Windows 7 won't install Photoshop 4

Q: Windows 7 won't install Photoshop 4

I am having a nightmare trying to install an old copy of Photoshop 4. This program used to work fine on XP but on anything higher its a lottery. I have tried it on two laptops with Vista, one it installed fine and worked seamlessly and the other I just get the exact same message I am getting when I try to install it on my laptop with Windows 7 home premium, namely:

The version of this file is not compatable with the version of windows you are running. Check your computers system info to see whether you need a 32 bit or 64 bit version.

I have tried to run it in compatability mode and also as administrator but just get the same message. Why have a compatability mode if even after you switch to it its still not compatable!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Windows 7 won't install Photoshop 4

Compatibility is an attempt by Microsoft to support old programs, this will not always succeed. It relies on the original program being written to conform to set standards, which is not always the case.

Your system specs do not give a lot of system details but ....
one of the major issues with running very old programs is the system architecture, the majority of modern systems are 64 Bit which can also run 32 bit through the use of special virtualization techniques. Unfortunately a 64 Bit system will not run an old 16 Bit program.

Although the actual Photoshop 4 program may be a 32 Bit, it may have some 16 Bit components which will not run if you are running a 64 bit system.

I love Adobe Photoshop 4.0 and do not want to upgrade nor learn a new version. I need a new computer but am hestiate in getting Windows 7 Home Version if I can't install Adobe Photoshop 4.0 (release date 96-98). Has anyone had a successful install of this program?

A:Can you install Photoshop 4.0 on Windows 7

Try this. Copy your PS folder from XP or(?) to your flash drive. Transfer that folder to your x86 folder in 7. Make a shortcut to your start menu. Try to start it. It will tell you such and such .dll file cannot be found. There will be five to seven missing .dll's. Just Google and download each dll and place them in the photoshop folder. This is how I got PS 5.0 to run in my 7 x64.. It works fine for me. If you try a direct install you are probably going to hit a wall?

My Photoshop 7 installed fine on a Windows 10 32bit computer that had been upgraded from Win7.
Setup.exe would not complete when trying to do the same thing on Windows 10 64Bit.
32bit installer was running in Task Manager but doing nothing.
Apparently it is possible to convert the machine between 64bit and 32bit but that would involve reloading everything (I thought).
Found the solution here by IdleMartin.
https://forums.adobe.com/thread/2018880
There was only one 64bit process holding up setup.exe and now my old photoshop program runs on Windows 10 machines running either 32bit or 64bit.

I just bought a Vista x64 PC with the free option to upgrad to Windows 7 at the end of October. I am planning to install Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2.5 on Vista and then upgrade to Win7, since all the programs and files should be intact.
Is there a good reason to wait with install of CS4 and Lightroom until the upgrade to Windows7?

Thanks

A:Photoshop CS4 install on Vista vs. Windows 7

I have read here and elsewhere that doing an inplace upgrade from Vista to Windows can take any where from several hours to an entire day, depending on the amount of programs you already have installed.. Having said that I would start to backup your data and do a clean install of W7, and reinstall your apps... that way you lessen the risk of bringing unwanted data blocks from Vista to W7..

I recently updated from Vista Home Premium SP2 to Windows 7 Home Premium. Now I need to re-install my Adobe Photoshop 6 to be able to upgrade to Photoshop 7. When I try to run the Adobe setup.exe as administrator, setup starts, the cpu load goes up but then the setup disappears without error message. I tried all the different compatibility modes (Win95, 98, 2000, xp, Vista) - no success. Can anybody help please? Helmut / Cologne, GermanyHelmut

A:Photoshop 6 & 7 does not install under Windows 7 Home Premium

Hi Hzimmer3, You have to wait for the information about the compatibility of the Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 and Adobe Photoshop Elements 7. You can upgrade to Adobe Photoshop 8 which is completely compatible with Windows 7. You can check the compatibility here. Check event viewer for the error message, for this click on start menu type Event Viewer and press Enter.
It would be better to check with Adobe for what operating systems that Photoshop Element 6 would be supported. However you can try installing Adobe Photoshop Element 6 in a fresh installed Windows 7.
I hope this helps.

Hi, I have a Lenovo W530 on which I reinstalled Windows 7 and lenovo softwares and drivers from scratch. Everything works well but for a very annoying detail: The ctrl+shift+s photoshop keyboard shortcut is not longer responding. It was working just before I did the re-install of Windows with the same photoshop installation package I have tried the following without success:- Installing Windows 10 and all the drivers/software and Photoshop (Decided I didn't like it as my PC was running 10 degrees celcius hotter)- re-installing the keyboard driver from the lenovo website on my fresh Windows 7 install- Switching fn/ctrl keys in the bios back and forth- Running Windows troubleshooter- There are no failing processes/services/exe in the reliability monitor nor in event viewer What works:- other keyboard shortcuts work well in photoshop- assigning another keyboard shortcut to save as in photoshop allows works Well it is minor, but bugging me!

A:Photoshop CS4, cannot install!

If you have purchased a cd with the software you should not need to click the setup exe, sounds like your running from files, which suggests pirated software. This maybe why it's not installing, perhaps corrupt.
Otherwise try to get the CS4 cleaner from Adobe site, it's free. This should be run then restart you PC. Extract your rar or zip file containing the files, is there a read me file? This might tel you to modify the HOST file to allow the install. Click the setup.exe should now work.

Hi , I've been trying to install Adobe Photoshop CS5 Extended on Windows 7 Ultimate x64. The problem is installation fails , because the installer does not have permissions to install files into the windows folder. It cannot install the Microsoft VC80_ATL and VC90_ATL . I've runned as Administrator , Tried to manually install the VC.msi installers , I've turned off AV,AS,Defender,Firewall and so on, I've tried installing through Command Prompt running as administrator and writing msiexec /a "file destination". Still no luck, Tried installing from desktop , tried safe mode , nothing works !! Installer log is long , so I'll say only that it gives Exit Code 6.I've been waiting a long time now, hoping adobe will release a fix, but theres none . Please Help .

I have Adobe CS3 Master Collection installed on my computer. I installed it to my second hard drive. My PSU was getting a little hot, so I decided to remove the second hard drive.

I still need Adobe CS3, so I put in my CS3 disk, and tried to install it. It said it could not install because Adobe CS3 was already installed.

So I tried to uninstall it. It said could not find files or something to remove.

So basically I cannot install, or uninstall Adobe CS3 to my computer. I lost my secondary hard drive, but I can probably find it if I have to.

Is there a way to uninstall Adobe CS3 w/o putting the hard drive back in.

Foolishly, I bought a copy of Adbe creative suit 3. I now believe it to have been some sort of trial copy as it stopped working after a month. It came up with a message saying you cannot use this programme at this time, please uninstall and re install. It proved impossible to re install and just kept coming up with installation error messages. I just put it down to experience (it was very cheap) and bought a brand new copy of photoshop elements 7. I know that there is nothing wrong with the disc as it loads perfectly on other computers. However, when I try to install it on my own computer it loads up ok seemingly to the very end, puts a shortcut icon on my desktop, then goes into rollback and promptly uninstalls itself. When it has finished uninstalling it comes up with the message that the installation was interupted. Any ideas?

'This opreation system is not supported by this installation. For Windows NT 4, you must have service pack 6a or greater to install'

Setup will now quit.

In my fvwm-xterm I see in the mean time

Although I tried setting my .wine/config "Windows" = "win98" to all applicable values (especialy win2k, winxp, ..) it still keeps complaining about this lack of service pack 6a.

Is it because it is a one-file intsaller, or should I install msi-installer first in wine?

Thx a bunc already!

"Filters" and "Plug-Ins" go in C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop CS2 (or whatever version of photoshop you have). Close photoshop then re-open, they shuold now be installed.

Also when you install Abobe Photoshop it will install in C:\Program Files (x86)\ unless you have Adobe CS4 which in this case might install in C:\Program Files\ but I can't say for sure as I'm using CS2 under Vista x64.

A:Manually Install Adobe Photoshop CS2

You can't install it manually. The program is just like that, and usually speaking, the people who write applicaions such as photoshop naturally assume that those people who would install the program would have the rights to install programs on that system.

You clearly don't have the right to pick and choose what to install on that system. You seem to be talking about a company machine, and so I would advise you don't even think about it. If the Sys Admin is any good, you WILL get caught, and in all probability, he's made it impossible anyway.

or does anyone know of any better solutions to this??
ur help is greatly appreciated

A:im not able to install photoshop CS3, cos IE wont closed.

This is probably a silly question, but have you tried restarting? My computer gives me the same problems with keeping the Internet Explorer process open even after I've closed it, and usually it does just fine after a quick reboot.

You could also try setting the priority of 'iexplore.exe' to 'low,' but I'm not sure if that will result in anything because your computer is asking you to close the process, not just ignore it for a while.

There could also potentially be another program that's hindering something in the machine, that seems completely unrelated (I've had that happen to me before). Have you installed any other programs recently before this problem?

Sorry I can't give you more help. Hopefully this problem works itself out.

I purchased a Yoga 900 - model 80UE I am unable to install my copy of PhotoShop 7. I was able to install it on a Sager Laptop that also had Windows 10 and an i7 processor. The Autorun opens, and gets past the user agreement, and on to the screen where I choose Installation  or Explore Disc. When I click on the button to install PhotoShop, or Adobe Reader, there is a momentary spinning wheel that vanishes and the CD player stops working. After some investigation I found multipe instances of Set Up in the Task Manager - one for each attempt to lauch the Setup. These are listed as Setup 32 bit. It also happens when I go into the disc and double click on the Setup inside the PhotoShop folder. I have rebooted, as well as shut down, etc. Nothing will get the installation to kick in. Again, I was able to install PS 7 from the same disc and same external disc drive on a Sager laptop with Windows 10 and an i7 processor. If anyone has suggestions that might help me get this program installed (Adobe no longer sells PhotoShop, it is a subscription service only and I cannot get a download version of PS7 which is maybe 10 years old.) I still have a few days where I can return this Lenovo and get something else, which I will certainly do if I cannot install this software. Good day and welcome to the community.Sorry you're having difficulty.
I confess no knowledge of using PS, so this is a wild guess, a really wild guess, but could it be hanging up on the 3200x1800 panel resolution? Like a hardware enumeration hang? Think it's worth it to drop the resolution setting to FHD and trying the install again?Corollary question: What's the native panel resolution of the other machine?

Edit to add: There is some interesting discussion here: https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1941912Things ranging from just letting the installer run for a couple hours, to copying the CD contents to the main drive and then running setup, to running the installer in safe-mode.Regards.

Hello, new here, 'm trying to install Photoshop CS4 extended version on my newly installed Windows 7 x64 OS, but the CD doesn't run, it just does nothing, the ODD does however play DVDs ??

Might this be because its a 64 bit OS ?

Previously had Vista installed on the laptop, and it doesn't state anywhere on the PS box whether its a x86 or x64 software version.

I think CS 4 was offered in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions.

It shouldn't matter, though. If you have the 64-bit version, it should install to the Program Files directory. The 32-bit version would install to Program Files (x86).

You have some other issue going on.

Do you know that your hardware meets the minimum requirements for CS 4?? I'm not sure if that would cause your problem.

Just bought a used Dell Optiplex Series GX260. New hard drive & fresh everything. Running XP Home - Service pack 2. --- Problem: While trying to install Adobe Photoshop 7.0 the installation wizard stalls at 99% while preparing to install. I stared at it for a long time hoping it would nudge on over to 100% but that didn't work. Rebooting didn't work. Any advice would be great.

Is the Photoshop cd an original? If so, you may need to find a replacement (Adobe may ship you one for a price)

hi
have a problem, i have been trying to install Photoshop 6.0 onto XP Home Edition, but it will not install. I got it to install on Vista without problems.
So....this is what i do:
#1 - insert photoshop CD

#2 - welcome screen - click next

#3 - menu screen - click install photoshop 6.0

that's it nothing happens from there on.

so i tried another method - explor the photoshop CD - go tot he photoshop 6.0 filder and click on the setup.exe file - nothing happens - when i go into the ctrl+alt+delete and processes tab the setup.exe shows up in there so i have no idea what is going on.
I had no problems installing Adobe Acrobat 6.0 Professional and Adobe PageMaker 7.0 on XP Home.
Any ideas????

it is a fresh install of XP (well factory restore).

A:Photoshop 6.0: Installs On Vista But Won't Install On Xp

My only thought is that something else needs to be installed or running before installing Photoshop. I have version 6 on my computer, OS Windows XP Home, and I remember there were several installation disks that had to be used in the proper order. Note that have the creative suite, but I didn't install it all. Depending on what component I want to install, I have to first insert the correct initial CD then go to the one with the part I want to install. It's been so long though, that I do not remember the order, and my disks are hiding right now.

It might be that you need to use the first disk you used when installing Adobe 6 Professional before you can install Photoshop.
