Windows 8 Auto Start

Q: Windows 8 Auto Start

I installed Windows 8 on a partition, how do I get back to my previously installed windows 7?

Preferred Solution: Windows 8 Auto Start

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows 8 Auto Start

Windows 8 should automatically create a boot selection screen. Then you just select the other OS to boot into that instead of Windows 8.

I use Windows ME as my OS. When working offline, on occasion ME will start to connect to the internet automatically, in other words I do not have to click OE or IE. I can be working away in word and all of a sudden I am connected to the internet. Once it connected to the internet while the screensaver was operating. Any suggestions?

Hiya and welcome

go here and download AddAware www.lavasoftusa.com
Install and run, ensuring that Deep Registry Scan is enabled. Remove all except for any references to Web3000 or new.net. If you're unsure, copy/paste the list here.

Whilst you're there, download and install RefUpdate to get the latest updates

Also, lets see whats behind the scences. Go to Run and type MSINFO32
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs. Copy/paste the list.

Also, get a firewall, if you haven't got one.

They have a free one.

Skype on 8.1 is driving me bonkers. When I look in the task manager->start up its not listed.

However, I then get messages and calls - so it must be running

Of course, with the tile version there are no settings that I can find to turn the darn thing off and it doesn't appear in the system tray.

How can I please take control over skype so that it launches when I want it to?

A:windows 8.1 and skype auto start up

You could uninstall the Windows 8 app (right click on the start screen select Uninstall) and download the desktop version if you prefer. Download Skype for Windows

I prefer the desktop version personally.

I'm not sure if i should have asked this in the apps forum or this one... I have a couple of programs on my computer like steam, Windows Messenger, skype, and a few others that like to start immediately when i start my computer. The problem is that i only use these programs every once in a while, and i would prefer it if i could just start them manually when i wanted to use them. I looked through the options and settings in a couple of places, but didn't see anywhere to turn off the auto-start. Is it something i have to do in the registry?

Well, this is kind of an oddball situation (and somewhat minor) but any suggestions or comments would be welcome!

Since upgrading to XP SP2 I've got a stubborn program ("CoolTabs") that sometimes fails to start with Windows. It's startup specs are pretty much routine (Path: c:\program files\cooltabs\cooltabs.exe) / Location: Startup Folder). It's hard to imagine that SP2 is at fault yet prior to the upgrade I never had any problems... I'm baffled!

I've been having trouble with my Vista home premium pc.

I downloaded the service pack 2 for vista. I only ran a fix (not sure what the fix was) to get rid of something that kept showing up on my anti virus software.

Anyways while the fix was working it restarted my computer. The service pack installed 2 of 3. After it installed 2 it started again presenting me with my problem.

The windows recovery screen shows up and gives me the option of starting normally of running the automatic repair. I've tried the auto repair and it doesnt work. I went onto the advanced options after that which gives me the option of system restore, command prompt, complete restore.

System restore doesnt work as it says no restore point has been created.

I've tried going into safe mode and that doesnt work. Last known configuration also doesnt work. I really dont know what to do and REALLY dont want to lose my files again!.

If anyone could help i'd be much appreciated. I've been without the pc for about a week now and didnt realise how much i rely on it.

Thanks again in advance.

Hi. I'm new to this forum, and need help! Yesterday the latest Vista updates were downloaded to my computer. I didn't restart my computer after the updates were downloaded. When I turned on my laptop this morning, the Startup Repair window comes up because windows failed to start. I've run the repair several times, and it's unable to repair.
It lists the following problem details:
Problem Event Name: StartupRepariV2
Problem Signature 01: AutoFailover
Problem Signature 02: 6.0.6000.163686.6.0.6001.1800
Problem Signature 03: 5
Problem Signature 04: 262148
Problem Signature 05: BadDriver
Problem Signature 06: BadDriver
Problem Signature 07: 0
Problem Signature 08: 3
Problem Signature 09: WrpRepair
Problem Signature 10: 10
OS Version: 6.0.6000.
Local ID: 1033

So, I see that part (if not all) of the problem is bad drivers. Why is this so and how can I fix it? I have a Gateway M-Series laptop (about 10 months old). Thanks!

I did not recognise the programme as one I had installed.
Research indicates that Au_.exe may be a virus in many hidden forms.
I cannot see it in Windows uninstaller, Revo uninstaller, Malwarebytes anti malware or HitmanPro ( all latest versions ).
I am aware that this forum has identified and assisted others with Au.... shall I follow the instructions in earlier posts or is it advisable that we start from scratch.
I have recently needed to download free dns service/s and trial version of dyndns for a security DVR camera setup; I consider any problems may have occurred as a result of this work.
I welcome any help that is possible and would welcome very simple instructions.

I am looking for a free, easy to configure utility that will auto start the index.html for my website on a CD.

I tried http://www.whirlywiryweb.com/q/shellexe.asp, but it didn't work.

my autorun.inf file looks like this:

[autorun] open=shellexe.exe index.html

and is named autorun.inf

I have that file, the index file and the shellexe.exe file all in the root CD, and I made sure to close the session and to close the CD, but nothing happens when I insert the CD.

Can anyone tell me what I am doing wrong, or, a program that gives better directions?

I'm hoping someone can find an answer to my vista problems. It's on a Compaq (HP) CQ60 laptop with Home Premium.

1. My low battery alerts don't work properly. I have it set to alert me of low battery at 12% ish and then hibernate at 7%. I have only ever seen the low alert once I think so it just hibernates with no warning. I get the low battery warning triangle on the battery tray icon but no pop ups. Also there is no 'Time Remaining' just a percentage but I think this is a problem that doesn't have a solution.

2. Occasionally my start bar (which I always have set to auto hide) stops hiding. It sits on top of the status bars of my programs and is really annoying. I can't seem to see any pttern to why/when it does it. Sometimes turning off auto hide and then turning it back on will fix it but this doesn't always work.

3. After resuming from sleep MSN/Windows Live won't work. It is still running but it logs me out and won't log back in. It's effectively a dead window that looks like it's running but no buttons work. Only way to get it back is kill it in task manager & restart it.

Hope someone can come up with some ideas?

Thanks a lot

Hi  jimr56 ,
Please try booting into safe mode with networking and check if the problem exists.Try and update the system BIOS from support.dell.com and the chipset, video and touchpad drivers just to be sure that there are no outdated drivers. Also run diagnostic from F12  and share the results.

Major network problems

Been scouring the web for the NativeWifi Filter drivers for windows 7

Cannot start my WLAN Auto Config Service due to NativeWifi Filter not installed/unable to start

It keeps giving me an error saying that it doesn't exist so I restarted and now it's not even listed in the non plug-and-play section in device manager with hidden devices shown

had no problem starting up NDIS Usermode I/O Portal as per advice in other threads where it is stated to start BOTH NDIS Usermode etc. AND NativeWifi Filter

But mine has somehow disappeared from the list and would not start before that point

It was a code 24 IIRC "The device is not present, is nor not working properly or does not have all its drivers installed" - pulled that from another service that does not work

Qos Packet Scheduler is also not functioning (where I got the error from which is the same as I WAS getting with NativeWifi Filter)

If anyone has the drivers to either of these that would be greatly appreciated as I cannot use the net on my computer, so am using my brothers for anything internet related atm

Cheers =)

I would like to completely disable auto run / auto play in Windows Media Player 12 on Windows 7, and I cannot find a way to do so. I've searched the web endlessly, and there are lots of suggestions, but nothing works. I have disabled every type of auto run / auto play I can find, but if Windows Media Player is open and I insert a flash drive, CD, or DVD, whatever I'm playing is interrupted by what was inserted even if it's not media. Just a plain, blank flash drive does this.

Has anyone else been able to figure this out?

I have Word 2002, SP3, for Windows Office XP Pro.

My problem is I want to permanently turn OFF the autocorrect options (all of them: correct initial capitals, correct first letters of days, etc etc, autoformat, as well as auto text and auto type).

Yes, I have unchecked all the boxes in Tools > Autocorrect Options, the problem is I have to painstakingly go though all the boxes every time I open Word and uncheck them. My setups are not remembered.

I can't figure out how to make these options stay set this way.

I've tried installing the Office Resource Kit and setting a system policy (though I am the only user on this PC), but no success.

I had to rebuild my system a month ago -- before that, I never had any problems, Word seemed to remember exactly my preferred set up and saved autocorrect options etc to the normal template.

I checked the normal template and it is in Doc Settings folder where it should be.

I searched the forums and Word help but can't seem to find any advice, mainly because most people usually run these options and they only wish to modify the instances where they apply, rather than permanently disable them.

Please help! Much appreciated! Thanks!

My CD Rom won't auto start!! A simple query I think. I am new to the set up systems and cannot get the CD drive to auto run when a disk is inserted. The Hardware profile and 'My Compter' links offer a range of startup options but it refuses to cooperate! Any ideas??

A:My CD Rom won't auto start!!

All discs, or just a certain type? Auto Insert Notification is enabled by default, but only for discs with Autoplay features. In XP, right click the drive and drag to Properties-->Autoplay and select the appropriate action in the supplied field. In Win9.x/Me, just right click the cd-rom drive in Device Manager-->Properties-->Settings and click the checkbox. In Win2kPro, to disable/enable, Start-->Run-->gpedit.msc. Under Computer Configuration-->Administrative Templates-->System, there is the option to disable, or enable (if its disabled).

That said, you may be referring to file associations, like what program opens when a audio disc, DVD, etc is inserted. In XP, its stated above. In Win2k, you can change this by right-clicking My Computer, drag to Explore. Then drag to Tools-->Folder Options-->File Types. Now, depending on what file is opening, the association to the needed program to run is listed below. Just highlight the file, and either confirm the change, or choose another program to run. HTH!

I am new to this forum, so please everyone, excuse the limited knowledge I have on pc matters!

I have Vista & downloaded software for my webcam. That was fine but I decided to use Windows messager live as the one to communicate. That downloaded fine, except that it set itself to Autostart. This I was able to disable so that I use my webcam when needed but I noticed at the beginning when it was at autostart, Internet Explorer automatically started up as well!

Now I've disabled Windows Live Messenger, I cannot find anywhere where the IE starts up from! I've searched Event Viewer, Start up on Winpatrol & task manager but it does not show IE as an Autostart.

Where can I find this file which starts IE as soon as I boot up please? At first it was just a minor issue, but now it is really annoying because I cannot start anything until IE pops open & I close it.

Hope someone can help, & many thanks in advance.

A:IE Auto start annoys me!!!

You can try this....

To find IE -->click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Internet Explorer.

To reset Internet Explorer settings, follow these steps:
1. Start Internet Explorer.
2. Click Tools on the toolbar, and then click Internet Options.
3. On the Advanced tab, click Reset, and then click OK.
4. Test Internet Explorer to determine whether the problem is resolved.

A:Can't get programs to Auto Start...

Check whether the shortcut you created uses the same command as the the original shortcut for outlook in the start menu (right-click that shortcut => properties).

Are these limited accounts ? Make sure outlook was installed for all users and make sure you can run outlook manually by typing the command next to "target" in the shorcut's properties (shortcut tab) in start => run.

Have you tried scheduled tasks ? Outlook should be in the list of programs, else browse for it. Set it to run at logon.

Outlook may need to be run as admin, change the shortcut you created for runas /user:domainname\username"c:\wherever outlook is installed\outlook.exe" (replace domainname, username and the outlook path with the right values) and see how it goes.
(note that this would be the same as if the admin had run outlook, the users will probably be able to create/delete/modify accounts)

Here's what's going on. I want to leave my PC torrenting overnight, but I have to turn off my PC before I leave. So, I want to start a timer that will automatically start my PC up at 11:30, and shutdown at 5:30. Simple? Well, I have afew issues.

1: The login screen.
I have no password on my account, and everytime I resume from Hibernation, it takes me to the login screen, where it needs me to click on my account. When on this screen, none of the programs are doing anything. So, I need to get rid of that.

2: I have an auto shutdown in my Task Scheduler, and it works (Thankfully), so I don't need to worry about that. However, I need some way to wake it up, I cant find anything in Task Scheduler to do that. I tried in my BIOS, but whenever I enable that, it automatically starts up the PC when it has finished shutting down. I don't really want to buy, or download any 3rd party software for this, however, if the worst comes to the worst, I may think about downloading something.

That's it, thanks for reading, and thanks in advance for any advice or help.

Hi LapFox and welcome to Windows 7 Forums

Do you have an option in your BIOS called Resume By RTC Alarm or similar? Enable it, and you can set the time and date that you want your system to wake up.

As for logging in, see Log On Automatically at Startup

My LiteOn CD/DVD/Reader/Burner has given me several years of excellent service. However it is exhibiting a couple of symptoms which seem to indicate that it?s time for a new one (unless you feel that a firmware change or tweak in Windows XP Home) will solve the problem.

In short, it won?t auto-play anymore. It started doing this in the middle of an afternoon session. It responds to commands given it such as Start-Run- *.exe, Control Panel double click on CD *.exe or commands from burning software (Nero). Any kind of disk such as music, DVD, installation, slide show with auto start, etc. has to be started manually.

Another less important, but interesting, symptom is that if I go to My Computer-DVD-RW Drive-right click-?eject? it works OK, but if I then tell it to ?load? it doesn?t respond.

If I go to My Computer-DVD-RW Drive-Properties-Autoplay and select ?Prompt me each time to choose an action? it has no effect. If I select ?Select an action to perform? it has no effect either. Selecting ?default? doesn?t help. I click the ?apply? key each time, by the way.

It certainly would appear as though auto play has been turned off, somehow, except that the ?load? function doesn?t work either which leads me to believe that something is bad in the device.

I would appreciate your comments or assistance.

When I reboot the computer, after windows XP logs in, I get a windows installer automatically starting for word perfect 12 (whch was already installed) and every time I cancel it, it starts again. After about 8 times it stops. Then it trys it for another program called sonic, (which is also already installed) and I have to cancel it like 8 times. It slows down the start up significantly, and may be the case of other problems.

All pictures, gif's, jpg's, any form of an image online, shows up as a pink box. All pics that are on the pc are fine, but online, even the google sign is a pink box.

Every once in a while when online, a empty Internet Explorer window shows up. No address bar or anything. Just a window labeled I.Explorer and thats it.

Any info would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

I want to be able to run anti virus and spyware killer and diskeeper on the kids pc but they never remember to do it and I dont have the time to do it . My question sence I can program a time for anti virus and spyware and diskeeper to run is there a way to turn on the pc and shut it off at certain time? Can you do it from Hibernation or standby?

A:Auto start up and shut down?

The BIOS may have an "Alarm Clock" setting that can power on the PC at a specified time. That should also bring it out of hibernation.
Turning it off again could be tricky. AVG 7.5 can be set to turn off when it finishes scanning, but that has to be manually checked after the scan starts.
Easiest way is to have a batch file check to see if the scans have completed by checking to see if the AntiVirus/Spyware/diskkeeper processes are still running. When the processes stop, then shutdown the PC.

You could also just have it shutdown at a specific time, but the scans may not be finished.

If the software creates a scheduled task job in the Scheduled Task folder (Control Panel | Scheduled tasks) there is a setting to Wake the Computer to run the task. Right click the task, goto the Settings tab and check the box.

Otherwise, you'd have to check each program to see if it has an option to wake the PC, or bring it out of standby.
