Thinkpad X280 LED slowly flashing - will not start

Q: Thinkpad X280 LED slowly flashing - will not start

Hi everyone, I was setting up my brandnew X280 and after installing Windows 10 Pro I downloaded Lenovo System Update tool. It proposed a number of updates including a BIOS update and I let it do its job.Last I recall was the window about BIOS update where I hit enter (or ok).The noteboks was sitting in a docking station, battery fully charged. Next time I checked the progress the screen is black and the white power LED is slowly flashing (like being in standby). However I can't wake it up. It will just keep flashing. As I can't take out the battery on a X280 what can I do? Pressing the power button for an extended period of time didn't do anything. Is there a hidden key stroke combination or do I have to wait a couple of days (weeks) until the battery has run out? I'm afraid the BIOS update failed and the system is bricked, even though I followed the instructions by the letter. Any suggestions are more than welcome! Thanks. Q.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I am not sure if I'm posting this question in the right section. After signing up, I found it very difficult to work out where to post! Anyway, I am thinking of buying either an Ideapad 720s (13", core i7 8th Gen, 8GB Ram, 256 GB SSD) or a Thinkpad x280 (12", core i7 8th Gen, 8GB Ram, 512 GB SSD), and I believe they both have Thunderbolt 3. So I was wondering if there are significant differences between them. Where I am, the Ideapad is around the $1,000 mark, while the Thinkpad is about $400 more expensive. Is the Thinkpad really that much better, and if so, how? Thank you.

tl;dr Is the Thinkpad x280 flawless for Ubuntu 18.04? Hello. I recently acquired myself a X1 Yoga 3rd gen with the hopes that I would have a nice experience running Ubuntu. Unfortunately, from day one I encountered issues with it: X1 Carbon Gen 6 cannot enter deep sleep (S3 state aka Suspend-to-RAM) on Linuxhttps://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/X1-Carbon-Gen-6-cannot-enter-deep-sleep-S3-state-aka-S... Touchpad and trackpad work erratically after I close and open the laptop's lid (suspending and resuming). I need to reboot everytime.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/Thinkpad-X1-Carbon-Yoga-3rd-eratic-Mouse-and-Keyboard-... Others that I found about online after acquiring the machine:FYI - Linux May Not Support Thunderbolt Native Mode (seems to be solved)https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/FYI-Linux-May-Not-Support-Thunderbolt-Native-Mode/m-p/... Linux throttling bug (T480s)https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/870u0a/t480s_linux_throttling_bug/ And from Linux's side, poor consideration for touchscreens. Sadly, I have no choice but to return this machine next week. I feel these are nice machines in theory, and I would be willing to give them one more try. I was considering the Thinkpad x280 and I want to run Ubuntu 18.04 again. I would like to ask if any of these issues persist, or any other issues I'm not aware of show up when running Ubuntu, or any other Linux distro.

I have the new ThinkPad x280. I need to be able to connect using a SIM card. My model is 20KF 001LV.  I am trying to figure out if my laptop model supports the SIM option, if it has a nano-SIM card slot or not. There is no indication or way to see in the settings.

A:Thinkpad X280 - nano-SIM card

X280 have a dual nanoSIM and microSD card tray located at the back of the case (check HMM on page 82 for more information). In order to use WWAN Internet connection, you also need a proper WWAN modem installed on the motherboard. Check if Fibocom L830-EB or Fibocom L850-GL is listed in Device Manager.

A:ThinkPad X280: i5-8250U + 16Gb?

The X280 has RAM soldered to the main board so it can't be expanded or swapped out. If you need 16GB, buy the one with 16GB RAM.

I would like to connect two 24in monitors to extend the display across the two screens.  The user manual states that if you connect a monitor to both the HDMI and USBC then USBC will have priority.  I could not find any explanation as to how two monitors can be connected to enable extended display.   I assume one option is to purchase a docking station but I am hoping there is a less expensive option. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello all, Long time thinkpad user from the W700 time haha. Just wanted to drop a line after recently getting a thinkpad x270 instead of the x280. I got a little worried with the design philosophy of the thinkpad x270 --> x280 lineage.  I got the x270 because of the bigger removable battery capacity along with the ethernet port among other ports.  I welcome the usb-c port in the x270 and glad to see more of that in the x280. But the fact that the x280 does not have an ethernet port along with a non-removable battery with the option to add the huge super cylindrical battery was a deal breaker for me and I see that the x280 was a step backwards in terms of a design / functionality standpoint from the x270. I am just getting a little bit worried about the design team and their vision for what the x2## series have in the future. The x280 seems to be just a cheaper version of the x1 carbon.  I have the x1 carbon btw lol. Got a few thinkpads... and I like the design for the x1 carbon and i think that to remain as it is...for the thinkpad x1 carbon. I dont want that spilling over into the x2## series. That is supposed to be a pure work horse mobile productivity device.  Anyway what do you guys all think about the direction which the x280 is taking from the x270 which I thought (referencing to the x270) was a pure great work horse laptop with an AMAZING battery life which is absolutely CRITICAL to the x200 line of thinkpa... A:ThinkPad X280 - Smartcard reader part nr.

See HMM(hardware maintenance manual) Page 58 and 81.  That should help you.

As for part numbers try parts lookup.  In the left column Choose "Cards Misc Internal" for smart card reader.  Choose "Cables Internal" for the cable.

Hello,I bought new X280 which has proprietary connector called Ethernet Extension Adapter Gen 2. I bought it to leave other ports ready for other adapters, but I have found out, that there is another USB-C port very close next to this ethernet port and when I put ethernet adapter into laptop's proprietary port, there is no space to put second USB-C connector. My question is: If I cut the border of Ethernet Extension Adapter connector, will the USB-C work? Or is there any reason to not to do that? Many thanks.

Hi there, when I undock my X280 from the Ultra dock (notebook closed but running) and open the lid the device will not respond to keyboard or trackpoint input.I need to close the lid again which triggers entering 'energy saving' mode. Then opening the lid again will resume everything to normal. I can reproduce this every time on two identical Docks. Funny thing is, my wifes identical X280 does not show this behaviour but works fine. Any idea what I could try to solve this small (but a bit annoying issue)?Thanks.Q.

Hi. I got my custom order X280 In July with all features for office purposes and use it just 15 times since then. The battery was never drain in shutdown mode in the first days of use. I remember that after one week being off the battery had the same percentage of charge at restart in the first month of use. Since then whenever I start it I check in Vantage if there are updates and I made the necessary updates every time, Windows updates, System updates, Bios etc. By about two weeks I noticed the battery is discharging between 6 and 8 percent overnight which is quite frustrating and annoying for a three month product. Something happened which consume the power overnight when is turned off. If they are Lenovo employees on the forum please advise me what to do. I would like to know is there is a warranty defect, something that can be fixed by the following updates or something that I can personally change in order everything come back to normal. PS. I have the USB ON disabled from Vantage Thank you.

Hi,

I just bought the Thunderbolt 3 dock and remembered reading that you have to make some changes in BIOS for the usb hub to be detected in linux. So I entered BIOS and disabled thunderbolt security and enabled some other thunderbolt feature (the one below thunderbolt security, the tooltip tells you to enable this for linux support and older versions of windows 10).

After saving and rebooting all I see is a blank screen and the fans start going at full speed.

The computer does not boot into my OS and I am not able to enter BIOS again.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

Is there a way to factory reset the BIOS without entering it? Usual solution here is to remove the CMOS battery but I really don't want to open my brand new laptop unless I know my warranty is still valid.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:ThinkPad X280: After BIOS update, notebook won't boot anymore

It is not very difficult to remove the CMOS/Coin Cell battery on that system, just remove the main battery, and then loosen 3 screws to open the large bottom cover (see page 73 of the ThinkPad E560 and E565 Hardware Maintenance Manual for details on removing the cover)    Once the cover is open, unplug the CMOS/Coin Cell battery (you don't actually have to remove the battery), wait a few minutes and then plug it back in (see page 81 of the HMM for details). Doing so will not effect your warranty, but don't force anything and keep track of the screws.

Hi Everyone!

I just joined and hopefully I can be of some help for others, but for starters I need to ask for help for myself! Before posting this, I did a search of the forums here but did not find anything identical to my issue.

I have a 10-month old Acer 5100 notebook that will no longer start Windows Vista (Home Premium if that matters).

A few nights ago I noticed the machine was at the "Windows did not shut down properly" screen (black background/white text). Unfortunately I was not around the machine when it got into this mode. The screen showed a list of 5 or less choices - I think the default highlighted choice was to let Windows search the hard disk for errors. I chose this but it didn't seem to start after watching it for several minutes. So being the impatient sort, I rebooted the PC and the same black screen with choices displayed. This time I selected 'Start Windows Normally' but when the system came back up it ends at the same screen again. (I believe the "Windows did not shut down properly" screen I was seeing was not the normal one I've always seen, but a different one with less choices, if that makes sense)

So I said forget this, I have a backup. I tried restoring a backup of the hard drive I made with Acronis True Image (I booted off the True Image CD). I chose to only restore just the C: partition. Both times I tried, it gets to over 50% complete then there's a message about the image being corrupt.

So I shu... Read more

Dell E510 Intell Pentium D, 1g memory, WinXP

I have been having a problem starting my computer from the tower.Called Dell* the first time but it just happened to start up while I was talking to them. They said I probably pushed the button on a slant?
Well it has happened twice since. I shut down normally last night & this morning pushed the start button (made sure I wasn't "slanted") same thing . I get a flashing orange light and then a voice that says "Press repeat button to receive setup instructions".

Where is a repeat button? I have held the start button in for a minimum of 3 minutes but it won't shut off. Pulled power & let it sit for 15 min. & tried again..flashing orange. So I just let it continue flashing and this time it finally shut off. Went to start again..walla..it started! Now this is the third time and I am afraid the next time it won't start ever.
Someone out there able to help?

*Was surprised at Dell trying to sell me tech help in North America so I could get faster response time & a North American. This was before they would start to answer my question!

Do you have any background processes running that might be slowing the system down? You can experiment by going to Task Manager -> Processes, sorting by Memory usage, and killing processes one by one while checking the Start menu. Make sure to save your work in any open programs first!

Hello together,
I am new in this forum and I have a problem with my Satellite P85532V.
May be anybody can help
My Notebook works allways properly. After a changing the HDD to an SDD I get the following problem.
The first time i had a big delay from pushing the power button until the TOSHIBA screen (betwen 3 and 15 Min. ). Now Iam lucky if it starts.
I tried the the following steps
- remove all external Parts
- remove HDD/SDD
- remove Memory
- remove BIOS Accu for more than 5 minutes.
- remove ACCU and using the Power adapter
After I removed all the parts, the BIOS starts after a long time ( 15 Mn. ).
Setting the BIOS to default values. All OK, no errors.
Next steps
- assemble all parts again,
- start the notebook again
- same error,long delay or don't start
- If I came to the point with the TOSHIBA Screen, the noteboke works properly !
- if I check the system with the WIN 10 tools, no error found.

Thank you for your help.

Have a nice day.

Best regards

Team, I have a user who is experiencing a rather strange behavior on his latop.

He is a Winxp Sp2 32bits user.

He is connected to a docking station, he however has issues with start menu on bootup of the machine, only sometimes.

When you click on the start menu it closes super fast, almost as if the win key was depressed. He is experiencing the issue with both his detachable keyboard and also his laptop.

At this point I have rather no clue, have you guys ever seen such a behavior?

Thanks!

I am new here and having some problems regarding my start menu. I have XP SP2. The start menu and submenus will pop up on the screen at random and start flashing and lock my computer up. If I am on AOL, it kicks me off and closes AOL down completely. I have no control over the computer when this happens. The mouse just kind of goes everywhere around the screen and I can't control it.
I have ran AVG and Ad-Aware with no threats found, so I'm not sure if it's a virus or not? The only new thing I've noticed is that this started when I put an Ethernet adapter into my computer to allow me to use Vonage phone service.
Anyone know what could be causing this? It's getting to be pretty annoying since it happens about 10 times a day.

Thank you!

hello & welcome to TSF,

this sounds like it is related to (Vonage)

for the time being uninstall Vonage to see if the issue persist

if it does then do this

do you have a Windows Xp cd, not the restore cd's that come with some systems, the cd will have the Windows logo & 3D hollowgram/image on it

if you do not maybe you can barrow one from a friend/family member/co-worker as long as it is the same version that is on your system

if you have (Windows XP Home Ed. sp2 ) then the cd will have to be that / if you have a cd with (Windows XP Home Ed. )you will have to slipstream (SP2 ) onto a disk that you create

this also applies to (Windows XP Professsional )

http://www.helpwithwindows.com/Windo...p2-bootcd.html

now if you do have the Windows XP cd with sp2 please follow these steps

performing a (sfc) system file checker

It is a scan that checks the core files & dlls of the (os) operating system and replaces them if they are corrupt or missing with the correct original version

#1 then select (run) , then press enter
a window will open
#2 type in ( cmd ) then press enter
another window will open
#3 type in ( sfc )then press enter
another window will open
#4 type in (sfc /purgecache) then enter / your pc will work like crazy / this helps in rebuiding the cache file (notice the space between (sfc & /)

lenovo 8113-jcg
2GB RAM
160 HDD
Pentium D 925 (3.00ghz)

Flashing cursor appears on start up after Lenovo splash screen.
Problem has occured after serveral tests...

- Faulty ram was changed and tested on other machine. RAM 100% works.
- Possible faulty HDD. Replaced with brand new HDD.
- After Norton ghost. Tested image on other computer that are the same and they work. Tested other image build on this computer and still same result.
- Connected computer to network using motherboard port and PCI card and ghosted with both. Same problem occurs.
- Removed CMOS and reset. Re-ghost and still doesn't work.

HDD works in external case so this rules out HDD failure.

HDD works when using XP disk to install windows, however there are lots of driver problems and this method isn't practical. The ghost method needs to be used to get all the settings from the network so the computer can be ready to use quickly.

This is happening on two identical computers.

If anyone has any information that could help me with this problem it would be valued.

Thank you.

When I turn my computer on, the start button in the bottom left corner continues to flash and won't stop. It will bring the icons up on the page, but if I click on one, as soon as I start typing i.e. screen name, etc it freezes and starts blinking. I have been able to run c-cleaner, spybot, anti-virus software, etc- and cleaned everything out, but continue to have the problem. Any suggestions?

Hi, I run Windows XP with all MS updates, Norton Antivirus 2008 w/updates and DSL with a fire wall. Scanned for virus today and only found cookies.

My problem started several days ago after receiving a link for some potential family history information. If I'm using internet explorer it shuts down, the cursor disappeared, the start menu opens, opens the taskbar dialog box, dialog box for changing the desktop appearance.

This occurs frequently and I'm at the point that I'm not using the desktop instead I'm using my laptop instead (runs vista) and to date I'm not experiencing any problems here. It does not seen to be a virus as I'm not having a problem with the vista os.

Thank you for all help with this problem.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Seems that my computer has good days and bad. Somedays it is extremely slow while online (but laptop connected to same network is fast). I don't know if the updates from Windows has anything to do with it, but it seems that computer slows more and more everytime an update is installed. I'm not sure if this is what you need, but here is my HijackThis log:

it all went badly wrong and i tried to close it down. now when i start up my laptop i get a blue screen, the grey bar at the bottom with the windows logo on fashes, and the wheel spins around. before this screen i was getting a flashing blue screen and it was not allowing me to do anything at all.

i tried a battery pull but that made no difference help

IF this is true exactly as you describe, then unfortunately you have been scammed into installing malware. That is impossible to do. You cannot "upgrade" from one architecture to another: i.e. 32 to 64 bit or vice-versa and any legitimate software would never suggest it.

Recommend using Killdisk on the hard drive then clean install Windows from the DVD or USB key.

First of all this occured when the electricity went off one day. I had my computer connected to a ups and a safety power hub but i didnt manage to shut it down before the battery of the ups went off so it forced closed on its own. After that the led of the power supply, not the one on the psu but the one which is located in the chassis in front where the hdd led is as well, started flashing and the computer wont start at all. I started turning off and on the power supply button on the psu and i could hear a noise not a loud one like the one you get with a ram or w/e problem but a silent "" vzzzz" thinky. After multiples swith off and on from the psu button the sound stoped and the pc started. However when i shut it down again the noise is there again and now i cant start it again. Now i want to buy a new psu in order to fix the issue but i am not 100% sure if it's the psu's failure. Any ideas if it's the psu or something else?

A:Flashing power supply LED and PC won't start

That sound like a problem with psu to be sure get yourself a psu tester you can get a good one for around a 10 on ebay also take a look at your mobo to see if there is damage there also check your ups and safety hub.

EDIT: I've put in a youtube link to show what my problem is but it's messing up the post even if I use plain text and uncheck all the options below the post.

The video above is not my computer, but it looks just like this.

Built the pc last year with all new parts, used vanilla 8.1 install.

The other day when I woke up Windows from sleep mode, the image was flickering the purple start menu color, causing the OS to be unusable. I thought this is a GPU issue because I disconnected monitors and connected to the mobo and the problem went away. Then switched back to GPU, and it stayed ok. Later on though the problem came back and switching to mobo did not help. I did full shut down and restart. Checked graphics drivers and they are up to date.

For what it's worth, I really only use this thing for Lightroom and Steam, I only have 3 common games installed. Firefox, VLC, and Ableton are also installed. All software is legit, paid-for installs. I also do not download any torrents on this PC. Running windows defender.

Task manager shows my CPU is running at 35-40% or higher non stop after reboot. Under processes tab, there's lots of things that all seems Windows related taking between 1 and 10% and a couple more (See pic below). "Service Host: Local Service" and "Service Host: Local System" for example. Around 70 processes, 800 threads, 300,000 handles.

I cannot get my computer to start up. It gets stuck at flashing underscore at top left corner. I searched for answers but I cannot access anything at all. Nothing but a flashing underscore at start up. I took the mobo battery out and reset. That did nothing. Please help me out. Thanks a lot everyone.

This morning I found the start menu closing and opening like a neon sign. I was able to run a scan and no problems there. Obviously tried rebooting but that didn't help either.

Any ideas?

A:Start Menu Constantly Flashing

Post the list of hardware. Is it a laptop or desktop. You ran scan how? does the keyboard work?

Sounds like a keyboard fault at first glance is it USB keyboard if so unplug it and see if the menu stops opening.
