I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Can you insert a USB device without Windows crashing? Or is it durring boot/restart? I was getting a BSOD on bootup from a flash drive. I was able to insert the drive once Windows was up and running, then in device manager I expanded 'Portable Devices' and disabled the flash drive there.

This didnt disable the storage but the portable drivers Windows loads because it thinks my flash drive is a poratable/music device type.

Depending on your storage devices you may need a driver update. I was also getting errors (not crashes) and had to update the Intel Storage Manager. Some info on your system might help us to better determine the problem and solution.

Ok. Now i'm already on 32-bit version of Windows 7 and so far happy with that. The only hurting loss is RAM, but all other things seem to be perfect.

But still, i remember (just a couple of weeks ago!) myself having pain with my external HDDs, portable player and other devices. So here i am, posting TEMPORARY fix for this.

From an elevated command prompt (right click on the command prompt shortcut, run as administrator):
1) Type "bcdedit /set truncatememory 0x80000000" (no quotes)
2) Reboot
3) Go to control panel -> System and Security -> view amount of RAM and processor speed.
- It should report 4GB (2GB available)

To undo this, open an elevated command prompt again:
1) Type "bcdedit /deletevalue truncatememory" (no quotes)
2) Reboot

Hi Guys, i have a quick question regarding USB storage devices.
i'm running Windows XP Sp2

when i plug in my flash drive, iPod or card reader (with a sony memory stick in it) to my usb ports , Windows detects them and the "safely remove hardware" icon shows up in the bottom right toolbar. however, i cant access my USB devices from My Computer, the drives don't show up.

i read on some other post that you have to manually go into Control Panel->Administriative Tools ->Computer Management, to assign a specific drive to the device. However, after i tried that, the devices still dont show up in My Computer.

I'm not sure how to fix this, any help is welcome!
all my other USB devices (such as my keyboard and mouse and printer) work fine

A:Windows not recognizing my USB Storage devices

This may seem obvious and i don't mean to be patronizing but have you tried a different USB port? I have never heard of this problem. Also when you plug in your Ipod does it appear on iTunes? Also does it not prompt you when you plug in your devices open, run, view pictures etc.? Have you disabled that, if so enable it.

Hello, I have a problem with Windows 7 Build 7100. I am running a Fujitsu Amilo Li 1818 laptop. The installation went fine, I had to download a driver for the WLAN card, but everything else works perfectly. However, when I connect a USB thumb drive, or an external USB HD, I can't access it. Windows 7 recognises the device, installs a driver, and the device is visible in Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Devices and Printers. It doesn't show up in Computer > Devices with Removable Storage. In Device Manager, the USB HD shows up under Disk drives and it says "The device is working properly" and the driver is up to date. However, when the USB HD is connected, it also creates an "Unknown device" entry under other devices in the Device Manager. This part says "The drivers for this device are not installed (Code 28), and clicking on Update Driver doesn't work ("Windows was unable to install your Unknown Device"). I have installed the Vista chipset drivers from the Fujitsu website. Any ideas how I can fix this? Why does Device Manager recognise the USB HD but also create an "Unknown Device" entry?

A:Windows 7 won't recognize USB mass-storage devices

I've got it fixed now, after reading this: http://forum.freecompromo.com/viewtopic.php?t=181 The solution: step 1! Go into C:\ and create a folder called usbdriver step 2! Go into C:\WINDOWS\INF and copy the whole contents step 3! COPY ALL THAT INTO C:\usbdriver step 4! THEN when your asked to look for the driver! and vista cannot find it POINT IT TO THAT FOLDER C:\USBDRIVER and click ok. Looks like it was a bug from Vista. Thanks Nano Warp and NooNoo for your suggestions

I have a Dell XPS 8000 with a 4 in 1 card reader. I also have a DVD and a Blu Ray drive installed in the computer.

But in the descriptions in Computer, I get this:

BD-RE Drive (G SD/mini-MMS/RS
DVD RW Drive (H CF/MD

I have even moved the two drives off of the SATA ports built into the motherboard to a Startech SATA III PCI card, but this behavior continues. I have even deleted the 4 drives in device manager and had windows reinstall them. I have also unassigned and reassigned drive letters to the card readers. Nothing I have done fixes the situation completely.

The only progress I have made is that after moving the drives to the PCI card ports, I can put a disc into either drive and it will read it, and the description will change and drop the card reader description. But the other drive will keep the wrong drive description.

What can I do to fix this?

hey guys, im new here (signed up solely to ask this question cuz it looks like a pretty cool site) and i need some advice

so i built my own computer out of purchased parts about a year ago but its been having freezing problems until a few months ago (bad hard drive lol!). i havent noticed this problem til recently (due to the constant efforts to diagnose the freezing/crashing) but my computer seems to eject any usb mass storage device when i try to say.... copy files into or out of whatever drive is connected, whether its a flash drive or my phone's sd card (which is connected via usb).

For example: this happened today - i tried to drag an .avi file out of a SanDisk cruzer and the windows dialog box pops up to tell me that it has begun copying. after 5 minutes, it is still 'Calculating...' the ETA and i notice that the explorer window that displays the content of the drive has been turned into that washed-out, unresponsive state. Running Windows 7, if i try to close the window, i get the choice to either close the program, wait for it to respond, or some other thing.

this happens if i plug any usb drive into any usb port (front or back) on my computer. Wow that was a lot to write. well if anyone has come across this sort of problem before or can help point me in the right direction,

PLEASE REPLY

AMD AM2 6000+

This board has the AMD crossfire chipset. If I hook up any USB storage device Windows Vista Ultimate x64 instantly hard locks. I then have to power off the PSU and wait 60 seconds before I can turn the computer back on. The power switch will be completely unresponsive until I do this.

If I have the USB storage device on and then boot up it will hard lock before I can reach the login screen. I can repeat this behavior.

I can also cause 5 to 10 minute delays during the Vista install by having a USB storage device attached. The slow downs occur during the initial menus.

Has anyone else seen this problem? This behavior does not occur under Windows XP. It has to be a problem between Vista and something on this motherboard. I also noticed AMD/ATI has never bothered to update the chipset drivers. I find it very hard to believe they are perfect and don't need any fixes.

I am already using the latest BIOS. Actually the problem occurs with 1.3, 1.4, 1.5, 1.6 and 1.7.

If I do a fresh install of Vista with a USB storage device attached everything seems fine at first. Then after a few reboots the hard lock shows up. I did extensive testing here. I logged the order in which things were installed/applied. Drivers, patches, etc. I removed all but the necessary component of one video card. Hello,
We currently got some problems with our Windows 7 clients. Every notebook we install requires exactly 5 minutes to recognize some USB 2.0 storage devices. Every USB 3.0 storage device works perfectly and is immediately detected. I've tried many different
USB 2.0 devices with the result that some are working and some need exactly 5 minutes until the device gets recognized. For example the Corsair Flash Voyager is slow and the San Disk Cruzer Blade is fast.

If such a corrupt USB device is plugged in while starting the system, Windows stops booting after the "Starting Windows" dialog. Only when I unplug this device Windows continue with booting.
I know there is something wrong with our Windows Setup, so I use a new one for the following notebooks. But we've already installed some notebooks with that Setup and need to fix them now. Installing the system with the new Setup fixes the problem.
I've already tried to upgrade the BIOS, remove drivers from the Device Manager, install the latest driver and perform an system-upgrade but nothing fixed the problem.

Can you help me to solve this problem?

Thank you for your help & Best regards
Kai

Hi I Just made a new computer and every thing is working great. Jut one thing that is a little Irritating. When I click on my computer and you see Devices with Removable Storage. I see 31/2 floppy (A), DVD- Ram Drive (D), Removable Disk (F), Removable Disk (G), Removable Disk (H), Removable Disk (I), Removable Disk (J). My old computer would show just the floppy and the DVD but the rest would not show until you put in the USB stick or the SD card in then it would show up.

This way it is easier to identify witch one you have put in. Other wise It it is looking like this Removable Disk (M) then if your not looking good you will have to click on all of them.

Is there a way to do this?

i clicked yes one time but it said windows couldnt complete the format for some reason.

anyone know whats going on?

Try one of the non-working usb sticks in another computer to confirm it works fine first. Make sure that other computer you'll try it to has an up-to-date antivirus, in case this could be malware related.

Go in the device manager : start => run => devmgmt.msc. Any warning message there about your usb devices ? Unplug all the usb devices you could have attached (use a ps/2 keyboard and mouse), right-click => uninstall all the usb controllers in the device manager. Restart windows and they'll get redetected.

Hi there, apologies if this has been covered in past. I currently have four 3.5inch drives and a 2.5inch drive totalling 8TB all in perfect working order. I find it difficult to remember where certain things are across all of the devices so I'm interested in learning how to combine these drives into "a cloud" of sorts. I have looked into the world of NAS however it would seem I need NAS-grade hard drives to put into it and this would deem my current drives useless, something I'm trying to avoid (aside from the hefty price). I think the Local Disk Q is from my USB which I disconnected when I powered off the system. Now whenever I click it, I get this

Anyone know how/if I can fix this?

A:2 Extra Storage Devices?

I believe the E and Q drives are part of your main drive. Partitions of the physical drive the C drive is on.
The H drive is a USB stick.

Not sure why the Q drive is not accessible other then it is a small partition and it is not formatted. But then it shouldn't show up.
The E drive is a normal system partition but it is usually at the front of the drive and normally does not have a drive letter assigned to it. Win 7 creates this area to store the BOOT loader files and some other system files.

Open Disk Management and post a screen shot of that.

Alright, so here's my problem:
My Dell Inspiron E1505 laptop hasn't had any problems in the past as far as USB storage is concerned. But recently it's developed problems being able to read these devices. It's only storage devices like flash drives and my external HD - my mp3 player and my cell phone can still hook up to it without problems. Also, new "Local Disks" are showing up.. There's my original "C:" HD, my backup "D:" HD that came with the laptop, and now there's also a "F:" and "G:" that show up- I looked on PC Inspector to see what they were and it appeared they are Dell setup partitions called "DellUtility" and "DellRestore".

Anyways, when I plug in a USB storage device, it doesn't bring up the "what do you want me to do with this thing?" autoplay that XP normally does when you put something into it. When I go to My Computer and click on the removable drives ( usually H: or I: ), it says "The disk in drive _ is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?" and I have tried formatting it since I don't have any valuable information on my flash drive but it still doesn't fix the problem.

I've tried looking up myself how to fix this problem but I'm only finding bits and pieces of information on similar problems but nothing has helped. I'm hoping someone here has an idea of what I might do because now I can't use... Read more

I'm having issues with my computer recognizing any sort of mass storage device. Most of the time when a problem comes up I have no problem figuring it out unless it's a laptop hardware issue - that's a nightmare.

Anyway I've tried to plug in a USB Jump Drive (128 MB) and an External USB Hard Drive (80 GB) and both devices are recognized but Win XP Pro can't find drivers for them and they should already have drivers in Windows according to the manufacturer. Heck I use the jump drive at work on a number of different systems and it works just fine. I suspect maybe a bios setting is off or perhaps another USB device is causing interference for mass storage devices. I had one case where I tried to play a game and my keyboard was causing it to crash.

Hi, I recently bought a fairly high spec refurbished computer from a school clearance sale and I am now wanting to use it to be the basis of a simple media center. The problem I am facing Is that it wont recognize my mass storage devices (memory sticks and an external HD) through the USB ports. It Knows they are there because it will show me the names but it wont install them automatically and brings up the 'Install New Hardware Wizard' I've tried using this but it will reach the end of the installation and then say Invalid data. I have checked with the drivers on my laptop and there are the same ones on the new PC.
I am aware that some schools deliberately block USB storage devices for a variety of reasons so I googled my problem. It came back telling me that to disable/Enable USB ms devices there is a simple registry tweak, to change the DWord "start" value to 4-disable or 3-enable which is located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\USBSTOR,
However, when I checked in RegEdit there was no USBSTOR directory at all. I have many questions,
Does this directory exist as a default or is it something that is added for this tweak?
Is there another way of disabling the USB for hardware other than mouse and keyboard? If so how can it be reversed?
Thankyou

So I have this weird problem with my PC where any sort of removable storage or music device I connect to my PC through any USB port, shows up saying that it needs to be reformatted and then if I try to reformat it it says that it cant do it.

I have tried this with 2 flash drives that work on other computers and an Ipod that is perfectly fine. It says that the Ipod is corrupt or something and wont work on Windows.

Obviously there is something wrong with my PC, but I'm not sure where the problem is coming from. I already have a USB mouse and a USB cord for my keyboard that I leave plugged in permanently and they dont seem to be effected. It seems like anything that is showing up on my PC as a storage device or drive, automatically needs to be reformatted but I cant actually do it.

This is a real problem, I need to be able to move files on a flash drive for school and its currently not possible. thank you in advance for any advice.

Hi,

When I try to access any removable storage device (DVD, pendrive, memory stick using a flash card reader) on my Windows Vista Business, I always get a "access is denied" message. And now all the removable devices listed on Windows have a red "not allowed" symbol (as you can see here: http://img477.imageshack.us/img477/8504/problemadc4.jpg )

I believe the problem started when Windows froze while the computer was reading a memory stick, so I had to reboot it using directly the power button. Before that, everything was working fine (and they're still working under Linux).

I have already tried to reinstall both the flash card reader and the dvd drive, and it didn't help. I did a chkdsk too. My guess is that it has something to do with the removable storage manager or something like that.

Any help would be appreciated.

A:Problem with removable storage devices

On the keyboard, press the windows key + r, in the run box, type gpedit.msc, click ok, expand Administrative Templates, System, Removable Storage Access. Check if any policies are configured. Under CD and DVD: Deny Read Access, and : Deny Write Access, try disabling them. Reboot any see if access is allowed now to the DVD drive.

How to Avoid Problems with USB Storage Devices
Updated May 2, 2010If you're having USB drive problems, also see: Troubleshooting Guide Windows Won't Recognize Your USB Hard Drive

Do's and dont's to avoid problems with USB Storage Devices

Don't: ?Surprise? Windows by unexpectedly removing your USB storage device
=> USB storage devices are "hot pluggable". This means you can plug them in any time but does not mean you can simply unplug and/or power them off anytime!
=> !!Never, ever!! unplug a USB storage device before first either stopping the device using Safely Remove Hardware icon or shutting down Windows
=> Unplugging unexpectedly may corrupt your storage device and result in partial or total data loss!!
The Safely Remove Hardware icon
You'll find it among the notification area icons along the bottom right of your Windows Desktop

=> Notification Area icons appear on the right side of the Windows Task Bar
=> The Task Bar normally appears along the very bottom of your screen

The Safely Remove Hardware application informs Windows you intend to remove a device. This gives Windows an opportunity to prepare for the removal by taking steps such as halting data transfers to the device and unloading device drivers. Removing hardware from a running system without using the Safely Remove Hardware application, is referred to as ?surprise removal?

Hello all

Well this is a strange one.

Anytime I try to plug in a "new" (e.g. never plugged in to this computer before) USB Mass Storage device, device installation fails. When I click on the balloon that says device installation failed, it says "No driver found". If I manually choose a location to search drivers and choose \Windows\System32\Drivers, Device Manager chooses "USB Mass Storage Device" but says "could not install because there was an error". (Gee, thanks, so helpful )

I am getting this error with an old iPod Nano (1st gen!) but it will also happen with USB Memory Keys etc.

Any ideas?

Hi

Could anyone please tell me why when i use my USB memory stick it seems to take an absolute age to copy.It seems to spend ages calculating time needed then is so slow.

Never was like this XP, seemed so fast.

Anyone any ideas
thanks

A:removable storage devices and vista

If you are using a new VISTA machine it should work as fast as your XP machine. If you 'upgraded' to VISTA then possibly you have a Driver issue, i.e. your computer no longer knows it's using USB 2.0 and thinks it can only go USB 1.0 speeds. If that is the case you might be seeing a message saying "USB 2.0 device on USB 1.0 port".

Yeah, sorry about the title, I tried to make it as informative as possible.

I'm asking for help. I've searched around the net for ages to try to find answers to this issue, but I can't find anything that matches my problem exactly.

My computer has issues with usb storage drivers I think. All usb stick thingys don't work. And they do work on every other computer I've tested them on... which is probably around six or so. Whenever I plug them in, it comes up with that very unhelpful message that says that "USB not recognised", and when I check the device manager, it comes up with Unknown Device.

Also, when I plug in an MP3 player, they are only read half of the time. The other half, they do the same rubbish that occurrs with my USB things...

My printer and keyboard both work fine, so I know it isn't a problem with my hardware. Well, maybe it could be a problem with my PSU, but it is a 550W, and I'm sure that my components aren't draining that much power.

Finally, my 7-in-1 card reader isn't recognised by vista most of the time. When it is finally recognised and the drives show up in My Computer, but when I put an SD card in or something, nothing happens.

I'm running Windows Vista Ultimate, which was upgraded from a buggy version of Home Basic Lite edition. And, if I can't get this fixed, I'll format my computer, but I don't really want to resort to that.

If you need anymore informati... Read more

Usb port of my laptop (compaq presario V3000 series) was working properly. But suddenly i noticed that my laptop hangs when it is connected with any storage device (pen drive or camera ). It seems that USB port is probably working well bcoz it does not create any problem when a printer or mouse is connected. CD drive is working fine.

I have uninstalled some newly installed programme or resored the system in earlier point. Please help me

A:Storage devices hangs my laptop

The USB ports on the computer support USB 1.0, USB 1.1, and USB 2.0 devices.
So that's good!

Does this happen on all USB ports?

Iíve been banging my head against the wall due to a kindle touch/windows 7 issue.
Last week I had my computer re-imaged and now when I plug in the kindle via usb it doesnít show up under removable storage devices.
It does make the noise that you hear when plugging in a usb device, and I can see it under device manager, but not disk management.
Iíve tried to uninstall then reinstall kindle software, but when itís reinstalling it crashes by computer every time. I get the BSOD.
Iíve tried all of the simple troubleshooting I could think of. I thought giving it a file path under disk management might work but it isnít there. Iíve tried reinstalling usb drivers, using a different cable, resetting the kindle.
Oddly enough, my roommate has the exact same computer as me and we both got our computers reimaged at the same time and his kindle has the same problem.
I found a post from a user with a very similar problem:

http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...en-error/e886ffab-6275-4f78-b891-c764a86ba974

She even has the same computer as I do. But hers was resolved by updating an unrelated driver (acronis) and Iíve searched my computer and donít see anything like that.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

My last Thinkpad W500 had an option in the BIOS for the Hard Drive password.  I see no option in the P70 UEFI Firmware.  Does the Supervisor password automatically  send a password to the storage devices?  If so, does it work through the Intel RST RAID1 as well? I'm running four storage devices in my P70.  Two Samsung 850 EVO M.2 using the Intel RST RAID1 for UEFI, Windows, and /boot for Linux, and two 960GB SanDisk SSD's for my Linux rpool ZFS mirror. It would just be nice to know for certain that the passwords are enabled on the drives now as well.

A:P70 Supervisor Password For Storage Devices

Supervisor password is not related to HDD password.

From my quick check here, as long as "RAID Mode Option" is set as "Enabled" and "M.2 SSD" (regardless of whether drives are configured in an array or not), the HDD password option goes away.

I need to ask a BIOS guy about this.

Hi Guys,

I've tried every available answer I could find on the internet but to no avail.

So, I have a WIN XP SP3 computer, that detects all USB devices, but only in BIOS. When I get to Windows, the devices can not be found anywhere. It's been working fine, but I don't know, when it stopped working (it's my server, and I do backups through USB external disk), since I haven't used it for external disks for more than a year. All other devices (mouses, keyboards, card readers) work fine. External disks and USB sticks work fine in all other computers (+ as said, they're all detected in BIOS).

What I tried and figured out so far is:

- USBSTOR.sys can't be started, I get an "Error 1058: The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it."
- Changed USBSTOR.sys with new file
- Deleted upper and lower filters in registry
- Reset the registry values in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Usb (it's 3,hexadecimal)
- Run a virus and malware scan
- Updated Windows (been up to date)
- Run the dll Suite
- Run a program, that cleans all letters assigned to external devices (and as it showed up all local as well, had to remap and reshare my RAID)

I'm loosing my mind slowly...

A:My computer won't read storage USB devices

Try going into the device manager and uninstalling all the USB devices and rebooting (make sure you have the drivers in case it needs to be installed again)
