Computer Crash. Found Virus Responsible. Can't delete source folder.

Q: Computer Crash. Found Virus Responsible. Can't delete source folder.

My computer crashed less than a half hour ago. Just turned itself off. I was able to reboot and didn't lose anything. After some searching I discovered the source of the problem: US Tech Support Framework which is a partner company with My Clean PC which is a scam. I started to download My Clean PC months ago, but discovered before I finished that it was a scam and quickly aborted the download and deleted everything. Apparently, this US Tech Support Framework downloaded itself on my computer October 14th, long after the near run in with My Clean PC. And my computer didn't have any problems until today. Needless to say, I quickly ran my anti-malware program and anti-virus program, as well as deleted US Tech Support Framework. Then I began the task of thoroughly searching my computer to delete every single file, anything related to US Tech Support Framework. The last thing I found of it was in this folder: Config.msi. in OS [C:]. I deleted everything related to US Tech inside the folder, and then tried to delete the folder itself. By the way, the folder was created the same day that US Tech found its way on my computer. But I'm not able to delete the folder. I've tried everything. I've claimed ownership on the folder, made sure I had all the permissions. I am the administrator, but every time I try to delete I get an error message that says I require permission from the administrators to make changes to this folder.

I'm at a complete loss and I want all traces of this scam/virus gone. Any help and suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Computer Crash. Found Virus Responsible. Can't delete source folder.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

You should've try to uninstall it first before deleting it with an anti-virus. But if you already deleted mostly everything already except the locked folder, i suggest getting Unlocker.

You might want to give Unlocker a try. It deleted a folder I was unable to delete any other way on my Win 7 Pro X64 system.

If you have Win 7 X64 then you will need the 64bit version of Unlocker.

I have the anti-virus protection service provided by Yahoo. It found 3 files infected by the virus when I ran it to scan my computer. However, it does not give me the option to kill the virus or delete the files. The files/viruses are still in my computer. How do I delete the infected files? Do I need to get another (real?) virus protection software
or should the Yahoo version be sufficient? Thanks so much

Well, this is the first time that I have had to post here despite the numerous virus and malware infections I have had to deal with. For the first time the combination of CA AntiVirus and MalwareBytes has failed to clear a problem. CA Antivirus reports an infection of Vundo.CEH in a file "C:\Windows\system32\cyzystno.dll", and I cannot get this file deleted. CA-AV cannot quarintine the file, MWB cannot deal with it, Killbox cannot touch it (Rename function over-ridden by a system process), etc. There are no other viruses detected by the antivirus scan. I come waving my white flag and posting my log file. I consider myself an expert PC user, programmer and system builder, but I confess I am beat. I'm planning on having a backup boot partition from now on to better facilitate the deletion of such files in the future. <sigh>...I remember when Vundo was easy.

Here is the log - I suspect a link with the unnamed BHO entry:

I recently restored my computer and while trying to delete the windows.old folder it creates in the C: drive I made the unfortunate mistake of hitting cancel. While the contents if the folder are no longer inside, the folder itself won't delete and gives me this message "Could not find this item. This is no longer located in C:\. MSE found a threat on my data drive, I chose to have it removed and it froze permanently. I tried to manually delete that folder but it just says "discovering items" and then nothing happens. No error messages...

I have tried going into safe mode to remove the folder without luck. I have even used a utility called DP Wiper to remove it and didn't work.

I've googled this and haven't found anything on it. Most people have access / permissions problems with deleting a file / folder but this one doesn't have to do with that. Any help much appreciated!

I have tried searching for a solution but nothing works. I have this empty .ini file with no name in this folder I want to delete that is located on a memory card.

Everytime I try to delete I get an error saying that it could not find this item. I tried using a program that another topic on this problem said to use which was called 'Unlocker' but it didn't work.

Can someone help me?

A:Can't Delete Folder - Item Not Found

The name of the file you want to delete is named ".ini"? Nothing before the dot (period)?

Have you opened a command prompt to view a dir listing to see how it looks from that context? Might be helpful to add the switches /a/x and post a screenshot.

A:Need Help finding a system32 folder to delete all viruses found.

The 'System32' folder is located within the Windows folder, but you won't be able to delete the folder. If you were able to somehow delete the folder you would be left with a useless laptop and no choice but an OS reinstall.

Why not let your antivirus program remove the bugs on its own? Thats what it is designed to do. It will only remove what it needs to remove to get rid of your viruses.

Hi joedoaYour log shows that you are seriously behind on windows updates. It is essential that you update your windows before we continue to help you as the infections could reoccur. Go to http://www.windowsupdate.com and if it asks to install software, let it. Then click on the Scan link and let it do its thing. When its done you will see on your left a section called critical updates. Click on that section and install everything that you can. When it prompts you to reboot, do so. Then repeat this process again until there are no more critical updates listed. Then post a new log.You are running HijackThis from a ZIP file. You need to unzip HijackThis to a folder other than the Temp directory or Desktop. Unzip HijackThis! to it's own folder, e.g. c:/hjt .

Important!! HijackThis and GMER are also affected so I CAN NOT include a HijackThis or GMER log with my post.

This morning everything seemed to be working fine, I left for a couple hours and when I came back a few things had gone screwy and I assumed that some virus had taken hold while I was gone so I went to scan and discovered that all my security programs were dead. They ran for a few seconds before they closed. Upon trying to open them again I get the message that Windows can not access the specified device, path or file.

This is affecting Spyware Terminator, MalwareBytes and HijackThis.

I have no idea what is causing the problem as the virus didn't make itself known like the others I've dealt with. Only clue that something is wrong is the different problems that arose (open windows losing focus (solved), Aero theme being deactivated (mostly solved), security being broken)

Searching hasn't produced anything useful so I'm hoping I can find some help here.

Reboot to boot menu (tap continually F8 key as you restart computer) and choose safemode with networking, delete the files located within both your system32 folder, and your c: drive that you listed above.

Once deleted, empty the temporary files folder (press start, run, type in %tmp% and click ok) Go to symantec website and run an online scan.

After finished that, reboot to normal windows and re-run your symantec software scan.

You could have an older version of Java in your system that's still vulnerable to exploits. Try running this tool (JavaRa), which will clean out the old versions & make sure you have the latest version of Java.

If you want to be on the safe side, uninstall all of Java & then reinstall it.

Hello -

Is this an HP machine? That folder location is for HP MediaSmart DVD install cab files.

Seems like that may be a possible false positive. Contact Bitdefender support, or post in their support forums.

I don't know what this is, where it came from or what I should do with it.
Today, I noticed a file folder in the Downloads.
It is labeled "8.1", it is 9.83 MB and contains 30 files.  Attributes are set to Read-only.
Created Monday, August 24, 2015, 3:23 PM, so I was probably using the computer at that time
but I can't be sure.
All of the files are dated 12/28/2013 1:31 PM and are Cabinet Files.  One file is an MSI File.
This is a laptop running Windows Vista Business.
I use Avast AV.  Scan history shows a scan on August 21, 2015, results "no virus found."
And another Full System scan on August 29, 2015, again the results "no virus found."
Malware Bytes shows a scan on August 21, 2015 which identified a PUP name AmiUpdXP
which was quarantined.
So, hummmm.  Any idea what this is or what I should do with it?
Thanks much for your time and talents!

Here's the problem I'm having. This virus keeps popping up in McAffee on my computer: Downloader-ER, and its housed in 2 files (bridge[1].exe and bridge.exe) in 2 separate folders:

D:\Documents and Settings\My Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\KHYNCPYJ\bridge[1].exe

It won't let me delete or quarantine the files because they're in either hidden or read only folders, all I can do is hit the 'stop' button in McAffee. Even when I search in Windows, it can't find either file, and that's with the hidden files and folders being searched.

Now, when I go into D:\Documents and Settings\My Name Here\ there's no Local Settings folder, and when I go into D:\DOCUME~1\MYNAMEHERE~1.DAN\LOCALS~1\Temp\ there's no bridge.exe.

What I'd like to do is go into those folders and delete the files manually, but since the folders and files are hidden I can't get into them. How do I make my computer show me all of the files and folders in those particular folders so I can get rid of them?

I have a problem with my laptop. i'm running windows vista. everything starts 4 days ago when i download a crack and kapersky send me a warning that there was b.exe on my computer and msa.exe (I think). After that virus uninstall my kapersky, my internet explorer and all my spyware software (Spybot and adaware). I use f-secure rescue disk and kapersky rescue disk and kapersky found Packed.Win32.Krap.ag and Trojan.Win32.Qhost.mcf.

After this i was able finally to install malwarebytes and this one found Trojan.sirefef and trojan.Dropper.

computer is running a little bit better, i have the IE working again, but i still can not uninstall spybot or install again. Plus the annoying problem that everytime that my windos starts i have the trayapp.msi error, i tryied installing the hp spftware again and nothing.

I tryied averything and my computer still has something in it. That's why i ask you guys for your help. I already ordered the toshiba satellite recovery disks but that is my last resort.

I've tried going through the "takeown" process and just going into Properties/Security/Ownership.......but nothing seems to be letting me delete the folder.

Here are the errors I get after trying both:
1. An error occurred while applying security information to: C:\Program Files\AVAST Software\Avast
Access is denied
Contine Cancel

2. If you have just taken ownerhsip of this object, you will need to close and reopend this object's properties before you can view or change permissions.

I've already "deleted" the program, using Revo Uninstaller....but the folder still exists....and a constant reminder "YOU'RE AT RISK......YOUR AVAST ANTI-VIRUS HAS EXPIRED" is a non-stop annoyance.

Has anyone had this problem? Got the easy solution?

Thanks for any help.

I have a folder called public_html on my desk top which one of my clients websites was in, I deleted everything from inside it and then one folder was left, when I try and delete it I get a message "Could not find this item" I then try and delete the public_html folder and I get the same message.

I have tried pressing F5 to refresh my desktop but it is still there. I have tried restarting my computer and it is still there.

I don't know what else I could do, has anyone else experienced a problem like this and if they have resolved it could they explain how. It is quite annoying because I can't move or delete the folder.

My computer has been displaying some odd behaviors: Kaspersky isnt running daily at the time I tell it to, my screensaver sometimes comes on, sometimes doesnt, leaving my desktop open long after I have walked away.
I am quite meticulous about trying to keep my computer clean, but I have limited knowledge of what I am doing:
I have learned and gotten in the habits of doing the following: windows updates, running Kaspersky scans, running CCleaner, disc cleanup and defrags. My social media is limited in use, I dont open emails from people I dont trust, the jokes I read from friends and family is very limited and I RARELY open any jokes with attachments (if so, only by accident).
However, I have recently returned to school and have multiple powerpoints and word documents from instructor to save and print out as well as research topics that I have to contend to...

A:i have a folder in my computer.... 5a476f6022962dbf6f0ca2 that I want to delete.

Welcome to BC...
You can submit the file to VirusTotal - Free Online Virus and Malware Scan . It will be scanned by multiple security programs. That
should give you a better idea as to whether it is malware or not.
You can run the programs below to find and remove adware, malware and clean up the computer.
Use CCleaner to remove Temporary files, program caches, cookies, logs, etc. Use the Default settings. No need to use the
Registry Cleaning Tool...risky. Pay close attention while installing and UNcheck offers of toolbars....especially Google.
After install, open CCleaner and run by clicking on the Run Cleaner button in the bottom right corner.
CCleaner - PC Optimization and Cleaning - Free Download
Download Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware from Here
Double-click mbam-setup-2.X.X.XXXX.exe to install the application (X's are the current version number).
Make sure a checkmark is placed next to Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware, then click Finish.
Once MBAM opens, when it says Your databases are out of date, click the Fix Now button.
Click the Settings tab at the top, and then in the left column, select Detections and Protections, and if not already checked place a checkmark in the selection box for Scan for rootkits.

There is not way that you could remove it and still have the program working. The only option would be to hide the folder and hope your sister does not have show hidden files option on her folder view.

I downloaded and installed RJ TextEd to enable me to write scripts in a programming language named Davinci. Since I started using it, I have had the following problems on my ASUS laptop: I cannot shut down or restart the computer; I click on the Start menu > Shut Down and nothing happens
cntrl/alt/del does not do anything
The blue Fn keys do nothing

I have uninstalled RJ TextEd, and deleted it everywhere except for the folder in which the setup file used to be. When I try to delete it from Windows Explorer, I get this message:
"This action can't be completed because the folder or a file in it is open in another program."

I have ended the processes, from Task Manager in the Control Panel, that this application was running.

I have tried all four methods on this page: In Windows 7 getting error "the action can't be completed - Microsoft Answers
When I tried Method 4, after hiding and disabling all the items in the Services tab, I tried to reboot, and got a message saying, "System Configuration cannot reboot the computer."

There was no RJ TextEd file or folder in the Temp folder.

I downloaded Unlocker, tried to run its installer or executable (ARO2012) and nothing happened.

The problem seems to be that this RJ TextEd folder is open somewhere in my computer. Is this the problem that's preventing me from shutting down the computer? What can I do to fix this? Thanks!

Welcome to the Seven Forums!

Uninstall Unlocker (if you have not already done so). It is a nice tool to have. You need to 64bit version... but I would not try and install Unlocker while you computer is in this state. If you do opt to install Unlocker at a later date, see near the bottom of this post for some info.

1) Can you delete the folder in the safe mode?

Have you forced a shutdown via the power button?
(I'm just asking. I'm not suggesting that you do that.)

Try a forced "soft" shutdown (which is a bit kinder than forcing the computer off via the power button). Go to the Start Menu's search field and type in shutdown /f. That might get you a light box telling you that things need to close. If need be, click on the Force Close button.

Then restart into the safe mode and try to get rid of the folder that way.
2) You could try this version of a clean boot:
Troubleshoot Application Conflicts by Performing a Clean Startup
(As opposed to the version you linked to in those 4 things in that post.)
3) You could also run a tool that is normally used in getting rid of infections:
RKill Download
(Give it time to work)

That should end most (all?) non-essential things - then try to manually delete the folder.

I've had this issue with chrome where, I'll close it and reopen later to find the error "Chrome didn't shut down correctly, click Restore". I'm trying to delete the local google folder on my computer(then reinstalling) in the program files(x86) and It will not let me. Saying "Folder access Denied" I require permission, even though I'm the administrator. I came across this site:Take Ownership Of Files And Folders In Windows 8 where they offered a way to add a "Take ownership" option to my menu options and included a uninstall reg file. I already saw a similar thread on this site : Take Ownership - Add to Context Menu in Windows 8 but did not download from it b/c I did not know how to remove the reg file. I tried the take ownership from the first site and it didnt work, I used the uninstall reg file and now i'm frustrated and back to square one.

I can't even reinstall chrome at all b/c of some unspecified error, I just want to be able to delete the google folder on my computer to do a clean install.

A:Trying to delete google folder on my computer

Use Microsoft Install Clean Up to remove Chrome. Then install normally.

If you still want or need Take Ownership, just double click the downloaded file. You do not have to worry or think about anything with it after, besides using it when you want to. Easy as can be.

In some cases, you still have to grant your own account permission to manipulate the folder or files (as in delete for your case - that's write access) after you take ownership of them.

You should also delete the Chrome or Google folder in your user folder before reinstalling:

Hello I thought my issue was resolved when my thread closed here; http://forums.techguy.org/virus-oth...-computer-invaded-possibly-steal-banking.html

That start with

when I try to move or delete them some folders cant be entered (ownership issues?) or the file name is too long to move.
These are the files found so far

I know there is still an issue because my sound doesn't work I go to the sound device and disable>re-enable and it works for a minute then stops again. I have NO EXTERNAL SPEAKERS. This is a laptop.

Please let me know what I can do. Should I download a firewall?

My computer is not automatically assigning a drive letter (path) for a new external hard drive device. (Manhattan Quantum Bigfoot USB device) Hoping to manually assign a letter I try to go into the Disk Management folder and manually do it. However each time I attempt to open the folder it crashes (resets) my computer. If the device is NOT hooked into the USB port the folder will then open with no problem. It only crashes when the USB device is connected. FYI: the hardware device page indicates that the device is working properly. It just has not been assigned a drive letter or path.

My OS is Windows 2000 Pro.

Thank you for any suggestions you might have.

I guess this is where I should ask my question..I had to do a re-install of Windows 7 64 bit and it is working great now. But I discovered my Seagate external hard drive wasn't backing up so I re-formatted it, uninstalled the software, disconnected the unit and was going to re-install it. BUT I can not get rid of the My Replica icon in the My Computer/Other folder. I have contacted Seagate twice with no satisfaction. They told me to right click and delete it and reboot. Of course, I had tried that numerous times. You can't drag it to the recycle bin, I have checked and there is no Seagate/My Replica, etc. under Programs. The right click choices are Open/Open in New Window and Create Shortcut.

I am not going to re-connect the unit and install the software until the icon is gone. Does anyone have an answer to how I can get rid of this icon?

If I can't delete the icon the Seagate unit is going to be returned...unhappily.

A:Delete My Replica Icon from My Computer folder

Hi, try a rebuild of the Icon cache:-

Go to Start all programs accessories and right click on command prompt select ?run as administrator?

At the prompt type:- taskkill /im explorer.exe /f press enter
(Your desktop will go blank)

Now type each line and press enter after each line.
Note the spaces.

attrib -h IconCache.db

del IconCache.db

Shutdown /r

Hi all,

My girlfriend's recently over the last couple of days got a virus on her laptop, I'm writing this post from my uninfected laptop as i'm unable to from hers.

The laptop showed signs of problems 3 days ago with a popup message from a program called "Security Suite" (not antivirus that was installed) claiming there was a virus on the machine, and that to click here etc to solve the problem.

Virus protection on the laptop was Avast! Antivirus (free version) and Spybot Search & Destroy anti-malware. I ran both these programs, Spybot came up with some adaware bugs that were removed. Avast claimed to find a rootkit in the windows driver system folder. It claimed to need to run a boot scan to delete it, which i did - however the problem got worse.

I'm sorry for being so vague, the problem now is that every time we login to the computer - in normal mode we get the message:

Windows has encountered a critical problem and will restart automatically in one minute. Please save your work now.

I tried running in safe mode to run the programs you listed in your "first steps" post but after a minute of being logged in, the computer restarts.

Would it please be possible to get some preliminary advice on how to stop this new message so i can access the programs listed?

Many thanks to you all; and apologies for the vagueness and lack of detail.

First off, this is my first post on your forums. I'm fairly handy with a computer if I get detailed instructions. Not the type to dig into it without knowing what i'm doing haha. Anyways not to waste your time... this is the details of my problem(s).

PC info: Dell running XP home edition. About as much as I know about it.

So everything ran fine for the longest time, 2-3 years I think. Ran norton antivirus for 2 years, then went unprotected for a year or so. Got a little worried I might end up with a virus, so I purchased AVG antivirus. Installed it, and within a week I got hit with some virus, trying to remember the exact name... VirusGuard2008? I think that's right. It un-installed my AVG, and to this day prevents me from re-installing it.

So I dug around online looking for a way to get rid of it. Found a useful post with quite detailed instructions on removing the virus. Followed those instructions precisely. Virus is removed...... or is it? The symptoms of the virus were gone, but I still could not re-install AVG or any other virus software for that matter. So I had Malwarebytes anti-malware on my PC and that was it.

So my PC was gradually getting worse and worse. Redirection sites, freezes, random programs getting ended, etc etc etc...
Then today, I boot up my PC and attempt to run malwarebytes and I get an error "Malwarebytes anti-malware has experienced a problem and needs to shut down" please send error report....

So, I thought o... Read more

When trying to delete a file or folder (by pressing the delete button on the keyboard or right-clicking then clicking delete), a box pops up saying that explorer windows has encountered an error and needs to close. When that happens , another box pops up saying the debugger has encountered an error and needs to close.

The result:my computer hangs and nothing happens,it stays stuck in the screen where it happened.Cant click anything nor move the cursor and I ended up pulling the power cord or pressing the reset button.

I think this started to happened when I used a third party software to delete files then windows explorer crashed and the problem started.

I have a lot of stuff installed on this, I need to get rid of some of it I think.
