's icons for webpages aren't affected. But pin to taskbar and close window are.

Any suggestions?

I have a XP system that had a virus and was declared clean on the virus, trojan, spyware forum. It worked fine for a day. I uninstalled f-secure and installed eset smart security and it has given me trouble sense. I believe the f-secure did not completely uninstall. Now when the windows loads, it comes up to the desk top fine, but when I click on something it sits and spins. If I start it in the safe mode, I can get to any program. I have updated and rerun the Malwarebytes and super spyware programs and they came back clean. I need some direction on what to do next.

Don't know what I have done but all my desktop Icons have changed, the symbol is now Adobe icon. When i try to open any of them up it just trys to open adobe up and not the actual page.(eg: an icon that says norton 360 but with a picture of adobe on,opens up as adobe and not norton 360).. I have taken the Adobe completely out from add and remove programmes and my icons have gone back to normal. But when i re install adobe it goes back to these icons with the adobe symbol on. I am going to need adobe reinstalling but cant do this while its doing this. Can anyone throw any light on what i am doing wrong/

( sorry it sounds long winded but its the only way i can explain what is wrong).. Thank you .

A:Desk Icons

Hmmm....that is a very unique problem that I have never heard of before. Thanks for being detailed in your problem description. It makes it much easier to help somebody when a clear problem is stated. Here is my first piece of advice:Install Adobe again. Assuming the icons do the screwy thing again, download and install Revo Uninstaller and do an "Advanced" uninstall of Adobe using Revo. It will run Adobe's uninstaller, then scan your computer for leftovers from the application (registry keys, files, etc...). Delete everything it finds. Finish inside Revo and close it.Restart your computer. Then try installing Adobe again. Hopefully clearing everything out with Revo will keep that icon problem from happening again. I make no guarantees, but it is the first thing you should try. It's fixed problems similar to that for me (programs screwing things up).Let me know how it goes.

Oh dear, this is so embarassing but after spending countless hours trying to figure this out for myself, I must admit temporary defeat and ask for help - gentle smile.

On my old Windows 98 it was so eary to simply 'manually' move my icons anywhere I wanted them to sit on the computer's desktop.

But with my new Windows XP Media Edition, I'm at a loss. Truly.

I wandered through the Mini-Guides for Microsoft Windows Operating Systems and suspect this is such a basic question that I may be the only 'newbie' that can't figure this out on her own. (Yup, this is so so embarassing!).

I tried dragging them. Then I tried right-clicking directly on an icon and using the 'move here' - but that didn't work either. Then I got a bit smarter and tried right-clicked on the desk top and found some choices given.

Arranging the icons by name isn't going to help, nor by size. Tried by 'type' but that didn't do it either. Then tried using 'Modified'. Then played with the 'auto arrange', etc, including unticking the 'lock web items on desktop' plus all the other options - all to no avail. ( Finally figured out how to get the icons to sort of 'exchange places' with each other - but that's not helping me.

Would someone please be kind enough to tell me how I can get my icons to play nicely and, for instance, let me place all my anti-virus ones on one side of screen ... all my photo editing progr... Read more

Ok, so here's the problem. I lost all the icons on my desktop and couldn't open anything up using the start menu. I could get one click and then the system would lock up. I had been having some problems with norton and couldn't uninstall it because I couldn't get anything working. I made a new user account an things seem to work fine on that side, but still coulnd't get into add or remobe programs. Downloaded the norton removal tool and it said I needed to update windows installer, which I did and then Norton would remove. Everything seemed to be working well until I lost all my icons again. I haven't put Norton back on yet because I wanted to wait a while to make sure that things were up to par, obviously they aren't. I have ewido and ad aware which I've run a bunch of times and they are both clean now. Want to get the log up to make sure nothing else is going on. I think I may be ok, but I don't want to log on and have no Icons again. Thanks..

Could be the graphics adapter. I installed a nViidia card in a HP Pavilion (2.4 P4, 512 MB RAM) and the exact thing happened to me. It worked FINE in SAFE mode. I used another machine and downloaded to latest nVidia drivers, installed them (in SAFE mode) and it solved all problems.

OR, it could be a hiccup in the power management system on your MoBo. Shutdown and UNPLUG your machine and all pheriphrials. Press and hold the power botton for a couple seconds to remove any static power. Leave alone for 30-60 minutes. Plug it all back up and start it up. A friend had a Dell machine that did this and removing all power as described fixed his.

Hope this helps.

Try the Repair Icons option in TweakUI: (147 KB file)

XP's Tweak UI tool gives users more options
The Repair branch
The options found on the Repair branch are handy troubleshooting tools that can allow you to easily fix a number of common problems (see Figure D). Click the drop-down list to see a list of actions that the Repair tool can perform. After you select an item from the list, you just click the Repair Now button to restore that item.

The first item on the list is Repair Icons. To improve performance when loading icons into the user interface, Windows XP keeps track of all the icons currently in use in a special cache file. If this file becomes corrupted, the icons used in the user interface will become scrambled. For example, you or your users may discover that your icons are all black or have mysteriously changed. You can quickly set things straight by choosing Rebuild Icons.

I can run task manager in safe mode and have input 'new task' >explorer.exe> this is running and present , but on reboot to go into windows normally all is the same.

also have typed issue into google , and run a few solutions i found from the search ... but to no avail..
