T480s docking station issue with connected external screen - it goes black

Q: T480s docking station issue with connected external screen - it goes black

Hello, So - the problem appears when you are trying to use external screen which one is connected to the docking station (there is only two DisPlay ports and no others dedicated to monitors). When you connect it first time - it's ok. But when you trying to un-dock and dock again - external screen says "no input" and goes down. In other words - external screen is not working. The same issue is described over there:https://support.lenovo.com/lt/en/solutions/ht081248 Mine docking station type is 40AH, but anyway, I tried to run ThinkPad Ultra Dock 135W firmware update - but update says "the firmware you are trying to install is older than the version already installed. My Docking Station: Power adapter is 135W. All drivers are up to date. Btw - I have many of those docking stations with machines. For some of them everything is fine. But seems the problem is with docking station. I have two docking stations on my desk right now. And my computer on one is working fine, but with other on - not. So, it's clear that the problem is with the docking station.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Having an issue with all Dell 7510's and associated docks we've deployed to new users at my employer. The external keyboard won't work at the Bitlocker prompt. These PC's are imaged for Win10.
I've sifted through the BIOS settings and have had no luck getting it to work. One thread I found said to make sure the Post Behavior -> Fast Boot setting is set to Thorough. Verified that is the case.
Note: if I undock and dock the PC the external keyboard will work that 1st time at the bitlocker prompt, but at next reboot it doesn't work.

Dear all I have bought a HP Zbook 15 laptop and installed Ubuntu 12.04. It does not show anything on the external monitor when I mount the laptop on the docking station.  After installing the Ubuntu 12.04 and putting it on the docking station for the first time, I got this problem:"If an ACPI driver is available for this device, you should use it instead of the native driver". I have attached the whole log file. Then, I installed the latest Nvidia driver, and restarted the machine. This time, I do not see that error message; however, I cannot see anything on my external monitor which is connected to the docking station. I have a T440s presently with a T480s due for delivery this week - It seems that the docking platform for the T440s won't work with the T480s - correct?  I have looked for a similar dock for the T480S without success (though this doesn't always mean something isn't available, just impossible to find on the Lenovo website...)  Can anyone pont me to an Ultr Dock for the T480s - and/or confirm that the one for the T440s won't work?  Is the Thunderbolt 3 dock the closest I can get to the same functionality (without the usefulness of an actual docking base) for the T480?  Thanks for any assistance in advance.

And i used to activate it with fn+f7, when it's needed to show anything, when its necessary.... I have updated the windows lately, but after it the settings gone insane, and when i connect the laptop to the 4336 it sends the screen to the external, and need to change it back to laptop lcd by pressing the mentioned keys before. It is pretty frustrating, and i don't find the setting, which i was able to find before the update. It did the same way after the previoius update too.can somebody please help?I'm soo dissapointed in the new windows stuff by now. I used win 7 x64 for a looooong time, but.... the system came with win8 so its free os for me, and deceided to use it instead of 7. It was a mistake i know... When I start my laptop or login to my laptop in docking station, the laptop screen often remains black. Appearantly it is sending the screen signal to the tv only. The tv is connected with an active 4k display port to hdmi adapter to the docking station. Windows key + p does not help. When taking the laptop out of the docking station, or, when disconnecting the display port plug from the docking station, there is no issue. Is there a way to set this up ensuring that the laptop always shows at least its own screen? I use the tv connection less often. I prefer not to have to plug in the display port for use. many thanks for your help!

I have a T480s with a docking station, and everything works fine on a normal monitor. However, it does not detect the Apple iSight monitor at all through the docking station. The iSight has two plugs:  Thunderbolt 2 for display and USB-A for audio. I am using a USB-C (M) to Mini DisplayPort (F) adapter for the display since the T480s does not have a Thunderbolt 2 port. The audio was successfully connected, but the display is not detected at all. When I plug it into the laptop directly, everything works fine,  but it is an issue because the dock blocks the ports. Could it be that the adapter needs to be USB-C to Thunderbolt 2? But why would it work directly on the laptop? Problem with the dock port? Any solutions?

Hi!
I have a Latitude E7740 that runs Ubuntu Xenial (16.04). I dock it to a "Dell EURO2 Advanced E-port II" docking station.
If I boot it in the docking station, everything works fine, and I find all my two DVI-connected monitors.
However, if I undock, then put it into the dock again while running, it fails to enable the screens. I'm using a script called autorandr for switching between display modes - it uses xrandr. It tries to run:
xrandr --output DP1-1 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200 --panning 0x0 --pos 0x0 --rate 59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal --output DP1-2 --gamma 1.0:1.0:1.0 --mode 1920x1200 --panning 0x0 --pos 1920x0 --rate 59.95 --reflect normal --rotate normal
But the X server responds with:
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)  Major opcode of failed request: 140 (RANDR)  Minor opcode of failed request: 21 (RRSetCrtcConfig)  Serial number of failed request: 48  Current serial number in output stream: 48
Running this exact command after booting in the dock is doing the right thing, but after undocking then docking, it doesn't work.
Any ideas here? I have updated to the latest BIOS version.
Problem also reported in launchpad with lot's of debug info, here:
bugs.launchpad.net/.../1585884
Autorandr script is here: github.com/.../

I have a 17" Widescreen Sony VAIO laptop w/docking station (VGN-A190; Intel Pentium M 1.70 GHz; 1GB RAM; ATI RADEON 9700 64MB). Its a great computer which I've had for about 3 years. Still runs great! But unfortunately my laptop screen is beginning to die. It will only stay on for a few minutes before the back light turns off and you can't see anything. So instead of buying a new screen ($500), i went and bought an LG Flatron to hook up to my docking station using a DVI-D connection. Sort of a makeshift desktop set-up. I got it all hooked up and boom, got a nice clear picture. Except its got a 1in black border that runs equally around the picture. I tried playing with the resolution but the max i can go to is 1280 x 768. Is the connection from my laptop to the LCD monitor keeping my new monitor from capturing all the resolutions that the Laptop normally has by itself? How can i get the picture on my LCD to fill the screen? When i hook the monitor up to the docking station i only get three resolution choices: 800 x 600, 1024 x 768, and 1280 x 768. Appreciate any help!

A long time ago a question similar to mine was asked at https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-T61-and-prior-T-series/Trackpoint-disabled-when-docked-PS-2-mo... to which there was no reply. My Lenovo T61 running under Win7/32 was recently connected to a KVM so that it can be used in two locations. Operation is seamless for the KV of KVM: - Both keyboards work - FnF7 lets me have both displays at onceMouse is another matter entirely. When the KVM connector is plugged into the docking station, the mouse pad dies. Unplug, and the mouse pad is restored. The BIOS settings are the same choices for both touchpoint and touchpad, Disabled and Automatic:    "Built-in [device] is operational.    If PS/2 mouse is attached built-in pointing devices are disabled."     Since both 'mouse' capabilites can be operational at the same time there are presumably two sets of circuitry, or a way for one set to be shared. I would have thought the following choices were feasible, but only a) was implemented     a) Trackpoint/Touchpad     b) Disabled/Touchpad/PS2     c) Trackpoint/Disabled/PS2I had hoped the Middleton BIOS might have b) and c) but no mention of it. The Thinkpad wiki at http://www.ibmfiles.com/ibmfiles/t61/ThinkPad%20T61%20Wiki.htm says "The touchpads on most models of the ThinkPad T61 are capable of multi-touch features, including two-finger scrolling, with the pro... I work from home and all the equipment I have was provided by my company.  I have an HP ultra slim docking station which my HP laptop is connected to.  Also connected to the docking station is a mouse, keyboard, and two HP EliteDisplay E190i monitors.  Since hooking everything, I keep losing my screen.  What I mean by that is they keep going black and when they come back on, the screen distored and there is an error message at the bottom of the screen.  I can't recall the exact message because it disappears pretty quickly but it basically says that the graphics was lost.  I assume this has something to do with running three screens on the docking station (the laptop, and two monitors).  Is this right?  If so, how do I fix it?  I lose time everytime it happens becuase I usually have to reboot the system to get rid of the distortion.  Please note:  I have called my IT and they aren't too much help.

Almost a week ago I received my new P51 loaded with all available components, as did my last Lenovo W530. The P51 appears to be a great machine. My current problem is that I cannot display 4 screens (notebook plus 3 external displays). Since I have used my W530 with 4 displays for over two years I fully expected to achieve the same with an even more powerful Notebook. The new P51 has two 512 GB SSD drives, the Intel Xeon E3-1505M v6 vPro MB CPU, a NVIDIA Quadro M2200M 4GB graphics card, 32GB(16+16) DDR4 2400 SoDIMM, a notebook display of P51 FHD NT 2D MC CS WLWW and the latest Windows 10, 64 bit operating system. Since I received the P51 and its docking station (P/N: 40A50230US) I have connected the three external monitors to the docking station via a HDMI port, a DVI converter to HDMI and a Display Adapter converter to HDMI. The BIOS was updated to the latest and the 256 Mb default memory for the displays was increased to the 512 MG setting. I have also moved the displays and cables around to confirm that cables are fine and only two external displays will be seen at any time. In speaking with Lenovo hardware support, one individual said I needed to subscribe to software support to get the BIOS changed. Later, a second person said that I needed to play around with the BIOS settings and it should work. I have also rebooted the system a few times. Unfortunately I still cannot view 4 displays.  As an IT, Telecom and Cybersecurity SME... Read more

The external monitor works fine with or without the laptop closed, but the external will not run video streams or saved video files. Video will only run on the laptop screen. Is there any way to fix the settings so that this does not have to be done each time I'm docked? Thanks for any assistance or ideas you might have.

I am running the latest BIOS and latest Intel graphics driver from the dell support page (both about a week old). (By the way, the BIOS update messes up the OS installation - buyer beware.)
I've tried many other combinations to trouble-shoot the issue:
1. Different laptops (E64xx), same E-port, same monitor -> works fine
2. Same E7470, different E-port (old USB 2.0), same monitor -> monitor blinks
3. Same E7470, same E-port, different brand 4k monitor, different DP cable -> monitor blinks
4. Same E7470, same E-port, monitor switched to DP 1.1 -> monitor stays black
5. Direct connection between the E7470 and the monitor via HDMI -> works (but only at 30 Hz due to HDMI limitation)
So the conclusion is that the combination of E7470 + E-port + 4k monitor doesn't work, regardless of the exact monitor or exact E-port. That leaves the E7470 as the only logical culprit.
Is this problem a design limitation of the E7470, a known driver issue or a faulty notebook?
Thanks in advance!

I am also having a similar problem with my 7470. Newest bios and drivers are installed. Happens on both the laptop's screen and using an external monitor through a docking station.
Seems to start after the monitor has been turned off due to PC activity. Can fix it with a restart OR by changing the resolution and changing it back. Both highly annoying options. Switching from external to laptop screen does not fix it, it will continue.
my external screen is using a DVI connection from the dock to the monitor which is also DVI so I am not using some kind of adapter. Removing the connection from my KVM does not resolve the issue either.

Do you know which version of the HP Ultraslim Docking station  you have?    There were some specific changes in regards to the 2013 generation of the dock where the docking station has 2 x DisplayPorts instead of earlier versions that only had one DisplayPort and one VGA. If you have the later 2013 Generation docking station and have 2 x DisplayPorts,   those monitors should be fine.  And you'd of course need the two displayport cables to use with the monitors (monitors might come with them, but make very sure they do). The 2013 Model looks like this (2 Display ports to the right of the Network jack):http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/61ZSGNoW0sL._SL1500_.jpg Whereas the older model looks like this (single DisplayPort, next to the Network jack):http://content.hwigroup.net/images/products_xl/172474/hp-ultraslim-docking-station.jpg If the monitors do not come with cables,  I highly recommend Monoprice.com as your source for those or ANY cabling.   The link below is for 3 foot long cables, but depending on the layout of his desk, you might want 6-10 foot cables.  Below link is an example:http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=13359   Brian

Hi there, I am using a Thinkpad T460s in a docking station and I have one external monitor attached with HDMI, the other one with VGA. They have run on 1920x1080 for two years now and all of a sudden one of the monitors cannot do more than 1280x1024 any more. Both monitors are exactly the same brand and type and the configuration has worked for quite a while. When I want to configure the lower resolutions monitor in Windows 10 or in the Intel console, the maximum resolution I get is 1280x1024 at 60p and the other monitor still runs on 1920x1080 at 60p what am I missing? Thank you!Michael

Hi all, I have a Thermaltake external eSATA docking Station that had no issues in Windows 7. Now with Windows 8.1, each time I power it on it will not be automatically recognized (not showing in "This PC"), I have to go to Device Manager and right click "Storage Controllers" and click "Scan for Hardware Changes". After doing this Windows 8.1 will pick it up and the external drive will show in "This PC". How can I fix this? Any ideas? Thanks
UPDATE: Installed ASmedia 106 drivers and now issue fixed.

I have 3 Dell P2210 monitors hooked up to a DK1633 doscking staion. 2 hooked up using DisplayPort connections and 1 using a VGA connection. The VGA is 1024 X 768. Can I get it to 1680 X 1050 like the other 2? I think I can since when I first hooked it up the VGA monitor was displaying 1680 X 1050 and one of the other monitors with the DisplayPort connection was at 1024 X 768. Do I need ot use the HDMI connection on the laptop it's self?

Hi,

Just replaced my OS (Win 8.1) Drive, and was planning on using the old drive as a back up.

This new (and old) drive have just the OS, all my programs and media etc are on other drives.

Can I put my old OS drive, with Windows 8.1 still installed, into a USB Docking Station, and use it as a back up boot drive. In other words will this drive boot from the Docking Station if I keep it up to date (Copy Disk regularly) in case of internal hard drive failure?

Thanks in advance?

A:Windows 8.1 - Wil EXternal Drive in Docking Station boot?

A regular poster on another forum does what you are suggesting. Except he takes it a step further. Since he builds his own, the system internal drive is in a quick release setup. If the drive has a problem he pulls it out and slides in the backup. He uses Macrium Reflect to image to the backup using a docking station.

But I've also heard from others that a drive in an enclosure will boot via USB. Some techs use that to boot into a fully working Windows system so they have all the tools needed to fix the customer system during a house call.

Don't ask me about licensing issues since I'm not an attorney. But the poster who does the haedware backup drive I would think is only using Windows on the one drive that is installed in the machine etc..

When I connect only one monitor through the HDMI port on the port replicator, it works fine. When I then add the 2nd monitor to the DVI port on the port replicator, the DVI connected monitor displays, the HDMI connected monitor shuts off - and...I can no longer even see the HDMI connected monitor in the display settings options. How do I make the HDMI & DVI connected monitors to work at the same time? Thx, Jim
