I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Define black screen? Any errors or it was more like the monitor blacked out? If the monitor, shine a flashlight into the screen, stick your nose right up and look to see if you can see a very faint image of your Windows desktop. If you can, your monitor's backlighting is failing.

Try another monitor.

New Member here and more than happy to donate if I can consult when these issue arise and actually able to resolve.
My issue currently is my Gateway- Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit Intelcore, ATI Radeon HD5570 6GB DDR3 Computer is black screened. It has done this on occasion before now but has typically resolved itself after shut down and reboot. This time it has not and remains black screened. I have tried everything...shutting down manually over and over....switching monitors....disconnecting all power and cords/internet. I moved the unit to where my back up unit was located and after hooking it all back up with the other monitor etc...the PC booted back up and went to safe mode screen however I accidentally started it in normal mode rather than safe mode which I intended to and always do and since then it has been black screened and fan buzzing. When I say Black Screened I mean totally...no cursor top left and it has not been there upon any reboot. Please advise. Thank You.

As pointed out in the title my second monitor connected via VGA to my laptop doesn't work. Earlier it was working.

Second monitor (HP W2071d) is recognized by the laptop (lenovo idea y510p. Here's a link to my laptop (http://shop.lenovo.com/us/en/laptops/lenovo/y-series/y510p/#tab-tech_specs)
1. VGA cable and monitor works fine (tried it with another laptop). So it's probably something to do with my computer.

VGA is firmly attached.

2. Drivers are all updated

3. Duplicating screens only shows black on second monitor.

4. Extending screens shows that I can move mouse out of primary monitor into other screen.

5. When I was playing Dragon Age, once in a while fuzzy pictures would show up on my second monitor (back when I had it on duplicate. Now its on extend).

Also, I just took a screenshot of something interesting. http://i.imgur.com/oFIfO7E.png
Originally the picture was just to show that the second monitor is detected. Notice that my second monitor is picked up in the picture. Unfortunately, the black screen is still there for me but at least my primary monitor recognizes the second monitor.

Please and thank you for any help given.

This morning when I turned my computer on the desktop was running and I could hear the fans running, but my screen wasn't showing anything. I turned it off did a quick dust and it worked. I just got home and the same thing happened, but this time I did a full dust clean and it did not work. I've tried using different monitors that I know work and it doesn't work. The ports show no damage and I've also reset the cmos any it hasn't seemed to work. Currently I can still boot it up and see that the monitors turn on and then go to power saving mode (new cords didn't fix it either) my mouse doesn't light up on the bottom. If anyone could help me out I'd greatly appreciate it

I'm new to this but I figured I'd give this a try. This is a repost of my earlier post I did last week. no replies .

I have an Acer Aspire 5110 laptop and recently I've been getting the bluescreen when starting the laptop. Sometimes it pops up after I login, sometimes on the password screen. The bluescreen usually has HSFHWAZL.SYS (i think). After this, windows usually does a disk check. Sometimes it finds nothing, other times it truncates like 15-20 files.

Currently I'm running WindowsXP Media Center Edition.

I downloaded HijackThis and here's the log file.

If I'm missing anything, please let me know. Thanks!

Blue screen is Blue screen of Death if it occurs it means that there is some issue with the operating system or the hardware.
it may be the virus issue.

A:Blue Screened

Hi, some reasons for Blue Screens
New hardware - software installed.
Device driver - Video driver - corrupted - faulty.
Faulty Ram - Overheating - Dying hard drive etc.
Let us have some Pc specifications.
Check and post
TSG System Information Utility - found here.
Post the Minidump files
Create a new folder on the desktop and call it dumpfiles [or something similar]

Look in c:\windows\minidump
Copy the last 4 minidump files to that folder.
Close the folder and right click on it and select Send To Compressed [zipped] Folder.
Windows will compress the file and then save the new zipped file in the same location.

Use the 'Manage attachments' in the 'Go Advanced' reply window below to upload that zip file here as an attachment.

I have an Inspiron 17-7779, from time to time while playing some what graphic intensive games on it will just go black, but the laptop stays on. The remedy I have found for this is tapping the power button on the side, letting it stop running and then tapping it again allowing it to cycle through the lock screen and resume right where I left off without even disconnecting me from the internet.
what is the world is causing this and how can I prevent it.

Hello, I've recently bought a new computer, about three weeks ago or something like that.

Here's the specs:
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium Service Pack 1
System Manufacturer: Acer
System Model: Aspire M5640
Processor: Intel Core Duo 2.40 GHz
Memory (RAM): 3 GB
System-type: 32-bit operating system
Graphics Card: NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GS
Storage: 500 GB
Monitor: Acer x193w

The problem is, is that my monitor will randomly go black. The monitor will stay on, as the little blue light stays on, but the only way I can get the picture back is by shutting the monitor off and turning it back on. I've also noticed that it sometimes blinks. There is a possibility that it's the power cord, as my mouse cord is located near the power cord and I have a feeling that maybe my moving of the mouse could be moving the power cord, because I took my hand and placed it on the monitors power cord and it was pretty sensitive. It's either that or the drivers for the video card are really out of date (see below paragraph) or there's some more wrong than just those two possibilities.

When running DirectX Diagnostic Tool, I noticed that my drivers for my video card are from 6/11/07, and I just went on NVIDIA's website and found that there are drivers from last month!.. So I'm going to update them, in fact I've already have and just have to restart.. I will tell you if it happens again even with the driver updates.

I've also checked the Wind... Read more

I am stumped on this one. My HP pavilion dv6 turns on, gets past the BIOS, screen goes black. If I leave it on I can tell it's working in the background, because eventually the wireless icon flips on. After that, I can press the sleep mode key, wake it up, and then after a moment of displaying everything fine it switches off. Also, it appears that when I shake it after the screensaver comes on (at which point the screen flips off) it will again display momentarily before switching the screen off. I dual boot Ubuntu, same issue, still the occasional moment of functionality.

Removing the battery and doing a hard reset doesn't help, can't boot to safe mode, can't change graphics drivers since I can't see anything. Ideas?

After having my HP Pavilion dv7 for slightly over a year (and just out of warranty), my screen has started to randomly go black - and there is no response from ctrl-alt-del, Esc, mouse movement or anything. It doesn't sound like it shuts down (all power, volume, etc. lights stay on), but doesn't respond unless I shut down and reboot. It is happening more and more frequently and most recently, the computer froze and the screen went slightly scrambled (like a digital tv would during a storm). It didn't go black that time, but shortly after it froze, I shut it down.

There is a possibility that this could be related to a time when the laptop was left on a pillow and shut down from overheating, but that could be a coincidence as well.

Any ideas? It operates on Windows Vista.

I've been getting the blue screen of death several times a week, if not several times a day, for several months now. It almost always comes when I am surfing the internet, especially--but not particularly--when I'm accessing video sites such as Hulu or MSN Video, although I don't even need to be playing something in such sites--if the window's even up, it will likely give a blue screen somewhere in the next hour. Lately, though, just running a browser can cause it to blues creen.

My blue screen says at the top something to the effect of: driver-not-less-or-equal; I've never been fast enough to catch the specific numbers, but I can try if they're needed.

I've tested this in the latest versions of: IE, FF, Opera, Flock, and Safari and all equally cause a blue screen crash.

I have an Acer E380 8 month old system with:
Vista SP1
AM2 Socket MB (I believe, and don't know the exact model)
Athlon 64 X2 4400+ @ 2.31 GHz
NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 (I now just installed a NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT and it did not remedy anything)
Realtek High Definition audio
320 GB Western Digital HD
Came with 250W PSU (I put in a 750W PSU to try some upgrades with the new graphics card, but somehow that combination gave more blue screens so I took both of them out)
I have about 6 USBs hooked up drawing various amounts of power and I use a Wacom tablet as my main mouse/input, but the problem started way before that...so don't know if that means anything.

Hi dgal. . .

Welcome... to your first thread in the TSF Vista Support Forum.

I see that you have been a member since last November, but this is your first thread and post. Sorry it had to be under a BSOD watch. Let's see if we can locate the cause.

I need some items and I have a few things for you as well. There is a zip file attached to this post containing a batch file named minidump-msinfo32.bat. Please download it and extract it to your desktop. Right-click on the desktop batch file icon and select Run as Administrator. The black "DOS" command screen will appear and scroll followed by the smaller Vista screen while msinfo32 runs. Give it a few minutes, then go to your documents folder where there should be a new folder named TSF_08-21-08 containing the dump files (with names similar to Mini082008-01.dmp), a text file and the msinfo32 NFO file. Zip the entire folder up and attach to your next post.

In the interim, please check WERCON - Windows Problem Reports and Solutions as it usually does contain information on the system crashes that may prove to be helpful.
START | type wercon.exe into the start search box | right-click on wercon.exe under programs above | run as admin | view Problems to Check & Problem History.

Also check the Device Manager for any red/yellow flags.
START | type dev man into the start search box | right-click on Device Manager up top under programs | run as admin

Regards. . .

About 2 months ago I bought a Hp G70-460US Laptop that I've been running Vista Home Premium on and it was working perfectly until earlier today when I started to get random blue screens of death. At first I thought it was just a random crash from running too many programs, but it started to blue screen ever more frequently. Earlier I restored it back to 2 weeks prior but I was unable to run programs efficiently and it still blue screened, so I backed-up all that was important onto an Ipod and did a complete system restore to the factory settings, which took about an hour, and at which point it blue screened at startup before even getting to the administrator log-in screen. I've now attempted to boot it into safe mode, however it no longer even recognized that windows is even installed and asks for it to be, and when booted regularly, it just shows a black screen. I'm fairly certain it may be a driver issue, however seeing as I can no longer boot the computer to get the blue screen, it's difficult to check what the problem actually is now. I've never had this problem before and I'm not much of a computer wiz, so I'm not sure what I should be doing to fix it. Does anyone have prior knowledge or possibly some insight on how to fix this problem? It would be greatly appreciated. I haven't given much information other than the problem itself, so if some is needed, just let me know. Also I'm new to this forum, so if this thread is in the wrong place, I apologize. Hello Werty789,
Welcome to Vista Forums!

I think that there was a little glitch that turned big (sounds weird i know).
But since you backed up all of your files thats super. I would suggest you do a clean installation of your version of vista. This way, you can have a fresh start and hopefully your BSOD will be gone. Also, make sure you allow windows to update itself after installation so it downloads and installs all the proper updates.

Please help! I am new to this forum. I tried to follow a tread on this but it got so confussing. Does someone have a step by step reply? Issue is Blue screen "A driver has overrun a stack-based buffer". Its on my teen son's PC (need I say more). System has been down for months got tierd of working on it till now. The begining:
1) System starts and said it had two spywares running at same time. After 4 mins the system would freeze, not giveing much time to do anything
2) I started in safe mode and removed my Nortons since I could not this "other" spyware. After a reboot windows said it removed a few malice files. Forgot the the files for this "other" spyware" but it had a tool bar on IE and ended with (4.1?)
3) System worked fine. However as I tried to install a new antivirus I found that neither of my CD/ DVD drives would work (device manger, would not let me update driver). I even moved the drives to the other IDE controller but got the same thing. After two days I found someone who gave me step by step insrtuctions to remove two reg files. Got the drives to work.
4) Now I have this blue screen message. I have removed one by one each hardware item and I still get the problem.

Please help me! John

Laptop is a nearly new Fujitsu 1510D, running XP Pro, SP2. It has been doing service as a desktop replacement (traveling for months), and thus is on most of the day, I close the lid only at night, this puts it into hibernation.

I wasn't doing anything in particular - was just composing an email in Thunderbird - when the screen went completely, utterly white from top to bottom. No keystrokes changed this, but on reboot it seems to be working fine.

I did some research but none of the problems were definitely the cause of this. The laptop has shown absolutely no indications of either overheating (the fan is on though) or some other display problem. It's been running for some hours since the lid was opened this morning. Therefore, I'm not sure if this is a hardware or software problem.

Anybody experienced this before? From my research, it seems that white-screening is specifically a laptop issue...

Oh, and I do have AV software and spyware protection - running a full AVG test, so far nothing (not that I expect this is a virus but it's always good to check).

Thanks for any help!

I own a Gateway MD2614u and it has been true to me for the last 2 years, but now it has a little problem. The screen turns black and will not come back on unless I hold down the button and restart the computer. It is not the backlight on the screen and it is not the screen itself. I hooked an external monitor to it to confirm and it made that screen black as well. I was using Windows 7 Ultimate X64 on the machine however I reverted it back to Vista Home Premium X64. The problem reoccured even with its intended operating system. Does anyone have any ideas what the cause of the problem is? I don't believe it is the cable or the monitor.

A:Laptop screen goes black randomly

It may be that the GPU is overheating or failing. Try running something like FurMark to stress the GPU. If that causes it to go back quickly, there's a good chance that the GPU is the problem. For most laptops, this is not something you can fix short of replacing the entire motherboard.

Allow me to illustrate my problems. Just today, I have noticed that during random intervals of time, when I am using Opera to browse the net whilst watching youtube and what not, I would experience a random pop-up windows (sometimes white and sometimes black) but all of them seem to just "appear" and "disappear" within a second. As the pop-up just flashes up and disappears, I have no way to capture a screen-shot of the window.

I have scanned my computer using Malwarebytes 3.0.6 (Premium), Hitmanpro, AdwareCleaner, Windows Defender, and SuperAntiSpyware and all of them came out green. I am hoping that there is no infection, but just to be sure, I would like the professionals here to help me analyse my logs from both Farbar and RTKill.

Hi there,

I'm looking for some advice on a problem I'm having. I've had a look around the web and I've found some posts with the same issues however I can't find anything that is specific to the problems I'm having.

For the last few months, I've been experiencing random black screens that last a few seconds before video signal is restored. When the monitor comes back it's as if the signal has completely reconnected (rather than just showing a black screen).

I generally use a dual monitor set-up however it is only the second monitor that loses the connection. This monitor is connected through the DVI port and the monitor that is connected through the HDMI port never blinks, which lead me to believe this was either a monitor issue or a DVI port issue. When the HDMI monitor is used as a single monitor (rather than dual), this does not disconnect.

However, when I hook the PC up to my TV through HDMI and use it as a single monitor, this does occur the black screens which happen on my second monitor meaning it's not a monitor issue or a specific port issue.

This happens both under load and during general use such as browsing the internet or even just idle at the desktop. I've tried various drivers on the Nvidia GTX 980 in question however all giving the same problem.

I was fairly adamant that this was a GPU issue and as a result sent the unit back while it was under warranty. While this card was being repaired I bought a cheap... Read more

For the past few weeks my laptop display has randomly gone black while I'm doing things on my computer. No matter what I try to do through touching the track pad will do anything to change the black screen. I took it to Geek Squad for them to only tell me they couldn't do anything so they were of no help. If anyone could help me out that would be extremely appreciated. Thanks

I am running Windows Vista Home Premium(6.0,6001 build) with SP1, it is a gateway laptop. The system model is M-1624 (not sure if it helps). The processor is a AMD Turion 64 X2 with 2 GB memory. Every once in a while the laptop screen will go to a black screen. I am not doing anything that uses a lot of graphics but I am actively using Word 2013. The backlight is clearly still on when the screen goes black. I cannot get the laptop to respond in any way noticeably while this happens other than to hit the  button, wait until the w button starts to blink, then hit the power button again. When I do this the screen comes back on. Also when the screen comes back on it resumes to right where I left of. I have scanned for virus's and found none. I have also changed the sleep and power settings to try and fix it to no avail. What is wrong with my laptop?

Hi @TravisG,  Welcome to the HP Forums!  It is a terrific place to find answers and tips! For you to have the best experience in the HP forum I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide:Learn How to Post and More. I grasp that while you are using your notebook the display go blank or black and become unresponsive.  You are not using and graphic intensive progams, ut just using word.  To regain control you must press the power button and wait for the light to start blinking and then press the power button again.  When you do this the screen comes back on and you are exactly where you left off.   You have scanned for viruses and malware, but none were located. You have also tried changing the power setting to no avail.   Have you done all your Windows updates? Have you ran the  HP Support Assistant ? Here is a link to  HP PCs - Sleep and Hibernate Issues (Windows 10, 8) that could help.  I would also test for hardware failures just to rule that out.   HP Notebook PCs - Testing for Hardware Failures (Windows 10, 8) Please reply back with your results. Thank you  for participating in the HP Forums! I have a user who ever since we added a second monitor to her setup has had an issue where they will both go black for a second before coming back on. She says this happens about every hour.

Laptop - Lenovo T450s on Thinkpad Ultradock
OS - Windows 7 Enterprise 64-bit
CPU - Intel i7 2.6ghz
Memory - 8gb
Monitors - ViewSonic VG2228WM-led

So far I have replaced the dock and power supply for the dock. Replaced the monitors, video cables (even replaced the 2nd VGA with a DVI-HDMI), and power cables. I have completely removed and reinstalled the video drivers for the laptop with reboots in between removal and reinstall.

Some new information today was that when the screens go black the power light stays blue (turns amber when no signal).

I am not sure if this is a profile issue or if the laptops motherboard is having issues because she never had the issue until the 2nd monitor was installed.

Any thoughts would be appreciated. I am just about to the point of a rebuild.

3 Days ago while I was playing Dota 2 my screen went black for one second and then it came back (the green led was on), later that night it happened again. The next day happened again when I was playing Star Conflict.

Today it did it like 10 times already, once while I was in firefox, rest in Star Conflict. At one particular map, where I had no problem playing yesterday. When I was facing a supernova (large burning fireball in space) the monitor went black then came back then black, when I turned the ship away the monitor was fine. I slowly moved the ship around to see when the screen goes black and when it reached the fire (or something beyond it).

Powered down pc, took it apart, cleaned it and checked if everything is connected nice and tight. It had some (a lot) of dust, carefully removed it, cleaned the cpu and the vga fans both. Started pc, started firefox, winamp and star conflict (these 3 program were running when I had the black screen), I got this black screen for a second in the garage of the game.

Right now im going to reinstall my graphics card driver, will update with result.

In the meanwhile. What can cause this? How to fix? I googled it before I came here, some people claimed its dead transistors on the motherboard, some said its memory fault, someone else said its the cables, some other dude said its vga and go replace it....none of these guys had a solution.

A:Screen goes black for a few secs randomly

Reinstalled the vga driver, now whenever I start a game the screen goes black and comes back after a few seconds, then goes black again and again and again. I have music in the background. If I close the game with alt+f4 the screen fixes.

Games I tried: Dota2, Rift, World of Tanks, World of Warcraft, Kotor2, Star Conflict
I have other games too but didnt bother with them.

So, what now? If you tell me to buy a new vga I will stick a screwdriver in your arsehole. I have no money to buy a new one.

So I bought a new laptop but after 20 minutes or so the screen goes black (sometimes with a startup of an app or clicking something). The computer still runs so I can put it to sleep but when I wake it up it immediately goes black. I hooked it up to an external monitor and it worked on that. I thought it was a graphics problem, but now I'm not so sure. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling my Nvidia and my Intel HD Graphics Drivers but that didn't seem to work. I can still hear sound out of the speakers. The problem didn't happen at first, after about a week and a half the problem started occuring. I also tried to boot up from safe mode to no avail. The computer was not overheating according to the CPU temperature. The laptop is always on a charger. Any possible fixes?

Hello, I have a dell latitude 6430u with windows 8 pro.
I have a very strange and very annoying problem - the screen seemingly randomly goes black with no cursor, anywhere in windows and then comes back again. Sometimes it remains black for just a second sometimes for twenty seconds. And it may continue going back and forth for up to maybe 5 times or more.
The computer is brand new (two weeks old). A this started about a week ago. But in the beginning it didn't go black randomly, but rather changed resolution randomly. I tried updating the graphics drivers and other drivers and maybe that caused the newer problem.
I would be grateful for any help,

I have been following different topics in this forum, I did try the "Verifier", but everything was fine.
I have no clue if this is graphic card, cable och screen problem, i have nothing to go on.

I may also add, this is happening randomly. But It could be worse when playing games!

Graphics card: Nvidia Geforce GTX 760
Screen: AOC G2460PQU 24"

I did try to remove and reinstall the drivers for my graphics card, also reinstalling the computer. But the problem is still there?

so I just bought a laptop (Core i7 6500u 2.60ghz, 8gb ddr4, 1TB, Intel HD 520 4gb total, 15.6? LED, dvdrw, Windows 10 64 bit O.S) , the screen randomly goes black for a second, sometimes this may happen in succession , sometimes just once(several times a day). I returned to the store to have it checked and they told me it may be because windows 10 is still updating. i let them do it then came back. But still the problem is still there. i had to take video everytime i use the unit so i can show them . 2nd time i went back, they said they would reset it. afterwards it was still turning black randomly. 3rd time going back to the store they told me they  would send it to HP to have it looked at. but then after several days they texted me and said the unit is ok now. i was informed before that they will send it to hp support but they actually did not. they just had their technician look at it. i dont know what he did but the unit still has the problem but its not as bad like before. the screen occasionally goes black for a moment atleast once a day. can you please help me . i can also send some video of the screen turning black if it can help. i dont know if the problem is due to windows 10 or the unit itself.....thank you

It's only portions at a time. If I drag and click it does even more of it. I've tried doing a clean install of my graphic drivers. Not sure if this is a malware issue or something else. I apologize if it's in the wrong section.

Hello everyone, get ready to have a little bit of reading!

So my problem is actually that my screen (both my screens cuz I got 2) turns black randomly. I am in a CS GO game or playing Eve online and my screens just "stop working". I can close and re-open my main screen and it says "no signal". BUT the computer is still working fine, I was on Discord with friends and they were telling me where to go...didint work out pretty well, but that said, it looks like my GPU crash or something?

Happened twice in 30 min and now it just happened once...
I had another problem 1-2 months ago, well I had that problem for about 6 month or so. Randomly my computer was freezing, image freeze, sound freeze, ALL freeze. (used to happen like 1-2 times a month) Now it seems that it wont freeze (I am gaming less I suppose). But I got this new problem or black screen.

Oh and at the same time I am writing this, I was trying to update my GPU drivers, and it popped an error and close the Nvidia menu...
Well actually I think it might be my GPU that is about to die, but how can I test it? How can I be sure it's the GPU? It could be the power supply getting old and not giving enough power? It could be the motherBoard...maybe?

Here is my build :

Hey Tech Support Guy's users,

Yesterday, I got back to my house, and went on the computer for a short while, then while looking on the internet, my Inspiron 1525's screen died on me. Not only my main screen, but also my other monitors as well, saying there was no signal. I was assuming that it is a dying Video Card, but I wanted to have more insight regarding my question. Is my fear correct, or it is the drivers? I haven't updated my drivers since 4 months ago, so I doubt it is my drivers.

Any who, if you need more information from me, please ask away and I will respond as quickly as possible.

P.s. I wasn't do sure if I was suppose to put it on Hardware or Window 7 section. Felt like, it could be a window 7 error.
