Wifi don't like stone houses

Q: Wifi don't like stone houses

Hi there,
I've got a house with thick stone walls and am trying to get some connectivity in my basement. I've given up on wifi signal reaching down there, so I bought a homeplug ethernet kit to get a connection from my wireless router which is upstairs to my desktop PC in the basement.

I just bought a nas which I'd like to connect in the basement though...

What's the best way to connect more than one ethernet device to the single ethernet output of the homeplug kit? I have a spare wireless access point running ddwrt but I'm worried about ip address clashes/issues with the main router. Should I just buy a switch instead?

would love any advice

thanks indeed

I recommend downloading and running Outlook PST Repair. It's a PST repair tool that I've used it in the past to recover emails, contacts, tasks and notes from corrupt Outlook files that are damaged or inaccessible. Supports Outlook 2000, 2002, 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2013.

You can download it direct from this link http://goo.gl/1bjhSi. (This link will automatically start a download of Outlook PST Repair that you can save to your computer.)

Finally broadband is out in the boonies but to the question. My neighbor and I want to know if there is a way that we can network our houses together so we can share the conection. Umm if it matters our houses are about 100ft apart, and we are both running windows xp pro.

A:Networking two houses

100ft apart? The Cat5 wire that you will run can be no longer than 100m which means from the hub/router if it is in your house can be no further than 100 m from his computer and vice versa. Keep in mind that there will be a cable running from ur house to his and i'm not sure how well a cat5 cable would run in the rain...

Network : 2 houses
1 Normally functioning router connected to modem in house 1
1 router w/ DCHP disabled in house 2
1 line of sight transmitter that bridges from one house to another, think of it like a switch

Network works great, able to access a shared network drive painlessly from all computers.

Able to directly access the web based UI of printer located at house 2 from any computer on the network.

However, unable to add printer located in house 2 from computers in house 1, either by network location, or by shared printer via USB
you CAN see the printers when you go to network "Add printers" but everything always crashes on final add part of printer installation.

Any Ideas?

So, these are both network printers with IP addresses? Some printers will not work across a network, if they're older units.

I'm making a sale to a family friend with a new HP 610 notebook with windows 7
so they have there current setup of 3 xp machines and one running windows vista home premium.

Am i on the right track adding the wirless booster/access point to the house and is there anything else i need to take into consideration

distance between where i will place the point/booster and the router is 20 metres
all 3 xp machines have wireless G capability
the router is a netgear with wireless N
the laptop has wireless N
the vista machine is already on the network wirelessy

Ok so I moved into a house beside my parents'. The network I set up at my dad's is a Linksys Wireless Router and the pcs are connected via other linksys wireless usb adapters.

In my house I am able to grab onto his wireless signal with just a usb adapter plugged into my pc. And my question is Should I just buy usb adapters for my pcs or is there a way to use another router over here to manage my connections (so i can hard wire this computer room for free instead of buying multiple usb adapters.)

I searched and read that routers can be connected in series by linking them together but can they be ran in series by just using their wireless signal and keep the IP addresses different? And set the main router up for DHCP and turn my routers DHCP off?
EDIT: Or can I hardwire my 2nd pc to the one connected to the internet and set it up for windows internet sharing? (Does windows even have internet connection share anymore?)

A:2 Houses/2 Routers? What are my options?

yea, i'm having the same dilemma, im trying to get wireless on my laptop and share it to a router through my laptop's lan port, and then connect 2 360's to that router. You definitely need to enable internet connection sharing on the main comp that u wanna share the connection. I'm just not sure how to assign the ip's of the router and 360's.

My ex husband lives about 60 feet from his parents home. They have a modem and router. I know the router is Netgear. Not sure about modem. They use Windows 7 on a tower with a router for the printer I guess. When I visited my ex, I brought my windows 7 Toshiba laptop and it worked perfectly in the 2nd house after his father gave me the SSID code. It worked in the rooms in the other house closer to the parents house. So my ex asked me buy him a computer like mine. I got a Toshiba satellite (new model, non touch screen) but it has windows 8. He tried to give it to his dad for fathers day. The man is over 75 and doesn't believe a laptop is a computer, wanted no part of it. But my ex does want it. If his dad will turn on the router like he did for me, a Netgear, will the new Win 8 Toshiba even be compatible.

Ex is 57 and living in their 2nd house due to the economy and he doesn't want to press his dad to even keep the router on. His dad believes that the router has to be unplugged everytime there is a storm since he has had one computer fried by lightning( which I believe could have been avoided by disconnecting his computer not the modem and/or router}.

He is even afraid to approach Dad to test the new Win 8 computer, but he will since I told him he cannot put a 2nd modem in the 2nd house on the same phone line. Any advice would be wonderful. They live in rural Nevada. There are no computer stores to go to within 100 miles, and I don't want to buy him a router ... Read more

A:2 houses one phone line DSL windows 8

Not sure what all you are asking, so may not be giving complete answers.

A modem would work for your ex if and only if he subscribes to an ISP for internet access.

Windows 8 in general will be compatible with the router, but no guarantees. Windows 8 seems to struggle with WEP encryption even more than Vista and Windows 7 so that could be an issue. And some wireless adapters and some routers still struggle to communicate when WPA2 encryption is used. So, the Windows 8 PC should communicate with the router just as well as your laptop does, but no guarantees can be given.

If there is a problem with lightning, as there often is in rural areas, I advise unplugging the modem, router and computers (or have them on a good surge protector) and disconnect the modem from the phone line or cable service when lightning threatens.

Hey all -- I'll try to be concise.

In the House, there is Spectrum internet which should be about 200 Mbps wired. There is a router and an access point. In the house there are several devices, both wired and wireless. Both types of connection approach 200 Mbps (for wireless, this is assuming you are within a reasonable radius of the AP). So far, so good.

But -- I live in the Apartment about 80-100 ft away, up a bit in elevation as well as on the second floor. There is something like a 10ft differential between our flat and the room in the House.

To get internet in our Apartment, I have an EnGenius ENH202 (which advertises speeds up to 300 Mbps) configured as an AP w/static IP blasting towards our window from the House. It is behind a window, so the signal must pass through two windows currently.

Internet access via EnGenius is both unstable and slow. I understand speeds will fall off, but I cannot get above 20 Mbps on any device and usually range from 7-13. As to stability, the internet drops out often, EnGenius disappears from list of WiFi network access points, etc. Interestingly, sometimes we can connect to the Spectrum 2G network more easily and reliably than EnGenius, though not always and not for long. EDIT: For example, the speed test just had EnGenius at 16 Mbps and Spectrum 2G at 33 (sudden, new high). I could handle the lower-than-advertised speeds (probably user error, I know), but the instability is killer.

We have a ranch in the rurals. There are 2 houses situated within a few hundred yards of each other and another one up on a hill a little distance. That one is probably on it's own, but I was hoping there might be a reasonable possiblity of a network between the two houses that are close together.

I'm not sure we qualify for dsl - here you have to be within 3 miles of their equipment. That leaves us with a direcway satellite system probably.

Suggestions for setting up some kind of network to share the satellite internet between at least the two houses? One guy was suggesting we dig a trench and lay pipe between all three buildings and run network cables for a wired system. Is that feasible? Yes, we have our own tractor and trenching equipment. What kind of pipe would shield and protect such a cable?

Thanks for any suggestions.

A:Suggestions for Networking Nearby Houses?

If there is no obstructions between the two houses (trees, hills, etc.) then wireless would be the way to go. Just set up two directional antennas and point them at each other.

My system is Windows XP. I have both the Seasons and Open for Business expansion packs and a lot of extra downloaded material for my Sims 2 game. Recently, I have not been able to get into the houses or community lots in my game. I will click on a house or lot and it just keeps loading without ever taking me into the lot/house- 20 minutes later and I have still not been loaded into the lot or house. I think maybe the problem could be some of the custom content that I have downloaded, as 3 of them show up with an ! mark next to them (like the icon I have for this message) when I click on "enable custom content", but I don't know for sure if this is the problem. Could it be anything else? How do I delete only those three custom content additions?

I live in a little gated mews of six houses in London. Fortunately, my neighbours are all awesome and we get on really well.

Currently, we all have separate broadband, phone and TV packages arranged with various ISPs, but I think this is inefficient. My challenge is to find out if it would be possible for the six households to behave like a business and get a single shared broadband line that we could all connect to wirelessly. This should allow us to get a much higher bandwidth for a lower price. I am not worried about phone line or TV at this stage, as we can't really share them.

All six houses are in an L shape around a courtyard. The greatest distance between houses is about 20 metres.

If we were to collectively get something like Virgin Media's 100mb Fibre Broadband, (http://store.virginmedia.com/broadband/compare-broadband/100mb.html) would it be possible to set up a powerful wifi router in one of the houses, or outside in a dedicated shelter, that all houses would be able to connect to without suffering range or signal strength problems?

If so, what router would you use? Would you set up wireless bridges in every house? And how would it be best secured?

Any other tips much appreciated!

A:Challenge: Set up shared wireless broadband for 6 houses

Contact one or more ISPs and see if they offer a service (probably business class) for that type of setup. If they offer that service they probably also have support for getting started.

If you do get a service like that and need more help from us please include a link to the ISP's terms of service.

Okay, here is the problem or situation. I have 13 buildings I need to get wireless access for, they are guest houses for people on holiday (vacation). They are all close by to each other, some joined on, they are 2 floors each. I don't know the mass area of the place, but imagine 13 small houses close by to each other in a sort of rectangle. Maybe 300 metres from office to furthest away building. Pure guess. The reception is where the main wireless BT Business Hub/router is. Sadly this isn't in the middle, and is one of the corners. Meaning access is cutting off those over the far end, especially those with only G rated equipment. Even N range only gets 1 bar on the opposite side of the same end, and I doubt there is any hope for the buildings at the other end of the rectangle.

So what is best to do to get total reception coverage ? I have tried 85mbps homeplugs, and they work up to a point, but cut off half way round. Making me think either the other half is on a separate power supply or too far away. I have thought about installing a wireless homeplug in every building, but that would cost close to £1000 for N rated wireless homeplugs. Also this doesn't help those on a different power supply. I just have to think of a way to wireless the whole place for G rated laptops (as most people still only have G rated modems in their laptops).

What should I do ? Any ideas ? I could dig a trench and put cables down underground, but then each house would need to be w... Read more

As the title states, I am want to set up a single ADSL connection, using 1 router across 6 apartments. The apartments are 2 floors and from the top they look like this

The Router is on Apartment 1.

Between apartment 1 and 2, 3 and 4, and 5 and 6 is a normal cement wall.

Between 3 and 4 is Cement and stone, so are the outside walls of each house.

I was thinking of doing it simple and using 3-4 range extenders such as the Linksys RE1000. From what i searched on the internet, and what the documentation states, the signal will get bottle-necked for the last house due to the RE1000 giving half of the bandwidth.

Quote from Linksys FAQ:
7. Can I add more than one RE1000 to my existing wireless network?

Yes. But since the RE1000 only gets half of the wireless signal from your main router or access point, adding multiple range extenders can provide you with even lower signal, thus, giving lesser bandwidth to your wireless computers or devices that you are going to connect to these additional extenders.Click to expand...

So, what would be an optimal solution to this? Should I go ahead and install the RE1000's? Is there something better that i can do?

Contacted RS and they said the headphones they sent me were defective, so they sent new ones three times. Problem still exists. Then they said my computer was not adequate. My computer met the requirements they asked for (Windows XP, 600MB hard drive space, 16 bit sound card, 800x600 display res.) My comp. is a Compac Presario SRT950NX with AMD 64 processor, 986 MHz, and 960 mb ram. Anybody out there got a solution? Yeh, I know I need a new comp., but cannot afford one now.

Have you tried to uninstall RS, totally.  And reinstall without the updates.  Run it for a while.  Also, it might be the update for the sound is running something your sound card or drivers cant handle, and wont do until you update the drivers/ software for the sound card.

I own Rosetta Stone version 2 software and still have the original disks (2 disks, one to install, one to run). When I first bought it years ago I was able to install and run it just fine on XP and later, Vista.
Now I'm trying to use it on Windows 7 Home Premium SP1. I installed it successfully (from what I can tell) from the application disk, but the software does not run. When I open up the installed desktop shortcut (as administrator), or go into the run disk and open the .exe (as administrator), I get no reaction. It opens up 3 processes in task manager, but they last only about 2 seconds and no application is opened. This repeats exactly the same every time I try to run the .exe. If I DON'T run as admin, I instead get an autorun launcher that tells me I need to run with elevated permissions when I click its run button.
Here's what I've tried:
1. Ran as administrator. Only change was the autorun launcher didn't open.
2. I ran in all of the available compatibility modes for legacy OS's. I got the same results as described above for each one.

That's all so far...any ideas?

I've had both joys and frustrations using Windows 8. Many things feel like a throwback to ages gone by.

Microsoft boasts that Windows 8 has faster boot times. But this isn't the case if you use a multiple boot OS. Instead of the quick prompt style boot menu, you are presented with a graphical interface which takes considerable time to load, then you have to wait for the OS you choose to boot. The simple prompt may have been ugly old and DOS like but it was lighting fast compared to the new boot menu screen. Now you have to mouse over to the choice and choose the OS you want.

The new Metro start screen reminds me a lot of the days before Windows where we used a program called QEMM. For those who don't know, QEMM was a DOS based memory manager that allowed you to run multiple DOS applications on the same system. Once you loaded your DOS apps, you could tab between them but never see both at the same time. Much like Metro does now though much more limited.

Windows 8 is more square than a teenage Bill Gates. Yes this is faster but it feels like I am back to running the old Windows NT 4.0 interface. The rounded edges and 3D effects have been stripped from the OS giving Windows 8 a very 2 dimensional feel. Many of the fancy designs introduced in Vista have been tossed in the trash. Even tabs are so razor sharp you could shave with them. Perhaps this is an attempt to move away from the Candy Apple coated computing that the Macintosh systems introduced but ... Read more

Spring greetings all!

So here is my situation, I want to use the Rosetta Stone language learning software soon, but my old desktop mic died on me. I could replace it, but, I'm planning on buying a Bluetooth headset to pair up with my Nokia Lumia 900 running Windows Phone 7 when it comes out April 8th.

My question is, could I use the Bluetooth headset for Rosetta Stone? I'm not sure if it would be ideal or not because I don't know about the voice quality. I don't want to sit there like a derp repeating the same word over and over in Rosetta Stone because the headset isn't vocally great.

But I don't really want to buy a new desktop mic because for one, they're weird. And secondly, I'd rather use that money to invest in a Bluetooth headset.

is that enough specs to meet the requirements of the X1950? will I need more ram? I'm pretty sure from my research that my Pentium with maybe 20% oc giving me 3.00ghz+ would support it no problem. ya?

The headset works with Rosetta Stone on other computers. It also works with other speech recognition programs on the original computer. I have reconfigured the speech recoginition settings in the control panel several times.

Solutions we have tried:
Renaming the device in the Control Panel
Plugging it into other jacks (front and rear panels)

Works with other programs
New headset/microphone
Adjusting volume/mute
Adjusting firewalls to allow Rosetta Stone to access internet
Calling Rosetta Stone tech support (they cannot help us unless we purchase USB headsets)
Reconfiguring the speech recognition set up in Control Panel
Troubleshooting in the Rosetta Stone program
It's frustrating because we have 19 computers with the exact same program, headset and OS working perfectly. Any help would be much appreciated!

Are you running Vista x64 or x86? If x64 - try this -
If Vista x64, use IE7 x86 not IE7 x64 - Adobe Flash Player does not work under IE7 x64.
START | type internet - you should see IE7 and IE7 (64-bit)

Choose the former.

Happy Holidays!

I have a suite with 30 Stone desktops (System-211) they use an Intel board with onboard graphics, since i arrived at my present base there have been little niggles with these machines anyway in that if the monitor isn't switched on first the machine wont always output to the monitor (regardless what driver is used, or monitor or order of primary devide in the BIOS).

Recently i upgraded from XP which apart from the above worked fine (please note i have been advised by stone these machines are Windows 7 capable and they have a Vista sticker on the front).
Since this time they often BSOD, taking record this is often when IE is being used e.g. Mathletics and more recently when an installed programs is used called 2Simple 2Create a superstory the only thing i think that they both have in common is they use Shockwave player.

I've attached the most recent BSOD Dump file if anyone can help me to get to the bottom of this, i'd rather not have to replace all these machines.

Just for reference warranty has expired on the machines.

I've attached the .ZIP that the SF Diagnositc tool made, cant seem to attach the full one but i'll keep a copy just encase.

Ok I have this Compaq Presario R3425US laptop, it is running Windows XP w/ SP2. The machine already had Rosetta Stone (Spanish) V.3 personal edition installed on it.

When it was brought to me the RosettaStone install was no longer working with an invalid path error, so i erased everything that had anything to do with this install (or i think i did) thinking it would be easy to start from scrach.

Now i have put the 1st installation disk into the machine and let it auto run and start the installation. It doesn't get very far before the windows installer appears with an error message "Setup was unable to find the msi package or patch 'C:\Documents and Settings\Fry's Electronics\Local Settings\Temp\RosettaStoneLtd_Temp_installer\Rosetta Stone V3.msi"

Thank you in advance

My old computer recently crashed. It was 32 bit and the OS was Windows XP. Back when the Windows XP computer worked I bought and installed Rosetta Stone (Version 3). I am trying to install Rosetta Stone on my new computer but am having the following issue.

When I insert the installation CD, the auto-play starts and I have two options:
1) Run setup.msi or
2) Open folder to view files.
When I click option 1, a window pops up that says the following:
G:\ is not a valid Win32 application

A:Can't install Rosetta Stone Version 3 in Window 7

Hi Sagevahi, welcome to sevenforums. Two questions....1) Is your installation drive "G:\" and 2) Is there an installation configuration file on the disc..maybe called setup.ini? If so, see if you can edit that to suit your environment.

Odd. There was no time for there to be heat in the case or the CPU. To quote Mr. McAllister: Anybody? Anybody?

A:Stone cold computer starts with CPU fan racing

A lot of Dell's do that until Windows loads or is loaded.

I would suspect the BIOS is set for fan full speed. If your BIOS has fan speed options that could be one issue.

Hello everyone,

Being a total GUI orientated child Gates and Jobs, I have hit a brick wall!

I need to flash some roms on a graphics card and a disk controller card, but both require the use of a 'boot floppy' (i'm adding that in quotes as this is totally alien to me!

I suppose this means some sort of ancient dos thing!

I've really tried against all odds to eliminate floppy and serial / PS2 devices from my life, and now I've achieved this, and my loft is far too dusty to be crawling around in trying to find such things again!

So, please could someone help me on this. Could I create this dinosaur relic on a USB stick, and if so, how does one go about it?

I tried making my usb stick bootable as I did in the wonderful thread on this forum to install RC1 and it worked a dream, but i'm guessing this isn't the same thing is it

Oh well... that's what comes from living in Steve Jobs land till a couple of years ago

Many thanks in advance from this utter boot disk virgin.

A:Back to the stone age... making a boot disk!

have you ditched your optical drives yet?

if not, you can download images for bootdisks here.

aha - there are also instructions for usb drives too!

happy booting!

Sony Vaio running Windows XP (downgraded from Vista). Bought a Plantronics headset/mic for son's online Rosetta Stone lessons. When we get to the stage where we "sound check", the program does not recognize the microphone at all. It has a dual plug, which is plugged into the front panel of the laptop.
So far I have tried various driver downloads (which only tell me that my Realtek driver is working just fine), tried to reinstall drivers off of my recovery dvd (which doesn't seem to be working, but that may be a whole separate issue I have to deal with in another forum), and fiddled with my control panel following many troubleshooting instructions, all to no avail.
I know the heaset/mic is good, because it worked beautifully on my husband's laptop until it died last week.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated....he's getting behind on assignments!!

I am trying to install rossetta stone software and keep getting an invalid directory error #267.And the I get the message cannot access %PUBLIC%\Desktop\ can anyone help with this I am a tech novice but I can follow direction

A:Rosetta Stone Install Error on Windows 7

In order to determine if it's a version compatibility issue (which is a frequent issue with (older) applications and Windows 7), you need to post what version of Rosetta Stone you are trying to install.

Microsoft maintains it's own database of software compatible with Windows 7 here if you want to check for yourself:

Type the product title and version into the search bar, then click "Search".
A quick glance on that website seems to indicate that you need version 3 or higher to install it/run it on Windows 7.

Does anyone have experience with this title?

I just purchased it for my son, and cannot get it to start. I'm running XP home. After the splash screen, the screen just goes to black and the game will not start.

At one point, when running the 3D diagnostics, it says that all the functions may not work because it has detected that I'm using an NT based system. But I'm on XP home, and the game is approved for XP.

I'm stumped.

Thanks in advance,
Dr. Michael

Hi, Today I tried installing Rosetta Stone on my laptop but I kept getting the same error message;

Error reading from file
_TEMP_installer\RosettaStoneVersion3.msi. Verify that
the file exists and that you can access it.

I did everything it said to do; I went to the location I tried opening it it just went to the setup and gave me the same error.
I have full permision to the file too. Does anyone know what the problem is? Im running Windows 7 64 bit Ultimate.
I tried installing it on one of my home premium computers and it had the same error but when I did it the next day it worked fine.
So I'd really appreciate it if someone replied to this post because I want to use it on my laptop so I'll have it on-the-go.

This computer belongs to a friend of my sister-in-law and is probably the most infected computer I have ever come across. In view of the seriousness of the infections - included 2 ZeroAccess rootkits - I have come to the conclusion that the only safe solution is a complete re-install.
The computer has a recovery partition and I think I have downloaded the relevant manual, but it is silent on the subject of how you initiate a recovery. Anybody got any ideas ?
It also set a personal record for temporary files - 100K + !
Chris Cosgrove

A:Clevo Stone Model W76TH - Recovery ?

Hi Chris, you may be able to access the recovery partition by pressing F8 on startup, and then repair your computer.
Occasionally manufacturers do not have a particular key press.  Either that, or you would either have to contact the manufacturer for a set of recovery media (at a cost), or contact genner sales. www.gennersales.co.uk.  I have used them a few times in the past.  ‎They have a very wide range of recovery media.  Cost is approx £25.00
Hope this helps
be safe
